Greetings Friends and Supporters;
As a major financial supporter of this President as well as organizer of such events as the Utah for Obama Convention Party and the Official Election Night Celebration I find it difficult to write such blunt blog regarding the failure of our President to fullfill many of the promises he made during the campaign.
While President Obama has made many positive changes to Washington and the way our government serves her people, he has failed to deliver on a few vital issues.
In recent days, I have noticed the President waiver on his commitment to provide a public option for the American People. We were promised affordable healthcare for all Americans and our President appears to be lacking in his conviction to provide this.
In addition to failing to muster up the audacidy to cash in political capital and challenge the "party of no" the President has failed to address the issue "Don't Ask Don't Tell."
If the President fails to protect the public option and shys away from his responsibility to equality for all Americans I will actively finance, support, and work to elect leaders from a different party. While living to see Barack Obama become President of the United States was my proudest moment, especially after all the hard work, I refuse to stop in my demanding for equality and justice for all Americans. No leader who fails to provide basic rights and freedoms to their people deserves to remain in office.
I demand the change we worked so hard to obtain. We the people of Utah, and of these United States deserve more from our President. If he is unwilling to FIGHT for our rights we must rise up and demand them for ourselves.
Oh Captain My Captain... it is my sincere hope that you will fullfill the cause to which we have empowered you.
Sydney Rhees-
(Topic Picture - Wendy Blackman, from Australia, Team Leader for Sandy, UT - in her red pick up truck, delivering food collected from the Obama's Angels Headquarters to the Utah Food Bank Dock#3, on Inauguration Day, January 20th, 2009.)
We had only about two weeks to prepare for this service project. Our Obama's Angels Volunteers were mobilized in response to President Barack Obama's appeal , during the Weekend of Service, this last January 17th, 18th and 19th 2009, in honor of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. It was fun, and we were happy for this opportunity to be of service to our neighbors.
Imagine how much more what we can do next year, and from now on!
THIS IS HOW WE DID IT: We organized Team Leaders to coordinate our volunteers in 18 neighborhoods in the Wasatch Front.
We are happy to report that many of these Team Leaders and Volunteers, about 1/3 of them, were doing volunteers work for the first time and they didn't necessarily belong to the Democratic Party. They came in support of President Obama's call to action. We were really encouraged with that.
The bulk of our Team Leaders so far, have already worked as Volunteers during the 2008 Presidential campaign. They were extremely helpful in training new volunteers. We are very grateful to our seasoned veterans.
Together, they distributed the 10,000 recyclable plastic food donation bags ( which were donated by Downtown STAPLES Store), with the food drive information fliers. This was done door-to-door, for two days before the actual food drive day. More bags/fliers were also distributed during the National Day of Service, when our Obama's Angels volunteers solicited donations, directly door-to-door, in their neighborhoods.
Then, the Obama's Angels Volunteers went door-to-door collecting donations that had been left by donors on porches and outside their front doors. Subsequently, they took these donations to our collecting points scattered in participating stores throughout the Greater Salt Lake area. Donors also had the option of taking their filled donation bags directly to the announced collection points.
On January 20th 2009, Inauguration Day, we celebrated by taking over one ton of food that had been dropped off at our headquarters, one of the official collection points for this food drive, to the Utah Food Bank.
On January 22th, Utah Food Bank send one of their trucks to pick up the donations that had been left at our other six collection locations.
So far we have collected over 4,500 lbs of food, the equivalent of 13,500 meals to needy individuals and families in our communities.
With the Utah Food Bank's permission, we have kept a permanent food collection barrel at our offices, to give an opportunity for our volunteers and donors to drop off their non-perishable food contributions throughout the year, at our convenient downtown location, until our next major food drive. When the food barrel is full, we give them a call and they come and pick it up.
