We rarely get a chance to see another country's editorial about the USA

Read this excerpt from a Romanian Newspaper. The article was written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and published under the title 'C'ntarea Americii, meaning 'Ode To America ') in the Romanian newspaper Evenimentulzilei 'The Daily Event' or 'News of the Day'.

~An Ode to America ~


Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs.

On 9/ll, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts..   Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about.

Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand.

After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing. On every occasion, they started singing: 'God Bless America !'

I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people.

How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put into collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy. What on earth can unites the Americans in such way? Their land? Their history? Their economic Power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace, I thought things over, I reached but only one conclusion... Only freedom can work such miracles.

Every issue that America faces, whether it's health care reform, war, the economy, crime, etc., also faces the students in Her schools. I am a public school teacher in Minneapolis, MN (7th grade math). The economy is having huge impact on the students in my school. Last year, out of 115 or so students on my 7th grade team, 71 were new students at the end of the year. I hope that gives you an idea of the turn-around rate of students in my room.

I believe that poverty is the biggest social issue of our time. It is the biggest injustice there is. I believe that education is a key to ending poverty.

I hope that my future blog entries will inspire readers to act to promote social justice.

This,dear Americansis a residue of anti-Catholism that has lasted 500 years and is still not dune. As late as World War 2 Catholics were formally barred from high offices because Catholics took marcfhing orders from the Vatican that the loyatly to Crown and State.

Mr Blairs Dual useism sort of corvers all the bases of religious experience. Unkind folk will say this is only an extension of Mr Blair's politics: he endevoured to be all things to all people.

Still as a assertive woman I can say Mr Blair was not Bill Clinton nosying about Monica Lewinsky of the world. Mr Blair-puppy doy that he was with his eargerness to please-was emminently sensible man who kept his feet fuly planted in the public spere. And that is why this inquiry is undertaken.

Mr Obama thought has sought to sweep Mr Push under the rug. He has vigourously resisted a "tructh comission" and hearings on torture. He remebers with good reason, the Coldby-Richard Bisell era of the 70's and the dark revelations of the FBI after Watergate, and does not want to repeat the withering of crediblity.

Mr Obama took an oath of office "to take care that the laws are faitfully executed." And actually ended up taking the oath twibecuse be botched the first one. He has commented that this is a goverment of laws not men. This means that all stand equal under the law.

Mr Obama acted with out fear or favor in prosecuting the Governor's of New York and Illinois for therir indiscretions. Yet he offers a double standard of justice,a free pass to Repuclicans dfor matters of misconduct happening of their watch--exergarious behaviour of the worst sort.

Be The Change - Minneapolis For Obama

Inspired by the grassroots movement created by Barack Obama's historic presidential run, and his call for the change Americans need, a group of enthusiastic grassroots supporters met up at the Lake Harriet Rose Gardens last Thursday to record a music video set to the Larry Long's "Be The Change."

Larry Long, who wrote and performed "Be The Change," was inspired to create the piece by U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone:

Paul and Sheila Wellstone were my friends for over thirty years. During their last Senatorial campaign, I flew with Paul & Sheila to a debate in southwestern Minnesota. On the flight home, I asked Paul how he was able to handle what I perceived to be personal attacks. Paul simply quoted Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Obama Campaign Announces Obama-Biden Plan for the Great Lakes

Today, the Obama-Biden campaign announced the Obama-Biden Great Lakes Restoration Plan. The plan calls for new federal funding of $5 billion to jumpstart Great Lakes Restoration, designates a Great Lakes Coordinator to coordinate Federal, State, and Local agencies and requires full implementation of the Great Lakes Compact.

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar said, "There are numerous challenges facing the Great Lakes, and they must be met with sustainable and comprehensive management practices, and with real leadership at the federal level. It's time for federal leadership on these critical issues – leadership from the White House that has been lacking as President Bush's last budget proposed significant cuts to water infrastructure and research funding.

"Those of us in the Great Lakes States who have been ardent supporters of Great Lakes policies need a friend in the White House. Barack Obama has the record and innovative plan that proves he will change the attitude in Washington about the issues like these that matter in people's lives in the Midwest."

