Host or Attend a Service Event

This holiday season Organizing for America is encouraging our volunteers and Mainers across the state to participate in a volunteer service event to give back to those in need.

Whether your service includes giving blood, organizing a food drive, volunteering at a local soup kitchen, donating a winter coat, or some other form of assistance—every bit counts.

The Portland Donor Center of the American Red Cross, located at 524 Forest Avenue, is expecting our volunteers this Tuesday and Wednesday. You may give blood anytime from 12:00-7:00pm. Sign-ups and walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment you may call (207) 775-2367 or 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. You can also do so online at www.givelife.org.

For those located in the Bangor area—a collection drive for the local homeless shelter will be taking place between our volunteers and the Penobscot County Democrats.

If you would like to donate an item or help coordinate the collection drive please call Shelby at 207- 514-6653.

There will be drop off areas set up in the Bangor area, or you can bring your item to the PCDC annual holiday party on Saturday, Dec ember 19th, from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Issac Farrar Mansion on Union Street next to the YWCA.

As we prepare for the Senate to vote on health insurance reform OFA is looking for team members to join our Rapid Response initiative, a program that will focus on making phone calls to our senator's offices and to fellow Mainers across the state in the 72 hours leading up to the vote.

We have team leaders who will assist those interested in participating. Once the timeline of the vote is announced, we'll mobilize our volunteers and start calling.

Mainers Thank Congressman Michaud

Supporters of health insurance reform gathered in Lewiston Sunday afternoon to thank Representative Mike Michaud for his continued support of reform.

Michaud, who represents Maine's Second Congressional District, the largest House district east of the Mississippi River, was welcomed home by a crowd of enthusiastic and grateful constituents inside his local office.

The congressman's appearance came just over a week after the House passed a health reform bill, legislation Michaud called "too important to fail."

“Later tonight, I will say yes to expanding health care coverage to the thousands of small businesses and people in Maine who do not have it and, to those who do, making it more affordable and better,” Michaud said in a statement prior to the House vote.

“Today, I will say yes to ending the practice of denying coverage due to preexisting conditions and other abusive insurance industry abuses.”

Michaud answered several questions from OFA volunteers and others Sunday afternoon, articulating his views on the health insurance debate.

The U.S. Senate is expected to take-up the cause shortly.

We thank U.S. Representatives Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree for their continued support of health insurance reform.

The House voted late Saturday evening to move the process of health insurance reform forward, a step President Obama called “courageous.”

The president also asked the Senate to “take up the baton and bring this effort to the
finish line.”

Rep. Michaud issued a statement prior to Saturday’s vote, saying in part, “This work is too important to fail, and I could not in good conscience let the perfect be the enemy of the possible.”

Speaking on the floor of the House of the Representatives, Saturday, Rep. Pingree made her feelings clear, saying, “There can be no more delay.”

Dozens of enthusiastic supporters greeted U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree as she returned to Maine yesterday morning. A boisterous crowd of sign-waving Mainers welcomed the congresswoman minutes after her flight landed at Portland International Jetport.

The crowd gathered to thank Rep. Pingree for her support of health insurance reform. She thanked citizens who came out to greet her at the airport on Sunday morning. The U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of a reform bill on Saturday night.

Speaking on the floor of the House Saturday, Rep. Pingree said, “I’m here in the memory of my brother. He had no public option to choose. He did what so many young families did. They spent down their savings, they sold everything they had…so they could qualify for Medicaid because no doctor would see him without insurance.”

“I have often wondered,” she added, “if he would have survived if he had the medical care he needed.”

Speaking on the importance of the legislation, Rep. Pingree said, “This bill moves us much closer to a time when no one can be denied health care coverage because of a pre-existing condition, no one can be told you can’t have health care coverage, no one will have to go into personal bankruptcy....I am so proud to be here casting the vote that so many of my constituents have waited too long for,” the congresswoman said. “There can be no more delay.”

One Year Later

Wednesday marked one year since President Obama's historic election to the
White House.

