Change for our schools must come from us!

Our schools here in NV are in terrible shape and something must be done. Many parents don't seem to grasp the urgeny of the situations we find ourselves in right now. Our schools already rank in the bottom of the nation when it comes to funding, graduation rates, and test scores. Yet we rank high on all the things none of us should be proud of like drop out rates and teen pregnancy. We can do better for our kids and now is the time to stop sitting around and allowing our children to continue to be short changed. Our kids deserve the best education possible. Yet the state of Nevada has decided that educating our kids is not important. I'm looking for those parents who want to do something about the state of education in the state. On Sunday Feb 8th I'm holding a house meeting to organize parents to get involved in schools and start working to make our schools better. Come out and support our kids and the education initiatives facing our state. Let's put our brains together and figure a way to improve our schools. Each and every parent has a part to play and we need parents to get involved in our cause. In addition to our Adopt a Teacher initiative we are starting an email campaign to get our legislators to make education a priority in the state of Nevada. On Feb 8th join us in writing email to legislators to tell them to make education a priority. Our children need us to fight for them to improve education.

Many of you have heard the news regarding the budget cuts to Clark County School District. It is time for parents to stop standing by while education is cut yet again. If you are a parent with a student in the Clark County school district you need to act. You need to get involved. Our kids are counting on us to speak up for them. Contact your legislator and demand that they make education funding a priority. As parents we can no longer stand by and do nothing.

What is our role as parents for the failures of education in NV

Recently there was a news article which attempted to lay blame for NV education crisis on the feets of parents. As a concerned parent with two kids in the Clark County School District I was angered at the thought. But as I read I have to tell you some question came to mind. The article titled "Parents share blame for education woes". The authored asked many question which I feel we need to asking ourselves and those around us. How many parent are actually involved in our children's education? How many of us knows the names of our children's teacher? How many of us attend open houses? How many of us attend PTA meetings and actively participate? How many of us ensure the TV, video games, and radios are off and homework is done? Recently I was speaking to a parent and she was complaining about her kids having to take the proficiency exam. She explained that she didn't feel it was fair that her kids had to take a test on math that they didn't learn in school. That is the attitude of many parents and yet we have to ask why is there such low expectations for our students. Why is the test so hard for so many of our students and yet others are able to pass. Our students are not being prepared at home and sometimes in the schools. The fact that some are passing is an indication that some students are being taught what is on the test. Many parents are not ensuring that there students are taking math beyond algebra in school. So when it comes time to take the test the student is lost. I explained to that parent that if she knew the test contained algebra then it was her responsibility to ensure that her student was receiving help in algebra. She should have been monitoring her grades and when the student began to struggle she should have gotten her tutoring. The school district provides tutoring help for students and yet many parents don't utilize it. Many of our teachers are in the classrooms before school and stay late after school to tutor our kids. I get angry when I hear people complain about our teachers. They do a great job with limited resources and little thanks. They receive little if any support from many parents. The failures of our schools does to a degree lay on our feet and until we all step up and help our schools they are going to continue to fail.

Everyday our schools are struggling with limited resources. On Feb 8th I'm launching a Adopt a Teacher program to start helping to ensure that our teachers have the resources they need to be effective in the classroom. Any PTA for any school they can all use more help. Take time to go into the classroom and help. They can all use volunteers. Any investment in education whether by time or money is never wasted. This is the future of our state we are talking about!

On Feb 8th, 2009 I'm holding a community meeting to get parents, and the community more involved in the issues facing education. My house meeting is my attempt to get others to join me in Adopting our Teachers. We are all aware of what challenges our teachers and our schools face. Please join me in doing our part to show our teachers that we care about education here in Nevada. I'm attempting to purchase gift cards to be distributed to area teachers to be able to purchase the much needed school supplies. Many of you know about the budget cuts the school district is facing and the results of those are going to affect all our children. A dollar spent today on education is a dollar saved down the road by educating our young people. Looking to adopt some teachers

Many of us have watched and heard the news regarding the budget cuts of the Clark County School District. I have decided I am tired of waiting for Washington and Carson City to do something about the state of my children's school. I want to do more than just complain about how bad the schools are. I have decided to not accept poor performance of my children's school just because the Politicians have decided that education is not a priority to them. Well the education my children receives is a priority to me and I want to do my part to make my children's school better. I am starting up a Adopt a Teacher program which I hope that I can find other parents willing to donate to my cause. Everyday our teachers go into classrooms with limited supplies to provide to our students. They make the best of what they have in spite of being limited. I want to do my part to let those teachers know I appreciate and support the job they do for my children and all the other children here in Clark County. Please join me in Adopting a Teacher. Anyone can help by donating gift cards to be distributed to the teachers to purchase much needed school supplies. I'm looking for those in the community who value education and know how important it is for our children to have the best education possible. It seems the less educated among us are in charge of education

Each and every day I become more and more disgusted by the Governor's plan to cut more money from our schools. As if our schools, teachers, and students aren't already being asked to do more with the less that they have. Taking any more money from education is asking them to do more with NOTHING! It angers me that so many of our elected officials are so quick to put education on the chopping block. They tell us it's to balance the budget well my response is I'd rather have have a budget not balanced rather than short change my kids out of an education. Hell if we'd spend more money educating our kids they will become tax paying citizens instead of welfare receipients or jail inmates. Now thats where the unbalanced budget is coming from. Too much money being taken out to support individuals not putting money in. And yet we can't see that an investment now is going to pay off in the future. Why isn't educating our kids a bigger priority to our politicians and more importantly why isn't it a bigger priority us as parents. If the Governor doesn't want to support educating our kids then why are we supporting him. Maybe it's time we got a Governor who is interested in making our children's education a priority! Parents we must get involved in letting the School District, the State, and our Schools know that our children's education does matter to us. I was recently speaking to someone regarding our schools and I had some questions as to what it actually takes to fund one school for an entire year. Can any one tell me who I could contact to get this information?

Each of us must be the Change

President elect Obama is about to be sworn in as the next President of the United States of America. For many of us who voted for Obama we are overjoyed to see that this day is upon us. Especially those of us within the black community, although his presidency is not merely about him being a black man. For us in the black community it is a proud moment to be shared with every American regardless of race. Over the last few weeks I have had numerous conversations with many different types of Americans from all different races, background, income level, and educational level. They all have so much enthusiasm for President elect Obama and what change he will bring to this country. Many of us know that the problems we will face will require more than four or even eight years to fix. But we know that we must be on the right path for us to see progress. The people have spoken and decided that we want the direction of our future to be President elect Obama's vision. The vision he spoke of during the campaign. I know that I didn't go into the voting booth looking for quick fixes to our nations problems. My vote was for the voice who believed in the same sense of responsibility and obligation to leave my children a better future than that which is being given to them today. When I speak to people about what Obama's Presidency will be I am quick to remind those who are looking to him to solve the problems we face in this country that our country's problems were not created by one man or one administration. The success of his Presidency rests on the shoulders of all of us who voted for him and his vision for our country. I am always quick to ask others what is there role in making his presidency successful? The education of our children must be a focus in this administration as the problems we face today will probably not be completely corrected in our lifetime. But we can change the direction of this country and prepare each generation that is too come to be prepared for the challenges to be faced. I am often amazed at how little importance is placed on educating our children. Why do we not educate our children to be good citizens and not just good standardized test takers. Why are our children allowed to graduate from high school within being prepared for life. Why are our kids not taught about money management in math? Energy conservation in science? Function of our government in Social Studies? Maintaining a healthly lifestyle in physical education? Now that I have addressed what our kids are not learning let's look at why they should be. Americans spend more save less and are living beyond their means. The result of this fiscal irresponsibility is the mortgage, credit, and lending crisis. The next generation needs to be able to budget, manage money, and maintain credit. Global warming is affecting all of us and yet we don't teach our kids about the importance of alternative energy. The next generation needs to be taught to conserve water, energy, and waste. We need to educate our children not just on wars fought hundreds of years ago but they need to be educated on issues facing us now. Healthcare is a major issues right now for many Americans. Why are we not doing more to educate our kids on what poor eating choices and not being physically fit will impact their lives in the future. To anyone reading this ask yourself what I am doing to improve education in my community? Are you involved in PTA? Are you coaching youth sports? Are you mentoring young people? Our most precious resource is our children and we must sacrifice in order to prepare them to lead. Please lend your voice to making education important in your community. It's not about getting hand outs from Washington anymore. Our children need each and every one of us to sacrifice to ensure that education is made a priority in our communities.

