Outraged Over Lack of Respect for President Obama

I am outragedged at the treatment and lack of respect toward the President of the United States of America. Barack Obama is a man who worked tirelessly to advance himself and eventually become the most powerful man in our country. He truly is the epitome of the American dream. How disheartening and appalling it is to witness a total lack of respect toward him!

This is the first time a president was banned from speaking in some schools. Presidents have been speaking to school children for years and this is the only time it caused such a ruckus. This is America, the land of the free, and we are censoring our own president? This is a clear act of racism and it makes me feel very upset to see people behaving this way.

These attacks from the right wing have gone too far and have created a baseless frenzy which has led to blatant lack of respect toward President Obama. How must it look to other countries when they see congressmen texting on their cell phones and shouting during a speech by our president? Rep. Joe Wilson's comments were deplorable, something a child would do, not a member of the government. And, it seems hypocritical of Rep. Wilson to call the president a liar, and yet fail to mention that he receives most of his political backing from the same lobbying groups that have ties to the insurance companies. I believe Rep. Wilson should resign after his behavior during President Obama's speech. How can he control his state when he cannot control his mouth?

Health Care Reform

Two years ago, I pulled into the driveway and found my son surrounded by my husband and kids, his hand wrapped up in a blood soaked towel. I ran up the driveway where I found out that he had cut his hand with the lawnmower. My son, who had just graduated with an Associates Degree in automotive technology, had partially amputated three fingers on his dominant hand. Minutes later, the ambulance came and rushed us to a hospital where the hand surgeon came in and was able to reattach his fingers. That should be the end of the story, but that was when my nightmare began.

Weeks later, I received a thirty-thousand dollar bill which was denied by the insurance company. The reason was that, although we went to an in-network hospital, the hand surgeon was out of network. After multiple calls, letters, trips to the personnel office where I worked and sleepless nights, the insurance company agreed to review the claim. Weeks later, they agreed to honor the out-of-network physician, but they continued to deny the claim stating that he had too many surgeries in one day. There are no words to describe the low feeling in the pit of my stomach when I read that letter. The next few weeks were spent trying to plead with the not-so-friendly insurance representatives to re-review the claim as well as stop, or at least hinder, the bills and threatening non-payment notices that were coming in the mail every week.

I was happy to find out later that the insurance company decided to pay the claim. Feeling a sense of relief, I called the doctor’s office and let them know the check would be coming soon. The next day, I received a letter from the insurance company denying the eight thousand dollar anesthesia bill. I guess they felt my son should have been awake during the operation. I was back at square one. Once I fought this denial, they refused to pay the follow-up care and rehabilitation bill.

In the end, I ended up paying thousands for the follow up care, which the insurance company adamantly refused to pay for, and deductibles. Not only was it a great financial burden, it also cost me many sleepless nights, many tears, many fights and a lot of worry. This whole process lasted over a year.

I am, however, very aware that I am lucky that I had insurance for my son. I know very well that if I did not have insurance, the hand surgeon would not have come to the hospital and worked to reattach my son’s fingers. He would have simply deemed the fingers nonviable and the surgical resident on call would have amputated them, thus ruining my son’s career that he worked so hard to attain. I work in the medical profession. I have seen this situation many times before.

Is this the high standard of care that we are fighting to protect? Is healthcare reform really so bad? I definitely think an overhaul of the system is necessary to prevent situations like mine, and to help the unfortunate victims who have lost their jobs and benefits. Not just as Americans, but as human beings, we should have a moral responsibility and obligation to care for our fellow man.

I am outraged at the attacks led by the Republican base. I believe it is the height of hipocrisy to claim to be the voice of religious rights and then deny insurance coverage to millions of Americans. Isn't the backbone of every religion to "Love One Another"?

I am also appalled at the constant barrage of criticisms of the Obama administration. Although I do not agree with the handling of every situation, I do support most of the president's agenda. I am appalled at the attacks and outrageous lies presented by the GOP and the media coverage of them.

Sadly, after the election, I became complacent and slowly stopped visiting barackobama.com and attending events. I realize now, that our grass roots movement didn't stop when President Obama took office. It is just as, or maybe more, important now as ever. I refueled, and ready to become as active as I was. I hope you are just as angry as me and will continue to fight for what is right.

Regardless of its isotopic composition, the minimum amount of plutonium required to make a pure fission nuclear explosive, with a yield equivalent to one to 25 kilotons of chemical high explosives, is quite small, on the order of 1 to 3 kilograms (kg), with the exact amount depending on the level of design expertise and the desired nuclear explosive yield. The minimum amount of highly enriched uranium required is a few times larger—5 to 10kg.

While far from ideal for military applications, the isotopic composition of the plutonium typically produced in civil power reactors does not pose a serious obstacle to fabricating efficient and powerful weapons, as well as crude terrorist devices.

Obama: Let AIG Fail, they are evil!

Plain and simple, Obama sold out to the corporate interests (who probably helped him rise to power in the first place) when he bailed out AIG under the excuse that they're "too big to fail"

They failed. So clearly they're not too big for it. Pumping more money into it? That costs money, just the same as people would suffer from them failing. So.. both have the same outcome, people lose money. Only one includes AIG doing well, the other them failing. So why care? I don't think most Americans care. So why bail them out? Armageddon if we don't? I doubt it.

AIG spent OUR tax money on bonuses, spas, vacation, coke and hookers. They are laughing in our faces, with OUR money. Obama was "shocked". Yeah right.

And now AIG is denying health care to private contractors injured in Iraq / Afghanistan. Because they weren't soldiers. Technically, no. But they were shooting people and being shot at. And they had a coverage plan for it. What does AIG do? Denies them healthcare.

Why do we have a private healthcare industry? Why do we have private insurance? Because if we had universal healthcare like other countries everyone would be waiting in line for months to get health care! Well thats better than being denied!

Obama continues the use of warrentless wiretapping and evesdropping, using the same BS excuse that Bush used: State Secrets.

Well, we have to wait and see how this turns out.. but it's a little dissapointing.

If you ask me, the NSA will ALWAYS be spying where they see the need, regardless of how legal it is, if the president officially authorized it, etc. We have black ops, covert operations, world wide survaillance. I have no doubt that they can get all the information they need without having widespread wire-tapping and evesdropping (or looking at our library records, recording all our emails, etc)

The NSA is capable of monitoring, flagging, deciphering all the intel it needs. They don't need any help from Patriot Acts or Presidential "state secrets"

I have no doubt that under both presidents, the 'primary' goal was a reasonable one: find terrorists. But again, they do NOT need blanket searches, putting EVERYONE in the spotlight. People have a right to privacy, it's in our Bill of Rights.

Under Bush, liberal watch groups, peace advocates, community organizers, and such people were closely monitored. How do we have any assurances that Obama wouldn't do the same? Monitor those that dissagree with him? Those that may come out with information that he doesn't want out?

It's not about terrorism. They have other, and plentiful means to combat terrorism abroad and at home (currently he touts the use of peaceful negotiations while continuing the combatant practices of Bush)

It's about our privacy and our rights, and about holding Obama accountable to the campaign promises he made.

Greetings President Obama lovers and supporters: We do love him, do we not? What a ride that was, it's taken me nearly 4 months now, to come completly back to my senses, sort of.

It was a real out and out dog fight, but we prevailed. One for the good guys. So I felt I'd just give a couple of my thoughts on what has taken place so far. For my local hamlet here in Northern CA called

Redding, CA.

Unemployment here must be 20% by now. The figures, I'm told do not count those that have already

fallen from the unemployment rolls, or the nearly 30,000 GI's returning home nearly every month. I'm sort of happy about the winding down of the Iraqi war but the gearing up in Aftganistan concerns me, as war is not peace, is it.

I applaud President Obama and his crew. No president has done so much, so fast with so little. Of course locally he is under attack in the local Record Searchlight paper's opionion section, "he will spend us to death" they say. Well I have to continully remind them, so we each owe $45,000, but we owed $39,000 of it before Bush even got out of office, at least this time some money went for

health, welfare, transportation, education, conservation and renewable energy generation, Instead of some big black hole somewhere in the world.

Cheney is really pissing me off. Someone needs to tie a can to his tail and send him back to the

hole he crawled out of. I hope Joe keeps banging on him everytime he resurfaces.

As to the energy plan for America. I found a project, sent info to to Whitehouse, Sent info to the

Progress for America people, sent info of my renewable plan to the people spreading stimulus funds around in St. Louis County and then to the Democratic party in St. Louis...All communication

went unanswered, in spite of the fact, I, a 30 year pioneer in conservation and solar generation

actually had a plan, I'm sure could put thousands of Americans back to work...I get no answer from anyone. Not too impressed with that response. We did better by them, when they asked us to

respond to their needs...

Obama continues the use of Mercenary Firms!

Not only has there been too little action done by Obama to stop the use of BlackWater (now XE) and other mercenary firms in Iraq, but now he is supporting HIS OWN MERCENARY FIRM.

Obama has not made an effort to condemn, or prosecute Black Water. Blackwater has been used to KILL CIVILIANS. They have acted on their own, and from commands, to kill. They have not been held accountable. This was one of Bush's biggest crimes against humanity.

So surely Obama would condemn this, and never condone such actions?

