Alison des Forges
ARUSHA (AFP) — The court trying alleged perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide was stunned Saturday at the death in an air crash of the top expert on the 1994 massacres, Alison Des Forges.
Des Forges, 66, an expert advisor to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and human rights groups, was among the 50 victims of Thursday's plane crash near Buffalo, New York.
"It is with deep shock that the tribunal has learned of the tragic disappearance of Alison des Forges, "a spokesman for the UN tribunal based in Arusha, Tanzania, told AFP.
"It is a great loss for the world of human rights, international justice and all humanity," Roland Amoussouga said.
"Alison was not only an expert but also a very committed militant," he added." It is a great loss for the world of human rights, international justice and the whole of humanity," he said.
Des Forges appeared as an expert witness in 11 trials for genocide at the ICTR, three trials in Belgium, and at trials in Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Canada.
Her book "No Witness Must Survive" is regarded as the reference work on the Rwandan genocide.
"She was one of the topmost authorities on the history and politics of Rwanda," ICTR prosecutor Hassan Bubacar Jallow said in a statement.
"As a world renowned expert in this field, her knowledge, professionalism and commitment to justice assisted the ICTR and indeed the world at large tremendously -- through her writings, her expert reports and her oral testimony spanning several trials before the tribunal -- acquire a better understanding of the genesis and course of the tragedy of the Rwanda genocide of 1994."
He added, "Dr Des Forges has made an indelible contribution to the cause of international criminal justice and to the cause of human rights."
Des Forges was also a senior adviser to Human Rights Watch, whose boss Kenneth Roth called her "truly wonderful, the epitome of the human rights activist - principled, dispassionate, committed to the truth and to using that truth to protect ordinary people."
"She was among the first to highlight the ethnic tensions that led to the genocide, and when it happened and the world stood by and watched, Alison did everything humanly possible to save people," Roth added.
Text of President Barack Obama's inaugural address on Tuesday, as prepared for delivery and released by the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
OBAMA: My fellow citizens:
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.
Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.
So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.
That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.
Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.
We remain a young nation, but in the words of scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.
For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.
Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.
This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.
Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.
What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.
Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control — and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart — not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.
For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.
To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.
For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.
Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of citizenship.
This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.
This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.
So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:
"Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it)."
America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.
I do believe that only Obama has the best solutions for this crisis-if by ignorance, Americans do vote for Mccain this coming November, it is going to be worse. Dear Americans, be wise, and vote with your mind focused on what is going to happen to USA tomorrow, if a republican president is back in the White House. I am telling you, it is time now to put behind those little thinking or excuses, such as Obama is inexperienced! Trust me, he is far away better than MCcain on the Economy. You will not regret your vote. Vote for Obama today, no complaints tomorrow. Vote for MCcain, you will have complaints all your next 8 years, and nobody will listen to you, even me.
It is amazing how true it is to say that we should first take the speck out of our eyes before we try to get out the log from the other person's. Last weeekend, I did some canvassing around my neighborhood and saw only one person who was not registered to vote. I thought it was a good sign because everyone is engaged.
Strangely enough on Monday 10/6, a colleague came to my office and saw my Obama Poster and she said "Whao! you must be a big supporter." I said I was and asked if she wasn't. She said she supported him and I urged her to vote and casually added, "you are registered to vote, aren't you?" And the shocker came-NO. As teachers signed themselves out, I asked each one if they were registered and I had 8 unregistered voters. This is a small school and up to 8 supporters were not registered. They are all registered now though. So please, even if you think they are, assume they are not and just ask your friends, colleagues, neighbors and relatives. You might be in for a shocker. You think the people out there are the ones to go after and neglect to check on those around you.
Even when the polls seem to favor us, we should not let our eyes off the ball. The finish line is on November 4 and I know together we can do this. Good luck everybody and keep up the good work!
Joe Biden tackled the issue of Darfur, appeared Presidential, connected with older voters, and gave them hope that an Obama / Biden ticket would work hard to come up with fair and lasting solutions for our crises both in the economy and in providing affordable health care.

the title of this message is the principle I follow in life. I was brought in an environment on competitive and competant education where stress on higher learning was a minimum requirement. I came to US 18 yrs ago to do my post graduate work in engineering. Since then I have noticed a steady decline in ability to innovate despite leading the IT revolution by us (USA). This is due to the fact that most of the americans want quick buck. I read a lot about the generation that fought in WWII. The biggest difference I see is they understood value of paying dues to earn living and respect versus sense of increaed entitlement that dominates our society today. I also see increase in ability in Asian countries to innovate. Looking back being part of the education race in India has resulted in enormous capability that was fostered over 2 generations that has been unlished due to free market entry for India. that's alaraming for us. The tools for information gathering and execution for a successful eneterprise were only avaiable to western world are now available to anybody. Hence the onus is on us to be prepared with right foundation to use these tools to our advantage. This is the only way we can be top of the food chain and not chasing the Chinese and Indians.
while we are spending borrowed money on maintainijng our military superiority, they are investing in people and the country. I see barack as our hope to put us back in the leadership position with balanced fiscal policies. He comes from humble background and has earned everything through hard work and doing it the right way.
I hope the readers, especially young ones are getting the message that we will need to work hard just like previous generations to get ahead. there is no easy way. there is no quick buck through wall street. its only through providing tangile products and services that increase the GWP (gross world product).
lets get some technical skills as a foundation and build business skills not other way around.
warm regards

