Obama Family at Picnic in Butte

Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha has a family picnic in Butte, Montana this afternoon. Before sitting down to eat hot dogs, Barack said...

What makes this country great is not the size of our military, not the size of the economy, not the big buildings we have. What makes this country great is its people.

Here is the video and some pictures from the event...

Happy Independence Day!

In celebration of America's Independence, Obama supporters have fanned out across the state of Ohio to register new voters, walk in parades, and reach out to folks in our communities.

Brittany and Caitlin, two students from the University of Cincinnati were excited about Barack and the movement for change. They knew they wanted to get involved. But they're shy, so canvassing and voter registration didn't feel like the perfect fit.

So after being recuited by Sarah, one of their local Obama organizers, they headed into their neighborhood field office to help out, and weren't sure what to expect. They spent a couple days on computers helping enter the results from canvassing that other volunteers had done, and then when they heard about the Declare Your Independence voter registration events happening this weekend, they knew just what they should to do.

As Sarah told us:

They're both design students. I told them that they were free to use our posterboard and markers to make signs that my team could carry in the Northside 4th of July parade. They told me that they would go home, brainstorm and return in a few days to make the signs.

I was blown away and so was everyone else in the office. The lesson learned here is that we can always find ways to include everyone. Brittany and Caitlin want to help and now... I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of them over the coming months.

FIND an Obama event near you, or SIGN UP to volunteer and find out how you can get involved.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Supporters in Fargo, North Dakota

Barack spent time in Fargo, North Dakota yesterday. Becky is on the ground in the (normally) reliably red state of North Dakota, as the campaign continues to put staff in all 50 states.

At the Veterans event, Becky was there to interview Obama supporters.

Mark, who lives in Devil's lake, 165 miles away, started his journey [Wednesday] night and arrived at the shuttle site at 7:30 [Thursday] morning, hoping to be first in line for this rare opportunity.

It's not very often people [politicians] come to North Dakota, so you've got to take advantage of that. It's so different seeing it live. On TV you can see the enthusiasm, but here you get to feel it.

Mark usually votes Independent, but, like so many other people, is hungry for change. When asked why he supports Senator Obama, Mark replied...

I hate to be redundant, but it's the change. We need change. McCain is more of the same.

Kevin, a member of the IAM union, was originally a Clinton supporter, but says he's now behind Obama 110%. His children are all enthusiastic supporters as well. Nine-year-old Hunter wrote a four page report on Barack for school.

Anne and Mary attended the event together. Although Mary originally was a Clinton fan, she expressed her full support and confidence in Senator Obama...

He's brilliant, he reminds me of JFK, his wife is wonderful, and he really cares. It's exciting that he's here in North Dakota, that says something right there.

Anne has always been an Obama supporter and says, “he knows the change we need and he'll do it”. She expressed her confidence in his promise and ability to get us out of Iraq, to change No Child Left Behind and to help to improve the Education system.

Here is the video from his speech...

Visit the North Dakota page to continue reading about the event yesterday.

Earlier today, Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha attended an Independence Day Parade in Butte, Montana.
The buzz from local blogs: "A level of seriousness"

Hey folks, we're introducing a new series here on the blog. The Buzz will feature content from local blogs around the country. Are you covering the campaign on your blog? Share your URL with us in the comment section, and we'll check out your corner of the blogosphere!

Flackattack at Tondee's Tavern in Georgia offers a glimpse of voter registration in Forsyth County:

Tonight, in the reddest county in Georgia, an Obama fellow showed up with at least 6 other volunteers to work the Cumming Fairgrounds before the fireworks show. They were all young, good looking, well dressed people. And they came toting clipboards.

... These young kids plastered dozens of people with Obama stickers and otherwise fanned out to register voters and sign up volunteers. Let's just say they didn't come up empty. The fellow was on his second signup sheet when I left. Who knows how many others got signed up. It was professional. It was a clinic.

I'm not sure I can even adequately describe how completely foreign this is to Forsyth County. Yet, there they were, delivering a bit of presidential campaign reality to a place that gave Kerry little more than 18% of the vote in 2004.

A level of seriousness people.

Rob at Raising Kaine in Virginia provides information on Independence Day volunteering opportunities with the campaign in Old Dominion.

And Michael at Show Me Progress has a nice round-up of coverage and photos from Barack's recent visit to Independence, Missouri.

Happy Independence Day, y'all!

She's joined, across thousands of miles, by David in Hawaii who's expecting over 100 marchers supporting Barack in the Kailua parade and will be passing out snacks after the parade. Benny in Arizona is planning a potluck-style barbecue.

Think of it as one big family reunion for Tucson. It's time we put action to our words and really make an effort to come togehter for a common cause on our nations birthday!

That's what today's events are really about: many voices forming one nation, rising up from the grassroots and working together to change the course of history. Vote for Change events around the country are part of that story, too.

Bao from Virginia is organizing a voter registration drive at a local festival, where they'll help shape the upcoming election by making sure that more Americans participate in the political process established by the Founding Fathers and exercise the inalienable rights that Thomas Jefferson declared so many years ago.

There are over 1,000 events organized through My.BarackObama.com today, almost 800 of them part of the Vote for Change National Voter Registration Drive. On a day where 150,000 people and counting have declared their independence from a broken public financing system, and we look back to the ultimate declaration of our independence, take some time to not just reflect on our nation's history, but to help change its future. Find a Vote for Change event today or this weekend, and help reshape the electoral landscape.

"Pride For America"

Barack certainly has an inspirational American story of uplift. But he is not alone. Libby from Connecticut shared her story and why she is supporting Barack.

About three years ago I had just finished college and taken a job. This was a last-minute decision - I'd been applying for grad schools and had been accepted, but my father was dying. On top of the psychological turmoil that one might expect with losing a parent, there were financial implications we didn't see coming. I could not in good conscience choose school and incur debt while my parents' financial security was being buried in the piling medical bills.