Obama has stated that he will continue to use private military contractors (AKA MERCENARIES) in addition to leaving LOTS of troops in Iraq AFTER THE "WITHDRAW" (how it is a withdraw when there are 30,000+ troops left behind is beyond me)

Now Obama has retracted, and Clinton is sponsoring legislation to ban the use of private contractors in Iraq. But it seems to me they really only mean that contractors who ARE NOT HELD RESPONSIBLE will not be used. Or maybe he just wants Bush's mercenary firms out, and his own in?

Hypocritical? I think very. Mercenaries are a TERRIBLE idea, regardless of if you claim they will be held accountable. They are a private military. And there are certain things that SHOULD NOT BE PRIVATIZED. Obama has run a campaign on openness and government control over privatization: for health-care, for education, for the military.

Why the contradiction? Why the no-bid government contract, just the same as Bush used for Blackwater and Haliburton?

Pardon Ted Stevens!? How about pardoning Tim DeChristopher??

Ted Stevens was convicted of criminal misconduct. He almost got reelected anyway (another story)

His case is being dropped, which amounts to a complete pardon. I realize that Obama is not directly responsible.

Obama IS responsible for the continued prosectution of Tim DeCrhistopher, though. Tim is a political environmental activist, who staged a fake bidding on AN ILLEGAL AUCTION under the Bush administration to buy Federal Wildlife Reserve for the use of oil excavation. Tim waited and waited for activists to come forward to stop the illegal auction of the wildlife reserve. Nobody did, so he had to. He made fake bids, putting a stall in the process.

He is an environmental hero. The auction was wrong in the first place. Now he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Many thought that Obama would pardon him, where Bush supported his criminal procecution. However, the prosecution recently went through with no word from Obama.

This is VERY HYPOCRITICAL for a president who states that civil disobedience cannot be punished so punitively, who believes we need a green future, to lesson our dependence on oil, to cherish our wildlife.

Barrack Obama ignores his constituents in Online Town Hall Meeting

I had very high faith in Obama to do the right thing with the Online Town hall meeting. It seemed like such a good idea and an easy concept: Ask people what they think, and listen to them.

However, as critics predicted ahead of time, the questions Obama was going to answer were pre-determined. He could guarantee that certain questions would be asked, he just had to wait and see how they were worded. But his responses were all planned, and the questions selected were planned.

This is the opposite of what he stated his intentions were. He did not listen to the people, or take their questions seriously. Instead, he merely read a prepared statement in the guise of an online town hall meeting. Town Hall meetins themselves are usually screened and questions prepared, but he stated that this would be different.

Three questions in particular were completely ignored, but others we ignored in part. For instance, questions regarding how to treat the Auto Industry, how best to spend money on them (or to not) and how best to make them move forward. Many were worded differently, with different emphases. He took a blakent response to these questions, ignoring many comments about smaller companies.

Many asked whether it makes any sense to bail out the companies that are failing. After all, this is the market. They failed for a reason: They had two decades to figure out that using oil is not a permanent solution, and begin to make real progress. They did not. They sold out to the oil industry, killed the electric car in 2000, and continued making gas guzzlers. If we paid for gas as we should, as other parts of the world do, which is unsibsidized, we would ALWAYS be paying double what we pay. Do you think there would have been a bigger push for the elctric car in 2000 if gas was not disproportionately low from government subsidies? This just passes the buck on to our next generations, as we do with many things. So why was gas subsidized? To keep people thinking it was cheap, and that it'd be around forever, and that we don't NEED to have a new solution.

So what did the car companies do? They delayed the inevitable, they got greedy, they sacrificed long term servivability for short term gains. For this, they deserve to go bankrupt. What about the workers? Well, pay them while they look for another job, just as other people are on welfare.

Other companies are working on other solutions, hydrogen power cells, alternative fuel sources. The free market will sort this out, and it won't take as long as people think. The vacuum left from the failing car companies would be quickly filled.

But Obama did not address these questions. Instead he only addressed those that dealt with how to monitor the EXISTING car companies, while ignoring the questions that regarded focusing on NEW car companies. The message? That he doesn't care about the free market figuring this out, nor what his constituents say on the matter, nor about any REAL GREEN SOLUTIONS. Pushing the car companies (that have failed from greed) to make expensive electric and hybrid cars, and SLOWLY push out new alternatives, WILL NOT HELP. Other companies are offering cheaper, better solutions. But he is ignoring those, pushing them aside, and assuming (wrongly) that the only way forward is to work with, and reward, the existing companies.

The other two questions that Obama ignored he did much more overtly.

One is regarding Industrial Hemp. Hemp has been used for thousands of years for everything from clothes, rope, car parts, fuel, paper, to food. Every country in the world grows it except America. America can import it and use it, but not grow it.

Industrial Hemp is the true green future. It could solve many problems at once: economic, farming, food, fuel.. Many questions were asked regarding Industrial Hemp (which contains less than 1% THC - the active ingredient in smoked marijuana) Many questions regarded seperating the two, removing the myths, and taking Industrial Hemp off the banned drug list. Obama chose not to even MENTION this.

Instead, he made a joke about the SINGLE BIGGEST QUESTION asked.

This question was about decriminalizing marijuana.

There were legitimate questions and statements. Economically, it could save tons of money on the war on drugs, make lots from taxing. Ethically, it would keep people out of prison for a relatively minor crime. Pratically, it would allow the government to CONTROL it, who sells it (cut out the gangs and the cross border drug trafficking) who can smoke it (age limits) what they can do while smoking (test for recent use is available now, and could be used by traffick cops to determine if someone has used before driving, just like alcohol)

So there were many legitimate concerns raised (the most salient being economic, the VAST amount of money that could be generated by the government)

Obama, however, made a crack about "this shows who the internet users are" as if EVERYONE who voted for these questions was currently smoking a bong. Many people stated clearly that they were not users. Regardless, who is asking should not concern him. The fact is that it was asked by the people HE SAID HE WOULD LISTEN TO. The Media claimed that the polls were hijacked. Obama claimed that it was not a real concern of the American people.

Clearly, it was a concern. One that will not go away. And for all the valid reasons offered by many, the most obvious is economic. He asked for economic solutions, and three were provided to him that he BLATANTLY IGNORED.

I say SHAME ON OBAMA. He has done much good since coming into office, but is FALLING FAR SHORT of where he promised. He uses unmanned drones to kill civilians in Pakistan. He continues many policies he said he would end. He has NOT checked bills line by line as he said. He has NOT allowed for 3-4 days for the public to view and critique any bill before signing. He has NOT cut spending on porky projects.

And most importantly: HE HAS NOT LISTENED TO THE PEOPLE!

Speak out against this! Next online town hall, remind Obama that we will not be silenced so easily! If he wants to claim to be OUR president, he has to listen to us. And not just us, the people who voted for him, but all Americans who have a valid point.

The people want REAL GREEN CARS. The big companies FAILED to provide them, and giving them money will lead to more of the same, and the change will be SLOW AND EXPENSIVE. There's already better alternatives, give them a chance!

The people want INDUSTRIAL HEMP. It is the real green future crop. It grows fast, has plenty of uses, is less harmful to the environment than cotton, prevents deforestation, and has been used for thousands of years! It can be imported but not grown!

The people want DECRIMINALIZED AND TAXED MARIJUANA. Keeping it as a prohibited drug increases crime and mis-use, just as prohibited alcohol did. It is less harmful and addictive than both alcohol and nicotine. It can be controlled, taxed, and monitored.

State of the Union - Calling us Forward

Barack is set to hit the airwaves in one hour with his first keynote address to both houses of Congress. This is why we elected him, because he knows how to tell everyone what needs to be said, even when the truths are difficult to hear. He knows how to express himself quite well-- so much more clearly and credibly than our recently departed Duuhbya. It's been so long we almost forgot what it could be like to have a President we can believe in. Well, we're finally on the journey now.

I realize the times are tough because of the mess we've inherited from W's 8 long years of ineptitude and slamming the national ship from shoal to reef and back again. It will take time and collective work, some sacrifices and faith in our ability as Americans working together for the common good, to patch the hull and get our ship of state out into the main channel where she belongs. Bailout is a good analogy here... If we work together, we can get this job done!

I like some of the details of the Barack Obama 10 year energy plan, but it is too long for us. We need to implement some changes right now. If we don't, this world will not be here too long. This is not a game. We have destroyed the arctic wildlife to the point where the polar bears are becoming extinct. Now to some it would be easier to just ignore it and say that it won't affect us. But don't you understand that one species affects the other? If one dies off, it affects others. If we let the earth die, we die with it. It is not up to us to determine how we are to affect life on this planet. It is up to the man above. How are we to become stewards of the land if we don't care.

We think we have 30 years before the melting of the arctic affects the human race. But how do we know that? Don't you know that the speed at which ice melts increases with time? This means that the arctic is melting at an exponential rate. We must plan to live in a different climate. Some land that is dry will become non-existant.

I am a disabled married gay buddhist European American whose first language was French. Our family lived in Europe before moving to Terra Linda in 1955, where I attended kindergarten and first grade. We also lived in Montgomery, Alabama; Walpole, Massachusetts; and at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

I also worked on a dairy farm and studied in a Tibetan monastery, in Switzerland.

After living in New York City for ten years, I returned to the Bay Area to care for both of my parents, and for a partner who died of AIDS at age 48.

