This Thanksgiving, Jonathan and I have much for which to be thankful:

We are thankful for you, our volunteers. We are thankful for your tireless efforts slightly more than a year ago to elect Barack Obama as President. And we are especially thankful for your on-going support of health insurance reform.

Because of all you do, this Thanksgiving Jonathan and I are sending you a warm and heartfelt, “Thank you.” Your work has made real change possible in Alaska and across the United States.

Now that we are moving into the crucial stages of passing health insurance reform, we need you more than ever. Please join with other Alaskans who have committed to doubling their efforts for ensuring that health insurance reform passes by calling our members of Congress, writing letters to the editor, and taking other urgent actions.

Part 3: Pursuing the American Dream

In the two previous postings, we've seen how Alaskan small business owners try to cope with or eventually crash because rising health care costs impact their business's bottom line. This struggle cannot go on any longer. Enacting health insurance reform helps Americans who own or want to start small businesses.

So what is health reform going to do for small businesses?

President Obama and several members in Congress have listened to us and thought long and hard about what the best ways are to guarantee that small businesses have quality, affordable, secure, and stable coverage. As a result, reform will help small businesses by:

Setting up an exchange that pools small businesses - gaining additional leverage to get better deals.
Offering tax credits to make insurance more affordable for millions of small businesses.
Expanding coverage for millions more Americans thereby eliminating the hidden tax of more than $1,000 that workers currently pay to cover the medical expenses of the uninsured.
Cracking down on insurance industry’s worst practices – like raising prices for an entire business because one of its workers gets sick, capping the amount of coverage consumers can receive in a year or lifetime, denying coverage because of a pre-existing condition, or dropping or watering down coverage when someone gets sick and needs it most.

Health insurance reform helps people like Alex and all the thousands of other small business owners and employees and families in Alaska. We cannot afford to wait for health insurance reform any longer.

Congressman Young chose not to vote for the House version of the health insurance reform bill. But he can still make that wrong right. Call Congressman Young now and ask him to do something that helps Alaskan small businesses: Ask him to vote for the final Health Insurance Reform Legislation.

As exciting as it is that a majority of members of the House passed their health insurance reform bill, we still have more to do. We need you now more than ever. We need to get a filibuster-proof bill through the Senate. We need to see the Senate bill combined with the House bill so that the House and the Senate can vote on the same bill. How do you help make all this happen? It's simple.

Call Senator Begich, Senator Murkowski, and Congressman Young TODAY and let them know you want them to help Alaska, our small businesses, and our families by voting for health insurance reform.

When we work together, we can achieve the American dream.

Part 2: Pursuing the American Dream

Alaskans want to pursue the American dream, and they shouldn't have to choose between starting a business and keeping their health insurance.

Alaskan small business owners and employees know - and we know - that they play a crucial role as job-providers and community-builders in Alaska. In fact, there are a quarter million private-sector jobs in Alaska, and approximately half of these jobs are at businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

However, in Alaska, 75% of small businesses do not offer health insurance coverage. This means that any full-time employee working for a small business runs a 3 out of 4 chance that she will not be provided employer-based health insurance.

This is an unnecessary hardship for Alaska's small businesses and all the people whose lives they touch. But the small business owners in Alaska still want to do the right thing. I hear the same statement over and over from them:

"I want to do the right thing. I want to offer my employees health coverage."

But the sad truth is that they often cannot. They know it's the right thing to do, and they also know that when their employees thrive, their companies thrive.

So why is it so hard for Alaskan small businesses to offer health insurance and to compete with big businesses?

Small businesses pay 18% more than larger businesses for the same health insurance plan, and 26 cents out of every dollar they pay into health insurance goes to paying for things like executive compensation, bonuses, marketing, and paperwork.

To make matters worse, because health care is so expensive for Alaskan small businesses, Alaska's premiums have increased by 145% in the past ten years. This hurts our economy. Instead of supporting small businesses, Alaskans are often pushed toward buying products from the big businesses. When we buy from big businesses, money is siphoned out of Alaska and our hard-earned money is used to subsidize the economic growth of other states.

Alaskans deserve better than this. You can do something to help make sure that small businesses stay strong in Alaska. Write a letter to the editor explaining how small businesses impact your life and why health reform will make them stronger.

Supporting health reform means supporting Alaska’s small businesses.

Part 1: Pursuing the American Dream

When Alaskans dare to pursue the American dream, they face the question:

"Should I start my own business, or should I keep my job that has health benefits?"

Alaskan small business owners know that the cost of health care is unaffordable. Not only do the owners and the employees pay huge premiums, but the small businesses have a hard time growing and competing with big businesses.

Watch Alex K., a small-business owner in Anchorage, talk about her experiences struggling to expand her business because she does not have access to affordable, quality insurance.

Like Alex, you may be the person who works for a small business but do not have access to affordable, quality health care. Or maybe it's your child or your friend. Or maybe you are an Alaskan who has seen one of our treasured small businesses close their doors because they simply can't compete with another new big business. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, one thing is certain:

We need Senator Begich, Senator Murkowski, and Congressman Young to support Alaskans by voting “yes” on the health reform legislation.

Health insurance reform will make it easier for small businesses to compete with big businesses, to offer health insurance benefits for their employees, and to grow their businesses - all of which help Alaskans.

So how can you help? Call the members of Congress and tell them your story.

Will This Halloween Bring Health Care Tricks or Treats for Alaskans?

As Alaskans know too well, when Halloween comes around, it usually means we’ve entered into winter – with nights that are cold, streets that are slippery, and snow that is piling up. Trick-or-treating in these conditions can certainly be challenging, but it hardly ever stops us from going out to celebrate the day dedicated to spooky, sugary fun!

But as frightening as a blustery Alaskan Halloween night is, I still have to ask:

What can be spookier this Halloween than the current state of health care in America?

Nothing that I can think of.

