On Thursday, Vice President Biden called out the insurance industry's escalating war on health reform in a special message to OFA, and asked for your help in fighting back.

Sure enough, the insurance industry is already stepping up the attack: Reports just leaked from a closed-door meeting where insurance industry lobbyists frantically warned Republican members of Congress that it was not in their interest to "ever vote for this thing" and said supporting reform is like "giving comfort to the enemy." USA Today is reporting that groups opposing reform are lobbying at "a record pace" -- and the Associated Press notes that they've already spent an astounding $32 million on TV ads this year.

This is what we're up against. President Obama, Vice President Biden, and all of us together through OFA are fighting back -- but success depends on having the resources to win.

This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

President Obama has won Nobel Peace for 2009, for giving the world "hope for a better future", we give the President our best wishes and heartiest congratulations. President Barack Obama has been rated as the finest Statesman the world has seen, in the recent years by leading political analysts. His economic policies has seen, the US economy as well as the world economy cool down, from the free fall it has been witnessing. President Obama's climate change initiatives will be creating more job oppurtunity, than any industrial or green revolutions has created so far.

Lets also seek in earnest, pursual of Ethical Governance, i.e Ethics based policymaking and management that addreses performance issues, in business, government, politics, international relations, health care and beyond. The compromise in these, has seen financial woes in major institutions, nations being depraved and fleeced by corrupt practices. Lets seek active support and cooperation for Ethical Governance, locally and globally, to save the world from financial meltdowns, terrorism, corrupt politicians and bureaucrats and gross misuse of power and government machinaries, by despotic rulers, to make this world a better place to live in. The cavalry is here -- and they're in white coats and scrubs: More than a half a million doctors and millions of nurses are joining forces to help pass real health reform.

Americans listen to their nurses and doctors when it comes to health reform -- and for good reason. If we can help them amplify their voices, it'll be a huge boost to our campaign for change.

So we're working on a new television ad featuring their voices explaining why doctors and nurses so strongly support President Obama's plan -- and asking Congress to pass it. We'll run the ad in key states and districts all around the country to show folks where health professionals stand, cut through the spin, and build even greater support for reform.

But to produce and air the new ad before the Senate starts debating a final bill, we'll need to raise $300,000 by Thursday. Can you donate $25 right away?

The American Medical Association, Doctors for America, and a dozen other physicians groups representing 500,000 doctors are endorsing reform. So are the American Nurses Association and other organizations representing millions of nurses.

They're speaking out because they see the shortcomings of our health care system firsthand, every day: patients denied the care they prescribe, families losing access to their doctors, and a system that forces them to spend more time with paperwork and less time with patients.

These voices need to be heard -- with so much deception out there clouding the debate, it's critical that medical professionals are able to focus the country on the simple fact that health reform is good medicine.

But the final congressional committee could vote on their reform bill as early as Wednesday -- and debate on final legislation could start by the end of the week. As you may know, Wednesday, September 30 is the end of the current federal campaign finance reporting period. Since his announcement a week and a half ago, Andrew has been working the phones to raise money for his campaign. In these last few days before the reporting deadline, we’d like to give Andrew a little help. So, we’ve planned a “Dialing for Dollars” event at Sue and Tim Damour’s home.

I’m hoping that you can join us on Monday, September 28 and/or Tuesday, September 29 from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm to make phone calls on Andrew’s behalf. We will be calling Andrew’s past donors and asking them if they’d be willing to contribute to his campaign by the September 30 deadline. This is your chance -- you ingenious, insightful, funny people out there -- to make a 30-second ad telling the story about why the status quo has got to go, or explaining how the Obama plan will ensure we get the secure, quality care we need without breaking the budget.

The top submissions will be voted on by the public and a panel of experts, with the winning ad aired on national television. This is your opportunity to add your voice and creativity to the debate, get some great exposure for your work, and make a huge difference.

At the beginning of August, President Obama wrote to the OFA community to challenge us to work hard, break through the noise and give the American people a voice in the fight for health insurance reform.

It wasn't easy: With Congress back home, special interests and partisan attack groups went into overdrive spreading lies, and the media seemed to broadcast any story of conflict or division they could find.

But you accepted the President's challenge -- and delivered.

See it for yourself: Check out the latest photos and stories from around the country.

Our strategy for the month was simple: engage the millions of individuals who know we need change to fight the lies and tell the truth, build support for reform, and ensure that support is highly visible while members of Congress are home gauging public opinion. We continued our methodical, battle-tested approach of volunteers reaching out online and offline in every part of the country. We offered the facts, answered questions and engaged those who were ready to get involved.

