As the health reform debate continues we are hearing of the continuous watering-down of the bill for the purpose of appeasing various Democrats including Senators Joe Lieberman, Mary Landreiu, Blanche Lincoln and Ben Nelson. But there is a process available to be used by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid which would make these obstructionists absolutely meaningless.

RECONCILIATION is the process by which a bill can be passed with 51 votes instead of 60. THIS is what we must DEMAND Reid uses to pass a bill with a strong, robust, National, competitive Public Option...the ONLY way to create affordable, competitive premiums for the 47 million Americans struggling throughout life without the basic right to be seen by a doctor. It is absolutely PATHETIC that hard-working Americans are forced to stand in long lines for as long as 8 hours, at make-shift free clinics just to be seen by a doctor, as recently occurred in Kansas City; a scene reminiscent of a third-world country.

This is a 2 part FIGHT....FIRST...we must FIGHT for a STRONG, Competitive Public Option. In the same call or email we must DEMAND that Harry Reid uses the RECONCILIATION process. As The President has said

The Time is NOW....44,000 Americans DIE each year due to the lack of affordable health care. This must end NOW...and it can...through RECONCILIATION !!!!

The Way Senate CAN Pass The Health Bill

For some reason the media and even our politicians keep pounding the vital importance of the Senate obtaining 60 votes in the Senate to pass the health care reform legislation. There's the non-stop 'what will (Traitor) Joe Lieberman do'...or 'will they get (R) Olympia Snowe'...or 'will Harry Reid get the 60 votes he needs...'? 60...60...60 !!! That's all we hear. I'm not sure if the media is trying to add drama to the health care issue in an attempt to stimulate audience ratings or if it's an orchestrated tactic in hopes of keeping Americans ill-informed through the direction of our great politicians, but the FACT is, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid DOES NOT need 60 votes to pass the health care bill but in fact ONLY 51- a simple majority, which makes a huge difference-through a procedure commonly used and known as RECONCILIATION.

Reconciliation is " a legislative process of the United States Senate intended to allow a contentious budget bill to be considered without being subject to filibuster (only needing 51 votes to pass). Because reconciliation limits debate and amendment, the process empowers the majority party ". The reconciliation procedure is limited to being used for budget related legislation that costs or raises substantial amounts of money. In the case of the Senate health care bill, that would include the expansion of Medicare or Medicaid, revenue-raising tax provisions, and even the creation of a public health insurance option, depending on how it's written. So the reconciliation procedure CAN be used to pass the health care bill with only 51 VOTES !

The downside of the bill being passed through this procedure is that, due to a ruling known as the Byrd Rule, non-budget legislation designed to regulate the insurance industry could not be included in the bill and would have to be voted on in a separate bill which would need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. But there is a strategy that can be used to overcome even this obstacle as described by Ryan Grimm of HuffPo:

    But there's another alternative, according to Martin Paone. Paone, who served as a Democratic Senate floor staffer for 29 years, has been advising Democrats as they craft their legislative strategy. He proposes that Democrats try to get 60 votes to waive the Byrd Rule -- which would then allow the inclusion of those non-budget-related provision in one bill that would require only 51 votes for final passage.

    What's the advantage? And why would any senator who opposes the entire bill vote for such a waiver? The answer can be found in the specific proposals that would be in violation of the Byrd Rule. Mostly, those would include reforms to the way the insurance industry operates -- for example, a ban on using preexisting conditions to deny coverage, or a law that insurance companies can't drop a client just because they get sick.

    Those are wildly popular reforms. Getting 60 votes to support those policies is much easier than getting 60 for a public health insurance option, which Republicans and some conservative Democrats oppose.

    Conservative senators such as Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) or Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) could, in voting for a Byrd Rule waiver, put themselves on the record as being in support of popular insurance industry reforms, while still opposing final passage of the bill -- a political strategy that may be appealing to them.

So, as the media continues their daily rant of how imperative it is that EVERY Democratic Senator vote yes on the health care bill remember one FACT that they seem to want to hide from We The People. There IS a way for the Senate to get the bill passed WITHOUT 60 votes...without Traitor Joe...without Olympia Snowe...without Mary Landrieu...making them absolutely meaningless in the debate.

Now, WE must let Harry Reid know that WE know that this option is in fact available to him. Call...Email...and DEMAND that if he feels he doesn't have the 60 votes needed to block the filibuster, then We The People...

RECONCILIATION !

When they, our great politicians realize that WE KNOW that they have this option...they will be FORCED to use it...even if they had other intentions (like letting the bill stall or even fail). Help the word RECONCILIATION become a household word. Spread the fact that this IS in fact an alternate means of the Senate getting the bill passed. Since day one, President Obama has stated that he would not be able to create Change on his own...that he would need OUR help. Time to do OUR part by DEMANDING that our politicians do EVERYTHING possible, including RECONCILIATION, to stop 44,000 Americans from DYING each year due to the lack of access to quality health care, by passing health care reform-with a strong public option-for all.

