Our committment to President Obama did not end on November 4th, it should have strengthened our resolve. We all knew going into this that true change would not be easy. Washington is the way that it has been because of old tired partisan politics and people stuck in a certain mind frame and putting country , not second, but last . As President Obama is going through trying to get his stimulus bill passed we need to do all that we can to support him, including writting to our editors as well as the cable news shows and our congress. He has proven to Americans time and time again that he has our Best interest in mind. So when The Republicans raise up ....then he must be doing something right because we have been living through 8 years of doing everything Wrong! Think About It then Act!

Great inaugural moments » On Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President. On this historic occasion, PARADE asked the President-elect, who is also a devoted family man, to get personal and tell us what he wants for his children. Here, he shares his letter to them.

Dear Malia and Sasha,

I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.

When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.

I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential—schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.

I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.

Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country—but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free—that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.

That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.

She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better—and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.

I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much—although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.

These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.

I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.

Whistle Stop Tour Event Details Announced

We just released more details about the events along President-elect Obama’s Whistle Stop Tour from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. on January 17th. Tickets already have been distributed for the first event in Philadelphia, while the other events in Wilmington and Baltimore will be open to the public.

The train tour marks the final leg of the President-elect’s incredible journey that began on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Illinois and will end on the steps of the United States Capitol. How to fix Social Security

It's not rocket science, folks. It's very easy to fix social security.

First, underestand that it is NOT, and NEVER has been, an "insurance" program. There is little relationship between what you put in and what you take out, little relationship between what you know when you begin and what you get at the end.

Social security is what is called a "dedicated tax system." A good example of a dedicated tax system is a toll road. The tolls are taxes that are generally "dedicated" to being used to build and repair the roads. Another example is the Pennsylvania lottery, which they always tell us is dedicated to help out old people in Pennsylvania. That means they're not supposed to take the proceeds of the toll roads and spend them on decorating the capitol building in Dover, and they're not supposed to take the proceeds of the Pennsylvania lottery and spend them on fisheries (no matter how noble an endeavor that might be.).

In the election of 2000, they talked about social security as a "locked box" - another way of describing the dedicated tax it is supposed to be. But President Bush has not used it as a locked box.

At any rate, it's a tax. But what KIND of a tax? It's a VERY REGRESSIVE tax.

A "progressive" tax is one where people who make a lot of money pay a greater percentage of their income on the tax. A "flat" tax is one where everybody pays the same percentage of their income. And a "regressive" tax is one where those with the lowest incomes actual pay the HIGHEST percentage of their incomes into the tax.

The social security tax - FICA - is grossly "regressive." That is because every worker who makes less than $100,000 pays exactly 7 1/2 percent off the top of their income into it. AND their EMPLOYERS cough up ANOTHER 7 1/2 percent! That adds up to 15 percent off the top of ALL labor income in this country - under $100,000 per year per person - goes straight to Uncle Sam.

It is supposed to go straight to the FICA purposes: unemployment insurance, disability insurance, old age insurance, Medicare, and what used to be called aid to families with dependent children and now is called "TANF" (Temporary Aid to Needy Families). But think of it as payments to people down on their luck and recently out of a job, aid to people too sick or disabled to work, aid to people too old to have to work, and aid to CHILDREN who live in conditions of severe poverty.

Every single one of the states had such provisions in their laws during the Revolution. And the word "welfare" in the preamble of the Constitution DOES include thinking about people for whom the lifecycle has brought sadness or tragedy.

Who would ROB this fund???? The Bush administration. They are using this tax - this highly regressive tax - to fund the government. While they scare everybody with the fear that the baby boom will be too big for social security.

Well, WILL the baby boom be too big for social security? POPPYCOCK!!

The key to understanding social security is the limit on who pays into it. We'll set Medicare aside for the moment. If you make $100,000, you and your employer together pay 15 percent into it. (Economists understand that unskilled workers are actually paying more of that 15 percent; I can't show you that without drawing a picture so just take my word for it - but for the moment we'll just say the total is 15 percent off the cost of labor in this country.

If somebody was to stand up and suggest a tax on 15% of all labor costs, would they get away with it? NO! But the country was sold a bill of goods in the 1930s (admittedly, it wasn't that bad - it was 1% each, or 2% in total, back then). The "insurance" lie was because people back then were ashamed to be "on the dole." They did not understand - we made this country. We taught these schools, cared for the kids, answered the phones, cleaned the buildings, cared for the sick, built cars and performed open heart surgery. We all contributed to this nation.

Okay. If YOU make $100,000, then the whole 15% goes out of your income. But if you make anything OVER $100,000, then none of that gets taxed. So if you make $200,000, you end up paying only 7 1/2 percent to Uncle Sam. keep the game going. $400,000? Only 3 3/4 percent goes into FICA. $1,000,000? 0.75 percent to Uncle Sam. Cindy McCain reported an income of 4.2 million last year. Of that, she paid ... the same amount into FICA as the guy who makes $100,000, which is 15,000 (counting the employer's contribution). Which means she pays at the MOST 0.36% of her income into FICA. Got that?

Cindy McCain pays AT MOST 0.36% of her income into what we call welfare and social security - whereas "Joe the Plumber" (if he makes $100,000 or less) has to pay $7.5 percent (about 20 tmes as much) plus his employer contributes 7.5 percent - to make the total FORTY TIMES AS MUCH AS CINDY MCCAIN, in terms of percentage of your income.

But hey, to somebody who pays $350,000 for a dress to wear while raising money for flood victims, who's counting?

Now, she probably makes at least $100,000 in taxable income because she is probably on a lot of boards of directors and they do get salaries. But much of her income is "unearned income" (I love that phrase) - it comes from stocks and bonds and other investments, including buying and selling homes. She doesn't pay ONE SINGLE PENNY into FICA from THOSE activities. Nobody does.

MONEY EARNED FROM SO-CALLED CAPITAL GAINS DOES NOT GET TAXED FOR SOCIAL SECURITY.

Now, for years libertarians trumpeted the concept of a "flat tax". But to me it was always a hollow call - because it left out gains on so-called "capital." Second homes. Office buildings. Buying and selling stocks back and forth.

So - HOW DO WE FIX SOCIAL SECURITY?

1. Make it a REAL FLAT TAX. EVERYBODY, no matter WHAT their income or HOW they earned it, is part of this country. EVERYBODY is responsible for that teacher you had who is now retired, the nurse who took care of you in the hospital who is now disabled. EVERYBODY. So everybody should pay the same. EVERYBODY IN THE NATION SHOULD GIVE 7 1/2 PERCENT OF THEIR GROSS INCOME TO FICA, NO MATTER HOW THEY EARNED THAT INCOME. EVERYBODY.

2. Get rid of the matching part - at least for small businesses.

Social security fixed. Baby boom funded. Gen X no longer on the hook.

And it's fair.

I admire Obama because he has refused to engage in character assassination.

Not so, the McCain-Palin campaign. They have started to employ incredibly dirty tactics, adopting the end-justifies-the-means philosophy of running the campaign.

Sarah Palin said that Obama “pals around” with terrorists. This is a lie.

Ayres, decades ago, was a member of the Weather Underground, a “terrorist organization.”