WE HAVE MANY THANKS TO GIVE
Thank you to our Josie Valdez, a great Obama's Angel Volunteer and dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, who lent her support by helping in pre-planning, advising, writing, calling, and generally gracing our offices with her sunshine presence, good humor and intelligence. You're terrific!
Thank you to Roy Maufas, who re-located to Utah from New Orleans, our "Bin Czar", who, along with Holiday-Sugarhouse-UT Team Leader Teresa King and her peppy Mom JoAn King - who contributed their flat bed truck to deliver and collect the food bins - were able coordinate the distribution logistic for this food drive. They also decorated and put signage in the bins.
They worked with Wendy's Team, to collect the donations left at our headquarters and take them to the Utah Food Bank. Roy followed up with the stores to make sure that they had enough collection bins during the food drive. Several stores needed extra bins.
They were very dedicated and creative, as they discharged their volunteer duties!
Thank you to USASERVICE.org who shipped us our "RENEW AMERICA TOGETHER" SIGNS, which were distributed to be displayed as an identifier at the windows of our Team Leaders homes in participating neighborhoods; and at our collection points.
Thank you to all the YOUTH VOLUNTEERS from West High School, in Salt Lake City -UT, for their National Honor Society Students and their Adviser Mindy Thompson; for "City Youth" Volunteers and students from other schools IN this area, who signed in as Obama's Angels volunteers and helped during this food drive.
We are actively searching for and developing new Youth Coordinator Leaders and Student Team Leaders from schools across the country.
Thank you all the Team Leaders and their volunteers from 18 teams who participated in downtown Salt Lake neighborhoods, such as the Capitol Hill, Marmelade District, Harvard-Yale, Avenues, Federal Heights, University, Liberty Park; other towns and neighborhoods, such as Rose Park, Murray, West Temple, North Temple, Holiday, Sugarhouse, Cottonwood, Millcreek, West Jordan, West Valley, Sandy, Draper, Taylorsville; Park City, Provo, Ogden and St. George.
You were enthusiastic, resourceful and generous. We definitely could not have done it without you!
Thank you for all the families who worked together as as team! It's inspiring and heartwarming to see "Good. Works." being taught by example to the younger generations, and the bonds between parents and children being strengthened through their mutual involvement in community service.
Thank you to our Volunteer Coordinator and Spokesperson - Jane England - from Salt Lake City , and other Spokespersons in several neighborhoods who helped to coordinate the Team Leaders, register new volunteers and deal with the media press coverage that we received during the event.
Thank you to the Utah Food Bank team, and a special thanks to Brenda Thompson, Jim and Jessica Pough, and Terry Tanner who made our volunteer humanitarian work so much easier by knowing exactly what to do at the receiving end. Thank you for all the great good work that you all do on behalf of our community.
Thank you to all participating stores and collection points: Big-O Tires, Jiffy Lube, The Red Iguana Restaurant - our liaison drop off point for our local Hispanic Community, and The Spot; a special thanks to STAPLES Stores for its participation in many locations and to their Downtown Salt Lake STAPLES Store Manager, Lisa Fraiser, who acted quickly in helping us with 10,000 plastic bags, 2,000 printed fliers and the right words to her regional manager. She was instrumental in getting STAPLES Stores to participate in this service project as collection points.
Thank you to all the Utah Media: The Salt Lake Tribune and The Deseret Newspapers; KSL Radio, KSL TV(Channel 5), Channel 4 TV, FOX 13 TV; and a special thanks to Ron at Channel 2 TV who followed us around for a day to make a comprehensive presentation about our work and the the Obama's Angels National Day of Service Food Drive. Thanks to all the other local media venues, which we are not mentioning by name, but who covered this event. You helped to bring us more volunteers and donors, and make this food drive a success. WE LOVE YOU GUYS!
Thank you for the unfailing support from the Utah Democratic Party, and a special thanks to Todd Taylor, Wayne Holland and Craig Axford for their support and guidance in our efforts.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE anonymous and GENEROUS DONORS and VOLUNTEERS. It was so much fun and so up-lifting to work together with YOU!
And last, but definitely not least, THANK YOU to our President Barack Hussein Obama for inspiring us to "respond to the better angels of our nature". Next time we'll do it better.