You might suspect that we were uninsured or under insured, but it was quite the opposite. My dad was a civil servant for more than 20 years, and had great benefits. Even though my mom was also employed with good health insurance, he continued paying his own premiums for the most expensive and comprehensive plan, because he didn't want to worry about medical bills in his retirement. Despite the foresight and best efforts, Dad fell through the cracks of a crappy system.

Suddenly, collection notices showed up at my parents' home-- the same parents who faithfully paid bills on time and didn't even own credit cards when I was growing up. The week after we buried my dad, it broke my heart to find collection notices that he'd hidden away, I guess in embarrassment. In his right mind, he would never have done that, but sick people can't be expected to act and think as if they're healthy.

So I took a job, worked with my mom and siblings to dig us out of the hole, and eventually went back to grad school for Public Health going to classes at night. The plan is to continue on to med school, to do what I can not only to help ease individual suffering, but also to advocate for the sick and their families. That career path is a ways off, and right now the best thing I can do is support policymakers who are in a position to effect change.

The only solution is to elect lawmakers who share the belief that a certain level of health care is our right, and a social good that benefits all Americans. This is what I tell people who ask why my vote is for Obama.

Libby's story is one that many can relate to. Her struggles with the failing health care system are not uncommon among Americans today. Nonetheless, Libby, like most Americans, will proudly celebrate her country's birth today.

4th of July is one of our big holidays. It's probably no accident - I was born on Flag Day and my name means Freedom in Spanish. Each year it becomes more evident that the 4th is what we Floreses do right. We all pile into my oldest brother's house in mid-Michigan, where once a year, his wife permits the use of his prized smoker.

For Libby's family, the 4th of July is to celebrate their pride for America.

Patriotism to me means thoughtfully supporting ideals that living in the US guarantees us. By thoughtful, I mean that I believe in the fundamental importance of free speech...I suppose defending the beliefs that have made our country great is most important when, in times like these, it is most challenging.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, and share how you're celebrating July 4th at blog@barackobama.com.

Vote for Change: Alexandria, Virginia

Registering voters is one of the big tasks that our incredible Obama Organizing Fellows are taking on, and as the Vote for Change national voter registration drive kicks into high gear again over the July 4th holiday, fellows are taking to the streets to register as many voters as possible.

Meagan, a fellow based out of Alexandria, Virginia, is preparing for her first major effort since she started with the program...

We’ve done registration every day, but this is our first big event that is sort of our own. In the past, we’ve done some with the local Young Dems group, but this is the first that just the fellows have put on.

We have about 40 volunteers registered online and some others who have come in through e-mail confirmations and will be going out into the community to unregistered residences to try to get them registered. We're also going to be on the street in high traffic areas, like large apartment complexes, car parks, a waterfront area in Alexandria, and different shopping centers.

Meagan and her colleagues in the field have also been phonebanking and working with other local grassroots organizations to blanket the streets with volunteers this weekend.

It's efforts like theirs that are going to help change the electoral landscape and shape races up and down the ballot this November. There are over 600 Vote for Change events going on today, and hundreds more this weekend. Click here to find one near you, and volunteer your time to sign up more Americans for our ultimate civic duty.

Morning News

From In-Forum:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama brought his message of change to Fargo today, telling a group of veterans and about 1,000 spectators that he would improve veteran services, engage in diplomacy with Iran and roll back the Bush administration’s tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans.

The Illinois senator talked about veterans during a 16-minute speech and touched on an array of hot-button issues during a 36-minute question-and-answer period.

Dressed in khakis, a red tie and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, Obama emerged from the barn-red Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm in north Fargo to wild cheers. He opened on a light-hearted note.

“It is fun to be in Fargo,” he said, “although I have to say that it doesn’t look like it does in the movie.”

On the day before the nation celebrates its independence, Obama said that for the nation to honor its ideals, it must honor the men and women who defend them.

“This requires more than saluting our veterans as they march by in a Fourth of July parade,” he said. “It requires only sending them to war when we must and giving them the equipment they need.”

From the Grand Folks Herald:

In a state that hasn’t voted a Democrat for president for 44 years, Sen. Barack Obama worked the crowd of 1,500 who came from far and near to see what they think is history being made.

“I’m more enthusiastic, more excited than in any other election,” said Rick Santiago, Fargo, as he bounced his 4-month-old daughter, Brianna, and waited to see Obama under the trees of Yunker Farm in north Fargo.

The son of migrant workers from San Antonio, Santiago, 41, always voted Republican until George W. Bush said things he didn’t like after the 2000 primary season.

Obama’s message of change and hope rings true for him, Santiago said. “I believe in him, in what he says.”

For the first time, Santiago gave money to a campaign, Obama’s, and stood in line Tuesday for almost two hours to get one of the tickets for Thursday’s event for him, his wife and Brianna.

“The way this country is going, we need to do something,” Santiago said. “I’m looking toward the future for my daughter and my son, who is 16.”v Ralph Maxwell, a former U.S. attorney and state judge in Fargo, said he yearns for the change Obama promises. He’s been a Democrat since about the time he graduated from UND’s law school after the war once the old Non-Partisan League merged into the party, he said.

The 88-year-old Devils Lake native fit easily Friday into the very uniform he wore as a sergeant in an anti-aircraft unit in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Maxwell joined about 200 veterans present for the event, the day before Independence Day. Organizers said it was meant to honor veterans.

...Obama won loud applause when he promised to end the war in Iraq as soon as possible if he’s elected president, saying he would use some of the $10 billion spent monthly on the war to reduce the budget deficit.

Looking entirely at ease in brown slacks, burgundy tie and white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, Obama...spent 40 minutes answering questions from the crowd, using each one to launch in-depth into his major issues. One of the two dozen or more national reporters and photographers who follow the Obama campaign stop to stop said the Illinois senator was much more “off the cuff” Friday than usual.