Today he is an educational reformer and responsible member of society. Sarah Palin lied when she said Obama “pals” around with terrorists.

And I do not believe that Obama is in any sense a “pal” of Ayres.

I know that you do not fall for these tactics.

Listen to Obama’s rebuttal of ridiculous charges that may arise.

By the way, Obama did answer these charges satisfactorily in the primary. I assume you are aware of that?

Americans are tired of the old politics of “anything goes” on the campaign trail.

P.S. I had a response to one of my letters to the effect that I should be spending my time canvassing or phone banking rather than writing letters and opeds. Well, that person assumed that I only write for this campaign. Not so. I have worked for no pay since January, on the ground--because of the importance of Obama's election--for America.

People can write and work on the ground. If you have the writing bent, use it...

This past weekend I canvassed in Fayetteville, NC for Obama. The most imspiring moment--kids from a poor neighborhood volunteered to pass out leaflets...They had incredible knowledge of Obama's biography, like the names of his girls, his birthplace.

Please take a moment to watch the Meet The Press clip or video below- even if you saw yesterday's show- it bears reviewing!- and then forward to your own individual mailing groups, especially your friends, family and acquaintances who are Republicans, Armed Forces Members, or undecided voters for whom you have email addresses.

I was personally shocked to see yesterday morning that Powell was making an endorsement as I thought he was going to stay neutral in this election; vote Obama but not share it publicly.

I do have to share that a fellow Obama supporter wrote the highlight section of Gen. Powell's comments but in her message she encouraged us to create our own message and forward this on so here I am. Please read the information below and share this with others especially if you know any undecided voters!

As Senator Obama said now is not the time to get cocky and as I say we are in the Homestretch!!!

Friends shouldn't let Friends Vote!...without helping them to have their questions answered, and their misconceptions undone.

I am so relieved that John McCain has moved away from the campaign of character assassination that has been promulgated by Sarah Palin and other extreme right-wingers in this country. Conservatism is fine. Racist attacks, thinly veiled, and guilt by association are not.

Barack Obama is a good man, more liberal than some would like, but he is no terrorist; He loves America, has strong family values, and displays intelligence and wisdom.

I salute John McCain for acknowledging that Obama is a man worthy of respect. I hope that he keeps it up. My own respect for McCain is being restored. I will vote for Obama, and look forward to Ovama, the president, negotiating with McCain, the senator--to fashion bipartisan legislation.

New email to the media re Palin's hate campaign

Enraged people at the Sarah Palin rallies shout out, “Kill him,” “Cut off his head,” “liar.” and the words Barack HUSSEIN Obama are repeated at several times, in a mocking, menacing tone. Palin and others on the extreme right are trying with all their might to promulgate the lie that Barack Obama is some kind of radical and that he “pals around with terrorists.” In fact, Obama has denounced the violent acts of Ayres and others in the Weather Underground—back in the 60s. Ayres, by the way, has gone on to be a respected professor at the University of Chicago , educational reformer and responsible member of the community. Obama is not particularly close to Ayres, and Ayres has no involvement in Obama’s Presidential campaign.

Palin and others have, clearly, been ginning up hatred; let’s hope this does not result in a threat to Obama’s physical safety.

Obama, meanwhile, is clearly not a radical. He is liberal, but has been leaning increasingly to the center. Further, he is no terrorist, and clearly loves America .

Ayres vs. Keating

Here is what makes the entire Ayres "accusation" so ugly:

They are NOT saying (of course) that Obama participated in any "Weather" activities - he was 7 years old.

They are saying that he should not have ASSOCIATED with Ayers.

On the face of it, to many people that sounds reasonable. But Ayers' past is HIS past. He is not under indictment for any crimes. To my knowledge Ayres isn't under consideration for any crimes.

So what does it mean to say Obama should have AVOIDED being around somebody who is not involved in any criminal activity, but has had "bad thoughts" in the past?

It's simple: that's how you get a blacklist. A person becomes blacklisted because it's "dangerous" to be associated with them.

This is the uglest, the seamiest side of the Republican Party: The McCarthy period of the early 1950s (Truman was just as bad; the Democrats had their own version - the State Department was decimated for decades because of it.)

The Keating story is different. It is a story about something John McCain actually did. I believe it would be wrong not to include that McCain apologized for it. But McCain was in the middle of the maelstrom the last time we had a fiancial meltdown, and all he seems to have learned from it is how to keep himself out of the ethical spotlight. Certainly nothing about the need of oversight in banking [the Keating failure happened in the middle of a savings and loans failure - S & L's were, in generl, state-chartered, and deposits were NOT protected as bank deposits were] Today the problems started with mortgage companies, not banks, that once again were outside the oversight sphere - and McCain was calling for less oversight in general. [Note: there already is an essay on this blog about McCain and Keating's involvement in the S&L scandals of the 1980s.]

I find it frustrating to see CNN and MSNBC compare the Keating and Ayres stories as if they were the same thing - let's balance one unpleasant story with another one. Barack Obama was not a member of the Weather underground. John McCain DID get scolded by the ethics committee for having intervened to get the regulators off Keating's back - before Keating ended up going to the slammer for five years.

The two are not the same. And yet, as I am typing this, I am listening to CNN saying "the two go back 13 years ..."

"Fellow travelers." That was the accusation by HUAC (the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities) that could get you fired, blacklisted - and if you refused to name the fellow travelers you knew, could put you in jail. It wasn't whether or not you were a member of the Communist Party in 1952 - but whether you were EVER a member of the Communist Party, or ever KNEW anybody who was a member of the Communist Party (fellow traveler status).

My uncle, who died as a bomber pilot in WWII, had been a member of the communist party as a college student in the 1930s. Would that have made my father a candidate for blacklisting, had he been in a career under investigation?

Probably not, because my uncle and my Dad were Appalachians. Where this game really got ugly was that the committee's first pass at finding "Communists" and "fellow travelers" was to go after urban Jews. There was a not-so-thinly-veiled element of anti-semitism in the entire project.

So here we are, back again. Associating with Ayers makes you the "same" as Ayres. Therefore, if you ever want to run for public office, don't associate with Ayres, or anybody who was like him thirty years ago. (When I think of some of the guys I used to date, nearly 40 years ago, maybe anybody who reads this ought to wash their mouths out with soap ... maybe I should be on a blacklist, not for anything I ever did, but for things some people I knew may have done. I can't help having been 19 in 1969.)

And that's what makes it disgusting. What makes it disgusting is the "fellow traveler" accusation, which, if successful, leads to blacklists, rewards prejudice, diminishes our nation.

Write to the media regarding the tactics of the McCain-Palin campaign

Barack Obama is a man of integrity and authenticity who has been running a very positive campaign. He has pledged to end the War in Iraq while bringing our troops home safely. He will strive to bring the people and Parties together in DC, and folks from all walks of life around the country. He is a man of intelligence and creativity, but he clearly has his ego under control. He has stressed over and over that he has is not a perfect person or candidate.

Another thing I admire about him is that he has refused to engage in character assassination. Not so, the McCain-Palin campaign. They have started to employ incredibly dirty tactics, adopting the end-justifies-the-means philosophy of running the campaign.