I am very upset with the choice of a homophobic, bigoted, fear mongering, preacher to say the prayer at the Inauguration. I feel that President-Elect Obama owes us a bit more respect than to allow someone who preaches such hatred to participate in this way. If this man taught hatred towards African Americans this would not even be a possibility. I am disappointed and call on our President-Elect to choose someone who is not a messenger of hate. With the recent passing of Prop 8, with overwhelming support of the African American community, I feel this could further drive animosity between the gay community and the African American community. So sad that at a moment of great progress in this nation we still find ourselves ok with discrimination and hate! Please encourage Barack to choose someone else. I am hoping that if the people who got him elected are outraged he might pay attention to our concerns!

My heart leaps for joy and it feels as though a shadow has lifted from my eyes as I read the news in the LA Times. Never before have I seen a cabinet that looks more like my community, nor have a felt such a strong sense of patriotism. THIS is what it's all about!
Never in my lifetime have I felt more "American" than today, in what is taking shape as a diverse cabinet in Washington D.C.

Thank you, President-elect Obama. It is clear that change is finally on the horizon.
There's still one week left to collect signatures following up on the Nationwide Campus Day of Action which was held on October 14! I am writing to ask all members of groups that this blog is being sent to request members of your group, your friends, and your family to sign and return this lette to the More Peace Corps campaign (downloaded by clicking below:)

Letters are starting to pour into the More Peace Corps campaign headquarters which will be delivered in bulk to the TRANSITION Team of the next President (hint initials BO) and leaders of the respective House and Senate committees that deal with foreign affairs and related topics.
Your input for changing American foregin policy is important, so take a few minutes to review the More Peace Corps website ( http://www.morepeacecorps.org ) and lend a helping hand.
As written in the Navajo-Hopi Observer on September 15, 2008, more than 100 tribal leaders endorse Obama. Read more about it on the Navajo-Hopi Observer and Navajo Times websites:

Youtube is an awesome way to reach a wide diverse and interested audience, but frankly when I've been doing some deep searching, I've run across some very objectionable videos. Obviously the content of these videos is anti-Obama. I've seen the things we've likely heard on the news, but this time they are blown up to make them look like they are bigger issues then they are. For example, there are videos on Youtube right now that claim that because Barack's middle name is Hussein, that automatically means he is a "muslim" and/or "terrorist."
I am starting to wonder who is telling these people these things, but then I turn on Fox news, and there is Sean Hannity spewing lie after lie, and he doesn't even seem to notice or care what he is saying.
My videos on Youtube stay away from Politics, but I'm sick and tired. I saw one too many video spewing anti-Barack messages with absolutely no merit what-so-ever.
All they have to go on is the very meager connection to Bill Ayers, the middle name issue, and even the fact that Barack was born in Hawaii. Hawaii is a state of the United States of America is it not. Just because it is not in the lower 48, doesn't make one difference. Lest we forget, John McCain was born in the US zone of the Panama Canal. That is a lot farther away then Hawaii, and isn't even classified as a "state." Yet the hate continues on.
My video showing the hypocracy of the other videos can be seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVmipO4Kvag.
It was posted in response to another video which you can view as well.
The time for hateful ads and racial/discriminatory/derogatory/etc comments in this campaign has got to stop. I for one am proud that my canidate hasn't resorted to such a thing.
Go Barack, we love you!

I actually HAVE written a blog! I wrote a blog all about why I've decided to Host an Event - a Bake Sale this Saturday, October 18 from noon until people stop coming. But, for some reason, my blog didn't post! Basically though, you can view my event here:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gs5gfz
So! This week I am (while on vacation in St. George) devoting my time to planning for this event. My parents have agreed to let me use their lawn and some fold-out tables, and I would like to advertise in both the Salt Lake Tribue and The Deseret News. So far there will be sugar cookies, chocolate chip/peanut butter chip cookies, the most delicious Vegan Cupcakes you can imagine, quality coffee, and various juices. I would love to tie Blue and White balloons to the mailbox, and I have supplies to make home-made Obama-Biden signs.
I would be most obliged to any helpers in the area (or elsewhere!) for any donations to this cause - I think that we can lure in many, many community members with Fresh-Baked Goodies on a Saturday morning, so I am hoping that this event will bring in a great amount of funds for the Obama-Biden campaign. If anyone could offer me aid in advertising in the paper, bringing balloons or signs, or other baked goods to donate, please give me a call at (801) 654 - 7614 or email me at elaineballfr@gmail.com. There's going to be an Information Table to staff! I'd like to talk to as many people as come about questions they have about Barack Obama, and to talk to people about all the important issues this campaign and how Obama will offer the Change we need.
Wish me luck in Suburbia, Utah!
ACORN Obama Campaign RESPONSE