Alaskans know how scary it is to pay for the increasing costs for health insurance.

•   Currently, more than 133,000 Alaskans are uninsured.
•   Alaskans who are insured shoulder a hidden health tax of roughly $1,900 per year on premiums as a direct result of subsidizing the cost of the uninsured.
•   19% of middle-class Alaskan families pay more than 10% of their income on health care.
•   Even high-income households in Alaska are affected with more than 14,000 lacking insurance.

That is why this Halloween, Organizing for America is asking every Alaskan who supports President Obama’s Health Reform Plan – whether you live in Sitka, Wasilla, North Pole, or Barrow – to join with other Alaskans in a…

Healthy Halloween Reverse Canvass!

It’s easy. It’s fun. It’s unique. And most importantly, it gets the word out to your neighbors that health reform helps all Alaskan families.

So how do you participate in OFA’s Healthy Halloween Reverse Canvass?

Instead of going door-to-door, simply let the people come to you! When the trick-or-treaters knock, here’s what you do:

•   Give each trick-or-treater a flier about President Obama’s Health Reform Plan and a “Health Reform NOW” sticker.
•   If the parent is with child and they tell you they support the health reform, ask them to show their support by signing their name on an OFA pledge sheet and then you can even give them a Health Care ‘09 bumper sticker with the Obama logo!
•   Don’t forget to give them a healthy snack too as a way to remind them about how important health reform is!
•   As Halloween approaches, show you’re a supporter of health reform by carving a special Obama-themed pumpkin to set out on your porch. Click here for some ideas!

The Linchpin to Our Success -- YOU!

Community Organizers are the foundation of Organizing for America, not only around the country but here in Alaska too. These people fill a vital role within OFA’s structure by building and expanding volunteer leadership and activities in their part of town to support President Obama’s policy agenda.

This week I got to sit down with Karolina Bednarska, a 25 year-old from Anchorage, to get her thoughts on why she got involved in OFA and then decided to sign-up to be a Community Organizer.

First, Karolina, tell me a little bit about yourself.

I work for a small, local business here in Anchorage, primarily in the field of marketing and database analysis. I would describe myself as a quirky, passionate, and intelligent young female who is interested now – more than ever – how I can contribute to my community on both large and small scales.

What are some of the issues that matter most to you and why?

Right now, health insurance reform is the most important issue for me, as it is with many Americans. The more I get involved and become more educated about the issue, the more determined I am that we need major changes in our current health care system. It's not a system that benefits everyone, but only those that seem privileged enough to afford it. I don't believe at all that this is a fair system.

Can you give me a sense about how long have you been involved in something Obama-related – whether with the Obama campaign in 2008 or OFA-Alaska?

Does reading about President Obama a lot count? (At this point, Karolina laughs.)
Seriously though, I just recently became involved with OFA on a committed-volunteer basis – I guess it’s been about two months now. I followed the Obama campaign closely but never really thought about volunteering. Watch Karolina talk about volunteering with OFA.
For me, going from not really knowing about OFA, to volunteering with you all, to being a Community Organizer went something like this:
After Alex (a mutual friend) introduced us and we chatted about some current political issues and grassroots organizing, I really felt like I needed to find out more about OFA. So I decided to “friend” OFA-Alaska on Facebook. About a week later, I saw you guys were having a training on health insurance reform and decided to go. I guess that training is ultimately what sold me on getting involved in a large-scale capacity.

Sometimes people who want to get involved with OFA feel like they don’t know much about volunteering or worry that they don’t know how to talk to other Alaskans about political issues. What would you say to them and what tips have you gotten that make your efforts successful?

I really like the way OFA focuses on individual neighborhoods. It makes it easier to talk to people because you are talking to people who live near you. Somehow that just makes it feel more comfortable. Then, as I meet other individuals from my part of town who support President Obama and his goals, it feels like together we can contribute to and work on the changes that need to take place if we are going to get health insurance reform – and also if we are going to stand up for President Obama's vision for change for the US.

OFA really gives people an outlet where they can have a voice on issues. If you want to be heard, volunteering with OFA is the best way to go. They suggest things you can do to make your voice heard and help you feel prepared to talk to other Alaskans – whether they are neighbors or our members of Congress – about health insurance reform.

Alaskan Doctor Visits White House

Doctors from all 50 states gathered together at the White House yesterday for an event to show their support for health insurance reform. Alaska was fortunate to have three health care professionals represent us at the discussion with the President, and one of the doctors invited is a committed and active volunteer with our Organizing for America team.

Dr. Monique Karaganis, a pediatrician and the small-business owner of Polar Pediatrics, was invited to join 150 other doctors for the event with President Obama in the Rose Garden on Monday, October 5. To read an interview with Monique, click here.

Monique, like most Alaskans, knows that paying for sky-rocketing health care costs and finding a doctor in Alaska are not easy tasks. Over the last decade, when compared to the other 49 states, Alaskan families saw the greatest rate of increase for their health insurance premiums.

Our wages increased by only 35%, but our families’ health insurance premiums increased by 145%.

Let me put it another way: As an Alaskan, for every extra dollar you earn, you have to pay three more dollars for your family's health insurance premium.

We had a chance to catch up with Monique while she was in Phoenix, boarding a flight back to Anchorage. She told us all about her visit to the White House.

Tell us a little bit about your visit. When did you find out you were going? When did you arrive? Had you been to Washington, D.C. before?

I was invited and confirmed to attend just on Friday, but I didn't get to D.C. until 7 am this morning.
When I arrived at the White House, I was admitted through the Visitor's Gate, and the Secret Service greeted me and took me on a private tour of the White House, which was amazing. President Obama talked to us at 11:00. It was incredible to be one of a few people who got to hear the President talk about health insurance reform. I know that as a doctor, as an Alaskan, and as an American it was exciting to be there with other doctors who support President Obama's Health Reform Plan. This issue is so important to so many Americans -- and it’s as important to me as a doctor in Alaska.
I wish I could have stayed longer because I've only been to Washington, D.C. once before when I was in high school. Pretty much right after the event at the White House, I had to head back to the airport to catch the long flight back home to Anchorage.

