Could there be a reverse Bradley effect?

I'm trying not to be overly optimistic, but was wondering if there are some voters who are telling pollsters they are voting for McCain, but when they get inside the voting booth, might vote for Obama. Maybe they don't want to admit in front of their spouse or whomever when the polling people call, that they have some doubts about McCain. Maybe they are afraid their friends will mock them for not being red-blooded American patriots if they suggest they might vote for Obama. Maybe they don't want people to know that they would actually vote for a black guy. But for any of these reasons, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of closet Obama supporters out there in the heartland--people who know that things are seriously off track in this country, and have grave doubts about John McCain's judgment or temper or ideas or age or whatever.

It seems just as likely that there could be at least as many people like that as there are people who would tell a pollster that they are voting for Obama when they are secretly planning to vote for McCain.

What is the point of demonstrating outside the GOP convention?

It's not like you are going to convince any of the delegates of anything. So your audience must be the people watching on TV. But who is going to be sympathetic to the demonstrators' position? I think only those who are already sympathetic. Those on the fence are more likely to side with the police. Let's remember that the riots outside the Democratic convention in 1968 only helped Richard Nixon win the election, even though the police tactics in dealing with the demonstrators were horrific. Most people watching on tv are turned off by disorder, and sympathize with the forces of law and order.

I think a more effective type of demonstration would be to pretend you are a Republican and carry signs that take their positions to a logical extreme, a la Steven Colbert. For example, Shoot all illegal immigrants; or Death penalty for all abortion providers; or Bomb Iran. The news might pick up signs like that, and that would perhaps help advance the cause of showing that Republicans are nut jobs.

How Cuba will determine the 2008 Election.

Whether you are pro-Cuba or anti-Cuba, the debate may continue for centuries. One thing is certain. The nearly fifty year old, U.S. Embargo on Cuba has not worked, does not work and will not work. In stating so, we are not acknowledging, supporting or condoning Cuba’s current government.

“Election Moment”.

And what we must do so he Wins.

America can be seen as a nation of instant gratification, shock value and wishful thinking. Through these valid perceptions our ability to succeed against great odds is proven often. Our will to have good triumph over evil is undeniable. And most of all; our fortunate gifts living in this land prevail against our own internal enemy’s of thought.

This coming Presidential Election Day will require us all to do great battle with the enemy’s of thought, the high-jackers of thinking, the masters of influencing spontaneity.

HOW DEEP WILL YOU GO.

Barack Obama will lose if we don’t drudge out every ounce of racism alive and well in America. Our nations public voice and face has behaved at the highest levels of proper presentation; pretending that racism is dead or at least almost gone. But our private thoughts, deep in the gullies of ones own mind, lives the uncertainty of our personal truth. On “Election moment”, as we choose will America vote for a person who is not a white male? *There is nothing wrong with voting for a white male, that is not the point of this commentary.

HOW OBAMA MAY LOSE.

I can assert many voting Americans will walk to the voting booth on Election Day and gravel with their choice for a president based on color. And I can confirm, many voting Americans will inequitably vote for anyone but a black, mulatto or ethnic president. This “Election Moment” must be influenced by a character choice, nothing else.

THE SOLUTION.

On our campaign road to an Obama White house, we must remember to keep it simple. This Election Moment is not about Democrat or Republican, man or woman, even the color of a persons skin. This Election Moment is about Character.

THE CHARACTER FACTOR

A persons character, their thought process, their ability to lead, to change course, to admit their errors, to put in corrections, to adjust their course, to learn, grow, to be wrong, to have faith beyond one’s own faith and many more of these attributes is what we need as Americas next generation of leaders.

ONE QUESTION WILL REVEAL THE CHARACTER FACTOR

Will you abolish the failed forty seven (47) year old U.S. Embargo on Cuba?

It’s a yes or no question.

Any politician or person that still has to think about saying yes. Or is determined to maintain, tighten and enforce a U.S. Policy that has not worked for forty seven years clearly does not have The Character Factor.

