Obama & HBCUs - The Real Truth without the Hoopla!

Just in case you had not heard the latest pile of manure that has been brewing about Obama and HBCUs. Here is a short piece by Essence Magazine's Cynthia Gordy that sheds much light and is certainly worth taking note of just in case you need some talking points.

OBAMA VS. HBCUS? LET'S REVIEW...

You may have heard grumbling this week about a funding cut for historically Black colleges in the 2010 federal budget. I've read the articles and outraged headlines, but held off on commenting until I’d taken a closer look at the budget myself. It seemed like there was some information missing.

The outcry is in response to the absence of $85 million in extra funding that has been given to historically Black colleges and universities for the past two years. This has been framed as a budget cut and, according to some critics, proof that “Obama doesn’t care about HBCUs.” One thing to note, however, is that this was a temporary two-year fund enacted by Congress in 2007, and already a done deal for 2010.

Rather than revisit the temporary idea of a pot of extra money for HBCUs, the administration instead increased spending in student aid. They also boosted direct discretionary funding for HBCUs from $238 million to $250 million. Now, the increase in direct discretionary funds isn’t much (especially when pitted against the $85 million that expired). But the administration argues that supporting students with more student aid—especially in the form of increasing the maximum Pell Grant for low-income students by $200, to a total allowance of $5,550—will help HBCUs.

“Half of students at historically Black colleges and universities receive Pell Grants, compared to 27 percent of students at other institutions,” Massie Ritsch, a spokesman with the U.S. Department of Education told me regarding the boost in student aid. "We expect that over 10 years, students at HBCUs will receive $3.2 billion in increased Pell Grants, an average of $320 million a year. That money will directly benefit HBCUs by making it easier for the students they serve to attend."

The budget also increases the need-based Perkins Loan by $5 billion, up from the current volume of $1 billion, and offers $2.5 billion for programs that help low-income students enroll in and graduate from college. “This shouldn’t be seen as any indication that there’s not support for historically Black colleges and universities,” Ritsch said. “The budget and the Recovery Act provide more money for the students that disproportionately attend HBCUs, and provide additional funds for the institutions themselves.”

I’m not saying this is necessarily the better way to do it, but it’s a far cry from the idea that Obama is effectively saying, “To hell with you, Black students!” Let me know what you think. Should the President renew the fund that gives money directly to HBCUs, or do you agree with his emphasis on increasing student aid that goes directly to minority students?

President-elect Barack Obama has solid American public support for the economic stimulus plan as proposed, according to the latest media polls.

However, when polling head to head with the United States Currency Board, there is a totally different sentiment.

The United States Currency Board is economic stimulus… economic recovery… economic stability… economic reinvestment… economic stability… economic security…

The United States Currency Board as a major institutional mechanism for producing credit debt loan payments on demand in proportion to consumer credit lending, is invaluable.

Central bank and commercial bank lending grows the base monetary supply. It does not produce the monetary payment for that credit lending. The United States Currency Board produces the monetary payment for all credit lending and grows the base monetary supply.

The United States Currency Board is the perfect compliment to the functions of the Central Bank; Federal Reserve Bank. Now is the time to institute this financial mechanism in the Keynesian macro-economic model for the United States economy.

For this reason the United States Currency Board is pursuing U.S. government grants and a portion of the remaining TARP money, as much as $50 billion dollars.

Where Are the African American Cabinet Appointees?

President Obama,

I sincerely appreciate the diversity in your cabinet. I think it demonstrates the various cultures of our country, and one of the main strengths of our democracy. I do think that most are very credible; but others do seem to be solely for the purpose of sensationalism. It is a very pragmatic step; however, I must take issue with the lack of African American's in high-level posts.

With all respect to you and all other communities, I think it's important to remind you and your team, how African Americans helped you make history. Please do not take us for granted:

* In South Carolina, when you were being belittled by the Clintons and chastised by Edwards; African Americans saw through the minuta andd gave you the benefit of a doubt. We demonstrated solidarity and gave you a game changing victory.

* Remember who delivered you the Democratic primaries in Georgia; Mississippi, Illnois, North Carolina, Texas, Missouri and Florida. This was all made possible by the historic grass roots efforts by the people that gave you that necessary edge.

* As proof of my previous assertions, voter turn-out among African Americans was greater now than ever in history. African Americans voted who had never voted before. Evidence of this is the number of elderly-centurians which you have personally given thanks.

* Finally, the monetary sacrifice made by African Americans like myself. We gave whenever we could and constantly pestered our friends and family to give as well. In a lagging economy where African Americans are often the first laid-off; we put our faith in you despite our current woes.