Of course, we’re all excited to hear that a fellow-Alaskan got to go to the White House. So the obvious question is: Did you get to speak with the President or any other noteworthy person?

No, unfortunately I did not get to meet President Obama. But I did get to talk to a lot of other amazing doctors.

In your conversations with other doctors, what was one of the most compelling reasons you heard about why we need health reform now?

Interesting enough, the reason I couldn't go to the White House until Monday morning was because I am the pediatrician for a new set of twins whose family had serious problems with their insurance company as they were trying to get care for their new babies. Additionally, when I took a taxi to the airport, even my cabdriver told me about his problems with getting health care.
I know I have story after story -- like each doctor at the White House and doctors all over the US -- about patients struggling to get the health care they need. I think every person knows their reasons for why Americans need health reform, and your reasons are as good as mine.

As you come back to Alaska from this meeting, what do you think is the most critical thing Alaskans can do to get real reform?

I've been a supporter of health reform for a long time, and I think President Obama's plan to fix the broken system is the best I've seen. I believe that every Alaskan needs to continue having conversations about what real health reform will do for our state and even more importantly our own families. As more and more people become aware that we each know someone harmed by the current system and that our President has a plan, supporters of health reform need to take bigger steps to talk to other Alaskans and tell Senator Begich, Senator Murkowski, and Congressman Young that we want real health insurance reform passed this year.

Like Monique said, the best thing Alaskans can do to get health reform that helps Alaskans get quality, affordable health care is to call Senator Begich, Senator Murkowski, and Congressman Young. Make your voice heard NOW and let your members of Congress know that you support real health reform.

Alaska Kicks Off Its Blog...and We Want Your Thoughts!

I always appreciate when people are direct with me. In fact, I think this is one of the reasons that I love Alaska so much. During my time living in Alaska - and especially working in Alaskan politics - I've realized that all Alaskans have at least one thing in common:

Alaskans like straightforwardness.

We appreciate when we get what we expect - whether it's from a person, a news source, or an organization. Here in Alaska, Organizing for America intends to give YOU just that: straightforwardness.

When you visit this blog or when you talk to me, Jonathan, or one of our amazing Organizing for America's volunteers, you can expect that we will give you up-to-date, clear information about how you can join with other Alaskans to talk to your neighbors and your members of Congress about the issues that matter most to you, such as health insurance reform.

Jonathan Teeters, Alaska's State Director for Organizing for America, works hard to hear from and respond to the concerns of all Alaskans.

I've been lucky enough to work as an organizer with Alaskans for about 5 years. What I've learned is that most people want to have a voice in these important discussions and a hand in shaping the outcomes.

Since Inauguration Day, Organizing for America has been dedicated to making real the change we fought for during the election. But to be successful, we need to hear from you -- your effort and commitment are the backbone of this movement and this organization.

That's why I'm so excited to announce that we're back on the ground in Alaska, and starting tomorrow, May 14th, we'll be hosting Listening Tour Town Halls across the state.

Will you make your voice heard and join us on the Listening Tour?

At Listening Tour meetings, you'll get a chance to meet new state staff members, hear about some lessons learned during the general election, and offer your thoughts on how we can organize Alaska going forward. GOTV Calling Update

Right now, while volunteers work to Get Out The Vote in key states, thousands of grassroots supporters across the country are helping out from home by using our online voter contact tools to call voters.

Our target today is to make 1,000,000 calls to voters in battleground states before the close of polls tonight. As of 1:00 PM Eastern, we've made 214,187 calls. However, our staff on the ground are telling us that we need to reach the 500,000 call mark by 3:00 PM Eastern Time.

These calls provide our supporters with information about when, where and how to vote today, and by helping identify which voters have already cast a ballot, we can dramatically reduce the number of houses our volunteers on the ground need to reach before polls close.

If you have even thirty minutes to spare in the next three hours, when can use your help. Simply select the state you want to call from the map below, and we'll provide you with an easy to use script and a targeted list of voters to call.

The largest voter contact operation ever attempted is underway right now. This is your chance to be part of it.

In Alaska, polls are open today from 7:00 AM until 8:00 PM local time. Anyone who is in line by 7:00 PM will be allowed to vote. You can find your polling location now.

For additional information or for any issues you may have with voting visit our Voter Information Center or call 1-877-US-4-OBAMA (877-874-6226). Answers to some of the most common voting questions are below:

Do I need to bring ID with me when I go vote?

On Election Day, all voters must provide one of the following forms of proof of identification:

Alaska voter ID card, driver’s license, state identification card, current and valid photo identification, birth certificate, passport, or hunting or fishing license; or
a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other government document with your name and address

What time will the polls be open on November 4?

7:00 am–8:00 pm

What about voters with disabilities?

If you are a qualified voter who is disabled, you may apply for an absentee ballot through a personal representative who can bring the ballot to you.

The personal representative brings the completed application to an election official for a ballot and takes the ballot to you.
You complete a certificate authorizing the personal representative to carry your ballot, vote the ballot privately, place it in a secrecy sleeve and seal it inside the envelope provided.
The personal representative must bring the voted ballot back to the election official by 8 pm on election day.

Voters with disabilities can bring someone to help at the polls. The division of elections has a TTY communication device for the hearing impaired, magnifying ballot viewers at the polling places and audio recordings of the general election official election pamphlet for the visually impaired, and handicapped accessible polling places.

Jonathan Curley is a banker. He voted for George H.W. Bush twice and George W. Bush once. Here's an excerpt from his story on canvassing for the Obama campaign in North Carolina, from the Christian Science Monitor:

There has been a lot of speculation that Barack Obama might win the election due to his better "ground game" and superior campaign organization.

