Yesterday, a group of Kids for Obama canvassed their neighborhood in South Minneapolis:

Holding handmade signs inscribed with things such as purple scribbles, “dinosaurs for Obama,” and “vote for these tiny futures” a group of seriously vociferous elementary-school-aged kids marched down 38th Street in South Minneapolis.

This election is so important, and we all have to do our part.

Midnight Madness -- 1 day to Change

Tonight, as today's tallies are being calculated and tomorrow's walk packets are being assembled, volunteers are out walking in strong Democratic neighborhoods leaving voting information on doorsteps and car windows.

It's called Midnight Madness, and it's an important part of our strategy to win tomorrow.

Across Minnesota today, hundreds of thousands of calls were made and even more doors were knocked, because tens of thousands of everyday Minnesotans volunteered and shared crucial voting infromation with Obama supporters in their community.

Tomorrow, we'll vote. But that's not going to be enough. We're going to need your help to get others to the polls.

No matter where you live, you can make phone calls, knock on doors, talk to your family & friends, and take the day off so you can volunteer. We need to be at full speed as we head through the finish line.

Volunteers at the "Get Out the Vote" Action Center in Hopkins made a short video to encourage local supporters to come on in and volunteer.

If you're watching any of the down-ticket races in Minnesota, an amazing thing is happening. Some areas, like Hopkins, that started off a deep red, have steadily gone in the last few months from red to pink to purple, and in the last few days, are even starting to look a little blue.

Check out their video, and help out for a few hours tonight or tomorrow to get Barack and the other DFL candidates elected tomorrow!

If you're a Minnesotan and haven't registered to vote yet, don't worry. You can register tomorrow at the polls and cast your vote for Barack & Joe!
... here's what you need:

A MN driver's license, MN state ID card, or tribal ID with your photo, name, current address, and signature.

A photo ID plus a current utility bill in your name.
Acceptable Photo IDs: MN driver's license or ID (with old address--not expired), Tribal ID without an address, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, MN student ID.
Utility Bills (due within 30 days of November 4th): Gas, electric, solid waste, sewer, phone (any kind: land line, cell, VOIP), TV (cable, satellite), Internet, rent statement with itemized utilities, current student fee statement.

If you don't have any of these things, that's okay! You just need a voucher -- someone registered to vote inyour precinct who can swear that you live there.

This election will be won or lost on the ground. It will be won or lost in the four days that we spend Getting Out The Vote.

Here's what the Pioneer Press wrote about the GOTV efort in Minnesota:

The Obama campaign will try to turn out more than 1 million Minnesota supporters that it has identified since June, said Jeff Blodgett, Obama's Minnesota campaign director.

The main target will be 500,000 sporadic and first-time voters, Blodgett said. The Obama campaign and the DFL are organizing volunteers to knock on each of those voters' doors four times on or before Election Day.

Starting Saturday, the campaign plans to put 10,000 volunteers on the streets statewide every day through Tuesday.

In addition, Blodgett said, the Obama campaign plans to phone 600,000 other Democratic voters who routinely vote or live in remote areas that are hard to reach on foot and urge them to vote. Other volunteers will go door to door in strong Democratic precincts that traditionally have low voter turnouts. The campaign also will send text messages to more than 13,000 mainly young voters.

The Obama campaign, which has 37 campaign offices around the state, started organizing its ground game in July, he said. Volunteers phoned registered voters to identify Obama supporters and persuade undecided voters to back the Democratic nominee.

The past 8 years of Republican rule has resulted in:

-Loss of American Jobs. The U.S.-China trade deficit has resulted in the loss of an estimated 2.3 million U.S. jobs.

-Multibillion dollar profits for oil companies. A 100 percent increase in your gas and home heating oil prices has accounted for this.

-Health Care costs and uninsurance for Americans. Over 47 million U.S. citizens now are uninsured under Bush/Republican Administration policies.

-Housing market crash. Home values have been driven down and families devastated financially because conservatives have looked away and abandoned government responsibility while corporations and banks have encouraged home equity loans, second, and sub-prime mortgages.

-Middle class has fallen further behind. Thanks to conservative economic policies, middle-class Americans are financially worse off than they were eight years ago when the Republicans were given the White House by the Supreme Court in a 5 to 4 party-line vote.

-The Iraq boondoggle. The American taxpayer is being charged over $10 billion dollars a month for the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations. In addition, over 4,000 American military have lost their lives and over 30,000 American soldiers have been maimed for life.

So, think about it. Do you really want 4 or 8 more years of conservative Republican failures? If you do, then vote for McCain/Palin and Norm Coleman.

ST. PAUL – Minnesota state director Jeff Blodgett held a press briefing today at 1:00 PM on the Obama Campaign for Change Get Out The Vote strategy. The briefing took place at “packet land,” the central location for assembling the material volunteers will use to accomplish the campaign’s aggressive goals during GOTV. Volunteers will be working at this location throughout the day.
The Obama Campaign for Change is organizing an aggressive, coordinated GOTV operation in a state known for grassroots get-out-the-vote efforts.
"We plan to work with a universe of 500,000 voters, voters who don't always vote in elections or they're new voters. We intend to knock on their doors, up to four times, between last Saturday up through election day."

This weekend will be the biggest on the ground effort of the campaign. It's the weekend before Election Day and we need all of our supporters on the ground in their community helping us to win the election.

Our on the ground effort in Minnesota has been incredible this past five months. Organizers are working day and night to win Minnesota, a must-win state for the Obama campaign. But to pull it off, they're counting on the time, energy, and passion of Obama supporters across the state who share their commitment to Barack's message of change.

Earlier today, I had the chance to talk for about a half an hour with Jeff Blodgett, the State Director for Barack Obama in Minnesota. Blodgett is the most distinguished DFL operative in Minnesota. In addition to being Paul Wellstone’s Campaign Manager, Blodgett was a senior adviser in the Klobuchar campaign, GOTV Director for the Kerry campaign in Minnesota and runs Wellstone Action, the not for profit group working to advance the causes that the late Sen. Wellstone fought for during his time in public life.

Blodgett gave me a run down of the Obama campaign’s GOTV plans in Minnesota. If I had to describe the effort in one word, it would be “wow.”

First things first, if you are not yet signed up to help during this last week, go to www.gotvforchange.com right now. You can enter your zip code and find the campaign action center closest to you, even sign up for a specific shift.

Now onto the nitty gritty details. With Blodgett in charge, you will not be surprised to find out that the Obama campaign in Minnesota has been heavily focused on a grassroots ground game. Since June 1, the Obama campaign has had 1 million conversations with voters in Minnesota. That’s stunning.

But, as the saying goes, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

There are 37 Obama offices in Minnesota. During the last four days of the campaign, that will expand to 130 GOTV action centers spread out from Grand Marais to East Grand Forks to Worthington to La Cresent. Why the massive expansion? The campaign has to accommodate some 20,000 volunteers who have already committed to helping during those final days (including 10,000 who have already signed up to help on Election Day alone!) To put this in perspective, in 2004 the Kerry campaign had about 10,000 volunteers during the final GOTV period and 5,000 volunteers on Election Day.

That’s right – the Obama campaign has doubled what the Kerry campaign did in Minnesota just four years ago.

Its also worth noting that the 20,000 volunteers are just what the Obama campaign brings to the table – it doesn’t count the Franken volunteers, the Madia volunteers and all the other great DFL campaigns that will bring volunteers to the coordinated GOTV effort.

So what will this army of volunteers be doing? The Obama campaign has identified a universe of 500,000 sporadic and new voters who they think are likely to vote for the DFL ticket if they get to the polls. Each one of these 500,000 people will be contacted 4 to 6 times between now and Election Day. The vast majority of these contacts will be made through doorknocking, though phone banking will be used in rural areas.

People say this every campaign, but there is no doubt it is true this time around: this is the largest GOTV effort in Minnesota history.

Everyone Canvasses, Even Barack!

Over the weekend, the Campaign for Change kicked off its "Get Out the Vote" effort with canvass and phonebanks at hundreds of locations across the state. Thousands of regular Minnesotans talked with their neighbors about the importance of voting next Tuesday for Barack Obama and DFL candidates up and down the ticket. They know how canvassing and getting out into the community can affect an election.

Talking to people in your area one-on-one, face-to-face, has been proven as the most effective way to persuade undecided voters -- even Barack does it.

The campaign is in the final push of the election with only one week left to pound the pavement for Barack. We need to double our organizing effort.

Thousands of supporters across the state still need to hear Barack's message of change. Help out in your neighborhood between Monday and Friday, and help us "Get Out the Vote" over the weekend!

More than 100 Suburban Leaders Endorse Barack Obama for President

People support Barack for many reasons. But the a theme that has been present since the first days of this campaign is change. Today, a group of suburban mayors, city councilors, county commissioners, school board members, and legislators announced their support of Barack Obama for President.

White Bear Lake Mayor Paul Auger explained how Barack & Joe are the candidates to bring the change Minnesota needs: "As suburban Minnesotans, we see the affects the Bush-McCain economic policies have had on our towns and communities. ST. PAUL – In a display of broad based support, more than 100 suburban leaders today announced their support of Barack Obama for president. These suburban leaders agree that Barack Obama and Joe Biden are uniquely qualified to deal with the growing challenges facing Minnesotans in this time of economic crisis.

“As suburban Minnesotans, we see the affects the Bush-McCain economic policies have had on our towns and communities,” White Bear Lake Mayor Paul Auger said. “Senator McCain’s unsteadiness in a time of crisis will not help restore this economy for working families. Senator Obama and Senator Biden have shown the judgment and vision to overcome the ongoing economic crisis and bring the change we need.”

As the economy continues to struggle, suburban leaders are facing unprecedented challenges managing the everyday concerns of Minnesotans living and raising families in the suburbs. The schools, public infrastructure and small businesses that suburban families rely on are all at great risk as the economy continues to falter.

“Suburban leaders are on the front lines trying to deal every day with the impact of this economic crisis – on our small businesses, schools and infrastructure,” Obama’s Minnesota state director Jeff Blodgett said. “John McCain has been erratic and unsteady since this crisis began – staggering from position to position and trying to change the subject away from the economy by launching false character attacks. As part owner of a struggling small business, one with innovative new ideas, I am desperately ready for change.
Over the past eight years I have seen and experienced how the rules are not made for small businesses and how innovation has been shut out by fear and control. Yet, it is only when we have economically healthy local communities that we will rebuild our national economy.
I have certainly seen that money does not trickle down, but I guarantee that it will work its way up. If small innovative businesses get help and get healthy, our economy will grow because others will start asking, “What did you do”?