The president reminded us that while Election Day 2008 was a
day of hope and possibility, it was also a "sobering one because we
knew even then that we faced an array of challenges that would test us
as a country."

As the president said, while we have a long way to go, we have "made
meaningful progress" towards rescuing the economy from the possibility
of imminent collapse, as the Recovery Act created or saved hundreds of
thousands of jobs.

While we're making progress the president has said that he will not
rest until every American who wants a job can find one.

So, as we celebrate the anniversary of the president's election to the
White House--let us pledge our commitment to a stabilized economy,
health insurance reform, clean energy, and the best possible education
for America's sons and daughters.

Volunteers Needed for Health Care Push

Following Tuesday's vote in the Senate Finance Committee, which included an "I" vote from Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine, her colleague, Senator Susan Collins, indicated that she is open to the possibility of supporting reform. Senator Snowe Votes to Move Health Care Reform Forward

The Senate Finance Committee voted today to move the process of health care reform forward. Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine was among those to vote in favor of legislation. President Obama thanked the senator for “both the political courage and the seriousness of
purpose that she's demonstrated throughout this process," while reminding us that now "is not the time to offer ourselves congratulations. Now is the time to dig in and work even harder to get this done."

Today is a significant victory in our ultimate quest to see real health insurance reform legislation on the president's desk in 2009, but it is far from the end of this process. Five committees have now passed a portion of reform, which makes our next step perhaps the most important. We thank our volunteers for helping us reach this important milestone, and we call on them to heed the president's call to service.

Together, we as a nation will get this done and bring quality and affordable coverage to millions of Americans who go without insurance and millions who struggle to obtain the coverage they have.

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram and The Kennebec Journal/Morning Sentinel endorsed Barack Obama for President today, giving Senator Obama the support of four major daily papers in Maine.

[Obama’s] health care plan, his proposal to cut taxes for the middle class while raising them on the wealthy and his desire to better regulate the financial markets all point in the right direction.

Just as important as his thoughtful positions on the issues, however, are the temperament and leadership qualities that Obama displayed in recent weeks.

And as the pressure built and the stakes grew, Obama remained calm.

McCain has talked a lot about his reputation as a maverick, but has veered little from his party's orthodoxy. His embracing of President Bush's tax cuts, which McCain once opposed out of concern for raising the budget deficit, is an example.

A long and hard-fought campaign has shown that inspirational leader to be Barack Obama.

As McCain grew more angry and desperate, Obama grew more calm and measured.

Today is Early Vote Day at the University of Maine-Orono. Any resident of Orono (not just students) can stop by the FFA Room in the Memorial Union and cast their ballot from 11AM to 7PM.

Maine Small Business Owners for Obama-Biden

Small Business Owners from across the state came out in support the Obama-Biden ticket today, citing their plan to help small businesses and start-up companies by improving access to capital, cutting health care costs, and investing in innovation and development.

“Barack Obama’s plan will cut taxes for small business and help employers provide health care for employees, gain critical access to capital, and create more jobs,” said Suzanne Kelly, Chair of Maine Small Business Owners for Obama. “The current financial crisis is making it hard for Maine small businesses to make payroll and keep up with rising costs. Obama’s plan will free up credit and encourage investment in small businesses and startups so that Maine companies can continue to grow and create good jobs that cannot be outsourced.”

Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s Plan for Small Businesses would provide tax credits, expand loan programs, lower health care costs, and promote rural small business growth.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden also recently proposed a Small Business Emergency Rescue Plan to increase credit for small businesses and help encourage job creation amid the financial crisis.

The Campus Coalition for Change Canvasses Bangor

With less than three weeks left, the Campus Coalition for Change is working every day to make sure Maine goes blue this November.

This weekend, students from across the state gathered at the Bangor Campaign for Change Office before heading out to canvass the local community.

Students from the University of Southern Maine, Bowdoin College, University of Maine-Farmington, Colby College, the College of the Atlantic, University of Maine-Orono, St. Joseph’s College, Husson College, Bates College, and University of Maine-Machias turned out to show their support.

