I hope to start this group in order to compile videos of Barack on the campaign trail. Everyone could edit thier own clips and upload. This would be sorta like political ads, but from individuals saying why they want Barack Obama to be our next President.

Obama and the New Spirit of Empathy Group

Barack Obama is leading a movement based on values and at the core of this is the value of empathy. Barack talks about empathy and the importance of 'standing in other peoples shoes', in many of his speeches (I've collected 50 so far). Empathy is the most basic value he ran on and he says the country has an 'empathy deficit' that needs to be filled. We are forming an Empathy Values Group to build on Obama's call to address the empathy deficit.

As part of this empathy movement, we are also putting together a video of his talking about this topic to give it some context and promote this foundational progressive value. Let's help fill the empathy deficit by making people more aware of the topic. This is a collaborative project and we invite you to take part. See.

Even though they strongly backed Hillary Clinton in the race for the Democratic nomination, many Latinos appear to have quickly warmed to Barack Obama's historic quest to capture the White House.
Latinos voted for Clinton over Obama by a nearly 2-to-1 margin, according to an analysis of exit polls throughout the primary season by the Pew Hispanic Center.

Now that the Illinois senator has clinched the nomination, many Clinton loyalists have shifted their allegiance to Obama.

Obama enjoys a 33 percentage point advantage over McCain among Latino registered voters nationwide, according to a Gallup Poll summary of surveys taken in May.

"To me, he's head and shoulders above McCain," said Felix Diaz, a 73-year-old Victorville resident. "I think the rest of the Hispanic community feels the same way."

While many Latinos expressed great admiration for McCain's accomplishments as a decorated veteran, several voiced reservations about his ability to lead the country during a time of domestic and international turmoil.

"McCain is an awesome person. He's a former POW," said Irma Escobar, a 52-year-old special-education teacher who lives in Fontana. "But when I look at him, I look at four more years of Bush."

Escobar, a Republican most of her life, said she is crossing party lines to support Obama.

Even though she was a child at the time, Escobar said Obama's candidacy reminds her of the hope and idealism embodied in the presidency of John F. Kennedy.

"Obama is lighting the fire in the youth of today," Escobar said. "That's what reminds me of Kennedy. And it reminds me of Camelot."

Blanca Ortega, an 18-year-old student at Cal State San Bernardino, is fired up about seeing a minority become commander in chief.

"I think it's great that this country is starting to evolve and have different races in higher positions," Ortega said. "That will help us grow as a country."

But it hasn't been easy for some die-hard Clinton supporters to embrace Obama.

Business owner Lynda Gonzalez said she is disturbed by Obama's long-term relationship with his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose racially charged sermons have been criticized as unpatriotic and offensive.

Even though Obama has severed ties with Wright, Gonzalez is irked by the candidate's association with the controversial preacher.

"How can you sit there for 20 years and hear this stuff and not get up and walk away?" Gonzalez said.

Still, Gonzalez can't bring herself to vote for McCain.

"I don't want a war anymore, and I blame the Republicans for this economy," the 46-year-old Bloomington resident said.

McCain supporters admit they will have a tough time pulling Latinos into the Republican column in November.

Fifty-seven percent of Latino registered voters call themselves Democrats or say they lean to the Democratic Party, while 23 percent align with the Republican Party, according to a recent Pew nationwide survey.

"Latinos are not a group that Senator McCain will concede to the Democrats," said Hector Barajas, spokesman for the McCain campaign in California.

McCain has a strong military background and a record of leadership on issues such as immigration reform, Barajas said.

McCain was a chief proponent of legislation to create a path to citizenship for most of the nation's estimated 12million illegal immigrants. But right-wing criticism during the primary campaign led the Arizona senator to harden his views on illegal immigration.

He now talks about securing the U.S-Mexico border before helping illegal immigrants already in the country.

2008 Democratic Presidential Race

The Democratic Party has three types of delegates; two types are elected at the state level. The third is less well publicized or understood: the super-delegate.

What Are Political Party Delegates?
Delegates are people who attend a political party national convention and who elect the party nominee. Some states select delegates during a Presidential primary and others during caucuses; some states also have a state convention where national convention delegates are selected. Some delegates represent state congressional districts; some are "at large" and represent the entire state. The Democratic party also has a third type: super-delegates. A super-delegate is a leader in the National Democratic Party who has a vote at the national convention; they not selected by state party members.