I’ve worked and volunteered in a variety of fields – government, corporate, non-profit, proprietorship, as a mailman, secretary, financial analyst, loan administrator, volunteer and events coordinator, executive assistant, and office administrator – and volunteered in a number of Democratic presidential campaigns, including the Kucinich campaign of 2004.

I have been a Barack Obama supporter since his convention address of 2004, working on his campaign since February 2007. Foreign Oil? No Such Thing

So if being at the mercy of the cost of a barrel of oil is hurting us, why don't we become less dependant on foreign oil? Foreign oil? Well I hate the break the news to you honey, but there is no such thing as foreign oil. Oil is a commodity. The price of oil is the same accross the whole wide world honey. And when the dollar is "worth" less than half of what it was 3 years ago, you can't pay the same amount for a barrel of oil as you did then. Please don't be fooled by low gas prices now.

Alternative Energy - The Real Economic Stimulus Package

Gas prices are low. So who cares about alternative energy. As long as we can put put gas in our cars for less than two bucks a gallon, who gives a damn about the environment or anything else?

Many have heard and felt that the above statement rings true for them. When you have only two dollars left in your savings account after bills are paid, who cares about what some tree hugging hippie has to say. Less money at the pump means more money in your pocket. That's real life when you have barely enough money to feed your family. That's real life when you own a small trucking company that will go bankrupt from rising fuel prices.

But we must learn to look beyond the here and now. I may sound like I am taking a jab at oil companies, but it must be said. When you depend on mainly one source of fuel, you are at the mercy of that one source. Our economy is heavily affected by what we and the transportation industry pays for fuel. Trucking can do all they can to keep the consumer from getting hit, but they can only do so much. It is the trucking company and owner operator that deliver the loads to the grocery and department stores. The trucking companies must eventually pass the cost to their customer which are your local grocery stores. Then the grocery and department stores pass the extra cost directly to the consumer. Wether gas is 10 cents or $10 a gallon, why take that chance?

Some analysts say oil will definitely go back up to $100 a barrel sometime next year. So you say, let's wait until it goes back up again, then maybe we'll know for sure that the governmnet will be so concerned that it will do something other than have a 10 year plan that will have little or no effect on the current situation.

Well who do I think I am? Do I think I can do a better job than the president of the United States? OK honey. Just pretend that my name is President Robin V. Williams. President Robin V. Williams will take a good chunk of those billions of dollars and invest it in companies that have already looked into alternative sources of energy and food production. I will invest in programs that would offer paid training those who have lost there jobs in this economic mess and put those people to work in the type of companies that will make the future safer, our economy strong and our environment better. Billions of dollars will be invested in local transportation that has more frequent and efficient routes. Well, people hate to use mass transit, they say. Well, I don't mean to oversimplify this, but I believe more people will ride the bus if the bus came more than once an hour.

Solutions to our economic problems

We all know, the government has passed a 700 billion dollar bailout program. What we don't know is how they are planning to use our money to put this plan into action. I have come up with some solutions to this dilemma. Here they are, short and to the point.

First and foremost, nothing is going to be solved by throwing money at big banks and institutions. It might save a few high-paying jobs but that's about it. Instead, everyone currently with a mortgage should be given a check for a lump sum, say five to ten-thousand dollars. This money should be paid directly to the mortgage company. This includes families who are in arrears on their mortgage, as well as families who are in good standing. It will not only help to keep families in their homes, but will also help out people who have been paying faithfully, thereby freeing up money they have to spend on goods and services. And the monies from these checks will help to keep big banks and mortgage companies afloat.

Second, drill baby drill is old, outdated, and foolish. The answer to restarting our economy is in alternative energy. We need to focus our attention on researching, creating infrastructure, and managing this industry. This would create all kinds of jobs for hard-working Americans, all of which cannot be outsourced, as our wind and solar power is ours. And at the end of the day, we lose our dependance on foreign oil.

Third, I do not think the big three in detroit should be bailed out. They got into this mess, some companies, such as Chrysler, more than once, and they should pay the consequences. After years of making big, fuel-consuming trucks and cars, and ignoring new technologies, I think it is time to make these companies take responsibility for their actions. Big companies should not expect small consumers pay for their mistakes!

Fimally, I am not a financial person. I am a nurse, who, for ten years, was a single mother. I, single-handedly, managed to buy a house, raise my kids, balance a budget and teach my children to work hard and be responsible. I was not perfect, but at the end of the day, I was expected to take responsibility for my actions and I learned from my mistakes. I think these qualities are missing in many of our economic and government leaders.

Mike Rogers is doing the same thing in his campaign to get re-elected in Alabama's 3rd district. Please if you can help bring attention to this serious threat, and disappointing rhetoric.

Looks like Mike Rogers doesn't want Michelle Bachmann to get all the attention. He is making a very strong case for why he should be sharing the headlines with her. Especially with statements like, "I'm going to be the biggest pain in Nancy Pelosi's Ass and I can't wait to go back (to Congress)" (Oct 15th) He called DailyKos and the DCC liberal extremist groups. Barack Obama is a man of integrity. Our belief is that when all the facts about nuclear power are presented to him clearly, that he will reject it as an option.

The large utilities eager to build nuclear power plants are now suddenly pressing Congress about global warming. Very convenient. But is nuclear power a solution for the problem of global warming? Hmmm, No.

1)Nuclear power plants are too expensive to build. The nuclear power industry refuses to accept responsibility for the unique risks of nuclear power and demands massive federal subsidies so that they can rake in profits on their suspect investments. To quote the Rocky Mountain Institute (rmi.org) position on nuclear power: "Contrary to an argument nuclear apologists have recently taken to making, nuclear power isn't a good way to curb climate change. The power they produce is so expensive that the same money invested in efficiency or even natural-gas-fired power plants would offset much more climate change." Quoting the Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC): "Our national electricity needs could be met, while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent or more, through a combination of increased energy efficiency, wind power, solar power, advanced coal-fired plants with carbon capture and storage, and high-efficiency natural gas turbines."

2)Nuclear power is extremely unsafe. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has acknowledged in a reference document "that early containment failure cannot be ruled out with high confidence for any of the plants." Even with the most technologically advanced checks and safeties, eventually some critical part of everything man makes fails. If an explosion occurs at a gas-fired or coal-fired plant, this is not good. But if a nuclear reactor melts down and breaks through its containment vessel, we have at least a regional catastrophe. Large areas of necessary habitable land are rendered uninhabitable, and people die of radiation-caused cancer.

3)To again quote the Rocky Mountain Institute's position on nuclear power: "Nuclear power poses significant problems of radioactive waste disposal."

4)Quoting the NRDC: "Plutonium is a normal by-product of electricity production in conventional reactors. Thus, the same reactors and fuel-processing facilities that are used for energy production can also be used for the manufacture of weapons." "Perhaps the most serious of all the problems that would be exacerbated by dramatically increasing global nuclear capacity is the threat of nuclear proliferation."

The son of William F. Buckley has decided—shock!—to vote for a Democrat.

Let me be the latest conservative/libertarian/whatever to leap onto the Barack Obama bandwagon. It’s a good thing my dear old mum and pup are no longer alive. They’d cut off my allowance.

Or would they? But let’s get that part out of the way. The only reason my vote would be of any interest to anyone is that my last name happens to be Buckley—a name I inherited. So in the event anyone notices or cares, the headline will be: “William F. Buckley’s Son Says He Is Pro-Obama.” I know, I know: It lacks the throw-weight of “Ron Reagan Jr. to Address Democratic Convention,” but it’ll have to do.

Dear Pup once said to me, “You know, I’ve spent my entire life time separating the Right from the kooks.”

I am—drum roll, please, cue trumpets—making this announcement in the cyberpages of The Daily Beast (what joy to be writing for a publication so named!) rather than in the pages of National Review, where I write the back-page column. For a reason: My colleague, the superb and very dishy Kathleen Parker, recently wrote in National Review Online a column stating what John Cleese as Basil Fawlty would call “the bleeding obvious”: namely, that Sarah Palin is an embarrassment, and a dangerous one at that. She’s not exactly alone. New York Times columnist David Brooks, who began his career at NR, just called Governor Palin “a cancer on the Republican Party.”

As for Kathleen, she has to date received 12,000 (quite literally) foam-at-the-mouth hate-emails. One correspondent, if that’s quite the right word, suggested that Kathleen’s mother should have aborted her and tossed the fetus into a Dumpster. There’s Socratic dialogue for you. Dear Pup once said to me sighfully after a right-winger who fancied himself a WFB protégé had said something transcendently and provocatively cretinous, “You know, I’ve spent my entire life time separating the Right from the kooks.” Well, the dear man did his best. At any rate, I don’t have the kidney at the moment for 12,000 emails saying how good it is he’s no longer alive to see his Judas of a son endorse for the presidency a covert Muslim who pals around with the Weather Underground. So, you’re reading it here first.

As to the particulars, assuming anyone gives a fig, here goes:

I have known John McCain personally since 1982. I wrote a well-received speech for him. Earlier this year, I wrote in The New York Times—I’m beginning to sound like Paul Krugman, who cannot begin a column without saying, “As I warned the world in my last column...”—a highly favorable Op-Ed about McCain, taking Rush Limbaugh and the others in the Right Wing Sanhedrin to task for going after McCain for being insufficiently conservative. I don’t—still—doubt that McCain’s instincts remain fundamentally conservative. But the problem is otherwise.