President Obama Signs Inclusive Hate Crimes Legislation

Today President Obama signed into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, legislation that will extend new federal protections to people who are victims of violent crime because of their sex or sexual orientation. It is an update to the federal hate crimes statute that Congress first passed in 1968. For the first time, the law that previously protected people from attacks motivated by race, religion or ethnicity will also protect gay, lesbian, transgender and disabled people.

The President will host a reception commemorating the enactment of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act in the East Room of the White House this evening. This afternoon, before signing the bill, he said:

"...After more than a decade of opposition and delay, we've passed inclusive hate crimes legislation to help protect our citizens from violence based on what they look like, who they love, how they pray, or who they are.
"I promised Judy Shepard, when she saw me in the Oval Office, that this day would come, and I'm glad that she and her husband Dennis could join us for this event. I'm also honored to have the family of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, who fought so hard for this legislation. And Vicki and Patrick, Kara, everybody who's here, I just want you all to know how proud we are of the work that Ted did to help this day -- make this day possible..."

Here’s an excerpt from an editorial in the Washington Post this morning:

PRESIDENT OBAMA is scheduled to sign Wednesday what is being described as the nation's first significant pro-gay rights legislation. Attached to the defense authorization act, the measure would add sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability to the list of protected classes under the 1969 federal hate-crimes law…
The law doesn't outlaw bigotry or "thought crimes." It applies only to "violent acts motivated by" the characteristics of the victim -- acts, not thoughts or speech. But crimes that target someone because of race or sexual orientation are more than offenses against that individual. They can terrorize whole communities.

Healthcare Reform Reality Check

Some people say that a public option is not the way to go because it will cost too much, its a ranting lie that will kill grandma, it is too socialist; the opposition to the public option needs a reality check.

1. One of the arguments against President Obama's plan is that it is simply too expensive and will drain our economy increasing the already massive deficit left behind by the Bush administration. Reality check? The health care reform plan will not add anything to the deficit, and in fact it is paid for upfront. Fiscal responsibility is written all over this reform, addressing the realistic need for money and still providing effective health care. The first step is to start off fixing what is broken within the system. Namely, returning to realistic health care costs, which have risen four times faster than inflation based on a big business principle of maximizing profit rather than health. President Obama's plan focuses on quality care rather than quantity, a system where successful treatment of patients is more important than wasteful big medical business fraud.
The plan will implement various delivery system reforms, making the medical system both more affordable and effective. Most importantly, the plan will bring about more effective preventative care which will reduce over-all long-term medical expenses; preventing illness before they happen and masively reducing the excessive future medical bills.

2. Clearly republicans are not in sync with the people. Some believe in the lies and propaganda from FOX NEWS and other right-wing whackjobs. This junk from the 'Death Panals' or 'Deathers', or that it will fund euthanasia and abortion, or the absurd notions that this plan will 'kill grandma' are the most ridiculous mythical arguments geared to convince the nearsighted right-wing zombies. Once again, right wing deception emerges. Why do people so easily fall for this junk? Can't people see how foolish and absurd these pack of lies are.

3. Is this socialism? Yes and no. It is socialistic in the nature that giving equal education to our children is socialism. It is socialistic in the manner which social security and care for the disabled is socialism. It is socialism as in creating an American nation with opportunity for the American dream. At the same time, it is not a complete socialistic system. It is socialsitic tools used properly within an over-all capitalistic framework. Not all forms of socialism are negative, and in fact many forms create positive results as any disabled person, senior citizen on social security, or a person who is a product of the an education system would necessarily attest to. It is creating opportunity and creating human dignity.

A civilization is measured by its characteristics, ethics, and culture. A mark of our civilization is how we as a society treat the least amongst us. The love we show within our treatment to our elderly, disabled, innocent children, and medically ill is a reflection of the value we place within human dignity.

My Sister Died Today
WITH Health Care Coverage
Could NOT Afford Life-Saving Medicine

Last Wednesday, my only sister was taken to emergency because of difficulty breathing. She's had a history of numerous illnesses ranging from lupus, seizures and osteoporosis but this particular visit was more related to her asthma, or so she thought. After being seen by the physician it was determined that her breathing difficulties were worse than anticipated as she was diagnosed with having a case of pneumonia. Feeling blessed to be able to get immediate medical care Karen was of the ranks of the fortunate known as the insured, meaning that she does in-fact have health care coverage which she acquired after being declared medically disabled after her thirty third seizure.

