Doors for Obama-Biden Idea

Okay...Halloween is coming...trick or treaters coming and so are campaigners, mailpersons, etc...here is the idea: Decorate our doors with Obama stuff. When they come, they will see the Obama adorned door. If enough in a neighborhood...what an impact. Spread the word nation wide to any supporters you know. Leave them up through election day and McCain people will know they met their match. Perhaps we can get the campaign to have a contest, or someone here knows how to get a picture submission blog going. I am going to do all I can with my limited internet campaigning skills....Please help in any way you can to spread the word.

OBAMA-BIDEN Doors for Change

11th hour shenanigans from Clinton

I know I've been remiss in posting here...but that's because I've been posting HERE!

http://www.obamastraws.blogpspot.com

My blog, "The Obama Minute", has been getting hundreds of hits a day and has had nearly 10,000 page views! Better still, it's not just for reading up on the latest; it suggestions quick, easy actions which can be taken for Barack NOW (letters to the editor, voting in online polls, petitions, etc.), and includes all of the pertinent links.

But I digress.

Sen. Clinton's comments today, implying that Sen. McCain would make a better president than Sen. Obama, simply cannot go unchallenged. Please read this post and then contact DNC Chair Howard Dean, as well as your local Democratic congresspeople.

http://obamastraws.blogspot.com/2008/03/disloyal-democrat.html

Fabulous honk-n-wave in Peterborough tonight

Four of the students from the high school where I teach, High Mowing School in Wilton (none of whom will be eligible to vote this time 'round, unfortunately!) accompanied me to the honk-n-wave rush hour visibility event in Peterborough tonight. It was so gratifying to see these high school students so happily and energetically involved in the process.

A nearly ceaseless chorus of car horns accompanied our 90-minute stay at the Route 101/202 intersection. The people were really visibly and audibly FIRED UP for Barack! We had 10+ folks at the intersection until it got too dark to see Barack's royal blue signs (I LOVE that shade of blue --- now, more than ever!). Our sign collection was, as usual, mixed: homemade and professionally printed.

HRC's campaign had three supporters, all with printed, non-homemade signs only. They were marginalized to the edge of the intersection...they didn't seem to dare to even think about approaching us, as we had all four corners of the junction!

We even got a few truckers (normally pretty reticent with the appreciation) to sound their air horns for Barack as they barreled on through. AWESOME!!!

Thanks to Roy Swonger and crew in Merrimack, NH

I had a great time working at the Pre-Primary event with Roy Swonger and friends (most affiliated with the Manchester Obama office) yesterday morning at the Merrimack Transfer Station.

I enjoyed hours of interesting conversation with the 10 or so folks that were there over the course of the six-hour event. Roy and his wife Trish kept us fueled with cookies, donuts, and hot chocolate, and fortunately the temperatures were much more moderate than they have been...high 20s, low 30s.

The good people of Merrimack (and LOTS of their dogs!!!) were a little more muted in their support for Obama than what I've been seeing on the streets in Peterborough, but the percentage of those expressing their support (politely --- lots of waves and thumbs up, fewer honks) was extremely high...I'd say 50-60%. Further, those who obviously were NOT Obama fans were also very civilized about it.

A wonderful day, made possible by the energy and initiative of Roy and his family! Thank you all so much for a great day of visibility for Obama.

Barack's pro-choice record

I received a disturbing piece of mail from Hillary's campaign yesterday. It said that Obama's record on choice was in doubt, since he'd merely voted "present" when several measures regarding choice came up in the Illinois senate.

As choice is one of the issues I follow most closely, this mailing hit me in the gut. Of course it's not true, I thought; Barack has an excellent record on choice and top ratings from the issue groups around choice. I set it aside and sat down to watch the debates.

When I went in to phonebank this afternoon, I was informed by Matt Reimer, Peterborough headquarters chief, that the Obama campaign was well aware of the mailing. The truth is that the choice measures had indeed come up in the Illinois senate, but not on their own. Rather, they were riders on much larger bills --- bills which had a lot of damaging components (on completely separate, non-choice issues) which Obama could not support. Hence, Obama (and many, many other Illionois state senators who support choice) voted "present", as a way of protesting the obfuscation in the presentation of the choice measures.

Expect a lot more misinformation from Hillary's campaign in the coming days. She wasn't expecting to have to use NH as her "firewall" state, but after her Iowa loss, the stakes are all too high for her. Be on guard, everyone!!!

For the first time this campaign season (and only on the heels of her stinging Iowa defeat), Hillary supporters are flooding the state this week.

For the first time out of the five visibility events I've done, we had company on the streets of Peterborough at our "visibility" (honk'n'wave) events on friday 1/4/08. Still, it was interesting to see our group of 6 of 7 animated, energetic, multi-generational supporters out there in the 2-degree weather at 7 am on Friday morning, while her two supporters grimly held their signs and sipped coffee. Our local supporters were joined by Greg, a young law student from New Jersey who'd come up for the long weekend to do whatever he could for Obama, from sign-waving to canvassing. More interesting still were the details about our signs: ours were largely hand-made, with a few printed Obama signs mixed in. HRC's were tall, with 3 or 4 printed HRC signs, and no personal touch whatsoever. It's a seemingly small, yet important, difference in style and effect.

Driving through Peterborough today on my way home from phonebanking, I stopped for a coffee at a convenience store. A 15-passenger van of Hillary supporters, with a sign emblazoned "ARKANSAS TRAVELLERS", was parked at the store. Inside, an HRC supporter saw my Obama button and just stared at me like I had three heads and had just dropped in from Mars. I smiled and said hello --- and got no response. I'm sorry, folks, but *you* seem to be the ones from another planet!

To sum up, the HRC campaign is showing some mighty force here in NH, but like Hillary herself, they can be a little tone-deaf to the facts on the ground in our local communities. The Peterborough office has been up, running, and actively engaging the community since way back in the summer of '07. The HRC folks have largely parachuted in at the last second, having done little else to this point other than mailings and TV ads, hoping to win by sheer show of force.

I hope that the good people of my home state of NH have the sense to do what Iowa did, and reject this kind of politics out of hand. It's time to turn the page.

10 things we can do in New Hasmpshire

(please pass on to all those in New Hampshire)

10 THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR BARACK OBAMA IN THE NEXT 48 HOURS:

1.) THE BURMA SHAVE IDEA: CREATE SETS OF SIGNS WITH SHORT PIECES OF A LARGER MESSAGE(for example, sign 1 would say "Your polling place is", sign 2 would say "just within range,please go and",sign 3 would say "Vote for Barack and", sign 4 would say "Bring this country a change!" and sign 5 would be a large Obama '08 sign...you can then get a large number of volunteers to stand 75-100 feet apart from each other leading up to the polling places(making sure the last one is at least 100 feet away from the polling place itself)..this plan can be effective!

pASS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS IN nh.

2.) You can blanket businesses and see if you can put up signs and even pass out small flyers that say: "Don't forget to watch the clock, and Don't forget to vote for Barack!!"

3,) Call all friends and family and co-workers and close neighbors that you know in New Hampshire and encourage them to vote for Barack! Offer to give them rides to the polls!

4.) Now that you have done step 3, encourage these same people to repeat the process with their group of friends, family, co-workers and close neighbors!

5.) See if you can create an Obama chain with as many people as possible and stand with arms outstretched and holding hands with both supporters on either side of you and hold signs for visibility!

6.) Hold a "Honk and Wave" event near busy roads, streets,and intersections and hold up signs and wave for visibility!

7.) Take part in last minute phone banking!

8.) If there is a plan in your area to have Obama pollwatchers in place to see who amongst our supporters have not voted yet, please help with going to homes of voters and place reminder stickers on their doors to Get Out and Vote!

9.) Get on the Internet and blog for Barack!

10.) If you believe in the power of prayer, PRAY for this change to take place!

