I would like to thank the guests that showed up at our humble home last night, bringing gifts, food, plum wine and plum grappa...YUM! Stephanie Shellabarger, Lois and Steve Webster, Nicola Yarbrough, Joan Rosati , Daniel Herman who rushed home from work and my son Sean O'Brien who even managed to do his homework. We had a blast and the speech was amazing. Put it simply...I love my president and everything he is willing and does stand for. Namely we the people. On facebook, Traci Kelly of Equal Time Radio posted a Link about Rep Joe Wilson who heckled President Obama:
http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/09/10/obama-speech-disrupter-a-health-industry-darling/
Were we all not shocked by that? President Obama is always such a cool cucumber that is it very surprising when people are rude and even obnoxious about him. It is such a strange thing. My husband who is very quiet and humble himself said about Wilson "how do we fire that guy?" we need to get him out. At the time it felt like what he was doing was not only rude but illegal...
We sat through many speech of President Bush and he was not heckled. Democrats I believe as a rule are more polite.
The link that Traci submitted on Facebook points out that Rep Joe Wilson was paid thousands and thousands of dollars by the insurance industry as well as others. It is simply sickening. We see him as a "purchased" disrupter. Bought and paid for by the industries and not the people he is elected to help and protect. It makes us sick, except we cannot get sick because we cannot afford our health insurance premiums as a small contractor, self-employed.
Go Barack!
We know some progressives are upset because we will not have single payor option and immediately...but we recognize we want evolution and not revolution and President Obama is making headway, especially we hope into the hearts of middle America who have been the victims of fear mongering by people like Representative Joe Wilson.
Keeping Americans well and healthy should be considered a patriotic duty. A healthy and well America is a strong America. Please spread the word about Joe Wilson.
As to where the money for this recovery should come from...frankly it's time to pull back on military spending just as we pull back our troops from the Iraq invasion. Yes, I'm ex-military myself, but we need to really resist the urge of investing in building military programs, facilities and weapons right now. There are too many much more important needs, including those in roads, environment, health, energy, our power-grid as well as protecting our ports, nuclear plants and water systems from terrorism.
If Obama has as much guts as he is smart, he can create a significant stimulus program by diverting military funds to programs which create a more direct impact on our lives, our economy, our health and our internal security. We have alot of these needs right in our own area.
The IdeaMan
The Mamas for Obama are at it again!
This time we're planning a kid-friendly phone bank. Come join us two days before election day to Get Out the Vote and talk to the remaining undecided voters.
On Sunday, 11/2 from 10:45 AM until 1:45 PM we will be working the phones for Obama. We'll also set up the kids making Obama art - stencils, stickers, glitter, and glue, the kids are sure to have a good time making signs and other projects that can then be used on Election Day to help Get Out the Vote.
It's pot luck so bring something to share. If you have a cell phone and/or a laptop, please bring them along too. Additional art supplies are also welcome.
Now is the time to get involved, otherwise you might wake up on November 5th and realize that the chance for change has passed us by. Please, help us make sure that doesn't happen!

Senator Obama, I am a big supporter of your campaign - but as a business owner, veteran and long-time Democrat I am pretty concerned with how you are responding on the economy issue. This is a real opportunity for you to show us all exactly how serious you are about making a real 'change' in the way things are always being done.
Senator Obama, if you really want to show people like us that we can 'believe' you represent change, we need you to suggest solutions that are more transformational, unique, creative, and innovative than anything that's been done before. Serious solutions that help quickly....deeply...effectively and without costing taxpayers more huge sums of money.
Innovative solutions perhaps like:
- Immediately capping adjustable mortgage interest increases (so homeowners don't have to worry about higher payments or foreclosures)...
- Putting unemployed people back to work rebuilding our deteriorating infrastructure (roads, mass transit, parks, environmental protection, schools, security, etc)....
- Creating a short term ‘bridge' insurance program (similar to the FDIC) that will enable banks to defer payments for up to 120 days when someone loses their job due to a company closure or layoff (this won't require assuming ownership of the underlying asset, and could greatly enhance bank lending confidence)....
- Creating a ‘Foreign Displacement Tax’ for each job large companies create overseas (instead of in the US)
- Capping the retail price of gas and heating oil (so oil companies stop gouging consumers and are forced to seek more profitable alternative energy themselves)....
- Requiring the Iraqi's to PAY us for the security our troops are providing (from the billions in our oil money). This might even help end our involvement quickly.
Senator Obama, you are by far the better candidate, but in this economic mess, please show us that you can deliver the change you promise. Show us that you can be an innovator, a leader, a change-agent and an "Idea man". Your political future - and our entire country's economic future - are at stake. Now is the time.
Thank you to the organizers of the Honesty Demonstration in Seattle Westlake Park! Andrew Caldwell gave away awesome buttons and we believe Fox News Channel 13 picked up the story...it probably will be distorted! We met photographers, young and old and traffic in Seattle was honking and waving like crazy. Everyone is volunteering to get out the vote! Thank you all for your hard work and dedication. All Obama supporters, friends and family everywhere you are simply awesome!