Catching sight of a boy wearing a Chicago Bears cap, Obama insisted he get the next question, but first quizzed the boy, who gave his name as Chance, about the Bears’ prospects and player needs, and gibed the many Minnesota Viking fans present, saying “you all need to get re-educated.”

While 1,325 tickets were distributed for the event, organizers said there’s little doubt more people came at the last minute and were allowed in.

Ross and Beth Horner and their son, Alex, 15, drove three hours from Bismarck on Thursday to see Obama, after getting a friend to stand in line for tickets Tuesday.

She normally leans Republican, Beth said, canceling her husband’s vote. “But I like the change Obama represents. Our country does need a change, and I think he’s the guy to do it.”

Phil Harmeson, a UND official and longtime political analyst in North Dakota, said he was struck by the significance of the Obama phenomenon evident at Thursday’s event....

...“He’s making a stop in Fargo, North Dakota, in July when most times, the Democrats write off the state early,” Harmeson said. It means Obama is dictating the terms of the national campaign, he said, which would force McCain to stump here, a state he ordinarily could have counted on without a visit.

No Democratic presidential candidate has won North Dakota since Lyndon Johnson’s win in 1964.

But, for state politics, Obama’s visit is even more significant, Harmeson said. The good vibrations that Obama’s charm and gospel of change generate could be enough to swing, say, three state senate races to the Democrats, giving them control of at least one house in a legislature long dominated by Republicans, he said.

“So, this could have a dramatic impact on North Dakota politics,” Harmeson said, gesturing around the leafy park full of Obamanites.

...Obama promised to spend far more money on veterans if elected, from upping the G.I. Bill’s sweep to building new hospitals for veterans....

“There are many things that went wrong in the war in Iraq,” he said. “But caring for our veterans is one thing we can still get right.”

After his hourlong town hall meeting, Obama worked a long line of eager fans, shaking hands, taking compliments and posing for photos.

Tom Vacha was one.

“I told him, ‘When I was 12 years old, I rode my bike out here, to the airport right across the street and I shook John Kennedy’s hand,’” Vacha said. “And I told him ‘You sure are an inspiration and you remind me a lot of John Kennedy.’ And he said thank you.”

Vacha, 61, served in Korea during the Vietnam War. Kennedy campaigned in Fargo in 1959 when Vacha was 12 and lived a few blocks from the airport at what now is Yunker Farm.

From the Star Tribune:

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, speaking before veterans, their family members and others in Fargo this afternoon, said the country must do better by those who serve in the military.

Speaking for about 20 minutes at the Children's Museum at Yunker Farm under a bright sky...Obama noted that the Fourth of July is not only about barbecues, parades and fireworks, but the United States should be sending its young men and women "to war [only] when we must and giving them the equipment they need."

He also contended the medical and financial help for veterans when they return home needs to improve. "It doesn't have to be this way," he said.

Whether going to war is the right decision or not, Obama added, "Caring for our veterans is something that we can still get right."

He pledged, if elected, to reduce the red tape that veterans face when seeking medical treatment or help with education and housing benefits.

He said he wants to expand funding to help veterans buy homes, and medical treatment for mental health care and brain injuries needs "to dramatically improve."

As for financial aid for education, Obama said, the government needs to look to how the GI Bill helped World War II veterans and pay the full bill for college.

From Reuters:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama pushed deep into Republican territory in North Dakota on Thursday, saying he saw the potential for a significant political realignment in November's election.

Staking another claim to a state usually ignored by Democratic contenders for the White House, Obama said Americans of all political leanings were hungry for something different after eight years of President George W. Bush.

"I'm a firm believer that 90 percent of success is showing up and Democrats haven't been showing up in these places," he said in Fargo, North Dakota, a state that has not backed a Democrat since Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

The visit to North Dakota, where Obama pushed his plans to help military veterans, followed stops in conservative sections of Ohio and Colorado this week. On Friday's July 4th holiday, he will visit Montana, another state that traditionally votes Republican.

"If you look at the trends in many of these states, there are more and more independents who aren't tied to a political party and I want to make sure that we are reaching out to them," Obama said.

"I think there is a possibility of a significant realignment politically in this election," he said. "Now is the time for us to have a conversation with all Americans, not just some Americans, about how we can pull together."

...He has promised to open offices in all 50 states and aired advertising in 21 states, including several traditional Republican strongholds including North Dakota, Montana and even Alaska.

Obama hopes dissatisfaction with Bush and Republicans will help swing independents and some Republicans his way. Democratic voter registration and turnout has been higher than Republicans nationally and the Obama campaign has organized a national voter registration drive.

"Look at today's news -- 62,000 jobs lost, over 80 percent of American people think we are moving in the wrong direction, there is unease all over the country," Obama said.

"I believe the American people across the political spectrum are hungry for something different, something new," he told reporters in a brief tarmac news conference after touching down at the Fargo airport.

150,000 Declarations Of Independence

Thank you to all the supporters who have declared their independence from a broken system.
Not Without A Fight

As campaign manager David Plouffe explained, "John McCain, the RNC, the shadowy outside groups are not going to let this election happen without a fight." But we know that we are not alone either. Since Barack opted out of the public financing system just two weeks ago, almost 150,000 donors have likewise declared their independence from our broken system and helped build the small dollar donation network that fuels our campaign.

Just listen to these regular people who have already declared their independence...

Jeremy from Washington, D.C.:

I support public financing, but I also support Sen. Obama's decision to rely on small donations from people like me -- a graduate with minimal income -- in order to avoid being handicapped by a broken system. The Republicans are too good at gaming the fundraising rules, and this election is too important. I hope you'll join me so the campaign can show that this decision is supported by the American people.

Patricia from California:

This election is not going to be easy, no matter how great the polls are looking now. There are a legions of conservatives who will stop at nothing to derail this campaign. We've got to keep funding Barack Obama in order to keep up.