I am planning to give at least 40 hours of my time to help Barack win Missouri on February 5th, but I am just a member of the working poor and I have work and family commitments and I am unable to come to New Hampshire...so that is why I am writing to you and asking for all of you to fight to bring a second victory into the Obama column! You are now the BARACK STARS OF THE SHOW!! We cannot afford to have another 4 more years of war in Iraq and skyrocketing healthcare costs and bickering in Washington! Let's move out of the Twilight Zone!!

Take care and let's BA-RACK AMERICA!!
Kurt Neumann

Arianna Huffingtons memorable piece on Obama's Win

(Distribute to your contactsx all over New Hampshire)

Obama Wins Iowa: Why Everyone Has a Reason to Celebrate Tonight

Even if your candidate didn't win tonight, you have reason to celebrate. We all do.

Barack Obama's stirring victory in Iowa -- down home, folksy, farm-fed, Midwestern, and 92 percent white Iowa -- says a lot about America, and also about the current mindset of the American voter.

Because tonight voters decided that they didn't want to look back. They wanted to look into the future -- as if a country exhausted by the last seven years wanted to recapture its youth.

Bush's re-election in 2004 was a monument to the power of fear and fear-mongering. Be Very Afraid was Bush/Cheney's Plans A through Z. The only card in the Rove-dealt deck. And it worked. America, its vision distorted by the mushroom clouds conjured by Bush and Cheney, made a collective sprint to the bomb shelters in our minds, our lizard brains responding to fear rather than hope.

And the Clintons -- their Hillary-as-incumbent-strategy sputtering -- followed the Bush blueprint in Iowa and played the fear card again and again and again.

Be afraid of Obama, they warned us. Be afraid of something new, something different. He might meet with our enemies. His middle name is Hussein. He went to a madrassa school. A vote for him would be like rolling the dice, the former president said on Charlie Rose.

And the people of Iowa heard him, and chose to roll the dice.

Obama's win might not have legs. Hope could give way to fear once again. But, for tonight at least, it holds a mirror up to the face of America, and we can look at ourselves with pride. This is the kind of country America was meant to be, even if you are for Clinton or Edwards -- or even Huckabee or Giuliani.

It's the kind of country we've always imagined ourselves being -- even if in the last seven years we fell horribly short: a young country, an optimistic country, a forward-looking country, a country not afraid to take risks or to dream big.

Bill Clinton has privately told friends that if Hillary didn't win, it would be because of the two weeks that followed her shaky performance in the Philadelphia debate.

But it wasn't those two weeks. Indeed, if we were to pinpoint one decisive moment, it would be Bill Clinton on Charlie Rose, arrogant and entitled, dismissive and fear-mongering. And then Bill Clinton giving us a refresher course in '90s-style truth-twisting and obfuscation -- making stuff up about always having been against the war, and about Hillary having always been for every good decision during his presidency and against every bad one, from Ireland to Sarajevo to Rwanda.

So voters in Iowa remembered the past and decided that they didn't want to go back. They wanted to move ahead. Even if that meant rolling the dice.

Again, this moment may not last. But, for tonight, I am going to savor it -- and cross my fingers that it may stand as the day that fear as a winning political tactic died. Killed by an "unlikely" candidate -- as Obama called himself again and again -- who seized the moment, and reminded America of its youth and the optimism it longs to recapture.

Hillary: Compete on the ISSUES, please...

The issues: that is, national issues which affect us all. Not Obama's kindergarten papers; not Obama's rumored transient youthful transgressions; not even what constitutes "experience" (both you and Obama have some. I think he's got more experience and better experience, but)...ISSUES, please.

Otherwise, you're going to keep getting burned by your own stance and your own handlers:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/12/17/navarrette/index.html#cnnSTCText

Please learn the lesson your husband should have learned in the 90s...he never should have answered the "boxers or briefs?" question (it was far beneath the dignity of the office), but he did anyway, unfortunately. A few years later, when asked about goings on it the Oval Office after hours, he should have said "That has no bearing on my job performance", or even "That's between my wife, me, and my God (if any), and is none of your business". Instead, he lied (one of my only disappointments in him). In so doing, he set in motion the idea that it's OK to get sidetracked on topics which have nothing to do with ISSUES. When I hear my president speak, I want to hear "what I need to know", as Obama says, about the ISSUES, not hear something that sounds like it's straight out of US Magazine.

My early thinking about this race...

Back in February of 2007, I was undecided about this race (not that my indecision lasted long, but...!). Watching this video on YouTube tonight sparked a memory:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ1KiP5-YWg

I was undecided and wanted to be open-minded towards Hillary Clinton, but as a voice coach for years, working with high school students on singing, speech, and acting, I literally could not listen to HRC's voice. I know that people from the mid-west tend to have a nasal tone, but hers is extreme. So, in the spirit of openness and helpfulness, I wrote the following email to her campaign, entitled "A Plea for Hillary and Her People from an Independent NH Voter":

~~~~~
I'm not sold on Hillary for president, although my mind is open, at this point.  I am a music teacher and have taught voice and drama for years.
I do, however, have a plea for Hillary and her team:
Please, PLEASE get Hillary some elocution/speech/voice lessons.  Obviously, her debate skills and vocabulary are excellent, but her notoriously nasal production is beyond grating.  When she is speaking in a relaxed manner, it's not too bad, but as she gets more upset about an issue, she pushes her voice more and more through her nose.  It's downright unpleasant to listen to.
Women candidates have enough to work against, given the sexist dinosaurs who like to call them "shrill", without Hillary speaking in an abrasive, yet thoroughly avoidable, manner.  It takes a lot away from her often solid viewpoints.
Until she gets some lessons, please suggest to her that she yawn (or think about yawning, which usually produces a yawn, *drop her jaw*, keep her head tall, think about keeping more space between her back teeth (i.e., again, DROP HER JAW!) and relax her throat.  If she feels the her throat starting to tense up and close down, that is the moment when she will begin to push her speech through her nose.  If she speaks in a manner which keeps this issue in her consciousness, she could kick this bad habit for good.  A little bit of work with a good voice coach would make all the difference.
Sincerely,
An undecided NH voter
~~~~~

I wrote to her campaign in the spirit of helpfulness. I never heard back from her campaign, even with a form letter, saying "your thoughts have been noted".

I did, however, receive appeals for money. Even though I'd gotten divorced, changed my name, and moved three times since Bill was in office (I am Bill Clinton voter twice over), she'd tracked me and has been sending me fundraising letters.

"A Conversation with the American People", my @$$!!! Hillary's perfect; why would she ever need to work on a thing?

There are so many reasons why I am supporting Obama...but his lack of arrogance (particularly after the eight years we've just suffered through) is a biggie. You lost me, Hillary!

A newly-minted voter converts...herself!

A former student of mine, now a senior with an A+ average at one of New England's best prep schools, contacted me via Facebook yesterday. Among other things, she had this to say:

"I was sure Hillary was my candidate until last week, when I went to see her. She was really mechanical and when I thought over her views and policies I found them slightly too conservative for my tastes. So, please do me a favor and talk me into Obama :) "

I sent her a few of his most inspirational speech texts and videos, and made a few arguments around the edges as well. This is one insightful 18-year-old --- one of the smartest young women I've ever had the privilege of teaching. I'm sure she'll come to a solid decision!!!

Her mom is a 100% solid Hillary voter/donor/supporter, whom I'm also proud to call my friend. I don't want to get in the middle of this one, so I think we'll say: "What happens on Facebook stays on Facebook""!

Talking points:  funding, PACs, donations

Those of you who might be canvassing, phone banking, or just talking with your friends and neighbors about Barack might encounter questions about his funding.

