Former Clinton Campers Who Are Supporting Barack Obama

On a blog I regularly read called Electronic Village, author Wayne Hicks has compied a lst of what he calls former Team Clinton members who are supporting Barack Obama. Many of those on his list were closely associated with President Clinton's presidency. Most notably, Bill Richardson is the one that stands out due to his role in President Clinton's cabinet and because he has gotten the most media attention.

I am not in favor of spending my energy on what I perceive to be the negative tactics of my candidate's opponents. It is also usually my practice to "take the high road" as much as possible when debating the differences between the candidates. I cannot, however, help but pause and observe the facts on this one. The list itself makes its own statement, without me having to say it directly.

Rev. Wright and Moving Forward Exponentially

I have been reading all the e-mails since I joined the group back in February. But I really am compelled to join in on the discussion in light of the recent resurgence of Rev. Wright into the media and the homes of millions of Americans. I watched Rev. Wright on the Bill Moyers Journal and was very, very pleased that he was given a chance to be shown in a positive way. I was very impressed with the interview. On Sunday when I watched him speak at the NAACP event, I was lifted out the angry funk I had been in from viewing the sound bites that were shown of Rev. Wright, a million times a day, for roughly a month! Rev. Wright spoke intelligently and eloquently. He displayed in depth knowledge of the subject matter that he was discussing. He brillantly revealed the man that Sen. Obama has loved and admired for 20 years. But Rev. Wright should have stopped there! The Rev. Wright that was speaking on Monday in Washington did not resemble the Rev. Wright that I saw on Friday (Bill Moyers Journal) nor on Sunday (NAACP). I am disapppointed and outraged that Rev. Wright killed all the good that he accomplished over the weekend. Sen. Obama had no choice but to totally denounce him today. It is a shame that it had to come to this. Sen Obama really tried not to denounce the man. I am confident that for Rev. Wright to be as intelligent as he is, he was aware of the damage he would cause Sen. Obama. The media loves this kind of stuff! They will ponce and ponce on Sen. Obama until he's unrecognizable. (Meaning until he lets his unfiltered anger get the best of him and he tells someone off). I really don't think that will happen but they are trying to make it happen. The person who organized the media event on Monday for Rev. Wright is an avid supporter of Sen. Clinton. What were her motives for organizing that event? It seems to me that she knew that Rev. Wright would take the opportunity to put BOTH FEET into his mouth and give the media the opportunity once again to beat that dead horse! The saddest part of all this is that Sen. Clinton doesn't have to attack Sen. Obama when his own people are doing it for her. Sen. Clinton made it seem as though she was against what Rev. Wright had done on Monday by speaking out against it. But it was the Clinton supporter that laid the trap that Rev. Wright walked right into. Or perhaps they both knew what they were doing. Just speculation. The important issue right now is to again move past this distraction and focus, focus, focus on the issues at stake. We must go beyond what we would normally have done to support Sen. Obama. We must do twice as much. This is serious people! This is for the quality of life for ourselves, our children and grandchildren. What happens now will have an impact on the world. It is really time for a positive change. Let's rally exponentially behind Sen. Obama so that change can CONTINUE to shape a new United States, a new World!Veronica Dalyfrom Staten Island, NY

Talking to One Another

What Barack Obama's speech said to me was that many of the community problems and incidents that happen in America, are due to the fact that many of us do not sit down with one another and talk to each other. Race prejudice needs to be overcome. It has been around far too long and I think Barack has finally opened the door to begin discourse regarding race relations in America. Our time is NOW. We have this opportunity to elect the right person for this country. Barack shoed us once again he is the person to lead this country into a new future full of HOPE and CHANGE.

Now, What Is Next?

