Great training today in Kalamazoo, MI. We had 12 CO's and NTL's in attendance. As one attendee put it, "We have everyone here, from students to AARP members." The group was made up of people who have been working at the grassroots level since the campaign as well as people looking to dive back into grassroots organizing. Overall, participants really appreciated the breadth and depth of the training from our discussions about building teams to discussions about the legislative process. It was clear that today's training not only provided them with the tools necessary to organize in their community, but a renewed sense of enthusiasm about the very important work they will be doing!

University of Michigan College Dems Break Own Record

On Thursday, The College Democrats at the University of Michigan sought out to break their own national record for the most calls made at a single Organizing for America event. After making calls for ten straight hours with over 30 students participating, their efforts paid off. The College Democrats at the University of Michigan made 2,075 calls! They set the previous record at 1,739 just over month ago. A conference room in the Michigan Union was scene of the phonebanking marathon. It was filled with call sheets, pizza boxes, phone chargers and dozens of the group's members, showing up to make calls for as much or as little time as their schedules would allow. Some members stayed for four or five hours as a time, while others showed up several times through out the day in between classes and work to make as many calls as they could. True to their affinity for new media, the group used a Facebook event, google form, dozens of emails, Twitter, and text messages to rally its members. The College Democrats look forward to challenging their own record again in support of reform.

OFA in Michigan Welcomes Home Members of Congress

This week, Organizing for America in Michigan is preparing events to thank members of congress for their support on health insurance reform. Last Saturday, the House of Representatives passed historic health reform legislation. Allen and Janet H couldn’t wait to thank their representative, Congressman Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Hills) for his support on health insurance reform. Allen and Janet have been involved in politics for over 50 years and comprehensive health insurance reform has been a goal they have always hoped could be achieved. Shortly after Saturday night’s vote, President Obama released the following statement

Tonight, in an historic vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would finally make real the promise of quality, affordable health care for the American people.
The Affordable Health Care for America Act is a piece of legislation that will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance; quality affordable options for those who don’t; and bring down the cost of health care for families, businesses, and the government while strengthening the financial health of Medicare. And it is legislation that is fully paid for and will reduce our long-term federal deficit.

Thanks to the hard work of the House, we are just two steps away from achieving health insurance reform in America. Now the United States Senate must follow suit and pass its version of the legislation. I am absolutely confident it will, and I look forward to signing comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year.

Having always been supporters of Congressman Peters, Allen and Janet were overjoyed and wanted to find a special way to thank him for his support for health insurance reform. Janet decided to bake the Congressman her famous banana nut bread and Allen delivered it to him personally.

Flint Celebrates the One Year Aniversary of Change

Organizing for America hosted a celebration in Flint on the one year anniversary of the election of President Barack Obama. Complete with décor from the campaign, the ubiquitous Barack Obama cardboard cutout, and speeches from then Sen. Obama in the background, the atmosphere was somewhat surreal for those that had worked tirelessly during the campaign.

The scavenger hunt was case in point. It asked participant to find someone who: volunteered in both 2008 and 2009; volunteered out of state; made a donation; attended an event with Sen. Obama; attended the inauguration, and was wearing Obama gear. Everyone in the room fit at least one category. I met Jim Carlson, who volunteered in Michigan last year. Looking back on the one year mark, Jim said “It’s amazing how much has been accomplished since then”. I also met Mary McLemore who attended events with President Obama in Flint and Detroit. I met Laurie Holland, who was on the National Mall with her daughter when President Obama was officially sworn in. All voted for change, most volunteered for change, and many continue to work for change with Organizing for America.

Many were in this very room exactly one year ago watching the fruits of their labor come to fruition. Brian Bates remembers the excitement in the packed room as Genesee county residents waited for the results to come in.

“You get nervous. No matter how hard you worked, there’s always a chance the votes won’t go your way. I just hope we continue to push for the change we were pushing for during the election because it’s important and people need help.”

The trip down memory lane also served to keep people focused on continuing to work for change. Two tables on display had signs that said “Then” and “Now”. The latter was filled with sign-ups for Organizing for America volunteer opportunities, a place to sign up to call your congressman in support of health insurance form, and a place to drop off letters to members of Congress in support of reform. Flint township leader Mary Putnam spoke to the crowd, telling them of the friends she made during the campaign and the weekly meetings they still have to continue to push for change.

