OFA-Nevada Volunteers and Staff Give Back During Holiday Season

This holiday season, OFA-Nevada wants to make sure we give something back to make the Silver State a better place. That is why OFA-Nevada organized several December service projects as part of OFA’s “Serve Nevada” community service program.

The first service project was a book drive to collect children’s books. Las Vegas volunteers and staff helped collect nearly five hundred books, which were evenly split between Pearson Community Center and Rafael Rivera Community Center. Kindergarten students at Pearson beamed with glee as a huge box overflowing with new and gently used books was delivered by OFA staff.

Yesterday volunteers in Las Vegas dropped by Bunker Elementary School and Pearson Community Center to read to students.

Leisa Moseley, OFA Regional Director of Nevada, who organized the Read to a Child Program said:

It’s very important that children read and are read to regularly.
When I asked the children why they liked to read a third grader told me, ‘I like to read because it touches all my emotions. Some books make me happy.’
I’m thrilled with the positive feedback from the service project. It was a rewarding experience for both the volunteers and children.

In an update from November’s Thanksgiving food drive, the 917 pound collection from our organization equated to 716 meals for needy families in Southern Nevada.

Nevada Volunteer Trainings Provide Skills To Bring About Change In Local Communities

This weekend, Organizing for America held more than 200 trainings with volunteers and community organizers across the country, including in Nevada, to continue building on the change that America voted for in the historic 2008 election. OFA Nevada organized nine trainings, including events in Henderson, Pahrump, Elko, and Yerington. There are three more trainings scheduled: one in Boulder City and two in Las Vegas.

OFA volunteer Marla Turner attended a training in Las Vegas on Sunday. Here’s what she said was her favorite part of the training:

As I looked around the room I was inspired by the portrait of "America" that was sitting with me, a group comprised of different races, genders, ages, and backgrounds. And I was once again reminded of why I believe in President Obama and his message; because this diverse group of ordinary citizens had showed up on a cold, Sunday afternoon to work together because Barack Obama made us all believe that we could - and that we should.

Marla Turner wasn’t the only one who walked away with renewed sense of hope. Regional Field Director Steve Sisneros said:

These training are helping build momentum on the ground and strengthening our community by bringing volunteers together. It was great to see so many Nevadans genuinely interested in creating change. It makes me hopeful to think about what we will accomplish as an organization.

The trainings are an opportunity for volunteers to acquire the skills needed to strengthen support for health insurance reform in their local community as the Senate continues to debate their version of the bill.

Yes We “Can” Food Drive a Big Success

Yesterday, OFA Intern Robert M. accompanied OFA staffer Steve S. to drop of food collected to benefit Three Square Food Bank, which serves local families in need. Nearly 1,000 lbs of food was delivered in time to help families eat a delicious Thanksgiving meal.

Across the country, Rapid Response teams of active volunteers will develop a plan to organize their areas -- and then execute it in the crucial hours before votes in the House or Senate, right when swing members of Congress are making up their mind.

If we pull it off, the voices of the American people will be louder than special interest lobbyists as we approach the finish line. But to do it, we need our best people involved.

Despite months of intense lobbying and grassroots pressure, many representatives in the House didn't decide how to vote on reform until there were mere hours left.

Supporters Gather at McCarran Airport to Welcome Titus and Berkley

OFA Thanks Congresswomen Dina Titus and Shelley Berkley for Their Support for Health Insurance Reform

On Saturday Organizing for America and Health Care for America Now volunteers and staff gathered at McCarran International Airport to thank to Nevada representatives Dina Titus and Shelley Berkley for supporting health insurance reform.

By 10:30AM a crowd of over 15 showed up to give a warm welcome to Congresswoman Dina Titus. In the afternoon a crowd of about 40 volunteers excitedly greeted Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. Both Titus and Berkley were welcomed by enthusiastic supporters waving thank you signs and chanting “we love you”.

“Thanks to the U.S. House of Representatives, we are now one step closer to real, comprehensive health insurance reform Nevadans and this country desperately needs,” said State Director Jennifer López. “Nevadans should thank Representatives Titus and Berkley for supporting health reform.”

House Vote Scheduled for Tomorrow

Two Memories from Nevada

Carolyn E, a community organizer from North Las Vegas, relives her experience during last year’s Election Day:

On November 4, 2008, I woke up early and made one more round in my district to GOTV. I was by myself- but I didn't care. I just knew I had to do every last bit to get Barack "Hope" Obama elected. After doing my last GOTV round, I went home picked out an outfit and got ready to join all the wonderful people I met in Clark County that worked just as hard, if not harder, to elect Obama.

We were about to celebrate what we hoped would be a victory. We all thought it was going to be close, even though I boldly told my Deputy Field Director that it was going to be a landslide!

After it was announced that Ohio went for Obama, we knew it was going to be a great night and all of our hard work and tears would soon be rewarded. I felt so happy for my community and my family, who have been life-long democrats and we never thought that we would see a man of color in office. It was such a great feeling!

One year later I feel I just need to reflect and absorb every moment because we are living in such great historical times. We actually have a voice and hands on change. We direct change. All the phone calls and door knocks, emails and social networking have been exhilarating. We have to remember that President Obama needs each and every one of us to continue to make change happen the best way we know how. We can write history if we just keep the faith and have the courage to go there.

Gladys R, a pharmaceutical sales representative and super volunteer during the general election, recalls her experience during last year’s Election Day:

I remember that day so clearly! My 11 year old daughter and I were up at 6am delivering door hangers on a chilly morning in Las Vegas. Throughout the day, we hopped around different precincts canvassing neighborhood and looking for all of our last minute voters.

By the time it got dark, I headed back to the Lake Mead office to see if there was anything else I could do that day. I ended up picking up a voter that needed a ride to a poll. We made it there about an hour or so before the polls closed. While waiting for her to cast her vote, my 14 year old son called to tell me Obama won Pennsylvania. Between the positive voter feelings I got while in the field and that announcement, I knew I needed to go home and bring in the official announcement with my family.

I made it home just minutes before the announcement on tv. My son had been following the polls all day and was keeping his own personal tally of the electoral vote count. He was my poll informant that day. When California and the rest of the West coast numbers came in, my son and I watched in amazement how our country celebrated our new President Elect.

I was extremely emotional, and I needed to be with my family to take it all in as the phone calls and text messages flooded our home with "we did it" messages. I ended up going to the Democratic Party Election Night bash at the Rio Hotel for just a short while, and after that, I slept for a long time. There is so much work to be done!

Staff Election Day Memories: Evan Sutton

Evan Sutton was a Regional Field Director for Obama for America - Nevada during the campaign. Here he reflects on his emotional experience when Nevada was called for Barack Obama on Election Day:

As the polls began to close in Nevada, staff was asked to stay in position until the networks called either the race or the state of Nevada. When polls in California closed, the networks named Barack Obama the winner. As I drove with my girlfriend towards the site of the victory party, I felt strangely detached, watching the city pass. When we reached the spaghetti bowl, the National Public Radio team called Nevada for Barack Obama, and I started crying. We arrived at the Rio Hotel just as the President-Elect began his speech. Not wanting to miss the speech, we sat in the car, listening on the radio. We were parked in a side lot, looking out at the Las Vegas strip. I had been on the campaign for almost exactly one year. All the emotion, pressure, and exhaustion of a year of one hundred hour weeks, constant pressure, and the fierce hope that had carried me across the country and through an incredible adventure finally found way to the surface as the tears streamed down my face. We sat in the car listening intently the President's words, sobbing quietly together, holding hands and looking out at the lights.