Governor Jim Doyle, the Chairman of the Great Lakes Governors said, “America deserves to have a President who understands that supporting the Great Lakes isn’t just about scoring points during the election year, it’s about preserving our environment and protecting a vital economic engine in the Midwest. Our states need a partner in the White House like Barack Obama who has a proven track record of protecting the Great Lakes and advocating for our sportsmen, our tourism industry and our jobs. The Obama-Biden plan gives us in the Great Lakes states the support and change we need to grow our economy and secure our future.”

Obama has been a longtime advocate for the restoration of the Great Lakes, spearheading clean-up efforts in the Illinois State Senate and leading in the United States Senate on the bipartisan Great Lakes Compact -- legislation which ensures that the Great Lakes region can create jobs and support growth in a sustainable way. Obama was also a co-sponsor of the Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act and other legislation to help prevent the spread of invasive species, promote cleanup initiatives and projects, and prevent sediment pollution.

Just as President Bush has failed to fund Great Lakes initiatives during the past 8 years, John McCain has stood with Bush and refused to support measures that would give the Great Lakes states the support they need. And today, while campaigning for president, Senator McCain says he supports the Great Lakes, but he has repeatedly voted against critical legislation and even opposed measures to preserve the Great Lakes, including cleanup initiatives and projects to prevent sediment pollution. He also opposed funding to complete the Asian Carp Barrier Project to prevent invasive species from reaching the Great Lakes.

The Obama-Biden vision for the future of our Great Lakes will:

Provide New Federal Funding of $5 Billion to Jumpstart Great Lakes Restoration: Barack Obama will provide $5 billion in new federal funds to jumpstart the restoration work and help pay for sewage repairs, toxic cleanups, and wetlands restoration.

Designate a Great Lakes Coordinator to Prioritize Coordination of Federal, State and Local Agencies: To ensure the Great Lakes restoration efforts stay on track, Obama will create a position within the US EPA to oversee the funding, cut through red tape, and keep restoration efforts on track.

Reduce Toxic Hotspots and Address Mercury Pollution: They will comprehensively measure current toxic loadings, identify significant sources of new toxics, and develop an integrated strategy for reducing deposits in the Great Lakes that harm fish, wildlife and people.

Ratify and Fully Implement the Great Lakes Compact to Conserve Water and Protect Against Water Diversions: As President, he will work closely with the Governors and municipal leaders to encourage water conservation and avoid out-of-basin diversions in the future

Aggressive Action to control and prevent Invasive Species: Under the Obama plan, we’ll stop the discharge of invasive species from the ballast water of ships. And his administration will aggressively pursue policies and dedicate federal funds to control and prevent Asian Carp and other new harmful species from entering the Great Lakes.

We welcome Senator McCain and Governor Palin back to Minnesota for their brief stop at the airport. Senator McCain's stubborn insistence that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong" shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going on in the lives of middle-class Minnesotans.
And, unfortunately, not leaving the airport grounds won't do anything to change his out of touch perspective. Barack Obama understands the fundamentals of the economy and will cut taxes for 95 percent of Americans.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks

In remembrance of the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Senator Obama released the following statement:

Today, we honor the memory of the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, and grieve with the families and friends who lost someone they loved in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will never forget those who died. We will always remember the extraordinary efforts of our firefighters, police and emergency responders, and those who sacrificed their own lives on Flight 93 to protect their fellow Americans. And we give thanks for the Americans defending us every day in our communities at home, and in our military abroad.

On 9/11, Americans across our great country came together to stand with the families of the victims, to donate blood, to give to charity, and to say a prayer for our country. Let us renew that spirit of service and that sense of common purpose. Let us remember that the terrorists responsible for 9/11 are still at large, and must be brought to justice. Heartland for Change: Vikings Watch Party in Osakis

"SKOL VIKINGS! SKOAL OBAMA!" was the preferred chant at the home of Suzie and Jay in Osakis the Heartland Change RV stopped by for a Vikings football watch party. State Senator Tarryl Clark, Campaign for Change Outreach Director Scott Cooper, State Representative Mary Ellen Otremba, and State House candidate Bruce Campbell joined Obama supporters, Vikings fans, and a few Packers fans, to watch the game and learn about the Barack's Minnesota campaign for change.