McCain rose to power on his personality and biography. He was authentic. He spoke truth to power. He told the media they were “jerks” (a sure sign of authenticity, to say nothing of good taste; we are jerks). He was real. He was unconventional. He embraced former anti-war leaders. He brought resolution to the awful missing-POW business. He brought about normalization with Vietnam—his former torturers! Yes, he erred in accepting plane rides and vacations from Charles Keating, but then, having been cleared on technicalities, groveled in apology before the nation. He told me across a lunch table, “The Keating business was much worse than my five and a half years in Hanoi, because I at least walked away from that with my honor.” Your heart went out to the guy. I thought at the time, God, this guy should be president someday.

A year ago, when everyone, including the man I’m about to endorse, was caterwauling to get out of Iraq on the next available flight, John McCain, practically alone, said no, no—bad move. Surge. It seemed a suicidal position to take, an act of political bravery of the kind you don’t see a whole lot of anymore.

But that was—sigh—then. John McCain has changed. He said, famously, apropos the Republican debacle post-1994, “We came to Washington to change it, and Washington changed us.” This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget “by the end of my first term.” Who, really, believes that? Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis. His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?

All this is genuinely saddening, and for the country is perhaps even tragic, for America ought, really, to be governed by men like John McCain—who have spent their entire lives in its service, even willing to give the last full measure of their devotion to it. If he goes out losing ugly, it will be beyond tragic, graffiti on a marble bust.

As for Senator Obama: He has exhibited throughout a “first-class temperament,”pace Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.’s famous comment about FDR. As for his intellect, well, he’s a Harvard man, though that’s sure as heck no guarantee of anything, these days. Vietnam was brought to you by Harvard and (one or two) Yale men. As for our current adventure in Mesopotamia, consider this lustrous alumni roster. Bush 43: Yale. Rumsfeld: Princeton. Paul Bremer: Yale and Harvard. What do they all have in common? Andover! The best and the brightest.

I’ve read Obama’s books, and they are first-rate. He is that rara avis, the politician who writes his own books. Imagine. He is also a lefty. I am not. I am a small-government conservative who clings tenaciously and old-fashionedly to the idea that one ought to have balanced budgets. On abortion, gay marriage, et al, I’m libertarian. I believe with my sage and epigrammatic friend P.J. O’Rourke that a government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take it all away.

But having a first-class temperament and a first-class intellect, President Obama will (I pray, secularly) surely understand that traditional left-politics aren’t going to get us out of this pit we’ve dug for ourselves. If he raises taxes and throws up tariff walls and opens the coffers of the DNC to bribe-money from the special interest groups against whom he has (somewhat disingenuously) railed during the campaign trail, then he will almost certainly reap a whirlwind that will make Katrina look like a balmy summer zephyr.

Obama has in him—I think, despite his sometimes airy-fairy “We are the people we have been waiting for” silly rhetoric—the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for.

So, I wish him all the best. We are all in this together. Necessity is the mother of bipartisanship. And so, for the first time in my life, I’ll be pulling the Democratic lever in November. As the saying goes, God save the United States of America.

As I watched the news this morning, I was frustrated to the extent the McCain camp has now turned from the real issues to again focus on smear tactics and negativity. What we need is positive change and a President that will focus on the needs of the national and global community. I know it is probably a sign of desperation but those of us for Obama must continue to stay strong in getting the word out and continuing the momentum to election day!

Rep's want to blame 9/11, but if we had just tightened our security, sent the CIA after Bin Laden.. Well, that's tuesday morning quarterbacking. I've made a film. Yes a film.. not a video. I just Cast my Ballot for the most important Election of my Life!

I am happy to say I have just been an integral part of the most important election in my lifetime. A very historic moment is nearing, and my voice for Change We Can Believe In has been placed into the official ballot counting for the Great State Of Ohio.

Barack Obama will be the president for the people, whom we have been waiting for, to work with us and get things done to improve our community and nation together.

Each day it becomes clearer how stark the choice, and the contrast between what we have been living through-- wars based on lies, selling out the middle class for the rich, unbid contracts for the buddies of the Veep, and destruction of the constitutional protections we have depended on to make this nation great-- topped off with a nice little banking crisis to reinforce where the nation has been headed in this handbasket. Contrast that with the expectation for renewal that an Obama administration will bring. Imagine one big toilet flushing, that is the sound that is going to reverberate through Washington DC on November 4th, 2008. Followed by the quiet hum of renewable energy production beginning through our collective investments in a truly sustainable future-- based not on guns for oil, but on care for the planet and each other.

The future of our nation depends on growing past the politics of fear we were gifted with in 2001. We can go there together led by the example of our own Barack Obama!

Tired of the "Con" Game

The swift and aggressive manner used by Bush and Paulson announcing the bailout plan reminded me of the con games used by salesman. It smelled of this tactic so blatantly that the loud "hell no" echoed by John Q. Public arose from a pit of despair and long seething anger way beyond the previous "bitter" benchmark of this past spring. We are surrounded by cons in every nook and cranny of sensory invasion pummeled through the capitalistic maelstrom of daily living.

It's all geared toward reaching for our pocketbooks (or if that's empty) adding to an overwhelming debt burden. Nothing is sacred in the con's attempt to drain away on frivolous or necessary spending the hard earned pay from the sinking middle class. I am deeply distraught by the eroding ability of “the people” to take back our country from the corporate self interests whose right to make a profit without regard to anyone or anything beyond that singular purpose outweighs our own right to pursue happiness and live in peace in this beautiful country - on this magnificent planet.

I understand why the bailout of Wall Street is so vehemently opposed by John Q. Public. Its opposition, even if we are hurt or wounded by the consequential aftermath, provides some semblance of power over that which rules us and with its relentless greed and condoned usury, is bringing America to its economic knees.

By JOHN TEEL Special to the Courier & Press Tuesday, September 16, 2008 I shudder at the thought of Sarah Palin as vice president because I live in Alaska and know how violently misaligned Alaskan culture is with the rest of the United States. Not only is there an entire country physically separating Alaska from the United States, but there is a cultural divide just as wide. Palin governs a culture stuck in the 19th century.

Although she has an 80 percent approval rating as governor, keep in mind that most Alaskans are very different from most people in the United States. Nearly everyone in Alaska owns several guns, enjoys trophy hunting, and thinks we should drill for oil anywhere and everywhere. In Alaska many people still use outhouses, rarely bathe or comb their hair, and it's normal not to have electricity and running water. Does this sound like you and your family? If New York City had the population density of Alaska, there would be one person living on Manhattan Island. Alaska is like no other state, and in most regards it's a foreign country with a foreign culture. Alaska was colonized by greedy people who wanted to get rich fast through the consumption of natural resources (minerals, wildlife and oil).

Little has changed in a hundred years, and every industry in Alaska still exploits the land, sea or wildlife. Natural resource extraction is the backbone of Alaska, and it runs through every aspect of Alaskan life. Palin represents the modern face of these pioneer day interests.

Let me highlight some of Palin's atrocities occurring right now in Alaska: Palin offered a bounty of $150 for each right front leg of freshly killed wolves; Palin supports aerial hunting of wolves and bears, even though Alaskans voted twice to ban it; Palin used $400,000 of state money to fund a media campaign supporting aerial hunting; Palin is a champion for big oil and supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; Palin believes man-made global warming is a farce; and Palin opposes listing polar bears as an endangered species and is suing the federal government over it because she thinks it will limit her oil exploitation. The list of her atrocities to the natural world goes on and on.

It is not just a vehement disregard for the environment that makes Palin's policies so horrific. Palin believes that creationism should be taught in public schools; Palin opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest; and Palin is currently under investigation in Alaska for abuse of power. If Palin ever becomes president, we can kiss the natural world goodbye, along with the freedom we treasure so much in this country. Palin is bad for the planet and bad for America.

Discussion:

It dawned on me that many of us are getting caught
in the fear orgy the Republicans love to create
because most of their policies are based in fear.
They even fail to recognize that the opposite of
fear is not hope but trust and expectation. So
eliminating fear requires practicing trust and
expectation.

Fearing the Republicans is just more fear and
feeds their cause. They want us to be afraid,
even if all we're afraid of is them. I don't
expect us to never experience fearful thoughts,
but when we notice that we are would be a good
time to think "President Obama" and experience
the pleasure that this reality brings.

When I first thought of this I anticipated that
some, me included, would react with, "well just
thinking about it won't do it. Way too
'airy-fairy' What we need is to be in action."
Interesting thought, but aligning our thoughts
with what we want never hurts and imagining what
we want never precludes getting into action. In
fact, imagining "President Obama" is more likely
to inspire those actions that will create this
wonderful outcome.

Not to mention, if a whole bunch of us are
feeling good, instead of afraid, resigned and
helpless, then we will probably get a whole lot
more done. Practice this thought and notice that
it makes you feel good and certainly more
resourceful. The decision to send this email came
to me last night after deciding to practice this
thought myself yesterday. "President Obama"
Aaaaah. Happy and relieved. Like taking off a
shoe that's too tight (or in this case, maybe a
noose).

