OFA Listening tour wrap up

OFA December 2009 - The final Listening Tour was held in Bethany Beach in Sussex County on December 3rd. We had five stops in total including; Bethany Beach, Newark, UD, Dover, and Wilmington. Folks from all walks of life engaged in the listening tours. They were seniors, college students, professionals, union members and community activists. One thing that we all had in common is the shared belief in strong communities. OFA is a great way to build community from the neighborhood level. We can start building our neighborhood teams one by one through sharing our story and connecting it to the issues like health care. With these relationships we can work together as a team to help move from issues to solutions.
OFA is extending its capacity to almost all 50 states. The listening tours were designed as a way to convene the volunteers and find out what they need and how OFA can work with them to support the Presidents agenda. As an organization we have received a wealth of information about the volunteer base through input received during the tours. In Delaware it was no different; the volunteers who participated provided information about their communities, their strengths, their interests and their hopes for the President. Delaware OFA supporters came to the tour for a variety of reasons. At the Dover meeting there was a group of volunteers who had worked together on the 2008 election and they wanted to find out more about the new OFA. In Newark Republicans spoke about how their party no longer represented who they are as people. When we met with University of Delaware Democrats the students, a mom with young twins and another volunteer, a UN Children’s advocate from Wilmington joined them. The Wilmington meeting was full of energy with teachers, professionals and two super community organizers looking for a way to inspire their community. At our final stop we had retirees, local restaurant staff, a professional mom and her son who really wanted to find out more about OFA, and a retired nurse who wants to see our President succeed. Health Insurance reform and the Health care legislation was one topic everyone was interested in. There were many questions about the process, and what the final product might achieve. There was a great overall support for what the President is doing to bring about reform and a sense of hope about how Americans will benefit. We discussed as a group what OFA is doing to move health care forward, discussing the four pillars; organization building, citizen contact, member of congress outreach, and positive earned media. Volunteers were energized about talking to one another and communicating the real story of health care reform not a distorted media view. They are looking for a way to share their interest in health insurance reform and building a community of support for the President and one another.
Thanks to all who came out to the listening tour meetings. Regional groups are convening monthly for ongoing neighborhood team building. Rapid response meetings will be held as the Senate vote approaches, probably this week or next. Volunteers who attended the tour will be invited to all events around the state and OFA has already held two general volunteer trainings on Dec 5th in Dover, and Dec.12th in Wilmington. Additional trainings will be scheduled in January and February. Look for events on the Delaware.BarackObama.com website and Organizing for America Delaware Facebook page, See you soon.

The Next Step: Attend a Change is Coming House Meeting Dec. 13-14

Today David Plouffe sent out the following message to supporters, inviting them to attend one the many grassroots house meetings taking place throughout the country later this month:

Exactly one month ago, you made history by giving all Americans a real opportunity for change.

Now it's time to start preparing and working for change in our communities.

On December 13th and 14th, supporters are coming together in every part of the country to reflect on what we've accomplished and plan the future of this movement. Your ideas and feedback will be collected and used to guide this movement in the months and years ahead.

Join your friends and neighbors -- sign up to host or attend a Change is Coming house meeting near you.

Since the election, the challenges we face -- and our responsibility to take action -- have only gotten more urgent.

You can connect with fellow supporters, make progress on the issues you care about, and help shape the future of your community and our country.

Learn what you can do now to support President-elect Obama's agenda for change and continue to make a difference in your community.

Take the first important step by hosting or attending a Change is Coming house meeting. Sign up right now.

To get our country back on track, it will take all of us working together.

Barack and Joe have a clear agenda and an unprecedented opportunity for change. But they can't do it alone.

Will you join us at a house meeting and help plan the next steps for this movement?

Thanks,

David

David Plouffe
Campaign Manager
Obama for America

GOTV Calling Update

Right now, while volunteers work to Get Out The Vote in key states, thousands of grassroots supporters across the country are helping out from home by using our online voter contact tools to call voters.

Our target today is to make 1,000,000 calls to voters in battleground states before the close of polls tonight. As of 1:00 PM Eastern, we've made 214,187 calls. However, our staff on the ground are telling us that we need to reach the 500,000 call mark by 3:00 PM Eastern Time.

These calls provide our supporters with information about when, where and how to vote today, and by helping identify which voters have already cast a ballot, we can dramatically reduce the number of houses our volunteers on the ground need to reach before polls close.

If you have even thirty minutes to spare in the next three hours, when can use your help. Simply select the state you want to call from the map below, and we'll provide you with an easy to use script and a targeted list of voters to call.

The largest voter contact operation ever attempted is underway right now. This is your chance to be part of it.

Delaware: Polls Open 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM

In Delaware, polls are open today from 7:00 AM until 8:00 PM local time. Anyone who is in line by 8:00 PM will be allowed to vote. You can find your polling location now.

For additional information or for any issues you may have with voting visit our Voter Information Center or call 1-877-US-4-OBAMA (877-874-6226). Answers to some of the most common voting questions are below:

Do I need to bring ID with me when I go vote?