Young people are playing an important role in the campaign, registering voters, holding Early Vote drives, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and talking to friends, parents, and grandparents about why they believe this year’s Democratic candidates are the best choice for their future.

The Campus Coalition for Change will be organizing on campuses throughout the state.

Mainers Call on McCain to Stop False Smears
and Focus on the Economic Issues Facing Maine Families.

BANGOR, ME – Mainers denounced the dishonorable and dishonest robo calls that the McCain campaign is making to Maine residents today, and called on McCain to stop the negative smears and focus on the critical economic issues facing Maine families. The campaign also urged Mainers to report negative calls to www.fightthesmears.com/report.

“I was an undecided voter until I got this disturbing call which crossed a line that should not be crossed. I will be voting for Barack Obama because I believe he has the character and integrity to lead this great nation and find real solutions to the challenges facing Mainers,” said Charles Anthony from Durham.

Mainers who received the call gathered in Bangor and Lewiston to urge McCain to give Mainers an honest debate on the issues.

“My 9-year-old son heard the message yesterday and frankly, this is not language I would even allow him to hear on TV or in a movie. It was very disturbing to me as a parent that someone who is running for president would allow a phone message to be left on families’ answering machines saying such dishonorable, disturbing things,” said David Anderson from Buckfield.

The Obama campaign received several reports from residents who received the calls. House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth urged Mainers to continue reporting these false attacks at www.fightthesmears.com/report.

“We encourage Mainers to continue reporting these false attacks. This election is too important to allow our opponent to distract Maine families from the critical differences between the two candidate’s plans for the economy,” said House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth. “What is really at stake is the fact that Obama will cut taxes for the middle class and small businesses, while McCain would deny tax relief to 101 million hardworking families, including 97 percent of seniors. It is no wonder that McCain is trying to divert attention from his plan to continue Bush’s failed economic policies.”

Oxford Maine Women for Obama Rally for Change

To kick off Women and the Economy Week, Maine Women for Obama and the Oxford County Dems held a rally in Bethel.

As they set up in the Gazebo on the common, no one knew what kind of a crowd to expect. Bethel is, after all, a small town and it was a sleepy weekday afternoon.

However Oxford County women knew the rally couldn't be missed and the crowd started pouring in.

Maine Women for Obama and the Oxford County Dems soon realized they had well over 100 supporters in attendance—mothers, grandmothers, wives, sisters, and daughters—rallying for Obama.

After her speech, Mary Herman, co-chair for the Maine Women for Obama group, urged everyone from great-grandmothers to the the youngest children out supporting their "Obama Mamas" to do everything they can to keep Maine blue this November.

Former Maine Mill and DHL Workers Protest Bush-McCain Economic Policies in Advance of Gov. Palin's Visit

Maine Workers who Lost Their Jobs Demand Change for the Economy
and Reject McCain’s Plan for More of the Same

OLD TOWN, ME– Maine DHL and mill workers who lost their jobs protested the failed Bush-McCain economic policies today in advance of Gov. Palin’s visit. State Representative Dick Blanchard joined the former DHL and mill workers at Georgia Pacific Paper Mill in Old Town to discuss the clear choice between Barack Obama’s plan for change and the McCain-Palin plan for more of the same.

John McCain and his Campaign Manager Rick Davis lobbied hard to help DHL and Deutsche Post succeed in their controversial takeover of Airborne. DHL then shut down its Brewer station in an effort to cut costs this past June. Steve Husson, a former DHL delivery driver, talked about the hardships the lay-offs caused himself and his coworkers.

“Barack Obama will strengthen our economy and help Mainers get back on their feet,” said Steve Husson, a former DHL delivery driver in Brewer. “We can’t afford four more years of the same failed policies that have sent our jobs overseas and made it harder and harder for Maine workers to get ahead.”