I did the math and if each of sends this to ten
others and only five send it on then in 13 rounds
this email will reach over 244 Million people.
Probably less because of repeats. If we send it
to more and let's say 10 send it on then in 9
rounds 1 Billion emails will be sent. Staggering
and no-one is asking you to send any money
anywhere or informing you that you have inherited
money from a long lost relative.

When I first heard Barak Obama speak in 2004 at
the convention, I thought 'This man could be
President someday." I like many others are
inspired by him and know that behind his inspiring
words is a strong, thoughtful and courageous
intelligence. Let's join together to make

A million dollars a day - for 2,000 years!

That was the way Ed Schultz contextualized the $700 billion bailout Paulson and Bernanke are trying to push down our throats - or throw onto our backs, depending on how you prefer to look at it. It is the equivalent of winning a $1 million daily for the past 2,000 years. Holy crap!

He also pointed out Section 8 of the bailout plan, which states uncategorically that there will be no accountability for what they want to do with $700 BILLION. So I came home and decided to read the whole thing. The first site I looked at, economicpopulist.org, I had never been to before. When I started reading, I thought maybe they were kidding. So I went to the NYT. Holy crap! I owe The Economic Populist an apology. I just couldn't believe what I was reading until I read it twice, and it said the same thing on both sites. We are about to get screwed like we never have in life. There are those uninformed people who actually believe that the literal wolf is at the door and Palin is protecting the population in AK from the threat of wolves. Another believe is that they are a threat to the cattle. This is not Yellowstone and these wolves are deep in the AK wilderness. They have never been a threat to humans nor livestock (Alaskans are not cattle ranchers - it is the caribou in question) So, here's a great question asked by a rational anti-animal violence advocate. If they need to eat caribou in AK, then why don't they "raise" caribou, like we do cattle. We don't go out to the back 40 to shoot a cow for supper. Not since the 1800s. Not to mention, the health of the consumer. What a thought! The truth is that game hunting brings in revenue - people would raise caribou if this was a mainstay of their sustenance. It's the best possible news! The Bush Administration has just announced it intends to withdraw its plan to strip gray wolves of their endangered species protection in the Northern Rockies.

What a huge win for wolves AND for hundreds of thousands of online activists like you who share the credit for this amazing victory!

Let me bring you up to speed. Last March, the Bush Administration declared the Northern Rockies' wolf population "fully recovered," then it handed off responsibility for the wolves to Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Just as we predicted, a bloodbath ensued, with 110 wolves slaughtered by state agents and hunters in as many days.

NRDC, Earthjustice and 11 other conservation groups raced to court and won an injunction that put a temporary halt to the killing until the full case could be heard. We fully expected to fight a drawn-out courtroom battle in order to win a permanent victory.

But thanks to the Bush Administration's surrender, that battle will NOT happen. Instead, the wolves of Yellowstone and the surrounding region will remain protected by federal law.

That means Wyoming, Montana and Idaho will NOT be allowed to begin the extermination of hundreds of wolves this fall as part of a massive public hunt -- the first in more than three decades. Instead, those wolves will continue to roam the Rockies -- wild and free -- as nature and the law intended!

Why did U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials throw in the towel? They had to face up to the fact that their case against wolf protection would never hold up in court. Above all, they ignored the best available science showing that wolf populations had not fully recovered.

In the end, the Administration had little choice but to put its tail between its legs and beat a hasty retreat.

Make no mistake: the fight doesn't end here. You can be sure the federal government will be back soon enough with a new plan. And the states will learn their lessons and return with yet another scheme for killing wolves.

But you can be equally sure that, with your help, NRDC will stand vigilant, fully prepared to meet and turn back any new and deadly threat.

Global warming from the carbon in coal, all the other air pollution from coal burning, and the destruction of Montana, Wyoming and Appalachia are all a part of a steamroller bearing down on us, one that if we act and act now, we can dodge to a fair degree. Nuclear Power is a dinosaur. But not just any dinosaur. It is unsafe, and it is too expensive. And during the nuclear cycle, plutonium for nuclear weapons is produced.

Regardless of the steady propaganda recently pumped into the major media outlets by the nuclear power industry, nuclear power’s time is past. Come on over to our side. We currently are staring at 2 steamrollers, and nuclear power apologists would have their steamroller BIGGER??

Barack Obama is a man of integrity. Our belief is that when all the facts about nuclear power are presented to him clearly, that he will reject it as an option. The large utilities eager to build nuclear power plants are now suddenly pressing Congress about global warming. Very convenient. But is nuclear power a solution for the problem of global warming? Hmmm, No. 1)Nuclear power plants are too expensive to build. The nuclear power industry refuses to accept responsibility for the unique risks of nuclear power and demands massive federal subsidies so that they can rake in profits on their suspect investments. To quote the Rocky Mountain Institute (rmi.org) position on nuclear power: “Contrary to an argument nuclear apologists have recently taken to making, nuclear power isn't a good way to curb climate change. True, nukes don't produce carbon dioxide—but the power they produce is so expensive that the same money invested in efficiency or even natural-gas-fired power plants would offset much more climate change.” Quoting the Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC): "Our national electricity needs could be met, while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent or more, through a combination of increased energy efficiency, wind power, solar power, advanced coal-fired plants with carbon capture and storage, and high-efficiency natural gas turbines." 2)Nuclear power is extremely unsafe. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has acknowledged in a reference document “that early containment failure cannot be ruled out with high confidence for any of the plants.” Even with the most technologically advanced checks and safeties, eventually some critical part of everything man makes fails. If an explosion occurs at a gas-fired or coal-fired plant, this is not good. But if a nuclear reactor melts down and breaks through its containment vessel, we have at least a regional catastrophe. Large areas of necessary habitable land are rendered uninhabitable, and people die of radiation-caused cancer. 3)To again quote the Rocky Mountain Institute's position on nuclear power: "Nuclear power poses significant problems of radioactive waste disposal." 4)Quoting the NRDC: "Plutonium is a normal by-product of electricity production in conventional reactors. Thus, the same reactors and fuel-processing facilities that are used for energy production can also be used for the manufacture of weapons." "Perhaps the most serious of all the problems that would be exacerbated by dramatically increasing global nuclear capacity is the threat of nuclear proliferation."

Dan Becker, director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming Program said, "Switching from coal to nukes is like giving up smoking and taking up crack."

I had the opportunity to see the entire Republican presentation on TV and summarizes this way:

1-Mc Clain acknowledged the corruption of Bush administration but he did nothing to denounce before his nomination. In other words acknowledged complicity with his silence

2-Mc Clain and Palin talked more about Obama and less their proposal . Their proposals were represented more in criticizing others. That alone showed a similar policy where the Bush speech to attack opaque real action for change and progress of a country People want to change actions, not words without actions LOL

3 - All presentations Republican, mentioned the change but the underlying with the past can not provide change for the future if you live with the memories of the past (September 11, wars in the Middle East) The presentation of their life showed little compassion toward animals (Palin hunter and the wife of Mc Clain rodeo queen)

4 - They used the experience of Obama as little power of persuasion but ... Palin has experience ??? Yes, for to kill innocent animals

5 - They offered the same proposal environmentalist who said Obama so it has become clear that it has no creativity to innovate new ideas

6-The few social problems that were expressed more focused on solving the consequences that causes.

7 - The image shown with weapons, involvement in wars and a speech by explaining that America has threatened and endangered only reflects a manipulation of state terrorism as a strategy to get the votes This reflected subliminally to continue Bush's policies with the continuity of wars and thus greater economic investment of state for weapons. Much of these resources are derived from taxes on taxpayers while their quality of life commits

8 - At no time spoke of the economy and that now should have been the biggest proposal when U.S. have recognized that this crisis (rising unemployment, nationalization of large private companies., Loss of rental houses for inflation… ..) How can improve the quality of life of Americans without regard this as a fundamental pillar in the proposed electoral ?????

9 - Finally, what is more questionable when indicate that they will combating terrorism while maintaining repression against their own people (Law AETA against activists proanimal and the arrest of 200 people and journalists during the Republican convention…… ..LOL )

It was a rainy, dreary day here in central MInnesota, but a group of us got out there and did some door knockin' anyway. We met alot of very nice people and identified quite a few undecided voters. I am confident that our efforts today helped to sway some votes Obama's way.

We will be out there every day possible from now until November doing our part to make this thing happen. Please, won't you join us in some door knockin?? For every 4 doors knocked, another vote is swayed. It truly does make a difference. For those of you that are intimidated about the idea, please just give it a chance. You will find out that once you are out there talking to people, it is fun and people are actually very happy to have you at their door.

Please note, neither the GOP or the Dems or any international government has any kind of animal rights record to speak of, and a very poor "animal welfare" record. However, we tend to focus on conservative parties because they always protect the profits of corporations over the rights of non-humans every time. Please also note that many US polititions tend to support hunting and are afraid to speak out against the NRA.

To sum up contents, Sarah Palin's actions personally and as governor are of great concern at best. The following starts with the personal then moves on to Governor Palin's public record.

1. Sarah Palin is a lifetime NRA member and hunter as is her husband. They
own a commercial fishing business. She hunts moose, wears fur, ice fishes, and (from photos) appears to own a bearskin rug.

2. Sarah Palin's husband's favorite sport to participate in is dogsled racing.

3. As governor, Sarah Palin supports the brutal aerial hunting of wolves and
bears and authorized $400,000 in state funds to oppose a ballot initiative ending aerial hunting. State voters have twice before voted to ban such hunting.