I want these sacrifices and contributions to be respected and acknowledged not only by words, but with the appointments of our brightest and best. Now is the time to show our excellance. I held my tongue with the appointment of Clinton, Gates. But now I believe the latest appointments seem to be more for sensationalism and undo Clintonian influence. If hommage is being given in this manner, then African American's deserve more of a say. By no means am I asking for token representation. Excellence and Competence are the mantras that should be exhibited and is the driving value of such appointees.

Where are the posts for General Honore', Dr. Ben Carson, Richard Parsons, AMA President Ronald Davis, Collin Powell, Henry Louis Gates, Mae Jemison, and Clifton Wharton. I think that at least 3 more African American high-level appointments are in order. Now in this historic time, a more deliberate effort should be made to highlight the extraordinary professionals produced by the African American community. This is your duty and obligation to those who fought the struggle for you to be where you are today. Acknowledge these efforts and openly show appreciation for the sacrifice and support by which you have benefited. In summary, I simply ask that you do right by us and give us a seat at the table.

The Problem with Roland Burris

There is nothing in the United States Constitution that allows the U. S. Senate the clear-cut capacity to deny Roland Burris the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama. Indeed, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich seemed to be thumbing his nose at all of Illinois, if not all of the United States, by appointing Burris. As best we can tell, Burris has a clean political record and has done nothing wrong. Yet Blagojevich seems well on his way to being convicted of attempting to sell Barack Obama’s former Senate seat to the highest bidder.

After Burris was denied access to the Senate chambers on Tuesday January 6, 2009, black pundits of every ilk came out of the woodwork to claim that denying Burris his Senate seat was a blatant attempt to prevent an African-American from becoming a member of the United States Senate. I watched former Georgia State Senator, a founder of SNCC, and former chair of the NAACP Julian Bond attempt to make a case for racism. This was one of his least convincing arguments. For a moment, I wanted to cry.

Bond likened the blockade of Burris to the U. S. Senate to the one Bond received in the state of Georgia back in 1966. I was in kindergarten when a very young and dashing Julian Bond was denied admittance and acceptance to the Georgia State Senate because he had dared to speak out against the Vietnam War. He was bold, defiant; and he was right. Later in 1966 the Supreme Court ruled that the Georgia House of Representatives had denied Bond his right to freedom of speech, and further ordered Georgia’s House of Representatives to seat him. He took his seat in Georgia's House of Representatives in early 1967. Everyone in the state of Georgia and America were the better for it. Today Bond suggested that House Democrats surely must have considered that it might look racist to deny Burris entry to the Senate. I wanted to scream.

There is no evidence that Roland Burris is anything other than an upstanding and highly experienced public servant. What no one, including Julian Bond, seems to want to ask is why Burris would accept an appointment from a governor that has so clearly and blatantly violated the public trust? Why would Burris accept such an appointment from a governor who has refused to step down when propriety and decency demands that the people of Illinois would be best served if he did so? Burris cannot be ignorant of the evidence stacked against Blagojevich, even if Blagojevich has yet to be tried and convicted of his crimes.

It appears that some compromise between Burris and House Democrats has been reached. It appears he will be seated. However, he was not initially denied entry to the Senate because he is black; he was chosen by Blagojevich precisely because he was black and a member of a dying breed of black politician. In vulgar arrogance, Blagojevich knew he could count on old-guard black politicians to yell racism should Burris’ appointment be questioned; this is why he chose a 71-year-old Burris, rather than a younger, less-Illinois-politics-tethered individual to fill Obama’s vacant Senate seat. Many members of the black old-guard are proud of Obama. Yet far too many of them are scrambling for political capital and social relevancy as many of them erroneously hitched their political wagons to a Clinton nomination and presidency in the mistaken belief that a person with African ancestry could never occupy the highest office in the land. The old guard clings to an era that has passed and arguments that have long since lost any semblance of validity.

I fondly remember a young Julian Bond winning election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965. He was finally seated in 1966. I was proud of his actions then. Racism was blatant and visceral then; it is real, visceral, but often more inconspicuous now. An Obama presidency will not eliminate racism; he cannot make racism less severe. Yet Obama’s election will make confronting issues of race, racism, and race-baiting more complex; this is precisely why it is important to remember the lessons of the mid-1960s without confusing them with the lessons of 2009.

I saw those tacky loud ghetto burlap bag grandma jello pudding pop designs the "top" designers are trying to stuff her in for the Inaugural Ball and none of them fit the styles I've seen her wear yet.

I've seen her in classic, elegant, sophisticated (unless she's doing J Targete casual) and those designers have got the "slave-motif" going on. They didn't put a lot of thought into what they've seen her wear.

I've observed and when I was a little girl I wanted to BE a fashion designer and interior decorator. Therefore I give my Unsung and Unasked For opinion. NONE of those gowns work.

So, I give you...

I call it Understated Drama with Pearls

How lame can our lame duck President get? How about pardoning war criminals before they get their day in court. Write your local paper today.