Under pressure from global competition, Georgia Pacific Corps closed its Old Town mill in 2006. The mill employed 400 Mainers. Former workers at the mill discussed how the closure affected the community, and why they believe Barack Obama will deliver real change for the economy.

“The high cost of energy and the outsourcing of jobs is hurting Maine workers,” said Mario Gilbert, who worked at the mill for 28 years. “The last thing we need is another four years with a president who encourages big corporations to move factories overseas and leaves us paying for it. Barack Obama will put American workers first once again.”

As Mainers struggle to get by under the faltering economy, John McCain has proposed yet another economic plan that rewards companies that send jobs overseas while leaving hardworking Mainers behind. McCain’s newest plan would provide no tax relief at all to101 million hardworking families while spending $300 billion to bail out irresponsible Wall Street Banks.

Barack Obama proposed an Economic Rescue Plan for the Middle Class this week, which will jumpstart job creation, deliver immediate relief for families, help homeowners stay in their homes, and stabilize the financial system.

“Barack Obama is the leader we can trust to get the economy back on track. He will create good jobs here at home, provide immediate relief for Maine families, and cut taxes for the middle class. That is the kind of change we need from our next president,” said State Rep. Dick Blanchard.

Maine Health Care Professionals for Obama

Today, Maine doctors, nurses, medical students, and health care professionals endorsed the Obama-Biden ticket because they believe that electing Senator Obama is the first step in ensuring that all Mainers have access to quality, affordable health care.

Led by Dr. Laurel Coleman, the "Maine Health Care Professionals for Obama" organizing committee will campaign for Obama across the state, meeting with voters and discussing why they believe Barack Obama's health care plan provides the solutions Maine families need.

"For too long, health care has been a privilege that many Mainers cannot afford. Barack Obama and Joe Biden will work to reduce health care costs and provide affordable coverage for all," said Dr. Coleman, "John McCain's plan would likely cause nearly 100,000 Mainers to lose their coverage. We simply cannot afford that."

Currently, more than 45 million Americans are uninsured, and millions more are underinsured. Senator Obama's health-care plan will provide affordable, accessible health care options to everyone and will reduce premiums by up to $2,500 for the typical family.

Studies have shown that John McCain's plan, which he admits will increase taxes on some individuals, could also force another 20 million Americans from their current employer-provided health care plan. In Maine, over 97,000 individuals would lose their current health care coverage under the McCain Plan.* In addition, John McCain's plan will tax your health care benefits for the first time in history.

Maine and other states in the Northeast would be especially hard-hit by John McCain's health care proposal because the costs of care are higher than elsewhere in the country, as reported in the Boston Globe yesterday. Because McCain's plan provides a flat tax credit that is not indexed to health inflation, Mainers are likely to see their benefits decline under his plan.

Gloria Reuben Helps Keep Maine Warm

It's only October, but the weather is getting colder and Mainers are already struggling with high home heating bills.

Today, in order to help support programs that offer home heating assistance, the Campaign for Change hosted breakfasts and canvasses across the state to benefit the Keep ME Warm Fund.

Mainers from all different walks of life visited Campaign for Change offices to discuss Obama's energy plan and how they could help their neighbors this winter.

Actress Gloria Reuben stopped by the Portland office to speak to fellow supporters and encourage them to not only keep up the great work, but to have their friends get involved as well. "Next time you come, please bring a friend. That way we can connect with twice as many people and make that much more of a difference."

Reuben, who is originally from Canada, good-naturedly reminded everyone that there are no excuses, "I hear a lot of people saying that they're just going to move to Canada. Well no offense, but we don't want you! We need each of you to go out, talk to your neighbors and get Obama elected."

Phone Banking for Barack and Biden

All this week, supporters have been visiting Campaign for Change offices to get involved and contact voters all across the state.

Joanna and her friends, all medical students, have very little free time. So, for her birthday Joanna requested that instead of presents or a party that they all come in and volunteer for Obama and Biden.

They piled into the Portland office and got to work... with a short break for cake, of course.