Staff Election Day Memories: David Osolnick

David Osolnick, was a Field Organizer for Obama for America - Nevada during the campaign. Here, he reflects on his experiences throughout last year’s Election Day:

It was election night and I was out canvassing for the last hour until the polls closed. Once 6pm rolled around, and there was only one hour left before months of toil would all come to an end, I found it impossible to stay in the office. I had to do something "real". As I was out knocking on doors I felt a uniquely numbing nostalgia taking over. Somehow, doing what we had always done was draped with an unprecedented level of emotion. It was like stepping out of a vacuum of driven focus, and for the first time in months, looking around and seeing what surrounded me. Walking in a neighborhood I had walked numerous times before, I suddenly found myself with an almost wistful sense of achievement.

Win or lose, I knew that our campaign had mobilized a terrific grassroots effort that would have had residual value going forward. I was also motivated with the looming realization that a loss would have undoubtedly pushed those first-time believers and latent cynics - who begrudgingly came out of the political closet for the first time or for the first time in a long while - back into the abyss of political abstinence. Tired, yet hopeful, I canvassed on.

A few minutes into what would be my last hour of employment as a Field Organizer, I received a text message. We had won Pennsylvania! Truly a critical win, and for myself as a native Pennsylvanian, it was a personal boon that would propel me onto the next houses with a reinvigorated gusto. A new found spring in my step carried me jaunting from house to house, zig-zagging as I canvassed. With about 20 minutes to go until nothing more could be done, I received another text.

The Ohio results were in, and one of my die hard volunteers (the same one who had shared the great news about Pennsylvania, not even thirty minutes prior) had elatedly shared that we had won Ohio! At this point I was really grappling with the idea of packing it in. I found myself reading over the latest text and saying outloud, "so can I stop doing this now?" I finished off my twenty minutes of canvassing and effectively spoke to no one in those last moments, but I maintained solace in the fact that I did all I could.

Returning to my office I called my Regional Field Director and asked, "so we won Pennsylvania and Ohio, what are we doing? Should we be working poll lines?" He told me to get down to the Service Employee International Union local in Henderson and be ready to celebrate.

I was struck. As I put down my phone I looked at the room full of volunteers looking at me, waiting for some word of what was next. Waiting to see whether they were to move on to some next assignment; delivering water to those in line to vote perhaps, or some other task unforeseen. Normally we would enter the day's data in preparation for tomorrow, but on this day I was met with a new sensation. The work was over. The campaign had not only run its course, but we had won, and as I looked out at the volunteers who were intent on my every reaction (or lack thereof), I found myself savoring the moment.

Speaking through a smirking face that wouldn't subside I said, "we won Pennsylvania and Ohio, and my boss just told me that we need to go out there and celebrate!" Tears flowed among volunteers, hugs were exchanged, and our little office was emptied of people like a space shuttle losing its pressure seal, having its inhabitants pulled from it rapidly and without exception. As the lock tumbled into place, I looked in at the now shadowed space that housed such incredible activity over the past months and again was met with a wistful bliss. The quiet serenity seemed misplaced, and clearly foreign to our typically bustling office, yet the whole moment had such a foreign tenor that I found myself taking mental snapshots of everything, hoping it would all be deciphered later.

At no point - even as I later watched the official victory come to be over the television, surrounded by friends and allies of this emotional triumph - was I able to do anything but stand stoic. No tears, no real understanding of what just happened, only the occasional eruption of smiles and embraces when reintroduced to the old campaign friends I loved so much and saw so seldomly. Knowing that we navigated past the rocky schools of "the politics of usual" and delivered our candidate to victory left me with an indescribable sense of achievement. As I scanned around the room, I found myself sober with the realization that we were standing at the precipice of our unwritten history. As I write this today, with perhaps our greatest achievements waiting ahead of us, I remain hopeful that those terrific moments of joy will be as much a harbinger of what is to come, as a celebration of that which already has.

Staff Election Day Memories: Leisa Moseley

Leisa Moseley, a Field Organizer for Obama for America during the campaign, reflects on her experience during last year’s Election Day:

When I heard the news that Barack had been elected I was at my Assembly District leader Kathy M's home. Kathy opened up her home to us to use as a staging location for GOTV. We had been out all day canvassing and driving people to the polls to vote. It was a very exciting day with much activity. Volunteers were coming in from everywhere, and as soon as one group came in, another left to canvass. As a troop of volunteers left the office to hit the streets one last time, we had a moment to breathe. We turned up the volume on the tv to watch the news as the election results begun to come in.

Upon hearing the results of the election, all of the staff and volunteers in the office began to cry, clap, dance, hug. The feeling was unexplainable. I felt joy, relief, fear of what would happen next, and sense of accomplishment, but overall happiness prevailed.

Today, one year later, I feel extremely proud.

OFA – NV Volunteers Help Make a Difference in Carson City, Henderson, Las Vegas, Reno and Sparks

On Saturday, Organizing for America- Nevada launched its “Serve Nevada” program with community service events across the Silver State.

In Carson City, Reno, and Sparks, staff and volunteers collected over 500 jackets, blankets, hats, mittens, and sweaters for the less fortunate. OFA-NV, in conjunction with Capital City Democrats of Carson City, collected warm articles of clothing for the Good Shepherd Clothes Closet, Rural Center for Independent Living, and Do Drop In. These outstanding volunteers are helping keep Nevadans warm for the winter.

At Double Diamond Elementary School in Reno, volunteers re-painted the ground arrows to ensure that directional arrows are bright and visible to improve safety for students.

Homeless and needy families in Reno and Sparks will enjoy turkey with traditional holiday side dishes this season. OFA collected over 800 lbs of food and helped purchase turkeys for Evelyn Mount's Community Outreach Thanksgiving Dinner.

Volunteers for the Henderson Health Care Canvass went door to door to collect urgently needed goods, including water, toothpaste, and toothbrushes to benefit The Shade Tree Shelter. These goods would help support women, children, and pets in crisis who turn to Shade Tree Shelter for help. Not far away, in Las Vegas, the Canvass and Call for a Cause helped educate Nevadans about health insurance reform while highlighting domestic violence and breast cancer awareness.

Organizing for America to Launch “Serve Nevada” Community Service Program

Volunteers will collect clothing and food, clean up schools, build support for health reform in Carson City, Henderson, Las Vegas, Reno and Sparks

Nevada Organizing for America (OFA), a grassroots project of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) dedicated to supporting President Obama’s agenda for change, is launching its “Serve Nevada” program this Saturday, October 24 with community service events and activities across the Silver State. “Serve Nevada” will provide Nevadans with the tools they need to organize service events to help their communities.

This weekends service events coincide with national “Make a Difference Day,” an initiative started by USA Weekend Magazine. “Make a Difference Day” is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. It is one of the most widely recognized days of service and has become a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.

OFA is committed to building on and strengthening the historic grassroots network created during them 2008 presidential campaign. Since last June, OFA has been building grassroots support for health insurance reform. On June 27, OFA coordinated a national day of service with over a thousand health reform service events in all 50 states. In Nevada, events included blood drives and healthy canned food drives. In recent weeks, Nevada OFA has been hosting events with doctors and health care professionals who have highlighted their personal experience with America’s broken health care system. OFA has held nearly 20,000 events in all 50 states and every congressional district encouraging support for President Obama's plan for health insurance reform.