Eliot from Illinois:

Opting out of the Federal funds program is the only way we can effectively counter the "Swift Boaters" or their successor groups this election cycle. It is important that we have the funds the get the real message out..past all the clutter that is bound to muck up this coming election. And it is people like you and me that will make the real difference against the Washington power brokers.

We're almost at our goal of 150,000 independent citizens by our 232nd Independence Day - donate now and put us over the top!

"One Step Closer To Real Change"

Over the past couple of weeks, the campaign has asked grassroots supporters to declare their independence from a broken system. We've asked you to tell us why you think it's important that this campaign is truly funded by the people.

Here are some comments from people who matched donations or had their first donation matched...

Cilly from Texas:

When I decided to make this donation, I asked myself what is important about this cause? My answer was if this man is elected president all of the other things I am passionate about will be closer to resolution like environmental concerns, homeless and uninsured children, a neverending war sending home unappreciated veterans. This small donation is one step closer to real change.

Nancy from Wisconsin:

I hope you are as inspired by Barack Obama as my husband and I are. He represents a real opportunity for our country to be something different, something better than it has been in a very long time (perhaps, ever). We have donated many times to his campaign, and even though the amount has been small, it has made a difference.

Let's bring about this much needed change together.

Virginia from California:

As someone who came of age in the 60's this presidential election has been a long time coming, and I am very excited by the possibility of electing Barack Obama as our next president. It is inspiring to see the numbers of young people as well as my generation and older participating in this campaign. While there seems to be a huge groundswell of energy and enthusiasm, it is paramount that we stay connected, engaged and active in growing this movement and getting the result we want in this election.

I have never been a political activist, but it really is time for all of us to be heard and seize this opportunity for change. Thank you for joining me in contributing to Obama's campaign. If possible, let's do it not just this once, but as often and as much as we can and get others to do the same.

Kathleen in New Jersey:

I am so proud to be part of this grassroots movement that is changing politics from the same-old to the new...of integrity, organization, and vitality. I have given small donations throughout Obama's campaign and am proud to do so as often as possible. Welcome to a positive and powerful group of people!

Let us know what you're doing in honor of this weekend in the comment section below.

Change From The Bottom Up

As July 4 approaches, countless Americans take the time to reflect on their personal definitions of patriotism and Independence Day. For many, this means finding new ways to demonstrate their loyalty and pride for America.

Kate, a 27-year old family attorney from San Francisco, believes that patriotism is “not blindly accepting the words of the powerful.” For her, patriotism is “independent thought,” and Kate, like many other Americans, feels Obama represents her brand of patriotism.

I believe that Obama’s way is new, but it is not naïve. I find him to be forthright, inspired, warm and wise. I donate money when I can—I believe in this patchwork fundraising. He is literally being funded by Americans because we believe in him.

Not only does Kate feel Barack represents her brand of patriotism, she also feels that he represents independence from a broken system…

I think that the greatest independence Obama could provide for us is by bettering out relations with the rest of the world. Where Bush has pushed, pushed, and pushed again, I believe Senator Obama understands the soft touch of diplomacy. We are a blessed nation, but we have been very badly represented to the rest of the world for the last 8 years.

Jed from Connecticut similarly feels that Barack represents his brand of patriotism…

So many hopes are on Obama to take on our entrenched system and fix it. Much of one’s success is being open to dissenting opinions, and surrounding oneself with capable advisors. With Obama’s background in law, community organizing, and education, this approach comes naturally to him – so I think many new and positive changes will be possible under his leadership and administration.

Frustrated by issues such as energy independence, climate change, environmental protection and healthcare, Jed chooses to support Obama because of his background in community organizing…

To me that says it all; he believes in bottom-up rather than top-down power. I believe he has the best chance of challenging the entrenched interests Washington – regarding energy, foreign policy, you name-it.

After declaring your independence, share your idea of independence and patriotism in the comment section below.

Response from Barack on FISA and Discussion with Policy Staff

Barack is on the road today, but he wrote a response that he asked be posted on the blog. You'll find it below.

In addition, for the next 30 minutes or so, three members of our policy staff will be in the comments on this post to respond to any questions you have. Danielle Gray is our Deputy National Policy Director, Denis McDonough is a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor, and Ben Rhodes is Foreign Policy Advisor and Senior Speechwriter.

I hope that you'll join the discussion in the comments thread below, and continue to use the My.BarackObama.com tools as a resource for organizing in your local communities and around the issues that are important to you and to victory in November.

Here's the note from Barack:

I want to take this opportunity to speak directly to those of you who oppose my decision to support the FISA compromise.

This was not an easy call for me. I know that the FISA bill that passed the House is far from perfect. I wouldn't have drafted the legislation like this, and it does not resolve all of the concerns that we have about President Bush's abuse of executive power. It grants retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that may have violated the law by cooperating with the Bush Administration's program of warrantless wiretapping. This potentially weakens the deterrent effect of the law and removes an important tool for the American people to demand accountability for past abuses. That's why I support striking Title II from the bill, and will work with Chris Dodd, Jeff Bingaman and others in an effort to remove this provision in the Senate.

But I also believe that the compromise bill is far better than the Protect America Act that I voted against last year. The exclusivity provision makes it clear to any President or telecommunications company that no law supersedes the authority of the FISA court. In a dangerous world, government must have the authority to collect the intelligence we need to protect the American people. But in a free society, that authority cannot be unlimited. As I've said many times, an independent monitor must watch the watchers to prevent abuses and to protect the civil liberties of the American people. This compromise law assures that the FISA court has that responsibility

The Inspectors General report also provides a real mechanism for accountability and should not be discounted. It will allow a close look at past misconduct without hurdles that would exist in federal court because of classification issues. The recent investigation uncovering the illegal politicization of Justice Department hiring sets a strong example of the accountability that can come from a tough and thorough IG report.