And one more thing. I've heard republicans accusing the democrats of being sexist toward their VP pick, Sarah Palin. Rudy G. said in his speech last night that we (democrats) asked the question 'how is she (Sarah) going to be VP and manage a family' (paraphrased, not a direct quote). Rudy then said "we'd never ask a man that". However, last night and tonight I saw NUMEROUS republicans sporting buttons that said "Hottest VP" and "Hooziers (sp?) for the Hot Chick" ... is this not sexist??? This is incredibly sexist and disrespectful toward Sarah Palin specifically and women in general. She should speak up about this blatant sexism in her own party-but wait, that would require her to show some integrity. OK, so possibly someone in the republican party who may have some integrity (is there maybe one out there?) who might suggest that it looks bad when your own party participates in making you look like the girl who got the job because "she's hot"? That "sweet little small town "hot chick"? You can almost see the looks on the faces of the old, white, republican males winking at eachother, whispering to one another "ain't she a little spitfire?!?" How degrading-and from her own party!
OBAMA/BIDEN 08!!! *(PLEASE GOD!!!)

Time for a CHANGE in Congress as well as in the White House. Frustrated that Congress has not held Bush and Cheney accountable? If we don't send better people to Congress, Barack Obama will have a tough time getting REAL CHANGE through.
If you live in the 6th Congressional District in WA state, your US Rep is currently Norm Dicks. Dicks has had a very disappointing voting record in support of the George W Bush agenda. He has voted repeatedly to give Bush hundreds of billions more of our tax dollars to throw down the rat hole in Iraq, including the latest bill authorizing another $162 Billion dollars that Bush demanded. Dicks voted for another of Bush's demands--the FISA bill authorizing spying on Americans and shielding the telecoms from lawsuits who broke the law with Bush. And he has supported the Patriot Act, further eroding our Constitution and civil liberties. Is this the kind of Democrat we want--or can we do better?!
I believe it is time for a new, progressive representative in the 6th Dist. Someone who will vote with OUR interests, not the GOP and big corporations. Someone who will listen to his constituents, not his corporate donors.
That candidate is Paul Richmond. Please go to www.richmond4congress.com and SUPPORT PAUL in the August 19th primary!
BREAKING NEWS: Norm Dicks' former campaign manager from 2006 has expressed his disappointment with Dicks' record and has now announced his endorsement of Paul Richmond for Congress--full announcement at www.richmond4congress.com

Although this is my first post here (I'm not really the blogging type), most people who are likely to read this know that I've been volunteering for the Obama campaign in Tacoma. Now the Fellows program is unfortunately drawing to a close, and this is my last week. This post is not about the Fellowship, however; it's about things peripheral to it.
I've been surprised at how easy it was to transition from my previous jobs, which mostly involved manual labor in the middle of nowhere, into a job that requires constant human interaction. It's remarkably satifsying, in a quite different way than planting trees or counting fish. At the end of the day, I still have a lot of energy left over.
Living in Tacoma has taught me a lot. I've met many amazing people who volunteer so much time and energy to the campaign, on top of already busy schedules, and still want to do more. I've also worked in communities I'd never been a part of before, which is always an experience I value. The whole reason I signed up to be a Fellow was to expand my horizons. But I also learned that in Tacoma, it isn't quite as easy to do some of the things I took for granted in Port Townsend. Going hiking, for example, requires a battle with the soul-crushing traffic on Meridian or I-5. Getting out of the city, in general, is more of an ordeal than getting out of a small town. (More interesting stuff after the jump).