OFA – NV Volunteers Visit VA Medical Center to Honor Veterans

Yesterday a group of Organizing for America – Nevada volunteers got together to make a special visit to the Lougaris VA Medical Center to thank veterans for their service to the country. The group, led by OFA volunteer Gail Dietrich, dropped of pumpkins and American flags to the veterans.

Gail said:

“We owe a lot to these men and women. This visit was nice to show veterans that we appreciate all they have done for our country and for us.”

Gail invited a group of OFA super volunteers, as well as Nevada State Democratic Party staff and Washoe County Democratic Party Chair, Chip Evans to help brighten the day for over 100 veterans.

OFA NV Deputy Field Director Dave Osolnick said:

“It was really amazing to see how much of an impact Gail’s event had on each of the veterans we met with. It was even more special to know that democratic groups like OFA are able to exist because of the sacrifices of our veterans.”

This event was part of OFA – NV’s “Serve Nevada” program, which aims to improve Nevada by organizing regular community service events. The official launch of the program is set for, Saturday, October 24, 2009, which is also Make a Difference Day.

At the meeting, Janice, who lives in Nevada’s Congressional District 1, delivered declarations to Congresswoman Berkley and spoke about what reform would mean to her. She also thanked Congresswoman Berkley for her support as she headed back to Washington.

Janice, who was accompanied by Nevada State Director Jennifer Lopez and Regional Field Director Leisa Moseley, highlighted the strong support throughout Nevada for health insurance reform now and stressed the importance of passing legislation this year.

“Walk for Health Insurance Reform” in Las Vegas a Huge Success

This past Saturday, Organizing for America in Nevada brought together volunteers and staff to take part in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Team OFA – NV walkers gathered in the early morning at the JW Marriott in Las Vegas for the event. Team members carried Standing Together for Health Insurance Reform signs and passed out Health Insurance Reform Now stickers and literature to other walkers.

Leisa Moseley, Regional Field Director, who was inspired to help form the team after one of her close friends lost her life to breast cancer, said:

"Hope starts with belief in the cause. It was great to see so many Nevadans come together to fight against breast cancer. Hope starts with one walker at a time. Hope starts with OFA Team Nevada”.

This serves as another example of how Organizing for America – Nevada staff and volunteers are committed to serving their communities and directly involving themselves in the process.

The group, organized by Juan Ortega, Regional Field Director, wore specially designed OFA breast cancer awareness shirts. The black shirts read “HOPE” with the top of the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon serving as the “O”. The words “Organizing for America” are sprawled down the right side of the ribbon.

“President-elect Obama was clear throughout the campaign that elected officials in Washington alone aren’t going to bring change. And whether it’s by working to expand the Democratic majority or building grass-roots support for the administration’s agenda, the power to bring the change we need lies in the hands of Americans who are engaging their communities.” - Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt

Two weeks ago, campaign manager David Plouffe announced plans for a series of coordinated house meetings, to be held on December 13th and 14th, in which supporters could meet and help plan the future of this grassroots movement. Since then, over 4,000 events have been planned in communities across the country.

In Nevada, the Las Vegas Sun recently reported:

Nearly two dozen gatherings are scheduled throughout the Las Vegas Valley, and the postelection enthusiasm is still hot.

Yvette Williams, who hosted candidate Obama at a house party in August 2007 and became a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, had to cut off her Sunday party at 75 activists.

Likewise, Fred and Suzie McKay, who held more than 40 events for Obama throughout the course of the campaign, will host 22 people, a full house.

...“He can’t do it by himself. He’s always said that. He’s gonna need our help. That means working with members of Congress, including Republicans,” Williams said.

The article also explained that grassroots supporters are focusing their attention on local as well as national issues:

... Nevadans should pay particular attention to this fact: The Obama organization is also creating a state and local agenda. As Williams put it: “It’s not enough to change politics in Washington if we’re not changing them here locally. It’s good and great if it’s changing in D.C, but if it’s not affecting us in our local community, it’s not doing us any good at all.”

At the weekend events, volunteer leaders will poll participants on chief priorities and find out who among them has particular expertise or relationships with legislators and other key players. And, they’ll strategize about a plan for the coming months.

Along with the recent postelection surveys, these house meetings are a way for supporters to share their input and help determine what comes next for this movement, both locally and nationally.

As David Plouffe explained in a video message yesterday:

This grassroots organization has always been about more than an election. It's about transforming our country -- and we've only just begun.

Saving the best for last, this morning Barack Obama rallied Nevadans on the hilltop football field of Coronado High School in Henderson. The time had come, he argued, to "turn the page" from the broken policies and divisive politics of the past. "In three days," he told his audience, "at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need."

Obama critiqued his opponent's economic policies and discussed his own plans to address the deep troubles facing our country. But today he also spent considerable time addressing his hopes for America's future. Americans, he reminded us, have overcome hardship before. "Nevada, I know these are difficult times. But . . . the American story has never been about things coming easy--it's been about rising to the moment when the moment was hard . . . That's how we've won great struggles for civil rights and women's rights and workers' rights. And that's how we'll write the next great chapter in the American story . . . That's what hope is--that thing inside that insists, despite all evidence to the contrary, that there are better days ahead. If we're willing to work for it. If we're willing to shed our fears. If we're willing to reach deep inside ourselves when we're tired, and come back fighting harder."

His message was clear. Now is the time for struggle. Now is the time to fight for change. "Don't believe for a second this election is over," he warned. "Don't think for a minute that power concedes. We have to work like our future depends on it in these last few days, because it does. But I know this, Nevada, the time for change has come."

After Barack's speech, the soccer field behind the stadium filled with hundreds of fired up people who got organized by region into canvassing teams. They would soon disperse to knock on doors and tell their fellow citizens, one at a time, why they are supporting Barack Obama for president.

Change begins on November 4. With three days left, it's time for all of us to get out every last vote.

I was impressed by how smooth and professional the process was. There were at least 20 voting booths, and all were packed. I didn't have to show any ID (I had one ready in case), and once I got to my booth, it was only about 5 minutes or so to work through the ballot. I'm so excited to have voted for Obama! Also, during the 10-15 minutes I waited in line, there were two first-time voters. Everyone erupted in applause when they were announced. Fired up! Ready to go!

In reading these responses, please keep in mind that our end goal in sharing amongst ourselves is to elect Barack Obama president. It's important that Nevadans lock in their vote by voting early. And with just six days left before the election, we need your help more than ever. Please sign up to help Barack get out the vote in Nevada.