What We Achieved as a Team

During the campaign in 2008, I primarily made phone calls, knocked on doors in my neighborhood, sent text messages and did a little bit of data entry. The memories I have of November 4th, pretty much amount to feelings of a victory and teamwork. There were so many people involved in every community working together to achieve a goal. The evening of November 4th, I specifically remember reading a book to my daughter and falling asleep at around 9:00PM. The following morning seemed like a dream come true for America. We celebrated then, we celebrate now, and we continue to do what we did then to make our local communities stronger all across this country. Together we have a voice and together we must move forward to make this country a better place for all of our citizens. Why I continue to work with OFA is because it represents what we the majority voted for. The people of this country need a powerful voice to be heard at a moments notice. The more organized we become together as a team; the louder our voices are heard. Please continue to volunteer in your local community as much as you can and always know that it does make a difference.

Nov.4th Then and Now: "The Sense of Hope That Continues to Motivate Me"

Michigan: As Americans all across the country today celebrate the one year anniversary of the election of President Barack Obama, hundreds of Organizing for America volunteers gather to celebrate their continued efforts for change. For Community Organizer Christine Jaranowski, the hope born out of a movement for change and a historic election continues today.“It is that sense of hope that continues to inspire and motivate me as I continue the work started last fall, now with Organizing for America.”

Like many in Michigan, Christine joined the President’s campaign late in the election. President Obama was not on the ballot during the Michigan Primary, and there was little campaigning in the state by any Democratic candidate. The general election brought heavy campaigning from both Presidential contenders, and allowed Christine an opportunity to be involved in history.

“Getting involved in a presidential campaign was something that I had always wanted to do, but I never seemed to have the time to volunteer. In 2008, I was able to not only make the time to get involved, but I’d also found, in Barack Obama, a candidate that I believed could not only bring about much needed change, but one that I could support wholeheartedly.”

Unlike Christine, Chris Savage had been involved in previous election. His motivation to get involved with a local Dexter group could be found in those defeats.

“I got involved because I felt like I had really dropped the ball in 2004. Although we had volunteered on Election Day, we never got fully involved in the Kerry campaign and, when he was defeated, I felt defeated. I vowed I would never let that happen again.”

As Chris knocked on 1000s of door and made hundreds of calls in his community, Christine was running a phonebank in her home in Fenton every week from the beginning of September until Nov 4th. Christine remembers fondly the empowerment her volunteers felt when they were able to convince undecided voter to support President Obama. For Christine and Chris and millions of others across the country, the final results on Nov 4th proved that change could come from the ground up, and could lead to stronger communities.

“On election night, I remember standing with my team of volunteers, people I’d only known for a few weeks, but people who were tirelessly dedicated to fighting for change, and I remember the sense of accomplishment in creating this community of volunteers and the joy at not only having won, but of having been a part of something much larger. More importantly, for the first time in eight years, I had a restored sense of hope; hope that change was not just a possibility but also a reality.”

The ability to affect change has kept Chris, Christine, and hundreds of grassroots leaders involved in their movement for change with Organizing for America. Chris was able to get a lot of the friends he made during the campaign active again with OFA in the pursuit of health insurance reform. Christine has again taken a leadership role in Genesee County, not only in continuing to run a phonebank but also training and empowering other leaders.

“I have learned that we can’t just wait for change, we have to work for change every day. Today, we continue to work hard for change, as Organizing for America fights for real health insurance reform.”

Organizing for America in Michigan Grassroots Profile: University of Michigan College Democrats

Ann Arbor- One of the strengths of President Obama’s 2008 Campaign for Change was the record number of youth that got involved in hopes of changing the country. The College Democrats at the University of Michigan were a part of these efforts last year, and fortunately they have continued their efforts in a big way with Organizing for America –Michigan.

UMCD’s work with OFA- Michigan began with a meeting between their leadership and OFA- Michigan staff. Shortly after, Amanda Caldwell was chosen as the OFA liaison and they began to tackle health insurance reform by hosting weekly phone banks and doing outreach on campus. Since then Amanda and the College Dems have proven to be grassroots leaders on their campus and in the state.

A recent friendly competition with student organizers at Michigan State University proved the College Dems’ ability to affect change. On Thursday, October 15, more than 60 students from UMCD made over 1700 phone calls to Michigan residents urging them to call their representatives in support of President Barack Obama's plan for health insurance reform. At this event, UMCD members set the national record for the most phone calls made at a single Organizing for America event. Starting early in the day, UMCD members began calling potential supporters to encourage them to contact their members of Congress about health insurance

"It was great to see so many of our members turn out to the event," said Samuel T. Marvin, chair of UMCD. "Health care is a student issue. By working on comprehensive health insurance reform now, we are making an investment in our future.

In addition to UMCD's involvement with OFA Michigan, the group also activates on progressive issues and campaigns for Democratic candidates. Last fall, UMCD members volunteered for congressional candidates Gary Peters, Mark Schauer, and Bart Stupak. The members have also been volunteering for Marty Griffin's campaign for State Senate throughout the fall.