Among the thirty or so people was Claremont, a die-hard Obama supporter, who got a chance to see the Senator when he visited Fargo, ND. Claremont proudly wore his "Barack to the Future" button, which he picked up during that trip:

Heartland for Change: Owatonna

With three robust roundtable discussions already under their belts, State Senator Tarryl Clark and Campaign for Change Outreach Director Scott Cooper travelled to Owatonna to join State Representative Patty Fritz, House candidate Kory Kath, and House candidate Jim Jensen for a roundtable on the economy.

They were greeted by over 60 supporters from Owatonna and the surrounding area, who were eager to exchange ideas and share their concerns with the Campaign for Change. There were quite a few teachers, each of whom offered their own perspective on No Child Left Behind's and on the importance of investing in education:

Senator Obama knows that teachers are on the cutting edge of the new economy. We're not going to do that with an uneducated workforce. He gets the big picture, and that's not something you often hear from politicians. He understand that you invest in teachers so they invest in their students.

Making sure that America remains fiscally responsible was also important to the folks in Owatonna. As one person explained.

We have to stop mortgaging our children's future to the incredible debt we have going. There are many ways to do this, but we have to tell the Republicans that you have to pay-as-you-go. That we have to be responsible.

State Senator Tarryl Clark agreed:

Barack Obama is proposing to pay for every plan he has... What a novel concept. He's showing how he's going to do it. To have that kind of discipline; to know that we do have to invest, but we needneeed to do it responsibly and he's doing it.

Barack Obama’s Minnesota Campaign for Change will be hitting the road next week, with the launch of a Greater Minnesota Heartland for Change RV tour across the state, highlighting Barack’s comprehensive plans to bring jobs, health care and economic resurgence to Minnesota’s small towns, cities and middle-class families.

The Heartland Change RV has been making its way across the country listening to voters who have been hit hard by the failed Bush/McCain economic policies of the last eight years.

The News Out of St. Paul: Community Organizing, Community Responsibility

Whether combating anti-Semitism in post-World War II Minneapolis or standing up for farmers facing foreclosure and the loss of their livelihood during the Farm Crisis of the mid-80s, community organizers like Hubert Humphrey and Paul Wellstone empowered ordinary people to do extraordinary things on behalf of the common good.

During the Republican National Convention, thousands of ordinary Minnesotans came together, driven by their belief that America can't afford another four years like the last eight, to support for Barack Obama and Joe Biden's campaign for change.

These "everyday organizers" developed their community organizing skills at Camp Obama, where over 500 grassroots supporters from every corner of Minnesota learned the techniques and strategy that will drive this campaign to victory.

And while the Republicans were in St. Paul talking to their special interest and lobbyist friends, these ordinary Minnesotans were making phone calls and going door-to-door talking to their friends and neighbors about Barack Obama's plan to make the economy work for American families.

Women reached out to women and neighbors to neighbors, with remarkable success. Over the last three days, more than 1000 volunteers knocked on over 25,000 doors and identified thousands of Obama supporters across Minnesota, spreading Barack's message of change directly to the people.

While the Republicans were in town, deriding community organizing, the Campaign for Change was out in the community doing just that--bringing new voices into the process by registering voters, encouraging folks to help those affected by Hurricane Gustav, and coming together at benefit concerts and on college campuses to change this country.

Tomorrow, after the lobbyists and the McCain attack squad have left St. Paul, the Minnesota Campaign for Change will still be out in the community, making phone calls, knocking on doors, and spreading Barack's message of hope and change.

For years, Minnesotans have proved that when ordinary folks devote part of their busy lives to organizing and building their communities, they have the power to affect change. And that's what's happening today across this state, and across this country.

Responsibilities of a Community Organizer

Last night in St. Paul, the Republicans demonstrated just how out-of-touch with everyday Americans they are. Instead of offering their ideas to better our economy and lift up the middle class, Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin chose to use their time to insult community organizing.

Minnesotan's know better. Minnesotans know that change happens when ordinary people work together to make it happen. This has been true throughout our history: community organizing is the foundation of every major change in our history--from the civil rights movement to women's suffrage. And that's been the promise of Barack's campaign for change since the beginning.

After eight years of George Bush, and John McCain's promise of four more years of the same, it's no surprise that Americans are coming together in neighborhoods across this country to change the course of this country and of history

Elana Wolowitz of the organization Wellstone Action writes in her blog Responsibilities of a Community Oragnizer about the nature of organizing within a community, and the tremendous responsibility that this type of organizing comes with.