"I'll preface this by saying that I've always been a very cynical person. I did not vote in 2000. In 2004, I didn't vote for John Kerry as much as I voted against George Bush. But, there was a moment in 2004 that really struck me. I was watching the Democratic National Convention, and this young, black man took the stage delivering a speech in a low timbre with eloquence and ferocity. The hairs on my arms were on end. I actually had goose bumps. I turned to my wife and asked, 'Who is this guy?' That did it for me, I had to find out.
"I tore through Dreams of My Father and have to admit to a tear in my eye in a few parts. A few years later, I picked up The Audacity of Hope and read it with the same vigor. Reading this book cemented my feelings for Barack. What struck me was his ability to take a 360 degree approach with the issues, seeing not only the arguments for both sides, but also the grey area in the middle. This was echoed in his DNC acceptance speech this year: "We may not agree on abortion, but we can surely agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country." He has the acute ability to see both sides of the coin. I believe this is a true indication of how he will govern….
"I'm voting for Barack Obama because I believe he is the future. I believe he is hard work and dedication personified. He has overcome virtually insurmountable odds to get where he his. Nothing was handed to him. His story is an inspiration to millions. His is a story I would be proud to tell my children.
"You asked for specifics. It is very difficult to be specific about a feeling. That's what I have, a feeling. And hope. I hope Obama can conquer partisanship. I hope he can restore America's standing in the world. I hope he's not just full of empty rhetoric. I'm willing to give him a shot. He can't mess things up much worse than they are right now. It's not the lesser of two evils. It's the hope for a better country. I'm curbing my disillusionment and cynicism for this election cycle."

"The second day of Early Voting of Nevada, I was volunteering at a polling place on behalf of one of our Judicial candidates. I've never before seen so many voters bringing their children with them to vote. The most memorable moment took place in the last ten minutes before the polls were due to close. A car full of young adults (probably no older than 19) rolled into the parking lot outside of the polls. About six young African-American men emerged from the little hatchback, braids swinging, pants low, jewelry aglow, each one clutching a sample ballot. They proudly announced that they were there to put it down for Obama. So much for stereotypes! These are probably the kind of kids that people would refer to as hoods. That wasn't the case at all. They were just young people taking an interest in their future and trying to make history the way that the hippies did before them."

Recap: Michelle Obama Rally at Doolittle Park in Las Vegas

Hope and joy. Michelle Obama was greeted with an outpouring of emotion at a rally held in West Las Vegas last night.

"This is something!" She cried to the cheering crowd. Her speech was interrupted early on by a thunderous chant of "Yes we can!" Mrs. Obama acknowledged the moment by recalling encounters with "50-, 60-, 70-year-old supporters" who are voting for the first time, telling her their stories with tears in their eyes. "There's something powerful about that," she said.

Obama didn't mention her own biography except in relation to her family. "I'm here as a wife. I'm here as a mom. I'm here as a daughter." She spoke of her parents, of her father who was a shift worker in the South Side of Chicago, and of the values with which she was raised. She spoke of the aspirations of working-class Americans who hope for a better future for their children, and of her parents' realized dreams when their children went to college.

Today, she said, Americans were struggling more than ever, with job losses, home foreclosures, and spiraling health care costs. "And now, we all have a choice to make in this election. And when you look at the issues and the candidates, the choice is clear." Barack Obama has a plan to rebuild the economy that is built around the middle class. For health care, education, and energy, Barack Obama would create jobs, expand educational opportunity, and protect our environment.

With the campaign nearing an end, she said, "We're almost there but we're not there yet. We take nothing for granted. Barack Obama is the underdog until he's sitting in the Oval Office." It was up to all of us, she said, to shape the outcome of the race. "It begins with early voting," said Obama. She also urged people to knock on doors, and to not let up until Barack Obama is elected President.

For many women, Michelle Obama is a role model and an inspiration. Some of them spoke up about their feelings toward her.

Liz, 50, is a lawyer and Democratic Party activist. "Being a lawyer, I've admired her intellect and legal skills in the past, and now she's just amazing politically too," she said. "Whatever Michelle gets into, she accomplishes things, so I think she'll have something to show for [the next] eight years."

Caroline, 56, said, "I think she's a really beautiful lady. She speaks so well. And she speaks up for her husband very well. I really love her for that. I came out because I appreciate her standing up for her husband. And," she adds with a smile, "I want to see what a first lady really looks like."

Yesterday several hundred UNLV students came out for a rally and concert featuring music by The Bird and The Bee and DJ Jimmy Tamborello from Postal Service. Anthony Kiedis, lead singer for Red Hot Chili Peppers, spoke from the heart about the struggles of his middle-class sister in raising her family. He passionately urged the crowd to turn their support into votes for Barack Obama.

With just eight days to go before the election, the campaign has hit its highest gear. With early voting in progress, volunteer canvassers are pounding the streets of Nevada to get out every possible vote for Barack Obama. This Saturday Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa kicked off a Saturday canvass at our North Las Vegas field office.

Urging the volunteers not to get complacent, Villaraigosa warned the gathering that "there's a big difference between a poll and a vote. We have an opportunity to win in Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado. We can't get complacent." If Obama wins the West, said Villaraigosa, it will be "because of people like you."

"I wanted to come and thank you."

After the pep talk, the Civic Center Drive office hummed with activity as people received instruction, gathered their packets, and went on their way. Field organizer Gaby Baca took volunteers Alan, a property manager and real estate developer, and Arleth, a student, with her to a nearby development in this heavily Latino district. Before they separated to knock on doors, she gave Alan an impressively detailed rundown on specific voters and their concerns.

Arleth, 15, walked with Gaby and got some valuable insights into canvassing. "It's not hard to canvass," said Gaby, and doesn't take special skills. "It takes patience and enthusiasm, but it's actually a lot of fun." Some days, "you might knock on 100 doors and only 10 voters answer, but it's critical to knock on the next door with the same enthusiasm as the first."

After the canvass, Gaby said that Arleth did great. "She was shy to knock on the first door, but later she just took over," and spoke about why she, though not old enough to vote, was helping to get Barack elected.

Gaby explained that door-to-door canvassing, by "adding a personal touch" to communication, is the best and most effective way of reaching out to undecided voters.

Lately, canvassers have been the most effective in the evenings during the week, often talking to half of the people on their lists. "In my assembly district, AD 11, filled with working class families, I need more canvassers to go out in the evenings," said Gaby. "This weekend is also going to be a huge canvassing weekend: people who have never knocked on doors are going out for the first time, and high school students too."

Recap: Barack Obama Rallies Nevadans in Reno, Las Vegas

Barack Obama spoke to Nevadans yesterday in what might be the last large gatherings in our state before the election. In rallies of 11,000 in Reno and 18,000 in Las Vegas, he gave what amounted to his closing argument after a long and rigorous campaign.

He first made the case against the Republican economic policies that Senator McCain has supported for eight years. Now, instead of dealing with the economic crisis, the McCain campaign has chosen to distract with outrageous attacks. "He's throwing the kitchen sink at me," riffed Obama. "All seven of his kitchen sinks." In fact, McCain has voted with George Bush's policies 90% of the time, giving tax breaks to the largest corporations, supporting privatization of Social Security, and proposing to tax health care benefits for the first time in history.

Turning to his own message, Obama spoke of his belief in our country's ability to meet our current challenges, that "here in America, our destiny is not written for us, but by us. That's who we are, and that's the country we need to be right now." Laying out a detailed plan to "rebuild this country from the bottom up," he discussed tax relief for the middle class, investment in renewable energy to create new jobs, and the establishment of a fairer, more efficient health care system through insurance reform. His immediate rescue plan for America includes targeted tax relief for companies that hire here at home, and eliminates tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. He would impose a three-month moratorium on foreclosures to "give folks breathing room to get back on their feet."