"We remember our friends"

On a cold night this past January, Barack stood on a stage in New Hampshire and gave a speech that has since inspired millions of Americans to get involved in politics again.

It inspired students, mothers and fathers, grandparents, union workers, waitresses, teachers, and many others to get involved in this grassroots campaign for change.

But grassroots, community-driven politics is not something new to Minnesota, and this weekend we remember a great man, who was called the "conscience of the Senate."

Below is an email I recieved from Wellstone Action! this morning:

Saturday, October 25th marks the 6th anniversary of the plane crash that took the lives of Paul and Sheila Wellstone, Marcia Wellstone Markuson, Mary McEvoy, Tom Lapic, and Will McLaughlin. We pause to remember these six wonderful and talented individuals and to hold them in our hearts.

We remember their passion for social justice and their commitment to transforming our world for the common good. We dedicate our work to their memory, knowing that they would be proud of all that we collectively have accomplished.

Before the caucuses, Barack came to Minnesota and shared the following:

Some of you know that when I first got to the United States Senate, I opened up the door of the desk where I was assigned. And it has the names of some of the greater senators who have served. They carved their names, in their own hand, into the desk drawer.
One of those names was somebody who shared with me this belief that change doesn't happen from the top down. A guy named Paul Wellstone.
A guy who helped to build a movement here in Minnesota because he believed in you the way I believe in you. And this is part of that movement for change.

Ed in Willmar writes to The West Central Tribune about the facts of John MCCain's record:

If you haven’t made your presidential pick, you may want to consider the following:

First, Editor and Publisher, the newspaper industry journal, has been tallying the newspaper endorsements for each candidate. As of Oct. 20, Barack Obama had received 114 endorsements to John McCain’s 40. Twenty-six of the newspapers endorsing Obama chose Bush in 2004.

One newspaper, the Chicago Tribune, a conservative paper whose first leader was a founder of the Republican Party, has endorsed a Democrat for president for the first time since its beginning in 1847. The full endorsement is on the newspaper’s Web site. Here is a highlight:

“We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party’s nominee for president. We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready."

Second, McCain has criticized Obama for wanting to “redistribute wealth” because Obama wants to rescind the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. McCain ignores the redistribution of wealth that occurred during the Bush years. Census Bureau data shows that the number of people living in poverty in the United States increased by 5,695,000 between 2000 and 2007. Simultaneously, according to Forbes magazine, the number of U.S. billionaires increased by 200 to a total of 472. Think about it. We are not talking a few million. We are talking one thousand million dollars, more money then anyone can possibly spend, but McCain wants to protect billionaires from paying more taxes.

Third, check out “McCain’s Miserable Record of Not Supporting America’s Troops and Veterans” at www.vetvoice.com. You will learn that McCain, a veteran and POW, claims to be a friend of veterans but has an abysmal record on veterans’ issues. He has repeatedly voted against improved veterans’ benefits, including increased health care, educational benefits, and mental health counseling. Don’t ask me why a veteran fails his comrades, but McCain clearly has.

Liz, the daughter of Irish immigrants, is one of the nation's most reverred Celtic musicians, often appearing with Daithi, who is an accomplished guitarist in his own right.

Making Higher Education Accessible to All Americans

On Monday morning, Michelle Obama hosted a conference call with college newspapers across the country to discuss the Obama-Biden plan for higher education and the importance of the youth vote. You can read more about her statements and see what students at the University of Colorado thought of the Obama-Biden plan.

We were planning to compare the Obama-Biden plan with John McCain’s plan for higher education, but he doesn’t seem to have much of one. His stated plan would seek to simplify the application process for existing tax benefits and financial aid, but offers no new aid proposals or plans to make college more affordable. The Colorado Daily reported that, when contacted yesterday, "McCain campaign officials declined to discuss their candidate's stance on higher-ed issues."

That’s definitely not the change we need.

In today’s economy, a college education is more important than ever. College trains the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow, and can get today’s young people on track for achieving their own American dreams.

That’s why Barack Obama and Joe Biden have proposed creating new programs to make college more affordable for every student.

The Obama-Biden plan creates a universal and fully-refundable $4,000 Opportunity Tax Credit. This credit will cover two-thirds the cost of college tuition at the average public state university and make community college almost free for most students. In exchange for the tax credit, students would be required to contribute 100 hours of community service. In this way, the Obama-Biden plan ensures that not only do American students get a great education, they will also learn the value of serving their community.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden will also streamline the financial aid process, removing key hurdles that keep students from the aid they need. Instead of filling out a cumbersome federal financial aid form, parents would simply be able to check a box on their tax forms authorizing their tax information be used to apply for financial aid.

Obama-Biden also plan to make college more affordable by expanding Pell grants for low-income students and ensuring that Pell grants keep up with the rising costs of college inflation.

Republican Former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson Endorses Barack Obama for President

At a press conference at the Capitol this morning, former Republican Governor Arne Carlson endorsed Barack Obama as the best candidate to be the next president of the United States.

More than 100 Minnesotans attended his endorsement speech, in which he cited the stark contrast between Barack's steady leadership through economic crisis and Senator McCain's erratic, uncertain low-road campaign.

From the Obama campaign's press release:

Carlson, who supported John McCain during the Republican primary process, was joined at the event by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar who was campaigning across Minnesota for Obama’s Campaign for Change on Thursday.

Carlson served as Minnesota governor from 1991-1999 and served three terms as state auditor from 1979-1991. He lives with his wife in Plymouth, MN.

“Barack Obama is the only candidate who can bring this country together to get the economy working again for middle-class families,” Carlson said. “I was hoping for a real discussion between serious candidates about how to fix this economic crisis. It had been my hope that Senator McCain would have seen the series of challenges we face as an opportunity to lead the Republican Party with fresh ideas. But, he hasn’t done that.

In Hibbing last night, Hillary Clinton drew on her years of public service and made a lucid observation on the choice Minnesotans have in this election.

This election is really coming down to one simple slogan. It's a slogan that embodies what Democrats stand for, what we fight for, what we believe: "Jobs, baby, jobs!" That's what it's about and that's why we need Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

With Democrats in the White House and in the Congress, we will end the tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas, we're going to start creating jobs in America again. We did it before and we can do it again.

Barack Obama has a plan to jumpstart the American economy, provide middle class tax relief, and provide quality, affordable healthcare to every American. This fact, and the reality that on every one of these issues John McCain is disturbingly out of touch with middle class families, was not lost on Hillary:

Senator McCain has repeatedly said that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

Well, maybe they are if you're looking through rose-colored glasses. But if you're living with both feet on the ground

and you're going in and out of people's homes and you're listening to what's on your minds, there isn't any way you could reach that conclusion.

But to George Bush and John McCain the middle class isn't fundamental, it's ornamental. They don't understand that if you don't have a strong and prosperous middle class, we will not have a strong and prosperous America.

"The evidence is clear," continued Hillary, a champion for working families in her own right, "Barack Obama and the Democrats are for you. And that's why I hope you will be for the DFL candidates up and down the ballot to delivver the change we need."

Folks in Minnesota are struggling to cope with a failing economy and looking for real leadership from the next President. Since President Bush has taken office, health care costs have risen 4.3 times faster than average wages in Minnesota, and over 430,000 Minnesota residents – and over 45 million nationally – lack health insurance today.

The situation in Minnesota is just a microcosm of what's happening across the country, a situation which will only get worse if John McCain is allowed to continue the failed policies of the last eight years.

That's why we have to take action to prevent that from happening:

There isn't anybody who really thinks we could survive the next 4 years if they're like the last 8 years and recognize our country. The income inequality will continue to expand, people will start losing their hope and their belief in the American dream.

I know that you probably have friends and even families, coworkers and neighbors who are not yet decided; who may even be thinking of voting for the McCain-Palin ticket.

That dog don't hunt anymore. You can't keep rewarding the same bad policies and expect to get anything better.

"So I hope each and everyone of you will go out and talk to those who are yet undecided. Maybe try to persuade those you think are heading in the wrong direction," added Hillary.

With less than two weeks until Election Day, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Obama’s Minnesota state director Jeff Blodgett will make four campaign stops across Minnesota to make the case for change to undecided Minnesota voters.

Events will be held in St. Paul, St Cloud, Grand Rapids and Virginia to highlight Senator Obama’s comprehensive plans to restore the economy and lead our country in the 21st century.

The day’s events will kick off at 10 AM at the State Capitol in St. Paul on Thursday. With undecided voters making their decisions over the next few days, these events will speak to independent voters who are concerned with the direction of our economy and are fed up with the viscous attacks and smear tactics being used in the campaign.

Yesterday, Iron Range gave the type of hometown welcome its famous for when nearly 5000 people welcomed Senator Hillary Clinton to Hibbing.

Folks started lining up as early as 3 o'clock for their chance to hear Hillary outline Barack's vision for the kind of change Minnesota needs.

As Hillary looked out at the audience in the Hibbing Memorial Arena, she noted that the folks gathered there were "people who have been at the core of making America safe and making America work."

Just as the iron ore that made the steel enabled us to win these conflicts, Minnesota's Iron Range casts the votes that made the difference in statewide campaigns that elected John F. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale.

You have given more than your iron ore, your steel, and your votes. You have sacrificed for America... Northeastern Minnesota had the highest per capita enlistment rate in WWII, one of the highest in other conflicts after the Great War, and many of you, your children, and loved ones have served and proudly serve today. Our nation owes you a great gratitude. The working men and women of Northeastern Minnesota--the miners, the loggers, the building trades, the steelworkers, the teachers, the laborers--people who have worked for yourselves and your family, your community, and your country.

And you deserve better than what you've been delivered the last eight years by the Republican leadership in Washington.

Among the veterans in the crowd was retired U.S. Marine Breanna Osterhoudt, who wants to see change in the veterans benefits.

"We'll, I'm here because I'm a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton and Obama. I served four years in the United States Marine Corps, and I think we need a change.

Hillary spoke of the important role the next thirteen days play in determining whether the country continues down the same course or charts a new course in a new direction:

One-on-one conversations with voters could be what wins the election for Barack. A lot of voters are still undecided and need to know the change Barack is going to bring to Washington.

Most importantly, they need to know why you support Barack. By taking the time to talk to someone and tell them your story you could persuade someone to vote for Barack.