The ability to monitor and track individuals who want to attack the United States is a vital counter-terrorism tool, and I'm persuaded that it is necessary to keep the American people safe -- particularly since certain electronic surveillance orders will begin to expire later this summer. Given the choice between voting for an improved yet imperfect bill, and losing important surveillance tools, I've chosen to support the current compromise. I do so with the firm intention -- once I’m sworn in as President -- to have my Attorney General conduct a comprehensive review of all our surveillance programs, and to make further recommendations on any steps needed to preserve civil liberties and to prevent executive branch abuse in the future.

Now, I understand why some of you feel differently about the current bill, and I'm happy to take my lumps on this side and elsewhere. For the truth is that your organizing, your activism and your passion is an important reason why this bill is better than previous versions. No tool has been more important in focusing peoples' attention on the abuses of executive power in this Administration than the active and sustained engagement of American citizens. That holds true -- not just on wiretapping, but on a range of issues where Washington has let the American people down.

I learned long ago, when working as an organizer on the South Side of Chicago, that when citizens join their voices together, they can hold their leaders accountable. I'm not exempt from that. I'm certainly not perfect, and expect to be held accountable too. I cannot promise to agree with you on every issue. But I do promise to listen to your concerns, take them seriously, and seek to earn your ongoing support to change the country. That is why we have built the largest grassroots campaign in the history of presidential politics, and that is the kind of White House that I intend to run as President of the United States -- a White House that takes the Constitution seriously, conducts the peoples' business out in the open, welcomes and listens to dissenting views, and asks you to play your part in shaping our country’s destiny.

Democracy cannot exist without strong differences. And going forward, some of you may decide that my FISA position is a deal breaker. That's ok. But I think it is worth pointing out that our agreement on the vast majority of issues that matter outweighs the differences we may have. After all, the choice in this election could not be clearer. Whether it is the economy, foreign policy, or the Supreme Court, my opponent has embraced the failed course of the last eight years, while I want to take this country in a new direction. Make no mistake: if John McCain is elected, the fundamental direction of this country that we love will not change. But if we come together, we have an historic opportunity to chart a new course, a better course.

So I appreciate the feedback through my.barackobama.com, and I look forward to continuing the conversation in the months and years to come. Together, we have a lot of work to do.

Update: The discussion is going in the comments section. Here's a pic of Denis, Ben and Danielle right now reading the comments (regular HQ blogger Sam Graham-Felsen is back in that empty chair; he took the pic with his phone):

Update II: More than 600 comments and 90 minutes later (three times as long as we'd asked of them!) our policy folks are signing off. Thanks to Denis, Danielle and Ben for their time, and to all of you for your participation. We look forward to continuing the discussion.

Barack In Fargo, North Dakota

Barack spoke today at the Children's Museum at Yunker Farm in Fargo, North Dakota. He talked about the importance of Veterans, saying...

Tomorrow, we’ll mark the 4th of July with barbecues and parades; fireworks and time off with loved ones. We’ll also have the opportunity to give thanks for our troops and veterans. Their sacrifice has made possible the freedom that we enjoy. And keeping faith with those who serve must always be a core American value and a cornerstone of American patriotism. Because America's commitment to its servicemen and women begins at enlistment, and it must never end.

...The brave Americans who fight today believe deeply in this country. And no matter how many you meet, or how many stories of heroism you hear, every encounter reminds that they are truly special. That through their service, they are living out the ideals that stir so many of us as Americans - pride, duty, and sacrifice.

Some of the most inspiring are those you meet at places like Walter Reed Army Medical Center. They are young men and women who may have lost a limb or even their ability to take care of themselves, but they will never lose the pride they feel for their country. It's this classically American optimism that makes you realize the quality of person we have serving in the United States Armed Forces.

This, after all, is what led them to wear the uniform in the first place - their unwavering belief in the idea of America. The idea that no matter where you come from, or what you look like, or who your parents are, this is a place where anything is possible; where anyone can make it; where we look out for each other, and take care of each other; where we rise and fall as one nation - as one people. It's an idea that's worth fighting for - an idea for which so many Americans have given that last full measure of devotion.

Here are some pictures from the event...

Read the full remarks, as prepared for delivery...

Barack To Speak About Veterans In Fargo, North Dakota

Barack will be in Fargo, North Dakota this afternoon to talk about Veterans, their service to this country and how we can serve them when they return home.

Here are some of Barack's plans and stances on Veterans issues:

Treating our Veterans with Respect

Barack Obama introduced the Dignity for Wounded Warriors Act. The bill improves the condition of troop housing at hospitals like Walter Reed, streamlines the process for wounded troops deciding whether or not they can stay in the military, provides greater information to recovering servicemembers, requires the hiring of more caseworkers, and provides more support to family members who care for injured troops.

Sheltering and Rehabilitating Homeless Veterans

One in three homeless males in this country is a veteran. That’s unacceptable. Barack Obama authored legislation to extend and expand critical homeless veteran rehabilitation programs and make affordable housing available. As president, he will establish a Zero Tolerance policy for veterans falling into homelessness.

Fighting for Disability Benefits

In Illinois, Obama led efforts to empower veterans who received inadequate disability benefits. He forced the VA to notify veterans in Illinois and other states about their right to review past claims. The resulting outreach led to significant numbers of veterans getting the benefits they deserve. As president, he will rebuild the Veterans Benefits Administration by switching to electronic records, hiring more caseworkers, and providing them more training and accountability.

Treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Barack Obama helped stop a VA effort to force some veterans to prove again that they suffered from PTSD to maintain their benefits. He also passed an amendment ensuring that all servicemembers would be properly screened for TBI. In 2007, Obama helped introduce a bill to personalize and improve overall care for TBI patients.

We have to understand that for far too many troops and their families, the war doesn’t end when they come home. Just the other day our own government’s top psychiatric researcher said that because of inadequate mental health care, the number of suicides among veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan may actually exceed the number of combat deaths.

In the Senate, Obama helped lead a bipartisan effort to stop the unfair practice of kicking out troops who suffer from them. And when he is President, he will enhance mental health screening and treatment at all levels: from enlistment, to deployment, to reentry into civilian life.