I had the chance to view that organization up close this month when I canvassed for him. I'm not sure I learned much about his chances, but I learned a lot about myself and about this election.
Let me make it clear: I'm pretty conservative. I grew up in the suburbs. I voted for George H.W. Bush twice, and his son once. I was disappointed when Bill Clinton won, and disappointed he couldn't run again.
...So you can imagine my surprise when my wife suggested we spend a Saturday morning canvassing for Obama. I have never canvassed for any candidate. But I did, of course, what most middle-aged married men do: what I was told.
At the Obama headquarters, we stood in a group to receive our instructions. I wasn't the oldest, but close, and the youngest was maybe in high school. I watched a campaign organizer match up a young black man who looked to be college age with a white guy about my age to canvas together. It should not have been a big thing, but the beauty of the image did not escape me.

Instead of walking the tree-lined streets near our home, my wife and I were instructed to canvass a housing project. A middle-aged white couple with clipboards could not look more out of place in this predominantly black neighborhood.
We knocked on doors and voices from behind carefully locked doors shouted, "Who is it?"
"We're from the Obama campaign," we'd answer. And just like that doors opened and folks with wide smiles came out on the porch to talk.

Grandmothers kept one hand on their grandchildren and made sure they had all the information they needed for their son or daughter to vote for the first time.
...We knocked on every door we could find and checked off every name on our list. We did our job, but Obama may not have been the one who got the most out of the day's work.
I learned in just those three hours that this election is not about what we think of as the "big things."

... I've learned that this election is about the heart of America. It's about the young people who are losing hope and the old people who have been forgotten. It's about those who have worked all their lives and never fully realized the promise of America, but see that promise for their grandchildren in Barack Obama. The poor see a chance, when they often have few. I saw hope in the eyes and faces in those doorways.
My wife and I went out last weekend to knock on more doors. But this time, not because it was her idea. I don't know what it's going to do for the Obama campaign, but it's doing a lot for me.

We've reached the most important days of this entire campaign.

All of the voters we've registered, phone calls we've made, doors we've knocked on, friends and neighbors we spread the word to over the course of this campaign have brought us to where we are today: making Barack Obama very compettive in the race for the presidency of the United States.

Now we have to make sure all of that time and effort doesn't go to waste. It's time to once again take change into our own hands and get out the vote (GOTV).

As Barack explained in Nevada this morning:

Don’t believe for a second this election is over. Don’t think for a minute that power concedes. We have to work like our future depends on it in these last few days, because it does.

Join millions of Americans all over the country by volunteering in the last four days of this campaign. Everything we have worked for over the past 20 months will come down to what we do -- or don't do -- to help get out the vote.

Miss Laura from the DailyKos offered these words of wisdom from a veteran volunteer:

Before you hit your first door, or dial your first number...think about why you're doing it. Maybe it's your loved one in Iraq. Maybe it's wanting a Supreme Court that will preserve your right to control your own body. Maybe it's the healthcare you need and can't afford.
Take a piece of paper and a pen and write your reason down. Keep it in your pocket, and if you have a hard conversation or string of them, take that piece of paper out of your pocket and read it. Remind yourself that this is not an empty chore, it's a way to something really, really important. Carry that knowledge with you to each door or each dial.

So what can you do? Find a volunteer event near you and sign up to help between now and Election Day.

Alaska Call Team - 907 Calls to Go

The Alaska Call Team has set a goal of making 1,600 calls into Nevada and Colorado this week between October 24th and October 31st, and today we have the second progress report. As of this writing on October 27 at 4:00 PM Alaska Time, nearly 693 calls have been logged, putting us a little behind course to meet the original target, showing the importance of the remaining days.

The most important thing to focus on now is the task at hand, to make sure we give all we can to get in these last few days.

If you haven't started yet, it's not too late. The Neighbor to Neighbor phonebanking tool allows anyone to get involved without any previous experience. It just takes a few minutes to set up and get started calling. You'll be provided with lists of voters and a call script. Watch this instructional video on how to use the make calls from home, or you can join an organized event and enjoy the company of other supporters.

Alaska Call Team - Saturday Night Progress Report

The Alaska Call Team has set a goal of making 1,600 calls into Colorado and Nevada between October 24th and the 31st, and today we have a progress report. As of this writing on October 24 at 3:30 PM PDT, 274 calls have been logged, with a busy weekend of calling ahead. All together over 7,500 calls have been made by this team of dedicated grassroots supporters from every corner of the state.

The most important thing to remember now is to not let-up. The past 20 months of hard work by millions of Americans comes down to these last few crucial days. The goal is 1,600 calls, and Alaska should strive to shatter that goal to show that this election is too important to leave to chance.

One of the newest features of our Neighbor to Neighbor voter contact system is the online phonebanking tool. During the primary, thousands of supporters used our old online calling system to make literally millions of phone calls that made the difference in hard fought primaries across the country. In November, these phone calls will once again be a key part of our strategy.

Here is a quick tour of the new phonebanking tool:

The phonebanking tool provides you with lists of targeted voters in your community, a brief calling script, and an easy interface to enter your results. You can print off call lists and make calls offline, or you can make calls while at your computer.

When you’re done calling, report your results back to the campaign so we can update the system and let our staff and volunteers on the ground know where are supporters are and who needs more information.

In the coming days, we'll be adding more features and more calling campaigns that will allow you to make calls to key battleground states. In some areas, you'll be able to make peer to peer phone calls to talk to students, veterans, women, Latinos, and other important groups. Alaskan student met "Backstage with Barack" at the DNC

In August, the Obama campaign selected ten supporters to go “Backstage with Barack” at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Holly Miowak Stebing of Anchorage was one of the ten voters selected. Holly is a 20-year-old Alaska Native (Inupiaq) student. She is passionate about increasing Native American participation in government and has been active in registering community members in Anchorage and throughout the state. This past summer, Holly traveled across Alaska to interview Native American elders about their experiences with the federal government. Holly is excited about Barack Obama’s candidacy because he represents change and she relates to his humble beginnings. Holly attended two days of convention activities including a private meeting with Senator Obama before his historic speech at Invesco Field in Denver on Thursday, August 28th.

