After Sen. Hillary Clinton suspended her campaign last week and endorsed her opponent, when Sen. Barack Obama clinched the Democratic nomination, campus political groups are taking similar action.
Despite the contentious race between Clinton and Obama for the Democratic nomination, the University's chapters of Students for Obama and Students for Hillary will merge with the College Democrats on campus.
In a concession speech Saturday, Clinton called on her supporters to work as hard to elect Obama as they had for her primary campaign. Students for Hillary chair and LSA junior Kelly Bernero said she, along with the majority of her group, will campaign for Obama.
"Students for Hillary was a subgroup of College Dems and was established on the premise it would dissolve once the Democratic nominee was chosen," Bernero said.
The same goes for Students for Obama. LSA junior Tom Duvall, chair of the group, said that while his group will dissolve, its role won't. Duvall said members of his group will all work as part of College Democrats this fall.
While some disgruntled Clinton backers have started sporting "NObama" T-shirts and swearing to vote for presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, campus politicos are mostly playing nice.
LSA junior Nathaniel Eli Coats Styer, chair of the University's chapter of College Democrats, said that come fall, he expects that Democrats on campus will set aside their differences and work toward electing a Democrat in the fall.
"There's a little bit of chiding, but there's no animosity," Styer said. "I think everyone's looking forward to seeing a Democrat in office."
In fact, members of Students for Hillary and Students for Obama watched the primary results come in together on Super Tuesday in February and worked side-by-side with the College Democrats in other efforts.
Styer said that, ultimately, all the Democratic candidates stand on similar platforms. When Sen. Joe Biden and former Sen. John Edwards were knocked out of the race, the members of Students for Biden and Students for Edwards joined College Democrats because they hoped to elect anyone other than Republican candidate Sen. John McCain, Styer said.
But LSA junior Brady Smith, chair of the University's chapter of College Republicans, isn't convinced that supporters of Obama and Clinton will be able to put aside their differences.
Although he said he wasn't sure what the climate was like on campus, Smith said the drawn-out primary season has taken a toll on unity in the Democratic party.
Smith said that despite a rough primary fight between McCain and former Republican candidate Mitt Romney, members of Students for Romney have campaigned door-to-door for McCain with the College Republicans.
"I don't think there is that congeniality on the Dems' side," Smith said. "I think it's much more bitter."
By having a nominee four months before the Democratic party, Smith said Republicans, including those at the University, had a strategic advantage over the Democrats.
"We were the first ones to get the word out there," Smith said. "We've had a couple months on the Democrats in terms of getting people excited about our candidate."
For all of the new Hillary supporters stopping in and blogging about the sexism you have experienced during this campaign – I would point you toward this post as an example of the racism we often see toward Barack and family posted here. I am reposting Ann’s blog in its entirety because it will probably be removed soon and I think people should see this.

I never thought of anything racially until I had to move here and went to the mall and a Black person looked at me, and thought, Why is this Dumb White Person carring on a conversation with me? In Texas we talked to everyone and never thought anything about it! Living here has been pure Hell, bcause of the chip on African American peoples shoulder, that we owe them something, bacause of Civil Rights. I would much prefer Hispanics and their happy nature, to living here. Yes the Hispanicas are coming to Alabama and they do not know how to deal with them. Obama is only Black when he wants to BE! I see him as raised by his white family and acheiving what he has because of HIS WHITE HERITAGE! As for Michelle she is a discrace, by saying she has never been proud to be an American. Well, guess what, Michelle, you are a rich Black person who, does not appreciate what you have. I hope every Hillary supporter votes for McCain , because having you people would be as BAD as having John Kerry and Mrs Kerry in the White House. I do not buy Heinz products to this day because of their stupidty. Obama, you are playing the BLACK CARD and you are half WHITE! You are forgetting the other half that won't vote for you!

My response to Ann is as follows:
A short while ago, a wise fellow named Peter waltzed onto the site to inform Obama supporters of our mental deficiency because Barack has posted issues specific to different groups on this web site. Peter, in a post titled “why classify” said,
“Under the "People" heading of this very website there are headings where you can choose a classification of American (note there's no Caucasian-American). Why do we have to classify ourselves? This country is supposed to be a melting pot, not a tossed salad - no I'm not going to explain it, look it up if you don't know. If BHO is supposed to be the big uniter, then why separate us and then not include every separate group? If all the intellectuals are supposed to be flocking to BHO, then where is the intelligence? Use it people”.