Yes, it took thirty three seizures, 5 appeals, 4 years and 3 lawyers but Karen Jones was finally declared disabled and was granted full disability which included full health care coverage, far from an easy feat but quite reassuring to Karen as she continued on through life. Unable to work due to her disability, Karen lived alone off of the $563 disability check each month as best she could, regularly robbing Peter to pay Paul, but all along able to make ends meet from check to check, and doing so always with a smile.

Even though times were really harder than Karen lead others to know she was thankful for the roof over her head, her access to medical care when needed, her monthly check and the ability to basically survive, which may be the reason that she developed the characteristic of never asking for help from others regardless of how much she may have needed it at times.

So she didn't like the fact that she had to trouble a neighbor to take her to emergency on Wednesday but she just couldn't breathe well. After the diagnosis that pneumonia was the culprit Karen signed the final papers as her prescription form was being handed to her. "Get this filled, take 4 of these per day and this will clear up your breathing" were the directions given as Karen prepared to go home, wheezing profusely along the way. The neighbor takes her directly to the pharmacy which is where Karen is told that this much needed medication will cost her $197. It's the end of the month, funds are extremely low, and Karen is far from having an extra couple hundred dollars laying around, so she goes home, takes some extra inhales from her breathing machine, and decides to toughen it out until the first of the month, just a few days away, when she'll get her next check and have the money to buy her medicine.

Being a prideful, independent woman Karen continues to tough it out each day never showing to others her true discomfort or need. All day long on Thursday and Friday Karen constantly thinks to herself how much she wishes she had been able to afford to buy the medicine as she does a mental countdown to the first of the month with every inhale through her machine. "I shouldn't have paid the light bill...I should have bought less food" are just a couple of the thoughts that haunt Karen as she figures ways she could have had the much needed money. And on that Friday night as she lay in bed she takes a few extra puffs from her breathing machine to get her through the night.

On the early eve of Saturday morning around 4:30 or so, Karen Jones, my only sister, died, age 51. Apparently, around 4:00 she had severe difficulties breathing, strained to call a neighbor who immediately got dressed and came down to the house, knocked on the door like crazy but there was no answer. Feeling great concern a call was made to the police who quickly arrived, gained access into the house, and there lie Karen, dead on the floor, beside her breathing machine.

Although we all were well aware of Karen's history of sicknesses I never expected my sister to die at such an early age. Of course I am of great sorrow and pain over the loss of my sister but I am also very angry with our health care system. I am angry, no actually in shock by the fact that my sister, Karen was declared to have full health care coverage through her disability benefits. But since it did not cover her medication, which she could not afford to buy out of pocket, my sister died with this so-called full coverage. What kind of full coverage does one really have if they are forced to pay for expensive medications out of their measly $563 monthly check ? I truly believe that if my sister had had her medication she would be alive today. It is absolutely disgraceful that our health care system has the gall to claim they are supplying full health care benefits to the disabled while simultaneous depriving them of the very medicines needed for survival.

Believe it or not, you could say Karen was actually one of the lucky ones only needing one medication compared to others who frequently need 2 and 3 medications, at costs which exceed their entire monthly check. So many who are sick, struggling and classified as fully covered are are in fact struggling helplessly, going without vitally important medications.

Throughout the health care reform debate many have argued that there is no need for strong reform of our system. Most others though do recognize the severe need to reform health care coverage in our country so that we no longer have 47 million Americans who have absolutely no health care at all. 47 million who do not have the basic right to get medical help when they are sick. This is sad and pathetic. Recently, an organization, RAM, known for offering free medical care in the Amazon has been forced to offer their services right here in our country. In Los Angeles, in Iowa and other U.S. locales, hard working Americans who can't afford health care coverage line-up by the thousands for free, much needed health care, similar to scenes in third world countries.

And while we must make certain that health care reform addresses the needs of the uncovered we must also make certain that we address the needs of the category now known as the under-covered. These are the people who have health care coverage but for one reason or another, tend to find out the hard way, usually when they are sick, that their coverage wasn't as 'full' as they thought.

Of course, it will haunt me forever as to why my sister didn't pick up the phone and ask me for the money, but folks that know her know, that's just Karen. And there are millions of other Karens out there, in desperate need and dire straits, but too independent to ask for much needed help. It is our responsibility, our duty to do everything we can to help the 47 million uncovered and the additional millions of under-covered to have the basic right to true health care coverage.

I hope my sister's passing did not include suffering. And now, even more, I hope that we all across this great land, will unite, do the right thing and pass a strong health reform bill which includes a strong public option so that we can curtail the suffering of millions more ahead. We must fight for the 47 million and the Karen Jones's of America. This is a battle that must be won !