Identification is required if you registered using the National Voter Registration Form and thus did not supply it originally. ID is also required the first time you vote in person or with an in-person absentee ballot. In these cases, the voter must present current identification which includes a current and valid photo ID that shows full name and address.
If a photo ID cannot be produced, a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows full name and address will be accepted.

What time will the polls be open on November 4?

Delaware polls are open from 7 AM - 8 PM.

What about voters with disabilities?

The State of Delaware provides handicapped accessible polling places and voting machines. Voters with special needs can inform the Election Officers at the polls, who are ready to provide assistance upon the voter’s arrival. Voters with special needs may also bring someone with them to help in the voting process. Voters who believe that their polling place is not accessible to them should contact the Department of Elections for their county before the day of the election to make other arrangements to vote. For voters who are deaf or hard of hearing, all election materials, announcements and forms are available on this website. You may also use the State’s free TDD relay service to obtain election and voting information. Simply dial 711 and give the operator the toll free help line number for the county from which you are calling: New Castle County 577-3000; Kent County 800-464-4357; Sussex County 800-464-4357; and outside Delaware 800-273-9500.

GOTV: Phonebanking in Delaware

All across the country, volunteers have been gathering in local Obama field offices, Union halls, and private homes to make calls to voters in battleground states since Saturday morning. These phonebanks have been brimming with enthusiasm, as people pull together to make thousands and thousands of calls through their collective dedication.

At the CWA Hall in Christiana, Delaware, more than 150 volunteers have shown up over the course of the day, and when we last checked in they'd already made over 20,000 calls over the course of three shifts. At this moment, they are still going strong, making calls into Colorado until 11pm EST.

To keep everyone motivated, the volunteer staff has been holding pep rallies every few hours, allowing everyone to stretch out with a hearty chant of, "Fired up! Ready to go!" Tomorrow, they'll be back on the phones doing it all over again.

No matter where you are, you can find a phonebank near you tomorrow or on Election Day.
Delaware Call Team: We need 4,000 more calls

On Wednesday, the Delaware Call Team reached their call goal by making over 2,300 calls in seven days. This is a great achievement, but we have a lot of work left to do as we had into the most important weekend of the election.

From now until Election Day, we are asking Delaware to make at least 4,000 more calls to help Get Out the Vote in battleground states. This means that we need everyone to step up and try to make more phone calls than ever before during these last five days.

In a recent conference call, Pennsylvania's Field Director, Paulette Aniskoff, talked about why your calls are so critical as we try to bring this election home for Barack. You can listen to this highlight below.

Delaware: Get Out The Vote in Pennsylvania

Earlier this month, almost 200 volunteers showed up for a Get Out The Vote organizational meeting at Obama-Biden Headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. Guest speakers included Sam Lathem, President of Delaware AFL-CIO, and Missy Owens, Joe Biden's niece and campaign manager for his Senate campaign. With standing room only, these folks were fired up and ready to go.

The entire meeting was devoted to laying out the plan for how Delaware will help the key battleground state of Pennsylvania with their Get Out The Vote strategy. Delware has been asked to supply 1,500 volunteers for the last weekend before Election Day, which means that Delaware can make a huge difference in this critical state. So, if you're not signed up yet, call the Wilmington HQ at 302-428-1615. We need everyone to play their part in this historic movement for change.

Janet, one of the volunteers in attendance, was thrilled to see how this campaign has grown over the past two years.

It was very exciting. I have been involved in the campaign since the earliest days of getting Obama's name on the primary ballot in Delaware, working on the petition signing drive. I remember the first meeting when we had 25 people at most. And, to now go to this meeting with more than 200 people all fired up, it was just great to see.

As Janet explained, a field organizer from Pennsylvania spoke about the importance of Delaware's activity between now and November 4th.

The strategy is to send Delaware volunteers to Pennsylvania, and he talked about how to get involved, knocking on doors, making calls. And, he talked about how that even though the polls are showing us up, we can't stop now. It's time to keep going. This is too important.

If you can give even a day for Barack in Pennsylvania, call the Wilmington HQ at 302-428-1615. Delware has set a goal of sending at least 1,500 volunteers to this crucial state, and with you help, we can make sure we don't wake up after Election Day wishing we had done more.

Tonight: Last Call for Change

If you live in a non-battleground state you can play an important role in deciding this election in key battleground states. Especially tonight.

The campaign will be airing a 30-minute special tonight called Barack Obama: American Promises from 8-8:30pm EDT.

Tonight supporters are gathering at Last Call for Change phonebanks across the country, calling voters in swing states to tell them where their polling location is.

There are only 6 days left to bring the change we need.

Barack is counting on your incredibly important phone calls. You can make sure Obama supporters know where to vote on Tuesday. Their polling location may have changed, or they may have never voted before.

No experience is required. You'll have a script to work from, and our staff will help you every step of the way.
Get together with fellow supporters in your community and attend a Last Call for Change phonebank near you tonight.