YES IS THE ONLY ANSWER

Yes to abolishing the five decade old failed policy against Cuba is the only answer that will demonstrate a person’s character.

WHAT YOU CAN DO.

I ask that you include and ask this question to every politician you meet. Ask it on every blog you participate in. Make this election about the character factor of the person running for office.

JOHN McCAINS CHARACTER FACTOR

Ask McCain every chance you can. Why is he committed to continuing the embargo on Cuba that has not worked for forty seven years?

What does it say about McCain that he will not consider anything but enforcing a U.S. Policy that has not worked for almost five decades.

OBAMA HAS THE CHARACTER FACTOR

Obama is committed to new relationships with Cuba.

VOTE FOR CHARACTER

Lets make sure we bring to the forefront the number one issue an American should think of when they reach their personal Election Moment vote.

Am I voting for a person who has Character? In that one Election Moment, when an American goes to vote, we must trust that their Character factor will prevail above all else.

Summer reading

I picked up an advance copy of Norman Mailer's Miami and the Siege of Chicago, which is being re-issued this summer by NYRB Classics. There may be nothing better out there to give some historical perspective on the campaign this year. It makes you wish there were a Norman Mailer around to write about this year's campaign.

It also reminds you of how different political campaigns have become. The sixties was the end of the old era of political conventions, where the candidates used to make the rounds of the delegations trying to pick up some extra votes, as the outcome was not certain heading into the convention. Nowadays conventions are so stage-managed and choreographed they have lost most of their drama. They are infomercials for the party's candidates, really, and we will not tolerate the kind of uncertainty leading up to the convention that used to be taken for granted. We expect that the nominee will be selected by the voters, not the delegates. Not that these changes are bad necessarily, it's just interesting to be reminded how different our time is from the recent past.

And the story of the summer of 1968 reminds us of how tame politics has become. Even the Republican convention that year had some infighting. While Nixon had the nomination pretty well locked up before the convention, Rockefeller was hoping to get enough votes on the first ballot that he could turn the convention to him in a subsequent ballot. On the Democratic side, Humphrey went into the convention also with a comfortable lead, but knew that anything could happen that year. Eugene McCarthy still had enough loyal troops to cause trouble, though never enough to gain the nomination. George McGovern had just entered the race, trying to pick up all of the Bobby Kennedy delegates. There was a late movement to draft Teddy Kennedy into the race. In Mailer's view, Lyndon Johnson was behind the scenes the whole time, deliberately trying to split his party to preserve his legacy. And that was only the nomination fight. The real drama, with real blood flowing, of course took place on the streets outside the convention hall.

We think we have lived through an epic nomination battle this year? Compared to 1968, this was nothing.

Indiana

The last time the Indiana Democratic primary mattered was 1968, the year that Bobby Kennedy won it. Let's hope people in Indiana remember or can re-kindle the message of hope and reconciliation that Bobby Kennedy brought to Indiana. Kennedy flew to Indianapolis on April 4, 1968, the day that Martin Luther King was assassinated. Contrary to the advice of his staff and the police, he insisted on giving a speech in the black ghetto, where many people had not yet heard the terrible news. There he gave one of the most beautiful and poignant speeches of his career, including the words quoted in my profile. This was also one of the only times he spoke of his own feelings after his brother's assassination.

Not only did Bobby Kennedy win the Indiana primary, but Indianapolis was the only major city in America that did not have violent rioting in the wake of the King assassination. This year Barack Obama has the chance to keep the dream alive.

I saw NO press on what I thought was a brilliant statement by Obama during the Cleveland Debate on health care.

I want to put this out there, because it's WHY we're all fighting for this uniter.

suggesting that you get obama with clinton as president is as shameless as it gets.