REMEMBER...The 47 MILLION with NO Health Care Coverage

My Fellow Americans...It is VERY important that we stay focused on the #1 health problem in America. That is the 47 MILLION AMERICANS with NO HEALTH CARE at all !!!!! That should be focus #1. EXACTLY how will the 47M be able to receive the basic necessity of life...the ability to go to the doctor when one is sick. For those millions of you who have coverage, you have absolutely NO CLUE what life is like without that simple ability. How absolutely frightening a simple cough or headache can be...hoping that it doesn't turn into something that needs real medical care. Or when you get a severe toothache...but you can't go to the dentist so you fight through the agonizing pain....forced to ask friends if they have any penicillin pills that you can take....because you have to doctor on yourself.

PLEASE STAY FOCUSED my friends. The 47 million who are suffering represent our government's new Katrina. Will our gov't turn their backs...as they did with Katrina....or will they actually correct this third world like American disgrace ? That is THE question !

Rich Christians In An Age of Hunger!

Dear Friends,

I have recently been re-reading Dr. Ron Sider's seminal book, "Rich Christians In An Age of Hunger," in its most recent updated publication, 1999.

This is a life-changing, and challenging, book to read. I have become convinced that world hunger, both in and outside of the United States is indeed the human cause dearest to the heart of God. Yes, certainly there are others nearly as important, general poverty, world-wide disease, fair trade, human rights. However, hunger is certainly the most basic and important to human life itself. And yes, there are certainly causes that are particularly near and dear to my heart because they effect me directly and those I love dearly. However, again, while there are a Billion of my neighbors in the world who are literally starving to death, my personal causes admittedly shrink in importance. This does not mean that they are not important, and not a priority for me, but, it does mean that I am compelled to fully, biblically, prioritize my efforts if I am to feel certain that I am working where Christ would most want me to be working first, and where Christ is obviously working.

In my mind, conquering the world hunger issue first would provide the working basis to begin to conquer all of the remaining issues. We simply cannot expect starving people to highly desire to learn and incorporate effective economic practices, education, apporpriate health practices and focus on human rights issues. Also, in general, poverty is the root cause of disease, violence, terrorism and violations of basic human rights, and hunger is a prominent feature of poverty.

I hope many will be gripped by the Holy Spirit and galvanized to the cause of ending hunger in our time and for all time, so that we can then work toward ending poverty, effectively battle disease, conquer all issues of human rights so that each of our neighbors experiences freedom to be who they were created to be, and thereby end the causes that recruit for violence and terrorism.

I know that many of my peers in the upwardly mobile, white, Christian world still today only care to react to these issues in fear. For whatever reason we tend to recoil and act defensively when someone dares to suggest that we may play a significant role in the causes of world-wide hunger, poverty, disease and violence, and therefore play a significant role in the causes of terrorism. No matter how vehemently you attempt to deny this truth, you will never be able to escape it. I have come to peace with it and fully accept my responsibility in it all. And, therefore, have chosen to do all that is in my power to continue to work toward being part of the solutions, rather than living in denial and fear, which only leads to the continuation of the vicious cycle we are in.

I love my country, and I love my faith, and I certainly love Christ. It is Christ at work within me through His Holy Spirit that brings me to these convictions and gives me peace about my part in world-wide sin. I am a major patriot. I'm the crazy guy you see at the fireworks displays on July 4th standing, shouting, clapping, cheering, and yes, crying! I love the United States of America. However, historically, as much good as our country has done for the world, we have also carelessly wreaked havoc in the name of democracy, while the real impetus was our own selfish economic ambitions. Prior to that, my European ancestors, both governments and religions, also wreaked havoc throughout the world for centuries, all supposedly in the name of God, but actually for the same selfish ambitions. And, still today we are dealing with the aftermath of efforts in dominating the world, colonialism, slavery, wars, and even Enlightenment/Modernist philosophy that provided learned arguments for white supremacy.

I fully realize that many of my friends and family reading this, if they read it, are angry at this point that I would say such things. However, they are most certainly true. I don't mean to acuse or cause anger in anyone, but, rather, to motivate toward actively seeking out answers to these problems. I am not promoting that we grovel in the dust and moan and groan for our sins, although, that too would be in order. I am promoting that we simply begin to acknowledge the truth of these realities, to open our eyes and our hearts to repentance, and to take responsibility for our part in becoming part of the answers rather than ignoring and denying everything and thereby bolstering the continuation of the problems.

If you feel so moved, and desire to look more deeply into these things and take a step toward becoming part of Christ's life-giving, reconciling, restoring, mission of bringing about the Kingdom of God here and now in this current dimension, please do some reading and study, and praying, and fasting, and see if God's Holy Spirit doesn't begin to lead you to the same conclusions that I have come to. I have solidly decided that asking "What Would Jesus Do?" is not the correct question to ask. I now ask "What Is Jesus Doing?" and when I see it, I try to do likewise.