Elana writes:

Being an organizer means putting the needs of the community above yourself and your ego. Your task is to influence the powerful with little more than the common will, and do so while developing the leadership of those around you. A good organizer is always working to put themselves out of a job, because many others should be prepared to step up and take their place. I guss when you do not have any plat form to run on, the easy way out is to attack with outright lies. How can a person born and rasied in the most civilized nation of the world could think this way? dream to win by trash talk and sarcasm. It buffled me. I can clearly see how desprate John Macane and his "Conservative" in this case hypocrat, VP, win the white house with nothing but their shameless attack on Barack Obama and his supporters. However all these should not discourage us from our quest to change America, rather motivate us to work twice harder. Lets fight back her smear attack with nothing but the truth.

Next week, John McCain and his lobbyist and special interest friends are coming to St. Paul for the Republican National Convention. They will officially nominate John McCain to continue George W. Bush's disastrous economic policies for another four years.

American Corn Growers Association Endorses Obama

The Crown Growers Association announced their endorsement of Barack Obama for president this morning, citing his leadership on the issues important to rural Americans, notably his support of the Farm Bill.

This is only the second time that the ACGA has endorsed a presidential candidate.

Earlier this month, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar visited Farm Fest to announce the formation of Rural Minnesotansfor Obama.

Here are some excerpts from the ACGA press release on the endorsement, highlighting Barack's commitment to Rural Americans:

"When we compared the official policy statements and voting records of the two contenders for the White House, we identified an obvious choice for farm families and rural America,” announced Keith Bolin, ACGA president and a corn and hog farmer in Obama’s home state of Illinois. “We have closely studied the on-line agricultural and rural policy statements of the two candidates and their voting records. Following a meeting with the Obama campaign at our board conference in Omaha last week, the decision was clear to us. ACGA endorses and supports the election of Senator Obama for President of the United States.”

“At this time of great opportunity to rebuild not only rural America, but all America through an aggressive national commitment to renewable energy of all kinds, the voting record and policy statements of Senator Obama and Senator McCain indicate very contrasting differences,” added Bolin.

“While John McCain is a great man and a true hero, he has built a very pronounced and consistent record on agriculture and ethanol during his twenty-two years as a U.S. Senator, and it is perhaps the single most negative record of any Senator,” explained Bolin. “When compared to Senator Obama, who supports the expansion of renewable energy such as advanced ethanol, biodiesel and wind generated electricity, our decision was obvious.”

“Senator Obama also supported the recently passed Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 -- or as it is commonly called, the farm bill,” explained Bolin. “Farmers and rural voters understand the importance of farm bills. These packages not only address agriculture and farms, but cover the full dynamic scope of issues vital to rural America: conservation, trade, rural development, research, nutrition, rural credit, and more. In fact, the new farm bill spends over 80 percent of its resources on non-farm programs and rightfully does not even have ‘farm’ in its title.”

“So it is not lost on rural Americans that Senator McCain has opposed every farm bill that has come before Congress for more than a decade. It did not matter if the farm bills were written under Republicans or Democrats. It did not matter if the farm bill came at a time when crop prices were high or low, reflected policies that were “liberal” or “conservative,” or stressed conservation, rural development, trade, or research. Senator McCain opposed them all and publically demanded that President Bush veto this year’s farm bill.”

Bolin concluded his statement by addressing the issue of experience. “I can say unequivocally as an Illinois farmer that Senator Obama has exactly the same amount of experience in terms of time served in the Illinois Legislature and in the U.S. Congress as another Illinois lawyer who was elected President just as the nation was coming apart at the seams - Abraham Lincoln. Senator Obama is ready to lead America and the American Corn Growers wholeheartedly endorse him for President of the United States of America.”

Great Find: I came across this web site that clears up misconceptions about Obama's stand on issues like abortion, gay marriage etc. http://www.matthew25.org/paf/index.htm. Many people of Christian and other faiths have strong feelings about these issues which influence their vote.

UNTRUE things have been circulating about his beliefs in these areas. AND to win this election he DOES NEED some of the "evangelicals" or whatever other names they go by. Bush won largely because he got their votes---saying he was such a devote Christian.

This site also clears up the misconception about taxes "that ALL democrats increase taxes" and lists his tax plan .