Sarah Palin said that Obama “pals around” with terrorists. This is a lie. Ayres, decades ago, was a member of the Weather Underground, a “terrorist organization.” Today he is an educational reformer and responsible member of society. Sarah Palin lied when she said Obama “pals” around with terrorists. And I do not believe that Obama is in any sense a “pal” of Ayres.

I hope that you do not fall for these tactics. Listen to Obama's rebuttal of ridiculous charges that may arise. By the way, Tom, Obama did answer these charges in the primary. I assume you aware of that?

Americans are tired of the old politics of "anything goes" on the campaign trail.

I was enormously proud of Joe Biden. Palen did much better than expected. On the issues, Biden hands down. I am still very nervous about her. The extreme right exert enormous pressure on her to go along, as they have with Bush.

I am nervous about her asserion that the VP should have MORE power.

This was not a game changer, but I think that Joe did great.

She is much brighter than I thought. Biden is much more likeable than I thought. And he is very smart.

She does not scare me as much. But the religious right scares me. And she is immeshed in that culture.

Commercialized Financial Industry, Healthcare, Social Security, and News Media

While opportunities, competition, and rewards of hard work can be advantages of a commercialized culture, some aspects of life are too crucial to commercialize. Currently we are seeing the negative effects of commercialized banking and lending industries, healthcare insurance and services, news media, and even politics.

Our banking and lending industry is collapsing, in large part to deregulation policies that have allowed the financial industry (banks, mortgage lenders, and credit card companies) to prey upon individuals who don't have the financial expertise or advisement to fully understand the risks involved in accepting these loans they could not afford. Hopefully the public will begin to recognize that this industry's intention is to make money, not to provide homes that we want and can afford.

Similarly, the healthcare industry primarily consists of commercialized, for-profit companies that seek to minimize costs and maximize profits. Their primary goal is making money, not seeking to provide quality healthcare that supports medical research and bridges research and practice.

We also are seeing the effects of a commercialized television, which seeks less to impart accurate information and more to entertain us through sensationalized and distorted opinions.

Senator McCain has defended deregulation, even as the financial industry was in crisis. Last month he said he would also deregulate the healthcare industry. He also wants to privatize (commercialize) social security and leave individuals who are the least knowledgable of investments vulnerable to a financial industry that has profits as its primary goal, not the "security" of each individual's retirement.

Senator McCain lives an opulent lifestyle that is out of touch with America. His policies and plans are developed with an intention to benefit those like himself- wealthy investors and businessmen. He does not personally understand the implications of risking our financial security and health through deregulation. Most Americans do not have other homes, cars, and portfolios to fall back on in these times of crisis.

On the other hand, Senator Obama supports policies which protect those aspects of our lives that should not be vulnerable to commercialization without proper accountability and oversight. His plan will reform the regulatory structure that made the current crisis possible.

PLEASE MR. OBAMA, FIGHT AGAINST FORECLOSURES

I was concerned to read this morning that the compromise worked out (before McCain came in and played his little game) did NOT include the restructuring of mortgages so that there are as few forclosures as possible.

This MUST be a part of ANY plan - particularly a plan by a Democrat. Forget all the talk about people flipping houses or getting big homes in McNeighborhoods that they could not afford. Talk to anybody who has been through the mortgage crisis in Cleveland. It is a nightmare, and will cause even more shocks to society, community - AND the economy.

This is the time for the Senator to remember his days as a community activist and not behave as if he is embarassed by it.

Many people can stay in their homes if the mortgages are restructured to fixed rates, and it will save communities as well. Think of the children involved, if nothing else.

If the Democrats push a bill that does not include mortgage relief - and then people are kicked out of their homes, we will be blamed for it.

Finally, if there is such a thing as a Democratic Party, the Party of FDR, we must not kick families when they are down. I know many people who have shaky second mortgages because of the high cost of medical expenses due to an unexpected bout of cancer, for example. There are many who have faithfully paid their monthly bills, but cannot afford the ballooning up of the monthly cost. We need to keep them in their homes.

In the S&L crisis of the 1980s (albeit much smaller), this is precisely what we did - we renegotiated mortgages to keep people in their homes.

Please, Senator Obama, please do not let the Republicans trap you into a position you do not want to be in. It is the Republicans who have broken faith - so the Democrats must come back with their own counter offer - which MUST include protecting homeowners.

We are all so tired of Democrats being more Republican than the Republicans. This must be a deal-breaker issue, and let the Republicans take the blame.

John McCain and the "Keating Five"

As I looked at John McCain’s face on TV over the past week, the classic deer-in-the-headlights look, I found myself thinking of the “Keating Five,” and the events that surrounded it.

Obama has not been here before – but McCain has.

A generation ago, the savings and loan industry had to be rescued because they were over-extended on 30-year mortgages, and their main source of income was very short-term deposits.

The national “banking” industry (to be technical, a “bank” must have bank in its name and be regulated by one of the federal regulatory agencies, or have “N.A.” at the end of its name – the origination of the non-name “MBNA”, originally Maryland Bank, N.A. – and likewise, face regulation.) I am told that regulation is not perhaps the operative word – what I am thinking of is “oversight”. Whatever.

The point is that banks that were regulated were visited by bank regulators, and one of their jobs was to ask the “stress” question – such as, “what are you going to do with these loans if interest rates go up and the price of houses go down” – a question clearly not asked of anybody in the past decade.

Federal savings and loans were regulated (by what we called “Flub” – see previous essay) – but most S & L’s were state-chartered and state-regulated.

In most cases the S & L’s got in trouble really through no overt fault of their own – it was the combination of high rates of inflation and a lot of old mortgages in their portfolios.

But in some cases, there really was some fraud going on. The most spectacular of those cases involved a man named Charles Keating. He ended up with a 5-year prison sentence for acrobatics with the books.

That’s where John McCain comes in. McCain’s early career as a politician was funded by his friend Charles Keating. When the Keating crisis occurred, five Congressmen with personal associations to Charles Keating came under investigation – including John McCain. The Senate concluded that McCain really did not know what was going on, and they just slapped him on the wrist and told him to be more careful. John Glenn, the former Astronaut, was another of the Keating Five who got his wrist slapped – but his career as a senator was essentially over. In the end, McCain was the only one who stayed in Congress.

I always gave McCain the benefit of the story – that is, I believed that he really did not know that Keating was a con artist. Or that Keating’s machinations had cost real people a lot.

But here we are now. If there is anyone who should understand what we are facing, it should be John McCain. He’s been here before.

And yet, there he is, with that deer-in-the-headlights look, with conflicting and confusing messages, and now refusing to debate Obama Friday night, as promised months ago.

He did not understand what was going on back in the 1980s. You would have thought, after all the fuss, he would have learned. Clearly, he did not. He still does not understand.

He does not want to remember – but that does not mean we have to forget.

Race A Discussion Obama Doesn't Want

When the Democratic primary descended into a charged debate about black and white and Sen. Barack Obama's racially polarizing pastor last spring, Obama took the stage to address the question of race head-on.

"Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now," Obama told those assembled at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center and a nationally televised audience in March.