Delaware Call Challenge Update: 1,300 Calls to Go

On Wednesday, we challenged the Delaware Call Team to make 2,000 calls in seven days to help get out the vote in Pennsylvania. Your calls allow in-state staff and volunteers to focus on face-to-face, door-to-door voter contact.

So far, Delaware has made almost 700 calls in just two days. This is a great start, but we can't afford to let up now. As we head into the final week of this historic election, it's time to work together and push each other across the finish line at full speed.

On Thursday night, Montana's Field Director Carrie Glenn gave an inspiring call to action for all the callers out there using Neighbor to Neighbor to make phone calls from home, or for anyone still hesitating to pick up the phone.

You can listen to it below:

If you haven't done calls before, I'm gonna ask you to pick up the phone and make a couple more than you really think you have time to do. 'Cause no one's ever woken up on November 5th and said, 'I wish I'd done less.' We've got less than two weeks right now to actually make this happen and it's got to be a little bit more than you think you can do. If you've been doing a hundred calls a week, that's incredible, thank you so much for that. We need you to do 200. If you've never made a phone call before, we need you to make 100...

Almost two years of work comes down to these last two weeks, but we know what we need to do to win.

Delaware Call Team: Pennsylvania Needs Your Help

With less than two weeks left in this election, one of the best ways supporters in Delaware can help is to make calls into the key battleground state of Pennsylvania.

These calls provide essential support for field organizers on the ground, as they go door to door to Get Out The Vote.

In yesterday's Get Out The Vote strategy call with the Delaware Call Team, Pennsylvania's Field Director, Paulette Aniskoff, talked about the ground operation in Pennsylvania and explained why your calls are so essential for this campaign. Also, veteran caller Sue Shimer offered some helpful advice on making calls using the Neighbor to Neighbor tool.

The Delaware Call Team has set a goal to make at least 2,000 calls in the next seven days. This means we need everyone to step up their efforts and make a commitment to reaching out to as many voters as possible.

We'll be updating you on our progress here on the Delaware blog throughout the week. By working together, you can make a huge impact in Pennsylvania and bring Barack that much closer to victory on November 4th.

Drive for Change: Joanne in Delaware

With only two weeks until Election Day, we need everyone to work harder than ever before and give everything they can during this final stretch. We can't take anything for granted if we want to bring the change we need this November.

Some dedicated supporters in Delaware are keeping up the fight with Drive for Change canvassing trips to Pennsylvania, a key battleground state which the McCain campaign continues to target.

Joanne from Wilmington recently traveled to Media, Pennsylvania along with her husband to help knock on doors for Barack.

I thought it was really important that we do everything we can. So my husband and I signed up online for a trip to Pennsylvania. Then we recruited about four of our friends and neighbors to come along. We also went to the riverfront office in Wilmington to pick up people who needed rides.

Although Joanne admitted that it can be intimidating at first, she was glad to discover all the great support and encouragement that the canvassers receive.

Anyone can do this, even if you're not a professional. I was a little anxious about it at first, but you just have to jump in. The support that the campaign office gives you is great. It makes you feel very comfortable.

Joanna shared a story that reveals the great diversity of volunteers working together to spread Barack Obama's message of change:

A young woman joined our team on Saturday, who was introduced as a student. At the end of the day, we had a chance to really talk with her, and it turned out she was a high school student. She was only 15 years old.
Neighbor to Neighbor: Reach Out and Make a Difference

In this election, simple voter to voter contact will make the biggest difference in helping elect the next president.

The most effective way to spread Barack's message of change is through ordinary people reaching out to their neighbors and talking one on one about the issues we face in America. Our Neighbor to Neighbor tool makes it easy to get in touch with voters in crucial battleground states:

No matter where you live, you can make a huge impact in this election.
Final Debate Watch Parties

Jon Carson, the National Field Director, is urging supporters across the country to get together for the final presidential debate this Wednesday. Sign up today to host a Debate Watch Party - or attend one near you.

The final presidential debate is this Wednesday, October 15th, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

It's the last chance for undecided voters to see Barack and John McCain side-by-side and determine who will bring the change this country needs.

And it will be the final time before election night to come together in this way with your friends, family, and fellow supporters.

Make the most of this opportunity by signing up to host a Debate Watch Party -- or attend one near you.

If you've joined us for an event before, you know how powerful they can be to help build support and grow our movement. If you haven't, it's a terrific way to connect with fellow supporters and folks who may just be making up their minds.

If you can host an event, we'll make sure you have everything you need to make it a success. We're having a special conference call for Debate Watch Party hosts on Tuesday, when we'll give you ideas for how to get your guests involved in the rest of the campaign.

In these final weeks, each of us needs to do whatever we can to keep strengthening this campaign and encourage undecided voters to cast their votes for change.