A candidate needs 2,026 delegates to cinch the nomination. Pledged (with pledged super delegates as of May 27, 2008) delegate estimate:
Obama - 1,661 Delegates with 307 Super Delegates = 1,978 (needs 48 more)
Clinton - 1,500 Delegates with 283 Super Delegates = 1,783 (needs 243 more)

Who Are Super-Delegates?
Super-delegates (approximately 850 in 2008) include the following:

* Elected members of the Democratic National Committee (~450)
* Democratic Governors
* Democratic US Senators and US Representatives (including non-voting delegates)
* Distinguished party leaders (current and former Presidents and Vice Presidents; former Democratic leaders of the Senate and House; former DNC chairmen)
* Unpledged "add-on's" chosen by the DNC

Rationale For Super-Delegates
The Democratic Party established this system in part in response to the nomination of George McGovern in 1972. McGovern took only one state and had only 37.5 percent of the popular vote. Then in 1976, Jimmy Carter was a dark-horse candidate with little national experience.

The purpose of the super-delegate system is to act as a check on ideologically extreme or inexperienced candidates. It also gives power to people who have a vested interested in party policies: elected leaders. Because the primary and caucus voters do not have to be active members of the party (in New Hampshire they can sign up and sign out going-and-coming at the polls), the super-delegate system has been called a safety-value.

Importance of Super-Delegates

The Democratic Party allocates delegates based on a state's Presidential vote in the prior three elections and the number of electors. In addition, states that hold their primaries or caucuses later in the cycle receive bonus delegates.

It has been 30 years since the Democratic Party had a cliffhanger going into the Convention. If there is no clear winner after state primaries and caucuses, then the super-delegates -- who are bound only by their consciences -- will decide the nominee.

FOR MANY CONSERVATIVES, Sen. John McCain is not their favorite Republican. They think he's built a career at their expense, painting them as fools and bigots. They resent his holier-than-thou attitude. And they're not inclined to trust anyone who has been so fawned over by the national media.

Curiously, a lot of liberal Democrats feel the same way about McCain. He isn't their favorite Republican either -- but it's because they know he'll be tough to beat in November. They would have preferred to run against someone more extreme and easier to demonize. That's not John McCain.

I first met McCain 10 years ago when I was a working at the Arizona Republic. What I remember is that, in a political climate where so many elected officials -- Republican and Democrat alike -- were wearing themselves out pandering to racists who demanded action on illegal immigration, McCain was one of the few who didn't play that game.

In 1998, while Texas Gov. George W. Bush made headlines for earning an impressive 49 percent of the Hispanic vote in his re-election, McCain walked off with an unheard-of 65 percent in his Senate re-election bid. Six years later, he did even better, earning around 70 percent of the Hispanic vote.

Most political observers don't expect McCain to match those numbers in a national election, but half of that -- 35 percent -- is a definite possibility. With that kind of support among

Hispanics, McCain could win the White House.

And so Democrats are doing everything they can to distort McCain's record. Some are actually accusing McCain of not doing enough for immigration reform. In fact, they might even try to compare McCain to nativists such as Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., who competed with the Arizona senator for the GOP nomination.

Good luck. The two men seem to detest one another. They even tangled last summer when McCain dismissed Tancredo's views on what makes someone an American as "beyond my realm of thinking."

Hispanics in Arizona who have known McCain for years weren't surprised by that exchange. When I ask them to explain what draws Hispanics to McCain, I hear the same things: his independence, his convictions, his courage and his moderate stance on issues. Then, of course, there is his military service and his heroic suffering as a prisoner of war.

"If you look at Latino families, we've all got someone who has been in the military," said Ruben Alvarez, a McCain supporter and principal at the Molera Alvarez Group, a public affairs firm in Phoenix. "The fact that McCain is so patriotic is a draw for many Latinos."

Another Hispanic Republican called McCain the original compassionate conservative, someone who wore that label before there ever was a label. And, she said, as someone who has faced his share of challenges in life, McCain's compassion bleeds over to anyone picked on or preyed upon. At the moment, Hispanics are under fire thanks to an immigration debate that doesn't bother to distinguish between recent immigrants and U.S. citizens -- as long as they have Spanish surnames.

But there's another factor that helps explain McCain's appeal to Hispanics -- he's spent 20 years quietly recruiting them into his campaigns and building up personal relationships in that Arizona community.