His campaign, though, didn’t follow his lead.

Instead, his aides have steered clear of any explicit discussion of racial inequality or of his pioneering campaign as they try to woo swing voters, some of whom may be discomfited by the notion of the first black president.

"The best time for a national conversation on race is when he's president," Bill Perkins, a New York state senator from Harlem and early Obama supporter, said Saturday, expressing a widely held view among Democrats.

But the national conversation appears to have arrived. Racial considerations that have long been palpable in southern Ohio and other crucial regions are again in the foreground. A new poll that accompanied a much buzzed-about Associated Press article on Saturday appears to starkly quantify the cost of racism to Obama: 6 percentage points in the polls.

And Friday's debate will bring the campaign to the Deep South and offer the symbolism of an integrated debate at Ole Miss, the scene of a brutal battle over integration a generation ago. That conversation creates a moment with risks for both candidates — though perhaps greater risks for Obama.

Many Democrats see the explicit discussion of race and politics as almost unambiguously negative for Obama, a reminder to voters of fraught questions of identity and a distraction from the economic troubles that have dominated the headlines in recent days and could bury Obama's rival, Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee.

That's exactly the model followed by Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, who has made a career of electing executives of color. The campaigns he has run for mayor in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, and for governor of Massachusetts have, like Obama's, relied on combining a group's quiet pride in its favorite son with a determinedly post-racial message of hope and unity.

Axelrod’s outlook was manifest at the Democratic National Convention, where Martin Luther King Jr.’s son addressed the crowd, but Obama's speech accepting his party’s nomination, delivered on the 45th anniversary of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech, never mentioned the slain civil rights icon by name.

A Republican strategist, Todd Harris, also suggested the country's economic woes could intensify racial tensions in key states. "The tragic irony is that the more the economic crisis helps Obama among some voters, it could cost him as much as it helps in some key states because of heightened racism sparked by tough times," he said.

But if Democrats hope to muffle a discussion of race, which polling and reporting have long suggested is a crucial factor in swing states, discussion of it also carries risks for the Republican nominee. McCain has largely steered clear of anything that could be interpreted as race-baiting, and the Republican Party earlier this year warned its officials to stay on message on the sensitive topic. "They're going to face an avalanche of criticism if they touch the race issue with a 1,000-foot pole," said Clegg.

More subtly, the recent survey findings carry the risk that McCain’s candidacy could be cast as relying on racism. His supporters have objected vociferously to lines of analysis like that of a recent Slate article headlined, "Racism is the only reason McCain might beat [Obama]."

Even the suggestion that McCain's campaign is reliant on racism could alienate some voters.

"There are a lot of suburban moderates who want to turn the page in the biggest possible way from [President] Bush, and voting for Obama gives them a chance to not only make history, but to prove something to themselves about their own evolved feelings on race," said Harris.

Aides to Obama and McCain declined to discuss the impact of the race conversation Saturday, a mark of its sensitivity. And virtually everyone involved recognizes that the impact of race is difficult to predict.

"Some Americans out there will vote for Barack Obama, even though they disagree with him, because they would like to see America move beyond this," said veteran Republican strategist Alex Castellanos. "And there are some Americans who have not moved beyond this."

The campaigns came closest to an open debate over race in late July after Obama predicted the GOP's attack plan would use it. "What they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," he told a crowd in Missouri. "You know, he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

The McCain campaign swiftly rejected any suggestion that it was mining racial resentment and blamed Obama for bringing up the topic.

"Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "It's divisive, negative, shameful and wrong."

Obama may have stated his feelings, or at least his intentions, most plainly last year in New Hampshire, in the placid waters of the Democratic primary. Then, Time magazine reported, an "aging hippie" asked Obama if he would launch another "national conversation about race."

Obama responded in the negative.

"I'm less interested in a conversation about race in the abstract," he said. "All the self-flagellation, it's not useful. African-Americans get all riled up, and whites get defensive."

Hi. I am a disabled historian - disabled is the wrong word; I am ill with a neurological disease and unfortunately in the middle of a relapse. I can't do much in the way of knocking on doors or even making phone calls.

But I can write. I am putting together a blog that hopefully can explain, step by step, the reasons that this election is absolutely critical to avoiding an economic (and international) disaster on the scale of the one this nation faced - and met - during the "Greatest Generation."

I have just put up a new post making the brief case that choosing McCain in 2008 is putting Herbert Hoover in charge of a crisis he could not possibly understand (as Hoover was in charge between 1929 and 1933), and that Obama has both the personal experience and the broader education (supported by Biden's experience) to play the role of FDR.

I am well aware that there are many on this list who have absolutely no idea what happened to this country eighty years ago. That is why I will post a series of essays on my blog to explain it (for those who need the explaining). Economists and historians do not agree on precisely how things got that bad, or why we managed to escape - my own position is drawn from a lot of theories on the subject.

Today, as in 1929, we have a nation that is still roaring in some sectors - but has been in stagnation and disarray for decades in others. One by one, the automatic stabilizers that were put into place (sometimes without regard to their incidental usefulness in avoiding another major crash) have been taken away. Worse, the conviction that the market is always right has led to the abandonment of regulatory controls (or, more precisely, their extention to new institutions created to take advantage of being outside the loop) that today endanger the foundation of the nation. Natural disasters are adding to the long-run damage just as they did in the 1930s - hurricanes today, dust bowls and locusts then. The Fed can't keep lowering interest rates forever.

We are also fighting two wars - we fought a world war in the 1940s, but everyone was asked to pitch in and help back then. This time it's all the easy way out. The very rich are complaining about the prospects of having their Bush tax cuts revoked (that brought their taxes down to only 35 percent of what they earned, after deductions) - whereas the highest incomes in the nation during World War II were taxed at a rate of over 90 percent (for incomes over one million dolalrs a year.)

The dangers of ideologues, charasmatic religions, hate-led politics - they existed then, and they exist now. We could have taken the wrong turn back then, and we were in some ways lucky that we did not.

Herbert Hoover was a nice man in the wrong place from the moment he took office in 1929. And John McCain is Herbert Hoover. We have the chance to elect someone of the caliber of FDR now - not after four more years of economic, social, and international deterioration.

Everything else is frosting. Decoration. Distractions.

Go out and tell people that the Republican Party did not lead us out of the Great Depression - it led us into it. FDR was not a Republican, no matter what they seem to want to claim today. It's not just the so-called "American Dream" that is at risk here; it is America itself.

They will throw everything at us, as they did in 2000. So we cannot win by one point - we must win by ten points, everywhere. So close to Pennsylvania, that means Delawareans must go there (as I cannot) and help Obama/Biden win that state in a landslide.

When I am through with the essays on the Great Depression and its similarities to today, I will then post a series of essays on the hypocracy, lies, and terroristic practices that characterized the American South from our founding in 1789 to the present. The Dixiecrats have left the Democratic Party (it was always an unholy alliance) to inreasingly dominate the Republican Party. The tricks and games of Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004 were straight out of the old Dixiecrat playbook - and you can expect to see them again in 2008.