One of the easiest ways to talk to other people is by using our online Neighbor-to-Neighbor tool. This allows you to call voters in Minnesota and talk to them about the issues you care about. Whether it's the economy, education, social security or the war in Iraq, many other Americans are struggling and facing the same situations that you are. Tell them why you are voting for Barack and how we can fix the problems this country is facing.

Volunteers in neighboring Wisconsin recently recorded a short video with some tips on how to phonebank. It's simple and easy, even if you've never phonebanked before.

Call time (suggested time to call voters) is Monday thru Friday 5-9pm CST.

Across Minnesota, something is stirring. Folks are tired of the failed policies of the last eight years, and hungry to see America move in a new direction.

Jeanie from Kandiyohi writes to the West Central Tribune:

A couple bought a duplex house. After a few years the husband died. Then the wife had to reside and reroof the house. She said the person who handled it lied to her and to the banker. When it was refinanced she owed twice as much as the house originally cost.

Her renter fell down some steps at work. Because they would not pay her workman’s comp, she came to owe $6,000. At that time she was asked to leave. Her son and his friend rented the house.

Then the wife found out that she had lymphoma. This cancer is not curable but can go into remission. Although she had insurance where she worked, she had to pay so much to the hospital that she was behind.

At first she figured she would die but then she went into remission. It was shortly before her time off the job, fighting to recover would have been too long and she would have lost her job.
She did go back to work but gave up on keeping the house and quit making payments.

Then her daughter with three children lost her job at Head Start because the program was shut down. She came to the house to live. Her mother already had plans to move into her sister’s small house but the daughter has decided to stay there until she is kicked out. She is now working at Target for $7 an hour.

Her son graduates next spring so she is trying to stay in that school district until then.

We need to change things after the last eight years of war, and the rich getting richer and the middle class getting poor.

Please, please change the dynamics of this country by voting for Barack Obama for president.

Focus on the Issues: Women's Issues

Barack Obama has led as a champion of women’s rights – from advocating fair pay, to preventing violence against women, to protecting the right to choose.

Despite decades of progress, American women still make only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Barack supported the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would allow women to sue for pay discrimination if they discovered they were paid less because of their gender. Barack will also help women in the workplace by expanding paid sick leave, giving women the ability to take a few days to stay home if their children get sick.

Barack has been a tireless advocate of preventing violence against women. Barack introduced legislation to combat domestic violence by providing services to families affected by domestic violence. Barack also supported the landmark Violence Against Women Act, originally sponsored by Joe Biden, which establishes sexual assault services programs and helps police and communities combat domestic abuse.

Finally, Barack is committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose, and is a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade. He co-sponsored legislation to expand access to contraception, health information and preventive services to help reduce unintended pregnancies.

John McCain’s record speaks for itself on women’s issues. McCain wants to overturn Roe v. Wade and would ban all abortions – even in cases of rape or incest. McCain has opposed number domestic violence bills, including the Violence Against Women Act, which has saved the lives of countless women. And McCain opposed legislation that would help women receive equal pay for equal work.

But don’t take our word for it -- do your research. The facts speak for themselves: Barack is the smart choice for America's women.

Earlier this month, Hillary, Joe, his wife Jill, and President Clinton appeared together in Scraton. Here's what Joe said about Hillary:

Barack has been campaigning for 20 months now. For 20 months he has traveled across the country, from state to state, talking to voters and talking about the change that he will bring to Washington. He'll continue traveling and campaigning over the next 16 days, but now it comes down to us.

When Michelle was in Minnesota last week, she explained to the gathered crowd that while Barack has gotten us 85% of the way there, the rest is up to us. We have to knock on doors, call voters, volunteer and most importantly, vote.

We are still in a fight, and the next weeks are going to be crucial to our Get Out The Vote effort. Which is why we need our supporters on the ground to be working as hard as they can over the next 17 days to win.

We learned on Thursday that voters in Minnesota in key battleground states are receiving automated phone calls from John McCain's campaign, spreading some of the most vile smears of this election. But these desperate "robocalls" say more about John McCain and his campaign than they do about Barack.

It was McCain himself who denounced these underhanded and cowardly tactics as "hate calls" after a rash of them helped sink his primary campaign in 2000. The perpetrator behind those attacks: George W. Bush.

If you or your family and friends have received one of these calls, you can help us fight back by reporting it. Documenting these calls is the only way the full extent of the McCain campaign's negative tactics will ever be known by voters across the country.

In talking about the election endgame, Stepen Rose from the Huffington Post wrote:

If Barack Obama becomes president, it will be because of grass roots organization. The people who will make the difference on November 4 are the paid and volunteer organizers of the Obama-Biden campaign.

It will be the work you do on the ground these next 17 days that will make the difference, because honest, person to person contact is more powerful than a deceptive, automated phonecall. But as FiveThirtyEight reported while on the road in western Pennsylvania:

From what we've seen, this IS the McCain ground campaign. Robocalls count as "touches" on voters, as do direct mail pieces such as this one. As David Plouffe said in today's fundraising letter to supporters, "These tactics are all that the McCain campaign and their allies have left."

St. Cloud Times Endorsement: Our view: Obama and Biden are best choice for America

This is one of several Our Views offering the Times Editorial Board’s opinion on Election Day races and issues. Endorsements reflect the majority view of the board. Members are Times Media President and Publisher Bill Albrecht, Executive Editor John Bodette, Opinion Page Editor Randy Krebs, Times Media employee representative Mark Hessler and community representative Dorrie Larison.

Central Minnesotans who see all things through red or blue lenses long ago decided their votes for president. Knowing that, the past six months — and especially the next two weeks — are about determining which candidate will best serve moderate voters and middle-class Americans.

We believe that’s Barack Obama.

While both he and John McCain propose some solutions lacking the details that should be evident after an almost-two-year campaign, Obama delivers a more consistent, less partisan message. Most importantly, he offers a vision decidedly different from what’s come from the White House the past eight years.

McCain, despite his heroic military record and self-proclaimed maverick label, has a senatorial voting record and presidential platform that do little to inspire confidence in substantial change.

And while there are plenty of issue-based differences upon which to base decisions, we must note that McCain’s recent decision to ramp up negative personal attacks are far removed from the spirit of the political principles he seemed to embrace and reflect up to this point in his career.

Still, the issues are what should help voters decide on Election Day. Among those that we believe would appeal to moderates and yield substantive changes are Obama’s economic plan, especially its focus on tax cuts for low- and moderate-income families. There is little argument that the thrust of McCain’s plan rests in continuing tax breaks for the wealthiest 1 percent.

Both candidates also have campaigned heavily on health care reform, but the majority of nonpartisan analysis of each plan seems to conclude that applying precise cost and benefit measures is difficult because both lack details. Amid that, the focus probably needs to be on providing affordable access to middle- and low-income Americans — something that seems more likely (but, yes, expensive) under Obama’s plan.

As for overall government spending, the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget determined Obama and McCain are proposing policies that would increase the federal deficit. And yes, Obama’s efforts come with a higher price tag and potential need to increase some taxes. But analysts also note that McCain’s plans would require cutting government spending 25 percent — something clearly unrealistic given the past eight years.

Finally, the choice of running mates must be noted. In Joe Biden, Obama picked a person whose credentials primarily address potential concerns about foreign policy under an Obama administration. In Sarah Palin, McCain picked a person whose sole mission is clearly to inflame already-partisan crowds leading up to Election Day.

Moderate Americans should recognize the impact behind those approaches and elect Obama. He’s the best chance at changing the direction of the White House, perhaps the country, in the next four years.

I've been phonebanking Minnesota Latinos on my.barackobama.com today, and I can report that it is definitely worth it. Sure, you get your share of wrong numbers, and plenty of message machines (I leave messages in English, and make sure to mention Al Franken). And when you get a real person who speaks English, they mostly have their mind made up or don't want to talk to you.
But when you get a real person who prefers Spanish, they tend to be really open. These are busy people, and they don't pay a lot of attention to politics. I am a bit wonky in my presentation, I'm not a salesman, but just a few facts about Obama and McCain are enough to get people to say "well then, it sounds as if I'll be voting for Obama" every time.

American Hunters and Shooters Association founder: Obama will protect gun rights

Ray Schoenke, the founder and president of the American Hunters and Shooters Association, is in Minnesota talking to rural Minnesotans about Barack's respect of the rights of sportsmen and women and the Obama-Biden plan to restore the economy.

From the Bemidji Pioneer:

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama won’t take away Americans’ guns, says the head of the American Hunters and Shooters Association.

“We’re a gun rights organization and we are stating Obama’s not going to take away your guns,” Ray Schoenke, who is founder and president of the AHSA, said in an interview Thursday night.

Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a Washington, D.C., total ban on handguns as unconstitutional. In overturning the ban, Justice Antonin Scalia said that “the individual right is confirmed, that law-abiding citizens have the right to own a gun,” Schoenke said.

“That pretty well set the issue aside,” he said. “He basically said government cannot confiscate your guns. Congress cannot enact laws that can take your guns away. Which means Obama can’t take your guns away, nor can McCain. That whole issue is over with.”

Coming up with laws for rural American and for urban centers “takes away their fear issue,” he said of the NRA. “To me, it’s misrepresentation, distortions and lies. It’s the only thing they have. It’s unfortunate that McCain and Palin buy into it.”

“The gun rights issue is behind us and conservation is important,” he said. “Obama is ahead of McCain, and I think he’s clearly ahead when it comes to the economy. That’s why I strongly urge hunters and shooters throughout Minnesota to look to Obama and support him.”

Rather than relying on attack ads and distractions, Barack is focused on dealing with the economic challenges Americans are facing.

Barack will give tax cuts to 95% of middle class families. He'll end the tax breaks for companies shipping jobs overseas, and put them where they belong by cutting taxes on small businesses that grow local economies.

Albert Lea Tribune Endorses Barack Obama for President

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama deserves your vote for president of the United States.

His vision for a better country includes nation building — the United States of America. His opponent, Arizona Sen. John McCain, has a motto of “Country First,” but his policies seem to be more like country club first.

Obama wants to implement domestic policies that make a difference in the lives of ordinary people, such as improving the inefficient health care system, taking proper care of veterans, ending the war in Iraq and bolstering the federal student loan program.

His plan for taxes makes the wealthy Americans shoulder their fair burden for government and lessens the burden on everyday folks. The past 30 years has pushed more and more tax burden onto the middle class, while oil companies, drug companies and other special interests line their pockets. It’s time for that to stop. It’s time for a president who comes from lower- or middle-class people, a president who relates to average Americans.

McCain says he is different than President Bush. To be sure, he is. Either McCain or Obama would be better than Bush. No matter who wins, America is better off.