There are many good books on these topics, but I highly recommend Dr. Ron Sider's, "Rich Christians In An Age of Hunger," and Brian McLaren's, "Everything Must Change." I also highly recommend Brian McLaren's novel triology, "A New Kind of Christian," "The Story We Find Ourselves In," and "The Last Word, and the Word After That." I also highly recommend any works by Rev. Jim Wallis, of Sojourners/Call to Renewal, especially, "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It!" Lining the easement surrounding the Buffetville church, Fleps and his congregation of relatives greeted approaching families with jeers, derisive laughter, and signs declaring “New car owners die, God laughs!” and “New car owners burn in hell!” As services began, the Eastburro group began chanting, “God hates new car owners!”

Lilly Thesbit, a retired school teacher who has been attending Buffetville Baptist Church all her life, was distressed by the group and its message. “I don’t understand it,” she told reporters. “They’re ruining my Easter. Nobody even noticed my new hat.”

Others were equally dismayed. “I don’t know why they have to come here on Easter Sunday of all days,” said 17-year-old Joey Dick. “I mean, if they’ve got a problem with our pastor’s new Acura, why not protest it on the third Sunday in Pentecost or something? Why Easter?”

The offending vehicle, which Pastor Bill McCune of Buffetville Baptist Church purchased less than a month ago, was parked throughout the protest in the designated pastor’s space behind the church. Police were on the scene to make sure that none of the protesters vandalized the car.

“It’s bad theology,” declared Pastor Bill. “They read a few scattered passages in the Bible that say we should care for the poor, and they interpret it to mean I can’t enjoy a new luxury car with my hard-earned money. I mean yes, technically I could make do with a used car, and technically the money I saved could be sent to Oxfam and would help save the lives of a few thousand malnourished children. But come on. I really liked the leather seats!”

Fleps has a different view. “Jesus tells us that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And you remember what he told the young rich man who asked about what he needed to do to earn eternal life? Jesus told him to sell all his possessions and give it all to the poor.”

“It’s not just about the pastor’s new car,” Fleps continues. “That’s a symbol of a bigger problem. Just look at all these people flouncing into church in their brand new outfits. Look at all those fancy cars in the parking lot! These people who claim to be Christians are spending money on luxuries while children are starving! It’s an abomination! The least he could've done is gotten himself a hybrid car.”

But Steve Lisp, one of the deacons at Buffetville Baptist, thinks that for Pastor Bill to keep driving that six-year-old Cadillac “would give the wrong message.”

“We’re not one of those poor churches that can’t afford to pay our pastor a nice salary,” insists Lisp. “Half our congregation belongs to the country club!”

“I don’t understand why they can’t be like those Wetsboro folks, and protest real problems like gay marriage,” says Pastor Bill. “I mean, the homosexuals are destroying this country, right? The Bible’s full of stuff that condemns those homos. Me, I’m just living the American dream. God wants his obedient followers to have nice things.”

“For a pastor,” says Fleps, “Bill doesn’t know his Bible very well, does he? Jesus never mentions homosexuality. And aside from a couple of verses in Leviticus, a book that no Christian today treats as authoritative, the only unambiguous mention of same-sex acts is a passing comment in Romans. But the Bible is obsessed with caring for the poor. Let’s face it, if you’re going to be biblical about things, the controversy shouldn’t be about gay pastors, but about pastors who enjoy luxuries while there are people in the world who go to bed hungry. That’s why we’re here.”

But little Jenny Fisher, who attends Buffetville Middle School, knows the truth of the matter. “They just want attention. I mean look at them. They’re dressed like the nerd contingent at my school. They weren’t popular in school, and now they’ve found a way to get people to pay attention to them.”

Letter to An Unnamed Evangelical Leader... Garry Wills

Those who know me are aware that I am a voracious reader. A book I have recently acquired and am currently enjoying is What Jesus Meant, by author Garry Wills. "Garry Wills has written many acclaimed works on religion. His Papal Sin and Why I Am Catholic were New York Times bestsellers. He studied for the priesthood, took his doctorate in the classics, and taught Greek for many years at the Johns Hopkins University. He is now Professor of History Emeritus at Northwestern University. His works on American history have received many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Lincoln at Gettysburg." (…quoted from the jacket of the book)

While reading this morning I came across this letter that Garry includes in his book from an unnamed writer to an Evangelical leader. Garry admits not knowing the source of the letter, but seems to simply omit the recipient. Still, the letter is so poignant that Garry felt it was well worth including in his book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought many of you would as well. Here it is straight from Garry's book, What Jesus Meant, C. 2006 by Garry Wills, published by Penguin Group, Inc., chapter 2 The Work Begins, sub-chapter Are Some Still Unclean?, pages 33 – 35.

"Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination – end of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is: how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor to the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there degrees of abomination?
7. Leviticus 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Leviticus 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Leviticus 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Leviticus 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev. 24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws (Lev. 20:14)?