Below is the best site I've found on Barack's finances. It shows that 99.5+ per cent of his funds come from individual contributors.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/summary.asp?id=N00009638&cycle=2008

This is not an issue where Barack is particularly different from the other candidates --- but he's had a lot of mud slung at him on this front, and having the facts is crucial.

My response to an NH Insider pro-HRC post

Here's the original post:
http://www.nhinsider.com/mark-hounsell/2007/12/19/hillary-clinton-why-democrats-should-vote-for-her.html

Here's my response (posted a week later):

Hillary, Inc. is not what this country needs now. I voted twice for her husband, and happily. However, while she shares his sense of entitlement and considerable hubris, she has not one shred of his legendary charisma or charm. No ad agency can fix it, either; there are some factors that even a gigantic war chest and a rapid-response advisory team cannot address.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool feminist. I am voting for Barack Obama (who, like his powerhouse attorney wife Michelle, did not come from a life of relative privilege, as Hillary did). Hillary is scripted, poll-driven, and focus-grouped to the teeth. I have no faith that she will consistently stand up for reproductive rights (which is the *tough* end of supporting women's issues --- unlike supporting "mothers and children" issues, which even some Neocons seem to sometimes be able to do).

The fact that she shape-shifts depending on her audience leads me to distrust her to her core (check out her bizarre accent-du-jour in her "I ain't no ways tired" speech; it might lead you to believe she'd actually paid some dues in her life).

By contrast, Barack Obama is the same man, no matter whom he's addressing. Rather than going for the easy photo op with established friends, he acts in courageous ways. A recent example was his speech about better environmental policy and higher CAFE standards to a truly tough crowd: Detroit automakers. As he said of that appearance, "The room was very quiet". Real leadership is not easy.

Last week, Obama told a woman at a Obama Town Hall in Nashua (which I attended) that her children's education isn't just up to the president and the teachers and the states and the schools; it was she, as a mother, who had to urge he kids to get off the couch, turn off the xBox, and hit the books. He tells Americans not what they want to hear, but rather what they need to know in this fast-changing world.

On the "experience" issue, Hillary and Barack have both done wonderful work in the community in their earlier lives. Both have served in the U.S. Senate --- Hillary for longer, it's true. But Obama started as a state senator first, a claim that Hillary cannot make; rather, he worked his way up. Further, the title of First Lady is not an elected office, nor does it come with a security clearance. As a resume-builder, it adds color but no real substance; she was an advisor whose #1 qualification was her marriage certificate. All sizzle, no steak.

Unlike most of his opponents, Obama has taken no money from 527s or PACs. Rather, his money comes from small donors, whose needs and values are all too overlooked in this corporate lobbyist-driven society. Of all of his plans and policies, it is this fact that most clearly urges me to support Obama so staunchly. He is the candidate best equipped to end the broken, lobbyist-driven political culture in Washington. Hillary, in contrast, stands for more business as usual.

As a nation, we cannot afford another moment of Washington "business as usual", or another politician who touts their ability to "play the game" better. Rather, we need a worldly, broad-minded individual who can help us, finally, to transcend the nonsense. That candidate is Barack Obama.

Signed,

Just another 2-time Bill Clinton voter for OBAMA

The Keene Sentinel is off its game...

It's not that surprising that Foster's Daily Democrat would endorse Hillary Clinton; Foster's is famous for being tone-deaf to the true values of the democratic party, at least of late.

But it's hard to believe that the Keene Sentinel has really blown it so profoundly this time. One of the smartest, most progressive cities in the state, Keene is Obama country for sure. But the Sentinel, one of the oldest newspapers in our nation, endorsed Hillary in 2008.

I can't remember if it was Bill Maher or Jon Stewart who, during a monologue, recently called Hillary a "safe robot". The times require something entirely different: an unscripted, brave, broad-minded innovator.

That candidate is Barack Obama.

Accountability in the oval office

The Nashua Telegraph wrote a great editorial recently, supporting its endorsement of Obama. Detailing his meeting recently with their editorial board, they wrote:

"...he thought deeply about the answer to each question we asked him. He spoke neither in safe, pre-scripted talking points nor in divisive polemic. He was able to give nuanced answers to questions without sounding like he was avoiding taking a position."

On the experience issue:

"There's plenty of experience in Washington. What's lacking is inspired leadership that can speak directly to the people over the heads of the partisan politicians and craft a national consensus not seen in decades.

What's lacking is authenticity, transparency and courtesy. What's lacking are leaders who, rather than seeking high ground from which they can dispatch their opponents, will seek common ground and common-sense solutions."

Obama will have a lot of heavy lifting ahead to start to heal the rifts caused by lack of communciation, and sometimes sheer contempt, which congress and the white house have been wallowing in for years. There have been many times during W's administration when I've said "Sheeesh...bring back Reagan; he'd be an improvement over what we've got now. At least he didn't sneer at reporters when they asked him to clarify a policy point. At least he seemed marginally open to suggestions from congress. At least he had Tip O'Neill (the Speaker of the House, a Democrat) over for drinks every now and then...just to be social".

As I heard Obama say in a speech I found on "Barack TV" here on this site yesterday, we don't need a president who knows how to play the Washington game better. We need a president who can help us all transcend the game entirely --- because the "the game" is dysfunctional and serves only the top echelon of special interests.

New Ipswich town captain

I'm informed by the Peterborough HQ that I'm the New Ipswich Obama '08 town Captain. I'm not quite sure what that exactly means...New Ipswich and Greenville seem to be the two toughest towns in the Peterborough district for Obama. Full of Reagan democrats who've continued to vote republican, despite the fact that doing so hits them in the pocketbook in a big way. Also full of people who don't vote at all.

I'm happy to do what I can. But there's only a few known Obama voters in New Ipswich (who are willing to step forward and be counted, anyway) and I think I know all of them --- countable on one hand! Further, opportunities to canvass in New Ipswich see to be limited, or perhaps done for the duration --- at least for now. I'd appreciate hearing from other town/district captains about their thoughts on what should come next.

Obama Town Hall, 12/19/07

Hello fellow educators,

I attended a town hall given by Obama in Nashua, NH last week. It was all wonderful! But here was my favorite part:

A woman with three teenagers asked "Mr. Obama, I'm working very hard on trying to send my kids to college. But if all the good jobs are being sent overseas, what's the point? Why should I bother?"

His answer (I paraphrase): "Yes, we have to change the tax structure so that corporations no longer have an incentive to send jobs overseas. That's a huge problem. But there's something else going on here. The president, the government, and the teachers can't do it alone, either. There's no denying that the kids in India and Indonesia are hungry to learn and to work. That is a fact. So --- get your kids off the couch and away from that X-Box, and get them to hit the books!"

Once again, he's not telling us what we want to hear. He's telling us WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW. That emphasis on personal responsibility is one of the biggest reasons why he's got my vote.

Cheers

Elise in NH

Here is a great hour-long video about the issues. Rather than a debate format, where answers have to be very brief and delivered under pressure, this video lets us see the Senator answer questions about policy in detail and at his leisure.
Fight the disinformation about Barack...with FACTS!!!

Probably because he's surging in the polls now, there are some vicious carpet-bombing emails circulating currently about Obama (my husband Rob received one from a long-departed ex-co-worker just tonight).

The emails center on the hateful, patently ridiculous allegation that Barack is a "radical, ideological Muslim" who is out to destroy the country, and who certainly has no business pursuing the presidency. To those of us who are his supporters, these are laughable allegations, but to those less well-informed who are still undecided, this is serious stuff indeed.

Please, please...if any of you receive this email, or know of a family member or friend who has, please provide them with the attached link, below. Snopes.com has been debunking urban legends for years and years, both on the 'net and off.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

Those of you who are part of other Obama '08 communities, please pass this information on. Thank you so much!