First, we became inspired. Then, we became organized. Next, we worked hard. We reached the petition signature goal early to place Senator Obama and our full slate of delegates upon the Primary Ballot in our District. We spent our rent money on the Verrazano Bridge tolls. Then, we registered hundreds of new voters in our District. Next, the wonderful devoted supporters and delegates of the 13th Congressional District canvassed our neighborhoods, leaving no commuter's hand free of literature and no pizzeria, barber shop or bodega without an Obama '08 sign (John Turturro and Sal Albanese certainly made this easier in Bay Ridge...thanks!). Then, we couldn't open a paper or turn on the television without seeing some coverage of the 13th Congressional District. Finally, we surpassed the Campaign's expectations for the 13th Congressional District by electing two (2) delegates to the Democratic National Convention.  Though it is time for us to catch our breath and be proud of our accomplishments, it is not time to stop. OUR time to rest will be January 21, 2009, the day after Senator Barack Obama takes the oath of office as our President of the United States. But, before we continue to move forward, here is the breakdown of the voting trends from Super Tuesday: 13th Congressional District 64% (HRC)/36% (BHO)
Kings County 49.59% (HRC)/48.03% (BHO)
State of New York 57% (HRC)/40% (BHO)
Total Delegates to Senator Obama 93
Total Delegates to Senator Clinton 138

Senator Obama 65%
Senator Clinton 32%
Though our favorite Senator is doing very well, this challenge is far from over. As New Yorkers, it can be difficult to sit on the sidelines and just wait to see what happens in other states. So, what is next and what can we do?     HERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN DO BETWEEN NOW AND THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION: 1. SPEAK UP AND STAY UP TO DATE. Just because our Primary has passed does not mean that we, both as supporters and New Yorkers, are not still in the spotlight. As aforementioned, Senator Obama made an incredibly strong showing in Senator Clinton's homestate, PARTICULARLY in Kings County. Friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and fellow commuters might be paying more attention now that they understand that we are midst one of the longest primary battles in recent history. In order to keep people focused, we need to keep talking, wearing our buttons, and remain positive, friendly and fired up. Continue to follow every election and caucus. Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 12th, is Primary Day for Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., February 19th is Wisconsin and Hawaii's Primary date, and March 4th is all about Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island, followed by Wyoming on March 8th, Pennsylvania on April 22nd, Guam on May 3rd, Indiana and North Carolina on May 6th, West Virginia on May 13th, Kentucky and Oregon on May 20th, Montana and South Dakota on June 3rd and, finally, Puerto Rico on June 7th. What we have to remember is that the more people with whom we speak about Senator Obama, the more the likelihood that the information will be passed onto voters in these upcoming Primary states. One of the most striking experiences on Election Day was talking to voters before and after voting at their polling places. Third-Party registrants, who knew that they could note vote in the Primary, came to polling locations to check the register just in case they were still registered Democrats and, therefore, able to vote for Obama in the Primary. Republicans remarked that Barack will be their candidate of choice in November. People who were not registered to vote left our visibility locations with voter registration cards, declaring their intent to vote for Obama at the General Election. Keep talking, continue being hopemongers, and stay fired up. Travel to primary states is a great way to spend a long weekend or upcoming Spring Break. Chris is currently in Virginia, and New York supporters are already in the process of organizing several trips to Ohio and Texas. If you have an opportunity to travel to an upcoming contest state, please visit that particular state's homepage on BarackObama.com and offer your assistance.   To keep up-to-date about upcoming group trips from New York, please e-mail trips@newyorkobama.com.  3. PHONEBANKING.  As we all know from experience, phonebanking works. Feeling Good About Phone Banking

I have been participating in phone banking as a volunteer here, both locally and nationally and find it a particular easy thing to do, convenient because you can do it from your own home and a good use of my free cell phone minutes. Although tonight I had limited time, I found that I could make 20 phone calls to voters in Louisiana.

I would encourage every supporter to consider signing up, if you haven't done so already. With Super Tuesday now behind me and my New York primary over, I find I can still be involved, excited and inspired in this campaign by making a significant contribution talking to voters all over the country on the phone.