Sign up to host or attend a Debate Watch Party now:

http://my.barackobama.com/debate-watch-party

Thanks,

Jon

Jon Carson
National Field Director
Obama for America

Last Call for Change

Earlier today National Field Director Jon Carson sent our this important email to supporters in Delware:

This weekend, Obama supporters in your community are coming together to call voters in key battleground states.

People are already casting early ballots in a number of states, which is why they need to hear from you now.

You can make a big difference in states where the race is neck-and-neck by sharing crucial information about early and absentee voting.

Sign up to join a Last Call for Change event near you.

With just 25 days left before the election, time is running out to make direct personal contact with potential supporters.

And there is no more powerful way to sway an undecided voter than a one-on-one conversation with a supporter like you. That's why we're organizing Last Call for Change events all over the country this weekend.

As the McCain campaign tries to smear Barack's character and distract voters from the issues that matter, your phone calls are more important than ever.

No experience is required, but please bring your cell phone. Staff will give you everything else you need to succeed.

Attend a Last Call for Change event near you.

And please tell your friends about the Last Call for Change event this weekend. Bring them along. The more voters we reach, the better our chances on November 4th.

Thanks,

Jon

Jon Carson
National Field Director
Obama for America

On Sunday, almost 80 people attended a day long Camp Obama training session at the Wilmington HQ in Delaware. All are now Deputy Field Organizers and are ready to be deployed to battleground states as early as this weekend.

Chris Coons, the New Castle County Executive, ran the training session along with Aadil Ginwala, Delaware State Field Director, and Erik Kollig, Field Director for the Biden Senate Campaign.

Renita, one of the Camp Obama trainees, was already an active volunteer in the Wilmington office, but she was looking to do even more for this historic campaign.

I currently run the phone bank, train new volunteers, and make sure people are comfortable. But I decided that maybe there was more I could do. Right now, I'm unemployed, and I represent a lot of things that Obama talks about when he is out on the stump. I need to do what I can, because the situation has got to get better.

Hoping to learn the necessary skills for field organizing, Renita was very pleased with Camp Obama.

It was a nice training. The pace was really good, and it used a lot of good concepts. There were opportunities for small groups and a good discussion from people with all their different stories. It had all of the elements needed for a good training. The people were very passionate about what they were doing.

Due to her job situation, along with a grandson to look after, Renita still has to see if she can travel to another state. But, no mater what, Renita is giving everything she can to help elect Barack the next President.

I'm willing to do whatever I can... Eveyone needs to give something, even an hour, even 10 dollars. People ask me how I can afford to contribute. I say, how can I afford not to? ...Some people don't understand the urgency of now. We really need to move forward. We have to be active. There is a role for everybody in this campaign.

Contact the Delaware State Headquarters to see what role you can play in this campaign for change.

You can also sign up for a Drive for Change canvassing trip to Pennsylvania, or start making calls to voters using our Neighbor to Neighbor phonebanking tool.

The Debate and What's Next

There was news this morning that tonight's presidential debate will proceed as planned, with both candidates in attendance. Last night, National Field Director Jon Carson sent out a message inviting supporters to attend debate parties, and explaining what comes next for the campaign . . .

The election is less than 40 days away, and the American people deserve to hear directly from the candidates about how they intend to lead our country.

You're invited to join a Debate Watch Party in your community and discuss the issues that are most important to you and your family, friends, and neighbors.

Find a Debate Watch Party in your area and RSVP today.

These parties will allow you to to get to know folks in your community, and continue building this campaign from the bottom up by reaching out to even more supporters using our Neighbor to Neighbor tool.

If you can't attend a party, you can still use our Neighbor to Neighbor tool to reach out to swing voters in a crucial battleground state who need to hear from you.

It's an extremely powerful way to build support for Barack.

Whether you can attend a Debate Watch Party or not, it's a great way to connect with fellow voters.

Get your list of potential supporters right now and start making phone calls today.

Neighbor to Neighbor gives you everything you need to get started.

As Barack prepares for the presidential debate, we'll be preparing, too -- by laying the groundwork for victory on Election Day.

Let's get to work.

Thanks,

Jon

Jon Carson
National Field Director
Obama for America

Phonebanking in Delaware with Kathleen Biden

On Saturday, as part of the Women's Week of Action, Kathleen Biden joined about 75 volunteers at the Delaware for Obama headquarters to make calls to Pennsylvania voters. Married to Hunter Biden, Joe Biden's youngest son, Kathleen spoke to the volunteers in the morning before getting to work on the phone. She also gave a send-off to volunteers making a Drive for Change canvassing trip to Pennsylvania.

Her visit was covered today by the Delaware newspaper, The News Journal:

Kathleen Biden told volunteers Saturday how excited the family was when Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama tapped her father-in-law to be his vice presidential running mate.

...Kathleen Biden's comments came at the Delaware for Obama Headquarters at the Wilmington Riverfront, where she exhorted volunteers to get the vote out.

"We are all out there working together to make sure we win," she told about 75 mostly women volunteers. "Thanks again for coming out here. And tell your friends and tell your family."