Nevada's education getting short end of stick

With the constant news of the bail outs of wall streets, automakers, airlines, etc. I have to ask the question that should be on the minds of every parent in this country. WHO is going to BAIL OUT our KIDS? I understand the politics of why the financial system and US automakers need to be protected. But who is going to stand up and say enough is enough and sound the alarm for the lack of protection of our educational system in this country. Is the fate of our country not a direct result of the young people who are today not being educated in schools across this country. Doesn't public education deserve to be saved the same way we are writing blank checks to corporate america. What good does saying wall street do when we aren't preparing the next generation of young people to be able to do math at a level that would allow for them to become stockbrokers, financial advisors, and accountants. With the level at which our students perform on standardized test in math I'm not sure I want my money in the stock market. Where is the big balloon payment falling out of the sky for education in this country. So much is being said about these companies not being able to failed because of the impact on the entire nation. Why is the failure of our school system, which is going to be the driving force behind any and all advancements in science, health, and the enviroment viewed as dispensable. When I look at education I see the generation that is going to cure disease, stop the destruction of our enviroment, create wealth as bankers, educate the generation behind them as teachers and parents themselves. I'm disgusted with the amount of money being thrown at these industries to ensure they don't fail. I want that same security blanket for education in this country to ensure it doesn't fail. I want education funding to become a priority in this administration and I believe that we will have a President who knows the value of education but each of us must do our part to ensure that education is not allowed to fail. The failure of our education system means we are letting our children fail. With Jan 20th around the corner I think each of us needs to take a moment to contact our Representatives to let them know if education is not made a priority by them by both their funding of education but also by their votes to not allow education to be cut they will feel our wrath when it comes to these Representatives being re-elected. Please contact your Representatives and let them know we have had enough of Nevada Politicians not spending money to educate our kids.

The Change we seek begins with each of us

Recently I was having a conversation with an older family member in which they stated that before the election they viewed our generation as lazy, not caring about our future, and being uneducated when it came to politics. They expressed how impressed they were with the young people and how we organized and got involved to elect the first African American President of the United States of America. This family member spoke of how before the election they often worried that our generation lacked leaders and any sense of direction. And yet the victory of President elect Obama was in such large part to all the young people from all across this country, of all races, religion, education, and financial background making the statement that we wanted a change in the direction of this country and it's leadership. This family member explained that in prior generations the movements were lead by individuals but that our generation is a more team oriented. They spoke of the election being less about individual leaders creating the movement but that what they witnessed was more like a wave of people from all across this country standing up together to say we have had enough. In the past we may have seemed to be uninterested in the direction in which the country was going and yet it was on our backs that the debts were stacked up, wars were fought, and we began to realize what was at stake for us. I am proud to be a part of this generation and I look forward to doing my part to ensure that my children's generation is given to them better than I found it. We saw past the divisions which held back progress in our parents to see Dr King's dream become a reality. On Nov 2008 it was our generation that decided that it is not about the color of a person's skin but rather the content of their character. When President Obama takes office in January we all must do all that we can to ensure he is successful by getting to work in our own communities to change the directions of our schools, children, economy, and our enviroment. Thank you to every person who voted and now I ask that we now organize in those same numbers that lined the polls in November to now take our country in the direction which this country desperately needs.

Presidential Inaugural Parade to Include Peace Corps and AmeriCorps Alumni
Commitment to Community Service Highlighted by Parade Participants, National Day of Service

WASHINGTON - Today, in keeping with its commitment to hold inaugural events that celebrate our common values and reflect our nation's history of community service, President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden's Inaugural Committee officially extended an offer to the Peace Corps Community and AmeriCorps Alums to march in the 56th Inaugural Parade. Members of these service organizations will join representatives from across the country and our Armed Forces in the historic parade down Pennsylvania Avenue following President-elect Obama's swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol.

"These organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service," said President-elect Obama. "Vice President-elect Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade."

On Monday, January 19th, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the President-elect and Vice President-elect and their families will join Americans across the nation as they participate in activities dedicated to serving others in their communities. In 1994, Congress passed legislation designating the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a national day of community service, and the Presidential Inaugural Committee will be working to encourage participation in service projects nationwide to honor the legacy of Dr. King..

Organizations wishing to participate in the parade submitted an application to the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee (AFIC), which then assisted the Presidential Inaugural Committee in reviewing all of the groups' applications. All told, 1,382 organizations applied to participate, setting a new standard for interest in marching in the parade.

The Peace Corps Community will include members who served with the corps in the 1960s to the present. Marchers will carry the flags of the countries that Peace Corps have served over the years. AmeriCorps Alums will include some of the millions of alumni of national service in this country since John F. Kennedy's call to service and the conception of VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) in 1961.

In addition to these groups, a number of other parade participants also participate in active community service programs. For instance, the Boy Scouts of America Troop 358 from Philadelphia has been serving members of their community for over 55 years, the Jesse White Tumbling Team from Illinois was founded in 1959 to create "hope" for troubled youth, and the Warren County Sheriff's Office Prevention Partnership from Kentucky raises and distributes money to community groups and programs that help kids stay away from drugs and violence.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee was assisted in its selection process by a group of experienced military musicians, who utilized their expertise to help assess the presentation skills of marching bands, musical acts and drill teams.

All participants in the Inaugural Parade are responsible for paying for their own lodging and transportation to and from Washington, D.C. The Committee has been working closely with area governments and civic organizations to facilitate access to affordable accommodations and would like to encourage citizens from across the country to reach out and help the Peace Corps Community and AmeriCorps Alums raise the necessary resources to participate in this historic event.

I'm No "Joe" the Plumber but....

Well let’s get to it. Let me begin by stating that I am no Joe the Plumber, not even close.

I am a retired educator from a battleground state (Ohio), which has suffered yet another plant closing, living in a state now where 40% of homes are in foreclosure. I support Senator Barack Obama because he is the real deal.

I just heard a Republican surrogate criticize Barack Obama saying that he was not qualified to be president because he did not travel to Afghanistan.

Now let me tell you, I spent most of my career working and counseling in the inner city of Cleveland Ohio. From my perspective, until John McCain travels to Hough, Glenville, Cleveland’s near west side and comparable areas of other American cities, he is not qualified!

This is where the real “Joe” the plumbers, waitresses, sales people, hospital workers, cleaning people, bus drivers, and other “Joes” and “Jaynes” live. I know because my father was a waiter (now they are called servers) and my mother was a secretary working for the Defense Supply Center Region Cleveland (Fed. Govt.) and I was raised in Glenville.

I might not have grown up in Sarah Palin’s “patriotic part” of America but I assure you that my parents were patriotic and loved America as do the millions of folks that still live in inner cities around the country.