I wouldn't be suprised to see placards at Clinton rallies enshrined with Barack's likeness and the word VP. It will be a tough call, but thankfully she has the judgement, determination and experience to recognize his unique qualifications to be VP.

all the while, she makes the case that he is unworthy to be Commander in Chief. certainly her picture must accompany the definition of hypocrisy.

any self-respecting democrat who really believes in change can not coalesce around such a candidate, unless of course, one believes there are relative degrees of hypocrisy.

I, for one, would rather opt to vote for nadar. After all, he's right to suggest the Democratic Party is bankrupt if they consider, let alone proceed with, private donor funded re-elections.

Stupor Delegates

This was intially written as a comment to a blog entry. I'm posting it as a stand alone thread under my own name. my apologies for any redundancy............

This link below is my open letter to super delegates. I sent it directly to undecided super delegates in California. A couple days later I received David Plouffe's Super Delegate action email and included this note as part of that Campaign Call.

It's imperative to note, as I subsequently learned, the campaign does not want the electorate to contact Super Delegates directly. Plouffe's letter was multi-fold; to ensure the Campaign and its supporter messages are not at odds; and to maintain Campaign control over the highly sensitive and discreet Super Delegate efforts - all the while, reigning in the activists and bringing these Hardballers into the fold through the illusion of inclusion.

I know this may sound cynical to some and I’m sorry.

I'm inclined to believe this because, in part, a Blog entry of mine which contained contact information for the Undecided California Super Delegates – in this case email and telephone numbers for DNC Members - was deleted without advance or subsequent notice. Poof, it disappeared.

This blog entry lived for three or so days – a couple before the Plouffe email and perhaps a day or two thereafter. While I very much understand the nature of this action (how can one prove to others you can control the government if you can’t even control your own supporters) and while I stand by my Super Delegate letter, it’s a major letdown to have the post deleted in this regard.

Moreover, they took away the points I received for posting a blog entry. At minimum, I should be allowed to keep those. Come on!

Health and Economic Fairness Starts at Home

Barack was recently criticized by the New York Times for taking up a fight as a Freshman Senator on behalf of his constituents and forcing Power companies to disclose leaks. He agreed to a revised bill, and isn't that what politics is after all - compromise - especially in light of power held by the tenured zealots and buffoons that dominate on behalf of corporate energy interests. In the process he gets labeled by the paper as weak because he deferred benchmark determination to be made by a regulating agency.

Unaffiliated Voters

To all those making phone calls this week: when you reach an unaffiliated or decline to state voter, it is very important to leave a message or tell them that they must request a Democratic ballot in order to cast a vote for President. (The Republican primary is closed to independents.) If they do not ASK for a Democratic ballot when they go to vote, they will be handed a decline to state ballot, which only allows them to vote on local issues, and does not allow them to vote in the presidential primary. It seems to me it is more important to tell people to ASK for a Democratic ballot, than to tell them anything else. Yes, some independents will vote for Clinton or Edwards, but most seem to support Obama. So when I leave phone messages for independent voters, I am telling them to make sure to vote on February 5, and to ASK for a Democratic ballot. Of course I also say I am supporting Obama, but it seems most important to make sure that people know they have to ask for a Democratic ballot on primary day.

California Republicans are breathing new life into an initiative that could have serious reverberations for the 2008 election. The Los Angeles Times reported today that conservatives are restarting a drive to place on the June ballot a measure that would change the way the state allots its 55 electoral votes.

The initiative would change California’s electoral voting from the standard winner - take-all — to winner-takes-district. It failed earlier this month when organizers dropped their primary financial backer, and couldn’t come up with the $2 million probably required to get the signatures to put it up for a vote.

Money isn’t a problem now, said political strategist David Gilliard to the L.A. Times. The San Jose Mercury News also reports that the $2 million sum is nearly in the bank.

As Jennifer Steinhauer first reported in The Times back on Aug. 11, the G.O.P. would gain a giant advantage if this measure passes. Since Republicans have 19 of California’s congressional seats, they could win some 20 electoral votes—the same number as, say, swing state Ohio.

