David Plouffe, Campaign Manager
Obama for America
Chicago, Illinois
Dear David.
After setting up my committee, "San Fernando Valley for Obama," I have worked assiduously to find the materials I need to get started. My group needs T-shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, and whatever else you may have. We are going to begin selling these at art fairs, farmers' markets, and other small venues. Gradually, we will work up to a "Farm Aid"-type concert and finish with a big telethon on KCAL-TV, Channel 9 here in Los Angeles.
The problem is: I cannot find ANY organization that is working for Obama's election here in Los Angeles . . . and believe me, I have searched everywhere. "Los Angeles for Obama" seems to be a black hole. Furthermore, I have called Obama offices in Washington (202)224-2854, in Springfield (217)492-5089), and in Chicago (866-675-2008 and 312/886-3506). I have searched everywhere on the Internet. No one I’ve contacted knows anything about the Los Angeles organization for Obama.
I went to the February L.A. rally and worked at the Obama Store. That was fun. But the turnout seemed poor. You would think there would be 100,000 screaming fans there in the nation’s second largest city. But, I looked to me that about 2,000 people turned out . . . one of the lowest turnouts in the nation.
Since I can't find any semblance of an Obama organization here in L.A., and since we cannot find anyone with credibility at the national level, we are going ahead and ordering our own T-shirts, buttons, and bumper stickers. We will handle our own finances. We would much rather work with your campaign, but we can’t find anyone here in L.A., or anywhere, with the authority to help . . . and, time is a-wastin'.
In my never-too-humble opinion, Barack Obama will be our greatest president since John F. Kennedy. We MUST work to get him elected. I'll do my part. Now, the people of Los Angeles, and particularly the San Fernando Valley, must do their part. Enthusiasm is high, but there is no organization to focus the zeal. Our group will provide the necessary focus.
May the force be with Barack as he leads this nation back to a republic and a constitutional democracy.
Cordially,
Rich Kapnick, Chair,

P.S. The money I donated by credit card about five weeks ago has yet to show up on my personal thermometer, despite the claim that the thermometers are "updated every five minutes." What gives?