When Cindy McCain challenged Barack Obama to walk in her shoes, I thought, I challenge you to walk in my shoes or the shoes of any of the ordinary Americans your party now claims to represent. I have seen Senator Barack Obama walk in the shoes of ordinary Americans during the primary season. He began his career in the South Side of Chicago.

It’s one thing to say you put America first. Barack Obama has shown that he puts Americans first.

Generation "X", "Y" & "Z" We Need You

OK, Folks we have 35 days left. Everyone tells us that there is a generation gap in this election as well as a racial divide. I realize that there are some people in my age group who may not be able to accept an African American President. OK, I get that. I will be 63 years old October 1st. What frightens me more is what would happen if John McCain is allowed to direct what happens to my pension. Someone who loves these seniors needs to explain to them that if John McCain had had his way their social security benefits would have disappeared in this stock market disaster. Appologies to all my fellow Boomers on this list, my appeal is for the rest of you. Please, please, please talk to your parents, your grandparents, your aunts, your uncles, your godparents. Explain to them the difference between the two candidates on Social Security and Windfall Elimination. These are issues that effect them directly. Roe v Wade, not so much.

Barack's Mid Day Snack

Yesterday evening Barack Obama made another visit to Las Vegas, and me and the girls waited for him through scorching temperatures, desert rain, and insane crowds to get close to the man we consider to be the most important leader of our time, arguably any time.

And of course, like Barack does, he just eases through the mayhem in the super cool way that only he can pull off.

And just like that…I mean just like that, Obama saw my baby girl, looked adoringly at her. He admired her curls, touched a ringlet, and then reached his hands into her bag of popcorn and shared a magical moment with her.

I hope she cherishes this picture for the rest of her life. This man is already President in my eyes. We just have to GET OUT THE VOTE for the rest of America. Yes We Can!

In response to a request to post to a womens anti-Palin blog, I will take a moment to share my energy. To counteract Palin being enshrined in sainthood, and since they insist on straight LYING about Obama and most other campaign issues, I unashamedly have a negative opinion of this person particularly as both a woman of little integrity and moral fiber, as well as a politician. This woman has actually set women back 100 years by allowing herself to clearly be PROSTITUTED! ...just used and hung out in all her inexperienced naked splendor, to be made a pandering mockery of for all the world to see! She is now living proof that women are STILL being used as pawns of convenience to men, at the hands of the power elites highest levels, and paraded around like ILLICIT SEX OBJECTS!* She may as well be a call girl to the GOP and get it over with. MSNBC tried a bold experiment this year by putting two politically incendiary hosts, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, in the anchor chair to lead the cable news channel’s coverage of the election.

That experiment appears to be over.

After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage.

The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.

“The most disappointing shift is to see the partisan attitude move from prime time into what’s supposed to be straight news programming,” said Davidson Goldin, formerly the editorial director of MSNBC and a co-founder of the reputation management firm DolceGoldin.

As far as the entrepreneur, he is maximizing on the hottest topic in America.Could he have done it positively? yes, but the "marketplace" is filled with good things about B.O. It's only natural that he'd go the opposite direction and along the way, get free media coverage, great for advertising, Apparently he also gets an emotional/psychological boost, by putting out there his opposing stream to the tsunami of support for our next Presisdent. So he is making money from his frustration. It's the capitalist tool.

However, his statement that his lawyer assured him that he is within his First Ammendment rights is not that cut and dried.

As some of you may know I am an anthropologist with 40 years of training and empirical research and still doing it daily,it's my life,not my job. As such I always turn cultural oppression on its ear, gauging the response helps one to learn how irrational racism and prejudice is..ok breathe in ..What would happen if someone printed a T-shirt that said "Jews the First Slaves of Germany?" Oh boy..For those of you who have never visited the Holocaust Museum in New York, or Los Angeles, you might not entirely understand the question in the context of history..all of those black sambo caricatures, popularized in America..were similarly depicted towards Jews. I have read, Elie Weisel's "Night" "Kristallnach" and the horrible suffering of other survivors of the Concentration camps. Every racist epithet can be lodged against ANY cultural group. The pain is the same , we are all humans.

In my interviews, I have heard the most ridiculous, twisted, absurd reasons as to why one "clan" hates another. However I must note strongly, I still respect their opinions and beliefs.

Oppression and xenophobia, twists the mind and causes mental health problems. So let him sell his T-shirts, because we know, that Obama ,a Constitutional lawyer would defend his right to do so.

Those of us who subscribe to Diversity4Obama have received an e-mail warning that "Muslims will take over in America by filling 1st local political roles (Think Gov. Jindal in Louisiana) the regional then National (Think Obama the Next President), and that Islam has a plan to take over Rome.

The subtext is the unrelenting lie that Mr. Obama is a Muslim. It comes from the uneducated opinions of a group that write chronicles under the banner of "HUMAN EVENTS."

Well if that is true we better hurry and donate as much to this campaign, and get that voter registration drive going,and canvass those sitting on the fence so we can get Barack Obama in office, a Christian man, to stop those "naughty Muslims" from taking over the Vatican (Rome) and punishing those nasty little devils, who vow celebacy a Priests, and have been doing naughty things with young pubescent altar boys entrusted to their Spiritual care.!

I think one of the most critical things any of us can do right now is to reach the Reluctant Voters, individuals who might be willing to vote for Barack Obama; but for what ever reason they are hesitant or reluctant to vote for him.

Outside of commercials, visibility is one of the most effective things we can do, and it is certainly the most inexpensive. Doing Visibility allows our message to reach thousands of people every hour, who we would never normally reach.

Message to the Media-African Americans are 10% of the Population

When is someone going to stand up and protest this insistence that President Barack Obama is winning in southern states because of the overwhelming African American vote. Again last night some uniformed so called pundit stated "why are we making such a big deal out of North Carolina", he was expected to win because of the African American vote! Excuse me, the African American population of North Carolina is 21%. As far as I know African Americans are not the majority in any state! Isn't this the same type of language that got former President Clinton in trouble by trying to marginalize President Obama's cadency in South Carolina? What about the comments Senator Clinton made after the win in Louisiana? We are one of the most faithful demographic in the Democratic party, however, President Barack Obama would not be winning these contests unless white voters were voting for him as well. He has made it clear that he is not running as a Black candidate. Remember the speech, 2004. Why don't we just count votes. Why do we have to endlessly slice and dice the electorate into these meaningless groups. I don't remember all this divisive coverage in any previous elections. Maybe it's not the electorate that's not ready for an African American president, maybe it's you. So who will be the first network who takes the high ground and only count votes in the next contest and more importantly in the general? By the way, what was the percentage of African American voters who voted for President Barack Obama in Iowa? Idaho?

It’s amazing to me when critiques like yours, whether you are left or right, zero in on the extreme of a text. . Reverend Wright comes from a long line of patriots that question and even condemn the United States for its past and present behavior. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and a multitude of civil right stalwarts were killed because of this. The reverend is not alone in his condemnation. White ministers have uttered similar phrases. And yes, so did Jesus Christ, albeit under more dire circumstances.

The sad thing about it is that well meaning people get caught up in this media frenzy with little self-analysis. Yes there is an admittance of guilt, but to be judged so harshly? Heaven forbid. Should America be judged so harshly. Hell yes. We’ve been responsible for the unnecessary death of millions around the world.

Has America progressed? Let’s measure it by how many death threats not only Reverend Wright, but Reverend Moss III, his successor, have and continue to receive. Let’s measure it by how many death threats Obama has received since we are measuring the extremes.

People label his speech as divisive. This country is already divided. If the energy expended condemning Reverend Wright were used to condemn the lunatic fringe on the right, and the not so lunatic racist who continue to discriminate in every phase of black people’s lives, this could eventually become a better country.