UMCD holds weekly chapter meetings every Thursday in the Michigan Union at 8pm.

Time to Deliver Michigan: Volunteers continue to gain support for reform as President Obama urges them to continue.

Volunteers all over Michigan watched as President Barack Obama spoke via webcast tonight from New York, urging them to continue their efforts to push for reform. The speech comes near the end of Organizing for America’s national day of action that urged over 200,000 people to call their member of congress.

The president's address struck a chord with Neighborhood Team Leader Marisa Downs. "Great motivating speech. We got your back Mr. President. We're just getting started on cleaning up this country."

Marisa needed little motivation to take part in Organizing for America’s efforts “Time to Deliver” day of action. Activism is in her blood. “My father was in the Peace Corp and my mom followed civil rights leaders like Cesar Chavez and the Kennedys. I also had great teachers who taught me how important it is to be informed and involved.” Marisa and her fellow volunteers from the Plymouth Democratic Club have been working for reform for months, making thousands of calls, and getting hundreds of voices involved in the process. Tonight’s effort is just another day in the office. Marisa’s group even had to change locations so they could continue to make calls.

In Lansing, volunteers continued to reach out to their community after inspiring words from President Obama. The phone bank began at 4 p.m. at the Michigan Democratic Party HQ and by 5:30 p.m., volunteers had run out of phones and were almost out of call lists. One phone call went to Interlochen nurse Kathie, who agreed to contact her members of Congress.

Kathie volunteers at the Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City and said she was going to tell her member of Congress about the plight of the uninsured she sees every day as a nurse. By the time Marsha Parrot-Boyle sat down to watch the President's speech, the Lansing effort had reached out to over 1,000 people. Marsha responded to the President's address by simple saying. "It was inspiring. Let's do it!"

Time to Deliver Michigan: Oakland County

As Organizing for America continues to reach out to communities across the nation today, volunteers at Oakland County Democratic Party HQ have been making calls into their community since 11 AM. Linda Schwartz is one of over 30 volunteers in Michigan who have been making calls today to get supporters for the President’s health insurance reform principles to call their member of congress.

Linda took the call to action even though it involves something she doesn’t normally like to do. With the status quo being unsustainable and health insurance costs continuing to skyrocket, Linda knows she has to get out of her comfort zone to help deliver health reform we need. “Making calls is not my favorite thing to do but I believe we need to have true health reform. I am willing to put my personal fears aside for this cause.”

Thousands of people in Oakland County and across the state of Michigan have already committed to calling Congress. As Organizing for America surpasses 100,000 commitments today alone, Linda and her fellow volunteers continue to bring more voices in the process.

Time to Deliver in Michigan: Antrim County and Detroit

Volunteers across the state of Michigan are taking part part in a national day of action to support President Obama’s plan for health reform, calling on their neighbors to ask them to tell their representatives that it's time to deliver on health reform.

The Antrim Women’s Democratic Club is reaching out to other women in their community in support for reform. Volunteers like Lynne want to make sure other women know that reform will end discrimination for gender and pre-existing conditions and give greater choice to American families, all while lowering costs to American Families. Lynne also sees this as an opportunity for Americans supporting reform to remind Washington of their seat at the table. “It’s important to be involved in this debate and to talk to our representativess because we elected them," she expalined. “They work for us!”

Volunteers in Detroit have been calling their neighbors since noon. This is Jeffernell's first time in the Organizing for America Detroit office, but she decided that she had to get involved now. "I did not have a lot of time to give, but I believed I needed to do something, no matter how small or how little. So today, inbetween scheduled appointments that I had downtown, I decided to stop in to make some calls."

Organizing for America in Michigan Grassroots Profile: Melissa Bernardi

Clarkston- Two years ago, Melissa Bernardi was a part time bookseller in Clarkston, Michigan. Today, Melissa is a proud Community Organizer with Organizing for America in North Oakland County. For Melissa, her venture into organizing began when she heard about her friends experiences with the other campaign experiences of her friends.

“I was always impressed by the stories a dear friend had told me about his experience working on the Bobby Kennedy presidential campaign, which led me to volunteering for Obama for America last year."

Like many working with Organizing for America, Melissa was inspired by her work on behalf of then Senator Obama.

“My first experience was a canvass in my town at the end of August that consisted of 3 other local volunteers. By Election Day there were literally hundreds of community members streaming through my house to knock on doors. By being a volunteer for the campaign I discovered how many of my neighbors shared my views, but had been too quiet or felt too alone to voice them.”

After the campaign ended, Melissa missed the spirit of community and activism she had experienced. It was not long before Melissa began volunteering with Organizing for America. Since then, Melissa has been a leader in the state of Michigan in the campaign for health insurance reform. She has reached out to thousands of Oakland Country residents in support of reform, led or participated in dozens of citizen contact events, and attended several trainings on community organizing. She even got the chance to meet Vice President Joe Biden in August. For Melissa, it’s all about having a voice in the process.