With those words -- and after an in-unison shout of "yes we can" -- many of the campaign workers headed out to knock on doors in nearby Pennsylvania communities. Many of the volunteers brought their daughters along, because the rally was touted as "Take Your Daughter to Canvass Day," a national initiative.

...Biden planned to work the phones with other volunteers who stayed behind at the party headquarters, where a goal had been set to make 1,500 calls.

"The thing we're trying to make sure people are doing is they're registering and they're voting," she said.

A homemaker, Kathleen Biden has been married to Hunter for 15 years. Originally from Chicago, she met Hunter when they were working for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, a program that helps the homeless, unemployed, abused and mentally or physically ill.

...Following Kathleen Biden's brief speech, Delaware for Obama State Director Marla Blunt-Carter said about 20 carloads of volunteers headed off to Media and West Chester campaign offices to join workers there for door-to-door canvassing.

"Next week will be Camp Obama, where we send people out to battleground states to live," she said. "We're training them. We're giving them all the resources. And we're asking them to commit to be deputy field organizers in other states."

You can sign up today for a Drive for Change canvassing trip to knock on doors in Pennsylvania, or set up an account on our new Neighbor to Neighbor online tool to make calls from home.

Phone Call by Phone Call

One of the newest features of our Neighbor to Neighbor voter contact system is the online phonebanking tool. During the primary, thousands of supporters used our old online calling system to make literally millions of phone calls that made the difference in hard fought primaries across the country. In November, these phone calls will once again be a key part of our strategy.

Here is a quick tour of the new phonebanking tool:

The phonebanking tool provides you with lists of targeted voters in your community, a brief calling script, and an easy interface to enter your results. You can print off call lists and make calls offline, or you can make calls while at your computer.

When you’re done calling, report your results back to the campaign so we can update the system and let our staff and volunteers on the ground know where are supporters are and who needs more information.

In the coming days, we'll be adding more features and more calling campaigns that will allow you to make calls to key battleground states. In some areas, you'll be able to make peer to peer phone calls to talk to students, veterans, women, Latinos, and other important groups. If you're interested in making peer to peer calls, visit our People page and sign up for the constituency groups and demographics that apply to you.

No matter who you are or where you live, if you can make time during the coming weeks to help reach out to other voters, sign up now.

When campaign manager David Plouffe talked about a "persuasion army" he meant nothing more, and nothing less, than millions of volunteers doing their part talking to friends, family, and neighbors one person at a time.

"Now it's our turn."

From the earliest days of the campaign, Barack has closed his speeches not just with an ask for a vote, but with a call to action. From the beginning, this campaign has been built on the belief that ordinary people can make a difference in their lives and in their nation's government, but only if they act.

In his closing remarks in Daytona Beach this morning, Barack made this case as clear as ever:

I hope you'll join me. I hope you'll walk with me, so that we can turn the page on the failed policies of the past. And if you make that commitment, if everybody out here is getting registered, if everybody is out there volunteering, if all of you are doing a little community organizing, if you're making phone calls, sending out emails, knocking on doors, talking to folks at church, if you've decided that you want to roll up your sleeves and join with me and change this country, block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, county by county, state by state, then I promise you this -- we will not just win Florida. We will win this general election, and then you and I together are going to change this country and change the world.

In his speech in Wooster, Ohio last Wednesday, Joe Biden referred to this moment as an "inflection point" on the issues of war, global warming, the economy and more.

But it is more than just that. This moment is a leverage point, in which the work you do over the next 45 days will have a greater impact than at perhaps any other point in your life.

Right now, this race is neck-and-neck. In over a dozens states, the margin between winning and losing -- the margin between a government that institutionalizes the policies and mistakes of the last eight years and an administration that brings real change to Washington -- will be the work done on the ground by ordinary people.

Over the course of the evening, we'll be showing you a number of ways in which you can get involved, no matter where you live or what your past political experience is.

This first step is simple:

Marijo's Drive for Change to Pennsylvania

Marijo had been ambivalent about door to door canvassing, working primarily in her local campaign office as an active volunteer since January. But with less than 50 days until Election Day, she felt it was time to hit the streets, making the trip from Delaware to the battleground state of Pennsylvania as part of our Drive for Change campaign.

As I continued my informal canvassing with bumper stickers, buttons, a car flag, and now an Obama license plate, the “imperative” has now taken over and I will do whatever it takes to help others make this important choice in November. I also have to give credit to Rob, our grassroots leader in Delaware, who has been a gentle but direct leader to all of us. He nudged me in that direction by asking me to help lead a canvassing group traveling from Wilmington, Delaware to Media, Pennsylvania.

After getting some tips from one of her traveling companions, Marijo quickly picked up on the value of face to face contact through canvassing. She also paid attention to the different sorts of reactions they encountered on their trip.