This website makes it easy for anyone to participate. The scripts are there as a guide, in case you are shy about what to say. There are conference calls you can listen to in order to prepare yourself, too. If a voter is undecided or indicates that they have a question about Barack, I find that for me, it is easier if I speak from my heart. I use the scripts as a guide, but usually pick one or two issues that I know are reasons I support Barack Obama for President and present them with all the passion and spirit when the opportunity arises.

Not all voters want to know why I support Obama and not all voters want to talk to a complete stranger. But when they do, it is so exciting! Tonight's calls got me so excited as I had one woman saying she supports Barack Obama "100 times 10%" and another one who proclaimed that everyone in her household was going to vote for him on Saturday.

I had an unusual story, too, of an elderly gentleman who is an Obama supporter but wanted to confirm his polling place for Saturday. The website makes it easy and suggests we refer the voter to the website to look it up. I felt in my heart that this man had probably never touched a computer and when i suggested he go to the website, my hunches were confirmed. So I offered looking it up for him and politely asked for his address so I could do the search. He gave it to me, but a message came up saying it was incorrect, so I offered to call him back. I didn't want to lose a potential supporter!

After a minute or two, I realized that the website is a bit particular about how you enter the address and all I had to do was write "W' instead of "West" to get my results. So I called the man back. He was extremely grateful: perhaps a bit too much as he then asked me if I was married and if we could continue talking by phone later on! I have to say that it made me smile, but I politely declined and no harm was done. Regardless of his motives, I truly believe that this man did appreciate my willingness to call him back and it's this kind of kindness that will be remembered in this campaign.

So, I urge all supporters to take at least an hour of your time and sign up for phone banking. Encourage your friends and family to join in, too. You will feel good and know that you ARE making a difference.

Poll Watchers Needed For Tuesday's Primary!

Barack Obama: The Best Candidate for U.S Foreign Policy

Most people would probably agree that any President of the United States needs skills in foreign diplomacy. The urgency of this necessity today cannot be overstated. Our relations with the world have been damaged by the current administration. We can no longer take the “bully” approach that the present administration has often exerted when it didn’t get its way. This is precisely one of the reasons that we have lost respect in the eyes of many from other countries. The “bully” approach doesn’t work: it alienates us from nations that once were our allies, creates new enemies, strengthens existing anti-American sentiments and creates fear and intimidation which can lend itself to more conflicts, including war. We clearly need a leader with the strength to negotiate, lead, inspire and work effectively with the diversity of today’s governments and their leaders. We need a leader who can bring back respect to our country, while pursuing the resolution of conflicts, and promoting peace through cooperative and collaborative efforts. We need a leader who can communicate effectively with cultures different from our own. I believe that the best leader for our country is Barack Obama.

I’ve heard some people claim that Barack Obama’s has less foreign policy experience than his opponents. I strongly disagree with this sentiment. In my opinion, Barack Obama is the only candidate with the experience that counts when it’s needed the most: in times of disagreements, conflicts and misunderstandings.

So what are the characteristics and qualities that Barack Obama has to lead us in foreign affairs? First of all, he has a willingness to sit down and listen with those who are on opposing sides. This is a giant first step in opening a door that has been too often closed by the current administration. He will not try to “bully” the parties into accepting the notion of “our way or the highway” notion of politics. This will help restore respect for our country by starting a dialogue, which is a necessary first step.

Secondly, he has the experience in effectively bringing together diverse points of view for a common cause, His leadership as one of the sponsors of a bipartisan bill in the Illinois State Senate on the Gift Ban Act (a major ethics bill) is no small accomplishment! In addition, his campaign clearly shows that he is able to deliver a message of hope for people from diverse walks of life: young and old, rich and poor, across all the major political parties, racial and ethnic lines, urban and rural, and the working class and the elite.

Third, he has the cultural competencies needed to diplomatically lead our country and the world. As an international educator for over 25 years, I know that a significant experience living, studying or working abroad can open our minds and hearts to others so very different than ourselves. It can introduce us to new views, behaviors and attitudes while developing skills that can effectively communicate with these differences. Strong, significant experiences abroad develop strong cultural competencies in a person that allows one to communicate effectively across cultures. This paves the way for diplomatic leadership. The same can be true for people growing up in bicultural and biracial families. Barack Obama has all of these life experiences.