4. As governor, in order to increase wolf hunting, Sarah Palin offered hunters a bounty of $150 each for every left front foreleg of a wolf they could provide the state.

5. In a region west of Anchorage, she authorized the killing of up to 70% of all bears (1400 bears) including mothers and cubs.

6. Alaskan Governor Palin sued the federal government (the Bush-Cheney administration) to keep polar bears from being listed as an endangered species.

7. Sarah Palin supports and promotes the brutal Iditarod dogsled races.

8. She opposed the closing of an unprofitable state-run dairy and
authorized $600,000 in state funds to keep it open.

9. Sarah Palin supports drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge
(ANWR), an extremely sensitive region where millions of animals could
be harmed or killed. Senator John McCain has long opposed this drilling as do most energy experts who see it as useless.

10. Sarah Palin (Vice presidential choice by Senator John McCain) has publicly stated that global warming is a "farce" and is not caused by humans even though her state and the animals in it suffer some of the most dramatic consequences.

In essence, regarding animals and the environment, she may be the worst vice-presidential candidate in history.
More importantly, this raises great concerns about ability of Senator John McCain to make sound considered choices and decisions. eg choosing a Vice President who is a climate change sceptic at this dangerous stage in the Earth's history.

Those Australians uncorrupted by the ubiquitous US media, are gobsmacked by the utter tastelessness that passes as attractive in US presidential candidates. Sarah Palin, the latest republican candidate for USA Vice President, epitomises this trend.

Championing selected human rights, apparently prepared to sacrifice her own daughter to a public shot-gun marriage, she seems like a high-tech cartoon of a religious reactionary. It is chilling to realise that the violent religious right are among the few which the press and corporations want to motivate to vote in the US client state. The rest of the American voters are largely kept very bored with the notion of exerting some say in their own fates.

Not just tasteless; malice and stupidity caught on film:

I was bemused, impotent - until I saw this film. Then I realised how bad Sarah Palin must be, how bad the US situation must be - politically and for wild as well as domesticated species - tortured and harassed the way they were in Roman circuses and for the same political ends.

This three minute video about Sarah Palin's appallingly cruel record on wildlife also tells us about the beautiful Alaskan wilderness.

A rare chance to speak up for wildlife and be heard world-wide

The world is watching Sarah Palin.
Please don't give into apathy here, because the high profile of this ignorant woman, gives those of us with an ounce of decency, an opportunity at world-wide level, to show the US Republicans that shooting animals whose habitat is already beseiged by US overpopulation and economic greed - for sport - goes way beyond the bounds of decency.

The situation and the values appear to be quite depraved. The bible bashing that accompanies this grand-scale human bullying is nauseating and frightening. How widespread is this emotionally blunted contempt for nature and blindness to beauty or compassion in the mainstream religions?

Time now for religious leaders to rise up and condemn and ostracise this woman and the entire party which endorses her, or forever be condemned by their already long record of silence on such things.

On top of her apparent absence of normal compassion, this woman who according to my values is insane, actually models the brutal execution of wildlife using technologically intensive weaponry from petroleum-guzzling small airplanes. This is frightening ignorance of here and now petroleum costs and scarcity in a world where the US has actually gone to war for more petroleum. This is oil-profligacy in a political context where even her own party is advocating reducing foreign oil dependency. For every drop of oil, how many drops of human and other blood and sap in our turbo-vandalised natural world?

Is Right to Life a political mechanism to draw energy from reasonable people?

It makes you wonder if Right to Life is just an impossibly confusing, diabolically effective smokescreen to cover up total immorality, utter selfishness, blind, driving ambition, compulsive wastefulness and money-worship in the US political Right. Are the religious right of the Republicans its moral orcs?

Big money that endorses Republican cruelty should withdraw it or face consumer consequences

And, for those of us who spend nearly all our lives fighting against the needless, heart-breaking suffering which proceeds at an industrial rate, how appalling is the information that big money backs this suffering and keeps it accelerating and amplifying. If that money were to be taken from Sarah Palin and the Republican Party which has endorsed such unspeakable acts, how much kinder, overnight, the world would become.

I hope that someone will write an article about those organisations which have funded Palin and the Republicans so that we on candobetter can name their CEOs and associate them with these deeds.

Roger Schlickeisen, of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, writes that acceptance by Sarah Palin of the Republican nomination for Vice President puts her second in line to be President of the United States. He says that he needs help "... to let America know where she stands on the brutal and needless aerial hunting of wolves and bears. He asks that people "Watch our new video on Palin’s awful record and share it with everyone you know who cares about wildlife." He warns that the "video is extremely disturbing. It contains graphic images of aerial hunting of wolves," and he adds that this is "a brutal and needless practice that Governor Palin has fought hard to promote and expand."

Schlickeisen states that, "Despite strong scientific, ethical and public opposition to aerial hunting, Governor Palin has:

* Proposed paying a $150 bounty for the left foreleg of each dead wolf.
* Approved a $400,000 state-funded propaganda campaign to promote aerial hunting.
* Introduced legislation to make it even easier to use aircraft to hunt wolves and bears."

John McCain has just announced his choice for the Republican VP slot: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who is no friend to animals. In 2007, Palin announced a $150 bounty for wolves. Why? Because wolves prey on moose and caribou, two favorite targets for hunters in Alaska. So Palin instituted a program to encourage hunters to kill wolves so that there would be more moose and caribou for hunters to kill. A lawsuit by Defenders of Wildlife resulted in the Alaska Superior Court ruling that the state Department of Fish and Game did not have the authority to institute a bounty program. A state program to shoot wolves and bears from the air continues, and on August 26, 2008, Ballot Measure 2, which would have stopped the aerial gunning of predators, was defeated by state voters.

Palin is also a hunter and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

In addition, Palin has sued the Bush administration to delist polar bears under the Endangered Species Act because the protection of polar bears interferes with drilling for oil and gas. Palin even penned an op-ed for the New York Times, explaining her scientific arguments against protecting polar bears. Isn't it funny how her op-ed doesn't mention drilling for oil?

Needless to say, from an animal rights standpoint, Sarah Palin would be a disastrous VP.

If John McCain gets to frame this election as one guy who will cut your taxes and one guy who will raise your taxes, we could lose. Obama needs to change the tone on this discussion. I want him to talk about Republican made Inflation. This is the only thing the USA makes anymore. 8 Trillion of the 10 Trillion Dollar debt came under Presidents Reagan Bush and Bush. This debt isn't some far fetched figure. We see this DEBT every day. This debt causes INFLATION. By borrowing money and/or turning on the printing presses at the treasury to pay for spending they can't afford and interest on the debt, Bush has killed the value of the dollar. When Bush took office you could get a Euro for 95 cents. Now it's more than $1.50. This number affects us every day, at the gas pump at the grociery store and at the doctor's office. The fact that the Bush treasury stopped releasing the figures for M3 (How much money has been printed) is PROOF that this is the SILVER BULLET. The Money Supply has doubled, and the value of the dollar has been halved. INFLATION IS A SECRET TAX, AND IT WORKS LIKE CREDIT CARD DEBT. Cutting taxes is a secret scam. It sounds good but look what it's done. The debt is skyrocketing, the dollar is plummeting, small business are disappearing. Cutting taxes sounds good if that's the only sentence you hear. This leaves only two choices:

#1 John McCain/George Bush Economics. Print and Spend (On a Friend). Bail out banks every other week. They want to have it both ways, they want to fight unilateral wars, they just don't want to pay for them. Each American owes about $25,000 thanks to Republican Presidential Economics.

#2 Barack Obama/Bill Clinton Economics. Progressive Tax plan. Pay for what we spend, and restructure the government so we aren't wasting money any more. Obama wants to raise taxes back to Clinton levels for the top 5% of the nation.

So John, you like cutting taxes, How has that worked in the last 8 years?? At what point have taxes been cut enough?

Things we think but never say

This is my list of topics that are not getting enough attention.

#1 - Walmart votes. Wal-Mart basically told their employees that if Obama is president they will have to cut jobs.

Why ? Because Barack Obama cares about the middle class and small businesses. Small business are bad business for Wal-Mart (but especially vice-versa). Wal-Mart and others like them, have destroyed small business in America.

#2 - Halliburton, Blackwater, KBR. Who thinks corporations should be able to profit off the suffering and death of war? Their employees were told to destroy weaponry and transport so that they could order more. With cost-plus systems, the more your order the more you profit. We need an investigation and a way to recoup lost money. One report has it that there was a transfer of cash in Iraq of 360Million dollars and no more information about it recorded except a signature.

#3 - Inflation: the price of everything has gone up! (OR HAS IT?) Really, the value of the dollar has gone down. By doubling the money supply the value has gone down by about 1/2. The Federal Reserve, the Treasury and George bush are all responsible for destroying the value of the dollar. So much so, that they decided to stop printing the value of the M3. That tells us how much money there is printed. When Bush took over the number was around 5T, at last report in early 2006 it was up to 10T.