Women Back Obama-Biden on the Issues

While John McCain has been distracting from the issues at hand with the sleaziest campaign Americans have ever seen, Barack Obama and Joe Biden are traveling the country discussing the issues that women and families care about, such as ensuring women are paid the same as men for equal work, the right for women to make their own family planning choices, reforming our health care system, and rebuilding an economy that strengthens the middle class.

This week the Obama campaign is highlighting the stark differences between McCain-Palin and Obama-Biden on the issues women and families care about with events across the country and new advertising. A new ad - called “Burden” - highlights John McCain’s failure to stand up for equal pay for women at a time when more and more families depend on the income earned by working women.

The ad will air in key battleground states on Tuesday and DC/Northern VA markets. The ad will run during programming with large female audiences, including morning shows, soap operas, daytime TV, cable channels like Lifetime, Oxygen, E!, HGTV, and Bravo and during the fall premieres of several prime time shows. There will be a companion radio spot that goes up on Tuesday that will be in similar markets and a web ad appearing on sites that women frequent such as iVillage and magazine sites.

To kick-off the week of activities, the Obama campaign announced an impressive list of national women leaders who stand with the Obama–Biden ticket because of their record of fighting for women and families and the change they will bring to all Americans. On Tuesday the National Organization for Women and Feminist Majority endorsed the Obama-Biden ticket for the change women need.

On Wednesday, the Obama-Biden campaign received the endorsement of Lilly Lebetter at an event with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden in Virginia. On Wednesday night, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton will participate in one of the largest women’s web forums, reaching tens of thousands of women in their living rooms.

On Friday, Barack Obama, Joe Biden & Jill Biden will hold women’s rallies in battleground states and over the weekend women leaders will be joining with Obama supporters to hold Women for the Change We Need events in all 50 states.

There’s a reason why 53% of women voters believe that Obama-Biden better understands the issues and concerns important to women, compared to 35% for McCain-Palin, according to a September poll for Emily’s List. While Obama and Biden have a record of fighting to strengthen families and provide women with the rights and support they deserve, John McCain and Sarah Palin offer just more of the same.

Time to roll up our sleeves

In Alaska, we don't usually feel like we can make a difference in Presidential elections. The races haven't been close since statehood, decades ago, and thanks to the time zones the result is usually decided before we've finished voting.

A woman I met at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer last week said that when she was waiting to vote in 1980, President Carter had already conceded the race. People in line were joking about whether they should vote for the winner or the runner-up.

It's different this year. The race is close both nationwide and also in Alaska. This year, the folks on the East Coast might have to stay up all night waiting to see which way Alaskans vote. We need to be ready to win Alaska for Obama and Biden when that time comes.

This election isn't just in the hands of Barack and Joe -- it's in your hands. Hillary Clinton couldn't have said it better this week: "None of us can afford to sit on the sidelines."

NOME, Alaska -- Blueberries and silver salmon were on the minds of Inupiat Eskimo artist Norbert Thomas and his friend as they sat on the beach in Nome.
Barack Obama was not.
"I haven't heard much about it, 99 percent of us stay away from the TV," said Thomas, deftly carving a piece of driftwood into a face. "The silvers are in and it's berry-picking time."
Many residents of Nome, the famous Gold Rush town of about 3,500 on the Bering Sea, feel the same way. even as Democrats gather in Denver to nominate Obama president. Residents say no presidential campaign has ever reached out to Nome or the much smaller Alaska Native villages and other rural outposts that make up the "bush" of Alaska's vast, largely roadless expanse.
But in a bid to become only the second Democratic presidential candidate ever to win the state, Obama has launched an "Alaska Bush Field campaign" to garner votes in remote villages accessible only by air or river. The campaign was launched in Barrow, North America's northernmost town on frozen tundra abutting the Arctic Ocean, in a roller rink last Thursday.

Thousands of Doors Knocked

Hundreds of Alaska Campaign for Change volunteers came out in force today to knock on thousands of doors across the Last Frontier!

The unprecedented statewide canvass involved about 30 locations in 16 cities, including Anchorage, Eagle River, Fairbanks, Homer, Juneau, Kodiak, Palmer, Sitka, Soldotna, Talkeetna, Wasilla, Willow and more.

Volunteers went through a brief training at their meet up locations and then headed out to spread Barack's message of change to fellow Alaskans.

JUNEAU, AK – Today in Juneau, state representatives and senators from across Alaska gathered to rally behind Barack Obama and discuss his plan to address record-high energy prices that are straining Alaskans budgets and hurting the Alaska economy.

“Senator Obama has a plan to end our dependence on foreign oil and reduce skyrocketing energy prices,” said Senator Hollis French of Anchorage, a former oil rig worker. “Having worked in the oil business in Alaska for twelve years, I know firsthand the importance of oil and natural gas to Alaska. Senator Obama will not only invest in renewable fuels and increase car fuel efficiency standards, he strongly supports construction of an Alaska natural gas pipeline and accelerated drilling in the Alaska National Petroleum Reserve which will provide affordable energy to Alaska and our country and good jobs for Alaskans.”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Volunteers and staff for the Barack Obama campaign spent the afternoon Sunday going door-to-door talking to residents.

With just 100 days to Election Day volunteers in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau hit the pavement to spread the word about Obama's "Campaign for Change."

Rick Gorka, communications director for the McCain campaign, says the camp still has no immediate plans to open an office in Alaska.

He says in a historically Republican state like Alaska the campaign is confident, for now, in continuing to rely on grassroots efforts to keep McCain's message going.

