An open letter regarding Health Insurance Reform to President Barack Obama and the Democratic Members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate

Dear Honorable Sirs and Madams,

About this time two years ago, Democrats across the country started gearing up for the fight of our lives. Primary elections were just around the corner, and it would be only a year until we would have our candidates for President and Vice President confirmed at our National Convention. Although some said that Democrats could put up an asparagus and beat the Republicans, most of us in the Democratic party knew all too well, after the disastrous results of the 2004 election, that this was going to be a hard-fought battle right to the finish line.

But this was not just about President and Vice President. This was about restoring the Democratic Party to a position of power to enact the legislation we must have to help move this country in the right direction. Millions of us in every state, took to the phones and the streets and the web. We rallied, we phone banked, we pounded the pavement knocking on doors. We talked to our neighbors, friends and business associates. We raised hundreds of millions of dollars, much of it five dollars at a time. And we did this for candidates on the Democratic ticket all across this nation.

We broke our backs, lost our voices, and some of us lost friends or other relationships, so that we could have a majority in both Houses, as well as regaining the Presidency. We gave you a huge majority in Congress and a filibuster-proof 60 votes in the Senate. We handed you the reins on a silver platter!

We did this because our party ran on what is perhaps the most important Domestic issue in many of our lifetimes; Health Insurance Reform. With people filing bankruptcy, losing their homes, and dying every single day from our broken and corrupt system, we don’t have the luxury of time to wait any longer.

You have a grave and serious responsibility before you. NOW is not the time to cave in to the Republican party! You don’t have to! You have an obligation to do the job we sent you to Washington to do – pass Health Insurance Reform, and to do it as you promised you would, with a strong PUBLIC OPTION.

To say that I am perplexed, to say that I am stunned, to say that I am angry would all be understatements. You have allowed Republicans to take over control of the message and hijack this legislation. Their constituents get to go to sleep at night knowing their representatives are fighting tooth and nail on their behalf, while we Democrats go to bed wondering why on earth we worked so hard to put you in the majority, when you’re letting us down when we need you to stand up for us the most!

Make no mistake, this legislation is going to be “make or break” for our party. If you can’t get it done when you have control of the Administration, the House of Representatives and the Senate, what’s the use of working to keep you there in the next election cycle(s)? You seem to have forgotten that you work for us – the people who put you in office, not the Republicans.

While I respect the concept of bi-partisanship, there comes a time when it simply must be abandoned. And in fact, I contend that if you show the Republicans that you will pass legislation with or without them, and they get a bill they don’t like, then next time they’ll be more likely to work with you so their voices are heard, won’t they?

It’s time.

Progressives, and even moderates in our party, you have to start putting the screws to the "Blue Dogs" who are looking more and more like the "Blue Cross Dogs" every day. And to those of you who are the "Blue Dogs", don't forget that you are Democrats. You ran as Democrats, you won as Democrats, and you have an obligation to legislate as Democrats, not moderate Republicans.

President Obama, you need to wrest back control of this message, and if necessary, write your own legislation and make sure it gets passed instead of passing the buck.

You have the power. Use it.

Post Election Thoughts, Inauguration, Military and Veterans Outreach

My concerns are that the military families and veterans that have worked so hard, may not be able to participate in the inauguration that they made possible! It upsets me that I have NOT heard back from Brian Bilbray, Senator Feinstein or any other representatives that I have contacted regarding tickets. We have made various request for volunteer opportunities, discounted and free tickets to balls and events, and we are still in a wait and see pattern. It is very costly and bureaucratic, and I fear that the group may not be able to attended this most historic event, that again they made possible. As we wait for information, housing and airfare become more difficult and out of reach. But, I am hopeful that we will find sponsors to sponsor our local military families and veterans to the inauguration. We currently are in need of air miles and lodging sponsors. We currently have a proposal into the Earl Stafford Foundation for inaugural travel assistance for our 32 member OC (Orange County) and San Diego Military and Veterans for Obama, a local group of Blue Star Military Families and Veterans for Obama. Which I serve as lead organizer for, and founded this summer.
We are extremely excited about attending the Obama Inaugural after traveling to 37 states and Puerto Rico, hosting over 180 events and raising over $25,000 collectedly for the campaign and for philanthropic organizations. The group finished the campaign in Florida, where we worked with Obama organizers deliver all 27 electoral college votes for Obama!
I am also very upset that local party organizers are not making inaugural parties affordable to students, seniors, the disabled or military families and veterans! It is very sad to see that even theSan Diego County Democratic Inaugural Party is out of reach for most at $85/$100 per ticket! This is NOT the Obama way! We are a movement of inclusion, not exclusion based on socioeconomic status. I personally have helped get plane tickets and organized travel for over 850 students, veterans, military family members, unemployed folks and those who could not afford to be a part of this movement, but wanted to volunteer. It is the roll of us as organizers to be mindful of the current economic conditions and plan events accordingly. We have to work on getting underwriters and sponsors for underrepresented groups.