I can't be out there making sure there are enough voting booths in Democratic precincts as in Republican; I can't be out there making sure that voters understand that this election is far too critical to turn on a vague "uneasiness" about Barack Obama or an affection for a McCain "maverick" who never really existed, and certainly doesn't exist now. This is urgent. You have to help people understand.

All I can still do is write, and right now even that takes a lot of resting in between. I hope it helps. Use it or not.

The blogosphere is reporting that when she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, in the late 1990s, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's municipal police department charged rape victims for the "rape kit" used to collect the forensic evidence necessary to convict their attackers. According to reports, this changed in 2000 when then Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles signed a bill protecting rape victims from being charged. As I wrote recently, however, the situation described in Wasilla is not unique. In all too many instances, women are still being stuck with the bill for rape kits. This despite the fact that in order to qualify for federal grants under the Violence Against Women Act, states are supposed to pick up the entire tab.

If on her watch Sarah Palin allowed women to be charged for rape kits, she has some serious explaining to do. But while she's undoubtedly the most visible offender, if the story is true, she's unfortunately not the only one to have permitted this reprehensible practice.

Why McCain is dangerous on Iraq

What I see happening with Iraq is that the public (the side of the public that actually thinks invading Iraq was a good idea) thinks that the main problem is that Bush and co. screwed it up. They see McCain as somebody who can go in and fix it - like Eisenhower ran on fixing Korea (which he fixed by leaving.)

So he must be pinned down as to what he thinks "victory" would look like, and how that would be possible. He must be pinned down as to how he thinks we're going to afford this. And he must be pinned down as to his statements that the only way to keep volunteers in this all-volunteer army is to deny them WWII-like benefits when they are through.

lani's speech is an example of true desperation. This is the same old tired tactics so often thrown down voters throats. Telling rude jokes and belittling those that oppose is a common tactic in the old way of politics. When are they going to understand that people are tired of this. Tonight, Guilani not only offended Obama. He offended voters, by suggesting that the people that support Obama are sitting around waiting for Government to save them and that community organizingt is a joke. Organizers throughout the United States are helping children, disabled children, families and the elderly. I suppose helping people that oftentimes can't help themselves is joke. Sorry if I don't get the joke. Organizers and Volunteers helped the women's movement. This focus on diminishing community work is disappointing. I am very independent, proud self-motivated, thinking woman and I am equally an offended woman. This suggestion that a soccer mom is a Major ingredient needed to connect with the hard-working women in America is an insult. What I don't understand is, if Gov. Palin is tough enough to go up against the elite Republicans of her party then why should Senator Biden respond cautiously as not to offend her during debates? This woman says that she is ready to be President. I believe wholehearted that no one asked that men speak cautiously when debating Hillary. Her record is up for grabs and jokes about her record and her past is up fair game. Tonight, I have witnessed disgusting behaviors and gross tackiness on the behalf of inner-circle Republican elite. I will spent every hour getting out the vote. Thanks Republicans for taking an energized person to a higher level. Your efforts are duly noted.

Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to
the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet
with President Bush."

The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president
and no longer resides here."

The old man said, "Okay" and walked away.

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the
same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Bush is no
longer president and no longer resides here."
The man thanked him and again, just walked away.

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very
same U. S. Marine, saying, "I would like to go in and meet with President
Bush."

The Marine, somewhat agitated at this point, looked a t the man and said,
"Sir, this is the third day in a row you have
been here asking to speak to Mr. Bush. I've told you already that Mr. Bush
is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you
understand?"

The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love
hearing it."

The Marine smiled, snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "Sir, see you
tomorrow."

GRASSROOTS FOR OBAMA IN WASHINGTON DC

FREEDOM PLAZA, PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE

SEPTEMBER 6, 2008

This will be a rare opportunity for grassroots groups from all over the country to unite in the nation's capital.

There will be fund raising and voter registration. This is a high visibility event in Freedom Plaza close to the White House. There will be extensive media coverage as we host Mayors, Climate Change, members of Congress, Sierra Club, Veterans. Bands, performers, grassroots special guests.

French TV has contacted me and they will be filming for a special program about the election and our grassroots movement.

Our stage is being built. I am hoping to find an Obama banner for the stage if you know of any group who has one and can loan it for the event. If you live in the region, come to Washington DC to Freedom Plaza to share our grassroots enthusiasm. If you live across the country, it's a great time to visit your nation's capital and be apart of history.

A word about the ticket. I am so proud to be supporting such talented and inspirational candidates as Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Together they complement the spirit of Hope, Change, and Determination that America represents to the world. I have been fortunate to work with so many people across this country organizing this event. Grassroots have always been the spirit and good intentions of America.

I didn't know anything about organizing an event like this. I just knew I wanted to become involved. I just got onto the site and I began. With a little hard work and love for my country, I found out something about myself, and the other people I encountered.

What is Different and Does It Really Matter? - Intentionality, Honesty, and Coping Resources in Moments of Vulnerability

We can and typically do try to get to know our candidates through the content of what they say. Perhaps unfairly we then accuse them of being crafted and ingenuine, especially at times they become more cautious and measured to avoid our judgments. Each candidates' behavior reflects their choices within the context of this incredibly strenuous and life-changing year. I cannot imagine having so much of myself, my life, my supporters, and the country resting on this relatively short and thoroughly monitored period of time. In addition to monitoring the present, we are also monitoring and revisiting their pasts, not as they necessarily even were but as they were recorded, recalled, and understood out of the limited context of that particular moment.

While this level of monitoring seems unfair in many ways, it does provide a way for us to assess the candidate's ability to tolerate the continuous stress and accountability unique to the role of President. Therefore, I propose that our assessment of a candidate should include observations of the person's intentionality across many situations, and observations of the person's honesty and coping style and resources across moments of vulnerability.

I do not want to suggest that we should catch the candidates in these moments and ridicule their mistakes during these times. This would reflect more poorly on our own values, character, and intentions than the candidate himself or herself. Rather I believe that noticing these qualities and bringing them to the awareness of others is important, and doing so should be done with an intention to inform and educate about the important differences in the candidates rather than out of an intention to disrespectfully devalue or ridicule the candidate. When presented objectively, judgment and criticism can stem from a different tone and intention (expressing information and opinion) than devaluation.

For example, this video provides valuable information through a recording of Cheney speaking in the mid-1990's. It leaves the listener questioning his honesty and intentions over the past 8 years. The information can effectively and respectfully be presented objectively, possibly with some judgment or opinion, while not being devaluing or disrespectful in tone. The intention can be to educate, heighten public awareness, and to convince the public of something rather than primarily to ridicule and devalue out of spite or anger.

The Internet and various video websites are providing a unique opportunity for us to revisit moments in history, and to hear the spoken words of key leaders and candidates. There is a risk of clips being played out of context or altered, but when provided fully and/or accurately the sound-bites can provide the listener direct data to draw conclusions, and even for candidates to respond and clarify. Some recordings are presented in a way to allow for unique opportunities to observe inaccurate statements

While I do believe some inconsistencies in content are understandable and even represent positive qualities of flexibility of thinking and willingness to learn and consider changing contexts, other inconsistencies are less 'forgiving'. This video of McCain is powerful in hearing his inconsistencies, which not only validate our memories and perceptions of his changed evaluation of his political relationship with Bush, but also is timely in allowing us to question McCain's accusations that Barack is flip flopping (which I believe is in the context of these more positive qualities and lack of rigidity as opposed to contradictory statements of facts.) These last two videos call to question McCain's intentions and motivations in his evaluations and assessments, and his recollections of facts and information.