#4 - NeoConservatism- People don't know what a neoCon is. From wikipedia, They are a radical group that believes

"Aggressive support for democracies and nation building is additionally justified by a belief that, over the long term, it will reduce the extremism that is a breeding ground for Islamic terrorism. Neoconservatives, along with many other political theorists, have argued that democratic regimes are less likely to instigate a war than a country with an authoritarian form of government. Further, they argue that the lack of freedoms, lack of economic opportunities, and the lack of secular general education in authoritarian regimes promotes radicalism and extremism. #5 - The plan to invade Iraq and change the regime was written up in 1988 by Scooter Libby and Paul Wolfowitz. From John W. Dean's Conservatives without Conscience; "Libby was relatively unknown, a "behind the throne" man with unique influence within the Bush/Cheney White House. Libby worked with Cheney when he was Secretary of defense under Bush I, and what at the defense department he assisted his former Yale professor Paul Wolfowitz in drafting a defense policy guidance paper calling for unilaterally preemptive wars and the invasion of Iraq--a decade before the 9/11 terror attacks. (When this highly controversial document was leaked to the press, Bush I had the policy withdrawn, assuring the world that this was not the way Americans were thinking.) Later Libby would help draft a report for the neoconservative Project for the New American Century entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses--Strategy, Forces, and Resources for a New Century." which was merely a restatement of the early policy paper, but under Bush II it became the blueprint for the administration's defense policy. Libby has been extremely aggressive in promoting the aims of neoconservatism. Reportedly:

it was Libby--along with Paul Wolfowitz, Doug Feith, and a handful of other top aides at the Pentagon and White Housee-- who convinced the president that the U.S. should go to war in Iraq. It was Libby who pushed Cheney to publicly argue that Saddam Hussein had ties to al Qaeda and 9/11. It was also Libby who prodded former Secretary of State Colin Powell to include specious reports about an alleged meeting between 9/11 terrorist Mohammed Atta and an Iraqi intelligence official in Powell's February 2003 speech to the United Nations."

#6 Taxes! Barack Obama is noble enough to tell the American people that he will spend money by taxing them. The alternative (Which is never spoken) is that you spend money and pay for it by borrowing and by turning on the printing press. Is that what the American people really want? Forget about new spending, there's 10T in debt to pay for. That's as many dollars as were printed in feb 2006. We don't have the money to pay the debt on that, and pay for anything else. It's time for the American people to understand that politicians can't cut your taxes and pay the debt. They can't cut your taxes and pay social security entitlements into the future. Regardless of what we have planned, there's a HUGE BILL that needs to be paid for, or we will be paying for it in premium every month. When you talk about taxes you have to be honest, the last 8 years we've spent by borrowing, because we knew If you asked Americans to pay for the war in Iraq, IT WOULD NOT BE AS POPULAR. John McCain wants to sell American assets to foreigners to pay for foreign wars we don't need. And the value of the dollar goes with it. This is the adult conversation we need to have, not the elementary school debate of MORE TAXES VS LESS.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Iraqi government has asked for information about buying 36 F-16 fighter aircraft built by Lockheed Martin Corp (NYSE:LMT - News), the U.S. Defense Department said on Friday.

F-16C/D Block 50/52 models are now being produced for Poland, Israel, Greece and Pakistan. The United Arab Emirates was the maiden customer for the Block 60 version, the most sophisticated F-16 produced to date.

More than 4,400 F-16s have been delivered worldwide, according to Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin. Morocco this year became the 25th and latest overseas buyer with a deal for 24 new Block 50/52 models and related gear said by the Pentagon to be worth as much as $2.4 billion.

Among other systems, Iraq is seeking more than 400 armored vehicles plus six C-130 transport planes built by Lockheed, the Pentagon's No. 1 supplier.

On July 30, the Pentagon notified Congress that Iraq also was seeking to buy 24 Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT - News) Bell Armed 407 or 24 Boeing AH-6 helicopters along with 565 120mm mortars, 665 81mm mortars, 200 AGM-114M Hellfire missiles and other arms that could be worth $2.4 billion.

The truth comes out. It wasn't just a war for oil. It's a war for the Military Industrial Complex. WHAT A SURPRISE. The Place isn't safe enough to pull our troops out. But it's safe enough to give them the weaponry to start a new war.

My husband and I are in transition at this time. We are moving from Moultrie,Ga to Savannah, Ga. He is currently in Maryland in training for a new job and I and in middle Ga searching for a home and job in Savannah. I called to the Voter registrar's office in Colquitt County and a Ms. Paula McCollough, Chief registrar, told me that to her understanding that if you did not love in a county you could not vote there (and laughed about over the phone)!!!!! I was told by the registration office in another county that it should be no problem with us getting an absentee ballot from the county that we are registered in but this woman tells me something totally different from what the Secretary office has told me. What steps do I need to take?

#1 He's a jerk: He spent the last 6 months talking about how Barack Obama isn't experienced enough to be president. McCain then picks someone to be president, in case of, WHO IS BY ALL ACCOUNTS MUCH LESS EXPERIENCED, than Barack Obama. So, he's a jerk. It's another case of the anti-Golden rule neoRepublicans. Do as I say not as I do. I'm not mad that he picked someone unqualified because she's unqualified. I love that, it helps Obama win. I'm mad because he wasted all of our time listening to these experience arguments... hundreds of hours spent reading articles or watching political TV on the subject. Well, I hope he liked that argument, because he will be hearing it for the next 65 days.

John Kerry spoke today about Candidate McCain. If anyone was listening he may have delivered the crucial tool to defeat J. McCain. Talk about Candidate McCain. Yes, good, compare him to Senator McCain. Talk about Candidate Republicans. Candidate Bush promised us no nation building, working across the aisles, restoring respect for the WH. He delivered the opposite. Candidate Reagan promised to reduce the size of government. It grew. Candidate Bush I promised an end to voodoo economics. By 1992 we were solidly in a recession. Candidate McCain promises energy independence. Yet, when he had a chance to do something about it, the last 26 years, he did nothing. To use another sports analogy, The Republican Candidate is a free agent season poltician. They will say anything they can, and do anything they can to score political points with promises they never intend to keep. In baseball this is a common concept. General managers know that what a player puts up statistically in his free agent season, is not going to be represntative of what they will produce once under contract. The Equal Justice Alliance is a coalition of animal protection and other social justice organizations formed in November of 2006 to defend freedom of speech and assembly by defeating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA)

AETA denies equal protection to social justice activists and restricts our freedom of speech and assembly. It unfairly brands as terrorism any activities that cross a state line and interfere with the operation of an animal enterprise or of any entity that deals with one. Such activities may include website posts, peaceful vigils, nonviolent civil disobedience, undercover investigations, and whistle-blowing.

AETA is excessively broad and vague by covering nearly all enterprises and by implicating individuals who merely attempt or discuss "interference" with their operation. It imposes excessively harsh penalties when compared with other similar federal offenses. It has a chilling effect on social justice advocacy. It deters investigation of federal law violations committed by animal enterprises. It detracts from prosecution of real terrorism against the American people.

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (S. 3880) was introduced at the behest of the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries in early 2006. Our national opposition campaign gained the support of thousands of constituents and more than 200 organizations, including the ASPCA, Humane Society of the US, Natural Resources Defense Council, National Lawyers Guild, and NY City Bar Association.

Nevertheless, some U.S. House and Senate Judiciary leaders labeled the bill non-controversial, enabling them to push it through on a voice vote with only a handful of Members aware of it and even fewer voting. President Bush was happy to sign it on behalf of his industry supporters.

I am heartened he chose someone who will complement his current approach and experience and question those that continue to bring up musings about why Hillary Clinton wasn't chosen. The Polls as I see them

Less than 50% of Arizonans are voting for John McCain for President. Less than 50% of Minnesotans voted for Tim Pawlenty to be GOV in 2006. Does this shock anyone else? 49% of Arizonans support John McCain for President. In the last 88 years, A President has only got less than 52% in his home state and won the election one time 1968. (And we all know 1968 wasn't a regular election year) Only 3 times has it happened in the 20th-21st Centuries. No candidate has ever got less than 50% in his home state and won, when home state is same color(Nixon got less than 50 in NY in 68, Wilson got less than 50% NJ and won '12 and '16) Also, there were 3 major parties in '12 and '16.

Final note on my inside the numbers. McCain is at 47.2% in AZ polls since Obama became the presumptive nominee on 6/3. Nationally since 6/3 Obama is at 46.48 and McCain 42.21. That's a 4.2 point lead for Obama. So, don't believe this suffocating narrative that Obama is slipping in the polls.

The Republican campaigner is like a free agent ballplayer. He's looking for a contract, so he's on his best behavior. George Bush sounded pretty good in 2000 and 2004. He didn't deliver a thing. How come when Obama is up by 8 points nationally.... we can't trust August polls? When he's 'dead even' all of a sudden its a media wave of "What's wrong with Obama" stories. If he gets that 8 point lead back, there better be stories about, "what's wrong with McCain???" The media really makes me sick. They trust McCain and put Obama under a magnifying glass. It's the Republican who needs to be questioned. His campaign rhetoric sounds acceptable, but he CAN NOT BE TRUSTED. A Republican campaign is like a free agency year for a player. They do their best to secure a contract, then do whatever they want once unaccountable. McCain spouts off, "I'll balance the budget" "my opponent would rather lose a war to win an election" and other blatant lies. What Bush learned behind closed doors

If some well-informed experts are right, Saudi Arabia's oil reserves are a fraction of what they've been telling us.