The supporters of Obama were grateful to learn about the opening of an office just a few miles from their homes, hear of an event coming up in their community with Senator Biden, and to accept and wear a button. For those who were undecided, we provided information important to their concerns. They seemed to value the conversation itself and the time we took to listen and respond to their concerns and questions. They also valued specific data and facts that we shared with them in conversation. Finally, I was surprised to find that it wasn’t really unpleasant when others were not receptive. They generally were respectful in the way they expressed their lack of support, and we offered a similar respect in return. I left that day having learned a lot about canvassing, and I learned a lot about the issues concerning those outside my own social circles. This gave me an even greater respect for those who have been canvassing every week for months, and I gained some new friends.

Looking forward to the weeks ahead, Marijo offered some final words of wisdom to anyone considering taking a canvassing trip of their own. "Give it a try," she said,"…you might like it!"

Sign up today to join volunteers like Marijo on a Drive for Change canvassing trip to Pennsylvania.

Message from David Plouffe: How we're going to win

Campaign Manager David Plouffe just sent out this email...

Amanda --

Want a look inside our strategy to win the battleground states?

I recorded a video on my laptop yesterday to brief you on the plan -- including details that haven't been shared publicly before.

Our fight in the battleground states is going to be tougher than a lot of you may think. Take Florida, where George Bush won by just 381,000 votes in 2004. The campaign we're running there is going to cost more than $39 million.

That can only come from supporters like you -- unlike John McCain, we don't take money from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs.

To reach our goal, we need 50,000 new donors by Friday at midnight.

You can inspire a fellow supporter to make their first donation -- and make your donation go twice as far.

Will you watch the video and double your impact with a donation today?

This race has come down to a matter of weeks, and it could pivot on a few tremendously important swing states.

Supporters like you are strengthening this campaign in amazing ways -- voter registration efforts, organizing in your communities, and bringing folks into the political process like never before.

Barack and Joe can't win this without you.

Make a donation of $25 or more right now to provide the resources we'll need to make victory a reality:

https://donate.barackobama.com/promise

This campaign is committed to winning in every state we can. But it's the support of folks like you that will decide this election.

Thanks for everything you're doing,

David

David Plouffe
Campaign Manager
Obama for America

Women Back Obama-Biden on the Issues

While John McCain has been distracting from the issues at hand with the sleaziest campaign Americans have ever seen, Barack Obama and Joe Biden are traveling the country discussing the issues that women and families care about, such as ensuring women are paid the same as men for equal work, the right for women to make their own family planning choices, reforming our health care system, and rebuilding an economy that strengthens the middle class.

This week the Obama campaign is highlighting the stark differences between McCain-Palin and Obama-Biden on the issues women and families care about with events across the country and new advertising. A new ad - called “Burden” - highlights John McCain’s failure to stand up for equal pay for women at a time when more and more families depend on the income earned by working women.

Watch “Burden” below....

The ad will air in key battleground states on Tuesday and DC/Northern VA markets. The ad will run during programming with large female audiences, including morning shows, soap operas, daytime TV, cable channels like Lifetime, Oxygen, E!, HGTV, and Bravo and during the fall premieres of several prime time shows. There will be a companion radio spot that goes up on Tuesday that will be in similar markets and a web ad appearing on sites that women frequent such as iVillage and magazine sites.

To kick-off the week of activities, the Obama campaign announced an impressive list of national women leaders who stand with the Obama–Biden ticket because of their record of fighting for women and families and the change they will bring to all Americans. On Tuesday the National Organization for Women and Feminist Majority endorsed the Obama-Biden ticket for the change women need.

On Wednesday, the Obama-Biden campaign received the endorsement of Lilly Lebetter at an event with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden in Virginia. On Wednesday night, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton will participate in one of the largest women’s web forums, reaching tens of thousands of women in their living rooms.

On Friday, Barack Obama, Joe Biden & Jill Biden will hold women’s rallies in battleground states and over the weekend women leaders will be joining with Obama supporters to hold Women for the Change We Need events in all 50 states.

There’s a reason why 53% of women voters believe that Obama-Biden better understands the issues and concerns important to women, compared to 35% for McCain-Palin, according to a September poll for Emily’s List. While Obama and Biden have a record of fighting to strengthen families and provide women with the rights and support they deserve, John McCain and Sarah Palin offer just more of the same.

Continue reading to see where Barack and McCain stand on women's issues...

Vote For Change

As we gear up for an historic election, we've launched a new website designed to simply the voting process and make it easy for voters across the country to participate. VoteforChange.com is a new voter registration tool that allows you to verify your registration status, register to vote for the first time, or get the relevant absentee voting information for your state – all online.

As deputy campaign manager Steve Hildebrand told the Boston Globe:

We think the turnout will be beyond record turnout, and if we're effective, we will have done two additional things -- brought in millions of new people who are registered to vote and we will increase the percentage of registered voters who will turn out.

This race is too close and too important to stay home on Election Day. Often the reason that people don't vote is because they don't understand how easy it is to register to vote. VoteforChange.com simplifies the process. It allows voters to register, check registration status, or find a polling location – all at the click of a button.