Maine Debate Watch Parties

Last night, across the state, Mainers tuned in to watch Barack Obama and John McCain face off in the first debate.

In Bangor, Brigadier General John Johns met with supporters for the Calling for a More Secure Americaphone bank beforehand.

Residents of Farmington joined together for a watch party and a debate of their own after things wrapped up in Mississippi.

In Portland, Maine Veterans for Change Co-Chair Adam Cote responded to the debate:

"In tonight's debate, Barack Obama showed that he is the right choice to lead America at this challenging time."

"While John McCain wants to continue the same failed Bush-Cheney foreign policies that have taken us down the wrong path, Sen. Obama will finish the fight against Al Qaeda, refocus on winning in Afghanistan, and end the war in Iraq responsibly. That is the leadership we need to get our country back on track, make America more secure, and restore our country's standing in the world."

Energy with Angus Town Hall Meeting

Dozens of Mainers gathered at the Lewiston yesterday for an Energy Solutions Town Hall Meeting with former Governor Angus King.

The meeting provided an open forum for residents to learn about Barack Obama’s plan to deliver relief from high home heating oil prices and build a secure, affordable, and clean energy future.

“Barack Obama’s energy plan will deliver immediate relief from high heating oil and gas prices, while jumpstarting investment in renewable energy production like wind power,” said Governor King. “Obama’s commitment to energy independence will create opportunities for Maine to emerge as a top leader in this new energy field, creating jobs, and helping to end our dependence on foreign oil. That is the kind of vision and leadership we need from our next president.”

Governor King also presented details of Obama’s New Energy for America Plan. The Plan would provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate for Maine Families, end our dependence on foreign oil, and make strategic investments in clean energy that will create 5 million new American jobs.

After listening to Governor King speak, attendees joined in a discussion about the tough choices Mainers will face this winter, and learned how they could get involved in the campaign.

Volunteer Spotlight: Leo Hilton

At least once per week, Leo Hilton visits the Portland Campaign for Change office to help in any way he can. Even though he won't be old enough to vote November 4th, Leo thinks it's important to do his part. In addition to volunteering at the office weekly, he and his mother canvass on the weekends.

Recently. Leo had a letter published in The Forecaster:

I’m 11 years old. One of the things I’m really interested in is science.

I’m writing this letter because I want to have better standards for fuel efficiency and carbon emissions. I think Sen. Barack Obama has good ideas for change. I support his policy to give tax breaks to buy plug-in hybrids and electric cars. I think this is good because if we use so much oil and pollute the environment we will run out of fuel and destroy the planet. To protect wildlife and forests, let’s set boundaries to stop or at least slow down how much pollution is allowed. One last thing: if you want to protect the moose and the places they live, then vote for Obama for president.

Maine Women for Obama gathered today at the Pepperclub Restaurant in Portland for a kick off event with Maine Senate Majority Leader Libby Mitchell and Senate President Beth Edmonds.

“Women can make the difference in this election,” said Senate Majority Leader Libby Mitchell. “Barack Obama and Joe Biden will deliver real solutions to the challenges affecting women and families. They will work to ensure that every working woman can earn a livable wage, protect the right to choose, expand the childcare tax credit, and invest in our children’s education. Those are the kind of common-sense policies that have been missing for the last eight years and that will greatly improve the everyday lives of Maine women and their families.”

The event topped off the Campaign for Change's Women’s Week of Action where women across Maine got involved to register voters, hold women-to-women phone banks, and knock on doors.

“I am very excited to be mobilizing Maine women to work toward ensuring an Obama-Biden victory on November 4th,” said Mary Herman, co-Chair of the group. “There are countless ways for women of all ages to get involved, including our Women-to-Women phone banks on Tuesday nights all across the state. The Maine Farmers for Obama group kicked off today at a Rural Roundtable featuring Governor Baldacci and Maine Commissioner of Agriculture Seth Bradstreet.

The group discussed Obama's plan to support rural communities and American agriculture and how it will benefit Maine.