Elise MacDonald

New Ipswich, NH Obama '08 Captain

"A lie can go halfway 'round the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes"

- Mark Twain

Still have yet to end it to Foster's Daily Democrat and Seacoast Online, whose websites were glitchy).

~~~~~
I write in support for Senator Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy.  Almost any Democratic candidate’s stance on religion would represent an improvement over the faith-based blurring of our precious, unique Constitution which we’ve had to endure for the last seven years.  But as a committed agnostic, I was still concerned about Obama’s views on faith in relation to government.
Finally, I found a speech he gave last year on just that topic:
“I think it’s time that we join a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern pluralistic society.  If we’re going to that, then we first need to understand that Americans are a religious people. 90% of us believe in God; 70% affiliate themselves with an organized religion; 38% call themselves committed Christians”.
Very true.  Then he went on to say:
“Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation; at least, not just.  We are also a Jewish, a Muslim, a Buddhist, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of non-believers”.
At this point, my heart leapt.  As an agnostic, I am used to having my views be completely brushed aside by politicians who seem to forget that freedom of religion must also mean freedom FROM religion, for those of us who so choose, in order for it to have any meaning at all.  He continued:
“Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the USA, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?  Would it be James Dobson’s, or Al Sharpton’s?  Which scripture should guide our public policy?  Leviticus, which suggests that slavery is OK, and that eating shellfish is an abomination?  Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith?  Or the Sermon on the Mount, a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our own defense department would survive its application?”.
I see Obama as standing head and shoulders over the rest of the pack, who seem to be falling all over themselves in an unseemly attempt to be “holier than thou”.  It’s all particularly ironic these days, when we see a clear example of what happens when religion and government are allowed to freely intermix:  Saudi Arabia.
Jefferson, and other patriotic Deists in the history of our great nation, have supported a clear wall between church and state.  I feel that Obama would support me when I say “Mr. Jefferson:  build up that wall”.  He has my vote, my donations, my shoe leather in canvassing, and my sincerest thanks.
Canvassing=seed planting not a debate
I was driving around last night, gazing at Christmas lights on neighborhood homes, as it is a long tradition of mine since I was a child. I happened upon a home that I had once canvassed. It was the home of an older woman, that claimed to have been a long time diehard democrat since "before I was born." She was kind, told myself and my partner a brief overview of the history of dem's in NH. She said she liked Barack, but wasn't sure if she could give him her vote yet. Let's just say there is a yard sign in her yard now, as well  as her neighbors who was for Clinton at the time we canvassed. What a sight it was to see. I remember leaving there, saying to myself that I was very glad to have "planted a seed" that day. My partner and I did not challenge her, we did not debate with her. WE LISTENED. We were polite and kind; she noted that all the Obama volunteers were this way and very much unlike the other campaigns. I remember that we left her literature on his experience, because that was what was resonating with her most. She just felt he didn't have enough experience. I guess she thinks differently now.
Just remember, it is only seed planting with smiles. I ask more questions than give answers. I listen with empathic ears and politely and earnestedly thank them for their time. It is literally that simple. If I ask a question, it makes them think. I believe, with my counseling background that there is answers within every one of us. If we ask the right question, we can lead them on their on personal search. If we leave them with literature, it values their time, because they can read it in leisure. I always ask if they want some lit on an issue, never can I leave you with something to read.  I find it puts them on the spot to say yes, take it, and then a conviction to read it because they asked for it.  It is simple and I encourage all of you to get involved and try it out.
"Disappointment doesn't have to be normal."
Ignore the Fame and Fortune: Oprah Knows What She’s Talking About
My husband and I attended the Obama rally in Manchester, NH on December 9, 2007.  The crowd was impressively huge and enthusiastic. Although people were curious to hear what Oprah would say and we all gave her a very warm welcome, the audience was clearly there to cheer for Obama. Spirits were high and Barack didn’t disappoint us. He gave a great speech.
We captured some of the highlights of Obama’s speech on our little digital camera, and my husband used the clips to create a YouTube video for those who might like to see it. (Thanks to Matchbox Twenty for their song "Let's See How Far We've Come." Check out their music video.)
I’ve never watched Oprah and didn’t expect to have anything in common with her. So, I was surprised when I heard Oprah expressing my own thoughts and feelings about the state of our country and the hope offered by Barack Obama.
I believe she was able to articulate the truth of Obama’s campaign: it’s all about empowerment. The only way we are going to be able to turn things around in our country is if every citizen feels empowered to contribute to the positive changes we want to see. We have to know our voices will be heard by our government, our concerns about the environment and the war in Iraq will be taken seriously, and our needs for good schools and medical care will be met. We have to feel like we matter and are able to make a difference.
As Oprah so aptly expressed, "Apathy is believing that disappointment is normal. What Barack Obama has taught me is that disappointment doesn't have to be normal.
Rep. Beth Arsenault (Laconia) Endorses Obama
The following letter appeared in the Concord Monitor (December 12. 2007)
Uniquely Qualified
More than at any other time in history, the choice we make in this year's election is crucial. It will decide what kind of a country and what kind of a future we bequeath to our children and our grandchildren.
I have watched our country become divided and distracted by the issues that separate us. We all struggle with questions concerning the war, our economy, civil rights, reproductive freedom and global climate change, trying to come to a moral position that we can live with and which sometimes puts us at odds with our neighbors.
Barack Obama is uniquely qualified to deal with these issues. He understands that the place to start is not where we are divided, but where we can all agree.
Obama's biography uniquely qualifies him to bridge the gap in our partisan divide. From his Midwestern-born mother and his African-born father, his early years in Indonesia and high school years in Hawaii, his Ivy League education, coupled with his community organizing in the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago, he straddles the line between races, cultures and socio-economic positions with a poise and a grace that transcends the differences that define us all. Barack Obama is the man to lead us past our differences into a more hopeful future.
Rep. BETH ARSENAULT
Laconia
A Writer’s Case for Change—Elissa Paquette's Story
Seeing the World Through Different Eyes—Gaby Grossman’s Story
As a high school student, Gaby Grossman of Exeter spent part of her summers studying French at the Concordia Language  Village.  This total immersion language experience included a day of cultural awareness, and Gaby spent a simulated day in the life of a French-speaking African.  This experience, coupled with the years she spent living overseas as one of three daughters to a career Marine Corps officer, helped ignite an interest in the lives of people in other countries.
“I am fascinated by the different ways in which people lead their lives across the world,” she said, “and the ways in which we are still essentially similar, despite our cultural differences.”
Gaby became a World Geography teacher, dedicating herself to helping her students look beyond the boundaries of their upbringing and see the world with a fresh perspective.  At her first teaching job in Plymouth,  MA, she worked with a diverse mix of students from all economic and ethnic backgrounds.  As a result, she relied upon creative teaching methods to reach her kids.
“I think a cultural focus helps broaden their familiarity with the world and their own place in it,” she said.
After five years in Plymouth, Gaby and her husband Dan moved to Exeter, and she gave birth to her son Eli.  Through the New Hampshire Early Intervention program, they discovered that Eli was born with autism.  Seeking out services and treatments for Eli made Gaby more familiar with the state’s public health system, and her experiences prompted her to get involved with the presidential primary.
“Everything changed when we had Eli,” she recalls. “I want him to have the same opportunities I had, and I know that the outcome of this election will have a major impact.”
Gaby supports Barack Obama because she is inspired by his ability to see the world through the eyes of others.
“Barack’s ability to empathize is at the heart of his leadership skills,” she said. “He can better negotiate with others, inspire greater political participation, and listen to people in the formation of his policies.”
She feels empowered by her work with the campaign, and had the opportunity to have dinner with Barack himself several months ago in Nashua.  As an educator, she is comforted by Barack’s emphasis on expanded early education, a major plank of his recent speech on education.