“The end of the campaign just left me wanting to continue being a voice for change in my community. Being a Community Organizer for Organizing for America has given me that voice to inspire others.”

Over 150 people Join Organizing for America to Discuss Health Insurance Reform

Lansing- On Monday, October 5th, over 150 supporters of health insurance reform for every congressional district in Michigan joined Organizing for America in Michigan State Director Aletheia Henry and State Field Director Garrett Arwa to learn more about President Obama's plan for health insurance reform and how they can get involved. The hour-long discussion included a review of President Obama's plan for reform, and highlighted OFA's efforts to organize support in communities across the state.

Michigan Listening Tour: "This Is Our Chance to Reengage and Remobilize"

There already have been close to 20 Listening Tour stops in Michigan alone, with two more upcoming events in Grand Rapids and Plymouth. Nationwide, Organizing for America has held more than 200 events as a way to let volunteers help shape the organization on the ground as it moves forward.

The Barack Obama bandwagon isn’t slowing down.
Just because the man now resides at the famous 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in the nation’s capital doesn’t mean it’s time to forget the surge of grass-roots support that came out during the presidential campaign, according to top-ranking Democrats.
Because of that, the Democratic National Committee is in the midst of hosting listening tours in every state in the nation. The casual meetings are being held so that staffers can meet with Obama supporters to gain input into what his constituents are thinking.
“This is our chance to reengage and remobilize those who have shown that they’re really interested in supporting President Obama’s agenda,” said Aletheia Henry, the Michigan director of the Organizing for America campaign.

That's why I'm so excited to announce that we're back on the ground in Michigan, and starting this Thursday, April 16th, we'll be hosting Listening Tour Town Halls across the state.

Will you make your voice heard and join us on the Listening Tour?

At Listening Tour meetings, you'll get a chance to meet new state staff members, hear about some lessons learned during the general election, and offer your thoughts on how we can organize Michigan going forward. Thanks to you, Michigan will be part of the change we need. Thanks to you, Michigan has decisively voted for Senator Obama. We've turned the page on the divisive politics of the past - thanks to you.

To our volunteers, to our staff - to everyone who worked so hard to make this day happen - thank you. We couldn't have done it without you, and you are what this campaign is and was all about.

This is hopefully just the beginning of what will be a fantastic night for our nation as other states follow Michigan’s lead and for Democrats up and down the ticket in Michigan.

John McCain's campaign has as recently as yesterday said that they believe that students won't turn out to vote. Today is our day to prove them wrong and show America that young voters do matter. Our opponent and the media believe that young voters won’t show up - that we don’t care about the election, and are too lazy, too unwilling, or too unmotivated to actually get out and vote.

But today, we’ll prove them wrong.

 Today is the day to turn the page on eight years of failed Bush policies that have seen our middle class shrink, economy worsen, and college move out of reach for more and more people. Today is the day to make your voice heard!

I know everyone is busy, has other things to do, has work, and is tired. But - there will be thousands of other days to work, thousands of other days to sleep, thousands of other days to run errands. This is our only day to make sure Barack Obama becomes president and if we win this election I truly believe each of those thousands of other days will be better.

That is why I am asking you to take off Election Day and help ensure that we elect Barack Obama our next president.

In twenty years you will not be thinking I sure am glad I slept those extra few hours or I am glad I saved my vacation or sick day. But I guarantee you that you will be proud for the rest of your life to have been part of the Obama Campaign on Election Day 2008.

Let's win this thing.

At 11:30 pm, on the eve of election day, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, U.S. Senator Carl Levin, and Denise Ilitch, Candidate for University of Michigan Board of Regents will join students and supporters for a “Midnight Madness,” Get Out the Vote Rally for Barack Obama in Ann Arbor. Obama, on the other hand, chose a running mate who complements him. Obama recognizes his lack of experience in foreign policy, and thoughtfully chose Joe Biden, who is a subject expert.
Also, Obama has made a commitment to end the U.S. occupation in Iraq, a position that is clearly favored by the American people. With McCain, there seems to be no end in sight.
While Obama has not been in Washington long and his inexperience is a weakness, he has shown the wisdom to seek advice from people who have knowledge and experience he can tap into.
More than anything else, this country needs change — a change in politics and a change in the economy. We fear a McCain presidency would be too similar to the last eight years. Barack Obama has the leadership abilities and the drive to make a difference, and hopefully, change this country’s momentum.