As a 33 year old recent graduate school graduate, I understand all to well about the struggles of trying to find a job in this economy and trying to make ends meat. And this campaign trail, has given me much to be thankful for and to work toward. As a young black woman, I often was brought to tears thinking of my mother (who died of pancreatic cancer in 2005) would be saying or the shear enjoy of my grandparents to see this day come to come to pass, when not color but charisma, brilliance, political savvy and philanthropy motivated the Nation to elect the 44th President of the United States of America! And I feel that same way in being elected delegate in my congressional district where blacks make up only about 2% of the population! That is was I felt an obligation to fundraise and take San Diego's Finest with me!
My proudest moment in this campaign was being elected the National Delegate from the 50th Congressional District to the Democratic National Convention and taking a Military Families and Veterans Delegation of 26 with me! The best event of the whole week was working with the group to packing boxes for our troops at Camp Pendleton with Michelle Obama, her daughters, her mother and her brothers! I cried when we (Benjamin Bates, my fiance, managed the Delegation while I was on the floor of the Convention) were able to get all the families and their extended families into the Invesco Field for the ending ceremonies! This is what the Obama campaign and movement is all about philanthropy and service.
The group is focusing our attention on on the California Democratic Party's Assembly District Delegates races, where we are running our Blue Stars and Veterans in the their AD's to represent military families and veterans issues on the state level. We are working to establish military family members and veterans as a strong lobby with the CDP thru the Veterans Caucus and appointments to various committees with in the CDP. Our group has now found a home in the La Jolla Democratic Club. We are very excited to be joining forces with such an active and well established Democratic Club. The new president, Dr. Michael McQuarry has been a great advocate of our work and is helping us develop Democratic Military and Veterans outreach and assist us with our philanthropic work. Here in San Diego we are working with philanthropic organizations by volunteering, hosting events or raising money.
I am very interested in changing Democrats and Progressives feelings and views on the military and veterans. I believe we have much to do on the local level to constituency build among military families and veterans. San Diego County is a military county, and we must work with them, advocate for them and provide them a seat at the policy table. I see this is my new role in the movement. The military families and veterans are our pride and enjoy, and are what makes San Diego "America's Finest City." But thru out the nation it is NOT only our duty to work to end the war, but to support the military families and veterans that were innocently caught up in this conflict also!!! For to long Democrats have been sleeping at the wheel on outreaching to military families, troops and veterans. They overwhelming supported Obama this is our opportunity. It will not be easy because we have been MIA so long, and letting Republicans set the agenda. If you want a real rewarding challenge join us in helping and working with our troops, military families and veterans! Being Democrat, progressive or liberal does NOT mean anti-military, military families or veterans!!! Pro-Obama, Pro-Military!!!!!

John Mcsame is so used to saying he was a prisoner of war as the answer to almost any question, that he has gotten confused about when it makes sense and when it doesnt.

Or maybe, it is just that he uses the words "prisoner" and "my friends" so often that his synapses are just overloaded and failing him.

Not-So-Straight Talk Express--In the Ditch

Lots of people are linking to this piece by New York magazine's John Heilemann, which takes a crack at explaining how exactly McCain squandered his "maverick" brand.

The media went into revolt and painted the suspension stunt for the ruse it was, hurting McCain on the most important issue right now: The economic crisis.