The Senator closed with what has always been his overarching theme: that Americans, working together as one people, cannot fail. "Not now. Not when we have a crisis to solve and an economy to save." Despite our current woes, "I ask you to believe in yourselves, in each other, and the future we can build together. Now it falls to us," he said. "And if you stand with me in ten days, I promise you--we will win Nevada, will win this election, and then you and I--together--will change this country and change the world."

Early voting has started in Nevada and runs until October 31.

Recap: Pumpkin Carving and Sign Painting for Obama

Volunteers are the life blood of a campaign. Today at the NW Las Vegas field office, they put their creativity to work painting signs for Barack Obama's rally tomorrow in Las Vegas, and got to carve some pumpkins too. "It's just a way to give people a break and have some fun," said Steve, a field organizer.

As the signs multiplied in number, people came by in ones and twos to canvass. Steve summed up the unending work of a field office this way: "Lather, rinse, repeat."

The youngest staff member in NW Las Vegas might be Chase, a third grader. Chase's mom works next door, so he's frequently found at the Obama office, helping out. Today he's painted a custom sign: "Chase 4 Obama."

Brittany and Gabriela are seniors at the Las Vegas Academy. The students, they say, are following the election closely. "It's humongous," says Gabriela. "Every other conversation is about the election. Teachers hang in groups around doorways [and talk about it]. There are special clubs at school, and mini-debates spring up in class."

Seniors are especially aware of the issues. "We're going into the real world. We won't have mommy and daddy to take care of us anymore." says Brittany. Gas prices are a big deal for her. She pays for one tank per paycheck from her part-time job.

After working on signs for a few hours, Dan is ready to canvass. "I felt the fierce urgency of now," he says, when asked why he is volunteering. His partner today is Jennifer. She's currently unemployed, but is making the best of the situation by volunteering for the Obama campaign.

"Obama has inspired a lot of people," says Jennifer. "I think he's the change we need after eight years of Bush." Today, when Jennifer encounters an unoccupied home, she makes sure she hand-writes the nearest early vote location on her campaign material.

"I was worried about whether my vote would count or get lost because it was early, so hopefully this whole process works. I checked four times to make sure I voted for Obama. I've had people come by my house and offer to drive me to vote, because I'm a stay-at-home mom without a car, and I can't even express how truly grateful I am for all of their assistance. For once I felt like I was a part of a community, and it was all because of the kindness of those going door to door, offering their help."

Recap: Krave for Change--An Evening with Bette Midler

The Las Vegas LGBT community came out in force last night for Bette Midler and Barack Obama. "I've never given a stump speech before," she warned the crowd at Krave nightclub. "But there's never been anyone I believed in enough."

Mixing humor with a serious message, Midler reminded "the gays" that "no one has a bigger network [than you]. It's gigantic. Do me a favor," she continued, "and call everyone you know. Tell them to vote early and vote for Barack Obama."

Midler reminded her audience of the stakes in this election. "Have you ever lived through eight years like this?" she asked. Wistfully imagining what this time would have been like had Al Gore been president--with competent, responsible, and humane leadership--she compared the Bush presidency to the terrible outcomes imagined in the Jimmy Stewart film "It's a Wonderful Life." Her message: every vote counts.

Barack Obama, she argued, has both the intellect to lead and, importantly, the ability to inspire. "He can show us the path out of this quagmire. He makes you want to join him on that path," she said. "Our nation's heart is broken. We need somebody to help us put it together again, and that person is Barack Obama."

Fans of Bette and Barack were delighted by Midler's appearance for their candidate. Sarah, a law clerk, e-mailed her mother with the news. "I said, 'Guess who I get to see!'--because she wants to see Bette Midler [when she visits Las Vegas]. I said to her, 'Sometimes it pays to be gay.' I'm out here for everything--for Bette, for Barack, for the community."

Mike and Bryant came with their long-time friend Paul. All three work in the hotel industry. Mike related the problems currently facing tourism in Las Vegas: cancellations, empty rooms, and layoffs. "Fortunately the Venetian [where Mike works] hasn't had to lay off anybody, but I know a lot of other companies in Las Vegas that have laid off up to 500-1000 people. It's becoming really bad, with our economy and the world economy affecting everything."

Mike says that Obama understands middle class America. "That's how he was brought up. And he knows where the middle class is and what we need to change." Barack Obama, says Mike, "knows that without the middle class, there's not much of an America left."

Paul adds, "I was already supporting Obama, but I'm definitely more fired up about it now. We're going to do early voting this weekend, and I'm really looking forward to that. I really feel like it's time for a change."

Recap: Bill Clinton Rallies for Change in Las Vegas

"He's still Bill." That was Dale's reason for coming out to hear Bill Clinton speak at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas yesterday. "And," she added, "I'm just passionate about turning Nevada blue. I'm doing everything I can, knocking on doors, talking to people, and getting them out to make a change."

She and 2,500 others in attendance were not to be disappointed. After a rousing introduction by home state senator Harry Reid, the former president laid out the case for Barack Obama in no uncertain terms. Framing the election as "the greatest hiring decision in the world," he declared that "it isn't close who we ought to hire. The answer leaps out at you." The answer, he said, is Barack Obama.

Clinton focused his argument on two main areas: the financial crisis and health care. He argued that Obama's reasoned and thoughtful response to the financial crisis augured well for his future leadership style. He stated that while "the right thing to do may not be popular in the moment" with the many challenges we face as a nation, Barack Obama was a leader who could be trusted to make the right decisions at the most difficult times.

He also spoke at length about America's broken health care system. According to Clinton, we are ranked 29th in the world in infant mortality, and 1 in 8 people with cancer in America can't pay for their medicine on time, "and they will perish for it." Barack Obama would repair a bloated, inefficient system where "30 cents on every health care dollar" is spent on paperwork, while "no other country spends more than 19 cents."

With still two weeks to go before the election, Clinton urged his audience to stay focused and to get the message out. "He can't lose unless people forget what this election is about."

Afterwards, Pat, a local retailer, assessed Clinton's speech. "It was like he was talking to me," she said. "I'm absolutely thrilled. I've been a Bill Clinton supporter for years. I think he did a lot of good for our country, and I think Barack Obama will be able to do the same."

Dale's husband (also named Dale) was also pleased with Bill. "He did fantastic. He was right on point with everything. He spelled it out to those people who may still have been undecided, and he gave them a picture of the way to go, and the only way to go is Barack Obama."

Recap: March Early for Change in West Las Vegas

On a bright Saturday morning supporters of Barack Obama in West Las Vegas came out en masse to "March Early for Change." Sponsored by the Clark County Democratic Black Caucus and Women for Obama, a community group, the event marked the start of early voting in Nevada. It also commemorated "Bloody Sunday," the 1965 Selma voting rights march that became a symbol of the civil rights struggle. Forty-three years ago, the marchers were beaten and tear-gassed by authorities. On this day, the atmosphere was joyful.

A diverse group of the young and not-so-young, small children with their parents, veterans, and elders in wheelchairs kicked off the short march at the Martin Luther King statue at Carey Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. From there they walked to the Pearson Community Center parking lot for a rally featuring State Senator Steven Horsford before continuing to the center to vote.

Gilbert voiced a common sentiment. "The weather and everything is beautiful," he said, smiling. "It's going to be a good year. Because change is coming. Barack Obama's going to make everything a little better."

Marion, a Methodist minister, provided some context. "To participate in one of the greatest dates in American history… The excitement is so high I couldn't wait until the regular time." He laughed. "I'm excited. I thank God I lived to see this day, having come from the South, to see that [Selma] was not in vain."