Lt. Governor Cherry: Eight Years is Enough -- Tuesday is the Most Important Election in 80 Years

(Today, we're proud to have Lt. Governor John D. Cherry, Jr. with a guest post on why this election is so important. Lt. Governor Cherry has been active in the campaign, helping to kick off a canvass in Petoskey earlier this week. Join our Get Out The Vote efforts to help bring the change we need in this critical point in the campaign!)

For the last eight years, middle-class families in Michigan have struggled to stay afloat as the policies of the Bush administration added insult to the injury of the global economic changes that make Michigan's economy so vulnerable. Jobs have gone to Mexico and China, health care costs have exploded, and energy costs are straining family budgets to the breaking point.

Eight years ago our federal budget had a surplus left behind by a Clinton administration that understood how America's economic strength came from the ground up, and the importance of creating opportunity for America's middle class. Since then, our federal surplus has been squandered, our global reputation has been diminished, and worst of all, too many Michigan families have seen the gains they were making a decade ago wiped out. Opportunity and a secure future have been replaced by economic insecurity that threatens to unravel our ability to care for our parents, put our children through college and plan for retirement.

But next week we have the opportunity to end the era of profound irresponsibility in Washington DC that threatens our ability to achieve the American Dream. Every one of us has a chance to be part of the change we so desperately need by voting for Barack Obama.

As President, Barack Obama will cut taxes for the middle class, provide every American family with a $1000 energy rebate and create millions of new jobs by investing in infrastructure and renewable energy. These are the kinds of good-paying American jobs that cannot be outsourced.

And Barack Obama has made a clear commitment to Michigan jobs. He supports assistance to our struggling auto industry so that we can once again lead the world in the production of the next generation of fuel-efficient automobiles and he is committed to protecting and preserving our Great Lakes and the economic vitality that they create.

Barack Obama is commited to changing government so that it is once again responsible and responsive enough to actually deal with our heath care crisis, deal with energy in a serious way, push through a more balanced tax program that benefits middle class families, stabilize the financial markets and responsibly end the war in Iraq that costs us ten billion dollars a month.

But while November 4 presents us with a chance to finally move Michigan and our country in a positive direction, that change will not come easily. If we are complacent over the next few days then we will end up with John McCain, Sarah Palin and more of the same economic devastation.

A vote for Barack Obama means that Michigan will finally have a partner in the White House who gets it, but we must earn that opportunity by making sure we mobilize our friends, neighbors and colleagues. As Senator Obama has so often said, this election is about us. We can create the change we need by working hard for the next week to elect Barack Obama, President of the United States.

With only five days left until Election Day, we hope you'll be able to join us at one of these great events tomorrow:

Tomorrow, October 31st, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm will speak at a Get Out The Vote Canvass Kick-Off in Traverse City to mobilize and energize Michigan voters. With only five days until the election, Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change is taking nothing for granted in Michigan. Tomorrow’s event is the campaign’s latest attempt to inform and motivate voters across the state, in a campaign that continues to gain momentum and fight for every last vote in the state, in the lead up to November 4th.

In Grand Rapids, Michigan House Speaker Pro Tempore Michael G. Sak will join with other Grand Rapids area elected officials to show their support for Barack. They will talk about how Barack's plan for jobs, tax relief, energy independence, and health care reform will bring the change West Michigan needs.

And, since it's Halloween, we'll be holding "Trick-or-Vote" canvasses kicking off on college campuses around Michigan. Volunteers dressed in Halloween costumes will canvass their communities, encouraging supporters to help us Get Out The Vote in this crucial period! We'll also be encouraging those who are eligible to vote absentee - especially since November 1st, the day after, is the only Saturday where clerks will be open for absentee voting.

I am so pleased to support Senator Obama. With Senator Obama in the White House, Michigan will finally have a friend in the White House, and a leader who cares about the issues that matter most to me and all Michiganians. At a time when our automotive industry is facing unprecedented challenges, Senator Obama has pledged to partner with our automobile industry to help them research the fuel-efficient hybrid cars that will help America become energy independent. At a time when we've just passed legislation to help make Michigan the alternative energy capital of America, Senator Obama will invest in wind, solar, hydroelectric, and other clean forms of energy that Michigan is uniquely poised to lead in. He will finally enforce fair trade policies after the disastrous last eight years that have seen Michigan's jobs go on a slow boat to China, on the Internet to India, or on a fast track to Mexico. And finally, Senator Obama will unite Americans who are tired of the divisiveness that have helped the select few at the expense of the great many. I am proud to support Senator Obama for president, because I know Senator Obama will make our whole nation proud after such a catastrophic presidency for our nation.