“I have seen how children born in disadvantaged situations often have a limited sense of their own possibilities,” she said, “and after listening to Barack, I know that he sees that as well.  He knows that we need to reach these children early.”
Life as Education--Frank Catano's Story
As a sophomore in high school, Goffstown town captain Frank Catano took a field trip to a Boston orphanage. After a day spent caring for the children there, Frank found his calling in life.
Frank went on to run a children’s home of his own in Manchester, the Webster House, for 26 years.
He recalls:
It made the words in my textbook real… You can read about a homeless child having trouble trusting adults, but when you spend a day with a child and you can see that fear and mistrust in the way they have trouble making eye contact, the human impact of social problems becomes clear.
Today, Frank is a psychology professor at SNHU.  By placing emphasis on practical learning, he provides his students with the same kind of formative experiences he had.
Frank encourages his students to take internships primarily with human services agencies and organizations.  He believes the internships help his students evaluate whether they have the personal commitment to work in a field that requires considerable human contact while often offering little pay or recognition.
“I try to make sure that my students have the chance to find themselves in their careers,” he says. “When you’re working in public service, you need to be committed to working in that field.”
Frank is a leader in our grassroots movement for change in New Hampshire because he values Barack’s commitment to government transparency.  He believes that democracy dies behind closed doors and has been looking for a leader who is willing to listen to dissenting views and deliberate in the public eye.
Reading The Audacity of Hope helped Frank make his decision.  He said:
The tenor of the book was not “I’m a leader, I know better.”  It was about dialogue and listening.  That is what democracy is about.  My sense is that he is genuine in his commitment to open government.
SENATOR OBAMA IS COMING TO MY SCHOOL
Yes, folks, caps lock and all.
Really, I should have signed in to write this entry a couple days ago when Staffer Matt sent me a very excited IM to tell me the news. But while he and my other awesome staffer pals have been working hard to change America one voter contact at a time, I've been working hard to change it one potential-filled high school student at a time.
Of course, since BARACK OBAMA IS COMING TO MY SCHOOL (yes, it needed caps lock again), their politico world and my teaching world are about to collide. Big time.
And I couldn't be happier about it.
Sure, it's probably going to make me miss being a staffer myself- I always will- and I think my parents would rather I start the drive down to Keene (the old hometown... it's in southern NH) for Thanksgiving break a few hours earlier than I'm going to... But I look at nearly everything in terms of how it effects my students, and having a presidential candidate coming to speak at their school- a candidate who will actually speak to them, who will address the issues they care about (and they do care)- is a tremendous experience.
So one more time... BARACK OBAMA IS COMING TO MY SCHOOL!!!! If you're in the area, come out! Kennett High- 4:30- Tuesday!
Sharing Her Passion for Learning—Svea Dellea-Messner’s Story
Svea, front-row middle, in blue.
For as long as she can remember, Svea Dellea-Messner has loved language.  Although English Education is her first love and chosen major at SNHU, there was a time when Chemistry was her favorite class, thanks entirely to her teacher, Mr. Hillner.  Energized by a teacher who knew how to motivate his students, this science-averse native of Windham, NH came to class each day ready to learn.
“He just had a real passion for the subject and truly cared about whether we were learning from the class.  It made me want to do well,” she said.
Svea is studying to become a teacher because she wants to inspire others with the same infectious energy Mr. Hillner brought to his subject.  The SNHU junior believes that the most important goal for educators should be to make their students excited about learning.
“If you can make a student feel excited about learning, it stays with them for the rest of their lives,” she said.
She plans on becoming a middle school teacher because she believes those are the critical grade years for nurturing a love of learning in students.
Svea’s path to becoming an educator won’t be easy.  When she graduates, she will be shouldering over $20,000 in debt, a sizeable burden for a low-paying profession.  But the specter of debt won’t deter her from becoming an educator, and she is looking forward to a semester of student teaching next year to get some firsthand experience.
She is supporting Barack Obama and volunteering for a campaign for the first time because she believes that he can unify the country around an agenda that will help level the educational playing field for all Americans.  Svea first heard Barack speak at the SNHU commencement ceremony in May, and she had the opportunity to meet him at a morning roundtable discussion on improving transparency in government  in Manchester in early September.
“He’s a genuine, sincere person who really cares about people,” she said. “The fact that he’s a real person gives me confidence that he’ll be someone who can change the way politics is done in Washington."
Teachers Who Made a Difference, Continued
On Friday, at a speech in Manning, SC, Barack said, "The promise of a good education makes it possible for every child to transcend the barriers of race and class and background and achieve their God-given potential."
He added, “"That's my story. That's what the American story is supposed to be about."
The leaders of our grassroots movement here in New Hampshire share this belief, and this week, after announcement our New Hampshire Educators for Obama group, we asked some of them to share stories about important teachers or educational experiences from their past.
Larry, a ward captain in Keene, described his college years as transformational ones.  He points to a course in Philosophy as having the greatest impact on his life:
It challenged me to think in new ways as I tried to wrap my mind around new concepts.  It has a continuing impact on my ability to think, my values, and my views on religion.  So now as a result I am a much more thoughtful, cynical, skeptical, challenging, progressive atheist with the ‘audacity of hope.’
Patty, a Hampton town captain, says her high school French teacher pushed her to learn a language she had little interest in actually learning.  She said:
Madame Roberts actually convinced me that I could speak French.  She knew that I hated French class.  She had to know that I couldn't really speak French.  But she somehow convinced me that I could….  I think this was her modus operandi.  She convinced all of us that we were capable.  And her philosophy became a self-fulfilling prophecy.  And it worked.  Merci, Madame Roberts.
But Patty was quick to add lately a new teacher has claimed the mantle of her favorite teacher of all time.  She said:
That would be my daughter who just began a teaching career this fall!
She inspires me because even though this twenty-three year old lives in a world where many peers are making career decisions based on their pocketbooks, she chose "important work."
As a math major with a master's degree, she could have found a significantly higher paying job in the business world.  Instead, she's serving as a 'cool' role model to impressionable middle school students at a critical time in their lives.  She's in the enviable position of helping adolescents make the kinds of academic and personal decisions which will impact the direction their lives will take.  Very cool.
Education Stories from our Grassroots Leaders: Teachers Who Made a Difference
Most of us can point to that one teacher who made a difference in our lives.  Since we recognized our New Hampshire Educators for Obama group this week, I asked a few of our grassroots leaders to share stories of the teachers that have had a major impact on their lives.
Barbara Miles, a ward captain in Manchester, is a former community organizer and a lifelong activist.  She named three teachers that have left an impact upon her life that continues to this day:
Sister Mary Lucille taught me during first and second grade teacher and is a life-long friend. She taught me, at a very early age, to always try to learn new things about myself and to that self, be true.
At Sylvan  Hills High   School, Mr. Robert Taylor taught me to sing and read music. He used television commercials of the late 1960’s to teach us about harmony.  Music is a constant part of my life thanks to Mr. Taylor, and to this day, I sing harmony to the Morton salt commercial as I purchase locally produced kosher salt for my kitchen.
It was my good fortune to be in the same place and time as John Balaban, poet and professor at Penn  State University.  John translated the poetry of Vietnamese during the war.  He walked through fields in Viet Nam with a tape recorder, asking people to recite their favorite poems and songs.  His books and lectures were filled with the words of a people who found the ability to transcend the reality of war by recalling the beauty of their land and the love of their families.  I learned that culture and tradition can sustain people during the darkest of times.
Goffstown town captain Frank Catano, a professor at SNHU, credits his college history professor, Francis Mason, for teaching him to focus seriously on his studies.  “Professor Mason demanded a level of performance that required me to be organized and dedicated to keep pace,” he says.
He added, “I think good teachers push their students a little bit outside of their comfort zone, and Professor Mason did that for me.”
Homeschoolers for Obama
I have homeschooled my three children for the past 10 years and, as a representative for the New Hampshire Homeschooling Coalition (www.nhhomeschooling.org), I have offered support to many other homeschoolers.