First off, hello. It's been a while since I've written. With all that has been happening surrounding our beloved candidate, I just had to make a few points. First of all, the man is unimpeachable - 'they' can't find anything better on this guy besides than the words from his pastor - ANOTHER PERSON?? This is a weak attack at best, that I feel has completely lost it's legs since the infamous More Perfect Union speech on that historic day of March 18, 2008. Now he is being called 'TEFLON' because nothing seems to stick! lol. He has actually gone up in the polls! These are the types of things that bring me to my point; Barack Obama is a transcendent figure in that he is light years beyond any singular issue. In his case, it is not about specific points of policy, and what unrealizeable perks he will dole out as president. No - as strong as these positions may be, that's not it at all so if that is what you are looking for, you are totally missing the point. No, this man represents the totality of a comprehensive set of positively superlative qualities; more than just another presidential candidate. Indeed, we are meeting a man's man. When we support and vote for Barack Obama, we are casting a vote for honesty, integrity, strong character, moral authority, a kind heart, and a loving friend. We are saying 'YES' to all that is good within us. A vote for him is a vote for OURSELVES, in that he understands that the governance of our country is not an elitist affair. No sir, this man is prepared to hand us back our rightful place in this American Democracy, that we MAY usher in a more perfect union!

Shame on Pat Buchannan and all Fear Mongers

Listening to Pat Buchannan and his guest I would like to point out a few things. According to the latest Department of Justice statistics, 67.7% of all crime is committed by whites and 28% by Blacks. When one takes a closer look and breaks down the statistics down to types of crimes such as forcible rape (65.3% by whites), assault (63.3% by whites) and weapons carrying (57% by whites) we find that in fact White criminals commit more of the crimes that might actually prompt someone to cross the street. Furthermore, considering the rate of recidivism and the notoriously poor representation afforded many Black offenders, most of the crimes committed by African Americans are more likely committed by the same repeat offenders. The actual percentage of the Black community who are criminals is in fact very, very small. Mr. Buchannan’s insinuation that Whites should fear Black people they see on the street is the sort of racial divisiveness we don’t need in this country.

No one is saying that all "rich people" of any color are bad people or that all the people "in charge" are bad people. However, you have to admit, that most of the people in positions of power are white, in this country, politically as well as in the corporate world. This is the strength of Barack's message and his campaign, bringing all people, rich and poor, every ethnicity, every sexual orientation, every political stripe together to bring about change. One of the changes that hopefully will come about one day is that those in control in this country will reflect our diverse population. In congress, for example, there are folks who have championed minority concerns and rights,great, we appreciate it. Why can't minority representatives champion the rights and concerns of their own groups as well as those of the majority? Can they do worse than those of the past? They might just do better for everyone, not just their own group. Think about it.

I promised myself that I would not be again distracted by negative actions or comments of others, however, I couldn't help it. To those of you who commented that Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his church and his sermons are racist, did you listen to the sermons dispassionately in their entirety? Did you only hear the excerpts presented as they were by the media deliberately to incite? Have you been to the church for yourself? Have you at least gone to the website and actually read the mission statement and the history of the church? Although Reverend Wright's comments may have made some people uncomfortable, I am sorry but he spoke the truth. We do live in an America which is divided. This is one of the reasons Barack is running, to try to bring us all together. As far as Wright's statement (this is a paraphrase) about America being run by "rich white people," is that not true? Wasn't this one of the things John Edwards campaign was about, eradicating the inequities between the haves and have nots? Much as we would like it to not be true, are not most of the "haves" white? We have come a long way but we still have a ways to go. I believe that Senator Barack Obama is the only candidate who can bring us together and solve the problems our country faces. Because of his background (multicultural) he sees things from all sides. Because of his age (not as old as Rev Wright and his white counterparts who might be too racist to embrace any person of color as President of the United States) he is not bitter about our country's past treatment of some of its citizens. Because of his brilliance, he will come up with real solutions that will work. Because of his skill in negotiation he will be able to enlist folks from both sides of the aisle to pass the needed legislation to solve the problems. Because of his character he will inspire our nation to live up to its promise and restore our respect in the world.

Notion of a "Dream Team" is a Real Nightmare

Hold it! Stop that incessant droning about a "so called" Dream Team featuring my ideal candidate: Barack Obama, and that other candidate who can't say enough bad things about him, and seems to be a victim of multiple personality disorder.

That's what I want to scream every single time I hear some political pundit or television personality speculate about pairing up these two contenders. In my view, and using the vernacular, "It ain't gonna happen."

For one, They've got it all wrong. He's not running for VP. Let's get that straight. There are many changes that he couldn't possibly affect in that number two slot. He is running on a platform to repair the many wrongs done to our government. That's the reason many of us support him so vehemently. To relegate him to the also-ran negates that liklihood of getting the job done. We want our change NOW, not later.

Secondly, we--HIS supporters--would never allow that to happen. We support him wholeheartedly. Many of us don't plan to vote on a ticket where he's not in the top slot, plain and simple. That's just all there is to it. Besides, our guy is winning! lol Even if this issue does have to go before the superdelegates, his case is far more compelling.

Thirdly, to align himself with that particular candidate, whose methods and morals seem so converse to his own would sort of invalidate his candidacy. He has run a race high in integrity. I just can't say that for her. The nasty campaign and snide insinuations made by her, her campaing staffers, and her surrogates are a part of that old way of doing things. Out with the old! In with Obama!

Finally, it would just be wrong. I actually want to convulse, imagining her as his VP or anywhere on his cabinet.

Now, let's just let this idea evaporate and let's be done with it. This is one baby that should indeed be thrown out with the bath water! Let's geterdone!

Hillary Clinton had the distinct ability to intimidate Sen. Barack Obama. During their early debates, she would lock her eyes on him each time he talked, making him visibly uncomfortable and seemingly incapable of even making eye contact. She swatted away most every effort he made to draw a contrast. Of the many measures of how Obama has evolved as a candidate, few were as apparent as his demeanor during the debate last week in Cleveland. The cower is gone. Now Obama looks Clinton directly in the eye, with an air of confidence and no sign of fear. When the campaign began, Clinton's campaign seemed like so many bogeymen. Her national polling numbers seemed insurmountable. Her likely fundraising totals seemed unapproachable. Her mastery of policy made others wilt. Brick by brick, though, Obama not only caught up but surged past her in every way of keeping score that counts going into Tuesday's vital primaries in Texas and Ohio. He has more money (including a staggering amount north of $50 million collected in February alone), more momentum (a 10-state winning streak), more votes and more convention delegates. He also is outpacing her in persuading party officials called Superdelegates to switch teams, which means he also is leading the league in steals. But it is the more ethereal part of his candidacy, his growing confidence, that is most obvious on the public stage. In debates, he has ready counter points. On the stump, he is nimble and can respond quickly and with bite. For his doubters, he offers up smackdowns on Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, that might foreshadow the tenor of a fall campaign. Obama's campaign apparatus has been sturdy too. Almost no major campaign soldiers on with no turmoil, no public infighting, no firings of one-time key aides. And while Obama's campaign no doubt has had its fights and its share of marginalized, once-powerful figures, it has managed to do that within the four corners of the campaign and not on the front pages of newspapers. Contrast that with the turmoil of the Clinton campaign, where recriminations find their way in front page stories in the Wall Street Journal and the Sunday edition of the New York Times. That is one reason so many people believe the experience of running a successful national campaign is as good an indicator of capacity to serve as president as an extensive resume. To be sure, there have been mistakes. Michelle Obama's comments that she has only recently found pride in her country is destined for a future attack ad. But that might be the lone misstep in her first dance on the national stage. And something tells us that it won't be quite as repeated as Hillary Clinton's comments about not baking cookies back in 1992. Michelle Obama's overwhelming performance has been positive as she has emerged as an animating force in her husband's campaign. It's even hard to find a photo of the Obamas' young daughters sleeping during a campaign event. Obama's gentlemanly bearing used to make people think that he couldn't take a punch, let alone deliver one. The Clinton campaign consistently has said, wait, oh just wait until the Republicans get a hold of the little lamb of a candidate that Obama would be. The attacks instead seem to make him stronger, or at a minimum energize his supporters, who continue to turn out in historic numbers and open their wallets for him at record rates. There is no precise moment when this should have been apparent to us, but one does stand out. When the Des Moines Register published its poll in the days before the Iowa caucus that showed Obama with a 9-point lead over Clinton, few believed it. The Register's brilliant pollster, Ann Selzer, was skewered by the Clinton campaign for blowing it. Clinton advisers sent out a point by point rebuttal of a mere opinion poll. Turns out that was only the first sign of panic. The panic generated more attacks, and when those didn't seem to work, the Clinton campaign unloaded more attacks that were harsher and more directly personal. It was as though with each escalation, the Clinton campaign team was certain that it would make Obama crack and lash out. But the louder his opponent, the calmer Obama gets. Clinton shoots him daggers. He returns with near bemusement that stops just short of mocking. Obama could still lose, but not because Clinton stared him down.