"Barack Obama and Joe Biden understand how important agriculture is to Maine's economy, and the security and well-being of our nation," said Commissioner Bradstreet. "Obama and McCain have significant differences when it comes to rural and agricultural policy. Barack Obama's plan to maintain a producer safety net, spur renewable energy production, and protect independent producers is best suited to our needs in Maine."

Maine Farmers for Obama members will be leading efforts to mobilize support for Barack Obama in rural areas throughout the campaign.

Colby Campus Coalition for Change

Colby College students held their kickoff at a campus rally this weekend.

Hundreds of students showed up to register to vote and learn how they could get involved with the campaign at Colby and in the local community. Colby College Dems got creative, designing their own t-shirts, and offering live music from the Funk McCains and Spinners for Change.

Yes We Can! County Fair

Brunswick area supporters turned out this weekend for the Yes We Can! County Fair and Democratic Party Fundraiser.

Fair goers participated in a host of activities, including hay rides, face painting, and a pie eating contest as well as hearing speeches from Tom Allen, Chellie Pingree, and Speaker of the House Glen Cummings.

During the fair, amidst the activities, volunteers were busy registering new voters and encouraging supporters to request absentee ballots.

Mainers Think "Eight is Enough!"

Tonight, John McCain will accept the Republican Party's nomination. However, he won't be the only voice being heard because all across the state Mainers will be making calls to say “eight is enough!”

Volunteers have organized in every Campaign for Change office to phone bank for Barack and rally their communities for November.

Joe McHugh, who has been volunteering with his wife—in multiple states—since last November, said he wished he had even more time to give, “To me, McCain is just another four years of George Bush—and we can’t have that. People need change; someone who can offer more than the same failed policies that we’ve been living with for far too long, so I give whatever time I can to make sure they hear Obama’s message.”

Brooke, a full-time student at College of the Atlantic who also has a full-time internship, has made calls every night this week. “It’s great to know you can actually make a difference.”

Maine Tunes In

Last night, across the state, supporters watch Senator Barack Obama accept the Democratic nomination.

In downtown Portland, supporters of every kind gathered at the Empire Dine and Dance to watch Barack speak. As the crowd erupted in cheers, the band even took a break to join in.

From Machias to Fryeburg, people opened their homes and welcomed their neighbors to share in the historic moment. Supporters in York enjoyed dinner beforehand. Rep. Michaud dropped by a party in Lewiston, and the crowd in Auburn welcomed Barack—in cardboard form.

As Obama shared his plan for change and his vision for our country, Mainers watching did more than just cheer: they took the next step to ensure Barack Obama is our next President—they volunteered.

To win in November we need more than stickers or yard signs or cheering, we need each and every person that believes in change to join the campaign and reach out to people in their community. Delegate Spotlight: Scott Ruffner

Scott Ruffner was a member of the Maine delegation at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, where he heard Senator Barack Obama deliver the keynote address that propelled him into the national spotlight. Ruffner is serving as a delegate again this year, where he will see Senator Obama accept his party’s nomination for President of the United States tomorrow night.

Ruffner is a real estate broker from Bangor, Maine. He is a longtime supporter of Senator Obama, and is working to make Obama and other candidates successful in Maine this November.

“Barack Obama will restore fiscal responsibility to our government and get our economy back on track,” says Ruffner. “Obama will deliver real relief from high energy prices, provide quality and affordable health care for all Americans, and create opportunities for hardworking Mainers to get ahead. That’s the leadership we need to make real change happen.”

Tonight, the 88th anniversary of women earning the right to vote, Hillary Clinton will be speaking at the convention. Meet Betty Johnson, one of Senator Clinton's delegates:

Betty Johnson of Lincolnville has traveled to the Democratic National Convention as a Hillary Clinton delegate for Maine. Mrs. Johnson is a retired nurse and small business owner who runs an educational toy store in Belfast. She became active in Democratic politics in 1992, and has been active in Waldo County and Maine State politics. She has six children and five grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. A longtime supporter of President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton, Mrs. Johnson will work hard to elect Barack Obama as President.