Some Thoughts on Polls

As OB pulls ahead in Gallup 51-42% and he begins opening leads and widening margins in WI, NH, NV and other places, it is good to remember that you need to think about it like a basketball game; it aint over in the middle of the fourth quarter. And, it aint a soccer game either, so there is not stoppage time--which would have had HHH beat Nixon in 1968.

You gotta be ahead at the buzzer.

But BIG MO is a very good thing.

All that being said, there is always the Supreme Court--which makes it own rules and can erase or extend the clock.

Change That Reaches Nationwide

I had a wonderful experience today that illustrates what an amazing and effective network Barack has built nationwide.

I got a phone call from a woman in Georgia, asking if I could help her son vote.

Her son is crew on a cruise ship that docks in my town, San Pedro, CA., every week but his absentee ballot from Georgia is at his house there. She couldnt find an address to reach out to him and the company that runs the cruise line was not helpful either.

What did she do? She got on the Obama website and did a zipcode search for an event in San Pedro. She found the phone banks I am running and also my phone number. She called my up and bingo--another vote for Barack, and a new friendship for me. He docks this weekend and like my wife, he is a theater performer, doing Second City shows on the cruise ship.

Phone banking heaven

What a great day we had phone banking with the Harbor Area crew.

We made over 1500 calls and talked to people in Nevada, gettting them to the polls; and folks in the Harbor area, recruiting new people to join our team. Karen brought treats and Roz brought the phone lists and by the end of the day David and Karen had inputted the data from all 1500 phone calls so the campaign ground troops could get those Nevada voters to vote early. Robert and Peter set up the tables and chairs, and talked through issues that came up for the callers.

We had a few new callers and the Pedro high kids showed up en masse again this Saturday.

We sure would like some more help and if we get enough, we will expand the phone banking to another site or add another 3-hour shift.

Had Enough? Don't watch just watch the polls. Take action. Join neighbors in recruiting workers and votes for the Obama campaign.
Bring your commitment, your cell phone and your energy. Let's make history.

For the past month and through election day, I will be working on the Obama Campaign. I am leading a fine group of volunteers in the Harbor Area.
California is a sure win for Obama, so we are trying to turn battleground states blue. Recently, the campaign asked us to focus on calling voters in Nevada and North Carolina.

We need to build this campaign and recruit more volunteers and votes.
How do we do it? We talk to friends, asking them to give a few hours a week, and on the weekends we are calling voter lists in battleground state. Those lists, supplied by the campaign,
are filled with potential voters in many of the battleground states. We are identifying Obama supporters so field workers in those states can visit them, then turn them out
on election day and for early voting. We are also talking to undecideds and even changing the minds of people leaning McSame.

I can tell you that many people with whom I have spoken, Democrats and Republicans alike are concerned about McSame's judgment,
especially so after the pick of Sarah Palin. Many people are wondering whether a tempermental, high-stakes gambler, who sees himself as always in the right, is the person
for president. He gambled on Palin, he played chicken with the bail out talks, and he played drama queen about showing up at the debate.

I don't know about you, but I have enough drama in my life without worrying for another 8 years about what the next crack-pot idea or Constitutional infringement
is going to come out of the West Wing of the VP's office.

Sarah Palin is coming to Carson this Saturday. Two days after the Vice Presidential Debate, she wants to show the world that she can come to one of the bluest areas in the bluest state in the Union and have over 10,000 people show up for a rally for her. This is outrageous!!!

We need to tell the world that California does not want another Bush term!!! Therefore, we are inviting ALL GRASSROOTS DEMOCRATS and all people who want change in this country to come out to a rally outside her rally this Saturday. National media will be covering the rally and this gives us a golden opportunity to share out story.

I am attaching a flyer to this email that I would love for you to forward to your contacts. The more people we have - the better!!! We are also encouraging everyone to make several signs and to bring them with you as part of our rally.

Reminder: Camp Obama in SoCal

I attended Camp Obama last month in Los Angeles and cannot begin to explain the impact it has had on my life and my role in this campaign. I encourage all of you that can make the time to attend!

Please keep in mind that is is intensive and extensive. It will be a full 2 days of important information and workshop style learning but again, I cannot reccomend it more.