And the results were extraordinary. OFA supporters like you came together in an unprecedented way over the past four weeks -- and it couldn't have happened without the individual volunteers who make it all possible:

Folks like Rebecca E. in Santa Fe, New Mexico, who voted for the first time last year -- and collected more than 1,800 health care declarations this summer. Across the country, we've collected more than 1 million signatures in support of the President's core principles for health insurance reform.
Supporters like Nita L. in Longmont, Colorado, who organized hundreds of supporters in her town to come with her to talk with their member of Congress about how much this fight means to them. They were among the more than 70,000 folks who showed up at 350 town halls -- where supporters of reform at times outnumbered opponents by 10-1 -- and volunteers who made 65,000 trips to local congressional offices.
It's the people who made more than 100,000 calls to Congress to thank representatives fighting for change -- like Nancy T. in Hendersonville, North Carolina, who hosted a health care phone booth because, after her heart transplant, she knows that no American should have to choose between financial ruin and getting the care they need.
It's the 1,500 supporters who filled a local recreation center in Kansas City, Missouri, at a town hall meeting with Senator Claire McCaskill, and the 2,500 people who jammed the streets to hear from Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio -- just two of the more than 4,000 events where folks gathered to show their support across all 50 states in August.

All of these signatures, calls, office drop-bys, conversations, gatherings, and town hall meetings, all of the late nights, homemade signs, long hours in the sun, and tireless volunteers who make it happen -- totaling more than 1.5 million people who've taken part in this campaign for real reform -- it all adds up to one incredible movement for change.

As Congress returns to D.C. and we roll up our sleeves for the final push toward reform, we know the hardest work may yet lie ahead. The special interests and those in Congress who have pledged to oppose the President no matter what will stoop even lower in the weeks ahead.

Thanks to your support we continue to make progress.

There are a few events coming up this week that lend themselves well to signature gathering.

The Banks in Harmony Concert on Thursday July 16 takes place at Utah Park on S. Peoria St. at E. Mexico Ave. The band starts playing at 6:30 but people start gathering around 5:30 or 5:45. Duane and I have been at the concerts that have taken place so far and have done very well. We stop as soon as the band is introduced. Stay for the pop rock music of the Wendy Woo Band.

Neither Duane or I can be there to collect signatures this week. Actually, I will be unavailable to do work on the campaign until July 20.

The other event is KidSpree on Sat and Sun July 18 and 19 at Bicentennial Park at E. Alameda Ave. and S. Potomac St. from 10 am to 5 pm. There is a free shuttle bus that runs frequently from the southwest parking lot of the Town Center of Aurora (Aurora Mall). Park free in the parking lot near S. Abilene St. north of E. Exposition Ave. We are permitted to collect signatures inside the event area as long as we keep moving and don't have a booth.

If you can attend any of these events, please coordinate with Duane Senn at dasenn@qwest.net or 303-364-7368.

It is important at these events that you start off asking the person if they live in Aurora and then if they are registered to vote. Please make sure they complete their signature block. It should look something like

1) Arapahoe Picnic Sunday July 19th, Westlands Park, 5701 Quebec, Greenwood Village 12-4PM. I have attached a flyer for those inclined to sent to your email lists. Thank you to all the house district chairs who have agreed to bring items for the picnic. We still have a few items we could use assistance with.

2) Arapahoe County 3rd Annual Pat Schroeder Dinner, Aug 14th, Red Lion Hotel, 3200 S. Parker Road, Aurora. Special guest speaker will be Governor Bill Ritter. Invitations will be mailed next week for this event.For more information, please see our web site early next week or give me a call.

After 3 weeks of the development impact fee petition drive we have 43 completed petitions with 70 more out in the field. With 25 signatures per petition that is 1075 signatures turned in with 1750 pending for a total of 2825 potential signatures. That potentially puts us past the half way mark with a little less than a month to go.

We know that not all the signatures are going to be valid, so we have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks. Please let me know how each of you is doing with your petitions, if you have any questions, or if you need more petitions. A few of you have recruited other volunteers which is great. We need a small army to get this accomplished.

Talking points include:

We need a complete overhaul of our current broken health insurance system, one that simplifies and equalizes benefits and assures a standard bill-paying procedure.
This is the only kind of reform that will allow us to cover every American and still save money.
Providing basic health care to all Americans is a moral responsibility for our society and our for-profit insurance system is not up to the challenge.
2/3 of people want a single-payer system and 59% of physicians do too
The rest just need solid leadership from Washington and good educational efforts to convince them it's the right move. Please lead our people.
Mandated insurance will not be well-received by the people as they no longer trust insurance companies and it does not contain costs. It is not sensible to try to make that system work when it has failed seven times at the state level.
Piecemeal efforts to reform health care such as improvements in IT connectivity, paying doctors by outcomes, and covering preventive care are nice, but they are bandaids and this country cannot afford just bandaids. We need surgery!