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident that you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging."

Election Night Celebration!

I'm so excited! I'm back and forth between shouting and crying! I'm so surprised by my reaction right now, because for a long time I've been relatively comfortable that Barak Obama would indeed be our next President of the United States of America; in fact, I've projected to many of you that I even felt it would be by at least somewhat of a landslide. So, I really kind of thought that this evening would be for me somewhat ho hum since I didn't think it would be that big of a surprise. But, wow! Even though pretty much all that I expected to happen did indeed happen, I find myself in almost a bit of shock! I have really truly been so amazingly and pleasantly and emotionally surprised and quite simply engulfed in this uncontrollable desire to worship! to praise! to celebrate!

I know many of you must feel similarly. I remember my young childhood when I began to realize that I was significantly "different" somehow from my other male friends, and how that "difference" somehow made me afraid. I still don't know how I knew it, but somehow I knew that if others found out about how I felt "different" that I would experience rejection and exclusion on many levels. So, I made heroic efforts to hide and cover my "difference." I remember that as I entered into puberty and I had a significant hormonal imbalance that caused me to physically develop differently from other males my age in such a way that was easily noticeable and I began to receive more and more public teasing and experienced threats and was often called names by other kids. So, I made every effort to hide this unsightly "difference" as best I could, usually to no avail.

These two significant battles and struggles in my life, however, provided a special opportunity for me to get a taste of what life is like for those persons who do not fit the expectations of those who hold power in our world. As frightened as I was at the time, as a young white boy, because of "busing" (or the government mandated integration of public schools), and because I was the son of a poor evangelical preacher and therefore could not afford to go to a private school like the majority of my white friends, I was bused across town to Harding Middle School, in Oklahoma City, OK, an historical African-American school, then on to Northeast High School, also an historical African-American school, both located in the "African-American" section of the city. During those seven years, from 1972 through 1979, in the very early days of the social experiments of racial integration, I had the great honor of experiencing close up the struggles, the pain, and the suffering of "otherness" through many dearly loved African-American friends. I was able to overcome my fear and embrace them, first of all because they embraced me, and also because I found solidarity with them in my own pain and suffering. Interestingly, nearly all of the teasing and name calling and threats that I received during these years came from other white males. Very little came from white females and almost none came from black males or females. I was embraced, I now know, as a fellow "other." In addition, because of this significant connection with black students and teachers alike, I was also able to see their hope and their desire to rise above the systems that sought to keep them down. I was able to learn from them how to find hope in myself.

I will never forget the significance of one particular elder black student, Cassell Lawson. Barak Obama reminds me of Cassell. As I began my freshman year at Northeast High School, I was a shell of who I am today. I was a frightened, somewhat self-defeated, very self-conscious kid. I didn't feel very good about myself. I was a nominal Christian because I had little real faith of my own. I wore my hair long, straggly, and didn't care much for overall cleanliness. I dressed the part of what we called in those days, "greasers," or "druggies," a careless disheveled look. I was trying to be a cigarette smoker, and was coming very close to experimenting with illegal drugs. Cassell was a junior and was highly respected throughout the school, very popular, and the President of the Marching Band, the pride of Northeast High School. I was, above all else, a lover of music, and a dedicated trombonist, so I could not resist the call of the band. The Northeast High School, Mighty Viking, Marching Band was known throughout Oklahoma as one of the finest show bands in the state, modeled after colleges such as Grambling and Florida A&M. A true "black" show band. Of the other 16 white students who came into the band as freshmen with me, all but 4 had dropped out by the end of the first semester. It either proved too much for them, too "different" for them, or, in many cases, too "frightening" for them. We white people have little or no experience being in the minority, and we usually don't do very well when we suddenly find ourselves in that situation. I, however, loved music too much to quit. I was determined to stick it out.