We all want to move on.

But just this past Friday, a bipartisan Senate report named Secretary Rumsfeld and other top officials directly responsible for sanctioning torture. Rumors in DC are that Bush will pardon Rumsfeld and others for these abuses.1

After eight years of defiling America's reputation and renouncing our founding principles, the Bush administration wants to jet off into the sunset without answering to the American public.

We can't let that happen. You and I have an important role to play as our nation's conscience.

Write your local paper and denounce any possible planned pardons for crimes committed in the "war on terror". Here are some sample letters and talking points you can follow.

America's renewal depends on a recommitment to human rights. And that recommitment starts by investigating past abuses and holding officials accountable. It's called justice, and the rule of law. And it's something our nation once held in high regard.

Write your local paper. And remember to register to participate in our inauguration day of action and our 100 days events. Your letter to the editor would support Senators that are starting to push for accountability. Senator Feingold just last week wrote President-elect Obama asking for a "detailed accounting of what happened over the last eight years" and that "we must fully understand the mistakes of the past in order to learn from them… and prevent them from recurring." 2

A record number of pardon seekers have flooded the White House. Some believe Bush may issue pre-emptive pardons that would abdicate anyone remotely connected to so-called "alternative interrogation techniques" (otherwise known as torture). Any such pardon would undermine any future efforts to seek and find justice for the past eight years of human rights abuses in the "war on terror".

Write your local paper and express your outrage over the possibility of impunity for crimes committed in the "war on terror".

One of our three main objectives during President-elect Obama's 100 days is to ensure an independent commission investigates abuses committed the U.S. government in its "war on terror". Pardoning key officials, or even worse, issuing a blanket pardon, would undermine this critical goal towards restoring our commitment to human rights.

We're all ready to move forward. But our best chance of restoring the America we believe in means starting off with justice and accountability.

Take a few minutes to write your local paper.

Be Mindful as we Enter the New Year

Mindfulness - How to Achieve It

December 10, 2008

Being mindful does not come naturally to most people. It is actually a skill that needs to be practiced and one that can greatly improve the quality of your life. Meditation is one path to learning to be mindful as are certain types of exercise, such as Yoga, that force us to be in the moment. Our mind wanders, this is natural but we can bring it back to the present with some effort and focused attention.

An exercise to help you to be Mindful is as follows: Take a walk outside, alone or with someone else, and do not say one word. Be in total and complete quiet. Notice your surroundings in great detail. Pay attention to the sights and sounds around you, the smells in the air, the feeling of your clothes on your skin and your feet on the ground. Notice what different parts of your body feel like, even if you are noticing discomfort. Notice your breathing. When thoughts of your day or things you need to tend to move into your consciousness, notice them and let them go. Don't judge yourself for becoming distracted, accept it as part of the process and get back to focusing on your sensory awareness. Do this exercise for at least 20 minutes as often as you can.

The more you practice, the better you will become at clearing your mind. It is not unlike a muscle that needs to be exercised. You can try being mindful in small ways as well such as when you are eating. Take a bite of food and pay close attention to the process as you chew. What does it feel like in your mouth, what tastes do you notice most - sweet, sour, bitter? Notice the texture as you chew and swallow.

There are many other small exercises you can do to practice being mindful so whenever you get a chance, do them. Mindfulness has been shown to be useful for a variety of mental health and physical health conditions such as anxiety, depression, hypertension, and infertility among many others.

The basic structure of the currency board for the American Working Class will generate liquidity to the community banking sector.

It is specifically designed for the liquid cash money supply called M1: narrow money – cash money of paper and coin, in general circulation of the United States economy.

The term filibuster -- from a Dutch word meaning "pirate" -- became popular in the 1850s, when it was applied to efforts to hold the Senate floor in order to prevent a vote on a bill. An attempt is made to infinitely extend debate upon a proposal in order to delay the progress or completely prevent a vote on the proposal taking place.The term 'filibuster' was first used in 1851. It was derived from the Spanish filibustero meaning 'pirate' or 'freebooter'. This term had in turn evolved from the French word flibustier, which itself evolved from the Dutch vrijbuiter (freebooter). In the early years of Congress, representatives as well as senators could filibuster. As the House of Representatives grew in numbers, however, revisions to the House rules limited debate. In the smaller Senate, unlimited debate continued on the grounds that any senator should have the right to speak as long as necessary on any issue. On March 8, 1917, in a specially called session of the 65th Congress, the Senate adopted a rule adopted a rule (Rule 22), a device known as "cloture" at the urging President Woodrow Wilson, that essentially preserved its tradition of unlimited debate. The rule required a two-thirds majority to end debate and permitted each member to speak for an additional hour after that before voting on final passage. In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds to three-fifths, or sixty of the current one hundred senators.