Blue Star Families has transitioned to a NON-PARTISAN organization, and seeks to be a VOICE for military families -- a bridge between military families, the shapers of policy affecting military life, and our nation at large. SD 33 is so lucky to have such great Candidates. Anthony Graves stands out among the group. Anthony not only grew up in SD 33 but he has worked hard to organize and follow in the footsteps of the leaders before him. I am proud to know Anthony Graves and I know the future of Colorado will be in competent, compassionate and respectful hands with Anthony Graves representing SD 33.

It is important to the future of our children and their children to nurture and support the great leaders we have here in Colorado. During the Obama Campaign I met many exceptional people right here in our own State that stood out among the rest. People that I will admire the rest of my life. People that I know will continue to work in their neighborhoods, counties and this proud State. Carrying through with the same values that tie us all together as a State.

Whether you live in Downtown Denver, Parkhill, Montbello, Montclare, Stapleton, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Jefferson County, Grand Junction, Vail, Colorado Springs, Pueblo.... we are all connected. We represent one of the most diverse and fastest growing States in this Union.

Our State Legislature will end a session on May 6th. They will return without Senator Peter Groff. He will be helping President Obama. So there's a tough decision that will be made in SD 33 to replace this great leader. The budget stills needs debate and finalization, health care still has some questions, funding for our schools and redistricting is coming up. So to the Vacancy Committee for SD 33 please think long and hard about the future of SD 33 because your decision not only affects your district but it also affects the entire State. ;

Our Native son Anthony Graves is a ColoradanforObama. We elected him as our DNC representative at the Colorado State Convention let's elect him to represent SD 33 and the State of Colorado.

If you aren't on the vacancy committee you can call a Precinct Captain in SD 33 or elected State Official and ask the m to support or vote for Anthony Graves for SD 33.

Colorado is fortunate to have paid staff "on the ground" ... Gabe Lifton-Zoline, State Director (and Colorado native), and Jen Cheyne ("chain"), State Field Director. Currently, they are working out of the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters. In order to "hear" from Colorado Obama volunteers, they are traveling the state on a "listening tour". Organizing for America (OFA) - Colorado understands how important Jeffco was (and is) to the success of President's Obama's mission ... winning the election, and now, changing the direction of our country and the way "we the people" influence and intersect with Washington.

Gabe and Jen initially set up two listening sessions in Arvada and Golden; we jointly decided to add a third option, to accommodate daytime folks or those who want to avoid traffic. PROTEST OF EXCEL lerated rate increases

Rally at the Public Utility Commission (PUC) to protest Excel raising their rates and Comanche 3, their coal fired power plant

For those interested, a rally will be held on Monday, April 20 at 1560 Broadway, downtown Denver, where the free mall shuttle bus begins at 16th and Broadway. The rally will preceed the Public Utilities Commission 4:00pm public hearing. The hearing will be held at the PUC office, 1560 Broadway, on the second floor. Please be aware that Xcel intends to start another rate increase filing on May 1st. This is after their own financial records show annualy increasing profit, the last about $100 million more than the previous year.

The rally will be in protest of Excel's Comanche 3 coal fired power plant. Here are some facts

We are increasing CO2 significantly when we should be going in the other direction. Xcel's new Comanche 3 coal fired plant will increase Xcel's Colorado CO2 emissions by a stunning 9%, increasing the CO2 emissions by 4-5 million tons per year.
In Colorado, we currently get more of our electricity from coal, when compared to the national average. Colorado gets about 73% of our electricity from coal, versus 50% for the U.S. overall
The costs of Xcel's Comanche 3 is staggering. Econometric models show that with Xcel's proposed modest carbon tax of $20/ton and increased coal costs, the plant will cost about $1 billion per decade.
Capital costs versus fuel costs: Big difference between renewable energy (RE) and fossil fuel (FF) plants: whereas 85% of an RE plant is for capital costs -- i.e. to BUILD the plant; while 85% of a FF plant is for FUEL -- and the fuel goes up in smoke and pollution...how smart is that?
Bottom line is that we need to REDUCE CO2 -- not bring another coal plant online.

My name is Gabe Lifton-Zoline, and I'm the new Colorado State Director for Organizing for America.

Since Inauguration Day, Organizing for America has been dedicated to making real the change we fought for during the election. But to be successful, we need to hear from you -- your effort and commitment are the backbone of this movement and this organization.

Health Care For All Colorado Update on House Bill 09-1273

There are three readings for bills in the Colorado House of Representatives and the Colorado Guaranteed Health Care Act passed the second reading on Monday after lively debate. The third reading is for the final recorded vote and that should occur on Wednesday as requested by Rep.Kefalas. The legislators are lobbying each other on the final votes as they have heard debate and have heard from their constituents.