It’s an amazing bit of wisdom Peter brings to our wonderful forum. He clearly isn’t interested in hearing about Native American issues, reservations, failure of US policies and the breaking of treaties with Native peoples. And he didn’t stop by to hear Barack’s position on policy in his native Korean, Chinese, or Arabic. Peter wasn’t here to delve into Senator Obama’s plans for the inner cities, gang violence, drug abuse, urban blight. No, Peter was just stopping by to tell us that the only issues that should matter to us are the issues that that matter to him. Got it – addressing issues specific to different groups of Americans is un-American.
Based on this assessment, I would venture a wild guess that Peter is a young to middle-aged white male, middle class, probably grew up in a red state, and quite likely has little to no secondary education.
Sorry to break you the bad news, Peter, but America is a microcosm. We are rich because of our diversity, not despite it. America and Americans should be proud of this diversity and embrace it, it is the best thing in the world we have going for us!
Being a proud American does not require you to give up your own culture and heritage, but being a true American does require you to open your mind and accept people that are different than you.
Novel idea Peter, why don't you think about it…
Crossover Republicans will be a factor in today's races. I can assure you they will account for more than 5% of Clinton’s vote. Ditto Heads are an unbelievable group and they are much more prevalent in these elections than the media give them credit for. I mean, think about it...they have absolutely nothing to loose and everything to gain. People will make the argument that McCain would likely rather face Obama in the general because of the Wright controversy and his perceived weakness with middle-class rural white voters. That is not the point. The idea here is that Barack Obama is the clear leader and should, for all practical purposes, be walking away with all the Super Delegates by now. If the Ditto Heads under Operation Chaos can disrupt the quick nomination of one Democratic candidate and keep us fighting amongst ourselves, there is a much greater chance of a serious rift within the Party, and disgruntled factions from whichever side looses are likely to vote with McCain or some other third party (Nader). Its all quite well orchestrated and impressive for it’s diabolical results. The news media won’t even recognize it for what it has become. Its worth pointing out that none of this would be an issue if Clinton were a true team player and recognized her campaign for what it has become and for who is supporting her.
A truly remarkable lack of leadership on her part by virtually any measure...
The national media market has become confused with the difference between NEWS and GOSSIP. I believe the rise to prominence of the trash magazines like the National Enquirer and blatantly partisan networks like Fox have largely derailed their ability to discern what is and what is not news (if in fact they ever really had that ability).
Barack Obama is out there day in and day out giving substantive talks on the policies and direction he would like to see the country move under his administration. He is the unquestionable leader on substance and yet most of what he says goes unreported in the news. I spent four hours last night flipping back and forth between CNN and MSNBC and found Rev. Wright to be the story about 85% of the time. Substance and issues should be the subject of at least more than 50% of politically oriented news shows.
I would certainly like to see the media learn how to put events in perspective. Journalists shouldn’t allow the “most sensational” story to dominate every news show. I realize Rev. Wright tried to make himself news again by his media blitz, but it did not warrant the degree of coverage it has received.
Journalists should pride themselves on their work and should try to help keep some perspective on the bigger picture. America deserves a chance to vote on a presidential candidate based on policy. Most people will never get a feeling for the candidate’s stance on the issues within today’s media circus frenzy. This type of coverage favors the Republican tactics of fear mongering and misinformation and has the tendency to turn the tide for candidates who are short on substance.
I believe it’s safe to say that most of us are very disappointed by the current state of the presidential race. I believe we all expected to face underhanded attacks propagated by Republicans, but the tag-team efforts of the far right with the Clinton machine were, well… unexpected, to say the least.
While Hillary slashes forward - with apparently nothing to loose - she continues on with the active support of many high ranking Democrats and Superdelegates.
I would like to urge each of you to look around and find out who these ranking Hillary supporters are in your towns, neighborhoods, cities, and districts. These individuals have made a conscious decision to perpetuate this split in our Party and they must be held accountable for their actions. I plan to let those in my districts know that I will plan to strongly support any Democratic opponent that may run against them and I will urge others in my area to do the same.
There will be a price to pay for their participation in this Democratic debacle – hold them all accountable!