Even so, McCain represents corporate interests. He still calls for tax cuts for the rich and thinks it will solve the economic crisis. Even wealthy investor Warren Buffet favors Obama’s economic plan.

Further, electing Obama also sends a message to the rest of the world that Americans want to heal the international rift caused by the go-it-alone Bush administration.

Look at leadership, too. Obama mulls choices before making them. In Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, Obama picked a vice president. McCain made a rushed and amateurish choice in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. He picked a running mate, not a vice president.

McCain once seemed his own man but allowing the Karl Rove gang into his campaign only has made him look like part of the same Republican machine that is to blame for the problems of the past eight years. What happened to straight talk?

Obama leads a campaign staff that works well as a team and has come a long way in two years. He is a natural leader.

It seems some of the great presidents have reached across party lines and even appointed members of the other party in their cabinets. Two are Ronald Reagan and Franklin Roosevelt. Obama seems willing to do the same. This Democrat is not as partisan as past candidates in the national stage. He is the right choice for America.

ST. PAUL – U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton will hold a public rally for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign next Tuesday evening on the Iron Range.
Sen. Clinton will speak with Minnesotans about her trust in Sen. Obama’s steady leadership and ability to turn around our economic crisis. Sen. Clinton will discuss the current crisis and the leadership required to bring the change we need.

More details will be announced in the coming days.

"Me and My Moma Are For Obama"

Last weekend, a group of "Mamas for Obama" used the my.barackobama.com grassroots organizing tool to set up a playdate with their kids at their neighborhood park.

From the beginning, this campaign has been about everyday people stepping up to make change happen in their own communities. As Barack said today in Londonberry, NH:

John McCain thinks this campaign is all about me – but the truth is, this campaign is about you. Your jobs. Your health care. Your retirement. Your children’s future. That’s what this election is about. That’s what I’m fighting for. Because I can take 3 more weeks of these attacks from John McCain, but the American people can’t take four more years of the same failed policies and the same divisive politics. That’s why I’m running for President of the United States.

Barack was raised by a single mother who put herself through school, followed her passion for helping others, and taught Barack that there are no barriers to success if you are willing to work for it.

His grandmother, who also helped to raise him, worked on a bomber assembly line during World War II. Michelle, Barack's wife, has been described as "the rock of the Obama family." She and Barack want their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, to grow up in an America where both work and family are part of the American Dream.

All of Barack's accomplishments have been made possible because of these women. And it is because of these women that Barack fights for women's rights. He fights for healthcare and education, support for working parents and an insistence on equality.

Change is coming! Enough is enough! I am tired of trying to make it from paycheck to paycheck only to find myself out of money before my next paycheck — struggling to get my sick child to his medical appointments in the Cities and putting food in his stomach, a roof over his head, clothes on his back and warmth in the cold. My child comes before me in anything! My needs are not being met because I am struggling to give him what he needs. One income in a household can’t possibly make ends meet. My husband works many overtime hours including Saturdays so we can try to make it. And it is not enough. I am disabled and can’t work, but I had to get a job this summer to help and then I find out that I am over-doing it and making myself weaker and sicker. I have had to set my illness aside and peel myself out of bed in the morning to go to work even if the pain is unbearable. I invite you to walk in my shoes for a while.

My husband and I have needs, too, but we have to put our needs aside to get our son what he needs and to pay the bills. You don’t see us together out in the evening because we can’t afford to go. We have lived here for six years now and we like our little town but we have yet to go out to the movies or to dine in one of the eateries or go to mingle with our friends and neighbors in our community because we can’t afford it. We don’t even have winter coat. But we don’t mind as long as our child has what he needs.

Our economy needs help, people that have invested their money or have 401(k)s (us included) can probably kiss their investments goodbye for now. Health insurance needs an overhaul so people with pre-existing conditions can still be covered and so that everyone can afford to have coverage. Social Security needs to be saved so when we retire it is there for us and our children. Medicare needs to be changed so all of our seniors and disabled can pay for their medications and see their doctors as needed. Something needs to be done so all of our children can go to college because college tuition and expenses are through the roof. Our children’s schools and education needs help. Something needs to be done with the meth, drug and alcohol problems that are a plague on our society. Do you want me to continue?

With all the promises that both candidates are making and lies about each other, who knows what and who to believe anymore. But I know one thing, I am and have been ready for a change!

Barack said it himself: This election is all about the issues. Minnesotans are hungry for change – for better jobs, for more financial security, for a cleaner environment. And one of the most important issues in this election is Social Security and providing for our senior citizens.

With insecure retirement savings, and the skyrocketing costs of health care, housing, and energy costs, our seniors need help.

Barack Obama has a plan to help America’s senior citizens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden will protect Social Security and make sure our seniors can afford to retire. The Obama-Biden plan will expand retirement savings program and create new pension programs. And Barack’s plan will eliminate income tax altogether for seniors who make less than $50,000 per year.

The Obama-Biden plan will protect and strengthen Medicare, and allow the federal government to negotiate for cheaper drugs for the Medicare program, so seniors can afford their pills. Finally, Obama will increase funding for LIHEAP, to help seniors pay their winter heating bills.

John McCain has a different view of Social Security and seniors. McCain wants to privatizes Social Security, taking a gamble with the Social Security system on the stock market. And McCain voted against much needed-increases in Medicare funding, taking away many seniors’ only access to health care.

Minnesota Artists for Obama

With those words, Marian Moore opened up a night of musical entertainment, dance, and revelry at The Lab in Minneapolis hosted by Minnesota Artists for Obama.

[Tonight is the product of] three ordinary citizens who thought this election was too important to just stay on the sidelines and see what happens. So they put in their time and resources to make this happen.
The presidency for Barack Obama is within reach, and we have just 23 days. After that, the window's closed. What can we give and what can we do to make sure we wake up happy on November 5th?

The fundraiser, organized by Susan, Mary, and Jan, demonstrates the belief in the power of coming together at the grassroots level, a fundamental tenet of Barack's campaign for change.

The 250 folks who gathered to show their support for Barack, enjoyed musical performances by Adam Levy of the Honeydogs, Prairie Home Companion regulars Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard, and John Munson and Matt Wilson of The Twilight Hours. Rhythmic Circus, a local tap dancing troupe, also performed.

Jeff Blodgett, the Obama campaign's Minnesota State Director, spoke with passion about Barack Obama:

The McCain campaign keeps asking the question, "Who is Barack Obama?"
But we know who he is, we know the answer. We know that Barack Obama is a man who has devoted his entire life to his community, his country, and that he will be a president who will make the economy work for the American people again.
Barack Obama is someone who has tapped into something we're feeling right now in this room--people are ready for change. They're tired of divisive politics and people want real leadership.
And while some want to create fear by asking these questions, our campaign here in Minnesota is focused on talking to people about the issues. Because that's what the people want to hear--what is the next president going to do to help me and my family?
Minnesotans deserve better than they're getting from John McCain and his campaign.
And on November 4th, we're going to make sure they get it.

From day one, this campaign has been driven by the everyday people, like Susan, Mary, and Jan, who, instead of sitting idly by, stood up and acknowledged their responsibility to make change happen in their community.

Reflections on Canvassing

Last week, we posted a video of two friends, Anya & Emily, canvassing in Minneapolis.

Both Anya and Emily have made a personal commitment to volunteer for at least three hours each week to make sure Barack wins Minnesota on November 4th.

In front of a crowd of more than 4500 in St. Paul yesterday, Michelle Obama said that, for her, this is not just politics. "It's personal. It's personal for me, it's personal for all of us now."

Hard-working people who don't want government to solve all their problems. Folks in this country aren't asking for much. They just want to be able to do what my dad did for me -- get up, go to work every day and earn a decent living.

And from my vantage point, as a wife, as a mother, as a daughter, the choice is clear. There's only one candidate who is speaking at all to the issues that I care about.

Michelle's story is the American story. Michelle grew up on the South Side of Chicago, attended public schools, and took used scholarships and loans to pay her way through college and law school. After a few years practicing corporate law, she returned to the South Side of Chicago to give back to the city she loves and to help others serve their communities as the executive director of a non-profit.

Michelle reminded folks that Barack was raised by a single mother and his grandparents. And while they didn't have much money, they taught him to believe in the promise of America.

I can't speak for anyone else, but Barack Obama gets it. And he doesn't get it in some philosophical, theoretical way. He gets it because he's lived it.

"Don't we deserve leaders who get it?" asked Michelle.

A few days ago, Joe Biden sent out an email about the McCain campaign's decision to attack Barack with outright lies, saying "I've heard some pretty unspeakable things in the past few days -- deeply offensive smears that we'll hear over and over again until Election Day."

John McCain and Governor Palin are setting a new low in presidential politics with their dishonorable campaign.

Barack and I are out there every day fighting back. But we need your help.

Kristi echoed Joe's remarks on her my.barackobama.com blog:

As I watched the news this morning, I was frustrated to the extent the McCain camp has now turned from the real issues to again focus on smear tactics and negativity. What we need is positive change and a President that will focus on the needs of the national and global community. I know it is probably a sign of desperation but those of us for Obama must continue to stay strong in getting the word out and continuing the momentum to election day!

As Election Day gets closer, we can only expect the McCain campaign's tactics to get uglier.

That's why it's vital that you sign up to volunteer before Election Day.

With just 25 days left before the election, the Minnesota Campaign for Change is focusing on spreading Barack and Joe's message of change to undecided voters across the state. Tens of thousands of volunteers across the state, helping out at 31 offices across the state, are talking to their friends and neighbors about the Obama-Biden plan to restore the American economy.

From The Mankato Free Press:

For all the debates, for all the television ads, for all the political rallies and news stories, in the end the presidential election will be decided by the work done in the basement of 220 E. Main St. — along with 30 other Campaign for Change field offices throughout Minnesota and thousands more in battleground states across America.

Nick Meyer is convinced of it.

“I think ultimately it is going to come down to the volunteer work and the grass-roots politics,” said the regional field director for the Obama campaign in southern Minnesota. “It’s all going to come down to the sheer number of people we can talk to.”

The Obama campaign’s St. Paul headquarters says the Mankato office has been responsible for 60,000 attempted voter contacts in the past three months.

They have high-tech computerized voter identification systems, that the campaign won’t talk about at all, which pinpoint prospective supporters and the issues that matter most to them.

They have low-tech bumper stickers, campaign buttons and yard signs (the campaign estimates that more than 600 yard signs have been passed out by the Mankato office). They have brochures and position papers and fliers.