Easing the Transition of Veterans into Civilian Life

Barack Obama introduced legislation that would help troops transition to civilian life after they leave the military. His legislation would provide new veterans with electronic medical and service records, monitor health trends and improve transportation services.

Visit our Veterans for Obama page to learn more about the Veterans community.

"We Need Real Change"

Independence Day is tomorrow, and starting today, people across the country will be celebrating the birth of this country. And while they celebrate what happened in 1776, they look forward to the change that Barack can bring.

Throughout the country, supporters will be going to Vote for Change voter registration events to bring new people into the political process. These same supporters are declaring their independence online...

John in North Carolina:

I am a 45 year old lifelong Democrat but this my first experience donating and actively participating in the process. Twenty years of Bush-Clinton is far too much. We need real change and to take the country back from all the lobbyists and back-room politics that never get anything accomplished except making the rich richer.

Kate in California:

I am so fired up about Barack finally clinching the nomination, and I want to see him continue to run for president ETHICALLY--without massive big Washington lobbyist support... that's why he needs us!

Vanessa in Georgia:

I chose to give to Barack Obama's campaign because I truly believe in the ideals and the movement that this campaign has brought forth. I am very excited about this man and the inspiration that he gives to all of us, that we can be apart of this government, our government, not a part from it. Thank you for believing too! Yes WE Can!!!

Kendall in California:

How great is it knowing my funds are matched by real people and not being trumped by lobbyists!
After declaring your independence, sign up to attend a Vote for Change event in your area.

Morning News

From the Washington Post:

Sen. Barack Obama exhorted Americans on Wednesday "to step into the strong currents of history" and volunteer for service to their country, pledging to dramatically expand opportunities for those accepting his challenge.

... "That's the bet our Founding Fathers were making all of those years -- that our individual destinies could be tied together in the common destiny of democracy, that government depends not just on the consent of the governed but on the service of citizens," he told a small audience filling a gymnasium at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. "That's what history calls us to do, because loving your country shouldn't just mean watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. Loving your country must mean accepting your responsibility to do your part to change it."

Throughout the week, Obama has been striving to win over voters in Republican areas, defending his patriotism in Independence, Mo., on Monday; pledging to expand federal assistance to religious social service groups in rural Ohio on Tuesday; and preaching service in central Colorado on Wednesday. He will speak about veterans in Fargo, N.D., on Thursday, then will highlight the theme of family on Friday as he celebrates Independence Day in Butte, Mont., with his wife and two daughters.

He emphasized what he called "the enormity of the American accomplishment," touring Peterson Air Force Base here and visiting the ultra-secretive North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command headquarters and the Air Force Academy.

... "There is a lesson to be learned from generations who have served: from soldiers and sailors, airmen and Marines, suffragists and freedom riders, teachers and doctors, cops and firefighters," he said. "It's the lesson that in America, each of us is free to seek our own dreams, but we must also serve a common purpose, a higher purpose."

From the Los Angeles Times:

On day three of a campaign swing meant to showcase his values, Barack Obama spoke about the importance of national service, telling an audience here that his work as a young community organizer gave him needed direction at a time when he was adrift.

... Speaking here on Wednesday morning, Obama said: "Growing up, I wasn't always sure who I was or where I was going. That's what happens sometimes when you don't have a father in the home. But during my first two years of college, perhaps because of the values my mother had taught me -- values of hard work, honesty and empathy -- perhaps because they had resurfaced after a long hibernation or perhaps because of the example of wonderful teachers and lasting friends, I began to notice a world beyond myself."

... He has put out a $3.5-billion national service plan that would double the size of the Peace Corps, recruit retired engineers and scientists to tutor students, and offer college students tuition aid in return for community service.

He has pledged to pay for the plan by closing corporate loopholes and ending the Iraq war, among other things.

A new piece of Obama's plan, described Wednesday, involves training veterans for jobs in industries devoted to renewable energy sources. Obama aides said they could not yet estimate the cost of his so-called Green Vet initiative.

"To marshal [veterans'] talents in building a new energy economy, I want to launch an initiative to give our veterans the training they need to succeed in the green jobs of the future," Obama said. "It's time to end our energy dependence at home so our national security isn't held hostage to oil and gas from abroad."

From the Denver Post:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Wednesday waded into the state's GOP evangelical power base, encouraging Americans to serve their country by working in neighborhoods, schools and the military, and pledging to significantly expand opportunities for those who choose to shape the country's future.

"We need your service, right now, at this moment — our moment — in history," Obama told about 300 invited guests in the aptly named Lions Den Gym on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs campus. "Loving your country shouldn't just mean watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. Loving your country must mean accepting your responsibility to do your part to change it."

... "Democrats should not run away from faith and service. It didn't used to be the tradition of Democrats, but it's happened in recent times," [U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar] said. "Obama has a sense of independence."

In Colorado Springs, Obama vowed that if he's elected president, he will add 92,000 ground forces to the country's military and more than triple the number of AmeriCorps workers, expanding their role to "meet national goals" of providing health care and education, as well as restoring the country's standing in the world.

His proposals, most of which he unveiled last year, also included doubling the size of the Peace Corps, creating a tax credit making the first $4,000 of college tuition free for students who do 100 hours of public service a year, and expanding YouthBuild, a program where young people build affordable housing.

He also promised to create a "Green Vet Initiative," which would offer counseling and job placement for veterans who wanted to enter the renewable energy field.

From the Wall Street Journal:

Speaking near the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama pledged to create new incentives to motivate Americans to serve their country.

His campaign has laid out a more-pressing proposal: to defeat John McCain in the Republican-leaning Mountain states. Although these states account for a small portion of electoral votes, they could make the difference in a tight race.

Both presidential hopefuls have made the West a focus of their general-election strategies, with a particular emphasis on Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado, states with independent-minded voters who have mostly mostly gone Republican in recent presidential contests.