This is a partial list of Hillary’s Superdelegates and supporters in here in Texas - I will be adding others in the future
HilLIARy (HRC) makes claims of Barack Obama not being able to WIN one LARGE STATE which is IMPORTANT in order to be able to win the Presidential Election. First, this is a LIE!!! OBAMA WON TEXAS – once all votes were tallied AND the caucuses concluded, he went away with MORE DELEGATES than she!!! It was 94 HRC to 99 OBAMA!!! Granted, it took a while for it to be decided but OBAMA WON! I am sure he has won other large delegate rich states, but I know about TX because I live here.
Next, HRC wants to MISLEAD (LIE) US in thinking; only SHE can win the most important states. She fails to view ALL states are important wins PLUS the states where HRC is winning ALWAYS VOTE DEMOCRAT!!! No matter what… these states not only trend BLUE but are so BLUE, nothing could turn them RED!!!
The trick is; to get the RED states to go BLUE – all of which OBAMA CAN AND IS DOING!!! He has won more states and nearly ALL RED states. HRC is TRYING to twist truth (LIE) by OMITTING; OBAMA leads in every category AND leads TWICE as many states - she discounts the states WORTH, something I find highly INSULTING. * Her discounting days she is skillful at because; she used to work for Wal-Mart corp. for years.
Please read these quotes:
Hillary Clinton said if Barack Obama does not win Pennsylvania despite his huge campaign war chest, people ought to ask the question, “Why can’t he close the deal?”… “With his extraordinary financial advantage, why can’t he win a state like this one if that’s the way it turns out?” Clinton asked. “Obviously we have a long way to go before people are finished voting and the votes are counted. This will be one more in a long line of big states, states that Democrats have to win.”(CBS News)
DO NOT BE FOOLED, OBAMA CAN and WILL win the RED as well as the BLUE and ALL STATES ARE IMPORTANT. Does anyone else feel HRC keeps INSULTING more and more people??? Does anyone else see a trend in HilLIARy’isms???
Hang in there, YES WE CAN!
Chris Gardner
To whom it concerns… I hope it concerns all who read this,
In the site located above, please review what was written in the NYT and tell me, is it not time to take action??? Is it not time Gov. Howard Dean & associates, to end a fight where the outcome will NOT result in giving Hillary what she wants??? The numbers just aren't there and never will be!!!
This race MUST NOT go on to Denver! OUR PARTY IS DESTROYING OUR CHANCE TO WIN THE WHITE HOUSE!!! Wasn't "Super Delegates" created to fix an issue such as this (?) to END a "BITTER" drawn out battle? Clearly, there is but ONE winner here and it is the one who has the lead in delegates, populous and total number of states!!!
I HAD decided to vote straight ticket for Democrats... but this is getting stupid. I WAS going to vote for whomever the winner was - Obama OR HRC – I really was. Now, (*AFTER her negativity and LYING about something CLEARLY proven otherwise and NEVER APOLOGIZING TO ANYONE for her LIE **she took credit and admitted she got it wrong ***LIED, but no one saw an apology - a reminder of how the Clintons do business), I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HER, EVER!!!
Please watch the above IF you are unaware of her comments of using NUCLEAR BOMBS!
She had her chance - SHE BLEW IT. SHE KEEPS BLOWING IT, using NUKES on IRAN??? This is what OUR PARTY decided to run AGAINST the REPUBLICANS and SHE BRINGS UP NUKES??? OH MY GOD! This is completely and totally against what our party CLEARLY uses as our platform, IN THIS ELECTION. CLEARLY AGAINST WHAT WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE U.S. AND THE WORLD TO SEE DIFFERENT ABOUT OUR PARTY and COUNTRY, yet she destroys it in ONE sentence, ONE interview. Gov. Dean, this goes AGAINST your OWN policies, practices and platform! WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT THIS???
EXTREMELY CONCERNED for OUR PARTY,
DNC Chairman - Howard Dean *website select “issues” and place your statement there

One of these “other” two is the current front runner and has chosen to run a clean campaign where the merits of a candidate’s position on the issues are of paramount importance.
The other has decided that adopting the strategy of slash and burn will pay the highest dividends. This candidate has shown that truth is a burden and that the means justifies the ends.
The choice is simple.