I know I am not the only one seeking a presidential candidate who speaks for progressive homeschoolers. We may not be the largest constituency in the country, but we exist and our numbers are growing. Many of our children are reaching voting age (my oldest child will vote in the 2008 election), and we need someone who will speak for us.
I trust in Barack Obama’s intelligence and open-mindedness and am confident he will consider homeschooling as a reasonable educational alternative. He has already indicated that his educational policies would not discourage homeschooling. On page 344 of The Audacity of Hope, he writes: “none of these policies need discourage families from deciding to keep a parent at home…For some families, that may mean doing without certain material comforts. For others it may mean home schooling….Whatever the case may be, such decisions should be honored.” As a husband and father of two young children, Barack Obama understands “the extraordinary emotional and financial contributions – the sacrifices and just plain hard work – of the stay-at-home mom.”
New York native Marion Noble spent the summers of her childhood on Chase Island in Lake Winnipesaukee.  While there, she forged a close friendship with Don Winchester, whose family owned the only home on Farm  Island.  The two lost touch once Marion entered her teenage years.
Decades later, after a chance encounter near the place where they first met, they reunited and found the companionship they had longed for in each other.
Even after their storybook reunion, however, challenges remain.  Although they’re getting by, they remain members of the squeezed middle class in New   Hampshire.  Nevertheless, they have managed to hold onto their share of the American Dream.
In 1990, Marion left behind her job in order to pursue the teaching career she had always wanted.  For over a decade in New   York, she denied this dream and had worked instead as a translator, while unhappy in her marriage to a man who did not share her deep desire for children.
Marion’s move to Tuftonboro enabled her to turn the page and follow her heart’s desire.  She took a job as a substitute French teacher in Wolfeboro, and her rekindled friendship with Don turned into romance.  Don understood the pain of delaying one’s dream, as he had also married someone uninterested in starting a family.
Marion received a graduate degree in Education from the University of New Hampshire and became a high school French and Spanish teacher.  Marion and Don welcomed their daughter, Marion Anne, into the world in 2000.  They bought a home together in Antrim and built a life centered on their long-awaited family.
Politics is a big part of their new life together.  Marion is a founder and Vice-Chair of the Antrim Democratic Committee and a strong supporter of Barack Obama.  She finds Barack’s message of hope and unity inspiring and “Kennedy-esque.”
“I’ve been able to get a second start on life here in New  Hampshire,” Marion said. “Barack can give those of us who had given up on politics as too divided and dirty a second beginning towards building a politics that uplifts us all.”
Geared up and Ready 2 Go!
Here it is, primary time is approaching and we need to help our candidate get the edge.  What better way than to Gear up and be Ready 2 Go.  (Slight alteration of the Rally chant Fired up, Ready to go! that my fiancee just happened to blurt out. I caught the phrase mid air and was inspired to write and challenge all of you).  Gearing up with Obama 08 Gear helps advertise and endorse Our Candidate and also helps finance his election.  So I challenge everyone who reads this to buy at least on item from the Obama store.
OR
You could do as our Peterborough Group for Obama and pitch in and buy in bulk to hand out for free when canvassing.  What a wonderful way to help fuel the fire of numbers of voters for Obama.
Geared Up and Ready 2 Go!
Preserving a Child’s Potential—Bruce Mallory’s Story
Bruce’s rejection of this inequality inspired him to enter public service.  After a career as an educator, community organizer and advocate for children, Bruce believes that early education is critical to ensure that every child reaches his or her potential.
Bruce is a member of our New Hampshire Child Advocacy Task Force, and he is convinced that Barack will work harder for economic justice than any other candidate because of his experiences as a community organizer.
“As someone who has worked as a community organizer myself,” Bruce said, “I know how much that experience informs your values for the rest of your life.”
Read More>>
A Life Devoted to Children—Paula Ferenc’s Story
Nine years ago, Paula Ferenc was fed up with the services provided to her daughter by the local school system.  Paula believed that her daughter, as a child with learning disabilities, was too low a priority for the school board.  She decided to get off of the side lines and become a change agent. She ran for and won a seat on the Rumney school board, where she remains to this day.
Paula recognizes a fellow change agent in Barack, and this has drawn her into joining the campaign as a member of our New Hampshire Child Advocacy Task Force.
Read More>>
MAKING STRIDES WALK AGAINST BREAST CANCER
A group of Barack Obama supporters marched in the "Making Strides Walk" Against Breast Cancer on Sunday, October 14th, 2007.  The walk was 3.5 miles, and a large group turned out to Make Strides Against Breast Cancer.
We wore Barack Obama buttons and t-shirts as we walked, to quietly promote extra visibility for Barack Obama in the area before, during, and after the Making Strides Walk.
The Walk took place in Peterborough, NH on a lovely fall morning!  The weather was perfect and the colors were incredible.
This campaign is certainly about more than politics--it's about community service in Barack's name as well.
A walk AGAINST cancer...a walk FOR Barack...Making Strides.
Best regards,
Marion
A Different Kind of Walk
Canvassing: A blessing
I have never learned so much in one day.  I have never felt so much positive energy as I did talking with people at their doors in one day.
Let me tell all of you, when we, a staffer and myself, knocked on doors in Wilton New Hampshire town we found that most were undecided.  However, let me tell you that every single person was thankful that we came and talked.  They were pleased that we listened.  Each door brought new perspective to respectful pleasant conversations about "politics"; you know the subject everyone is told to avoid because it will cause arguements.
I also met this one supporter of Obama that left me in awe for the day.  She was so articulate on so many issues. She spoke from her heart with strong intellectual comments and concerns.
We found only one HRC leaner, and she said that it wasn't much more than a leaning.  All in all, forget the polls...just get out there and talk to people, talk to your coworkers, relatives in New Hampshire and you, as I did, will see that this election is Obama's to win.  I am enjoying being a part of this campaign.
CLINTON MEDIA CONTROL
This morning, a Senator from NY was on The Exchange, the live show broadcast on NHPR in Concord, NH.
I called in before the show started, waited for a while, and then spoke to a screener.  I told her I had a question I wished to ask concerning the Iraq war.  The screener told me that no, that subject would not be discussed on air.
I told the screener I had another question I'd like to ask--one about Iran.  The screener told me that no, that subject would not be discussed on the program.
I said well, I would then like to ask about any tax plan for the middle class, as school taxes and property taxes in NH are a serious issue in NH, and the screener haltingly asked me, "Which tax plan of hers?" I said, "Any plan she might have and could discuss."  I was told that the tax issue had already been discussed on the show (this was two minutes into the program).  I explained that she had just discussed Estate Taxes, not middle class tax reductions, and I was told that my question would not be taken on air.
I tried to ask a last question--this about the Senator's background, going from a college Republican to a current Democrat.  I was told this was not going to be a topic of discussion on the program this morning, and the screener said she had loads of calls waiting, and hung up on me.
Later, my husband called in, finally got through, was screened, and was told that HIS question was unacceptable for the air, would not be a topic of discussion--his question was about the secrecy of the Bush Administration.  He wanted to ask her opionion regarding this, and whether an Administration run by Clinton would be any more open, for currently the Clinton campaign seemed not to be very open but seemed extremely controlled.
My question:  Will she only go on call-in talk shows if all calls are targeted in advance, predictable, and only ones that she wants to answer?
I am saddened by NHPR's willingness to allow a candidate to appear, but apparently under her own terms and conditions--everything nicely controlled, THE MEDIA NEATLY CONTROLLED.
Bill and Hillary have certainly learned a great deal from Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and the Bush Administration. The Clinton MEDIA MACHINE continues to press on...or rather, shouldn't that be continues to SUPPRESS on?
I believe I know how someone living without freedom of speech, without true freedom of the press, feels at having a voice, yet one that is not allowed to be heard.
Sadly,
Marion
time to get serious