Now that we have done the hard part and given our candidate a huge win here in Delaware, we must follow through and choose the delegates who will represent Barack in Denver.

If you have signed up to be a sub-division level delegate you MUST attend your representative district (RD) caucus this month. You should have received information in the mail about the upcoming RD caucuses and what you need to do. Please remember to attend. Some districts have a lot of applicants while others have just one or two. You won't know how many other supporters will be there until you attend. You will be allowed to give a short speech to make your case as to why you should be voted on to the state convention in Dover. Remember that when you vote, you should vote for the most loyal and ardent supporters to move on to the next level!

Here is the link to the Delaware Democratic Party site for specific information on location and time for the various RD caucuses:

http://www.deldems.org/ht/d/sp/i/1126873/pid/1126873

Also, if you missed the opportunity to sign up as a sub-division level delegate you can still get in on the fun by signing up as an At-Large delegate. Delaware is alloted 3 At-Large delegates. If you would like to sign up, call the state party office at 302-328-9036. You have until March 5th to file.

Thank You Delaware!

A little over three weeks ago, Brandon Hurlbut showed up in Wilmington as the state director for the Obama Delaware campaign. It was a nice title, but he had no staff, no offices, and nowhere to stay. And the most recent poll in Delaware showed Hillary Clinton with a 24 point lead over Barack.

But what Brandon had was so much more important -- he had the help and support and enthusiasm of hundreds of dedicated volunteers in the state.

That contagious energy and enthusiasm led to the donation of our HQ office on Orange Street and our office opening party on January 19. It's what produced volunteers every single day who showed up to make phone calls. It's what kept our kitchen well-stocked with food. It's what drew 2,700 people to see Michelle in Wilmington and Dover, and what led 20,000 people to come out on a perfect Sunday afternoon to see Barack in Rodney Square. More importantly, that energy and enthusiasm is what led to an army of volunteers hitting the streets and phones on Election Day to get our supporters to the polls.

Last night, all of your efforts paid off. We won a decisive 11 point victory that demonstrated strength not only in New Castle County, but also Kent and Sussex Counties. We showed that Barack could attract not only African American voters in Wilmington, but also rural, white voters in the southern part of the state. This ability to put together a broad coalition of voters is the key to Barack becoming the Democratic nominee and the next President of the United States.

True to its motto of being the First State, Delaware led the way last night.

I'll post photos in the coming days, but I just wanted to thank everyone for what you've helped us accomplish. The entire campaign staff will be eternally grateful to all of you.

Election Day Dispatch

A year ago, Nicole was a community organizer in San Francisco. For six years, she worked at the grassroots level to help people improve their neighborhoods and communities. She didn’t get involved in national electoral politics – something about the process just turned her off.

Two days ago, Nicole stood on a stage in Wilmington, DE and rallied a crowd of 20,000 to vote for Barack. She had them take out their cell phones and call undecided voters. She told them the same thing she has been saying on the streets of San Francisco for half a decade: you have the power to change your world.

It has been a big week for politics in Delaware. Last Thursday Michelle came and drew the biggest crowds she has ever drawn on the campaign trail. Nearly 3,000 people came out to hear her speak at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington and at Delaware State University in Dover.
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"
If Patrick Kennedy Can Do It, So Can You

Rep. Patrick Kennedy came to Wilmington today to meet with a group of seniors and Latino leaders. But he also came to canvass. After giving a pep talk to our staff and volunteers, he hit the streets. If he can do it, so can you.

Polls are open from 7 a.m., and we're not going to stop working until the polls close at 8 p.m. Even if you only have a few hours to spare, call HQ at 573-2540, and we'll send you to the office closest to you. Or if you'd rather cook, we need food at all of our offices. We've run a great campaign so far, but it won't mean anything if we don't get our supporters to the polls on Tuesday.

'Obama drops in on Delaware'

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Barack Obama spoke to a raucous overflow crowd in sun-splashed Rodney Square in Wilmington yesterday afternoon … two days before the crucial Super Tuesday voting here and in 21 other states.

… Obama's appearance came just three days after his wife, Michele, appeared in Wilmington and Dover. Obama's camp has shown an intriguing level of interest in the First State, which has a mere 15 delegates up for grabs tomorrow of nearly 1,700 to be awarded nationally.

"We've said from the beginning that we are running races in all 22 states," said Chris Lu, Obama's Delaware communications director. "After bringing Michelle Obama here, and now Sen. Barack Obama, perhaps people are starting to believe us."

Be Heard: Write a Letter to the Editor

Getting the word out about the movement for change growing behind Barack Obama requires reaching out to people that haven’t been involved in politics before.

One of the ways you can help us keep our movement growing is by writing a Letter to the Editor of your local paper. Your letters will play a crucial role in inspiring other supporters to get involved with our campaign to change America. It's one of the most powerful ways to make your voice heard in your community and share your hope with your neighbors.