Martha, Monique, and Florence were a striking trio in matching bright white outfits and sparkly gold torches. Monique explained that their outfits symbolized the passing of the torch of civil rights to a new generation and a new era. Martha is a precinct captain and Monique was a delegate for Obama. Said Florence, "We've been working for Obama since he started and we're not gonna quit until he's president."

Change can't come soon enough. Join the citizens of West Las Vegas in voting early for Barack Obama.

Recap: Joe Biden Rallies Supporters in Henderson

Joe Biden was a man on fire as he lit up a throng of 3,800 in Henderson's Morrell Park last night. His core message of a return to economic fairness was part of a larger theme of reuniting a country badly splintered along political and economic lines. "It's going to take all of us to turn this country around," he told the crowd. "The stakes in this election could not be higher. This is the most consequential election in our lifetime."

While Senator McCain wants to "double down" on the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, Biden reminded his supporters that those tax cuts were designed to expire in 2010. "Let the law work," he urged. Instead, he and Senator Obama have proposed substantial tax cuts to the middle class. "There is no fundamental difference between what John McCain is proposing and what's been going on for the last eight years!"

Smiling, Biden went on, "My mother used to tell me, 'Joey, if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it's a duck!' They're ducking reality!"

Recap: Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright Speaks at UNLV

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright held a "Conversation on National Security" before an overflow audience of students and community members at the University of Las Vegas yesterday. She was introduced by former Nevada Governor Bob Miller, who expressed hope that Nevada would swing blue due to a new 100 thousand plurality of registered Democrats. He also praised Obama as a leader who would "unify world opinion, not dictate it."

Albright began by proclaiming that, at age 71, this was the most important election she has witnessed in her lifetime. "We are in a very difficult place," she argued, that required a president with judgment, wisdom, curiosity and vision. "We need Barack Obama to be president."

Recap: Las Vegas Debate Watch Party at the Paradise Cantina

Debate watching beat out post-season baseball tonight at a downtown Las Vegas restaurant filled to capacity with Obama supporters. In fact, the feisty crowd sounded more like a crew of sports fans than civic-minded citizens, roaring their approval when Senator Obama scored a point. Deborra provided some mid-debate commentary. "I think he's great. I expected him to do good, and he's doing good. I'm very pleased with him."

While no decibel meter was on hand, the loudest hurrahs might have occurred after a question about the tone of the campaign. After McCain reiterated the gist of many of his negative ads, Obama replied, "I think the fact that this has become such an important part of your campaign, Senator McCain, says more about your campaign than it says about me."

Home run.

Our supporters left in good spirits. Said Keith, "I'm going to feel damn proud to have him as my president. And that's something that I don't think I've said before. In 2004 I voted against Bush. This time I'm voting for Obama, and that makes me proud to be a Democrat, and proud to be an American."

Peter's mood was more celebratory than analytical. His favorite line of the night was Obama's retort to McCain's attacks on his associations. "I thought that was good. Actually, that's the only thing I remember," he said with a laugh. "And Joe Six Pack? Now we know what he does for a living. He's a plumber." Turning serious, Peter asked how he could volunteer for the campaign.

On Becoming a Precinct Captain: Tom, Dave, Barbara and Aster Show How It’s Done

Tom, an assembly district leader and precinct captain, has a lot on his mind these days. His career as a sole practitioner of real estate law keeps him busy, but tonight he's come straight from work to the field office to meet two potential precinct captains, Blythe and Lori. He's here to make the final sale.

They sit down with staff members Eric and Nat to answer questions and discuss responsibilities. Tom canvasses from noon - 8 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, and phone banks two evenings a week. His energy is infectious, but Blythe and Lori don't need much convincing. They share a neighborhood and have even discovered that their children are classmates at school. Now they've bonded through their commitment for political change.

"I'm just so excited and inspired," says Blythe. "If I care, I need to get involved."

Lori agrees. She's been an admirer of Obama's ever since hearing his 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention. "Things now are a mess. You can't sit anymore and let it go by."

Recap: A Conversation with Future Leaders--Governor Bill Richardson Speaks at Rancho High School

A standing ovation greeted New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson before he addressed an overflow crowd of students at Rancho High School this morning. His talk was geared to topics close to their hearts as he introduced many of them for the first time to Barack Obama's priorities for education and the economy.

Richardson highlighted Obama's strong support for the Dream Act, which provides a route to citizenship for young people who attend college or serve in the armed forces. He also discussed Obama's plan to provide $4,000 in tuition aid in return for 100 hours of community service. Speaking directly to issues facing the Latino community, he emphasized the urgent need to increase high school graduation rates among Hispanics and outlined Obama's policy proposals to achieve this goal, including increased teacher pay, preschool education, and improving No Child Left Behind.

Local Assemblymen Mo Denis and Ruben Kihuen also spoke to the high schoolers. Kihuen asked for a show of hands to see how many of them had volunteered for the Obama campaign. A sprinkling of hands rose up. He reminded them that none of Obama's educational priorities would come to pass unless he is elected, and urged them to volunteer, noting that there were only three weeks left in the campaign. "Take a few hours and phone bank, or talk to your neighbors and get out the vote," he said.

Recap: Latinos for Obama Debate Watch Party

Last night Latino supporters of Barack Obama gathered for homestyle Mexican cooking and presidential debate watching at El Taquito Restaurant in North Las Vegas. Joining them were Assemblymen Ruben Kihuen (AD 11) and Mo Denis (AD 28). For much of the debate, the restaurant was eerily quiet as all eyes were glued to the overhead monitors. The deceptive calm was periodically disrupted, however, by raucous cheers when Obama scored a good point.

Afterwards, the audience was jubilant. Their verdict: Obama had scored a clear victory.

Paulo, a magazine publisher, was perhaps the most excited. "In Spanish, we say 'Es mi héroe.' That means, 'He's my hero.' When I met [Obama] a month ago, I said, 'Allow me to call you Mr. President, because after November 4th, everyone's going to call you that.' He's going to win. We have a new president. I'm absolutely sure of it."

Meet the Movement: Pam and Nick, Mother and Son Leadership Team

The youngest precinct captain in Nevada might be living in Henderson. 15-year-old Nick's "boss" is his mother, Pam, a neighborhood leader who covers Nick's precinct and 16 others. Volunteers like Pam and Nick are the lifeblood of the campaign, shouldering the responsibility of organizing walks and knocking on doors, turning out voters for Barack Obama one person at a time.

"I know the economy is more important now in most people's minds," says Pam, but "for me, the war is a personal issue." Her husband, also an Obama supporter, is a squadron commander at Nellis Air Force Base and has already completed one deployment abroad. "I don't want my husband to deploy again. It's extremely rough on the kids, especially families with small children. I want it to end."

Meet the Movement: Educational Pioneer Dr. Charles D. Moody, Sr.

Dr. Moody likes to tell a story about the birth of his first son. Soon after his marriage to Christella Parks in 1955, the young Army captain was assigned to duty in the Panama Canal Zone. Christella followed him there, but after becoming pregnant with their first child, she insisted on returning to her parents in Chicago to give birth. "She was aware of the fact that you had to be a natural-born citizen" to be eligible to become president of the United States. "He might want to run," she insisted, "and if I go to Chicago no one can say he wasn't natural born." What did Dr. Moody think of the audacity of her hope? "I believed her, she's a very brilliant woman!"