I just watched the new Obama television ad which is soon going to be airing in New Hampshire and I hope around the country.   It is an excellent piece that sets the tone for what will come next.  In spite of advice and pressure even to go negative Obama continues to focus on what unites and not divides.  Speaks forcefully but not belligerently the truth and the need for action.   I have been watching the logistics of how this campaign is unfolding  from Iowa South Carolina and Nevada and of course here in the first in the nation state New Hampshire.  But because of the immense outpouring of support financial and volunteer this campaign is also national in scope.  The day after we are lucky enough to have Obama here in little New Hampshire I am sure he will do a stunning appearance in New York City.    I like that he has made this campaign national and is in this till the convention.   What he brings to the campaign is what we are going to see on stage in Hanover this Wednesday.     Obama and his campaign are waging a smart well organized consistent campaign.   With each passing week his real practical experience shows through.       I have never been one to place too much on endorsements  but what I find interesting and reassuring is the variety and real life experiences of the endorsements Obama is getting with each passing week.   His campaign is truly a United campaign of all Americans... and I am proud to have my name there with the others.   See you on Wednesday up in Hanover I hope....or may we meet someplace else along this campaign.
dedication and hope
another weekend trying to balance what energy and time and commitment have on the plate for what is coming up.   Spending a lot of time reading others blogs and comments.  Sifting through to the message and I come up with two things    people have dedicated their all to this campaign and it is because they are taking back hope and moving it forward in action.
I needed a break from stacking wood and yard work so I would come in and download another issue position paper to read and contemplate.  Or I would see what was being posted on the blogs from around the country...it is all about strategy and who has momentum or who is faltering and who might replace whom on a campaign.   Then I think of the people each with their personal story of why they came to this campaign.  How we want to connect with others   the strategy is no more complicated than that.... pick the issue or issues that resonate for you  and read what Obama has said and how he says it again and again.  Listen to him say it on you tube clips and then take that with you when you talk or write to friends.  We all know this is the struggle for the undecideds and as yet uncommitted    When I feel tired or as if there is just too much to do ... I go back to the issues    and I feel the new need to unite dedication to this movement and hope to bring it in to action.
Inspired by Lives Overseas—Gerald Knight’s Story
As a boy in 1943, Laconia’s Gerald Knight watched his parents pack old winter clothes into a box.  The clothes were then shipped to a Dutch family who were suffering under the fuel ban imposed by the occupying Nazis.  The van den Bergs, who received Gerald’s old coat, replied with a thank-you letter soon after the war ended.  This incident awakened Gerald to the lives of people overseas, and filled him with a sense of wonder.
That return letter not only initiated a lifelong friendship between the two families, it also ignited Gerald’s passion for world culture and geography which still enchants him today.
Gerald holds a photo of meeting the van der Bergs after corresponding for a lifetime.
President Harry Truman’s tough and pragmatic leadership, which led to the reconstruction of Holland and other parts of the world, inspires Gerald to this day.
Gerald sees many of the same qualities in Barack Obama that he admired in Harry Truman.  He’s turning his inspiration into action by volunteering as a From Doubt to Hope book club leader.
The daydream fascination with world culture of Gerald’s youth cemented into a career teaching geography to high school students.  For nearly three decades, Gerald taught students at Laconia High School, helping his students to see the world from the perspective of other people across the globe.
“Whenever possible, I tried to describe places overseas in terms my students could understand,” he recalled, “So they’d learn that Belknap County was approximately the same size as Hong Kong but had less than one-hundredth as large of a population.”
Revelations like these produced a response in some students similar to the one he felt when that thank-you letter first arrived at his childhood home.  Passing on his sense of wonder kept Gerald motivated throughout his career.
Frequent travel gave Gerald more experiences to draw upon in teaching his students.  He has visited Russia and other parts of the old Soviet Union nearly forty times alone.  As he traversed the globe, his admiration for the qualities demonstrated by Truman in rebuilding the world order after World War II only grew.
The father of two sees Truman’s toughness and decisiveness in Barack, as well as an international perspective that Gerald values highly.  Because of his work leading a book club in the Lakes region, Gerald was invited to meet Barack at a Nashua Pride baseball game in August.  Their conversation, he said, reinforced his view that Barack is a true leader.
As his six decades-old friendship with the van den Bergs proves, people from different backgrounds can come together to look out for each other.  Gerald believes that Barack is a leader who knows and values how much we rise and fall with each other’s successes, both in this country and in the world.
these united states of americans
as emails fly through cyber space and phone calls connect people we all have this common goal    to make sure the nation knows how enthusiastic our support is for Obama.  This week up in Hanover it will all come together as we gather.   It will not just be Obama supporters.  All of the candidates I guess will be there to make a showing.    As I think about it, the potential could exist as much for negativity amongst the groups as positive feelings we bring the intensity of our feelings for our candidate of choice.    We need to make sure that the country and media see the joy and smiles that come from our commitment as well as the enthusiasm chanting and sign waving.   Those of us from the Upper Valley will have no issue standing with others where ever they come from or whom ever they support
I got an email earlier this evening that threatened to quote SunTuz master of the art or war. I was thinking more along the lines of Lao Tze
        "The Valley spirit never dies......
         ...It is there within us all the while;
         Draw upon it as you will, it never runs dry"
or to quote another of my favorite philosophers of more recent vintage.
"We need a President who can challenge conventional thinking in Washington, fight for the people's interests, and bring Americans together to meet the challenges of our time."
That is what we will be there for the world to witness and from which we build a movement together into the future weeks and months.
An Educator for Obama: There is no second choice!
I am a new educator, fresh out of graduate school that is passionate for Obama.  I am not a new person to politics, nor am I as young as one would think.  I am 33 years old and I am voting for Obama with all my passion...and here is why.  He listens, he is compassionate, he has lead a life of service.  I find his life's pursuit of serving others, working in the grassroots, and his character to mediate, negotiate an amazing way to live one's life.  I believe in Barack.  I believe in his ability to lead us to a new way of American Politics where politics is a dirty word covered in lies and scandal.  I have even a hard time saying lies and scandal because they are negative words, and when I think of Barack, I think of only positive attributes.  I am a true to the core meaning of a New Hampshire Independent.  I find Barack the best candidate, the only candidate for President of the US...because he is a uniting force to be reckoned with.  He can unite people because he has the EXPIERENCE to unite people.  He has the empathic ears to listen, he has an honest tongue that speaks from an honest heart.  He can and will lead America in repairing America's image around the world through using his empathic ears and his honest tongue.  He will restore the American Dream, he will work for fairness for all, for equality for all.
I have worked in retail since high school graduation.  I have many thousands of dollars of college debt, I worked fulltime to put myself through college, studying and working simultaneously.  I have lived without healthcare up until this job for the past 8 years.  I worked more than 50 hours a week at times without healthcare, and I believe in Barack to help end this type of living for Americans.  It is not an experience I wish upon anyone, even though I learned much and did it.  I want a better America for the future and therefore I put my vote, my voice, and my heart behind Barack Obama.
I close with a personal anecdote...I was polled over the phone the other night to see who I would vote for in the Democratic race.  I answered Obama before he could finish.  The man asked, and who would be your second choice...I said Obama of course.  He gently reminded me that I couldn't have a second choice and first choice the same with a little laughter in his voice.  I next said to him, "there is no second choice."
Barack in Peterborough
Having seen Barack 4 times now in person, I am very much disappointed that I will not be able to see him when he is in Peterborough.  Let me tell you, seeing him in person will leave you feeling so inspired, so filled with hope for a country that will be run by an honest government.  He leaves you feeling refreshed that someone actually listens to your questions.  I dare you to try it out...go see Obama in Peterborough THIS COMING WEDNESDAY...see the sight events for details...and let your heart, your mind be lifted and inspired.  I dare you to ask hard questions, and bring along one friend that is undecided...he will make a believer out of them.  Watch him honestly answer, and actually answer questions.  You will see him pause, and then answer in reflection.  You will see a man that is not afraid of being a man that cares, that listens, and understands that the country needs new leadership.  Leadership that listens, respects the citizens, and desires to continue his passionate pursuit to serve America the Beautiful.  This man, is a man that is creating "love affairs" all over this country with him, because he is genuine, he listens, is willing to cross aisles of politics, and willing to make mends for the bullying of other countries created by past government officials.  I challenge everyone that reads this to bring one undecided friend to Peterborough to meet the NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE US>>>Barack Obama.