They have Meyer, an Illinois native who circulates between Mankato, Rochester and Northfield, coordinating the Obama efforts in the two congressional districts.

They have a couple of paid staffers assigned to the Mankato office, which allows the office to have long and regular hours — open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 9 p.m. Sundays.

They have daily activities, whether it’s door-knocking or phone banks or debate-watching parties.

Most importantly, Meyer said, they have an ever-growing legion of volunteers.

DFL challenges McCain health care plan

There’s been a concerted, and apparently nationwide, effort by the campaign of presidential candidate Barack Obama to focus attention on the health care reform plan offered by Republican nominee John McCain.

In Mankato, Obama was represented by state Sen. Kathy Sheran of Mankato and state House Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Paul Thissen of Minneapolis. The two Democrats said Obama’s plan is similar to proposals developed by a bipartisan group of stakeholders in Minnesota while McCain’s plan is a radical deregulation of the current health care system.

“This is an issue that’s truly a defining difference (between the presidential contenders),” Thissen said.

Today, the Obama-Biden campaign released a new 30 second TV ad, “Taketh”, which highlights healthcare in the debate last night. In the ad, which features footage from the debate, Obama tells Americans the truth about John McCain’s healthcare plan, explaining that McCain pays for his tax credit by taxing your health care benefits, for the first time ever. "So what one hand giveth," Barack explained last night, "the other hand taketh away.”

"Taketh" will air across the country on national cable beginning today.

In the ad, which features footage from the debate, Joe Biden sheds light on the truth about John McCain’s health care plan, telling America that McCain pays for his health care plan by taxing your health care benefits, and he calls that, “the ultimate bridge to nowhere.”

Letter: Obama will bring real change

Change. That is why I have been supporting Obama for president. People would ask me why. Eight years of failed policy and Republican administration, that’s why. More of the same is not what we need right now. Obama brings excitement, energy and freshness, but watching his acceptance speech, it became clear to me why I really like him. It really clicked in my mind. It’s simple, because anything is possible.
In America and around the world for that matter, there is a belief that anything is possible, that you can do anything or become anything as long as you are dedicated, motivated, willing to work hard, never give up and have a little faith. They tell us as kids and we tell our children the same, “Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.” And we tell them that because anything is possible.
Although Obama didn’t say it, that is what his speech meant to me. I mean if a black man can become president of this great nation, anything is possible. I can do anything, but more importantly, my sons can do anything. There is no limit.
As soon as the speech was over, I went and hugged my boys and reminded them how much I love them and that they can become anything they want. For a while now, my youngest has been saying he wants to be a scientist. When he first told me I was as proud as I’ve ever been and I told him he could.
For me, Obama’s candidacy, but especially his acceptance speech, reminds me how true that is. I said, “You know what Joe, you can become a scientist and you can do great things.” And he can, I mean after all this is the greatest county on Earth, the United States of America. And I believe it will always be that way, that anything will always be possible, and I strongly believe that if elected, Obama will do more to ensure that every American, man or woman, young or old, no matter what race or ethnicity, will have the resources available to them so that will always be the American way.

Minnesota Latino Community Demonstrates Unprecedented Organizing Strength

Earlier this afternoon, Minnesota Latinos for Obama launched a major effort to raise money for a national Latino GOTV operation designed to engage and turnout millions of new Latino voters.

ST. PAUL – Today, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson joined Minnesota state Sen. Patricia Torres Ray and hundreds of members of Minnesota's Latino community for a reception at the Landmark Center in St. Paul to kick off a major push to raise more than $100,000 as Minnesota's contribution to a national Latino voter turnout program that will engage millions of new Latino voters for Barack Obama's Campaign for Change. This unprecedented financial haul is a symbol of the growing Latino organizing strength in Minnesota and the strong base of support Senator Obama has mobilized among Minnesota Latinos.

Governor Richardson spoke to hundreds of supporters about Senator Obama's plans to strengthen families, restore our economy for working Minnesotans and build strong communities.

Spokesman-Recorder: Obama campaign attracts committed young voters

The Minnestoa Spokesman-Recorder sat down with Dominick Washington, the Obama campaign's Minnesota Political Director, to talk about the importance of young people to our grassroots movement for change:

The Barack Obama presidential campaign is setting records in promoting grassroots participation and involvement in the political process. The early caucus and primary attendances were formidable throughout the country. Some polling places reported having run out of ballots and turning people away.

It has even given rise to discussion regarding the extension of voting time on a national scale. It can hardly be denied that much of the voting increase was attributable to the abundance of young and other first-time voters stimulated by the Barack Obama campaign.

Obama’s overnight rise to popularity and appeal among the young has not been seen in American politics since the early sixties when “Clean Gene” McCarthy and his young college followers successfully forced Lyndon Johnson to abandon seeking a second term in the White House. The difference in those incidents and now is that McCarthy’s rise was primarily an East Coast phenomenon, whereas the Obama surge has targeted all 50 states. It has not just singled out certain “battleground” states or large metropolitan areas.

Minnesota is a good example. It has only 10 electoral votes to offer, yet the Obama people have seen fit to place 13 offices in the state, each equipped with a well-oiled cadre of operational staff. The offices are located strategically throughout the state.

These offices serve as gathering points for recruiting volunteers who fan out to spread the word of the Obama renaissance. According to Dominick Washington, political director of Obama’s Minnesota campaign, there are at present some 10,000 active Obama campaign volunteers in the state, and the count is growing daily.

Washington himself is an interesting study of the Obama lure for young people. He might even be considered typical of the group.

He is a college-educated young man whose wife is expecting their first child within three months. (He is sure that it will be a girl and has a name already picked for her.) Yet he quit his comfortable job in the corporate world, sustaining a considerable monetary loss, to join the Obama troop because he felt that he could make a contribution. And, he feels a sense of pride for having made the transition.

As political director, Washington’s job primarily entails enlisting the support of certain groups or categories of peoples such as Hispanics, African Americans, Latinos, fraternal groups and veteran’s groups. When asked how he could expect support from veteran’s groups when the opposition is a veteran hero who was a prisoner of war for several years, Washington’s reply was sharp:
“Indeed we do get help from veterans. They admire McCain for his Air Force service but damn him for his record in Congress. He has voted against many veteran bills. There is an organized group that we work closely with called Minnesota Veterans for Obama.”

Washington acknowledges that his job has been made harder by the emergence of Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate, but he says that overall her presence does not represent any permanent danger for the campaign. He says that the bulk of her support is coming from the socially conservative faction of the party that has been displeased with McCain as the nominee selection and probably would not have voted at all if someone of her ilk had not been chosen to run with him.

“Furthermore,” he stated emphatically, “we are not building just for this election; we are building with grassroots people of all persuasions to create a better America.” Something in the tone of his voice convincingly conveyed the sincerity of his belief.

Asked how he reconciles the fact that a recent Star Tribune poll shows McCain and Obama tied in the state, Washington gave little credence to the findings of those polls. He did acknowledge that there had been some movement in polls since the RNC convention was held here in Minnesota and the exposure of the Sarah Palin phenomena.

“Furthermore, polls are indications of a point in time,” he said. “That survey was taken during the height of the RNC convention. If the polling were taken today, I’m sure the results would be different.”

A little more about Dominick Washington, since he is destined to be much of the Obama brain trust in the state until the election: He is an upper-Midwesterner by birth — born, reared and educated in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His parents had migrated from rural Mississippi in the early ’70s. He attributes his educational ambition and desire to be a part of public discourse to his great aunt’s influence. She was a teacher who in the ’60s worked with the likes of Medgar Evers in the Civil Rights Movement.

An opportunity to work as an assistant in the Washington, D.C., office of Senator Tom Daschel, Senate Majority Leader from South Dakota, was another force that drew Dominick Washington into the public service sector. He was with the office during the 9/11 disaster as well as during the period of the anthrax scare. In fact, he says that he had an assignment in the White House during the 9/11 incident and was exposed to the upheaval that it created.

Washington seems to think that out-state and rural Minnesota is proving to be not as difficult in the selling of Obama as one might think. With a few notable exceptions, he and much of his cadre are finding that for the most part those people who have not been exposed to diversity are more concerned with a candidate’s political philosophy than the color of his skin.

“There are exceptions,” he hastened to add, “but I don’t think that [such exceptions] are as prevalent as in the larger cities.”

His undying confidence in the inevitability of Obama becoming the next president on November 4 may be a job prerequisite, but Washington is as certain of success as he is of the changing of the seasons, both in Minnesota and nationally. “There isn’t an iota of doubt in my mind,” he stated.

Star Tribune: Obama tells LaCrosse crowd action needed on crisis

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Barack Obama returned to "Minnewisowa" Wednesday and vowed to correct the failings of far off places called Wall Street and Washington.
The Democratic presidential nominee called for swift action on a rescue plan for the nation's financial sector, while declaring the crisis that necessitates it "an outrage" caused by "the greed and irresponsibility that has dominated Washington and Wall Street for years."

Addressing supporters at an outdoor rally in La Crosse, he added in a prepared text: "While there is plenty of blame to go around ... all of us now have a responsibility to solve this crisis because it affects the financial well-being of every single American. There will be time to punish those who set this fire, but now is the moment for us to come together and put the fire out."

It was a message directed to confused and resentful residents of Main Street America who are the focus of both presidential campaigns. "Minnewisowa" is a fanciful name coined for a three-state battleground region, rich in electoral votes, that has been relentlessly targeted by strategists for both Obama and Republican John McCain.

Obama's rally marked the 12th time in just the last month that the presidential candidates or their running mates have visited Minnesota, Wisconsin or Iowa.

All three states have been up for grabs during the past two presidential election cycle and the campaigns' event scheduling and ad spending show that they intend to make a stand in all three in November.

"What you've got here is a mega-state with similar demographics, overlapping media markets, and you can see that the campaign strategists are taking advantage of that by coming back here," said Barry Casselman, a Minneapolis-based political columnist, who coined "Minnewisowa" during the 2004 campaign. "After the last two elections, if these states continue to be close this year, the Minnewisowa notion will continue to matter."

Stability fee proposed

As he has done all week, Obama scrapped his standard stump speech Wednesday and made a concerted pitch for the $700 billion bailout bill still being negotiated in Washington. He cut short his campaigning to return to Washington, D.C. for an expected evening vote on the legislation; McCain did the same.

Laying out a series of principles he said were needed to make a rescue plan acceptable, Obama's text included what he calls a Financial Stability Fee. He said the fee would be imposed on the financial services industry after it recovers to repay any losses taxpayers suffer from the rescue plan and to fund any future interventions that may be required.