Rep Kefalas would rather we let this process continue and not overwhelm Representatives now. Rep Kefalas, who has wisely helped the bill get to this point, thinks the final vote will be close. He thinks the bill will pass by a very slim margin. Then we are off to the Senate.

If you have a relationship with any of our Colorado State Senators I would start asking for their support now. You can also send messages to the Governor, who is still in opposition.

We are all very passionate to move this legislation forward. However, we are getting feedback that we need to be positive, polite and temperate in our messages. It always pays to be gracious.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY CALL TO ACTION!

Dear fellow Aurora Obama supporters,

I'm writing you to ask you to take a few minutes tonight to act for fairness in access to higher education. At the end of this email I suggest ways you can do that.

Young people who have lived in Colorado for years and attended high school here are residents of Colorado, regardless of their immigration status. They all deserve a higher education at a price that makes it a realistic possibility, and that is the in-state tuition rate. If some of them happen to be undocumented because of their parents' decision to bring them here without going through the legal channels, that doesn't make these young people any less deserving.

This is more than just an issue of justice. It's a matter of simple economics. Young people who get on the track to upward mobility many of us get to take for granted will cost the state less in the long run. They'll need less Medicaid and less in social services. If they feel vested in the economic system around them they'll be less likely to become involved the police, courts and prisons, too.

Not only will they cost us less, they'll contribute more. They'll earn more, so they'll pay more taxes. They'll be helping to build and diversify Colorado's economy to meet the challenges of the 21st century, too.

As Barack Obama said, "Putting a college education within reach of every American (is) the best investment we can make in our future."

This bill has substantial support. The Denver Post is behind it. Ednewscolorado.org, a web site sponsored by The Daniels Fund, The Piton Foundation, and other groups, has a good, detailed article about why the bill is good for Colorado. It needs more support, though, and right now it is important to let Senator Morgan Carroll that the grass roots supports it, too.

There are different ways you can do that. The Bell Institute has made an easy way for you to send her and your state representative an email about this issue. Or you can just email her directly at morgan.carroll.senate@state.co.us or at morgan@senmorgancarroll.com. You can call her office at 303-866-4879 or her cell phone (she gives the number on her web site) at 303-726-1742. If you want some ideas for a phone call this web site has some suggestions. You could even meet her for coffee at her monthly open forum tomorrow morning from 7:00 to 8:00 at the E Steamer Coffee House at 360 S. Chambers Rd.

We want to take this opportunity to thank ea ch and every one of you for your support of House Bill 09-1273. As we lobby on behalf of Health Care for All Colorado at the Capitol, we hear continuously about your efforts - that they are strong and that they are working!

Tomorrow (April 3), the House Appropriations Committee will vote on HB1273. We would like to pack the hearing room with supporters of the bill. The hearing will begin upon adjournment, which means sometime after 10 a.m. but possibly not until the early afternoon. The hearing will take place in the Legislative Services Building. (200 E. 14th Ave. immediately south of the Capitol) During the time that we wait for the hearing to begin, we will lobby, write letters, and record video testimony in support of the bill.

We are very hopeful that the bill will move from Appropriations to the House floor. This will be a testament to your hard work and dedication to assuring every Coloradan has access to cost-effective, high-quality, affordable health care. However, success on Friday is only the next step to making HB 09-1273 law.

Now is the time for you to contact your Representative in the House and ask him or her to support HB 09-1273, the Colorado Guaranteed Health Care Act, when it comes to the House floor for a vote. The House may vote as early as Monday or Tuesday, April 6 or 7. Your message can be as simple as "Please support HB 09-1273" or you might consider telling your representative why comprehensive health care reform is important to you and your loved ones. Please ask your family, friends, and co-workers to do the same. When contacting legislators and their staff, please make the utmost effort to remain courteous when expressing passionate concern about health care for every Coloradan. At this point in the session, tension is rising within our group and also at the Capitol. Strong, polite support for the bill is highly effective.

If you are uncertain as to who represents you, please visit the legislative directory of the Colorado Behavioral Health Council, one of the nearly 60 groups that has endorsed HB1273.

We also ask that you support Health Care for All Colorado's efforts on behalf of HB1273 with a contribution of money. The Beard: A candidate who listens and embraces change

I announced my candidacy on Nov. 5, the day after the last election because I felt it was important to get an early start addressing the enormous problems facing our country.

But I found one issue dominating some of my conversations with voters. My beard.

Because "The Beard" became such a distraction, I shaved it off. I even made a short video showing different styles of facial hair as the beard came off. Take a look for yourself. I think you'll enjoy it. And don't forget to vote for your favorite style.

And let's get back to talking about the real issues -- jobs, the economy and health care, for example.

Why I'm running

It's the first question every candidate gets: Why are you running?