Face it, this is not going to happen based on our best wishes and good intentions only! The road to Hades is paved with good intentions.

I have been spending my day today phoning voters in Ohio and Texas the day before those two big primaries. It is important for us supporters to still attempt to reach those folks, and try to gently sway their opinion in favor of Sen. Obama. You can easily make 20 calls in 20-25 minutes or less.

The 2008 Clark County Democratic Convention will be held on Saturday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, 3645 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, NV 89109.

We NEED ALL OBAMA SUPPORTERS TO ATTEND. Nevada has a three tier caucus and therefore the delegates Senator Obama won can be lost, if we do not have enough delegates to keep them at the County Convention. Please attend as a delegate, alternate, or guest and wear your Obama gear. NO STICKERS WILL BE ALLOWED AT THE CONVENTION.

A total of 7,240 Delegates were allocated at the Precinct Caucuses on January 19. Our first priority is to fill every one of those positions, including those for Precincts which did not elect Delegates. We also welcome Democrats who want to attend as Alternates or Guests, so the final number of participants could exceed 8,000.

If you were elected as a Delegate, you should have received a post card similar to one you can view or download here. Please save your post card – it has your Precinct number printed on it, and you will need your Precinct number for registration. If you did not receive a post card, don't worry about it -- if you think you were elected as a Delegate, you can register and we will sort it out.

If you were NOT elected as a Delegate, AND you attended your Precinct Caucus, you can register as an Alternate – even if you did not sign up as an Alternate at your Caucus. If you did not attend your Caucus, you are most welcome to attend the Convention by registering as a Guest.

WASHINGTON - A prominent civil rights leader has told the Democratic National Committee that refusing to seat delegates from Florida and Michigan would disenfranchise both states' minority communities.

In a Feb. 8 letter to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, NAACP chairman Julian Bond expressed "great concern at the prospect that million of voters in Michigan and Florida could ultimately have their votes completely discounted." Refusing to seat the states' delegations could remind voters of the "sordid history of racially discriminatory primaries," he said.

The DNC penalized Michigan and Florida for moving their primaries to earlier dates in violation of party rules. Both states were stripped of their delegates, and the party's presidential candidates signed a pledge not to campaign in either state. Florida lost all 210 delegates, including its superdelegates; Michigan, 156.

My Email to Senator John Edwards

I just undertook Lance King's challenge (offered here at the MYBO website) to email Sen. John Edwards, encouraging him to endorse Sen. Obama. What follows is the contents of my email:

Senator Edwards:

You ran a critical and valiant race for the White House. You raised the level of awareness and focus on poverty. Not only did the focus that you raised become an integral issue in this Presidential campaign, but the issue has now been planted firmly on the national table for resolution. Your race and your commitment were integral to that result.

Now, there is another issue where your involvement is key. You have the ability to break this deadlock of the two remaining candidates. Whomever receives your support and endorsement will likely go on to win the majority of the remaining state primaries and caucuses.

I entreat you to shift your support to Sen. Barack Obama. And though you may not agree with him 100% on each and every issue (nor do I), his nomination makes the most sense for our country.

Surely, you are aware of the trends that the media incessantly drones on about. His numbers, in spite of an initial significant lead by Sen. Clinton, have overtaken her on many fronts. In the polls, he is the candidate who most signifies a change for the future. He is the most galvanizing candidate remaining in the race. He is decidedly the most inspirational candidate running. His message and delivery inspire so many of us, and has been so long overdue after these years of the "Bush Reign." And most importantly, he poses the best shot at defeating a Republican opponent and regaining the White House for a Democratic Presidency. Isn't that what is the most important?

I am not a constituent of your state, nor have I ever written you before. I hope, however, that my individual voice chimes in and resounds with millions of others in encouraging you to endorse and perhaps even campaign for Senator Obama. It is the smart and benevolent thing to do, to salvage the party. To permit this nomination to go to the superdelegates will destroy the democratic party, just at a time when we are poised to regain the White House.

Please support Senator Obama swiftly, enthusiastically, and passionately. If you do this thing that would serve to unite the party, in historical perspective, you will be remembered favorably. What a legacy!

Please do the right thing, and do it now. The time has come.

We should encourage those Obama supporters within each of our precincts who are not delegates to consider registering as alternates. If any of the delegates who have indicated that Sen. Obama is their preference are unable to attend the convention for any reason, and if we do not have enough favorable alternates, we may find those slots filled by HRC supporters. That would be a sad state of affairs.

Let's do all we can to ensure that there are an abundance of Obama alternates.

Why I am Angry with Howard Dean, of the DNC!

Dear Obama Supporter,

A few days ago, I was both shocked and dismayed during Chris Matthews' interview (on "Hardball" on MSNBC) of Chairman Howard Dean of the DNC, by Chairman Dean's response to a question.

Matthews asked Chairman Dean if the Democratic Party would allow the rules to be changed, and allow the delegates from the sanctioned states of Florida and Michigan to be seated, as Sen. Clinton has been promising in all her stump speeches. Chairman Dean's response was that it wasn't up to him, and that the decision would be entrusted to the Credentials Cmte., which would be elected by other delegates at the convention.

Wait a second. Is anyone else angry besides me?!?

My position is that the rule was established, and all the Democratic candidates agreed to and signed off on it, including Sen. Clinton. She, however, did not remove her name from the ticket in those states. Because she wants it both ways and wants to change the rules in the middle of the game, now she is asserting that she will see to it that those delegates are seated.

This is exactly the kind of waffling and back-room dealing that many voters really dislike. It is one of the primary reasons that compelled me to throw my support to Sen. Obama.

If you, like me, abhor this type of political gamesmanship, take a few moments to share your thoughts with DNC Chairman Gov. Howard Dean. My Personal Email Campaign

Because nothing beats a failure but a try, I have been waging my own email campaign for many months. Now, as we approach "Super Tuesday," I have targeted those states involved. I divided my email address books into state groups, and have been personalizing each mass email. It may amount to nothing. However, if one person that receives it is more inclined to vote for Sen. Obama and get involved in the campaign, then it was indeed worth the effort. Here's my email, using New York as an example:

Family and friends:

To those of you who are in New York, I am passing on this information regarding the Obama campaign, in case you'd like to get involved. Your state is a critical February 5th state, and we are looking for good things out of you!