Bettina Nava met McCain more than 15 years ago, and served as state director for his Senate office in Arizona for three years. Now based at a consulting firm in Phoenix, Nava was recently named one of 11 campaign managers for McCain. She's in charge of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.

"What initially drew me to McCain was that I have never met anyone who loved his country more," Nava told me. "He honors his commitments. For Latinos, I don't know that we've always viewed government that way. There is always a lot of lip service. But at least with this guy, we get a straight shooter."

McCain marked Cinco de Mayo by launching his Hispanic outreach effort, which includes a Spanish-language Web site. Those gimmicks don't hurt. But what is really going to help McCain win Hispanic support in November is the same thing that has earned him so much of it up to now.

It's called character, and Hispanics -- like many other Americans -- may not always be able to define it. But they know it when they see it.

I go to the National Council of La Raza Conference every year and they are an awesome organization and Al Garza (read on) has it totally wrong. I suggest that our next President of the U.S.- Barack Obama should also accept his invitation to the all important NCLR Conference in San Diego, Ca this year from July 12-15, 2008. All three candidates are also attending the National Association of Latino Elected Officials in Washington D.C. from June 25-28, 2008. As a Chicano elected official I support Barack Obama and the Barack Obama website should have a endorsement list of Latino elected officials as John Kerry did fours years ago. We need more Latino elected officials to be visible during this campaign as they are the grass root organizers of the community! Again read this article I found on the blogante site:

"John McCain is generating outrage among a border watch organization for accepting an invitation to a controversial Hispanic group.

Al Garza, national executive director of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, is expressing outrage over Senator McCain's (R-Arizona) planned attendance to the annual convention of the National Council of La Raza. Garza claims the group espouses the re-conquering of the southwestern United States for assimilation back into Mexico.

"They have one thing in mind, and that is the re-conquering of the United States," he maintains. "Although they are attempting to dupe the United States American citizen to believe that this is in fact an American movement of Hispanic descent to educate and inspire Hispanics," Garza notes.

Garza says in fact the issue has nothing to do with Hispanic Americans at all. "If you notice very carefully, they are catering not to the Hispanic per se, although they're using the term Hispanic," he continues. "They're in fact catering to illegal immigrants who want open borders."

He believes McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, is not serving the best interests of American citizens by accepting an invitation from La Raza."

In only 2 days since I started publicizing the Obama Podcast on Sunday, it went from 2 Subscriptions to 145 subscriptions as of Tuesday evening. Thanks for passing this URL on to all the callers and door knockers. Undecideds and volunteers alike can finally get an in depth look at Senator Obama with these audios and videos.

The Monday talk with Working Families in Blue Bell PA audio is now up and video will be up in a few more hours. Take two twentysomething Latinos with a taste for politics, give them a crash course in news reporting, equip them with video cameras and press credentials, "embed" them at the Democratic and Republican conventions this summer and let 'er rip. That's the idea cooked up by the nonprofit Voto Latino and SíTV, the cable and Internet company geared to young English-speaking Latinos.

The collaboration, dubbed "Crash the Parties '08," has already drawn dozens of online applications from wannabe-embedded reporters. The two who are ultimately chosen will produce newscasts, video blogs and interviews with candidates and convention delegates for a growing audience of hip, bicultural Latinos who may not be all that plugged in yet to the political process.

"Young people aren't participating because they don't really know how the process works," said María Teresa Petersen, director of Voto Latino, a media-savvy, nonpartisan voter registration group. "What better way to engage than to have someone who looks like them and talks like them to break the process down?"

The project is part of a new surge of attention being paid to young Latinos, who are shaping up to be this election's "soccer moms," a decisive group of swing voters, as well as a coveted market demographic of "new media" consumers. Of the nation's 18 million eligible Latino voters, half are under 40, and tens of thousands more reach voting age every month, according to the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington DC.

Other media companies are also interested in the burgeoning market:

-- The online social networking company MySpace launched a bilingual site, MySpace Latino, last week, with virtual communities geared toward soccer, music, fashion and other Hispanic "passion points," according to managing director Victor Kong. Politics doesn't yet merit its own community on the site, he said, but the company did team up with MTV earlier this year to produce presidential "town hall meetings" that include a focus on Latino issues.