The L.A. Times says several G.O.P. strategists confirmed that the drive is back on. Today’s buzz about a renewed ballot crusade was so great that Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party, released a statement about the alleged resurgence:

“Just in time for Halloween, phantom G.O.P. forces are attempting to bring the electoral power grab initiative back from the dead. The Republicans may mistakenly think that Californians have a short memory, but this latest crass attempt to rig the presidential election is downright insulting.”

The G.O.P. isn’t directly involved in the initiative, only Republican donors — not all of whom have been named. One of the leaders of the new drive is Anne Dunsmore, who until late September was the deputy finance manager for Rudolph W. Giuliani’s campaign, and then left the campaign. The first drive also was hampered by a $175,000 donation from Paul Singer, who has made significant contributions to Mr. Giuliani in the past.

Mr. Giuliani’s office denies any involvement with the issue. Still, Mr. Torres directed sharp words toward the former mayor:

“We know that Rudy Giuliani’s former top fundraiser is helping to lead the charge, which is no surprise given recent news reports tying Giuliani to the last effort. But who is the real driving force? Who is the Sugar Daddy funding the attempted revival? It’s time for the G.O.P. to show Californians the money.”

Republicans still have some leg work to do before the measure is put on the ballot. In addition to the $2 million, they need to collect hundreds of thousands of valid registered voter signatures before the mid-November deadline, reports the Sacramento Bee. But the Bee also says that conservatives might try to place the initiative on the November 2008 ballot if they can’t get enough signatures for June — and that if the measure passed on a November ballot, it could still apply to the November presidential vote.

Democrats are readying themselves for a fight.

“[California Democratic Party] Fraud Busters throughout California will once again spread the truth by going to locations where the Republicans are gathering signatures and will tell would-be signers the truth about this petition,” Mr. Torres said in the statement.

I had to take a work trip to New York and found (made) some time to attend the rally in NYC. C'est fantastique! I attended Obama's rally in LA this past February and I was inspired then to volunteer for his campaign. The NYC Rally was 10 times that! I thought he was great then and he's even better now! There is no stopping him! 24,000 people, thunderous applause, secret service and one spectacular and invigorating speech from Obama, our next POTUS! The most inspiring part of the rally was at the end when Obama led a call and response with 24,000 people chanting FIRED UP! and READY TO GO! I'm sure our enthusiasm echoed through the streets of Manhattan.

This is it, folks. It's up to us. We must each take on the responsiblity to get this man elected. Don't fall back in the shadows. It's time for the people of the United States of America to stand up and make an impact.

What a Weekend!!!

This past weekend, the volunteer team I work with hopped on the Obama-Bandwagon! Volunteers hosted House Parties, went to House Parties, organized Rallies and took a road trip to our neighboring early state, Nevada, to help out the campaign. I was one of those people who travelled to Las Vegas, and it was such a fulfilling experience. The staff had our weekend completely organized and our group of Los Angeles volunteers worked fervently out in the field to get supporters to sign caucus pledge cards. This is the first campaign I've ever volunteered for and I feel invigorated in supporting a candidte that I believe in whole-heartedly!

Obama sets Iowa afire
Anticipation was in the air for days in the Quad-Cities, but Davenport drummed up a big hit Saturday as fresh-faced Rock Island youth pounded rhythm in unison. So infectious was the phenomenon that many there, myself included, had to stand and stomp along. When Barack Obama entered the room and joined in the step clap cadence, the gymnasium caught fire.
Obama, once a skinny kid from the south side of Chicago, coming from humble roots and making it the American way, touches something deep inside us all. Those in Democratic circles count their blessings for his presence and quality as a candidate, while the other side of the aisle is confounded by his ability to transcend party lines. Non-participating voters become active again, all simply accomplished by an attitude of an honest fresh discussion with the public that somehow becomes a one-on-one conversation, even in a room of thousands.
Barack has what many desire yet few ever attain and many in his opposition fear: truthful integrity.