You can use the link below to submit your letters online to the Delaware News Journal:

Delaware News Journal

Be a Delegate for Barack

This comes from Rob Carver, the campaign's New Castle County coordinator:

Jeff Berman, the Obama campaign’s National Director of Delegate Operations has asked that we do everything humanly possible to try and get at least 3-4 supporters signed up as delegates in each representative district (RD) in the state. In the alternative, we need as many people as possible in each subdivision to sign up. Delaware has 4 subdivisions: the three counties plus the City of Wilmington. Delegate Nominee forms need to be completed and returned by Jan 31. The forms do not need to be signed. The person filling out the form is the “nominee” and they MUST indicate Barack Obama as their presidential candidate preference for them to be considered an official Obama delegate nominee.

The Delegate selection process in Delaware is a bit complicated but the key things to remember right now are that delegate nominees need to complete and return the form by Jan. 31 to the Delaware Dems HQ AND they need to show up at their RD caucus meetings scheduled between Feb. 8-29 to get voted forward to the state convention in Dover on April 5.

Here is more info on the selection process - http://www.deldems.org/

Please pass this along to anyone and everyone who supports Barack in Delaware and may be willing to participate in the Delegate selection process.

Contact and mailing info can be found here:

http://www.deldems.org/ht/d/sp/i/725590/pid/725590

35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Obama Statement on 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision

CHICAGO, IL- Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement on the 35th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.

"Thirty-five years after the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, it’s never been more important to protect a woman’s right to choose. Last year, the Supreme Court decided by a vote of 5-4 to uphold the Federal Abortion Ban, and in doing so undermined an important principle of Roe v. Wade: that we must always protect women’s health. With one more vacancy on the Supreme Court, we could be looking at a majority hostile to a women’s fundamental right to choose for the first time since Roe v. Wade. The next president may be asked to nominate that Supreme Court justice. That is what is at stake in this election.

Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice, and have consistently had a 100% pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America. "When South Dakota passed a law banning all abortions in a direct effort to have Roe overruled, I was the only candidate for President to raise money to help the citizens of South Dakota repeal that law. When anti-choice protesters blocked the opening of an Illinois Planned Parenthood clinic in a community where affordable health care is in short supply, I was the only candidate for President who spoke out against it. And I will continue to defend this right by passing the Freedom of Choice Act as president.

Moreover, I believe in and have supported common-sense solutions like increasing access to affordable birth control to help prevent unintended pregnancies. In the Illinois state Senate, when Congress failed to require insurance plans to cover FDA-approved contraceptives, I made sure those contraceptives were covered for women in Illinois. In the U.S. Senate, I've worked with Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) on a bill that would make birth control more affordable for low-income and college women, and introduced the Senate version of Representative Hilda Solis’ bill to reduce unintended pregnancies in communities of color. As President, I will improve access to affordable health care and work to ensure that our teens are getting the information and services they need to stay safe and healthy.

But we also know that Roe v. Wade is about more than a woman’s right to choose; it’s about equality. It’s about whether our daughters are going to have the same opportunities as our sons. And so to truly honor that decision, we need to update the social contract so that women can free themselves, and their children, from violent relationships; so that a mom can stay home with a sick child without getting a pink slip; so that she can go to work knowing that there’s affordable, quality childcare for her children; and so that the American dream is within reach for every family in this country. This anniversary reminds us that it’s not enough to protect the gains of the past – we have to build a future that’s filled with hope and possibility for all Americans."

Honoring Dr. King

The Delaware campaign took part in several events around the state to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Over the weekend, supporters marched in parades in Dover and Lewes. Today, we had volunteers handing out buttons and bumper stickers at a celebration in Seaford, as well as a 800-person breakfast in Wilmington. We also signed up 68 new volunteers at the Wilmington breakfast.

Also, I wanted to make sure everyone saw Barack's statement on this important occasion:

"On this Martin Luther King Day, we still face too many barriers to justice and equality in this country. To tear them down, Americans need to come together. In Dr. King's words, 'unity is the great need of the hour.' But what makes it particularly difficult to come together is that we have a politics that seeks to drive us apart. We are told that those who differ from us on a few things are different from us on all things; that our problems are the fault of those who don't think like us or look like us or come from where we do. This kind of divisive politics distracts us from the common challenges we face - war and poverty; injustice and inequality.

But while the critical first step toward coming together is changing our hearts and minds, we cannot stop there. It is not enough to bemoan the plight of poor children in this country and remain unwilling to push our elected officials to provide the resources to fix our schools. It is not enough to decry the disparities of health care and yet allow the insurance companies and the drug companies to block much-needed reforms. It is not enough for us to abhor the costs of a misguided war, and yet allow ourselves to be driven by a politics of fear that sees the threat of attack as a way to scare up votes instead of a call to come together around a common effort.

If we are to truly bring about the unity that is so crucial in this time, we must find it within ourselves to act on what we know; and to understand that living up to this country's ideals and its possibilities will require great effort and resources; sacrifice and stamina. That is Dr. King's vision, and that is the legacy we honor today."