Sen. Obama has said he hopes to further expand the Democratic electoral map by capturing North Dakota and Montana, states largely ignored by the McCain campaign.

... "You have a lot of ways to get to [the] 270" electoral votes needed to win the White House, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said at a recent briefing. "Our goal is not to be reliant on one state on Nov. 4."

... Sen. Obama has recruited Federico Peña, a former Denver mayor who served as Energy and Transportation secretary during the Clinton administration, to spearhead outreach to the large Hispanic communities in Western states.

The Illinois senator has also held several meetings with Indian tribal leaders in Western states. Wednesday, he met with military officials at the U.S. Air Force Academy and Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

"We're going to fight as hard as we can in these states," Sen. Obama told reporters during a Memorial Day event in New Mexico. "We want to send the message now that ... I expect to win them."

From In-Forum:

It’s a rare presidential election year when a candidate of any political party visits North Dakota more than once. In some elections, even once is a big deal. So Sen. Barack Obama’s stop in Fargo today could be a hint of what’s to come, not only from the Obama camp, but also from Sen. John McCain, the Republican standard-bearer.

Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton packed ’em in during back-to-back campaign rallies in April in Grand Forks. The 1,000 available tickets for Obama’s visit today were hot commodities. If there were space at Fargo’s Yunker Farm, he could attract 10,000 or more.

... at least one public poll and several “internal” polls suggest Obama has a chance to beat McCain in the Peace Garden State. The polls are intriguing because they are the first indications that North Dakota’s 40-year Republican grip on presidential politics is not as strong as it once was.

... Obama said he’s running a 50-state campaign. Thus far, he’s been true to that strategy, and it’s working for him. North Dakota has rarely been a player in the outcome of a presidential contest, but if the race turns out to be as close as analysts say it will be, every state is in play. If Obama can challenge in a state that’s gone for the Republican candidate since 1964, he can challenge anywhere.

Senator Obama on June Job Numbers

Senator Obama today the following statement on today's jobs report...

As we head into the 4th of July weekend, today's report that our economy has lost another 62,000 jobs is a stark reminder that far too many Americans will spend this holiday out of work and struggling to provide for their families because of the failed policies of the last eight years.

Our economy has now shed 438,000 jobs over the past six months, while workers' wages fail to keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries and healthcare. The American people are paying the price for the failed economic policies of the past eight years, and we can't afford four more years of more of the same. That is the essential issue of this campaign because Senator McCain has fully embraced the Bush economic agenda. I believe it has to change.

But, as these numbers demonstrate, the American people can't wait another six months. We need action now.

That's why I'm calling on Congress and the President to enact real, immediate relief with energy rebates for working families this summer, a fund to help families avoid foreclosure, extended benefits for the long-term jobless, and assistance to states that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn.

As President, I'll move us in a new direction with policies to restore broad-based, bottom up growth that benefits all Americans. I will provide working families with a middle-class tax cut; fight for affordable health care and college tuition; work to help raise workers' wages, and invest in infrastructure, education and a clean energy future to create millions of new jobs. That's the change the American people need.

Learn more about Senator Obama's plan for the economy.

Today, two days before what many consider to be the most patriotic day of the year, Senator Obama gave a speech in Colorado Springs, highlighting the importance of service and each person's responsibility to take an active role in their community.

Cori, a graduate of Colorado State University and a Colorado Springs local, introduced the Senator, sharing with the audience why she had chosen to get involved with the campaign:

I recently became engaged to a wonderful soldier in the United States Army who is soon going to be deployed for his second tour of duty in Iraq. I am immensely proud of my fiance and his service to our country. Many of us have friends and loved ones serving overseas and I know it is easy to feel scared and isolated. However, I have found the best comfort and solace in knowing that not only military families are supporting my fiance's service to our country but so is the next president of the United States.

Cori spoke about the important role that service plays in the lives of Coloradans and all Americans and explaining why Senator Obama expects us to give back to our country:

Whether it's Colorado Springs' brave men and women in uniform serving overseas or Americorps volunteers in Denver working in inner-city schools or Peacecorps volunteers from Grand Junction bringing much needed relief to a community abroad, he knows that working together we can strengthen our local communities, change the country and face common challenges we face here at home and around the world.

I believe that Senator Obama is not only the leader who will bring my soldier home safely, but the one who has already brought people together from all over the country through all walks of life to make it clear that we have a hand a hand in our future and you should too. I believe that we can rely on him. I believe that we can respect him because he respects us and all those who serve us.

People traveled from across the state to hear Senator Obama's speech, many of whom had been actively serving their country -- whether they are involved through Teach for America, a branch of the military, or helping their community on a local level.

Tom traveled from Golden to hear the Senator's speech and said he was supportive of the Senator's message of serving our country:

He wants us involved and all this ground up effort is the key to this...The people of America are hungry for something like this, so I know that there are going to be millions who take him up on his challenge... you want to be in the military, you want to serve your country, you want to be a teacher, you want to go to inner city schools. We will help you. What a fantastic two way street it is, in a time when Washington has been a one way street, a street away from us.

Here's a video of other Coloradans talking about Senator Obama and what service means to them:

Unite for Change: Lombard, Illinois

On Saturday night in Lombard, Illinois, almost 30 Obama supporters gathered to spend their Saturday night talking about how to get Barack and other Democratic candidates elected this November.

Amanda, a life-long resident of Lombard, has never been involved in politics before. This was her first time hosting an event, and even though she hates speaking in public, she put her fears behind her to share her story and get others involved.

We need to get out there and talk to our neighbors. I mean, this is how it all got started, at the grassroots. People are excited and they want to get involved.

Look around. There are more then 25 people here that I’ve never met, and I’m sure you haven’t met them either. If I can do it, then anyone can do it.

Rupa, a therapist for children who come have abusive families, said that she had a tough time choosing between Barack and Hillary. But after she ready “Dreams Of My Father”, she felt connected to him. As mother of a bi-racial child and a daughter of immigrants, she saw pieces of herself in him.