Please share this site as well as the www.fightthesmears.com and www.truthfightsback.com sites with people who have concerns or have heard things that are not true.

I know there are many who feel politics and religion should not mix BUT those that feel that religious beliefs show the character, ethics and values of a candidate---NEED this information b/4 they will consider voting for someone.

That's a big reason the attacks are out there including the lying "Obama Nation" book. The other side knows that lies and smears DO WORK. SO WE NEED to stop them and bring the truth.

Minnesota's 12 Year Old Barackstars

Yesterday, one of the interns at our St. Paul Headquarters, 12 year old Natalie, brought her friend Harris. Natalie, who plans on startinga Barackstars group at her junior high, comes into the office almost every day, registering voters, phonebanking, and canvassing.

Natalie and Harris got a chance to sit in on the all-state staff training, which included a visit from Rep. Betty McCollum, and a briefing from State Director Jeff Blodgett.

After the training, both Natalie and Harris hit the phones, talking to undecided voters across the state, and sharing why they support Barack.

Here's a picture of Harris phonebanking. Although he enjoyed talking to people on the phone, Harris said what he really wants to do is go out and canvass.

What a great way to be introduced to politics and to express your support for Senator Obama!

Write a letter or editorial to your local news paper, expressing "Why Barack Obama should become the next US President".
Draw a picture of Senator Barack Obama or "an expression of Democracy". For example, the Senator sitting in the White House or working on Capitol. Hill. You can send your drawing to the Minnesota Campaign for Change Headquarters in St. Paul and it will be posted for everyone to see!
Implement T-Shirt Thursday. Get friends to wear an official Obama for America T-Shirt to school on Thursdays.

Young Evangelical Christians Uniting Behind Obama

Senator Obama is making confident waves among the evangelical community. Young evangelicals have been particularly receptive to his message, as they are increasingly concerned with issues like poverty, the Iraq War, climate change, genocide in Darfur, human trafficking, and religious freedom at home and abroad.

A recent Pew Forum poll of evangelical voters found McCain's lead among evangelicals smaller than Bush's in 2004, and this has many Republicans strategists worried. U.S. News and World Report recently quoted a “major McCain fundraiser” as saying, “The evangelical movement is changing … It's moving to a bigger place.”

I’m personally excited to announce that young evangelicals will be able to carve out a “bigger place” for themselves in the Obama campaign via a website project that boldly proclaims: “Young. Evangelical. For Obama.”

The site will allow young evangelicals to unite in their support for Obama and his broad moral agenda. In addition to showing their support, the group will engage in community service projects and American Values house parties geared toward youth.

Senator Obama called on youth to rise and overcome the challenges that still obstruct us:
The previous generation, the Moses generation, pointed the way. They took us 90% of the way there. We still got that 10% in order to cross over to the other side. New Yorker Cover: WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR!!!

I couldn't believe what is on the cover of The New Yorker. I usually look forward to the funny and often deeply satirical cover art, but this one shocked and outraged me.

The cover shows Obama in a turban and traditional Muslim garb and his wife Michelle dressed in fatigues--rocking an afro and combat boots--and packing an assault rifle. They are giving one another a congratulatory "fist-bump." There is a portrait of Osama Bin Laden above the fireplace where the American flag is burning. Oh, and by the way, the room they're standing in... it's the Oval Office!

Now I know that The New Yorker is known for cartoons that people either "get" or "don't get"...

But I have to say, "I don't get it!"

Could someone please explain the joke to me?

The New Yorker described Barry Blitt's work as lampooning of "scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign."

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

"But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree," Burton added.

Cartoonist Barry Blitt defended his work, saying this:

I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic [let alone as terrorists] in certain sectors is preposterous. It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is.

Although this may be the intention, the damaging impact of reinforcing rumors of the "Manchurian Candidate" variety by depicting imagery like this in the American popular media cannot be underestimated.

Throughout America, it is still widely believed that Barack Obama is a Muslim--and many readers may not realize that the cover is meant to be satirical. In its attempt to point out the obvious--that Obama is NOT a terrorist or Muslim or Black Power/"kill whitey" candidate--it may unfortunately have the opposite effect.

