John McCain is making a final push for Maine—and he's committed to a negative campaign designed to distort Barack's record with false attacks.

That means now is the time to fight back by making this the biggest get out the vote effort in Maine history. We need to prove that what we've built is real and can deliver the change America needs.

Mainers Call on McCain to Stop False Smears
and Focus on the Economic Issues Facing Maine Families.

BANGOR, ME – Mainers denounced the dishonorable and dishonest robo calls that the McCain campaign is making to Maine residents today, and called on McCain to stop the negative smears and focus on the critical economic issues facing Maine families. The campaign also urged Mainers to report negative calls to www.fightthesmears.com/report.

“I was an undecided voter until I got this disturbing call which crossed a line that should not be crossed. I will be voting for Barack Obama because I believe he has the character and integrity to lead this great nation and find real solutions to the challenges facing Mainers,” said Charles Anthony from Durham.

Mainers who received the call gathered in Bangor and Lewiston to urge McCain to give Mainers an honest debate on the issues.

“My 9-year-old son heard the message yesterday and frankly, this is not language I would even allow him to hear on TV or in a movie. It was very disturbing to me as a parent that someone who is running for president would allow a phone message to be left on families’ answering machines saying such dishonorable, disturbing things,” said David Anderson from Buckfield.

The Obama campaign received several reports from residents who received the calls. House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth urged Mainers to continue reporting these false attacks at www.fightthesmears.com/report.

“We encourage Mainers to continue reporting these false attacks. This election is too important to allow our opponent to distract Maine families from the critical differences between the two candidate’s plans for the economy,” said House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth. “What is really at stake is the fact that Obama will cut taxes for the middle class and small businesses, while McCain would deny tax relief to 101 million hardworking families, including 97 percent of seniors. It is no wonder that McCain is trying to divert attention from his plan to continue Bush’s failed economic policies.”

Respond to Gov. Palin in Maine

Governor Palin will be campaigning in Maine for the first time tomorrow. Representative Hannah Pingree just sent out the following email asking supporters to respond by writing a letter to the editor of their local paper:

With Governor Palin making her first visit to campaign in Maine this week, we need you to speak out and share Barack's message with your community.

In this struggling economy, Barack Obama and Joe Biden will make real change happen for Mainers. They will deliver tax relief for Maine families, strengthen the economy, and find real solutions to the energy crisis.

They offer the leadership we need at this important moment in our nation's history. Not only will they work for middle class families here in Maine, they will bring real change to Washington and create opportunities for all hardworking Americans to get ahead.