Today, his eldest son Charles Jr. owns his own construction firm--consistently ranked as a Black Enterprise Top 100 company--and Dr. Moody is supporting another young black man for president of the United States. Now retired from his position as Vice Provost for Minority Affairs at the University of Michigan, he has resettled in Las Vegas and comes five days a week into the Durango Campaign for Change office to help in the election effort.

Recap: Ambassador Dennis Ross Speaks on Obama’s Middle East Policy at Temple Beth Shalom

Former Middle East diplomat Dennis Ross spoke before a crowd of 150 at Temple Beth Shalom in Las Vegas this past Saturday. His visit was both a policy address, providing an overview of Barack Obama's likely policies in the Middle East, as well as an assessment of how Obama would lead, gleaned from his own personal observations since first meeting the senator in 2005.

Ross predicated much of the rationale for his endorsement of Obama on his conviction that the current administration's Middle East policy has been a failure. "Today the U.S. is not liked, feared, or respected in the Middle East," he stated. While our international standing has diminished, the need for cooperative effort has never been greater. "We cannot solve the problem of Iran on our own. We cannot solve the problem of Pakistan on our own," he said, yet according to Ross the U.S. no longer has the political power to elicit cooperation in these pressing matters. While President Bush may be a great friend of Israel, he argued, the practical effects of his policies have left Hamas, Hezbollah, and especially Iran much stronger today than when he took office.

From this example of a failed leadership model, Ross went on to describe what he sees as Obama's strengths. Ross noted that he had taken at least 20 presidential overseas trips with Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Clinton. "I know what it takes for a president to be effective," he said. After accompanying Obama on his multi-country tour this summer, Ross believes that "Barack Obama is not just good. He's exceptional." He cited Obama's eagerness to hear opposing viewpoints, the selfless teamwork he engenders in those around him, and his genuine and subtle understanding of Middle East politics.

Regarding Iran, Obama has convinced Ross that he understands the "existential threat" Israelis feel from a nuclear-armed Iran, yet, unlike Bush, Obama also understands that the threat of force should be leveraged by the promise of peace; that we must "concentrate their minds on what they can lose, then show them what they have to gain. If you don't pursue peace, you produce disbelief," and therefore cannot bargain from a position of strength.

Ross closed by urging his listeners to support Obama because "we can't afford not to. We need a leader who understands the world we actually live in. We need a leader like him."

Fight for Knocks: High Schoolers Compete in Canvassing Contest

Not all high school competitions play out on the athletic field. Silverado, Basic, Green Valley, Coronado, and Del Sol students are pitting their teams of student canvassers against each other in a three-week-long contest to see which school can knock on more doors for Barack Obama's campaign. Today an organizational meeting with representatives from each school was followed by a neighborhood canvass.

The whole thing started with the campaign's school outreach program. After an organizer gave a talk at Silverado's Democratic Club, Michelle, 17, decided it was time to take action. The next weekend she stopped by the Southeast Las Vegas field office and met with some of the staff. "We came up with the idea and ran with it," she said. They first thought of doing a canvass competition between football rivals Silverado and Green Valley. But after a teacher from Basic had a campaign representative speak at her class, over 20 of her students ended up joining the competition.

New Voters Rush to Beat Mail-In Registration Deadline

Tomorrow, October 4, is the deadline for mail-in voter registration. All around town today new voters rushed to beat the deadline. At the Henderson DMV, Barry, an Obama volunteer, asked everyone who passed by if they were registered to vote. Not everyone was.

John had voted in one national election, but it was so long ago he doesn't remember which one. "I was young, I didn't really understand. As you get older, you learn from day-to-day living about the economy, what's working and what's not. You get an opinion. And once you have a family, you want to make better choices for them. I think more people in America are going to vote [in this election] than in any other election in our history." He registered for the first time in memory this morning. He'll be voting for Obama.

Meet the Movement: Precinct Captain Grover White Registers New Voters

Grover White is a man on a mission. At his post in front of the Las Vegas Athletic Club, he's registering as many voters as he can between now and October 4th, when mail-in registration ends. "I average 35-40 new voters a day. I signed up 54 yesterday! We're getting them all [Democrats and Republicans] registered. We work across party lines in this campaign," he said with a laugh.

He has reason to be sanguine. "Republicans are so frustrated with their party," he confided. "I hear it again and again. The fact is, we're right on the issues. I've had undecided voters come up to me, and I talk to them about health care, Iraq, the economy." The one-on-one communication is essential, according to White, because it gives a personal face to the campaign. "Talking to me gives them the commitment to vote. Doing this has been so productive. I've enjoyed it a lot."

Meet the Movement: Jill, Esther, and Marsha

Every weekday morning for the past month and a half, visitors to the NW Las Vegas DMV office would find a polite, cheerful woman offering to help them register to vote.

A retired teacher, Jill lived her entire life in Indiana until she and her husband (also a teacher) followed their son when he moved to Las Vegas several years ago. "I just fell in love with the serenity," she says. Not that it's perfect here. "I taught in Las Vegas for three years. In [my Indiana town] everyone had a home. Some of my students here were homeless. They lived in shelters. No one should have to do that. We need to take better care of our kids."

What makes her such a dedicated Obama supporter? For her, character is an issue because she believes that it's the source of policy. "When you look at the war in Iraq, Katrina, the economy, [it's obvious] Bush doesn't care about people. We have people who are hurting, who might not make another four years of this."

Barack Obama supporters across Nevada gathered in homes, bars, and restaurants tonight to watch the first of three presidential debates between Obama and John McCain.

Two of the bigger parties in Las Vegas were held at Esmeralda’s Restaurant and at the Paradise Cantina. At Esmeralda’s, a diverse crowd of about 70 Latinos for Obama clapped, laughed, ate pupusas, and got to know one another through the campaign. David, a self-professed independent, came to support Obama, having made up his mind when John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. "It's a matter of judgment," he said. The fired up crowd included Assemblymen Mo Denis (AD 28) and Ruben J. Kihuen (AD 11) and Culinary Workers Union chief Geoconda Arguello-Kline (Local 226).

A more intimate group of friends gathered at the North Las Vegas home of Sheryl and Milan. For Sheryl, a former Nevada Democratic Party staffer and self-employed business consultant, hosting the debate marked a return of sorts to politics after a long period away.

It was probably no surprise that the women—Cathy, Sophie, Ruth, and Sheryl—unanimously agreed that Obama had won. Sheryl was pleased at how specific and focused Obama’s arguments were. Obama, argued Sophie, had a way of highlighting connections between issues, tying national security to the real fight against Al Quaeda, for instance. Cathy concurred. “He tied it all together. McCain’s ideas are old, 20th century.” But she felt the vice presidential debate would be the most telling of all.

Milan, a long-time Republican who “feels like an independent” these days, worked in the garage during the debate, wanting to give the women their space. But he plans to watch the debate online, and is an undecided voter. Retired from the Air Force, Milan lost his job as a jet fighter mechanic when the Air Force outsourced the work to independent contractors. “I like a lot of things about Democrats," he admits. "I like the idea of getting out of Iraq. I like Barack; he’s down to earth.”

Milan sounds like a Republican who might cross over on November 4th. It’s up to us to convince him to make the change.