Life is confusing and Barack Obama is smart enough to admit that! I also do not understand everything, especially people that do not put their best foot forward. We all need to support each other! You should decide below what is fair or not!?!

'Until this morning that is when I received a blunt email that I could not attend either event because both were sold out and to let me in would create a "fire hazard." Obviously I am quite disappointed. I tried to find the person who made this decision to discuss the matter further even buy a ticket but was told that individual could not be identified. And under no circumstances could I attend.
I just extend to this to my "friends" as a cautionary tale to you do not face a comparable situation. If there is a fund raiser in your area with Barack attending especially and you want to be there whether you are selling tickets for the event or not, and whatever promises are made to you it is simpler and safer to buy a ticket and avoid such disappointments.'

recently, i made a blog post about a certain shirt featured on tshirthell.com. a pro-obama shirt. it has a picture of both hillary clinton and senator obama, and the caption states, "bros before hoes." i thought the shirt was hilarious, and i plan on ordering one as soon as possible.
however, that blog post has mysteriously disappeared.
this campaign appears to be watching, and censoring, blog posts on the site. while they are well within their rights to do so, i'm pretty much blown away. what the hell is the point of a blog if we can't post what we want? i'm kind of surprised that a campaign so concerned with the rights of the american people is censoring the blogs of its supporters. discuss, if you would be so kind.
also, dear censorer, if you are reading this, i'd kindly request that you leave it up. because i don't think that the senator we all want to be president approves of censorship. does he?

Every post has a button where people can report things that they think are objectionable. Whether or not it is is relative. In either case, politically, its probably a good thing that the Senator's site does not contain words that are commonly used to refer to women in a derogatory manner.

i don't think the shirt is calling hillary a hoe - that definitely isn't the point of it, anyway. the point of the shirt is to say, "support senator obama before you support senator clinton," and it's using a commonly heard phrase to express that notion, because using my aforementioned phrase wouldn't be nearly as funny or eye-catching. While your intent may be one thing, what is perceived by others is another. I agree that the shirt would not be as funny with another word, but there are other concerns. Because this is the Senator's site for the campaign, I don't know that it works to say just turn the page. People will view Obama as responsible for what is on the site. I just think that that kind of language, regardless of how it is normally used, only has the potential to hurt the campaign, albeit in a very small way. To the extent that someone takes offense, the campaign does not want to be viewed as being responsible for that.

We are still signing up new volunteers every Fri 12p @Zephyr (see 'Pasadena' under barackobama.com/groups. We're asking them to fill necessary spots within our other groups where experience is needed, and I'm still waiting to hear back from the rest of our GrassRoots Group. We also break deeper into grassroots groups to plan every Thurs 7p @ Zephyr.  We want to start a Tech group on the greassroots level to really upload a lot of Barack's speeches on YouTube etc.   When you look at 'Pasadena' events online, you may see BARACK OBAMA COAST-TO-COAST call in show, every Sat 12p PST. The instructions are online, and we use Skype Free Teleconferencing software. Please remind everyone that in two weeks, the 'Audacity of Hope Book Study Group' will also be meeting at Zephyr, every-other Thurs. nite for informal disc ussion about Barack's ideas, to educate ourselves and spread the word. We'd like to give away one book a week ($15) if someone with fundraising experience can help us work it out on a grassroots level. Some have suggested Half.com, etc., but your ideas are needed as well. As you can see with all going on, we are also looking for co-leaders for our sub groups. We are sharing all of our ideas with the main Admin group, Voter Reg group, Fundraising, and Event Planning. We should be able to set up some grassroots tables at Cal State LA, that Voter Reg will hopefully be able to man with extra staff. In the same vein, we've met contacts to give to Event Planning, possibly for a Barack book signing at Vromen's. So much more to come, as the LA Times, Mt. Wilson Observer, and other media contacts are interested in our excitement! Your leaders have also been asked to participate in a Pasadena Public Access roundtable to discuss issu es.