“This is an historic Convention and campaign, and I am so grateful to be a part of it,” said Mrs. Johnson. “Here in Denver, there is a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm for our nominee, Barack Obama. He understands the challenges Mainers face and is offering the change that we need on issues like health care, social security, and the cost of energy. I will do everything I can to elect Barack Obama and the rest of our candidates this November.”

Delegate Spotlight: Ben Goodman

Today is the first day of the Democratic National Convention. All week we'll be highlighting delegates from Maine. Today you'll meet Ben Goodman, Maine's youngest delegate:

At 18, Ben Goodman is the youngest member of Maine’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention. He graduated from Kennebunk High School in 2008 and will be a freshman at the University of Maine at Orono this fall.

Goodman has been contributing to the Democratic Party since 2000, when he first began volunteering with his local town committee.
Since then, he has volunteered for numerous federal, state, and local campaigns. Senator Barack Obama has inspired Goodman to be more active than ever before. He has traveled to Iowa and New Hampshire, organized for Senator Obama before the February 10th caucus, and served as the Maine High School Coordinator for Students for Barack Obama. He is proud to have the opportunity to support Senator Obama in Denver.

“Barack Obama has energized and engaged young people and has given us an opportunity to play an active role in his campaign,” says Goodman. “On the issues that matter most- education, health care, and the environment- he is the candidate with a clear commitment to doing right by the next generation of Americans. Keeping Track

If somebody asked you, you probably wouldn't have to think about it.
But when a reporter asked John McCain how many houses he owns, he stumbled and said, "I think — I'll have my staff get to you."
If you're like the millions of people who are struggling to keep up with their mortgage, you might have a different perspective.
Not only does John McCain have trouble keeping track of all his houses, he looks at record gas prices and a crippling foreclosure crisis and thinks the economy is fundamentally "strong." And last weekend he said anyone making less than $5 million a year isn't rich.
This is the side of John McCain his campaign wants to hide.
So yesterday, we launched a TV ad to show everyone how out-of-touch John McCain is with the economic realities of regular Americans.
But if we're going to get the truth out, it's going to take all of us working together to make it happen.
Watch the ad and write a letter to your local newspaper exposing the real John McCain:

The more we hear from John McCain about the economy, the more we see just how out-of-touch he is.
You don't have to be an economist to understand that we can't afford eight more years, or four more years, or even one more year of the same failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place.

If John McCain understood what Americans are dealing with, he'd know that we need to be doing more.
Barack has a plan to cut taxes for middle class families by $1,000 and offer students who perform community service a $4,000 tax break to pay for college tuition. But John McCain's tax plan does nothing for 101 million middle class families.
Barack will set the minimum wage to rise with inflation. But John McCain is more concerned about making sure limits on campaign contributions rise with inflation — and he's voted against raising the minimum wage 19 times.
That's a difference that should be easy to remember.

“We have an historic opportunity to elect a top notch slate of candidates including Barack Obama, Tom Allen, and Chellie Pingree, who will make real change happen for Maine,” said Senate President Beth Edmonds.

“There is an unprecedented level grassroots activism happening in every corner of the state," Commissioner John Richardson added, "Many Mainers are getting involved for the first time because these Democratic candidates are offering real solutions to the challenges that Mainers face.”

Mainers Respond to McCain's Comments

Obama's Campaign for Change held a press conference at Bangor resident Kassie Stevens' home today, where Stevens, Representative Mike Dunn, and House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth responded to John McCain’s admission that he doesn’t know how many houses he owns.

“John McCain has so many houses that he can’t remember how many he owns,” said Representative Mike Dunn. “That doesn’t give me confidence that he understands how hard it is for most Mainers to pay for a home for their families. Every day, John McCain shows that he is completely out of touch with regular Americans, whether he’s offering billions more in tax breaks for the oil companies or declaring that multimillionaires are members of the middle class. We need a President who understands what we’re going through, and that’s Barack Obama.”