I'm running because the 6th Congressional District deserves a representative in Congress who will stand up for the people and businesses who call CD6 home.

I may not be a career politician, but I do know firsthand the issues that are facing this nation. People are struggling, and my family is no different. Due to the current economic crisis, my wife has been placed on notice that she may lose her job. My son, a senior in high school, has been accepted to college but we're confronted with the uncertainty of whether we can now afford the price tag associated with higher education. When my daughter twisted her ankle recently, we had to choose between the high cost of medical care and the less expensive alternative of home remedies like ice bags and Ibuprofen.

These are the issues we face as families and the issues we face as a country. The economic crisis. Affordable education. Quality health care. In my law practice I work tirelessly to advance and protect the interests of my clients. As a United States Congressman, I will work tirelessly to advance and protect your rights, your interests, your ideals, your values.

Our new congressman's only been in office a few months and he's already voted against equal pay for women, against expanding health care coverage for children and against an economic stimulus program that will bring jobs and other economic benefits to CD6. His answer to everything seems to be "just say no."

I hope to earn your trust and your vote by representing you. We need to get beyond the politics of "just say no" or "just say yes" based on party. Unlike our current congressman, I'll represent the people of the Sixth District -- not a party or an ideology. I hope you'll support me because I'm right on the issues you care about.

But I need your support to bring real representation to CD6. Please donate, volunteer or help spread the word.

EFCA: A Step Toward Rebuilding Our Middle Class

Congress is taking up the debate on the Employee Free Choice Act and I'm supporting this important piece of legislation.

I see it as taking a stand for America. We need to support America's businesses as we rebuild our economy. But we also need to support American workers and begin rebuilding a strong middle class. We can't continue the race to the bottom that drives high-paying jobs overseas and forces too many Americans to settle for jobs that pay less and offer fewer benefits.

EFCA will make it easier for American workers to organize. That's not a popular issue here in Colorado or in CD6, where I'm running. And I suspect we won't see a lot of new union activity in Colorado as a result of EFCA even if it becomes law. But I'm supporting it because it's a step toward strengthening workers' bargaining rights and saving our middle class.

Coffman Watch

Colorado's new Independent Ethics Commission recently held a hearing on complaints against Congressman Coffman related to, among other things, the activities of an employee on the State Elections Staff when Mr. Coffman was Colorado's Secretary of State and the certification of a voting machine vendor who had done consulting work for Mr. Coffman's campaign.

Mr. Coffman called the complaints that led to the hearing frivolous. But there's nothing frivolous about ensuring that everyone's vote is counted. Our elected officials should never put their own personal interests ahead of the people they're elected to represent, and the allegation that Mr. Coffman may have done that deserved a serious and fair hearing -- regardless of the outcome.

We'll be keeping tabs on Mr. Coffman during the course of this campaign. And we'll give you regular updates on what we find.

Yesterday, we held our Citizen Advocacy Training. It was a huge success and thank you to all that attended. For those of you that did not attend, Senator Morgan Carroll was one of our presenters and talked about relationship-building with our legislators. She feels strongly about citizens reaching out to our elected officials to get our voices heard.

Colorado House Bill 1224

Senator Morgan Carroll recently introduced a bill that would end gender discrimination in health insurance rates. It is house bill 1224. HB 1224 will prohibit insurance companies from using gender as a factor when determining rates for health insurance in Colorado's individual market.

Currently, Colorado law allows women who buy health insurance to be charged more than men for equivalent coverage because gender can be used to determine insurance rates. Elminating gender as a rating factor would reduce health insurance rates for some women. Women are more likely to have lower incomes than men, but have more health care costs and higher out-of-pocket expenses as a share of their income. If passed, HB 1224 would mean more women would be able to receive health insurance coverage.

Call To Action

During the meeting, Senator Morgan Carroll issued an action item to all ACT members. She asked that we contact three of our state senators, whose support for this bill has waivered, and urge them for their support. On Monday, March 23 at 9:00 AM, it is scheduled to be voted on. We have one day to make a difference. Without the support of these three senators, this bill will not move forward.

End Gender Discrimination in Health Insurance Rates

On Monday the Colorado Senate voted to join several other states in seeking to ban gender discrimination in insurance rates. (HB09-1224 Rep. Sue Schafer & Sen. Morgan Carroll). The National Women's Law Center recently released a comprehensive study documenting pervasive and significant discrimination against women in insurance rates. The bill will likely be debated by the full Senate on Friday.

Colorado was the 2nd state to recognize women's right to vote in 1893 and leads the nation with the number of women elected to the state legislature (40%), yet many are surprised to learn gender discrimination in insurance rates remains legal in Colorado.

