A recent Winthrop University Poll shows Barack Obama trails both Hillary Clinton and John Edwards among South Carolina residents (Press release here Link and polling data here Link ). Clinton's lead is substantial among Democrats, while Edwards and Obama are in close competition for second place with very similar numbers. Note that this is not a head to head poll-- "which candidate do you prefer"-- but asks "do you have a favorable opinion of this candidate." It should also be noted that Black candidates supposedly do better in surveys than at the voting booth, possibly because of respondents who don't want to admit an unwillingness to vote for a Black candidate. On the plus side, a large number of respondents said that they are unfamiliar with Obama, so if we get the word out we can close that gap...