I was in Muskegon, Grand Rapids, and Ionia on Sunday campaigning for Barack, kicked off a canvass in Brighton on Monday, and I'll be phone banking in Farmington Hills tonight. The enthusiasm for Barack - even in traditionally "red" parts of the state - is incredible. With so much at stake in this election, for Michigan and our country, it's so important to keep volunteering, to keep the momentum the Obama campaign has built in Michigan going. When I see such incredible support for Barack in West Michigan and Livingston County, I know that this campaign has tapped into something special, and we can't let all of those ready for change and hope down.

We need all of you to do as much as you can to ensure Senator Obama is our next president. There are over sixty Campaign for Change offices open around the state, and each one needs your help calling your neighbors, knocking on doors, and spreading the word about the positive change Senator Obama will bring to Michigan, and all of America.

My Grandfather was a Republican, my Father was a Republican, I was near Dwight Eisenhower when I was a child. I have been a Republican all of my life. BUT, this is NO LONGER my Grandfather's or Father's Republican party. I can plainly see that is NO LONGER my party either.
So, I am voting for Senator Obama and ALL of the Democrats on the national party (Senator Levin and Mr. Peters). I have 5 grown children that are registered to vote, are mostly Republican as well, but they TOO are voting for Senator Obama. I certainly hope that he wins in a HUGE LANDSIDE!

In Bay City, Judge Diane Marie Hathaway, Congressman Dale Kildee, State Representative Jeff Mayes, and NEA President Dennis Van Roekel will appear at a rally at 5:30 p.m., to talk about Barack's plans to upgrade public education for the 21st Century.

I'm writing my story in the form of a letter to Barack Obama, fully acknowledging that he will never read it. I only hope that at least one campaign worker will take it to heart and give himself or herselfa pat on the back.

        Dear Barack,
        Less than one week ago I was informed that I would have to take a week long business trip abroad, causing me to be absent from the polls on Nov. 4th. I came home and discussed the situation with my wife. Neither of us knew the protocol for absentee voting and with less than a week to figure it out and obtain a ballot, we thought that it would be impossible to accomplish. Our lives are very busy and although voting is important, it takes a back seat to our kids, education and work. As we finished our discussion we heard a knock on the door (no joke, the second we finished our discussion there was a man at our door). We tried to ignore the probable solicitation but my curiosity got the best of me. I opened the door to find one of your ground volunteers standing on my front porch.
After asking if I had decided on a candidate and tallying his sheet, he asked if I needed an absentee ballot application. I SURE DID!!! He gave me two applications, instructions on how to fill it out, a business card and directions to the local Obama HQ. I am happy to say that I just completed my absentee ballot and proudly declared my vote for you.
The point of this story is that although you won my vote with your inspiring message and unwavering determination to fight for the middle cllass, it was your volunteers and ground campaign that brought my vote to fruition. I hope that regardless of the outcome of this election, you can take the time to thank your volunteers for their diligence and determination. My story is proof that without these good people, the final tally in Michigan would be one less vote for Barack Obama.

Former State Senator Arthurhultz will begin his road trip by stopping by a Get Out the Vote sign up table at the Aquinas College.

He will then travel to Holland, stopping by Hope College and the Holland Campaign for Change office, encouraging supporters to get out the vote.

With only 8 days to go until the general election, Congressman Joe Knollenberg’s attacks against opponent Gary Peters continue to inaccurately claim that Barack Obama is at odds with Peters on the issue of health care.

“Like John McCain, Joe Knollenberg’s attacks are getting more desperate and couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Obama spokesperson Brad Carroll. “Barack Obama and Gary Peters both believe that we need to stand up to the big drug and insurance companies and provide quality, affordable health care for every American. The only thing that is extreme is John McCain’s plan that will tax health benefits for the first time in history, and lead 20 million workers to lose the coverage they get from their employers. Michigan voters are tired of the same old politics being practiced by Joe Knollenberg and are ready for independent leaders like Gary Peters who will bring real change to our state and to our country.”

The next president of the United States will face enormous challenges at a pivotal time in history. How the winning candidate answers those challenges – and whether he can rally America as it tries to dig its way out of a deep economic hole – will be crucial. After watching the two main contenders spar during this long and often arduous campaign, we feel Sen. Barack Obama is best suited to lead the nation.
This was not an easy decision for us. If this endorsement depended solely on the candidates’ views on certain key issues, along with their party platforms, we would endorse Sen. John McCain. But we consider other factors in making endorsements, factors such as temperament, intelligence and a candidate’s decision-making abilities during times of stress. Too many times during this campaign McCain just hasn’t displayed the sort of critical thinking and composure under fire that a commander-in-chief must possess. State Senator Liz Brater will help open the office, which will work with grassroots Ann Arbor Obama supporters to provide opportunities to participate in campaign events, to volunteer, and to serve as a resource for the community.