Women earn $0.78 on the dollar for every $1.00 men earn yet pay 30 - 40% more in individual health insurance plans, despite the fact that maternity coverage is not included in those plans.
Federal law has prohibited gender discrimination in employer-provided health insurance since the Civil Rights Act 1964 but that does not protect those who must purchase on the individual health market.
Colorado acted to prohibited race and ethnicity discrimination in ratings, but not gender.
More than 130,000 women in Colorado between ages 19 - 64 received health insurance through the individual market in 2006 - 2007 and paid more for comparable coverage.
This price discrimination increases the number of women (and their dependent children) who are uninsured.
Women who can not get insured here get pushed into public programs which we all pay for. It is better public policy to end the discriminatory pricing and get more women covered through private insurance.

The Employee Free Choice Act
Background
The Employee Free Choice Act is bipartisan legislation introduced by Sens. Edward
Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Reps. George Miller (D-CA) and Peter King (R-N.Y.). It passed
the U. S. House of Representatives, 241-185, on March 1, 2007, and gained majority
support in the U.S. Senate on June 26, 2007, but was blocked by a Republican filibuster.
The best opportunity for working men and women to get ahead economically is by
uniting with coworkers to bargain with their employers for better wages and benefits.
These are tough economic times - soaring gas and food prices, home foreclosures,
unaffordable health care, and shattered retirement security. Wages for working men and
women have stagnated while pay and bonuses for CEOs have sky-rocketed.
The Employee Free Choice Act is the most important legislative proposal in seventy
years because it will remove unfair barriers to union representation and collective
bargaining so that workers can get their fair share and improve jobs and benefits for
everyone. It will help workers achieve the American Dream by giving them the freedom
to choose a union and bargain collectively. It will mean that the economy can work for
everyone again.
Current federal labor law - the National Labor Relations Act - has become a barrier to
workers' rights. Companies intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire people who try to
organize unions. Workers are fired in a quarter of private-sector union organizing
campaigns and most workers who try to form unions are subjected to repeated, coercive
one-on-one anti-union meetings with their supervisors. Even after workers successfully
form unions, 44 percent of the time they can't get a first contract. This is an urgent crisis
for workers, blocking their free will and their ability to bargain for a better future.
Provisions
The Employee Free Choice Act remedies these problems in three specific ways:
1. Removes Current Barriers that Prevent Workers from Forming
Unions to Bargain Collectively
Requires that when a majority of employees has signed authorizations designating
the union as its bargaining representative, the union will be certified by the
National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Requires the Board to develop model
authorization language and procedures for establishing the validity of signed
authorizations. Changes the current corporate-dominated representation process
that encourages companies to coerce and intimidate workers who seek to form a
union and pressure them to influence their choice.
2. Guarantees Workers a Contract When They Form a New Union.
Provides that when an employer and newly formed union are unable to bargain a
first contract within 90 days, either party can request mediation by the Federal
Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS). If no agreement has been reached
after 30 days of mediation, the dispute is referred to binding arbitration. All time
limits can be extended by mutual agreement. This change eliminates current
incentives for employers to delay and stall negotiations and will dramatically
reduce the delay, frustration and animosity generated by the company-dominated
system.
3. Strengthens Penalties against Companies which Break the Law
During Organizing Campaigns and First Contract Negotiations.
Company violations have become epidemic in large part because remedies for
corporate misconduct, such as illegal firings of union supporters, are so weak that
companies treat them as a cost of doing business and a cheap way to scare
workers away from their union support. New, tougher remedies will provide
more protection for workers' rights.
a. Civil Penalties: Up to $20,000 per violation against companies found to
have willfully or repeatedly violated employees' rights during an organizing
campaign or first contract negotiations.
b. Treble Back Pay: Increases to three times back pay the amount a
company is required to pay when an employee is discharged or discriminated
against during an organizing campaign or first contract negotiations.
c. Mandatory Applications for Injunctive Remedies: Requires the NLRB
to seek a federal court injunction when there is reasonable cause to believe a
company has discharged or discriminated against employees, threatened to do so,
or engaged in conduct that significantly interferes with employee rights during an
organizing campaign or first contract negotiations. Equalizes remedies by making
mandatory injunctive remedies against companies the same as the currently
required injunctive remedies against unions.

"What's that?" you say, "I thought the campaign was over!" Yes, the electoral campaign is over, but the change has only begun. As Mitch Stewart, director of Organizing for America wrote a couple of days ago, "The current debate in Washington over President Obama's budget has made one thing clear -- ensuring our long-term prosperity won't come without a fight... That's why we need to bring the conversation back into homes and communities across America."

After some reluctance, I went to my.barackobama.com this morning to sign up for a canvass. To my surprise and dismay I found that no one in Aurora had set one up! The closest ones were created by the kids at Denver East High School and some folks in Centennial. What's up with that, Aurora? What are we--Republicans?