Why does it matter? Because everyone has believed for decades that Saudi Arabia's oil supply is virtually unlimited. That's what the Saudis have said over and over again for more than 30 years.

If an oil shortage threatens to cause a recession or a market crash, we can count on the Saudis to come through. So people think.

But in a private briefing, one of America's top oil experts told President George Bush exactly what I'm telling you. In fact, this same man was a consultant to the secretive task force that drew up Vice President Dick Cheney's energy plan in 2001.

In other words, the guy is a heavy hitter who knows the energy business.

The real concern about Saddleback

Come on people, look at the obvious. The reason McCain was able to answer so quickly and decisively was not because he was tipped off about the questions! What he did was to memorize stock answers, mainly from his stump speeches. When he heard word A he responded with answer A-1.

What concerns me is how shallow he is. Is he capable of independent thought. Could he answer a question without just parroting canned responses. Could he actually speak on any matter for three minutes without looking like a fool. I have often thought that one of the rules of the debates is that no answer is allowed to be shorter than 3 minutes. Does the responder actually know anything beyond pre-programmed canned responses? Can he speak coherently about any subject for three minutes?

It would be interesting to see how many of McCain's responses were actually new and what percentage of the answers came directly from previous stump speeches. A real tip off is the repeated use of "My friends," this is not the type of response that comes out in a response to a question, it was falling back to his previous campaign speeches. I am concerned about the possibility that we might have a president who is incapable of thought, and merely parrots propaganda. We've already had eight years of that.

I am also concerned about those who compliment him on being unwilling to compromise his beliefs. We have sure had eight years of a pigheaded fool who was going to do what he thought was right, regardless of the consequences and regardless of how outrageous it was..

We'll have a Chinese/Japanese/Indian/Saudi gov't. Because that's who will own our assets and our gov't. For 8 years Bush has turned on the printing presses, or borrowed from foreign nations, because he wanted to spend but was scared to tax. Ironically, McCain is saying, I'll keep using that USA credit card, it will never get turned down. Truth is, it's been getting turned down for years. More foreign countries are acquiring US assets. Large metropolitan buildings in New York have been bought by foreign companies, countries and individuals. Finally. WE ARE PAYING THE TAX. We pay the tax every day when we go to the gas pump or the supermarket and find out, the dollar is not worth what it was yesterday, last week, last month, last year, in the 90s. Rising gas prices, Rising food prices, ITS ALL THE SHRINKING DOLLAR. No one wants to point this out, because there is a clear answer to WHO'S DESTROYING THE DOLLAR, the question: Who's raising my prices - leads you to a million different villians. Economics needs to be our children's second language. You can use a PDA to translate your words into a variety of languages. You can't use your PDA to translate economics.

Swiftboating this year is coming in the form of attack polls. Every bumbling political journalist in the country is using this line about the polls: "Why isn't Obama winning by more....?" This is the scam of the year. Because, they never go in to discuss the forces behind a McCain run for presidency. They only want to use this line to impugn Obama. What could it be about Obama that doesn't have him dominating the polls???? What is it about Obama that hasn't caught on??? Is he slipping in the polls? Is McCain gaining???

NO!!!!!!!!! McCain has a much stronger coalition than just the 28% that still support Bush. He's got the elderly, he's got the neoCons, he's got the religious right, he's got the ANTI-OBAMA vote, and he's got some military votes. The anti-Obama vote is a strong contingent, and this coalition is turning out to be about 42-44% of the country. It will be close this fall unless the 'liberal' media wakes up from this nightmare. Is the campaign being a little too cute?

Why is the campaign doing a 50 state strategy, there are only 11 states in play. Obama has a hammerlock on all of the Kerry/Edwards states (Xcept New Hampshire 4EV and maybe Michigan (17). Iowa (7), went Bush, and is in the bag for Obama. So if Obama holds NH+MI he needs just 11 electoral votes. That's either, Ohio (20), Florida (27), Indiana (11), Virginia (13), Missouri (11) or a combo of Colorado (9), New Mexico (5), and Nevada (5). You might even say there's only 7 states in play with Missouri, Virginia and Nevada as long shots. Barack needs to be in those states for every single one of the next 84 days.

This could also go with the high road Obama has been taking toward attack ads. (Which he has moved away from, thank god) The problem wasn't attack ads, the problem was making stuff up in attack ads. I heard someone say in politics if you're explaining you're losing. Obama needs to stay on the offensive, with relevant concerns about McCain. It will contrast greatly with the fluff and lies that McCain puts out.

Other than that, I'm excited Obama is up on 10 of the last 11 polls in Colorado. We're even in Virginia which went for Bush by 8.2. Winning like 41 of 42 national heads up polls versus McCain. In the Kerry/Edwards states our lead is increased. In all the Bush states, McCain if he has a lead, its less. GREAT NEWS: McCain is only at 49% of his home state. HALF OF ARIZONANS DO NOT SUPPORT AN ARIZ SENATOR FOR PRES.

Final thought: It's 3am, and there's a crisis somewhere in the world, a phone rings in the White House, but John McCain is on vacation, he doesn't work weekends, try his home in Sedona, try his other home, his other home, his other home, his other home, try his other home, the yaucht maybe or the condo... it's 6am and John McCain's handler is about to hand him the phone... as he reminds you quickly... Print and Spend!!

When did the 'conservative' party become the wild money throwers? Print and Spend could be the calling cry of this new conservative movement. Print and Spend hits the consumers as hard as Tax and Spend, yet it falls short of providing the benefits. Hard to spend when you have to print to pay the vig. It also diverts the focus of the spending and those that pay the toll. By printing to pay for programs it takes away the link between public opinion and the programs. If the Pres can just go to the treasury and turn on the presses, there's no checks and balances. Certainly not the treasury secretary that is appointed by Bush. The sad fact is that we see prices go up at the gas pump, at the supermarket, everywhere; and we blame the gas companies, the supermarket, the immigrants, the __________. Never do we connect the price to the value of the dollar, and who controls our dollar? And, economists will tell you that sales taxes are disproportionately applied to the lower class. They see the inflation at their gas pump and at their grociery store. Imagine if a private citizen wanted the right to print money at will. If he did we'd lock him up and throw away the key. Yet, when our Treasury does it, there's no concern. John "Print and Spend" McCain plans to fix our problems by cutting earmarks, less than 1% of the fed. budget. And Obama is risky? What's further terrifying, is that McCain isn't even promising us that much. When Bush came to office he promised the World, and fell short on every account. McCain is promising us more of the same, likely he'll fall short on every account of that promise. Bush promised Good and did Evil. McCain promises more of the same (Evil) and will probably spice it up a notch. No?

The underreported economic news of the week is that Barack Obama favors a stronger dollar. Even better, he thinks a stronger greenback would help to reduce oil prices.

That at least is what the Democratic Presidential candidate told a town hall forum in Parma, Ohio, on Tuesday. "If we had a strengthening of the dollar, that would help" reduce fuel costs, he said, according to a Reuters dispatch ignored by most of the media.

This ought to be a bigger story. In linking the dollar to oil prices, Mr. Obama is pointedly at odds with the Bush Administration and Federal Reserve, both of which blame high commodity prices on supply and demand, despite falling demand due to slower global growth. Fed officials -- in particular, Vice Chairman Donald Kohn -- have expressly rejected any strong link between the dollar's collapse and the oil price surge since last August.

This conveniently absolves the Fed and Bush Treasury of responsibility for the consequences of what has been their destructive and all but explicit dollar devaluation strategy. If the Illinois Senator rejects greenback debasement, that's the best news to date about Obamanomics.

Reuters also quoted Mr. Obama as saying "The way to strengthen the dollar is for us to get our economy back in shape." On that point, he has it backward: Strengthening the dollar would help the economy -- by making the U.S. a destination for capital, and especially by reducing the inflation in food and energy prices that has pounded the American middle class. Those price hikes may yet tilt the economy into a recession it could otherwise avoid.

We don't know who is whispering in Mr. Obama's ear about the dollar, but he's on to a rich political vein. Americans know instinctively that something is wrong when the Canadian loonie is worth more than the greenback. Over to you, John McCain."

There is a concerted effort on the part of the main stream media to make this horse race look closer than it is. Let's start with this Real Clear Politics average. What a joke! It uses polls from 2007. It also cherry picks the polls. USA/Gallup came out with 3 different polls. They only used the one with McCain +4. If you take into account only the polls since Obama defeated Clinton and you have a clear Obama +5. 5 points is like 30M votes. 5 points is an electoral landslide. Beyond that, whenever polls come out that show Obama destroying Mccain, those polls are called outliers, and discredited. Finally. This is just a BS line of thinking. It's obvious to anyone that knows recent politics, there are heavy instituions against Obama. You've got your religious right and your neo-conseravative wolfpack. Then you've got the people that would never vote for a Black president, or one with a Muslim name. Then top that off with the low information voters who think McCain and think hero, and think Obama and nothing rings a bell. Add in your geographical conservatives (people who were born and raised into it) Finish that off with your low economics information voter who hears McCain say Obama will raise your taxes. These powers combined it is obvious that Obama will not win 55% of the vote. Chances are not even 50%. Ok, so we know why, now lets ask the real question. With McCain in the spotlight for the last 500 months, why would he be able to recruit more votes with only 3 months left?