-- The Spanish-language media company ImpreMedia, which publishes the San Francisco weekly newspaper El Mensajero, the Los Angeles daily La Opinión and others, also is rolling out a Web portal this week to link the news and entertainment content of all its print and Internet products, intended especially for younger Latinos, who use the Internet more readily than their parents.

Those endeavors are part of a larger courtship of the fast-growing young Latino audience. Marketers and political campaigns are increasingly reaching them through interactive media, using social networking, text messaging and - in the case of "Crash the Parties" - asking viewers to nominate and vote, a la American Idol, for the folks who will cover the political conventions.

"In reaching this segment, there has to be an interactive component," said Patricia Gaitán, a board member of the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies. "The SíTV method is right on target and in a fashion that's going to resonate for them."

One SíTV hopeful is Christopher Timbó Temblador, a sociology major at San Jose State University who has worked as a congressional intern, blogs regularly and volunteers as a college adviser at a local high school.

"I'm very direct and I'm real," said Temblador, 22, making the case for why he should go to the Democratic convention to ask tough questions about education, immigration and health care policy. "Being the son of immigrants, I can talk about being raised in poverty and striving to get my education, but I also understand what's going on at the federal level and how to use all the resources of the media."

Sacramento political strategist Sam Rodríguez believes the growth of the Latino electorate - combined with contested primaries and galvanizing issues - may create "a perfect storm" that engages young Latino voters such as Temblador. And he says sending them off to cover the campaign for SíTV is a brilliant strategy.

"I have familia in California, San Antonio, Puerto Rico and Philadelphia, all between 17 and 35, who are completely jazzed up about this primary," said Rodríguez. "What SíTV has come up with is innovative, it's thinking outside the box."

Contestants have until May 6 to upload a video discussing why they should represent young Latinos at the conventions. Then viewers can vote and those votes will be considered by a panel of judges, including actress Rosario Dawson, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and CNN anchor Rick Sánchez, who will also train and mentor the two young reporters.

Demonstrated Consistent Leadership versus Inconsistency

Throughout this historic campaign, we have learned a lot about the character of the candidates. Senator Obama has demonstrated consistent leadership values. In stark contrast, Senator Clinton has remained inconsistent. Through this posting, I am hoping we can make a video demonstrating the important difference in leadership.

At 3 am, I know there is only one Senator Obama who will pick up the phone. There has been a tearful Senator Clinton, a mocking Senator Clinton, a gracious Senator Clinton, a "shame on you" or "meet me in OH" Senator Clinton, a "I will release my taxes" but refuse to do so Senator Clinton, and the SNL comic Senator Clinton.

At historic times like this, Americans will find comfort in knowing the fate of America domestic and foreign policy is not dependent on which Senator Clinton happens to get out of bed that day.

I am encouraging Obama supporters to please create a video of this contrast and share it with the world. Such a video would make it clear that there is only one choice. The demonstrated conistent leadership of Senator Obama.

Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas was so inspired by Barack Obama's speech in New Hampshire that he and a whole bunch of stars and singers raced off to the recording studio and shot this video.

It was just released today. They're not sure that the Obama campaign even knows it's out there yet. I sat watching it with tears rolling down my face at the power of one voice to move many and at the power of many voices to move a nation. This sort of thing, you're lucky if it happens once in your lifetime. We can be sure it will probably never happen again in ours. Whatever you're doing, please take five minutes and go watch.

I'm not for negative campaigning in any light, but there are things that should be pointed out about Hillary. I like her, she is a good candidate and it would be truly amazing to have a female president. However, recently I watched Sicko and learned that Hillary Clinton received hundreds of thousands of dollars to stop pushing her health plan campaign. She wasn't alone in these lobbies, but compared to what she's running for and against I think it should be said.

Just as Senator Obama brings new people to politics, and re-invigorates those who've lost faith, so do his supporters in Orange County.

Often written-off as an impregnable bastion of Republicanism, Orange County is actually chalk-full of Democrats.

Just ask county party Chairman Frank Barbaro.

Welcoming the Obama campaign to The O.C., Barbaro reminds us that 1 out of every 100 Americans lives in Orange County - which is second only to Los Angeles for the number of residents who are registered Democrats.

Freedom of Speech at UNR Still Under Discussion

If the University of Nevada, Reno has its way, Maritza Perez, the Vice-President of the Students for Barack Obama UNR chapter, won’t be able to practice her freedom of speech by placing a Barack Obama sign and an anti-war sign in her 4th floor dorm-room window.