My hope is that we can model Barack's example of providing information, content, comparisons, differences, and even criticism in a manner and tone that is objective, respectful, and not devaluing.

Hollywood-like Celebrity vs. Scholar, Philosopher, Activist and Inspiring Political Leader

Recent comparisons of Senator Obama to Hollywood celebrities very accurately highlight his popularity and the energy surrounding his community of supporters. Interestingly this response may have a generational quality to it. Since the 60’s, we have seen the Baby Boomers and subsequent generations gather in energetic crowds to express their support for various people they admire and support, including musical groups, political and spiritual leaders, and activists – from the Beatles and Elvis, to JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Billy Graham. Unfortunately, while we’ve continued to see crowds gather in admiration of new musical stars, Hollywood stars, and athletes, we’ve rarely seen these crowds gathering in support of new political leaders. Spiritual leaders and politicians have often been mocked and ridiculed for their duplicity, “wordsmithing”, dishonesty, and underlying personal gains at public expense. In the past few years we’ve seen the rise of celebrities and leaders who are admired for more than their being famous. The boundaries between musician, celebrity, social activism, spiritual leadership, and political activism has become blurred as Oprah and other celebrities, sports stars, and musicians address issues of human welfare. They have devoted significant attention and resources to social, environmental, spiritual, and political activism. Spirituality is increasingly seen apart from religious scandals of the past and recognized as an important part of our society and emotional and physical well-being; musicians produce songs highlighting social and political concerns; and our youth begin to show increasing interest and involvement in our world and their future.

Therefore, in comparing Senator Obama to a celebrity I believe there are more accurate analogies than those who have been used, those whose fame is based primarily on musical talents, wealth, or social status. While not complete in themselves, perhaps better analogies would be to Oprah, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Bono, George Clooney, Matt Damon and others who are very talented celebrities who have increasingly turned our attention to social, environmental, and political activism and human welfare through the ways they devote their talents, time, and money to these issues and needs. In addition they are similar to Senator Obama in their sincerity and ways they speak to us at personal and subjective depths.

Similarly, Senator Obama has devoted his intellectual and interpersonal talents to these concerns and needs. This commitment began when he first graduated from college and has continued to the present. His political career and talents are devoted to activism and human welfare. Therefore, other comparisons have already been made to politicians and political leaders throughout history, including a variety of leaders who are admired not only for their fame, charisma, and good looks, but also for their philosophical wisdom, integrity, and devotion to our social, environmental, spiritual, political, and physical welfare. These comparisons have included Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, FD Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, and JF Kennedy.

Therefore, I would clarify that Senator Obama is not just a celebrity; he is a very famous and admired scholar, philosopher, activist, and inspiring political leader who is demonstrating these values and talents even through his campaign. These values and intentions are evident in his speeches. He is not simply saying, “Vote for me” or “This is what I’ll do for you when I’m President”; instead he is using the time with his large and small audiences to effect change now … by increasing awareness of current issues including the problems we’ve wanted to ignore, calling for us to take personal responsibility and action, and pointing out how our ways of thinking and living need to change (away from dichotomies and labels, and toward unity, social commitment, self-reliance and accountability). New Yorker Cover: WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR!!!

I couldn't believe what is on the cover of The New Yorker. I usually look forward to the funny and often deeply satirical cover art, but this one shocked and outraged me.

The cover shows Obama in a turban and traditional Muslim garb and his wife Michelle dressed in fatigues--rocking an afro and combat boots--and packing an assault rifle. They are giving one another a congratulatory "fist-bump." There is a portrait of Osama Bin Laden above the fireplace where the American flag is burning. Oh, and by the way, the room they're standing in... it's the Oval Office!

Now I know that The New Yorker is known for cartoons that people either "get" or "don't get"...

But I have to say, "I don't get it!"

Could someone please explain the joke to me?

The New Yorker described Barry Blitt's work as lampooning of "scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign."

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

"But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree," Burton added.

Cartoonist Barry Blitt defended his work, saying this:

I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic [let alone as terrorists] in certain sectors is preposterous. It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is.

Although this may be the intention, the damaging impact of reinforcing rumors of the "Manchurian Candidate" variety by depicting imagery like this in the American popular media cannot be underestimated.

Throughout America, it is still widely believed that Barack Obama is a Muslim--and many readers may not realize that the cover is meant to be satirical. In its attempt to point out the obvious--that Obama is NOT a terrorist or Muslim or Black Power/"kill whitey" candidate--it may unfortunately have the opposite effect.

I'm not including the cover image here because I don't want to proliferate it unnecessarily, but I would like to encourage you to write a letter to the editor of the New Yorker to express your outrage at this racist, divisive, offensive and generally unfunny cover art.

Getting in General Election Mode

Pony Up. Because He's the Nominee, That's Why.

OK, I know it's been a long time. 2004 seems almost lost in the mists of history. I wasn't posting here then, I wasn't even reading blogs then. Thank God, because what I've read about the Dean/Kerry/Edwards/Clark wars makes me not sorry I missed them.

So did you have a moment here, when you understood what was at stake? When you all agreed that primaries are not like general elections? Because during a primary arguing among ourselves is part of the deal. At that point we have the luxury of asking candidates to compete for our support.

He's the nominee. You don't have to like him. You might have voted for someone else. But if you are here, I am going to assume it is because you want what I want. You want Obama in the White House. You want a frickin' tidal wave of blue washing through the land, picking up lots of new House seats, Senate seats, Governorships, maybe even flipping one or two state legislatures.

You want it? Pony up. You should be holding nothing back.

Because he's the nominee, that's why.

Let's face it, when was the last time we had a chance this good to win the White House? A really, really good chance, if we don't let up, get distracted or get cocky? You want to blow that?

And when was the last time you had a national nominee committing his own election resources to the downticket races this clearly? Who wants to put paid staff in all 50 states? States where he will win but where he can help others? Isn't that enough for you?

And when was the last time we had a chance for a full-on political realignment that could last a generation?

You seriously want to throw that away, because of one vote? Because of something he said? Or didn't say? Because of the ups and downs of a particular week of a campaign news cycle?

If you have money to spare, whether it is $2300 or $23, I cannot imagine what you are still waiting for.

If you have time to give, whether it is the next four months of your life or four hours on a phonebank between now and November, why would you hold back?

You think I'm picking up your slack? No way. I'm already maxed out in almost every way you can envision.

Oh, I see. You are making a point. Yes, well, good for you. But I don't have that luxury. I'm making a future for myself, for my two kids, for my community and my planet.

And the only thing worse than sitting this one out, is to say you are sitting it out, in the most public way possible, to maximize the effect on others to hold back -- when you have every intention of giving your money and time at some unnamed time in the future.

But hey, you made your point.

Here's mine. The primary is over. This is the general election. This is when we are supposed to be about electing Democrats. We have a truly great one at the top of the ticket. He's not perfect. Nor is he a sellout doing anything to win. You know that, you're smart enough to know that.