After the 2004 election, we should realize that it will take more than just our singular vote to get our candidate elected. It will take a little sacrifice.

Obviously, I am a supporter of Senator Obama, and have been active as a volunteer. Bill Clinton campaigns for Hillary in South Carolina

Hillary Clinton's campaign deployed President Bill Clinton in South Carolina for the specific purpose of delivering the black vote, aiming to remind African-Americans of the good times when Clinton was president. Which raises the question: Why do so many people think the Clinton years were good times for black America?

A hopeful African-American electorate was at the core of Bill Clinton's successful bids for the presidency. In many ways, the scandal-marred, deeply partisan years of the Clinton administration proved disappointing in the face of such early optimism. Welfare reform, the growth of black imprisonment, and the public abandonment of progressive African-Americans like Lani Guinier are some of the most memorable racial disappointments of those years. Even through these disappointments, African-Americans were among Clinton's strongest supporters because many believed Clinton's era was an economic boon.

But there is evidence that Clinton's unmatched popularity among blacks confused many about the true economic impact of his presidency. In a 2005 article I co-authored in the Journal of Black Studies, I analyzed five national surveys from 1984 through 2000. The data show that nearly a third of black Americans held false understandings of black economic conditions during the Clinton years. By the time Clinton left office, many African-Americans incorrectly believed that blacks were doing better economically than whites. In the '80s, barely 5 percent of blacks believed blacks were economically better off than whites. By 2000, nearly 30 percent of African-American respondents believed that blacks were doing better economically than whites. This belief is simply wrong.

There is no evidence to suggest that African-Americans were in a better economic position than whites at any time in American history, including during Clinton's presidency. In fact, striking gaps in income, employment, and wealth continue to distinguish black economic reality in the United States. Clinton's administration did keep inflation low and reduce unemployment. This was a rising tide that lifted many boats, including some black ones. But it strikes me as bizarre that nearly a third of blacks perceived a reversal in the deeply historically entrenched economic position of the races.

The hypnotic racial dance of cultural authenticity that Bill Clinton performed in office lulled many blacks into perceptual fog. Clinton actively cultivated a unique and intense relationship with black voters. He relished this bond and often acknowledged his honorary blackness. It is important to remember that the description of Clinton as black was prompted by his experience of personal, public humiliation at the hands of his political foes. It is not a claim about his racial heritage, but instead a reaction to his experience with and use of cultural markers that often stand for the denigrated elements of black life in America.

As Clinton performed blackness, real black people got poorer. The poorest African-Americans experienced an absolute decline in income, and they also became poorer relative to the poorest whites. The richest African-Americans saw an increase in income, but even the highest-earning blacks still considerably lagged their white counterparts. Furthermore, the '90s witnessed the continued growth of the significant gap between black and white median wealth.

My research shows that respondents who liked Clinton best were always most likely to mistake blacks as doing better than whites. These attitudes about Clinton are not neutral. Deep racial affection toward Bill Clinton contributed to many African-Americans' misunderstanding the continuing economic inequality faced by the race. Like the idea of Bill Clinton as a black president, these overblown ideas of the massive economic benefits accruing to African-Americans in the '90s were largely an illusion. It is hard to vote your interests if you can't judge your circumstances.

It's after four a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2008, and I am already preparing myself for this day...the day of the Nevada caucus.

I am clearly stating the date. That is because we here in Nevada have the distinct privilege and opportunity to make history on this date, by overwhelmingly and decisively declaring this state in support of Sen. Barack Obama and his attempt to change the same old inefficient, dispassionate, and ineffective way things are done in Washington.

I pray that by the end of this day, we will have reason to rejoice. We can get it done here. But whether we do or don't, the momentum goes on...next in South Carolina...and then all of the remaining states. If today's outcome doesn't meet our expectation, do not be dismayed. The momentum must still go on, and we here can offer our support to those other states. For some of us, it will actually mean going there and actively participating on the front lines. For others of us like myself, it will mean hitting the phone lists. However we participate and demonstrate our support, let us do it enthusiastically, positively, passionately, and ceaselessly.

Barack Meets with Precinct Captains at Doolittle Community Center

Last night in Las Vegas, Barack met with local Precinct Captains and their families at the Doolittle community center—basically the Obama campaigns second home—you can check out our other past events at Doolittle here, here, here, here, here, and here.

The caucus this coming Saturday is all about ground game, about making sure that every precinct has strong supporters dedicated to making phone calls, canvassing their streets, and following up with the Obama supporters to grow our grassroots. It takes passion and dedication to get out there and work for change— and let me tell you—our captains here in Nevada have plenty of that!

One of the most inspirational parts of our campaign is the supporters who don’t necessarily have enough time to dedicate themselves to a precinct captain position—but still get involved in a very meaningful capacity. The passion that Barack instills in people is contagious, and we consistently see volunteers exceeding even their own expectations and rising to the occasion to get involved and stand up for change.

One of our fantastic organizers in North Las Vegas, Max Stahl, got this letter from a supporter, Helen, who he helped to get fired up:

Hi Max,
Thank you for your diligent communications and encouraging me to participate in Obama's campaign. As you know I signed a pledge card and committed to volunteer after attending a rally at Doolittle Recreation Center in North. Las Vegas. The lines were long and parking was far away even then. But I could see that Obama's sincerity was real.

Today, Jan. 12, 2008, was one of the most exhilarating days of my life. I had a chance to get involved in the political process on more than just voting and hoping the candidate of my choice would win. My friend Sharon and I decided that we wanted to canvas in an area where people may not feel that they are a part of the American Dream. Along with our precinct captain, we knocked on doors and talked to people on the street who agreed to sign pledge cards and recruit family members to do so. We helped them see that Barack Obama truly wants to make America a better place to live for all of us.

At the end of a long day, we felt like we were walking on water! I refused your offer to become a precinct captain and continued to spread the word via my email campaign. However, today, I felt like the Captain of my own ship and will be proud to say I was not a spectator, but helped to make something wonderful happen.

Yesterday, all across Nevada, thousands of Obama supporters were reaching out to friends, family, and neighbors to let them know about Barack and the Nevada caucus that is less than a week away. Two of our great supporters in Las Vegas, Nelson and Leslie, hit the streets to make sure that everyone was aware of Barack’s commitment to working families and to ensure that they are engaged and able to caucus this Saturday at 11 AM.

Nelson is the son of a Culinary Union member. If you have ever visited Las Vegas, you were almost certainly served or assisted by a member of the 60,000 member strong Culinary Union.

Here is a video of the canvass—and if you look closely—you will see one of our native treats that are served throughout the streets of Las Vegas—corn on the cob with a butter, mayonnaise, and a delicious spice mix—it’s just another one of those great things about Las Vegas that tourists never get a chance to try!

Change Coming from the Left and the Right

Coming off the heels of a win in Iowa, the Obama organization has been growing all over Nevada as we build towards the January 19th caucus. Barack’s ability to bring in a large number of Independents and Republicans is one of his greatest strengths, and it’s clear that a Barack will be a leader that can cut through the partisan bickering in Washington and make real change.

Yesterday morning on KNPR radio, there was a Republican caller named Mike, who spoke about his desire for change and the breath of fresh air that Barack can bring to Washington. Even though he had been a Republican all his life, this time around, he will be caucusing for Barack Obama.

Barack’s has a unique ability to bring disparate ideas and people together to make sure a consensus is reached. Obama Gives Peas a Chance

Christopher Cooper reports from Davenport, Iowa, on the presidential election.

A 15-hour day of rallies and ropelines wasn’t going to keep Robert Gibbs from feeding his superstition.