But Obama volunteers hope to capitalize on the success of the February caucuses when a record number of Alaska Democrats showed up to support

"I'm surprised that the McCain campaign hasn't decided to open an office up here yet but we're not taking Alaska for granted," said Obama's Alaska Communications Director Jeff Giertz. "We're pushing forward and making sure we're talking directly to Alaskans about the issues that are important to them and about Sen. Obama's plan to change the direction of this country."

Volunteers say they support Obama's vision for America.

"I am out today canvassing for Barack Obama because I believe in his character and his ability to lead this country in the direction that we need to be going in," volunteer Shelly Morgan said.

The Obama campaign opened offices last week in Fairbanks, Juneau and the Mat-Su Valley.

Alaska gas prices are the highest in the US

ANCHORAGE, AK – Today as the average price of a gallon of unleaded gas in Alaska reached $4.69, State Senator Hollis French discussed Senator Obama’s plan to help end America’s dependence on foreign oil and criticized the John McCain campaign’s latest misleading negative ad on gas prices.

“Senator Obama has a plan to end our dependence on foreign oil and reduce skyrocketing energy prices,” Sen. French said. “Having worked in the oil business in Alaska for twelve years, I know firsthand the importance of oil and natural gas to Alaska. Senator Obama will invest in renewable fuels, increase car fuel economy standards, and strongly supports the Alaska natural gas pipeline that’ll provide affordable energy to Alaska and our country.”

This week, the McCain campaign launched a negative ad running on national cable TV that tries to blame Obama for high gas prices.

“This ad’s claim is patently false,” French said. “John McCain himself has said that high gas prices are 30 years in the making. Senator McCain has spent 26 years in Washington, and has consistently opposed efforts to end our country’s dependence on foreign oil.”

Barack Obama’s energy plan will provide meaningful relief for Alaska families, make a historic investment in renewable energy development, and help secure our energy independence. Obama’s plan will:

OBAMA FOR ALASKA UNVEILS PLAN FOR ECONOMIC SECURITY FOR ALASKA’S WORKING WOMEN

ANCHORAGE, AK – Senator Barack Obama's campaign today unveiled a plan to provide economic security for Alaska's working women. Obama's plan directly addresses the challenges that women and families face affording quality child care, juggling personal and professional commitments, and coping with soaring prices.

"I don't accept an America where a woman earns less than a man for the same work, or an America that makes women choose between their kids and their careers. It's unacceptable that women are denied jobs or promotions because they've got kids at home. It's unacceptable that 22 million working women don't have a single paid sick day," Senator Obama said. "When I'm President, we'll take these critical issues head-on and help women and families thrive in a changing economy."

"Barack Obama and his wife Michelle come from a working class background and understand what families need," said Obama Alaska spokesman Jeff Giertz. "Given the tough times we are facing economically, Senator Obama’s economic plan is essential for families already juggling higher prices for food, housing, and the fuel needed for their cars and trucks. Senator Obama is the clear choice as the President who will provide Alaska’s working women with the economic relief they need.”

Obama's Plan for Economic Security for America's Working Women

Tax cut for working women. Barack Obama will provide 71 million working women with a tax cut of up to $500—or $1000 per family—to help offset the impact of stagnant wages and skyrocketing costs. 200,000 Alaska women would benefit from this tax break.

Balancing work and family. Obama will help address the challenge of balancing work and family by guaranteeing seven days of paid sick leave to the 22 million working women who currently have none. Obama will also expand child care tax credits, double funding for afterschool programs to serve 1 million more children, and will create a summer learning program to serve an additional 1 million young people. 13,000 Alaska working women would benefit from the expanded child care tax credits and 5,183 Alaska children will benefit from this expansion of afterschool programs.

Health care for every American. As President, Obama will reduce health care costs by $2,500 for a typical family, while providing affordable health care for every American.

A secure retirement guaranteed. Obama will strengthen retirement security for working women, who currently enter retirement with less than half the retirement savings of men. Obama's plan will automatically enroll workers in retirement accounts (with the option to opt-out) and make these accounts portable to help working parents save while balancing their family obligations.

Equal Pay. Obama will fight for paycheck equity and to close the pay gap that leaves women earning only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men. The pay gap is even more pronounced for minority working women—with Hispanic women earning only 53 cents and African American women only 62 cents for every dollar of male earnings.

Affordable college. Obama will put the cost of college in reach for by providing a $4,000 refundable tax credit available at the time of enrollment in exchange for community service.

Raise the minimum wage. Obama will help low-wage working women move into the middle class by increasing the minimum wage to $9.50 by 2011, and indexing it to inflation—and expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). 176,000 Alaska women would directly benefit from the minimum wage increase.

Support Women-Owned Small Businesses. Obama will help women-owned small businesses innovate, grow and create jobs by cutting their capital gains tax rate to zero, and implementing the Women Owned Business contracting program that has been abandoned by the Bush Administration. 22,169 Alaska women small business owners would benefit from the Zero Capital Gains proposal.

Happy Moose Poop!

"Happy Moose Poop!" That was the greeting in Talkeetna, Alaska this Saturday where thousands of Alaskans gathered for the annual Moose Dropping Festival.

The 36-year-old festival included a parade down Main Street, a moose art auction and the highlight of the weekend -- the Moose Drop Dropping! Three thousand moose pellets, each carefully numbered, were hauled up into the sky and let loose to drop to the target painted on the ground below. The poop nearest the bulls-eye made one festival goer the lucky winner.

Local Obama volunteers who didn't want to have to count on luck for this November's election were out in force this weekend at many of Alaska's finest festivals. They know that this election is going to be won neighbor by neighbor, community by community. And not just in certain communities in certain states. This about your neighborhood and your state. It's people like you that are standing up and volunteering, many for the very first time.

My name is Kat Pustay, and I'm the State Director for the Obama campaign in Alaska.