Renegade Republican House members voting no on the bailout package yesterday ultimately defeated the bailout bill. It is suggested that their plan had been to peg the democrats along with Bush to being responsible for the passage of an unpopular bailout of Wall Street at the expense of Main Street. The political gamble failed and ultimately left egg on the face of McCain. Failure to pass the Wall Street bailout bill hands Republican John McCain and the Bush Administration a Stunning Defeat.

It is clear to me that many Americans just do not understand how politics work, what constitutes political suicide, and why pandering only to the fringes either on the left or the right is a bad way forward for this country. For example Obama has been very clear that he opposed going into Iraq from the start. But since he was not President at the time and clearly the Republican controlled congress and Republican President thought otherwise, there isn't a lot that Obama can do to change the past. We can moan and cry and close our eyes and stamp our feet but the fact remains WE the American public did not stop the Iraq invasion when we could of. Blaming Obama for not ending the Iraq war is ridiculous. The fact is we are there now. The damage has been done and now it would be completely irresponsible to just wipe our hands of the mess we have created. So here we are, it is September 30th, 2008, and Barack has been talking about ways to wind down the war in Iraq and get our troops out in the most responsible manner both to our troops and to the Iraqi people. But of course people on the left fringe are outraged that Obama is not absolute enough in saying that we should pull out the troops ASAP and the fringes on the right are calling him a "cut and runner" and someone who doesn't support the troops and all kinds of other ridiculous talking points.
The fact of the matter is that Obama is our best chance to move the country forward but he alone can’t do anything by himself. He is only as strong as the overall public opinion is. If 80% of Americans think offshore drilling is the solution then WE are at fault for not better educating the American public as to why this is not true and is in fact harmful. It isn't the responsibility of Obama or any politician for that matter to reverse public opinion for or against a particular issue. It is Obama's job to lead and efficiently direct the bottom up groundswell that he is trying to create. Without that groundswell Obama is just another tiny voice in a sea of inconsequential politicians and fringe 3rd party candidates.
On the other hand someone like Caribou Barbie is all about placating and pandering to the fringes on the right.
Get Active and Get out the VOTE!!
It will happen folks. Barack will be the next President of the United State of America. For all those that are sitting there reading this post and wondering how the polls can be so close, don't be worried. The polls are very misleading. The polls are only based on Registerd Voters that are likely to vote who have a land-line telephone. That was a lot in one sentence but let me break it down for you. The Obama Campaign and the DNC have worked their tails off trying to register new voters for this historic election. I do not have the exact figure but I know that we have signed up millions upon millions of new voters who are frustrated with the direction this country has been going and want change. Most of these are folks, like I said, have not voted before. Also, some may have moved to a new state/location and just hadn't registered yet. They realize that the change they need and that this country needs is Barack Obama! Well, the folks who are just now registering to vote are not considered in those polls. That is a huge percentage of American's who were not called. In addition and this is the most important statement, those being polled are being called on land-line phones. 40% of this countries citizens who are eligible to vote DO NOT have a land-lind phone. They have cell phones and therefore are not included in the polling data. We all know that most people who have cell phones with no land-line phones are young people between the ages of 18 and 35. We also know that most people between those ages, especially the ones between 18 and 25, will be voting democrat as they see their future slipping out of their control with the Republicans in control. No Jobs, No Social Security, Declining Wages, The views of our country around the world, Our Education System, etc. We could go on and on. Granted, we can't stop working and we won't but don't let the polls fool you. Barack Obama has a grassroots campaign built on HOPE, CHANGE, LEADERSHIP, REPSECTIBILITY and TRUST! It has spread across this country like wildfire and will continue to grow.
I leave you with one thing to ask yourself when you are confronted by someone who is so adamant that Barack Obama not get elected. DO THEY HAVE HOPE? Just ask them that. It's a simple question. People critize the whole HOPE and CHANGE that Barack Obama is running on but now McCain is using that in his commercials. There is only one person that can bring the change we want and that is Obama!