Oh, and just so you know. I'm not starry-eyed at all. I see clear as day. I'm ruthless, actually. I want to win. And I want to win big enough that we can claim that progressive mandate. Obama may win without you. But the bigger the win, the more likely it is he can push the kind of changes we need. The more House and Senate seats we pick up on his coattails, the stronger the legislative coalition he has to work with. In fact, donating to Obama also supports downticket races. He is paying staff in states that he may not win where there are other critical seats in play. We're a team, now. Team blue. And I'm a team player.

Say what you want. Do what you want. It's a free country. But your choices aren't free. They come with a cost. I'm with Mike Lux on this one:

I will admit right now that this is a place where the old-school politico in me takes over: I see no choice other than to be totally, thoroughly in the tank for the Democratic Presidential nominee in the five months before the election. I'm happy to join with Matt and Chris and the progressive netroots on many things- progressive primary challenges like Lamont and Donna Edwards; exposing the Bush Dogs; taking on Democrats when they screw up on issues in general; hammering away at Dems to do the right thing when tough votes come down. All of those tactics are ones I'm down for. But in the last five months of a Presidential general, I get totally focused on one thing: winning the damn election. The stakes are simply too high. Winning the election won't solve all our problems, or give us a suddenly progressive America, but it at least gives us a chance to make progress. If I have to swallow my anger on an issue I care about, well, to be blunt, I'm down for that, too.

Time to pony up. He's the nominee, that's why.

I ordered some stuff to have by July 4th to give out at the Liberty Day Celebration and I did it on Saturday, I even paid to have it rushed so I would make sure I had the stickers but 2 business days later it is still being "processed"???? What is the hold up, I mean they are just stickers, not on back order or anything! I sure hope I have them by Thursday! It's just kinda frustrating and I was wondering if anyone else had placed an order for stickers and it took a long time....like why do they even offer priority shipping if it is still gonna take over a week! I guess I should be glad there is such a high demand for this stuff huh! Oh well, just wanted to see if anyone else has had any issues with ordering...

I recently attended a music and arts festival in Tennessee called Bonnaroo. Maybe some of you have heard of it. In any case, there was a strong Obama presence there, so I thought I'd share a few images.

If you look at the truck in the background, someone took the Bonnaroo font type and changed it up to say 'Obamaroo'.

I met this very nice lady while photographing a piece of artwork at the festival. I used her daughter as a model. She was so adorable!

At Bonnaroo, the rows and rows of tents and RV's tend to all look the same, so a visual aid is often needed, or else you'll end up wandering around for hours trying to find your campsite! A friend of mine thought that an Obama flag would be the perfect visual aid, so the nite before we left, I headed over to Jo-Ann's Fabrics and picked up some supplies. Unfortunately, there were very heavy winds, so the flag began to fray (as you can see from the photo) and it didn't make it home. :( But you can at least see a video of it flying proudly here. :)

I love to read op-ed's, especially on Sundays. They are so interesting and inciteful. I can't imagine even 10 years ago before newspapers and columns were posted online. What could you do if you wanted to read the New Yorker, Washington Post, The Nation, The New York Post, The LA Times, and The New York Times in the same day? You couldn't, damnit. Why can Obama win the religious vote? If they're smart like this guy:

"I'm an orthodox Christian, and I am definitely drawn to Obama," says Patton Dodd, a 33-year-old editor at beliefnet.com. Dodd adds that many of his peers like Obama too: "Last week I had lunch with the publisher of the nation's main evangelical youth publishing company and the director of a big relief organization," he says. Good luck against Senator McCain. We may have to prepare for an Obama/Clinton ticket

Recent events make that idea seem remote , and many of us have a harsh view of Hillary's remarks , however for the good of the party and country we may have to work for that ticket . There are some good points to mention that Hillary and Bill have " enabled " Barack to conduct a better national campaign against McCain . Who better to convince voters that Barack is qualified than his most vocal opponent . Who really does connect with Appalachian voters , with older women ? Bill would be a powerful assistant in our campaign . We may have to forget transgressions by the Clintons , and swallow some pride . But we won the nomination . And if we want to win the presidency , unite the party , unite the country , change the world.............we must accept Barack's decision and support the ticket . Would his choice be consistant with the campaign and what he has said in the past ? Regular politics of old would dictate that Hillary has no chance as VP . The politics of change would be forgiving our opponent and embracing the future . If we can not find a way to work with everyone in our party , how can we expect cross party cooperation ? How could we expect to face and solve world problems ? After one year of this campaign I would rather have Hillary Clinton fighting with me rather than against me .

I do believe that it is time for the Democratic Party to commence the healing process but I have to disagree with the article's suggestion of chanting Obama is the nominee because he is not.

We did win a "battle" yesterday in reaching a majority of pledged delegates but Obama is not the nominee until the DNC signs and confirms that Obama is the nominee. Frankly even if we get the superdelegate support between now and soon after June 3rd a signed confirmation won't happen until the convention.

So, in the spirit of the book The Secret, yes put up that sign or picture in your house that says Obama Presidente 2008! but don't forget to keep "fighting" to assure that your vision comes to pass because people in power don't like to give up their power...but nothing can stand in the way of millions of people calling for change.

I have heard just about enough of talking heads commenting on Sen. Obama and Rev. Wright. He should have not waited so long. He should not have stayed in the church for twenty years. Why now has Rev. Wright said anything different that would make him change his mind? My favorite is how it is just a political calculation. The decision he made was his own. Only he knows the reason. I am a converted Catholic. I think being a Catholic sometimes frankly saves my life when things get tough. We all know about the abuse of innocent children. This is enough of a reason for me to renounce my faith, but I won’t I think the good the Church does for me far outweighs the bad it has done to others. All this time has been spent on one pastor and his one parishioner. But what about Sen. McCain he has done something far worse. Sen. McCain just for the sake of political points has sought the endorsement of Rev. Hagee. BuffalObama, a local group in Buffalo, NY working to elect Senator Barack Obama to the Presidency of the United States, is issuing a challenge to all other local groups across the nation to join us in organizing a fundraising event and voter registration drive in your community. Please join with us for "Bowling for Barack".

Our event will seek to raise funds for our delegates to the national convention, as well as drive new voter registration.

There will be prizes awarded for highest game bowled, most voter registration forms brought in, and the bowler whose score comes closest to equaling the 37 Barack bowled while on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania. In addition, we have purchased a life-sized cutout of Barack, so he will be able to join in our fun! The pictures should be a riot!

We're holding our event in conjunction with watching the Indiana/N.Carolina primary returns.

To help raise additional monies, we will ask people to sponsor us by pledging an amount per pin knocked down, or a flat amount per game.

Confirming that Western New York is indeed the Bowling Capital of the World (or at least was at one point), BuffalObama has issued this nationwide challenge to all other local Obama campaign groups to host their own "Bowling for Barack" event. Our shared goal of registering thousands of new voters will help bring the change to Washington DC we can all believe in and benefit from.

Friends,

I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours -- on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?