The southern-bred communications manager for Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign was in a state Tuesday, stuck in the fields of Iowa without black-eyed peas and greens. Southern legend holds that black-eyed peas bring luck and collard greens bring money if eaten on New Year’s Day. “I just need the luck,” Gibbs said. “I can wait for the money.’’

With Obama still reeling through his stump speech in a high-school gym in Dubuque at 11:30 p.m., Gibbs hurriedly dispatched a staffer to retrieve a can of black-eyed peas from a local grocery store. Commandeering a microwave at a hotel after the event, Gibbs cracked the can and quickly offered some to Obama.

As Gibbs tells it, Obama looked askance at his communications director. “I like black-eyed peas but I don’t understand.’’

Gibbs spoke gently. “In the South, it’s all about good luck.”

Obama dug in without another word.

Senator Obama continues to pick up endorsements around the Country as our leaders begin to visualize Senator Obama's audacity of HOPE...

North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad announced this morning that he is endorsing Barack Obama`s presidential campaign.

Conrad has been a senator since 1986, and says he hasn`t endorsed anyone in a Democratic presidential primary before. But Conrad says he believes Obama has the greatest potential among the Democratic presidential candidates to unite the country and inspire people.

He says Obama also has a good understanding of the challenges the country faces and will move the country in the right direction.

Knowles says Obama is electable.

Lake Tahoe for Obama -11th Office Opens in Nevada

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Obama campaign announced today the opening of a new Obama for America office in Lake Tahoe, bringing the total number of campaign offices in Nevada to 11 – more than twice the number of offices of any other presidential candidate. The Obama campaign currently has local offices in Reno, Carson City, Winnemucca, Elko, Pahrump, Boulder City, Henderson, North Las Vegas and two in Las Vegas.

“This new office will provide additional support to the strong grassroots organization we’ve built in every corner of Nevada,” said David Cohen, Obama’s Nevada State Director. “The new office space gives our dedicated supporters from Incline Village and greater North Lake Tahoe a place in their community to get involved on the ground level of Barack Obama’s campaign for change.”

The Nevada Democratic Party has finalized 545 caucus locations statewide to host Nevada’s historic presidential caucus on January 19th. That is more caucus locations in 2008 than there were polling locations in 2006!

Some of the caucus locations aren’t your typical polling spots…. An airport, a Cowboy Café, fire stations, a fairground.

Barack Obama Campaign Opens Winnemucca Headquarters

Winnemucca, NV – Local residents gathered Saturday to celebrate the official grand opening of the new Obama for America headquarters in Winnemucca. This is the campaign’s eighth office in Nevada, with two more opening this week in Boulder City and Henderson, bringing the total to ten offices across Nevada. Obama is the first candidate of either party to open an office in Winnemucca.

“I am so excited that the Obama campaign has opened a new office here in northern Nevada,” said Rick Hull, a precinct captain for the Obama campaign in Winnemucca. “It will give residents the opportunity to get directly involved in the campaign without having to drive to Elko or Reno to do our part to make sure Senator Obama wins the caucuses on January 19th.”

At the grand opening, local volunteers and supporters mingled during a potluck dinner and discussed Obama’s movement to unite the country and bring change to Washington. Afterwards, attendees participated ina mock caucus by voting for their favorite dishes, with homemade gum drop cookies winning in the end.

This is a picture of our Winnemucca mock caucus, where 3 groups tied, and the leader of each group had to draw a high card to determine the winner of a delegate. Nevadans probably haven’t seen this scenario play out very often, but it’s an official rule of the Nevada caucus’ and it has come up several times in our mock caucuses around the state.

Vision for Change-- Samantha Power Discusses Obama Foreign Policy

Today in Las Vegas, the Obama campaign and members of the One campaign were honored to hear from one of Barack's top foriegn policy advisors, Samantha Power, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for her book "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide.

During the question and answer session, Power discussed the genocide in Darfur and conflicts around the world that require a fresh perspective and new leadership in order to make substantial progress. Power reiterated the strongly held conviction among diplomats and experts in foreign relations that our next president must engage in vigorous dialogues and negotiations in order to move past the last 7 years of diminished diplomatic authority, and our inability to mobilize worldwide coalitions that can address genocide in Darfur, worldwide hunger, and diseases like AIDS and malaria.

Power was an advisor to Senator Obama from 2005-2006, and her leadership and advice molded Barack’s decisions to co-sponsor legislation with Republican Senator Sam Brownback to address the genocide that has been ravaging Darfur. Brownback and Obama also co-wrote an op-ed piece in the Washington Times titled, “Policy Adrift on Darfur.”

Senator Obama believes that we should be working with Republicans to address these types of serious global concerns and he has consistently reached across party lines to sponsor legislation that can bring about real change.

The advice of experts like Samantha Power are helping to shape Barack’s campaign, and they are working to bring people together, in order to do what is necessary, to address some of the most important issues of our time.

Samantha Power has been leading the fight to end the genocide in Darfur, and she has publicly stated that Barack has the vision to put America back on the right track.

“American foreign policy is broken. It has been broken by people who supported the Iraq War, opposed talking to our adversaries, failed to finish the job with al Qaeda, and alienated the world with our belligerence. Yet conventional wisdom holds that people whose experience includes taking these positions are held up as examples of what America needs in times of trouble.
Barack Obama says we have to turn the page. We cannot afford any more of this kind of bankrupt conventional wisdom. He has laid out a foreign policy that is bold, clear, principled, and tailored for the 21st century. End a war we should never have fought, concentrate our resources against terrorists who threaten America. End the counter-productive policy of lumping together our adversaries and avoiding talking to our foes. End the era of politics that is all sound-bites and no substance, and offer the American people the change that they need.

The Nevada Democratic Party will partner with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and IMPACTO, 100 Black Men of America, and the College of Southern Nevada to hold the second Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas. The debate will be telecast live by MSNBC and held at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Pacific Standard Time.

Nevada, the second state in the nation to hold a presidential caucus and the first in the West to host an early window nominating contest, was chosen as an early state in part because 40 percent of its population is minority, primarily Hispanic and African-American. Issues affecting these communities such as economic development, education, health care and the war in Iraq will be highlighted during the debate.

With 11 days between the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8th and the Nevada caucus, the Silver State could be the a circuit breaker that halts the momentum of the candidate that wins both earlier contests; the tiebreaker if two candidates split the New Hampshire primary and Iowa Caucuses; or the validator for a candidate who wins all three.

“Nevada will play a critical role in the selection of our nominee as the first test in the West and the first test of the Hispanic vote,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. “We’re proud to announce this debate and applaud NBC and MSNBC for recognizing the important role of Nevada’s diverse electorate. On a conference call with reporters this afternoon, David Plouffe announced the growth of the organization in Nevada.

"This campaign's strength is based on our incredible volunteers," said Plouffe. "The new offices will support the grassroots organization that we have built in every corner of Nevada and will allow for supporters from many communities to take part in the campaign on the ground level."

Already up and running are regional offices in Carson City, Reno, Elko, Pahrump and three in Las Vegas.

Plouffe also noted the growing momentum for Barack Obama in all four early nominating contests.

SFBO Pledge Card Contest a Success after Study Break with Barack

Students across Nevada have been working hard the last few weeks as our pledge card competition has heated up. After yesterday’s study break with Barack, the contest is officially over. We wanted to thank all of the students who got involved and took a leadership role at their school and in their neighborhood. This type of grassroots effort is a huge asset to the Senator, and he is dedicated to representing students and young people when he is in the White House.

The winner of the pledge card contest was Ayla Brown from Las Vegas Academy. Yesterday Ayla introduced Barack at the Study Break. Check out this video with her.