intra group affinity building
I had thought to take the night off from my newly acquired blog habit.  I had driven down from my school to Peterborough to meet with an Educators for Obama group forming there.   Good chance to share what has worked for us in the Upper Valley and as a member also of Educators for Obama I am eager to see that group take on momentum also.   As always the staff people impressed me with their commitment and more so with their passion for the cause we are all working towards.   It is so inspiring and to hear the perspectives and enjoy the comraderie of these new friends... people jotting down notes to forward to the policy people...  always those staff people taking notes to pass on up the line.  Seeing proof of those note taking sessions with each new clarification and fine tuning of position papers being revised and refined and reflecting the combined strength of our shared perspectives.      The long ride home after a typical day in school had almost taken it out of me....we have guests tonight visitng from Maine.  And I was no sooner in the door when their questions and enthusiasm for what I was telling them about what we are doing in NH made me want to sit down and write it out.   and then the connections just made it all the more real,  relevant  Maine, NH, State staffers, volunteers, Educators, north country, southern tier and we were all on the same wave of enthusiasm eager to hear and learn from one another.   As Barack has said so many times  we are not just winning an election we are changing a country together.
a week to build forward
It is great to see the unleashing of energy and enthusiasm as we now have our focus on next week's DNC debate in Hanover.   It has been great fun listening reading and talking with my new Obama friends circle as they poured positive energy into wanting to be there, and be the defining moment in candidate supporter visibility..... also looking forward to meeting all the new people who are joining us daily becoming part of the Upper Valley for Obama family.   We have seen such wonderful growth of this group and we have only upwards to continue on towards the primary convention and general election.
I hope everyone remembers to sign on to these events and understands how important it is to for us to be prepared for the numbers that will show up.
I had hoped when we first beganplanning for this event that I would be able to get one of those coveted tickets for inside...but now I know I will be most happy to be outside with my colleagues and new friends.  Showing our enthusiasm and not quietly politely and passively listening in our seats.  But standing together in one another's company.   I think I like the action and noise better     see you there   both at the get together prep at the new headquarters the night before and then on the green   the night of the debate
student activism ala 2007-08
As a former "student activist" of vintage age, now a teacher, I have been interested and yes a bit concerned about what many think of as the lack of similar political motivation in the young people of this generation.    I think it is a damaging stereotype in many ways.   I do not believe students in college or high school are apathetic or unconcerned as a total group.     I do believe they are overwhelmed at what they see going on all around them in the world today.  That sense of what could I possibly do disempowers them often from taking action.  In my school I am offering an "internship" program for academic credit which calls for combineing experience in grassroots politicking   from canvassing and phone banking to attending events and working on a campaign for the candidate of their choosing.  They will also be required to research and write about other campaings issues candidates and the whole nomination process keeping a journal of reflections on their experiences as they go through it.     To get into the program they have to hand in an analytical paper on the three most important issues of concern to them and why that has motivated them to choose the candidate they intend to work for this semester.
The most important objective I have is not to just get students working in a campaign and learning the incredible feeling that comes with doing something you are really committed to and invested in the outcome....  I want them to once again hope    hope that they can make a differance   hope that the world that they dream of is a world they can work towards   hope that they can find others of similar concerns to connect with and participate in doing the hard but rewarding work of democracy   sound like someone we know???
If anyone out there has more ideas they would like to suggest and share about pulling young people in to this campaign,  I am eager to begin the dialogue.
The League of Conservation Voters (a non-profit, non-partisan group) is an idependent voice for the environment.  The League advocates for sound environmental policies and maintains a "scorecard" by which it ranks each member of Congress based upon his or her environmental voting record.
In checking the latest "scorecard" ratings available online (for the 109th, 2nd session), BARACK OBAMA was rated 100% by the League of Conservation Voters.
(Hillary Clinton was only rated 71%. )
If you care about the environment, it's another good reason to vote for Barack Obama.
He cares 100%.
goose quill pen
I am one of those people born before the internet gene had entered the gene pool.  I have tried over time and with vast amounts of patience and effort from friends to master this new frontier.    I used to tell my classes I felt the world had been going down hill since they stopped using the goose quill pen....and I meant it.      But one of the many exciting things being part of this campaign to put Barack Obama in the White House has been to discover the joy of communicating and connecting with all types of people from all over the state and country,  with incredibly varied interests and to learn what has brought them to this campaign like me ,  what motivates them still and what they can do next to continue.   I have finally achieved blogdom  is that a word?  Do not laugh you cyber types  do you realize what an accomplishment and incentive this is to old fashioned campaigners such as myself.  No more file cards or sheets of constantly shifting notes and memos.  No more phone tag and messages piled up and unresponded to for days    YOu may take it for granted  but I have always felt the dual need of needing to know more and needing to connect with those who were working as I was but feeling the distance between us.   I encourage everyone to take up this new form of campaigning anything that connects us in our common goal has to be explored and nutured and embraced.      Now how about some more bumper stickers buttons and tshirts to go with it
Grassroots involvement in politics has always been important to the
people of NH.  We are proud of our "First in the Nation" status.
We  follow issues, we meet candidates, and we take the decisions
we make on election days with great care.
All politics is local, Tip O'Neill once said.  Real change often comes
from the bottom-up--from you, from me, from our neighbors--
when we work together to solve problems and move forward.
Grassroots politics can be a formidable way to create change.
Barack Obama understands that it's going to take everyone--every
citizen--working together in this process for change.  This is one of
many reasons why I support Barack Obama for President.
Last week, the Barack Obama campaign opened a new office
in Peterborough, NH.  The Obama campaign is not just talking the
talk--it is walking the walk.  The new Obama office in Peterborough
is indicative of Barack Obama's commitment to grassroots politics in our
community, and affords everyone who desires to learn more about Barack
Obama and to work for change the opportunity to do so in our
community--we are important, we count.  The Obama campaign is working
hard for change all over our country via grassroots politics, creating
change one vote at a time.
Please visit the new Obama campaign office when you are
in Peterborough.  The office is located at 43 Grove Street.
You can also call the office at 924-0808.
Marion
Why poll results in critical states are not as important as in previous years
Why poll results in critical states are not as important as in previous years. Obama is attracting thousands of new supporters in these states that are not showing up in polls. A lot of these supporters are newly registered or have never voted, so pollsters do not have their phone numbers to call to ask poll questions. Many of these that Obama have attracted to politics are young people with cell phones who’ll not be called by pollsters. It’s interesting that in straw polls, for example one straw poll at a fair in Iowa, Obama came out on top. The key is, we must continue to sign up people for Obama, get them registered, and get them out to vote in Jan-Feb. If this means picking them up, finding baby sitters for them etc; we must get them out to vote.. It will be tough getting the young people out to vote in the primaries. They have let down past campaigns who relied on them, but we can change this. We must strategies on how to get EACH person we enroll in the Obama dream, out to vote! Iowa, NH, South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida are critical. Let’s individually make a difference. We all know people in one or more of these states. Think on how you can individually be a campaign manager for Obama, marshaling forces to get him nominated as the Democratic candidate. Hold those who support him close so you can get them out to vote on that crucial day. My favorite mantra is: ‘If it’s going to be, it’s up to me!