Obama's stop in LaCrosse is the fifth time he has visited Wisconsin since the primary season ended in June and the city is at the heart of a swath of counties along the state's western border that have been solidly Democratic in recent presidential elections. But he was casting for a far broader audience, with news media coverage coming not only from local news outlets, but also from the Twin Cities and northeastern Iowa.

" Because of the proximity of the states, the campaigns have a strategic rationale to think about them together," said Kathryn Pearson, a political science professor at the University of Minnesota. "You can go to one state and get media attention in the others, so it makes sense to look at them as a unit. But at the end of the day, each state is its own Electoral College prize."

Taken together, the three states weild 27 electoral votes, which is a bigger total than even Ohio or Florida, traditionally considered the jackpots in presidential elections.

Many of my best friends are McCain supporters, yet when I ask why they support him, they have consistently avoided justifying any of his policies. They honestly don’t know about his policies or stances on issues. Political support — no matter the candidate — must only come after careful deliberation of his or her issues and his or her policies.
To help you become a knowledgeable and responsible voter, I’m going to give you a brief rundown of each candidate’s stance for a few key issues in the upcoming election:
When it comes to taxes, McCain supports tax cuts for those making more than $250,000 and would maintain cuts to capital gains tax and cut corporate tax from 35 percent to 25 percent.
Obama’s tax plan offers permanent tax cuts for 95 percent of Americans while simplifying the tax code, closing corporate tax loopholes and reforming the current regressive tax structure.
In the education department, McCain supports school competition and vouchers as ways to improve quality of education and give parents a choice in schools.
Obama supports increasing Head Start and Early Start funding to cover more at-risk children and a $4,000 annual tax credit for higher education.
When dealing with the environment, in 2005 McCain voted against funding renewable energy and standards requiring 10 percent of electrical energy to come from renewable sources by 2010.
Obama supports policies reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent, investing $150 billion over ten years to renewable energy and requiring 25 percent of all energy to come from renewable sources by 2025.
To all Americans voting in the next election, I ask these questions: Do you know the issues that each candidate stands for? Are you satisfied with where the country is headed? Or do you want change for our country to move back in the right direction?
Once you have answered these questions, you’ll see the choice is clear: Barack Obama is the right candidate.
As college students, we are truly the future of this country. After we graduate, most of us will be working or spending more money on college loans to get through grad school.
We can decide how our futures play out. Do we want to pay more in taxes and to have our school loans and the unemployment rate keep increasing? Or do we want our economy back to where it was 10 years ago? Maybe we should get our government out of huge debt by stopping the spending of $10 billion a month in Iraq.
To me, there is no choice or debate about whom I’m voting for. This country is ready to make a difference in the lives of its citizens and ultimately the world. This country is ready for change.
When Nov. 4 rolls around, be ready to make the change and to make history.
We’ve come to a turning point in our country’s history. The time has come for a new person to rise up and lead us. That leader is Barack Obama.

Obama specifically lays out how his tax plan which offers three times as much tax relief to the middle class and cuts taxes for small and startup businesses differs from McCain’s which will continue giving hundreds of billions in new tax breaks to big corporations and oil companies and extends the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest.

Women's Press Endorses Barack Obama and Joe Biden

Today the Minnesota Women’s Press endorsed Barack Obama for president and Joe Biden for vice president.

It is the first time the Women’s Press has ever endorsed a presidential candidate. Among several reasons, the outlet cited the Obama-Biden ticket’s commitment to issues important to women and all Americans, including:

Duluth News Tribune: Community organizers help ordinary people become leaders

Duluthian Buddy Robinson, a community organizer since 1973, St. Louis County Commissioner Steve O'Neil, a community organizer since 1974, and Rosie Loeffler-Kemp, an emplyee of Clean Water Action and a community organizer since 1984 write in the Duluth News Tribune:

The presidential election has thrust the term into the national news. Democratic nominee Barack Obama claims it as a relevant part of his resume while his Republican challenger, John McCain, allows his campaign to severely deride the occupation.
Meanwhile, most Americans aren’t sure at all about community organizers.
That’s not surprising to us. The profession is, by nature, in the background and not in the limelight. History is filled with the work of community organizers, but few would ever know it because community organizers are rarely the ones cited in history books as “great leaders.” A few notable exceptions do exist. They include Jane Addams and Cesar Chavez.
Community organizing is largely invisible, too, because it isn’t an academically credentialed profession (although it is a branch of social work, and most organizers hold higher education degrees).
So what do community organizers actually do? They work to help ordinary people become leaders in their communities and to create changes that better lives. They build organizations in which people unite to pursue common needs. They transmit skills, inspire confidence and instill hope. Their goal is not to get a few people to become powerful actors in their own right. Instead, the idea is for people to create relationships with each other and to build power collectively to make their communities better places. Organizers are coaches, trainers and recruiters. They encourage people to focus on what is truly important to them and help them learn to research issues, analyze the self interests of stakeholders, figure out strategy and tactics to interact with decision-makers, and form democratically run and internally accountable organizations, which play important roles in the public arena.
Community organizers are teachers, above all. The fundamental teaching is how people can and should become active citizens at all levels of government — and definitely not just at election time. Organizers teach people to get involved effectively in the democratic system, an obligation many people neglect because they feel powerless to act alone. Organizing is the antidote to that.
The Northland has directly benefited — and continues to benefit — from the work of community organizers and the groups they helped build.
For example, the Minnesota Citizens Federation-Northeast (formerly the Senior Federation) is holding down the cost of some essential utility services for all local households by more than $200 per year. The total annual impact is several million dollars. It also operates a program it created with the cooperation of local health-care providers, enabling more than 700 low-income people on Medicare to avoid the cost of supplemental insurance. It plays a significant role at the state level in advocating for affordable health care for everyone. The federation recently persuaded and assisted Duluth in initiating a prescription-import program for city employees and retirees, a savings of up to
$2 million per year.
Another example is Churches United in Ministry, or CHUM. Its volunteers have worked with tenants in dozens of buildings to obtain significant improvements. They’ve worked to obtain dental care and change state dental policy for the uninsured and underinsured. They’ve worked for additional units of housing and services for those homeless. They’ve worked with residents of the former Rainbow mobile home park to secure a fair settlement when the park closed. CHUM constituents are working for a more just state tax policy.
Clean Water Action is yet another example. It goes door to door in neighborhoods in rural and urban communities to educate citizens on numerous local, state, and national issues to protect the environment, public health, economic well-being and quality of life. The community organizing work of its advocates provides many opportunities for citizens to become engaged in the political process around their concerns about the air they breathe and the waters they drink and in which they fish and swim. They’ve been empowering people to take action to protect America’s waters and the health of families for more than 36 years. The largest grass-roots environmental campaign organization in the country, Clean Water Action boasts 1.2 million members who take action at every level to help make democracy work.
The efforts and successes described have been due to many dedicated people working in unison, not just a few professional organizers. And that’s the point: An organizer is a catalyst who encourages people to coalesce and who teaches the tools to be effective. An organizer lets others get the credit for their initiative, aspirations and courage.
Community organizers supply some missing ingredients: lessons about the true meanings of self interest, power and public relationships; a focus on what we all have in common instead of what divides us; and a large dose of hope and faith in how we can shape our futures, together.

Over the weekend, local musicians and guitar enthusiasts gathered at th ehome of Glorial Raheja in St. Paul for a "Guitarists for Obama" organizational meeting and jam session.

Musicians across the country have been inspired by the grassroots movement Barack's historic presidential run has created, including Dakota Dave Hull, Phil Heywood, and Peter Lang, who are pictured above.

These Musicians & Artists for Obama are teaming up to make music which tap's into the campaign's universal themes of hope, unity, and cange. A couple you might recognize, including Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, John Legend, and Stevie Wonder contribted to a CD titled Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement. Independent Voter: Obama gets my vote

Democrats, Republicans, and Independents from across Minnesota are coming together in support of Barack Obama, united by their belief that only Barack can bring about the change America needs--fiscal responsibility, a robust economy, a responsible end to the war in Iraq, and the safety of every American family

Leah Thompson of Fergus Falls is one of the many supporting the only candidate who will change the way Washington works from the bottom up.

Leah writes in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal:

As an Independent voter, my vote will go to Barack Obama for many reasons, but above all, for his position on holding Corporate America (big business) accountable for paying their share of taxes that loopholes have long allowed them to skirt around.
Billions of dollars worth, billions in uncollected taxes. Obama wants big business held accountable to the same rules as you and I.
Contrast this to the policies that John McCain espouses; he opposes federal oversight to big business in-country and out.
For example, he opposed federal oversight to the very financial markets that wiped out last week from making risky mortgage investments for the past three years.
Now, the taxpayers have to bail them out to the tune of $700 billion.
John McCain admits he doesn’t “know much about the economy” on a larger scale.
He couldn’t even recall the number of houses he personally owns. He thinks it is seven. He knows for sure he owns 13 vehicles. These facts alone should cause anybody to wonder how he could possibly relate to working class folks. Read that again. How can he possibly relate to working class folks?
Last week, with the Chernobyl-sized meltdown on Wall Street, he insists “the fundamentals of our economy are strong.” Huh? Do we want this guy writing financial policies that will affect us, our families, our communities?
“The fundamentals of our economy are strong” His solution to this Wall Street mess is to propose a study group for fact-finding, and maybe even dismantle the Washington Good Old Boys Network — of which he is a member by the way — and has been a member for years and years.
Said “network” is funding McCain’s campaign by the millions of dollars. Can we really trust that he wants to dismantle the system that fills his pockets?
The Good Old Boys Network in Washington is (has already?) ruining your financial future. And your children’s financial future. Our belief for a better future seems all but a long shot.
The Good Old Boys grease the wheels of financial markets and big business by letting them loophole out of paying their fair share of taxes on their profit. Millions, billions, that could be funneled to the needs of our whole American society and take the pressure off the ordinary taxpayer.
Executives of said corporate America live a life of decadence and greed while you and I work one, two, three jobs to support our families.
John McCain proposes that it is only fair to allow big business tax breaks. That’s not fair. That’s greed.
Barack Obama will establish oversights so that all Americans, business and citizen, pay due taxes, not just the working class. Now that’s change. Change we can all believe in.

St. Cloud Students Rally with Gov. Tom Vilsack

Over the weekend, former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack toured Minnesota, kicking off canvasses, meeting with supporters and volunteers, and holding town halls on health care and the economy.