The awe-inspiring enthusiasm for Barack among students shows just how much they desire change and a voice in Washington. The students’ efforts in Nevada made our pledge card contest an overwhelming success, and we want to thank everyone who was involved in moving more students to stand up and speak out.

Barack’s first bill he introduced when elected into the U.S. Senate was a bill to increase Pell grants for students. Barack has and will continue to fight to improve education in America, and he will take back Washington from the lobbyists and insiders who consistently overlook the opinions and needs of young people and students.

Roundtable Discussion Highlights Barack’s Retirement Security Plan

Yesterday’s round table discussion on retirement security touched on a lot of issues that Nevadans are concerned about. The six participants were for the most part nearing retirement or retired, but saving for retirement has become a concern for millions more Americans as pension plans have increasingly come under attack from bankruptcies and healthcare costs have continued to rise.

As someone who was largely raised by his grandparents, Barack Obama has first-hand knowledge that for many seniors, turning 65 does not ensure an end to a lifetime of work. For more and more of today’s seniors and workers preparing to retire, “retirement” is a balancing act of medical costs, threatened pensions, part-time jobs, and extended families. Barack Obama is committed to strengthening Social Security, ensuring that all Americans have access to a portable retirement accounts, protecting pension plans, and providing all Americans with the incentives to save throughout their working careers.

A roundtable discussion with Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama on retirement security morphed Monday into a talk about the participants' myriad other economic problems, from mortgage woes to escalating health care costs. As Obama engaged the six Las Vegas supporters, aged 30 to 70, before a huddle of reporters, he offered solutions such as redistributing tax breaks from the wealthy to lower income earners. "Part of the problem in terms of retirement security is just making enough money in the first place to be able to save," Obama said. He then detailed his plan to roll back tax breaks that President Bush put in place for the wealthy and redistribute them, in part by reducing some of the payroll taxes paid by workers.

Barack has been talking about his specific plan to strengthen retirement security for years, and he will continue to fight for policies that will ensure dignity in retirement.

Grass Roots Carolyn Innovating and Empowering the Obama Campaign

The last time Barack held a town hall forum in Las Vegas, he met with precinct captains for an intimate discussion of grassroots politics and the importance of their work. Before the discussion, one of our most dedicated and hardworking precinct captains, Carolyn Essex, got the crowd fired up and talked about her family, and the future she is trying to build by working with Barack. Carolyn and her son Roc are nearly inseparable, and they both have been building a huge movement for Barack in their precinct. You might say she has a built up a sleeping giant for the caucus on January 19th, 2008.

Carolyn has been coming into our North Las Vegas office nearly every day for months—and if she isn’t in the office, she is working from home on either making phone calls, meeting her neighbors, or doing fantastic work organizing online. And this is the first time she has volunteered for a campaign!

“I was new to the process, I had never volunteered before, and so it was important for me to know who I was working with, but everyone was so open, so accepting. It made me feel really comfortable to be in that environment, even though I was new to a campaign volunteering, I wasn’t new to promoting and organizing – as a comedy-club owner- and my long-term employment with the Community Development Department in Los Angeles. I was really pleased that the staff was so professional and accepting of my ideas. It truly felt like a grassroots movement, with everyone able to bring something special to the campaign. It made me want to continue and volunteer even more. I felt like there was a plan that I fit into, and a part of something really special.”

Carolyn has not only been fitting perfectly into the grass roots work in Nevada, she has been pushing ahead with new ideas and great outreach strategies. She was one of the first active members of Black Planet in Las Vegas who was helping to plan organizational meetings with only Black Planet members—which were an absolutely a brilliant way to get people offline and into our program.

“Black Planet just blew me away—I could put in my zip code—and then I found all these people in my neighborhood of North Las Vegas. I went ahead, with encouragement from my field organizer Christine Schellack, and set up a neighborhood meeting at our Martin Luther King field office which had just recently opened. I think about 12-14 people showed up from my neighborhood and Black Planet! We got people to come in who had not signed pledge cards, who had not engaged themselves—it was definitely a good thing! We even had some people leaning towards other campaigns, and we got some students from CSN to take a closer look at the campaign. This was all because of our outreach on the Black Planet Network.
I met a young lady on there named Angela, who was a Barack Obama supporter. She was already doing tons of organizing online and with her friends and neighbors, but she wasn’t even plugged into the campaign! She is now doing tons of work at the Southwest office and really making a huge difference.
When I first started organizing on Black Planet, some of my friends laughed at me about trying to find supporters online. Then we had that meeting and they were like WOAH Carolyn! And I was like ‘I told you there are a lot of people who support Barack on Black Planet!’”

The Obama campaign in Nevada has no reason to ever doubt anything that Carolyn does, because it ALWAYS gets done. She has been one of the best and most creative members of the grass roots in Nevada. She continues to tell us about new technologies and new ways to meet supporters. We can’t over exaggerate the work that she gets done on a daily basis.

Carolyn is getting it done for Barack, but her family is always on her mind, and the work she does is to ensure that she leaves a better future for her family and friends. You can see the love in her eyes and her unyielding faith in our collective power to change this country through hard work. The Obama campaign in Nevada would like to thank Carolyn and her family for their commitment to Barack and the work they put in to change this country. Cornel West Believes Obama Will Win!

A Princeton professor and outspoken expert on African-American culture said he believes U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy for president is an important breakthrough for blacks -- whether Obama wins the Democratic nomination for president or not.

But Cornel West believes Obama is going to win.

Speaking Monday night to thousands in the Joe L. Reed Acadome on the campus of Alabama State University, West said he believes the Illinois Democrat, after running behind U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York for most of the presidential race, has turned the corner.

"This man's on the move, he's out there running hard and sounding good," West said. Recent polls show Obama and Clinton in a statistical dead heat.

Ellen and Ruthie Canvass for Change

Over the past weekend, canvassing teams were out in full force here in Nevada. In Reno, students and other volunteers hit the stands at the University of Nevada, Reno's football game on Saturday. (The Wolfpack went on to win the game 49-10!)

In southern Nevada, canvassers gathered up pledge cards from people pledging to caucus for Barack on January 19, 2008. In the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Ellen and Ruthie, who are co-precinct captains, spent three hours canvassing their precinct. Here's some video from their adventure:

African Americans Support Barack and the Nevada Democratic Party

On Saturday the African American Democratic Leadership Council held a mock caucus in conjunction with the presidential campaigns, local AIDS activists, and local African American community leaders. The Obama campaign has strong support among local African Americans, and our leadership council showed up to help run the event and press more local African American leaders to support our movement for change.

There were a handful of elected officials, including Obama steering committee members Senator Steven Horsford and Assemblyman Harvey Munford, who gave rousing speeches praising the work of the Democratic Party in Nevada. They encouraged African Americans to prepare their friends and neighbors to get out and caucus on January 19th, 2008.

Representatives from several presidential campaigns even praised Senator Horsford, because he was prominently discussed as one of the leaders who helped ensure that Nevada was awarded early state status and given the national focus it deserves.

A lot of the discussion also centered on the fantastic work of Kenya Pierce-- who is leading the “icare, ican, icaucus” outreach plan that targets the African American community.

Kenya made sure to mention the importance of yesterday-- it was Global AIDS Day—and our campaign was committed to not only wearing the Red Ribbons to demonstrate our solidarity, but several supporters were also going to get AIDS tests and were extremely vocal about getting more African Americans to go out and also get tested and end the stigma of the process.

Barack has been a leader in the fight against AIDS and released a statement and a video yesterday.

Members of our African American leadership committee have been very happy with Barack’s commitment to their concerns and they spent most of the day yesterday talking about the hope he brings to the country, and the numerous ways in which he is addressing issues that specifically concern many of their friends, family, and neighbors.