Also, Governor Granholm will campaign for Barack across West Michigan today, helping to kick off canvasses in Muskegon Heights, Grand Rapids, and Ionia. I am convinced this is the most important election in almost 50 years. John Kennedy was the last candidate to inspire me in the manner like Senator Obama. Like President Kennedy Senator Obama calls upon us to help each other. He calls us to serve one other. He has shaken to tired politics of self interest.
I have seen the “ownership society” divide us as a nation and community. It has split the haves from the have-nots, the weak from the powerful and the suburbs from the cities. Senator Obama’s call to set aside differences and see ourselves as the United States of America and not blue states or red states has ignited the fire of patriotism that I felt when campaigning as a member of Youth for Kennedy.
Once we work together as a nation we will again provide affordable education, institute adequate health care and again become the nation respected by friends and foes alike.

Working out of a local office is the best way to get involved, but if you can't make it in, you can use our online Neighbor to Neighbor tool to reach out to undecided voters in around the state by phone or in your neighborhood. Using Neighbor to Neighbor, you can print off walk lists, scripts, and maps to go door to door talking to your neighbors about the change Barack would bring - the most effective form of voter contact.

I have been a Steelworker for over 35 years and with retirement coming I worry about medical insurance more than anything at this time in my life. Barack Obama has a medical plan that will not only help future retirees but those retirees that are feeling the crunch of medical expenses today. I also feel with this plan he will help all businesses by lowering medical insurance premiums by offering insurance to all Americans.

Being a Union Activist my entire career I also find that Employee Free Choice Act co-sponsored by Senator Obama is what will bring union strength back and Barack Obama has pledged that he will sign it into law when he is elected President of the United States.

Know your rights forum in Detroit tomorrow

Barack Obama's Campaign for Change and Former Wayne County Commissioner Edna Bell will hold a Know Your Rights voter education forum in Detroit on Thursday, October 23. The campaign is holding Know Your Rights voter education forums across Michigan in an effort to educate Michigan voters about election laws and procedures, and their voting rights.

Each forum will give members of the community an opportunity to question the campaign’s voter education team about the voting process, and access voter education materials that they can reference as we get closer to Election Day. Forums will be held across the state over the coming week . The campaign launched the state-wide Know Your Rights forums in Lansing last week and has also held similar forums in Pontiac and Grand Rapids.

As a retired public school teacher of 30 years, I would obviously count education as one of my top priorities in terms of issues facing the new President. Several years ago I listened to an interview on NPR with Barack Obama, at the time a brand new member of the U.S. Senate. I had been following his career and was particularly interested in this interview because the topic was education. He spoke about the fact that there were some excellent places of learning in this country and we needed to study those places of success in order to find models for educational reform in districts that were failing. I was currently involved in a program that was developing lab sites where teachers could learn from other teachers, so I was impressed with his depth of understanding the power of professional learning communities. I looked up the names of some of the individuals advising him on educational matters and was further impressed by a line-up of professionals whose books I’d read and used in my own teaching practice. Barack continues to inspire me with his broad understanding of issues and his ability to find the brightest minds in the country to advise him on the details. I sincerely believe it will be the American children who will most benefit from an Obama administration.

In this time of economic peril coupled with all the other problems we are faced with, it makes sense that Barack Obama becomes the 44th president of the United States. An Obama presidency will respond decisively and effectively to the challenges we face.

We ask voters to look at the candidates based on their competence and judgment, not on the color of their skins.

Yes, the United States will make a tremendous leap with regard to race relations and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream if Obama is sent to the White House. But more importantly, this nation will make great progress if Obama is given the mandate on Nov 4., because he will tackle the war in Iraq, healthcare and the economy with taxpayers making the decisions, not Wall Street or Washington. That is the change he is campaigned on.

Michigan needs a change agent in Washington and Obama has shown that he cared for the state's economic crisis by continuing to campaign here, pushing among other things, energy and fuel efficiency in addressing the automotive industry's problems, while McCain took off. Know your rights forum in Grand Rapids tonight

Tonight, the Obama Campaign for Change will hold a Know Your Rights voter education forum in Grand Rapids at 5:30 p.m., featuring former Mayor of Detroit Dennis Archer and 2nd Ward City Commissioner David LaGrand. In an effort to educate Michigan citizens about election laws, procedures, and voting rights, the Campaign for Change is holding Know Your Rights forums across Michigan.

My First Canvas in 40 years

Hi! I’m “Josh from Michigan”’s mom and I just spent a great day knocking on doors for Obama. The last time I canvassed for a candidate it was Eugene McCarthy in 1968. So now it is 40 years later and I wondered what it would be like going door to door at 61 years old rather than 21. This is the first election in which I feel as passionately as I did then about the presidential candidate and the possibilities of change he offers our troubled country. No reason to worry: age was not an issue at all. It was an exhilarating experience to once again feel part of such an important movement.