I'm not including the cover image here because I don't want to proliferate it unnecessarily, but I would like to encourage you to write a letter to the editor of the New Yorker to express your outrage at this racist, divisive, offensive and generally unfunny cover art.

Minnesota Obama Supporters Needed!!

My name is Alyssa Martin, and I will be providing regular updates on the Faith-Action-Change blog as an intern with the Religious Affairs dept. of the Obama campaign. I am enthusiastic about this role because I believe we urgently need to foster an open dialogue among people of faith and conscience. This belief stems from my own multifaceted experience with religion. Raised Catholic, I've encountered Hinduism in my grandparents, and have formed close bonds with fellow Jewish, Muslim, and Protestant students at Stanford University. In addition, I have promoted dialogue among those with a purely academic interest in religion via a seminar entitled "Politically Incorrect: Let's Talk About Religion."

Tax Confusion

I don't get the arguments MCcain is making on taxes. How does rolling back some of the taxes for multi billion dollar corporations and shifting some of the tax burden off of the middles class to the extremely rich constitute spending? all i have heard is shifting money around to make things more fair. what has Obama suggested spending over the current budget? Am i missing something? seriously, because i am trying to look at all sides and this just seems dumb. and people are eating it up.

so what is the rationale behind the rich paying less in taxes? and when we say rich, we are talking about people who are making a LOT of money right? Like people whos TAKE HOME income is huge? and then once that happens, we dedicate the excess funds to tax relief for the middles and lower class and other needs? What is wrong with this? seriously, i am not trying to make a statement or witty sarcastic comentary, i rally want to know if i am understanding this correctly because It doesnt seem like we are ever really debating the right things.

We gather together today at this ancient public square, in the shadow of the Roman Forum, to answer the call of our country, the United States of America, to exercise our right as a free people to choose the next American President. This is an historic moment of opportunity for the American people. And it is an honor today to be joined by our Italian friends as they in these days choose a new government for their nation. This Forum is hallowed ground for both Italians and Americans. For us as Americans, the Forum is hallowed because the framers of our American constitution looked back to the ancient Roman Republic which inspired some of the most advanced thinking of our Founding Fathers and Mothers.

Even the Roman Emperors, one of whom is commemorated by this Trajan’s Column, invoked the spirit of the Roman people to lend legitimacy to their rule, and we in a more democratic age, as the American people, answer the call for new leadership, not an emperor or a tyrant, but rather one who will give new life to the spirit of our venerable constitutional democracy. In this 2008 election season we see living signs emerging once again of the self-confidence and optimism that marked the birth of our American nation, of that revolutionary generation’s bold assurance, in tough times, in looking to the future, based on the best traditions of our past embodied in a place like this Roman Forum, and in the spirit of “We the People.”

We are here today because we have dedicated ourselves to that democratic ideal by supporting Senator Barack Obama in his campaign for the White House, to follow him all the way to his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States.

We do this because we believe Barack Obama exhibits the bold assurance of our American Founders, that he is a great soul, strong to live, as well as to think. We do this because in this primary campaign he has rejected cynicism and the politics of the past, and instead he has made a fresh new connection to America’s sources of idealism which go all the way back to ancient Rome. Senator Obama has said that in recent years Americans have lost a uniting spiritual purpose, a narrative arc of purpose that unites all our citizens across the narrow divides of denomination, class, race, and ethnicity. He says that each day thousands of our people go about their daily routines, dropping off their kids, driving to the office, trying to stay on their diets. But work, possessions, busyness are not enough. Something more is required. And so today we invoke that great uniting spiritual purpose of our people that Barack Obama has reminded us of in this campaign.

We have answered the call and are here today because Senator Obama offers to us the kind of leadership in the office of the President that will create a more perfect union of common purpose, that will advance the profound aspirations of the American people, and that will once again give space to an American community of love, made up of believers and non-believers, of old and young, of red and blue.

Campaign Money, Not so Easy Come, But Easy Go

Of the $3,623,477 raised in Minnesota for 2008 presidential candidates, CNN reports that $1,118,400 was raised by Obama, $846,840 by Clinton, and $405,959 by McCain. Guiliana actually has exceeded McCain in the state with his $419,850.

For total contributions, Obama has raised over $240 million, to Clinton's $194 million, and McCain's $80 million. Total cash on hand currently sits at $51 million for Obama, $31 million for Clinton, and $11 million for McCain.