One Friday early in the second semester that year, Cassell asked me to take a walk with him around the track of the school's football field, just he and I. As we walked, Cassell talked and I listened. I knew it was an honor just to have him choose me to spend time with. He told me about the band, and our notorious director, Dr. Alvin Jernigan, a tough, creative, black, former marine. He explained to me how difficult it had been to keep white students in the band. He expressed appreciation for me, and most importantly he expressed respect for me for having stuck it out so far. He told me that he really wanted me to stay with the band. He said that he was highly impressed by not only my musicianship, but also my ability to stick it out in the face of difficult odds. He said that this showed that I had real true character. He also said that he was impressed by my sense of rhythm and ability to move, "for a white guy!" I took that as a very high compliment. I was elated; I can still remember the feeling I had throughout my entire body and soul hearing these kind and encouraging words from this guy that I respected so much. Then, suddenly, Cassell turned very serious, and stopped me there on the track where we stood and looked me in the eye. He said, "Greg, here's what bothers me about you... you don't act or carry yourself like the kind of guy I just described. You come to school looking like you just crawled out of bed, didn't shower, and put on whatever clothes you touched first. You smoke cigarettes and hang out with some guys of questionable character who are known to smoke weed and do other drugs. You mope around with your head hung, no smile on your face and no apparent joy and sense of destination. Greg, the way you look most of the time and act most of the time doesn't jive with the character I think is really there inside of you." He said, "Greg, I've heard the names those guys call you and what they mess with you about. But, man, they don't matter; and what they think about you doesn't matter either. You have to take responsibility for your life and decide whether you're going to listen to idiots like that and let them determine who you are, or whether you listen to the hope you know you have within you, and use the inner power that God gave you to rise above all that and be who God calls you to be." Then to drive it home to me he said, "I've heard from others that you're supposed to be a Christian. Aren't Christians supposed to live victoriously no matter what?! Listen to me, man, clean up your act and be the guy I see and that God sees! If you will do that, you will become a leader, and we really need white guys like you to lead."

Well, that weekend, I got a haircut; I started cleaning myself and doing all I could to look as good as I could. I threw out my cigarettes (I was never a real smoker anyway), and I actually started practicing walking with my head up and shoulders back and I rediscovered my natural smile. That talk changed everything for me! I decided then, and I've never turned back, that I would be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and his true teachings and do what he actually demonstrated in his life, no matter where it took me. When the bigots would call me names and taunt me, I would just smile and ignore them. They didn't bother me anymore! You see, I had just connected for the very first time in my life, with someone I respected who had actually experienced more pain than I had ever dreamed of and was rising above it! I had experienced true solidarity with another "other." It was life-changing, no, it was world-changing for me!

I went on in my sophomore year to become the Band's first white low brass section leader. Then, in my junior year, I was elected by the Band as its first white Band President (Cassell's former role). Then, in my senior year, I was elected the first white Drum major, and not only that, but the first white Drum major of any historically black Marching Show Band, at least that we knew of. During that year I was approached by scouts offering potential scholarships in music to both Grambling University and Florida A&M, both of which were seeking to diversify their student bodies.

I know that many of you have to have stories like that. How you've chosen to rise above your pain. I also know that there are some of us who have even experienced pain caused by those we should find solidarity with. I don't know about you, but, tonight's wonderful victory has caused me to pause and recall the hope of something greater that is within each of us. I am so thankful. Aren't you? Thank you, God, for loving me and for not giving up on me no matter what. Thank you, Barak Obama, for rising above all your pain and suffering and clinging to that hope that is within you. Thank you, America, for continually proving to the world that hope always wins, eventually. Thank you, friends, and fellow "others," for allowing me to be part of your world and to help you to find hope. Thank you, Cassell Lawson, for caring enough to be honest, and in so doing, showing me the power of hope, and changing not only my life, but also the lives of the many "others" that Christ has touched through me!

The President announced today the 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilan honor. The President praised the recipients for breaking down barriers and lifting up their fellow citizens: "These outstanding men and women represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds. Their tremendous accomplishments span fields from science to sports, from fine arts to foreign affairs. Yet they share one overarching trait: Each has been an agent of change. Each saw an imperfect world and set about improving it, often overcoming great obstacles along the way."The awards will be presented on August 12. Here is a little bit about this year’s recipients:

Nancy Goodman Brinker is the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s leading breast cancer grassroots organization.
Pedro José Greer, Jr. is the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Florida International University School of Medicine. He is also the founder of Camillus Health Concern, an agency that provides medical care to over 10,000 homeless and low-income patients each year in Miami.
Stephen Hawking is an internationally-recognized theoretical physicist, and is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University.
Jack Kemp was a U.S. Congressman, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and Republican Nominee for Vice President in 1996. He died in May, 2009
Sen. Edward Kennedy is one of the longest-serving and greatest Senators of all time. He has worked tirelessly for health care reform over the last five decades.
Billie Jean King is known for winning the famous "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, and championing gender equality issues not only in sports, but in all aspects of life.

Janet Davison Rowley, M.D., is the Blum Riese Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology and Human Genetics at the University of Chicago. She discovered the first consistent chromosome translocation in a human cancer.
Desmond Tutu is widely regarded as "South Africa’s moral conscience," and was a leading anti-apartheid activist in South Africa.
Muhammad Yunus is a global leader in anti-poverty efforts, and pioneered the use of "micro-loans" to provide credit to poor individuals.

No Participation Until President Obama Addresses GLBT Campaign Promises

I’ve unsubscribed from barackobama.com not because I hate our president or because I feel betrayed, but because my participation in his campaign is dependent on his agenda. It is not unconditional. When the president’s attention once again includes GLBT equality, as I’m confident it will, I will once again become an avid participant.