My husband (who is 70) and I started at an Obama headquarters office where everyone could not have been nicer or more helpful. Scripts were shown to us as an example and we practiced with an expert. Then we went off to talk to undecided voters about why Obama is the right choice for our country. When we came across voters who were already Obama supporters, we encouraged them to get involved or gave information about absentee voting to Obama voters older than 60.

We found Obama and McCain supporters alike were mostly friendly to us, and seemed interested that at our age we cared enough to knock on doors. We got through the list more quickly than we thought we would, had a nice walk on a fall day, and very much felt the pleasure of being part of something so much bigger than ourselves. I felt a few people who were undecided might have been influenced by our clear belief in the importance of electing Barack Obama and I truly believe that we need every single vote. Polls don’t get presidents elected, people do.

Near the end of our canvassing, an older man (about my age or a little older) stopped me on the street to talk about his having already voted absentee for Obama and his own enthusiasm and hope about an Obama presidency. I asked him if he’d consider volunteering. He shook his head as if that was something he’d never consider at his age and we said goodbye. A few minutes later he ran down the street to catch up with me and ask :”so what kinds of things can volunteers do?” I answered that there are lots of different things from canvassing, phoning, working in the office, or even driving voters and he broke out in a grin and said, “you know, I think I’d really like to do some of that!”

If you are a middle aged or older supporter, I strongly recommend the volunteer experience for yourself as well as for Obama and the country. If you’re younger, send this blog on to your folks, or your aunt, uncle, or grandmother. Let’s all work together to make this the country we need and want. Let’s make sure Obama gets elected.

General Colin Powell endorses Barack!

This morning on Meet the Press, General Colin Powell (ret.) endorsed Barack Obama. Powell has served his country with distinction as a member of the Army for 35 years (including service for Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton as National Security Advisor and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), and as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. A Republican, Powell endorsed Barack saying:

I come to the conclusion that because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities--and we have to take that into account--as well as his substance--he has both style and substance--he has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president. I think he is a transformational figure. He is a new generation coming into the world--onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be voting for Senator Barack Obama.

At a time when America clearly needs some changes, Obama is not only proposing better ones but is also better suited to the job of getting them done. The Free Press endorses Democrat BARACK OBAMA for president.

Despite his relatively short time in public office, Obama, 47, has over the course of the general election campaign steadily articulated a progressive, pragmatic vision for this country, keyed to opportunities for the middle class, and demonstrated time and again that his approach to things is grounded in deliberation and reflection. He's a man clearly open to ideas and willing to search for the right answer to a problem rather than pursuing the expedient one.

His mantra of "change" is rooted in a well-grounded perspective on governing and leadership.

He proposes a pragmatic and layered approach, with a mix of public and private insurance options. Employers would be required to either offer health insurance to workers or contribute to the cost. A new National Health Insurance Exchange would give all Americans access to approved private plans with reasonable and stable premiums, deductibles and co-pays. Children would be required to have health insurance, a realistic goal with expansions of the State Children's Health Insurance Program and Medicaid.
To control costs without jeopardizing quality, Obama proposes to cut waste and increase efficiency through multiple measures, including proven health information technologies. Moreover, Obama understands the need to promote prevention and disease management through investments in clinical, community and public health system initiatives.

The Detroit News wrote a great story today about the Know Your Rights tour to make sure you're educated about Michigan's voter laws - make sure to read the entire article at the Detroit News, and visit our new website: Michigan Know Your Rights. It's your right to vote - and we only lose when we don't stand up for your rights!

A key message: "Even if you get challenged, here in Michigan you have an absolute right to vote and to have your vote counted on the spot. The only way you lose is if you get intimidated. Stand up for your rights and your vote will be counted."

Another note: wearing a campaign button or T-shirt to the polls doesn't prevent someone from casting a ballot; election workers simply will ask to have the pin removed or the shirt covered by a coat under rules that ban campaign paraphernalia within 100 feet of a polling place.

Under a new law, Michigan's requires voters to produce photo identification, such as a driver's license or college ID card. But those who lack them -- or just left them out in the car -- still can vote by signing an affidavit. Read the entire story in the Detroit News

He has been talking to all of his Republican friends about Barack and even managed to convert a few, especailly after all the nastiness from the McCain/Palin camp over the last week.

As small business owners and one of the many middle-class families making under $100K, we truly appreciate your support and understanding for people like us. We would love to grow and create more jobs but, the taxes, healthcare costs (and now the worsening economy) are preventing it. We like your plan and look forward to new opportunities for growth with you and Joe at the helm.