I haven't spoken publicly 'til now as to who I would vote for, primarily for two reasons: 1) Who cares?; and 2) I (and most people I know) don't give a rat's ass whose name is on the ballot in November, as long as there's a picture of JFK and FDR riding a donkey at the top of the ballot, and the word "Democratic" next to the candidate's name.

Seriously, I know so many people who don't care if the name under the Big "D" is Dancer, Prancer, Clinton or Blitzen. It can be Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Barry Obama or the Dalai Lama.

Well, that sounded good last year, but over the past two months, the actions and words of Hillary Clinton have gone from being merely disappointing to downright disgusting. I guess the debate last week was the final straw. I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white people, pure and simple. Of course, Obama has no connection to Farrakhan. But, according to Senator Clinton, Obama's pastor does -- AND the "church bulletin" once included a Los Angeles Times op-ed from some guy with Hamas! No, not the church bulletin!

This sleazy attempt to smear Obama was brilliantly explained the following night by Stephen Colbert. He pointed out that if Obama is supported by Ted Kennedy, who is Catholic, and the Catholic Church is led by a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth, that can mean only one thing: OBAMA LOVES HITLER!

Yes, Senator Clinton, that's how you sounded. Like you were nuts. Like you were a bigot stoking the fires of stupidity. How sad that I would ever have to write those words about you. You have devoted your life to good causes and good deeds. And now to throw it all away for an office you can't win unless you smear the black man so much that the superdelegates cry "Uncle (Tom)" and give it all to you.

But that can't happen. You cast your die when you voted to start this bloody war. When you did that you were like Moses who lost it for a moment and, because of that, was prohibited from entering the Promised Land.

How sad for a country that wanted to see the first woman elected to the White House. That day will come -- but it won't be you. We'll have to wait for the current Democratic governor of Kansas to run in 2016 (you read it here first!).

There are those who say Obama isn't ready, or he's voted wrong on this or that. But that's looking at the trees and not the forest. What we are witnessing is not just a candidate but a profound, massive public movement for change. My endorsement is more for Obama The Movement than it is for Obama the candidate.

That is not to take anything away from this exceptional man. But what's going on is bigger than him at this point, and that's a good thing for the country. Because, when he wins in November, that Obama Movement is going to have to stay alert and active. Corporate America is not going to give up their hold on our government just because we say so. President Obama is going to need a nation of millions to stand behind him.

I know some of you will say, 'Mike, what have the Democrats done to deserve our vote?' That's a damn good question. In November of '06, the country loudly sent a message that we wanted the war to end. Yet the Democrats have done nothing. So why should we be so eager to line up happily behind them?

I'll tell you why. Because I can't stand one more friggin' minute of this administration and the permanent, irreversible damage it has done to our people and to this world. I'm almost at the point where I don't care if the Democrats don't have a backbone or a kneebone or a thought in their dizzy little heads. Just as long as their name ain't "Bush" and the word "Republican" is not beside theirs on the ballot, then that's good enough for me.

I, like the majority of Americans, have been pummeled senseless for 8 long years. That's why I will join millions of citizens and stagger into the voting booth come November, like a boxer in the 12th round, all bloodied and bruised with one eye swollen shut, looking for the only thing that matters -- that big "D" on the ballot.

Don't get me wrong. I lost my rose-colored glasses a long time ago.

It's foolish to see the Democrats as anything but a nicer version of a party that exists to do the bidding of the corporate elite in this country. Any endorsement of a Democrat must be done with this acknowledgement and a hope that one day we will have a party that'll represent the people first, and laws that allow that party an equal voice.

Finally, I want to say a word about the basic decency I have seen in Mr. Obama. Mrs. Clinton continues to throw the Rev. Wright up in his face as part of her mission to keep stoking the fears of White America. Every time she does this I shout at the TV, "Say it, Obama! Say that when she and her husband were having marital difficulties regarding Monica Lewinsky, who did she and Bill bring to the White House for 'spiritual counseling?' THE REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT!"

But no, Obama won't throw that at her. It wouldn't be right. It wouldn't be decent. She's been through enough hurt. And so he remains silent and takes the mud she throws in his face.

That's why the crowds who come to see him are so large. That's why he'll take us down a more decent path. That's why I would vote for him if Michigan were allowed to have an election.

But the question I keep hearing is... 'can he win? Can he win in November?' In the distance we hear the siren of the death train called the Straight Talk Express. We know it's possible to hear the words "President McCain" on January 20th. We know there are still many Americans who will never vote for a black man. Hillary knows it, too. She's counting on it.

Pennsylvania, the state that gave birth to this great country, has a chance to set things right. It has not had a moment to shine like this since 1787 when our Constitution was written there. In that Constitution, they wrote that a black man or woman was only "three fifths" human. On Tuesday, the good people of Pennsylvania have a chance for redemption.

May we set an example for the world over that if we can get together to smoke in peace, that we may also get together and work in peace, worship in peace, heal each other and live as God and/or nature intended. Benjamin Franklin once said that he never met a green, sticky bud that he didn't like. Ed Rendell has been a force in PA politics for over 3 decades now. He is someone who is far more familiar with how systems and elections are processed in this state then our campaign and campaign lawyers.

If we are serious about winning PA we need to be aware that highly unethical and illegal tactics will be employed in trying to secure HRC a 4-9% win here in PA and Ed Rendell a shot at the VP.

We need to alert all agencies and departments that could potentially influence PAs primary, that they are being documented and watched extraordinarily closely.

Unfortunately workers in these offices and departments are extremely loyal to Rendell and his cause, being that they are employed by his Gov't.

We need to be beyond vigilant in terms of insuring a fair and equitable election in PA. It's NOT going to simply happen that way. PA was recently ranked 3rd most susceptible to election tampering (blackboxvoting.org).

Ed Rendell has the potential to be the Katherine Harris of PA. Let’s do what we can to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Email Ed Rendell and demand a transparent process here in PA. Let him and all of his Gov't we, the people are watching very close.

Attention Obama community,

After 2 weeks of consistant canvassing, I am pleased to report we are making signifigant inroads against the Clinton Machine here. A substantial block of voters have moved from favoring Clinton to undecided, many leaning Obama or strong Obama backers after I speak with them.

I have found a highly effective tactic for communicating with the undecided demographic. Here it is, both candidates are very similar on the issues. There is however one issue where there is clear seperation, ethics and transparency. Now more then ever we need a role model for America, someone who young people can look up to and respect. Hillary Clinton simply is not that person. Take the past couple of weeks as a microcosm of her charactor, Bosnia, etc. HRC, American children all over the Country want to know the difference between misspeaking, and flatly lying.

If we make ethics and transparency the focal point of the campaign down the homestreth I believe we can win the state outright, that's a fact.

I sincerely hope this message gets conveyed to the proper channels. Thanks!

Robert Johnson and the rest of Hillary Clinton’s super-donators want to withhold money from the DCCC if the Speaker doesn’t put an end to her position that the super-delegates should vote their consciences. Well that’s fine with me but her surrogates aren’t the only ones who can donate money. A lot of Obama supporters are repeatedly donating small amounts of money to his campaign. We should do the same for the DCCC. Then it isn’t just fat-cats putting their mouths where there money is. The little people also matter.