I'm going to have to go in the afternoon because I have two prior commitments at my church, doing a Share Colorado food distribution and working on our conversion to xeriscaping. With Progress Teams, we are hoping to connect a collection of people from different groups (OFA, Dem Party, mommy groups etc.) so that we can work together to create progressive change in our communities, holding our elected officials accountable, organizing community service events to address local needs, and educating our friends and neighbors about critical community issues.

Right now, we are recruiting Progress Team Leaders and Progress Team Members in your County.

Progress Team Leaders:
Our goal is to recruit 3 Progress Team Leaders to lead each Team. That way, leaders can share responsibility and help each other out. ProgressNow Education will provide Team Leaders with great training, materials, and all the tools and support you need to organize a team, effectively lobby your local leaders, organize community service projects, and host educational events. All we need from you is a commitment to lead and 2-4 hours a week.

Progress Team Members:
We want to help our Progress Team Leaders recruit at least 10 Progress Team Members per team. As a Team Member, your role will be to communicate with your Team Leaders about issues that are important to you and your neighbors, to participate in your Progress Team's community service events, educational events and grassroots lobbying efforts when you are able, and to promote your Team's events to your friends and neighbors.

Our kick-off training will be May 16-17 in Denver. We are still working out the details, but the New Organizing Institute will offer a day of Camp Obama/story telling/Organizing 101 training, and on day 2, ProgressNow will do shorter training sections on how to organize grassroots lobbying efforts, community service projects, and educational events, and how to use new media and on-line tools to enhance that work.

Rabbi Steven E. Foster of Temple Emanuel has been not only an inspiration to me and my family, but the community. He leads by example as does President Obama and his family.

Rabbi Foster recently wrote an article in our Congregations Bulletin. It is entitled We Can Make a Difference. He speaks of current issues, about making a difference, about prayer and asking that we pray for G-d to give us personal strength to do the work needed. He speaks of not losing Hope and that we need to give President Obama and his administration a chance.

This is Saoirse here, founder of Jeffco4Obama, former grassroots leader (and, for awhile during the general election, on staff) with Obama for America.
I am aware of the many opportunities to join in with grassroots efforts in Jeffco .... MoveOn.org, ProgressNow!, ColoradoCAN, etc. And for some of you, your neighborhood team has continued to stay very active and engaged. I have personally attended a training with Wellstone Action, and tapped into some activating energy in other organizations around the state (e.g., Progressive Majority, Center for Progressive Leadership, etc.) And we have some opportunities to work with our local party organizations as well.
Colorado has become a key state in the national political landscape. That provides us with some resources that can assist us all in the "call to action" our new president has issued.
I just want to let you know that Organizing for America plans to hire staff in Colorado soon. Some national staff positions have been filled, and we actually do have two positions operating and working on our behalf ... Volunteer Liaison Keith Ferguson and Regional (7 state region) "Desk" Kevin Puleo. I am told it will be 4-6 weeks for paid staff to be working here on the ground in Colorado. A primary goal for Organizing for America will be to provide support and training for neighborhood and comm'ty teams to either "re-activate" or continue working on behalf of local issues and local candidates in their neighborhoods. There will also be a local action coming "down the pike" so to speak very soon, i.e., something the national organization will ask us to do locally.

HOW TO GET / BE INVOLVED IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE

ALL CITIZENS CAN MAKE AN IMPACT

How do I know what bills are pending before the legislature? There is a grid tracking all introduced bills and where they are in the process called a Status Sheet which is updated daily. Go to http://www.leg.state.co.us/ and click on Status.

How do I know when a bill will be heard in hearing or scheduled for a floor vote? There is a calendar for the House and for the Senate which is updated daily during session. Go to http://www.leg.state.co.us/ and click on Calendar.

How can I observe or monitor actual legislative proceedings? You can go to the capitol in person. All are welcome. You can listen to audio broadcast by going to http://www.leg.state.co.us/ and clicking on Audio Broadcast. For proceedings on the House floor you can go to http://www.coloradochannel.net/.

When is the best time to weigh in on legislation? The earlier the better. If you can weigh in prior to introduction of a bill that has the best window for impact. Otherwise, try to weigh in prior to committee hearing, if possible. If you miss that window you can weigh in at hearing on the floor or as it heads to the 2nd chamber.

What can I do to impact legislation? You can call, email, write or meet with elected officials, draft letters to the editor or op ed pieces, blog or send information to your e-lists or phone trees to mobilize others to contacted elected officials. You can tell groups and other activists you are affiliated to try to grow a coalition to do the same thing. You can ask legislators to vote yes / no and tell them why and you can shape public opinion by getting education, information out to the press, blogs, or both. You can share research or expertise or prepare a fact sheet to on why to support or oppose a bill.