Billions for Bailouts! Who Pays?
Summary: The current financial crisis facing our country has been caused by the extreme right-wing economic policies pursued by the Bush administration. These policies, which include huge tax breaks for the rich, unfettered free trade and the wholesale deregulation of commerce, have resulted in a massive redistribution of wealth from the middle class to the very wealthy.
This is an excellent plan by Senator Bernie Sanders that I think all progressive leaders and congresspeople should at least read. Hopefully Barack Obama can get behind some, if not all, of the points in this economic plan.
There is no reason why middle class America should be fleeced on the way up and on the way back down by the Republican elite. Republican policy of "socializing risk" on the backs of middle American taxpayers has got to end.
Senior citizens are among our most vulnerable and they will vote for a president that they think can reverse the course of our economy and fix our broken healthcare system. McCain has brought into serious doubt whether he has the ability or will to tackle either of these problems and tried a method of distraction to keep everyone's eyes off our economy and healthcare system in crisis. It is time to regain the focus on these issues for Obama. Recent polling in Florida as of yesterday indicates that Florida is back in play for Obama. If Obama takes Florida from McCain, Obama wins hands down.

The bump that the Republican ticket got after their convention has made some supporters very worried. Some of my friends tell me what we should have or shouldn’t have done. I see their concern and I try to assure them that they should have faith and work hard. Some, of course, have switched completely to the other camp because a woman has been made VP.
Yes, Hillary was not made the VP. But she has graciously given over her mantle to Barack Obama. What we have to ask ourselves is “Why did he pick SP as his running mate?” With all the stories around her, do you think she was properly vetted? That brings me to the core of my consternation. John McCain in his book said that he has always had ambition to become president. Seeing that it was slipping away, he decided to bring in a woman, to lure Hillary’s women. Well, that’s because he thinks women in the Democratic Party are stupid and in their anger they cannot tell right from wrong. And back to McCain and his VP choice- If he really thinks of advancing her career and working for the American public, he would let her speak to the public and not bubble her around him just to get the crowd on his side. Who is he fooling? Women or himself? Can he really say he picked his VP for her accomplishments or just to boost his ego and ambition to become president. How compromising!
The things he has said about himself, about others and against women, he tries hard now to plaster it on Obama to scare women away. McCain says terrible things about a young teenage first child, who calls his wife the C-word, who laughs when a states lady like Hillary is called the B-word and he laughs, and most of all disparages rape victims. Maybe he really believes that Americans are stupid. He needs to be educated in many issues on women and stop trying to make people believe that he wants a caretaker presidency that he would hand over in four years. We need a president who will work for us to change the last painful years into four prosperous and soft landing years.
Well, the Conventions are over for both political parties now. We can all agree that the Democratic National Convention was ground breaking and it was a great site to watch Obama accept his parties nomination for President. On the other hand, you had the Republicans who had nothing new to say. It was the same old rhetoric. Scare the American people into thinking that change at this time is not what this country needs. Please don't believe them. Change is the only thing that will save this country now. We cannot have another George Bush in the White House. Electing the McCain/Palin ticket would put this country into a tailspin that I don't think we can get out of. It will be hard enough as it is trying to follow quite possibly the worst President in this countries short history. However, don't be dismayed, it can be done. It will be DONE! The man to lead us IS and WILL BE Barack Obama!!! Keep working everybody. Do everything you can to get Obama elected. Donate Money. Donate Time. Talk to your friends and family about how important it is to vote for Obama in November. Challenge Republicans on their thinking. I have done so and have managed to turn a few leaning Republicans to Obama in November. We can do it! We will do it!
YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!

I am deeply offended and more than a little pissed off by her patronizing, cynical and nasty remarks about Senator Obama and Michelle. She is a mean snake. You can't kill a moose, bearing a smile like hers, and not be a mean, lowdown snake. She was direct and ugly. She gave the right speech to the party that feeds on war.

According to Sridhar Pappu of the Washington Independant, Barack Obama Has a Cold. I would like to share with the Senator and the Obama community, a soup recipe that I guarantee will relieve the icky nasties that come with this common ailment. Years ago, a chef friend made this soup for me and it has been the cure-all for myself and my wee family ever since. I promise that if you make this soup and drink a cup of it every four hours, you will feel better within 48. Now, on to the recipe:
INGREDIENTS/ITEMS* (no exact measurements - this is homestyle, y'all)
PREPARATION
As I advised above, drink/eat at least a cup of this soup every four hours. Make sure to finish the whole batch. Personally, I love the taste of mustard and turnip greens but some people don't. If you aren't a fan of greens, remind yourself that this soup is medicine. As well, I would love to offer a vegetarian alternative but there isn't any. Like the greens, the bone marrow from the chicken is absolutely necessary in order for this to work on your cold or flu.
**NOTE** Make sure to clean your hands and any surfaces when working with raw chicken. As with any illness, it's always best to consult a doctor. Just the same, the intention of this soup is to help you avoid the doctor and prescription medicines. We've gotten over many a bug because of this recipe. I hope it helps you as it has helped me.
You have noticed, in recent postings, that I was trying to give you some perspectives on what was going on in the other parts of the world, especially Africa. I wanted to make sure that, America doesn't get trapped in Nationalistic Campaign, and forget the other side of events, on what is happening in the world- I am deciding today, that my only focus is going to be, just contact my neighbors and invite them to join Barack Obama Campaign. I am assuming that I would be back with this international issues after November 2008.
Good Campaign Everyone!