(This is a reply from watchdog@barackobama.com ~Neil)
Thanks for sending in the email about ACORN. This smear has been gaining popularity lately as people look for explanations for our economic crisis -- and smear artists looking to destroy Barack see an opening. Every word of it is dishonest and manipulative.
Email smears like this are part of a broader, shadowy strategy to scare people who aren't very familiar with Barack by spreading false information.
Here are the facts:
Barack Obama was never an ACORN community organizer.Barack was never an ACORN trainer and was never an employee of ACORN.ACORN was not part of Project Vote, the successful voter registration drive Barack led in 1992.As an attorney, Barack worked with the U.S. Department of Justice to represent ACORN and other voter's rights groups in a lawsuit to enforce the widely praised federal Motor Voter Law in Illinois. The Huffington Post has laid out the evidence showing the truth about Barack, ACORN, and these smears. Yesterday was a fine day! It was a great day for driving from the Washington, DC area to Philadelphia via the Bay Bridge. It was a great day for a free street concert in Philadelphia featuring Bruce Springstein, Tens of thousands of Obama supporters including prominent Pennsylvania politicians (like a Governor and Senator) experienced a ‘winds of change’ event.
Springstein provided the quote of the day from my perspective: “"I've spent 35 years writing about America and its people and the meaning of the American promise — a promise handed down right here in this city," said the New Jersey rocker, whose songs often depict down-on-their-luck, working-class dreamers. "Our everyday citizens ... have justifiably lost faith in its meaning." Yesterday was a great example of how Americans can overcome the problems we are facing by coming together.
It is the time to get off the fence, and make sure we have a President and Congressional and other political leadership that will help give American citizens a vision of hope, and help us to reestablish hope and prosperity in our great nation. But it doesn't happen without hard work and dedication.
The Artists for Obama Gallery stroll in Salt Lake City Utah was a huge success! We held the event on Friday, September 19, 2008 in the basement of Obama Headquarters. Rob Bennions band played great jazz out front all evening and drew even more of a crowd.
Thank you to all of you who participated in and submitted artwork to our gallery stroll event. Artists love Obama and Obama loves artists. Did you know that McCain doesn't even have a position on the arts?
A special thanks goes out to the artists who lent their talent to the show. Robin Ballard, who owns the building did a lot of work to see that the hanging system was installed. Amy Gezon and Mary Jane Smith helped with food and made the tables look great. Thank you Marureen, Rob, Amy U, Leslie and Mason who stuck around all night and helped.
We had over three hundred people pass through. Many of them volunteered to help the campaign, donated money, picked up yard signs and bought art. We even had a few voter registrations. Even Mayor Coroon bought a piece of great work.
The group is closed and we wont be accepting any more work. There has been an overwhelming interest in contributing work and there just aren't enough resources. We will have many more events in the gallery for the campaign, and we will try to make it available on Friday nights for viewing. We will likely hold another smaller open house during gallery stroll in October.
If you missed the show, come to Headquarters and check out the work of Mason Fetzer, Pilar Pobil , Gigi Kelson, Cori Redstone, R. Skraznas, Francis Zimbeaux, Weird Chief Pop Art, Michelle Anjenette Buck,Walt Wilcox, Howie Garber, Maurine Hobbs, Mike Walton, Jordan Hinckley, and many more.
Look for a piece about our event and the arts policies of both the Obama and McCain campaigns in an upcoming issue of the Salt Lake Tribune.
Keep staying involved. Send your friends to voteforchange.com to make sure they are registered. We still have a lot of work to do before the election.
Thank You !

I live in Rep. Roz McGee's district, 28, and since she's retiring, the seat is open. Brian King is the Democratic candidate for the district, and I really can't say enough good things about him. I had lunch with Brian before the primary, and I learned a lot about him. In the months since, I've had several opportunities to meet with him, and his campaign manager, Chris Fleming. They've been very supportive of Obama for Utah, and the grassroots movement. Brian King will continue to represent District 28's interests, and will be a very accessible Representative.
Here are the issues Brian is running on, as stolen directly from his web site:
Representative Politics: I’m running to ensure that the interests of the people in District 28 are represented by an experienced, knowledgeable, and established advocate.Education: I was gratified to see the voucher issue so decisively defeated at the polls last year. We must build a strong educational infrastructure to effectively fund public education at all levels in the state while at the same time put in place mechanisms to attract and retain excellent teachers.Ethics Reform: We must continue to press for basic, common-sense legislation in this area. For example, it is absurd that legislators have the ability to take unused campaign funds and use them for personal benefit at the end of their service.Economy: We must ensure that our economy stays strong. Thousands of people are losing houses due to the mortgage crisis and as a state we must provide avenues for residents of District 28 and across the state to manage their money so that they don’t lose their home while at the same time ensuring that new homeowners can buy a home.Environment: Too often the environment takes a back seat to development or other economic interests. Our representative in the legislature must work to bring greater balance to all environmental issues we in District 28 are concerned about.Health Care: We must work as a state to ensure that every Utahn has health insurance, and is allowed access to quality health care while at the same time encouraging the best and safest possible medical practices in our community.
You can get a good sense of who Brian is by reading his blog, or if you enjoy reading lawyer-speak, check out his law blog.
I got this email, titled 56 Days Till Election day, from Chris Fleming earlier:

If you are sitting around, saying to yourself that you wish you had plans this weekend, you're in luck! How about heading to Grand Junction, Colorado, as part of Drive for Change?
Can't afford it?
Well, you have to eat, anyway! And all you'll have to pay for is your food.
Colorado is swinging back and forth, and we can't afford to let McCain win there!