Whom do I contact? It is always a good idea to contact your own legislator who represents you and let them know you live in their district. You can find out who your elected officials are by contacting: http://www.votesmart.org/index.htm. You also want to contact the people on the committee prior to a committee vote and the members of the chamber prior to a floor vote. Tips for maximum impact on legislators: Be brief, be polite, include a few reasons, and how to follow up with you for more information.

What if I want to suggest a new bill / law? You only need to find one legislator willing to introduce your idea as a bill and it can be introduced. The legislative session runs January - May. Given our deadlines it is best to approach a lawmaker by the November prior to the legislative session because we have a limit on the # of bills we can carry.

How do I testify? Anyone can testify. Show up at the designated time and hearing room (see calendar) and sign in. There will be a witness sign-in sheet for every bill. When the Chairperson calls your name come forward, introduce yourself, who, if anyone you represent. Then prepare about 3 minutes of your comments on whether you support or oppose the bill and why. At that time the committee may have questions. Wait until the Chair calls on you by name to answer. (This creates a clear audio record of who is speaking). Then proceed to answer. If you cannot make it to testify in person, you can also prepare written comments, submit them to the Chair and ask that they be included in the record.

The public hearing on the proposed Colorado Guaranteed Health Care Act, House Bill-1273, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 18th at 1:30 pm. The hearing will be held in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Colorado Capitol. This delay will provide valuable time for us to gather additional endorsements in support of the bill.

Dear Stacey,

Just a few days after the bombing of Gaza started, my rabbi, Rabbi Brant Rosen here in Evanston, Illinois had the courage to write something on his blog* that may forever change his life, and the lives of those around him. As I read it, I could literally feel the earth shift beneath my feet. He said,

Send a note to Jon Stewart. Tell everyone you know to watch the segment.

We good liberal Jews are ready to protest oppression and human-rights abuse anywhere in the world, but are all too willing to give Israel a pass. It's a fascinating double-standard, and one I understand all too well. I understand it because I've been just as responsible as anyone else for perpetrating it.

So no more rationalizations. What Israel has been doing to the people of Gaza is an outrage. It has has brought neither safety nor security to the people of Israel and it has wrought nothing but misery and tragedy upon the people of Gaza.

The earth is shifting on this issue when the people to whom we look for guidance about right and wrong, people like Rabbi Brant, finally speak the truth- that killing will not bring peace. Not for the Israelis, not for the Palestinians, not for anyone. Many people from my own congregation, including my own daughter, wrote him to say "Thank you, thank you for finally saying these words out loud."

I felt something similar when I saw Jon Stewart on The Daily Show on Monday night. While almost all of the mainstream news in the United States has reported the story without any context whatsoever, repeating the lie that this is a simple case of Israel defending its people against irrational attacks, it was Jon Stewart, the main source of news for an entire generation of Americans, who got it right**.

He talked about the "soul-crushing" siege of Gaza, the occupation that has forced Palestinians to go through checkpoints to do anything at all, the perverse logic of trying to "get a war in" just before Obama's inauguration. When I watched this segment, I knew the earth was shifting. And I knew I had to thank Jon, and to make sure everyone I know watches his segment.

We all know that if every Jew in America said no to Israel's occupation of the Palestinians, it would still happen, because it has is seen as serving the interests of our country's foreign interests. And it is supported by Christian fundamentalists who believe it is one step closer to the end times. That's why we all need to work together- every single one of us.

So thank Jon by going here. And then tell everyone you know to watch this video. Tell your friends that if it seems like what is happening now is wrong, that's because it is.

By the way, the last haunting words of Rabbi Brant's post were these: "There, I've said it. Now what do I do?"

Hi,

This is Nancy Cronk from Arapahoe Teens for Obama. I tried to reach all of the young people I had phone numbers for, but realized some have been changed, and others were not available to me. I have two urgent things to tell them right away:

1) DOCUMENTARY ABOUT US! Thursday, January 8th from 6 - 8 p.m., a film crew from CA called "The Barack Nation" will be at my house to interview young Obama interns and volunteers for a documentary on the "We generation". We will have a short meet and greet and then let the kids talk to the crew. It is okay if they are not yet official members of Arapahoe Teens for Obama. Please help us spread the word to kids who volunteered on the campaign (or for the election in general). Please RSVP.

Any assistance in feeding these guys is much appreciated. I will have soda and healthy (sort of) munchies.

2) FACEBOOK PRESENCE we have a new facebook page so the kids can keep in touch/ meet other kids interested in politics. Go to "Arapahoe Teens for Obama" on facebook. Parents - please supervise your child's involvement! Thanks.

3) CERTIFICATES - certificates for volunteering which had not yet been mailed out will be available Thursday night at my house (ask), or if they contact me by mail.