Our grassroots movement for change is hitting the ground this week, when we'll open our first general election campaign office in Anchorage.

Together, we can help create the change America so desperately needs, right here in Alaska.

Unite For Change: The Investment

Organizing to bring people back into politics is not a cost, but an investment in rebuilding the democratic infrastructure of our public life under assault for far too many years. - Marshall Ganz, March 2007

One week ago today, over 30,000 people met in nearly 4,000 homes across the country to Unite For Change.

As field organizer Jennifer Scarbrough explained, these meetings are part of a field plan that has grown out of Barack's roots as a community organizer, and represent grassroots organizing at the most basic level: people talking to one another in their own living rooms, about the issues that are most important to them.

One by one, attendees shared their stories and their experiences, and talked about what inspired them to become active. They also watched a special video the campaign created just for these house meetings, about how ordinary people can organize to empower themselves to make political changes:

Last Saturday's meetings were not the end; they were just the beginning of an unprecedented effort to organize support in all 50 states this summer and build the network of volunteers that we'll need to win in November. The time, labor and money put into these events were not a cost, they were an investment in the future of this campaign and in the communities in which they were held.

One week later, you can see this investment paying off already, with nearly 2000 grassroots events planned for this 4th of July weekend alone.

For supporters across the country, the next step can mean joining or creating a local grassroots group, planning another house party, or helping with voter registration. In the weeks and months to come, we will have even more tools for you to organize and to act, to make a difference in your community and in this campaign for the presidency.

From the beginning, the goal of this campaign has been to bring people back into the political process, to give voice to the voiceless, and to inspire a new generation of citizens to organize, to engage, and to vote. From the beginning, this campaign has been an investment.

Road To Denver: An Alaskan Activist

Alternate Delegate Liz’s hometown of Homer, Alaska looks like it could be featured in National Geographic. Surrounded by the aroma of Evergreens and breeze from the Kachemak Bay, Liz’slog cabin is surrounded by wildlife including moose, bear, and lynx. Yet despite her remote location, Liz is at the hub of many political hot topics. Between the many economic and cultural problems associated with the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the environmental and health hazards that the exemption of the Clean Water Act on local waters have caused, Liz has spent almost her whole life working to improve the land she loves.

Liz has been actively involved in the Democratic party since she was in high school and spent years studying environmental policy and working policy jobs. “In 2006, I worked with many of the Tribes in Cook Inlet in a landmark cooperation with the goal of having the Tribal voice heard on oil and gas issues. ” She also participated in the 2006 National Pollutant Discharge Ellimination System program to improve the permit by “limiting toxic discharges” and appointing agency officials instead of industry employees to monitor pollution levels.

Aside from her political involvement, Liz works at a retail shop and entertains the many tourists that visit the small fishing town every year. Engaged to a commercial fisherman, Liz loves the water and was the first person recorded to swim the length of Wonder Lake in Denali National Park. She also organized (and swam) the first crossing of Kachemak Bay to raise awareness of women’s rape and violence in Alaska.

In this election, Liz is looking enact policy change.

“Non-profits struggle with the full-time job of finding consistent funding from non-traditional sources. Governmental jobs face legislative 'restructuring.' … No matter how much input we had supporting a policy change (or simply keeping current policies and legislation from changing), the sway/influence of corporations held more had more influence."

Liz’s frustration with the influence of corporations in the lobbying system led her to support Barack Obama.

“[He] not just inspires hope with inclusion and great ideas, but backs that with distinct examples of community organization and policy changes.” Liz looks forward to the Convention so she can support the candidate who offers the leadership and change she seeks for her state.

These days, Anchorage's town square is alive with ice skaters and science fiction fans drawn by the Gallery of Ice and its frozen renditions of Darth Vader, E.T., and other copyrighted likenesses from sci-fi films of yore. But over the course of these final five days before the February 5th Democratic Caucus, the center of energy in the Last Frontier will be a few miles away at our Alaska headquarters on 2602 Fairbanks Street.

The front door reminds us: in five days, Alaskans can play their part in our growing movement for change. Inside, you're likely to find a busy call room filled with volunteers working the phones to bring new caucus-goers into the process.

Over the past week, their hard work has paid off. In a state where the 2004 caucuses attracted only 600 attendees, organizational meetings across Alaska drew over 200 Barack supporters.

Something Happening in Alaska

There is something happening in Alaska. As Maya, a 16-year-old Alaska native who's been organizing for Obama in Kenai writes: "People have been coming out of the woodwork to support him that I didn't even know existed!"

"My mother asked me, 'Why is it so important to you that Obama wins?' 'It's like a revolution,' I said."

It's the same feeling that people are feeling in every corner of every state across the country.

Just this morning, Toni Morrison, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning author wrote a stirring endorsement for Barack Obama, and in it reflected those same sentiments that Maya, several generations and a continent away, also shares. As Ms. Morrison wrote:

Dear Senator Obama,
...this is one of those singular moments that nations ignore at their peril. I will not rehearse the multiple crises facing us, but of one thing I am certain: this opportunity for a national evolution (even revolution) will not come again soon, and I am convinced you are the person to capture it.

Here is Maya's account of the fired-up arctic support for Barack Obama, from her DailyKos diary entitled, "Grassroots Alaska: Obama Revolution:"

I was first impressed by Obama when my little sister and I watched his speech online announcing that he was going to run for president. After many times having watched the State of the Union addresses in which our current president could not even remember that the State of the Union Address was called the State of the Union Address, and innumerable other idiocies, we were excited by Obama's eloquence, charisma, and intelligence. The same day, we watched an interview with Mitt Romney. The contrast between the two was really strong. Mitt flip-flopped back-and-forth for the whole 30-minute interview and gave wishy-washy answers. From that day forward, I have had all eyes glued on Barack Obama.