I also made repeated donations and did everything I could to spread the President's message. During the campaign, I often found myself defending the President to friends who were suspicious of his level of support for gay rights. I find myself defending him still, but it's getting harder and harder to do.

I'm no single-issue voter; I recognize how many pressing issues our country has on its plate. But the President promised to be a "fierce advocate" for gay Americans. Instead, we've had nothing but fierce silence--until last week, when we were fiercely attacked in Justice's DOMA brief. I'm still a strong supporter of the President, but the frequent emails from administration officials about other issues are just a constant reminder of what it hasn't addressed. I prefer not to receive them unless and until the President starts to make good on his promises to gay Americans.

Affordability is obviously STILL the missing LINK to stablize the real estate, mortage, lending... industries.

Greenspan did his experimentations to prove his Economic Theory and Bernanke is working on fixing the ill effects of such "theory".

In truth, there are ways to allow "affordability" to take place again, and the experts do know how. The question is are THEY willing to make affordability happen instead of keep on trying to bury this administration by attempting to link the BAILout$$$ and the fall of mortages to this administration.

They can make the mortage notes longer ... irregardless of the life expectancy of the borrower by having "ballon" payments at reasonable time say every 7 years and have it amortized over the current "maximum". There's NO DOUBT that such SAFE and Responsible mortage options will again bring our economy back, as Housing is STILL the major purchase and American Dream.

Michael Steele encourages hatred and violence

The chairman of the Republican Party, Michael Steele, yesterday made clear the Republican Party is going to go on the attack against the Gay community (B,L,G,T). Steele said that a winning talking point for conservatives is to claim that gay marriage costs straights money and jobs. Steele said that the proper response to any gay couple that gets married from a straight person should be, "Hey! You're costing me money!"

Healthcare and other benefits provided to gay spouses will come out of the pockets of straights. This is the hateful, and stupid, "Master strategy" to lead Republicans out of the wilderness. But the optimism is tempered by a feeling of resignation about two of the most difficult challenges he faces: reviving the economy and ending United States military involvement in Iraq. Most Americans say Mr. Obama has begun to make progress on both fronts, but many do not expect either the recession or the war to be over by the end of his term.

It is not unusual for new presidents to enjoy substantial public support at this point in their tenure. But Mr. Obama's 68 percent job approval rating is higher than that of any recent president at the 100-day mark. Mr. Bush had the approval of 56 percent of the public at this juncture.

But while Americans clearly have faith in Mr. Obama, the poll revealed something of a disconnect between what the public thinks the president has already accomplished and what it expects him to achieve.

Fewer than half of those surveyed, 48 percent, said Mr. Obama had begun to make progress on one of his major campaign promises, changing the way business is conducted in Washington. And just 39 percent said he had begun to make progress on another major promise, cutting taxes for middle-class Americans, even though the stimulus bill he signed into law does include a middle class tax cut.

Mr. Obama will mark his 100th day in office on Wednesday with a trip to St. Louis and a prime time news conference, where aides say he will make the case that he has made "a down payment" on fixing the nation's biggest problems. The poll found that Americans seem to share that view, suggesting the White House has been effective at casting Mr. Obama as an agent of change, while persuading the public that change will take time.

There, an appeals court last week upheld a plan to make state workers take two furlough days by June 30, the end of the fiscal map year, and 12 more in the next fiscal year.

"But," Ms. Rosenstein added, "furloughs are fundamentally a cut in pay. And furloughs are a cut in service. If you map don't have people working, the work isn't going to magically get done."

The longest state furloughs so far appear to be 24 days in Alabama, the same number proposed in Minnesota.

Private companies, too, are increasingly turning to furloughs as they try to ride out the recession. A Watson Wyatt survey released this week found that 17 percent of 141 companies surveyed had imposed furloughs in April, map up from 11 percent in February.

But with state and local governments, furloughs can affect critical services like police and fire protection, prison guard duty and hospital care. States and local governments have to select which workers they furlough, and this can undermine the idea that furloughs spread the pain equally.

For the most part, it is too soon to judge the impact of furloughs on the delivery of public services. But there are early signs of a ripple effect.

One stark example is at the Social Security Administration, a program paid for by the federal government but administered by state workers. Officials said this month that in seven states, 2,700 of those workers had been furloughed, further delaying the processing of tens of thousands of disability claims, which already take an average of 488 days to resolve.

Services in several California counties were already curbed because of layoffs before the state instituted furloughs for the first time in its history in February, when it ordered 90 percent of its 238,000 employees map to take off two days of unpaid leave per month.

Now, at the Orange County Social Services Agency, Herman Martinez, an eligibility specialist and president of the local unit of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said the agency could not keep up with applications for public assistance, which have only grown in the economic downturn.