Angela Amic never worked for an election campaign before this one.
But a belief in U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s Democratic presidential campaign prompted her to become the campaign’s campus organizer, and brought her to The White Horse Tavern in downtown St. Cloud on Saturday evening.
There, she met former Iowa Gov. Tim Vilsack, once a Democratic presidential candidate himself and now an Obama surrogate.
Vilsack addressed a group of about 20 students and other Obama supporters to cheer them on and encourage them to redouble their efforts going into the final month of the campaign.
Working on a rehabilitational counseling degree, Amic said it’s been difficult to see many people with disabilities struggling to make ends meet.
“It’s tough to see a single parent struggle to feed her children when she can’t afford health insurance to get the treatment she needs so she can continue to provide for her kids,” she said.
A belief in Obama’s health care plan, stance on the Iraq war and on gender equality prompted her to get involved in the Obama campaign, she said.
The Obama campaign has registered 1,100 St. Cloud State students and has a target of getting 2,000 students to the polls Nov. 4, she said.
Students have responded to the Obama campaign, said Sen. Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud, a Minnesota Obama surrogate.
“People are ready for the kind of change Barack Obama’s going to bring,” she said.
Knowing the Catholic lean of the St. Cloud area, Vilsack reminded his audience of his Catholic roots and told them to stay strong in the face of pressure from those who oppose abortion rights to vote against Obama, who is an abortion rights supporter.
“My church is split. There are those who want to restrict the discussion and those who want to broaden the discussion,” he said. “I side with those who want to broaden the discussion to include the many ways that we can choose life.”
Friday’s presidential debate on foreign policy between Obama and Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain was a chance for people to see that Obama is qualified to be commander in chief, Vilsack said.
“Now, we’re looking forward to talking more about the economy in this campaign and how we can help the middle class,” he said.

The morning after: a conversation with former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack

The Minnesota Independent had an opportunity to interview former Governor of Iowa Tom Vilsack earlier today and asked him about last night's debate between Barack and John McCain:

Below is Minnesota Independent's edited transcript of the interview:

Minnesota Independent: We had the first debate last night between Obama and McCain. What did you take away from it?
Tom Vilsack: First of all, this was a debate that Sen. McCain wanted to have first, focused on what he believe to be his strength — foreign policy. But I think Sen. Obama acquitted himself extraordinarily well. He showed great, comprehensive knowledge of the world and of the issues facing the United States. His presence on the stage was presidential. I think Sen. McCain at times appeared angry and a bit caustic.
MI There’s a poll out this morning showing Obama leading in Iowa by eight percentage points. He’s consistently had a comfortable lead there despite the fact that Bush won the state four years ago. What do you attribute that change to?
TV: It starts with Sen. Obama and the fact that he developed a close relationship with the people of Iowa as he campaigned. They got to know him, they were inspired by him, and they are attracted to the policies that he is articulating. Secondly, the state has trended more Democratic over the course of the last eight years. When I was elected governor the Republicans had a registration edge of 60,000. Today Democrats have a registration edge of 90,000. I think part of that is the new people that Sen. Obama is bringing into the party and into the political process every day.
MI: Nationwide we see a slightly different picture. Despite the best climate for Democrats since Watergate, Obama is clinging to a rather small lead. Why do you think he’s having trouble stretching out that lead given the political climate?
TV: I think America is still a divided country politically. So it doesn’t surprise me that the race is close nationally. I fully expect Sen. Obama to continue having this lead, and over the course of the next several weeks widening it, particularly as the focus of the debate is on the economy. It is very clear that Sen. Obama has a better grasp on the financial crisis this country faces and has a better short-term and long-term solution to that crisis.
MI: What role do you think race is playing in the presidential election?
TV: I think what it is doing is providing the country a wonderful opportunity to say to ourselves and to the rest of the world that we are finally prepared to live up to the ideal that was articulated by Martin Luther King 40 years ago, that indeed Americans are prepared and ready to judge someone not based on the color of their skin but on the content of their character.
MI: Are you convinced that it’s necessary to spend $700 billion to get us out of the current financial mess?
TV: I’m not convinced that anybody knows for sure what the right amount is. It may turn out that it’s less than that at the end of the day. It is fairly clear, though, that Main Street suffers when credit becomes hard to get. It’s fairly clear that we cannot afford not to respond to this crisis. Unfortunately Sen. McCain interjected himself into the process earlier this week. It was not helpful. We took a couple of steps back because of that, and I think people are trying to regroup this weekend. My hope is that by the end of this weekend there’s a deal. Then we’ll have to make sure it’s implemented properly and monitored properly.
MI: We’re going to have a debate featuring the vice presidential candidates on Thursday. What do you make of Gov. Sarah Palin?
TV: I fully expect her to do very well in this debate. She’s going to be well prepared. She’s going to be provided the answers and scripted in terms of what she can say. They’ve done a very good job of protecting her during the course of this campaign.
MI: But do you think she’s a qualified vice presidential candidate?
TV: I think it’s up to the people of the United States to make that decision. I will tell you that I have some serious concerns about the manner of the selection as it relates to Sen. McCain’s temperament and his decision-making process. Having myself gone through the vetting process in 2004, it’s hard for me to understand how a decision of that magnitude could be made in three or four days. Which apparently it was when John McCain was told by his handlers that he could not select a person that he wanted to select — which was either Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman — that that would not be acceptable to the extreme right wing of the party and he had to pick someone that was. He then spent a couple of days figuring that out. That’s not the kind of decision making that we should bring to the White House to decide some of the critical issues that face this country after eight disastrous years of the Bush administration.

Over the weekend, in a lead up to tonight’s first presidential debate, which will focus on foreign policy, Barack Obama’s Minnesota campaign held four town hall meetings across Minnesota to hear directly from Minnesotans about their views and answer questions on national security issues.

The campaign held town halls in Rochester, St. Paul, St. Cloud and Duluth.

U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA), chair of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, retired U.S. Army Major General Paul Eaton, who commanded the team charged with rebuilding the Iraqi army, and former Ambassador Bob Gelbard, President Clinton's Special Representative for the Balkans led the meetings.

U.S. Rep. Tim Walz and U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum also joined the campaign for portions of the tour.

Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack will be in Minnesota this weekend, talking with folks about Barack's plans to restore the economy and make it work for rural Americans again.

ST. PAUL – Former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack will join Barack Obama’s Minnesota Campaign for Change this weekend to talk to voters around the state about Senator Obama and Joe Biden’s plan to restore the economy and turn around the current economic crisis.

Vilsack will make several campaign stops around the state on Friday and Saturday including a speech on behalf of the campaign at AFSCME Minnesota’s annual convention, a Twin Cities debate watch party, a canvass kick off in Mankato, an Alexandria office opening and a economic town hall meeting in Willmar.

“Governor Vilsack has long been a strong advocate for middle-class Americans,” Obama’s Minnesota state director Jeff Blodgett said. “He knows first-hand the struggle many families are facing in this economic crisis, and how important it is that we elect Barack Obama to make this economy work for middle-class families here in Minnesota. We’re facing a historic economic crisis, yet John McCain thinks the ‘fundamentals of the economy are strong.’ I’m not sure what world he’s living in but there’s just no way we can trust him to lead us out of this mess.”

John Wesbrook, a resident of Detroit Lakes, writes to the Detroit Lakes Tribune:

I am very surprised the recent polls came out with Sen. McCain leading Sen. Obama in North Dakota by 14 points, and with both candidates pretty even in Minnesota, considering that McCain voted against the recent farm bill.
I traveled North Dakota and Minnesota for 38 years as a representative for Lee Jeans and Data Transmission Co., so I indirectly and then directly depended on the farmers’ income.
I think a lot of people are like me in one way or another — we depend on the farmer as a source of income. Pray tell me, then, why would you vote for somebody who voted against the farm bill?
There is an old saying: “How the farmer goes, so goes Main Street.” I voted for President Bush, but I believe it is time for a change. Take a look at your sons or daughters or grandchildren. There is a good chance they will be in a war if McCain is elected.
President Bush and many deceptions got us into this mess and McCain will most likely continue his ways. I am not a total peace activist, I spent four years in active duty and my wife spent three years. I am tired of our young people dying and money spent for nothing. Voting for Sen. McCain will most likely continue these policies.
I don’t think he is like you and I — he has seven homes and 13 cars. The Obamas have one car between them. Who is more like you and I?

Cost of Iraq War to Duluth

Perhaps the most noteworthy detail coming from the government bailout of Wall Street is that taxpayers may be on the hook for 700 billion dollars, tens of billions of which will undoubtedly come from the pockets of Minnesotans.

What is less at the forefront of the debate is how the War in Iraq has and will continue to complicate the financial health of the US in the future if and when this bailout is implemented. The War has not only served as a terrible drain on our soldiers and military families, but also as a drain on our treasury.

Minnesota State Auditor Rebecca Otto and Duluth Mayor Don Ness announced the findings of the non-partisan National Priorities Project report: that Minnesota alone has committed $15.8 billion dollars to pay for the Iraq War.

For the same amount of money, Minnesota could have funded one of the following priorities:

4,532,602 People with Health Care for One Year
18,086,082 Homes with Renewable Electricity for One Year
345,631 Public Safety Officers for One year
247,938 Music and Arts Teachers for One Year
1,717,699 Scholarships for University Students for One Year
100,619 Affordable Housing Units

2,285,863 Head Start Places for Children for One Year
270,034 Elementary School Teachers for One Year

Otto went even further, breaking down the numbers for Duluth specifically, which has committed $199.5 million to the Iraq War:

3,140 Music and Arts Teachers for One Year
21,752 Scholarships for University Students for One Year
1,274 Affordable Housing Units

Mayor Ness tied the War on Iraq to problems facing everyday Minnesotans:

This is what happens with a Republican Administration. You get an energy policy written by oil lobbyists, and the end result is four-dollar-a-gallon gas. It’s time for a change.

State Auditor Rebecca Otto added:

We’re already seeing less federal revenue coming into state and local governments. According to the GAO, this problem is only going to get worse. And, as a result, you’re going to see property taxes go up.

The Bush Administration has devoted too much of Minnesota’s vital resources to a war that should have never been waged. In doing so, they have weakened our nation’s ability to provide healthcare, renewable energy, and quality education to every single American.

Barack Obama will end the war 16 months after coming into office and reinvest the money saved back into infrastructure, education, and middle class tax cuts.

John McCain would commit us to Iraq for a hundred years if need be, and now we know exactly where that money will come from.