Meet Ruth: A Nevada Educator for Change

Ruth describes herself as a "perfect blend" of loving grandmother and Attila the Hun. A retired senior manager at the U.S. Postal Service, Ruth started volunteering at the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in 2003 after attending a fundraiser. Her passion and commitment to the students eventually led to a new, full-time career as Dean of Students and Student Coordinator at the school.

Although Andre Agassi is a well-funded charter school, Ruth is riled up about the state of education in Nevada. "We're 50 out of 50 [states] in proficiency. Starting salary for teachers here is $35,000 a year. Our mail carriers make more than that." She supports higher pay for teachers, the Obama-Biden plan to revamp No Child Left Behind, and their call for a tuition tax credit in return for community service. She also has ideas of her own. "Why not offer tax incentives to retired folk to volunteer at our schools?" she wonders.

Ruth has opened her home to out-of-state volunteers. After 10-hour workdays, she usually heads out to the North Las Vegas MLK Office to volunteer, doing what she can to help. "I sweep floors, take out the garbage"--anything but answer the phones. "I'm too blunt for that," she admits. But she does love to cook, and brings in big pots of spaghetti, home-made Sloppy Joe and cole slaw to the staff, and heads out to Jimmy's Market on the weekends to feed the hungry volunteer canvassers. "I'm making my Jack Daniel's bread pudding next. It'll make you get up and walk and talk!" she says with a laugh. "Yep. It'll keep 'em on the phones."

Ruth's doing her part for the campaign. What about you?

John Hurley
John Hurley is a lawyer and small business owner. He lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts with his wife, Anne Goggin. They have three children, Caitlin, a field organizer for Barack Obama in Wisconsin, Conor, and Julia. Hurley is a Vietnam veteran and served with the U.S. Army (Platoon Leader, Co. B, 69th Engineer Battalion) in the Mekong Delta, 1967-1968. He is a member of Barack Obama's Veterans Policy Team. In 2003-2004 Hurley was National Director, Veterans for John Kerry. Hurley is 65 years old and is passionate about his family, Cape Cod, and the Boston Red Sox.

Ryan Southerland
An Oklahoma native, Ryan attended West Point and trained to become an Army Ranger. His first deployment to Iraq occurred in 2003, where he led a platoon in the first Stryker brigade in Iraq. Only six months after his return, Ryan volunteered for a second deployment in 2005 as an advisor to new Iraqi Army units, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He separated from active service in 2007 and is currently a law student at Stanford University.

Recap: Barack Obama Rallies 14,000 at Cashman Field in Las Vegas

Barack Obama outlined his plans to fix the economy and restore the American dream before a crowd estimated at 14,000 yesterday in Las Vegas.

Enthusiastic supporters lined up at Cashman Field hours beforehand. Spirits were high despite the long wait in the harsh sun. Union members in brightly-colored T-shirts posed together for pictures. News organizations conducted interviews. When asked why they supported Obama, a cheerful crowd yelled out their answers.

"A change of direction!"

"Someone who cares about us!"

"I just want to see the next president of the United States!"

When the laughter subsided, Elaine C. offered more specifics. "He needs our support," she declared. "I've been a registered Republican all my life, until this year. I'm sick of what's going on in our country. Things have to get better."

Recap: Actor Hill Harper Kicks Off Canvass in North Las Vegas

Volunteers were treated to a special canvass kickoff today at the North Las Vegas MLK Campaign for Change office when actor Hill Harper arrived to fire up volunteers.

The day started off with Field Organizer Ian Harris reminding everyone how essential it is to get out the vote in solidly blue North Las Vegas. He was followed by Precinct Captain Will Wilkens, who introduced Harper as "the next actor who might run for president."

Though many people recognize Harper as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes of CSI: NY, fewer realize that he was Barack Obama's classmate at Harvard Law School. After graduating magna cum laude from Brown University, he received a J.D. from Harvard Law and an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government. He's also authored two books: the award-winning Letters to a Young Brother and Letters to a Young Sister, which provide guidance to young African-American men and women.

Recap: Governor Bill Richardson Hosts Town Hall, Kicks Off Canvass in North Las Vegas

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson arrived in North Las Vegas today to rally Latinos and kick off canvasses for Senator Obama.

The day started off with an Economic Town Hall at The College of Southern Nevada. State Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen (D-11) previewed the morning's discussion with a recap of Las Vegas' economic plight. With foreclosures on every block, high gas prices, and a national economic downturn hurting tourism, he said, "We can't afford four more years." The good news? "If Latinos vote, Senator Obama will be President Obama." Kihuen exhorted everyone to talk to their neighbors, phone bank, and canvass for Obama. "Every person here represents hundreds of people. I'm asking you to make that effort."

Governor Richardson started the Town Hall on a personal note. After observing Obama on the campaign trail, "I saw something special in this man. I saw somebody who can bring this country together." Richardson argued that Obama has concrete plans for the economy, immigration reform, education, and the environment.

Recap: Reno Women's Tour

After rallying the Las Vegas volunteers on Saturday, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-9) swung by Reno to help us launch our own Women's Tour Canvass Kickoff. Jan has been a friend and colleague of Barack's for 12 years, first as a fellow legislator in the Illinois Statehouse, and now in the United States Congress.

At the kickoff, Jan reminded everyone that from universal health care, to equal pay for equal work, to a woman's right to choose, the stakes for women couldn't be higher this election season. And it's up to all of us to stand up and make our voices heard.

Afterward, Jan teamed up with Bonnie, a section leader and co-chair in the Reno area, to knock on doors together. "It was great fun," reports Bonnie. "I was impressed at how persistent she is. If no one answers, she pounds at the door. We even signed up two new volunteers!"

The day ended with a gathering of 50 women at the home of Alison Gaulden, Vice Chair of the Washoe County Democratic Party. Alison, Jan, and two-time Emmy Award-winning actress Heather Tom reinforced the message that the fight for reproductive rights continues in 2008.

Among the attendees were the Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, Senior State Senator Bernice Matthews, and Assemblywomen Sheila Leslie (District 27) and Debbie Smith (District 30).

Meet Marjorie and Sally: Precinct Captains Uniting for Change

Sally and Marjorie were neighbors and friends in Sparks, Nevada. So it was an odd coincidence when they found themselves representing opposing candidates during the Democratic Caucus: Sally was the precinct captain for Senator Clinton, while Marjorie was the precinct captain for Senator Obama.

But during the caucus, rather than let their political affiliations lead to animosity, Marjorie and Sally cooperated with each other. "We went to each other's caucus parties," recounts Sally (pictured left). Soon enough, when Marjorie reached an ardent Clinton supporter, she'd send the lead Sally's way. And Sally did the same for Marjorie. On caucus day, they helped set up each other's tables. After the caucus ended, Marjorie and Sally maintained their friendship and spent the next several months pursuing other interests.

Last Sunday, Marjorie was invited by Shoshana, her Field Organizer, to attend a house party.

"My first thought was to invite Sally," Marjorie said. Sally agreed to go with Marjorie. At the house party, Shoshana made clear that the most important role in the General Election, just as it was during the caucus, was that of the precinct captain. Shoshana asked Marjorie and Sally whether they'd be interested in becoming precinct captains.

"We knew we couldn't do it single-handedly," Marjorie said. "But when Shoshana asked, we looked at each other and said: we can do this together!"