The interesting stat is how much the parties have raised: DNC $72 million to the RNC $149 million. That is where the prolonged Democratic race is hurting Obama. Money that could be spent targeting McCain is being spent for the current primaries coming up in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Are the Dem's shooting themselves in the foot by not coming to agreement on a candidate? Probably, but time will tell.

All I know is there are a lot of sick and hungry people out there that could use a little of this campaign money that is being spent on advertisements and such. Is the US so self-centered that we don't see this? Unfortunately, I think so. All I can do is hope and I am getting pretty good at that!

Target Center in Minneapolis, with over 20,000 people, progress in the polls, etc. The momentum is all moving in Obama's direction!

Let me urge you once again...to cast your vote on Tuesday for Barack...but

Obama Friends, I awoke today at 7:00 a.m. on a couch in a log cabin on State Road 300 outside of Mason City, Iowa. Much to my surprise, I was the last one awake: the six staffers and volunteers sharing the cabin with me were already up, dividing up walk lists of voters to visit, counting literature, and coordinating rides to our turf. The temperature was 16 degrees. I walked in to Coffee Cat, the local coffee shop, and found an Obama poster on the wall. At the Kum N’ Go, the attendant squealed with delight at my Obama pin. I sat in traffic on a snow-covered road behind a pick-up truck with an Obama bumper sticker. At 3:00 p.m. a camera from channel 3’s news team arrived in the office. We have a lot of work left to do but things feel good here. In Minnesota, Kansas, and North Dakota our campaign teams have generated over 2200 calls to Iowa voters each day for the last three days. Here in Iowa our teams have been knocking doors 8 hours a day and phone banking 4 hours a day since December 27. There are supporters here from as far away as California, Florida, and New York. We will knock our entire ID universe twice in these last 10 days. We are knocking doors of targeted Independents and Republicans, as well as Democrats. Melissa from Minneapolis and Sarah from New York, two volunteers in for the final 10 days, just returned from canvassing an area of 66 square miles. We are going to towns no campaign has knocked in before, and talking with voters that other campaigns will not talk to. This is an unprecedented field program. It is unmatched by any campaign in Iowa currently or previously. From North Dakota today great news: the endorsement of U.S. Senator Kent Conrad, an unprecedented show of support from North Dakota. In Minneapolis today Council Member Elizabeth Glidden pledged her support to Barack Obama. In 12 hours yesterday we worked together to generate 72 Iowa volunteer day commitments, and more are committing today. This morning in Mason City we were joined by 16 Minnesotans including Kim Ellison and her daughter Amira, Minneapolis Council Members Don Samuels and Paul Ostrow, and Paul’s son Matt. This past Wednesday St. Paul Congresswoman Betty McCollum joined Senator Obama in Mason City. On Sunday Council Member Glidden will join us to knock doors. On Wednesday Minneapolis Council Member Ralph Remington and his wife, and Minneapolis Mayor Rybak and his family will join us here in Mason City. This weekend Senator Cohen, Representative Jaros, and Duluth Council Member Elect Tony Cuneo will phone bank with us from Minnesota. I'm thinking about Barack's words on the video that is currently up on the website Canvass for Change page...It just takes a little bit of effort by all of us and we're not just going to win an election, we're going to transform our nation. Now that's a big, hairy, audacious goal (BHAG) that I can get excited about.

But it won't just happen by itself. We have to make it happen. With just a little bit of time and effort (and money for those who can) from all of us...we can make sure that Barack wins Iowa, MN, (insert your state here:), the nomination and the presidency. What an honor to be involved in such an historic undertaking! I'm going to be telling my grandchildren about this someday.

Jeeping for Barack 1st trip is a success

The great thing about grassroots campaigning is that every little thing each and everyone of us do can make a diference.

On Saturday October 6, I headed out for my first "Jeeping for Barack" in Peterborough, NH. I arrived around 12:00 and started making my rounds through Main Street, downtown and local shopping plazas. At first I was a little hesistant, but after a few waves, thumbs up and honks, I new Barack had a strong showing in Peterborough.

I did this for an hour, finally parking on Main Street for another 30 minutes. People would wave, take pictures of my Jeep and trailer, encouraging my "visibility campaign" for the Senator.

Every little thing we do brings us closer to electing Barack as our President.