Grassroots Supporter Spotlight: Grand Marais

Grand Marais is a small harbor village on the North Shore of Lake Superior where Barack has some great grassroots supporters.

The folks in Grand Marais know that change does not come from lobbyists running a campaign, but it comes from the bottom up. It comes from the ordinary Americans who stand together and fight against the divisive politics of Washington.

KAAL on Obama Campaign Town Hall Meeting

KAAL reports on yesterday's National Security Town Hall in Rochester:

(ABC 6 News) - Polls are showing a tight margin between Barack Obama and John McCain. As we get closer to Election Day we can expect to see more local politicians rallying for their presidential candidate.
In the first town hall meeting for Senator Barack Obama in Rochester, national security experts took the stage stumping for the democratic hopeful.

They unveiled Obama's foreign policy vision for national security.

It includes withdrawing troops from Iraq within 16 months and refocusing the fight towards Al Qaeda and the Taliban.
"Focus on the people who actually perpetrated 9-11 on us that's taking this to Afghanistan and making sure Pakistan is brought into this," Tim Walz.

Republicans in our area stumping for John McCain were quick to respond to the proposal. In a phone interview Minnesota Republican Chair Ron Carey criticizes Obama's plan.
"On Iraq, Barack Obama says he wants peace, but if he continues to oppose the strategy that has lead to a tremendous reduction of violence, his calls for unconditional withdrawal could result in a renewed violence," said Carey.
Democratic Congressman Tim Walz disagrees.
"The currently policy under President Bush supported by Senator McCain has been solely focused on Iraq, that had nothing to do with 9-11, and had used our resources, our troops to the point where it's very difficult to focus on the greater need," said Walz.

National Security Leaders Discuss Obama's Plan to Keep Americans Safe

This weekend, several high-profile national security experts were in Minnesota to talk about Barack's vision for a 21st century national security policy.

Rochester, MN – In a lead up to next Friday’s first presidential debate, which will focus on foreign policy, Barack Obama’s Minnesota campaign held four town hall meetings across Minnesota to hear directly from Minnesotans about their views and answer questions on national security issues. The campaign held town halls in Rochester, St. Paul, St. Cloud and Duluth.

U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA), chair of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, retired U.S. Army Major General Paul Eaton, who commanded the team charged with rebuilding the Iraqi army, and former Ambassador Bob Gelbard, President Clinton's Special Representative for the Balkans led the meetings. U.S. Rep. Tim Walz and U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum also joined the campaign for portions of the tour.
“Barack Obama has a comprehensive national-security strategy focused on responsibly ending the Iraq war and shifting focus to defeating al Qaeda in Afghanistan, ending our dependence on foreign oil and securing our financial systems to keep us safe and prosperous in a dangerous world,” Eaton said. “Senator Obama has the judgment, the vision and the leadership to be a commander in chief for the 21st century.
“On the major national security decisions facing this country in the last eight years John McCain has consistently sided with the Bush administration’s policy of go-it-alone cowboy diplomacy, which has left America less secure and has damaged our standing in the world. John McCain has not shown the judgment or the temperament to take on the 21st century threats we face.”
Walz attended the Rochester event.
“Barack Obama has been right on the major national security issues of our times: courageously opposing the war in Iraq from the start, working across party lines to pass critical legislation to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists, and leading on the issue of going after al Qaeda no matter where they hide. This is the vision and leadership we need in our next commander in chief,” Walz said.
“As President, Senator Obama will restore our country’s sacred trust with veterans, ensuring that their sacrifices for our nation’s security are honored and respected and that they receive the care and benefits they deserve upon their return from service.”
Barack Obama’s Plan to Keep America Safe

While Senator McCain remains distracted by Iraq, Barack Obama will lead this country in a new direction by focusing on five essential goals to make America safer.

1. Ending the war in Iraq responsibly. Obama will change our mission in Iraq and responsibly redeploy our combat brigades in consultation with our commanders and the Iraqi government. We can safely redeploy at a pace that removes our combat brigades in 16 months, with a residual force to target remnants of al Qaeda, to protect our service members and diplomats, and to train Iraq's Security Forces if the Iraqis make political progress. This change in mission will ease the burden on our troops and their families while increasing our flexibility to address more pressing challenges in Afghanistan. Obama will also increase diplomacy in the region and act immediately to address the humanitarian crisis in Iraq.

2. Finishing the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban. Obama will send at least two additional combat brigades to Afghanistan and offer greater assistance to Afghanistan’s military and judiciary—investing in growth from the bottom up. And he’ll increase nonmilitary aid to Pakistan and step up security in the border region with Afghanistan.

3. Securing all nuclear weapons and materials from terrorists and rogue nations. Obama will lead a global effort to secure all loose nuclear materials around the world during his first term as President. And because we can’t allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, Obama will use all elements of American power to pressure the Iranian regime, starting with aggressive, principled, and direct diplomacy backed by strong sanctions.

4. Achieving true energy security. Global warming and our dependence on oil from hostile nations add up to a national security crisis. As President, Obama will end our dependence on foreign oil by investing $150 billion in renewable and alternative energy over the next ten years—an investment that will create millions of jobs along the way.

5. Rebuilding our alliances to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Obama will reinvigorate longstanding diplomatic efforts around the world and launch new ones. He’ll double our foreign assistance to $50 billion by 2012 so that we can help bring stability to failing states, cut global poverty in half, fight poverty and disease, and support sustainable growth.

Obama Supporters Cheer Breast Cancer Walkers

Members of Minnesota Women for Obama were up bright and early this morning to cheer on participants in the Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk for Breast Cancer.

As part of the Women's Week of Action, a group of Obama supporters stood at the 25 mile marker with "Women for Obama" rally signs and offered words of encouragement and handed out Women for Obama buttons and stickers to the run/walkers.

Rally to Restore the Economy

Yesterday, nearly 4,000 regular Minnesotans showed up for a Rally to Restore the Economy in downtown Minneapolis.

These folks came from all over to send John McCain the clear message that Minnesota is ready for change, and don't want another four years of the same economic mess George Bush has given us for the last eight.

Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak offered the crowd some advice on how to talk to their friends and neighbors about Barack Obama's plan to get the economy working again.

RT asked five volunteers to join him on stage, each holding a homemade sign with one point of Barack's economic plan written on it:

Middle-class tax cuts
Regulate Wall St
No more foreign oil
Kick out the lobbyists
End the war,

RT also asked the crowd to get involved with Barack's Campaign for Change in Minnesota.

From the Star Tribune:

Mayor Rybak asked those in the crowd to do five things before the election.
1. Sign up to vote
2. Send a text message to No. 62262, which spells “Obama.” Type MN in the message to get on Obama’s text message system, and convince 5 others to do the same, Rybak asked.
3. Knock on doors in your neighborhood and encourage people to vote for Obama.
4. Host a debate-watching party next Friday and invite uncommitted people to attend.
5. Take Election Day off. “This will be the largest get out and vote operation in Minnesota,” Rybak said.
To close the rally out, Rybak invited St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minneapolis City Council members to join him onstage where they high-fived one another. The crowd responded with cheers, chanting “Yes we can!”

Three supporters of presidential candidate Barack Obama will visit St. Cloud today as part of a Minnesota tour.
Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher, D-Calif.; retired Maj. Gen. Paul D. Eaton; and former Ambassador Bob Gelbard will be at Whitney Senior Center, 1527 Northway Drive.
Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for the event.
The St. Cloud stop is one of four this weekend. Other stops are in Duluth, Rochester and St. Paul.

Minnesota Women for the Change We Need: Duluth

As its third day draws to a close, the Minnesota Women's Week of Action is revving up for an exciting, event-filled weekend.

Up in Duluth today, a group of Women for Obama who couldn't make it down to Minneapolis for the Rally to Restore the Economy, decided to get together and show their support for Barack on a highly-trafficked street corner.

Here's how Joan, one of the enterprising women described the day:

We had about a dozen women at the corner and had a great time. Many many cars and people went by cheering for us and honking and giving the thumbs up. Passers by even came to stand with us and one woman had her boyfriend take a picture of her with our signs. We had signs that said: Hockey moms for Obama (I put mine on a hockey stick), Community Organizers for Obama, Moms for Obama, Obama Grandmas, People of Faith for Obama.

We have decided that we are going to stand on at least one busy street corner every Friday until Election Day with our signs. If it takes off, we plan to add more locations and maybe more days as the election gets closer. It was a great time.

We were energized and got good response. I hope we can get more people and then try some other sites. We will keep the signs positive.

MPR: Obama supporters hold counter rally

Minneapolis — As Republican presidential candidate John McCain addressed a crowd of 10,000 in Blaine, Democrats held a counter-rally in downtown Minneapolis in support of presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Organizers put the crowd in Peavey Plaza at 3,500, and noted that they drew that number even though Obama wasn't there.
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak blamed Republican free-market principles for the current turmoil in the financial markets. And he blasted McCain for being a long-time supporter of deregulation.
"That's what John McCain -- 20 years ago, 10 years ago, five years ago, one year ago, one week ago -- he thought that having no regulation would work. How is that working out for you today?" Rybak said.
Obama's Minnesota state director Jeff Blodgett said the economy has been an important issue for a long time, but recent events have put it into sharp focus.
Blodgett said now that the sizzle of the Republican National Convention is over, voters want to hear what McCain is saying about the economy.
"They spent a lot of time on personalities, and a lot of time on attacks and a lot of time on distractions," said Blodgett. "Now it's time to find out if he has anything to say to hurting middle class families in Minnesota. And from what he's said all week, that the fundamentals of the economy are strong, I doubt we'll hear anything of the kind.
Other speakers at the "Rally to Restore the Economy" included DFL House Speaker Margaret Kelliher and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison.

3500 Rally to Restore the Economy in Minneapolis

Around 3500 Obama-Biden supporters showed up in downtown Minneapolis for a "Rally to Restore the Economy." The crowd heard short speeches from Mayor RT Rybak, Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, and Congressman Keith Ellison, but the focus of this rally was on the everyday Minnesotans whose lives have been directly affected by the failed economic policies of the last eight years.

Adam Levy, the lead singer of the Honeydogs and Martin Devaney entertained the crowd before and after the rally.

Minnesota Women Phone Bank for Change, Watch Hillary and Joe Talk Issues

Last night, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton sat down to talk one-on-one and answer question that women had sent in earlier. Women gathered at Campaign for Change offices across Minnesota as part of the Women for Change: Women's Week of Action.

Joe and Hillary discussed issues such as equal pay for equal work, reproductive health, expanding the Family Medical Leave Act, protecting Social Security and more.