He represents all of us, he’s the face of everyone. And even though he went through a tough childhood, he still has hope. He hasn’t been disillusioned by his work in politics – and let me tell you, the South Side of Chicago is not that nice. But he still sees the good in people. He believes in us.

Lombard is located in Dupage County, a highly republican territory. In over 30 years, Dupage has never elected Democratic candidates at the state level. But those involved in Dupage politics are excited to see the effect that Barack and his volunteers can have on the election.

Bob, a former York Township chair, said...

We have a real shot here. We can help get Democrats elected up and down the ticket. It’s easy to get plugged into your local democratic organization. In Dupage, you can get trained to be a voter registrar and talk to people about Obama and the other candidates.

This is a true grassroots movement. And with Barack running, it’s very helpful. He can make substitutive changes in Washington.

Stop by your local Democratic office this week to find out how you can your local candidates.

Vote for Change: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

This July 4th, as Americans celebrate our nation's independence, volunteers across the country will be mobilizing to bring more voices into the political process through our ongoing Vote for Change voter registration drive. David from Philadelphia is planning a whopping nine voter registration events this week alone:

I signed up 400 new voters during the primary, and of the 400 I got 123 on the very last day. It was a really satisfying experience to get all those people, but there are still so many who are not registered to vote, and I feel like if we just give them the opportunity to do it, then people are more likely to do it. I actually have 9 other events this week. I want to be there any time we have a public festival or a parade.

David is expecting 16 other volunteers to help him out at the the Welcome, America! festival on Philadelphia's Ben Franklin Parkway, where over a million people are expected to turn out for a John Legend concert and a fireworks display. He says he's met all of them through My.BarackObama.com, and that they were excited to be able to mix their civic duty with their 4th of July celebration.

He's not alone this weekend - there are Vote for Change events planned all around America. Check out the Vote for Change web page, and find an event to volunteer at near you. Together, we can reshape the electoral landscape and help shape the outcome of races up and down the ballot this fall.

Video: Barack on Service: "I am asking you to change history's course"

Here's the full video of Barack speech from Colorado Spings, Colorado earlier today:

Barack talked about the divide between our day to day lives and what happens in the wider world, and the need to bridge that divide:

This is the divide that separates you from the ability to shape your own destiny. So I am asking you – on this 4th of July – to reject that divide, to step into the strong currents of history, and to shape your country’s future. Because your own story and the American story are not separate, they are shared.

He also made a new call to service, an issue that has long been at the heart of this campaign:

We need your service, right now, at this moment – our moment – in history. I’m not going to tell you what your role should be; that’s for you to discover. But I am going to ask you to play your part; ask you to stand up; ask you to put your foot firmly into the current of history. I am asking you to change history’s course.

You can watch more videos and highlights at YouTube.com/barackobama.

Organizing Fellows: Andy in Columbus

Throughout the next six weeks, we will be following Obama Organizing Fellows as they share their stories and their experiences. They’ll talk about the people they meet, the hardships of organizing, what the campaign means to them, and how this summer is potentially changing their life.

Andy is an Organizing Fellow in Columbus, Ohio. He’ll share a re-cap of his week every Wednesday.

I was raised by a mother from Flint and a father from Redford, Michigan. Their childhood homes have been hit hardest by the economic woes facing this country. My parents worked hard in the public education system to give me a better opportunity than they had as children. Because of them, I have learned that the promise of the American Dream is to use the resources we have to create opportunities for others. It is a Dream that I will always cherish. But I have learned it is also a Dream that must be defended. I learned this lesson from many places in my life, but I learned it best from my stepfather. He was a hard working electrician for about forty years of his life. Unfortunately, he contracted lung cancer from the asbestos he was exposed to on the job.

As my family gathered around his deathbed just before last Thanksgiving we gave our final thanks for the moments we shared. I was most thankful for the loving way my mom and him took care of each other. But I will always wish that the health care companies took care of him as well. I often wonder if he had better preventive health care if he would still be here today. I will never know the answer to that question, but what I do know is that we need a health care system that takes care of every American and not just the wealthy. That is what brought me to this historic movement for change.

It has been an honor to be part of the organizing fellowship with the campaign. Never in my life have I seen such a talented group of people from all backgrounds come together in defense of the American Dream.

I have met amazing organizing fellows like Michael. Michael’s father escaped from forced labor, swam for 10 hours through shark infested waters and then chartered his way to the U.S.A. to live the American Dream. Michael wants to create change to insure that America continues to be the land of opportunity that his father arrived in many years ago.

I have met wonderful grassroots volunteers like Carlotta. She works in preventive health care and smoking cessation and has seen health care plans become increasingly out of reach for Americans like my stepfather. She knows she must take action in order to protect the values of this country.

Organizing can be incredibly uplifting but also difficult at times. However, I know no matter what happens that my family and my friends like Michael and Carlotta will be there to help me through it.

The most important thing I have learned through them and this campaign is that it takes hard work to create the change this country needs. That is why I will be working all day on my birthday this July 4th. I would be honored if you would celebrate this country’s (and coincidentally, my own) birthday this July 4th by helping us with our Voter Registration Drive. I can think of no greater way to defend the American Dream this July 4th than by working to empower fellow citizens with the right to vote.

Check back next week for more from Andy in Columbus.

A Broken System

Since Barack made his decision to opt-out of our broken public financing system, he's received incredible support from Americans who recognize that the only way to change the way we finance campaigns is to change the way Washington works. Almost 150,000 of you have declared your independence from that system, and we need just a few more donations before the 4th of July to show the Washington establishment that there is a way to make sure that the people have more influence than PACs and lobbyists: by financing our elections through small contributions from ordinary Americans.

The comments that so many of you have left with your donations for fellow supporters are truly inspiring. It's time show Washington that we can and will fix this broken system.

Andreas from Seattle has declared his independence:

It is time for a change in the way politic