My parents read his book, Dreams from My Father, as we backpacked through Central America last year, and they were just as impressed as I was. He impressed them with his insight and thoughtfulness. Myself, after reading through his website and some of his plans, I believe he is the only person who can not only bring the citizens of America together, but the world together.
This is important because we have so many big world problems that can't be faced single-handedly. When I listen to him speak, he floods me with hope and brings tears to my eyes...

On the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska (area 16,079 sq. miles) where I live, our population at last census was 46,759. People keep to themselves quite a bit, and although they do turn out for local elections to some extent, I would have to say, national politics rarely is of popular interest or conversation. For example, I learned last week that during the last presidential race, 24 people turned out for the Democratic Caucus of our two major towns, Kenai and Soldotna.

When the Iowa caucus was still approaching, days away, and there was still no Obama effort on the Kenai Peninsula, I decided to bring some change to Kenai, and my parents encouraged me to take the lead. Through Obama's website, I got in contact with our state director and district caucus director and told them that I wanted to get people to the caucus for Obama. Soon, I had a box of signs, buttons, stickers, and support cards thanks to Obama's grassroots campaign strategy.

I arranged a location, and announced our first event on the website. I sent public service announcements to the radio stations and our local newspaper. At our first meeting, I had a turnout of 19 people, 5 of whom "came for information" about Obama and left committed to him. Five more were strongly committed, already. Two of my friends from high school came, but, like me, were too young to caucus, but not too young to organize...

...Since that meeting, people have been coming out of the woodwork to support him that I didn't even know existed!

...Last week in my Spanish class, I brought some signs for a guy who was especially excited about my push for Obama. To my astonishment, what I thought to be a conservative class rallied in support of Obama. The young men in the back of the room insisted on holding up an Obama sign for the duration of the class, even to the distress of the teacher...When our teacher asked the guys why they were so excited about Obama, one of them simply replied, spontaneously repeating my sentiment from days earlier, "It's a revolution!"

That's exactly what this campaign has come to mean to me and other young people across America. It is an opportunity for this nation, whose politics we have repeatedly been ashamed of over the last years, to get back in the game before people destroy our country and every country surrounding it.

I believe in Barack Obama, and will be so proud to say he is our president next January. In this revolution, he has the power to change the world and every little town across the United States of America... just like my small community, Kenai, Alaska. It's all about empowering the people, so don't wait for somebody to call on you. Take initiative, and make it happen.

'Obama campaign looks north, to the future'

When Obama announced that he would run for his party’s nomination, he vowed to do so in all of the states. He’s kept his promise. And so far, on the eve of the caucuses, he’s the only Democratic candidate with an office and paid staff in Alaska.

… posters with Obama’s logo are starting to show up around town. People of all ages are gathering on Sunday afternoons on the corner of Seward Highway and Benson Boulevard to wave Obama signs. Increasingly, people are beginning to honk and point their thumbs skyward. About 70 people recently showed up at an organizational meeting. More people are streaming into Obama’s office volunteering to make phone calls, pass out fliers, pass the word.

Alaska meeting overflows with volunteers

There is definitely something in the air.

Two nights ago, the Alaskan Obama team announced a simple organizational meeting in Anchorage -- and watched in amazement as one by one supporter after supporter came through the doors, packing their little meeting room so full that they (happily!) had to go in search of a bigger venue. In the end, such an overwhelming number of people showed up that the meeting had to relocate twice, finally to the Anchorage Public Library, to accommodate the incredible crowd.

"The folks were chanting and cheering by the end of the event!" writes Joseph Hardenbrook, the Alaska State Director. "'Fire it Up!' & 'Ready to go!' were ringing throughout the Anchorage Public Library! I've never seen this is the sort of excitement in Alaska for ANY candidate for ANY office!"

This is what's happening all over the country: because the event was so successful, they had to get 10 more phone lines installed in the office, just to have enough for all the new volunteers.

Barack Obama's movement for change is catching on all over the United States -- from Nevada where people are getting ready to stand for change and caucus for Barack Obama tomorrow morning, all the way up to Anchorage where there is clearly surging support for Senator Obama and his positive message of hope.

Momentum in all 50 states: Alaska office opening!

The enthusiasm of the Barack Obama movement knows no limits -- geographic or otherwise.

As the excitement and momentum before the Iowa caucus builds, it’s become clear that the organization and energy of the movement behind Barack Obama is simply unprecedented -- and not just in the early states! On February 5th, 22 states will cast their votes -- and the Obama campaign already has an incredible team working on the ground. With over 32 offices in 17 states, it's the only campaign up and running with a serious level of organization in many of those states -- states like Utah, Alabama, and now: Alaska!

Over 1,200 Alaskans have registered online to be a part of the Barack Obama movement.

Here are some of our nothernmost supporters, in Fairbanks, Alaska:

As of today, the Obama campaign is proud to announce the opening of the first Alaskan office! They opened their doors in Anchorage today -- making the Obama campaign the only Democratic campaign to open an office in all of Alaska. In fact, Obama is the first Democratic candidate to open an official office in Alaska since 1992.

They have an incredibly dedicated group of volunteers -- and even some uniquely Alaskan volunteers pitching in for the cause:

This past weekend, a big group took to the streets for a sign-waving/visibility event, and as state director Joe Hardenbrook said: "I've been waving signs in Alaska for about ten years, and I have NEVER seen the kind of positive reaction we got on Sunday. Folks were honking their horns, hanging out their windows yelling 'Go Obama!'"

Former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles has endorsed Barack Obama:

With virtually all political attention focused this week on one cold and snowy state (Iowa), the campaign for Sen. Barack Obama turned its attention very briefly to another cold and sometimes snowy place.
Yes, the Illinois Democrat has won the endorsement of former Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles, who spoke briefly to reporters on a conference call a few minutes ago.
Alaska will hold its Democratic presidential caucuses on Feb. 5, along with more than 20 other states that will hold contests on what is being called Tsunami Tuesday.