After I heard Barack Obama speaking to a crowd last winter, my mind was made up. I knew he would be my candidate. His message was so clear, I did not even pay much attention to the ensuing duel between you and him. Of course, as we got closer to the time of the convention, and the danger of a division within the party became real, I began to worry.
Well, on the evening of the 26th, you set my mind at ease. Listening to your speech, I started wondering why I had not "discovered" you earlier. Just about everything you said was what I needed to hear. You "electrified" me, you restored my hope and my optimism. You truly amazed me with your eloquence and with your ability to generate exactly the kind of enthusiasm needed to heal the rift when time has not really got a chance to heal your own inner bruises which you must have suffered as a result of the outcome of the long and pretty cruel battle of the campaign.
Now that I have a fairly good idea of your capacity and of your intentions, I strongly hope that you will have an important key position in Barack's White House. Your intellect would surely help improve the image the world has of our nation... Personally, I have already greatly benefited from getting to know you better: knowing that still there are leaders - like you - who demonstrate their desire to make this world a better place fills me with joy and gives new meaning to my life.
I am confident that Barack Obama along with you and other members of his government will deliver on the promises, and four years from now we will have forgotten the nigtmares of the last few years.
Thank you again.

Thank you to all of you who participated and volunteered last night at Canyon Rim Park. A special thanks goes to Mike Lookinland who kept things running with the giant screen.
All four major news stations covered the event as well as local papers and radio stations.
Kristen Garbett did a great job running the soda and snacks booth and Rob Skraznas was a great host. The event was hosted by Rob, Kristen and I. Over a dozen volunteers registered voters and signed up more future volunteers. Sydney Rhees merged his ever-expanding house party with ours and we really appreciate his help and participation. If you haven't seen his house it is on 7th East. His little paint job has made the papers. He also brought cardboard Obama and many people took pictures with him.
We don't have any banners locally, but by all means, if you want to make something and display it on your home that says a lot about your support.
Many people brought homemade signs and banners. Obama t-shirts abounded and some even got their dogs into the spirit by decorating them. No animals were harmed or will be harmed in this campaign. I swear.
We had around 300 people attend. More than that showed up just to get yard signs. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker attended and gave a great speech.Candidates Jean Welch Hill, Brian King, Bob Springmeyer, and Lynn Hemmingway were on hand to speak to voters, get their input and celebrate with the crowd. Grae Wallace from Canyon Coffee did a great job keeping everyone caffinated.
Suzanne Gelderman addressed the crowd. Duchess and Patrick worked the Obama booth and spoke to everyone. If you forgot to take home the candidate sign you wanted go to slcountydems.org for more information on getting lawn signs of local candidates. It is vital that we keep up the pressure and show our support not only for Obama but for local people on the ground who will contribute as a whole to the Obama Presidency.
John and his wife had those great Jute bags for sale with the logo on them. If you missed getting one you can catch him at the Farmers Market downtown every Saturday. We signed a banner to hang in headquarters. If you haven't made it to headquarters yet is is on 780 East, South Temple. Stop by to volunteer this Saturday or stop by sometime just to say hello. Hopefully we will get some t-shirts and bumper stickers.

It was an emotional evening as we spread out on blankets in front of the glowing Wasatch Mountains under the setting sun. It was the next best thing to being in Denver because sharing this occasion with a cheering crowd is no comparison to sitting in one's own livingroom. We clapped, we screamed, we booed, and we gave standing ovations. Wouldn't we have felt funny doing that in front of the sofa alone at home?
Now is the time to get started on local campaigns. There will be many volunteer opportunities. Look in Events for them and register saying you will volunteer. The Neighbor to Neighbor program can be found when you go to your dashboard. We need a lot of people in Utah to help out. Volunteer early and you may be a local coordinator.
Thanks for sharing in the excitement. I hope to see you elsewhere in the community. Say hello and let's have a great election!