The ACLU has now gotten involved and is advising Maritza on her upcoming discussions with the school administrators. The official policy of UNR is to not allow any signs in dorm room windows—so that they don’t have to make decisions over what is “offensive.”

The Nevada Sagebrush has been doing great in-depth reporting on this controversy and contacted Lee Rowland, the staff attorney for the ACLU about the upcoming conflict with school administrators:

Rowland said this is a First Amendment issue and laughed when she learned the university banned signs because they didn’t want to deal with obscene speech.
“Quite frankly, (banning signs because) some speech might be offensive or disruptive is absolutely ludicrous, especially from a government entity like UNR,” Rowland said.

The University of Nevada, Reno was the first institute of higher learning in Nevada and was established in 1887. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas broke free from UNR in 1964 and began to call its students the “Rebels” to solidify their newfound freedom.

It looks like students at UNR are still fighting to level the playing field—and university administrators are still pushing back against anyone who wishes to use their freedom of speech—whether that be to support a Democratic presidential candidate, or protest the Iraq War.

UNR President Milton Glick said that “It’s one of those issues where good people can disagree on it.”

Civil rights should not be written off with such ease. Mr. Glick, we respectfully disagree with you.

Brzezinski Embraces Obama Over Clinton for President

(Bloomberg) -- Zbigniew Brzezinski, one of the most influential foreign-policy experts in the Democratic Party, threw his support behind Barack Obama's presidential candidacy, saying the Illinois senator has a better global grasp than his chief rival, Hillary Clinton.

Obama ``recognizes that the challenge is a new face, a new sense of direction, a new definition of America's role in the world,'' Brzezinski said in an interview on Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt.''

``Obama is clearly more effective and has the upper hand,'' Brzezinski, who was President Jimmy Carter's national security adviser, said. ``He has a sense of what is historically relevant, and what is needed from the United States in relationship to the world.''

Brzezinski, 79, dismissed the notion that Clinton, 59, a New York senator and the wife of former President Bill Clinton, is more seasoned than Obama, 46. ``Being a former first lady doesn't prepare you to be president,'' Brzezinski said.

Clinton's foreign-policy approach is ``very conventional,'' Brzezinski said. ``I don't think the country needs to go back to what we had eight years ago.''

``There is a need for a fundamental rethinking of how we conduct world affairs,'' he added. ``And Obama seems to me to have both the guts and the intelligence to address that issue and to change the nature of America's relationship with the world.''

Negotiating With Foes

Brzezinski also sided with Obama, who was criticized by Clinton as being ``irresponsible'' and ``naive'' for saying he would meet in his first year as president with leaders of adversaries such as Iran and Syria. ``What's the hang-up about negotiating with the Syrians or with the Iranians?'' Brzezinksi said. ``What it in effect means'' is ``that you only talk to people who agree with you.''

Clinton has the backing of her own Democratic foreign- policy heavyweights, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke, both of whom served in her husband's administration.

Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, had no comment on Brzezinski's remarks.

Iraq

Brzezinski, a harsh critic of the Bush administration's war in Iraq, slammed President George W. Bush for claiming progress is being made in Iraq and for asserting in an Aug. 22 speech that an early pullout would lead to the kind of bloodshed Southeast Asia experienced after American forces left Vietnam.

The addition of about 30,000 U.S. troops in recent months ``may be making some progress in some suburbs of Baghdad, but I don't think anyone claims that it marks the turning point in what is clearly a failure,'' Brzezinski said.

``And the president's speech itself was an admission of a colossal failure, a colossal failure,'' he said. ``Four and a half years after his invasion of Iraq, he's now saying that if we withdraw, Iraq ends up like Vietnam or even worse.''

A U.S. intelligence report released yesterday said the troop increase has had some success in curbing violence and there have been ``modest improvements in economic output,'' yet ``Iraq's sectarian groups remain un-reconciled'' and al-Qaeda ``retains the ability to conduct high-profile attacks.''

Brzezinski said Bush wants to ``bequeath the war to his successor.''

``As long as that war goes, we're going to be tied, handcuffed in dealing with foreign affairs,'' he said. ``Our relations with China, with Russia are deteriorating, we don't have freedom of action, we're despised worldwide.''