It is precisely the area of significant cross-cultural experience where I believe that Barack Obama stands out from the other Presidential candidates. Barack’s foreign experiences and with diverse cultures here in the U.S. was gained as he was growing up and over significant periods of time. This is different than someone who has visited a lot of foreign countries, perhaps in the political or touristic context. While exposure to other countries and cultures can be instrumental in helping us to truly see another person’s point of view, the context and the length of time in a foreign country help determine one’s ability to learn the skills to effectively deal with the situations that arise due to differences. Living in a foreign country exposes a person to the everyday life of that place, even if one lives in homes with other Americans or with other foreigners. It forces us to be exposed to other points of views and to learn valuable cross-cultural skills that can improve our perceptions about what is really happening, improve communication and overall understanding. Barack’s experience in this area truly shines above all the rest.

His father was from Kenya, married to a white woman from Kansas. Barack grew up in Hawaii, and spent several years in Indonesia. While there, he attended school, where significant social skills are developed. In addition, he is bicultural, biracial and his stepfather was Indonesian as well. All of these life experiences truly make him stand out from the usual political candidates we are used to seeing and are one of the main reasons I believe he is the best candidate for the U.S. Presidency. He has demonstrated skills in cross-cultural competencies, which give me hope for real change.

Finally, Barack Obama supports causes that are in sound agreement with international diplomacy and understanding. He was against the war in Iraq from the beginning, at a time when it was not so politically popular to do so. Currently, he is one of several co-sponsors of the bipartisan Senator Paul Simon Bill Foundation (S. 991) in the Senate. The bill seeks to establish a foundation in the late Senator Simon’s name to promote study abroad programs for U.S. students.

As an international educator, it is well known in the field the importance that both bringing foreign students and scholars to the U.S. and sending U.S. students abroad play in our U.S. foreign policy. Many of the foreign students and scholars develop positive images of the U.S. and go home to be leaders in their fields, if not their countries. U.S. students learn valuable cross-cultural skills and knowledge from their study abroad experiences which make them valuable and competitive leaders. We need more international educational exchange for the future of our planet, and the younger, the better.

As one of the co-sponsors of this bill, Barack understands the importance that international educational exchange plays in our planet’s future. I am proud to see his name attached to that bill, and know deep in my heart that he truly understands the importance of international education as part of a sound, foreign affairs policy.

We need more leaders like Barack Obama: leaders who can lead diplomatically, intelligently and respectfully in all kinds of conditions. Won’t you join me in supporting him on February 5th?

Obama and Pro-Choice

Today I discovered a few videos on YouTube about the truth about Obama's beliefs and record on pro-choice issues. They were done in response to misinformation put out by Clinton. I found them through the Women for Obama groups.

Since there are so many bloggers out here and I know no one person can read them all, I decided to post links to 2 of the videos here. One is from Lorna Brett Howard, a former President of NOW in Chicago who recently switched her support from Clinton to Obama and the other is from Angela Padilla, a latina attorney/activist in San Francisco. Please pass them on to all people you know who are pro-choice (especially those who are undecided!).

Take the 1 or 9 trains to the final stop, South Ferry at Whitehall Street. You can connect to the Staten Island Ferry from the subway terminal.

Take the Staten Island Ferry (about 25 minutes) to Saint George terminal.

When arriving on Staten Island....

By train (Staten Island Railroad) to Muddy Cup:

Take train to Stapleton (2nd stop).

Walk on Gross Street to Bay Street.

Cross Bay Street.

Take immediate RIGHT on Union Place. Walk one block.

Bear RIGHT on Beach Street.

Turn LEFT on Van Duzer Street (Muddy Cup is 388 Van Duzer Street).

By bus to Muddy Cup:

Take bus 78 (on Ramp D) to Saint Pauls Avenue.

Get off at Beach Street. Walk one block.
