Sarah-Ann Shaw introduces the first panel. Sarah Compton, Marshall Ganz, Juan Leyton, Ethan Winn and Alan Khazei talked about harnessing the Obama Grassroots Movement.
Sarah Compton: What was most special was the inspiring candidate we had. Also, people were empowered and everyone felt that what they were doing was crucial to getting Barack elected. The other thing that is special is that we are still here and want to do everything we can to support the President in his office. Lessons learned: MA is a different animal -- we're blue. People thought we didn't need resources, but we were able to help in many places, in addition to the usual help in NH. We didn't wait for direction. We got organized and empowered people. We reached more voters across the country because we were so well organized. (Applause)

Last Weekend at the OFA-MA Grassroots Organizing Forum the second panel was about Grassroots Advocacy Can Impact Public Policy. The panel included Matthew O'Malley, Timothy Foley, Najma Nazy'at and Colin Moore
Question: Gay marriage was seen as an impossible dream, now it is happening. What role did grassroots play in this success?
Matthew O'Malley: Seven plaintiff couples sued the Commonwealth, seeking a marriage license. The court ruled in favor of the couples, to the surprise of some. It was done through the judicial process. The Constitutional Convention had a vote to put forth a Civil Unions bill to negate marriage equality. Through grassroots organizing, we got 151 representatives to kill the bill and ensure marriage equality in the state. It was a broad based movement of people all across the state -- including new people that weren't involved in politics. It was a civil rights issue, not just an LGBT issue. We are still knocking on doors, and still advocating for this issue in NH.

Our local newspaper's the front page is about the Presidential election. The reporters ask "the voices of Main Street" who they will vote for, or if they are undecided, they ask why. Technically, Plymouth is the borderland between the old Yankee Cape Cod and the more working class South Shore. This paper is on the South Shore side, still people down here tend to be pretty even handed. Obviously like the majority of Mass most are Obama supporters, but there are plenty McCain supporters. Anyway, here is what one man said and it really suprised me someone from here spoke this way:
"We're tracking a guy named Osama Bin Laden and I'm voting for a guy named Barack Obama? What are you, out of your mind? I don't trust him. I don't trust where he is from, I don't know who put him there."
I mean I know we have talk radio stoking this sentiment, but it was surprising. I can deal with diagreement like "I don't agree with his tax policy" or "I think he may not finish the job in Iraq" or some other issue related reason for why one does not prefer Obama. But I am so tired of this "be afraid of Obama" nonsense. Thank goodness this quote was also included:
"Things are changing, especially with my generation. Race isn't necessarily as much of an issue as it would be with, say, my parents' generation or my grandparents' generation. We've grown up so engulfed in the differences, so it doesn't necessarily jump out as much to us."
Wow, a sit com length commercial from Obama, to be aired almost right before election. I have to say I am pretty excited about this one, almost like waiting for the fist epiosde of a new show (hopefully this metaphor is a sign of things to come, keep your fingers crossed guys)

In my local paper someone sent in an editorial condeming a negative cartoon about Palin in the editorial section and called the newspaper unfairly biased to Obama. They also praised McCain for his military service and denounced Obama for his lack of military service. Here is my editorial response:
To the Editor:
I response to Hawksley of Foxboro's editorial on Oct. 9th.
First let me say in defense of The Sun Chronicle, who may or may not be in the Obama camp. The job of a newspaper is to report the news as it comes, and to let the local people express their views. I believe the cartoon your speaking of was in the editorial section which directly represents the opinions of the people. They did publish you letter. Keeping that in mind you would have to agree that the lack of pro-McCain ramblings in the Sun Chronicle would be due to the peoples lack of support for the Republican Ticket.
Secondly as far as the attacks against Palin, which are pale in comparison to the fraudulent attacks on Obama. Her speeches lack substance and resemble pep rallies not presidential addresses, and that is causing the attacks. Yes she has been a good Governor of Alaska, but she has not been extraordinary. Not to discredit Palin's experience but Alaska has about the same population as the City of Boston. Would you be just as supportive for Mayor Menino as VP?
Now I do respect McCain for his honorable service to our country, but it is not an entitlement to the presidency. My disgust lies with the lack of respect for Obama's humble beginnings, and the view of him as an elitist. He was son to a poor single mother on food stamps, and somehow graduated from Harvard. Instead of choosing a high paying job on Wall Street he choose to serve his community. You said Obama has not fought for his country, I disagree. He has most certainly fought for his country by fighting for its people and their livelihood. America would be nothing without its work force. Who do you think supports the troops overseas? Is this not honorable? Obama's personal story is proof that the American Dream is still alive and it displays the possibilities available to all American citizens.
You are right Palin does deserve respect and so does Obama. A man who rose from nothing and is spending his life giving back.

Just looking at the debate, I really can't say who I feel performed better. It's all pretty standard from both sides, no earth shattering new policies revealed and no major bloopers besides both sides stretching the facts a little, but that's to be expected in all political debates. What do you guys think?

What is Patriotism? What does it mean to be Patriotic? I love this country and I would like to consider myself a Patriot, but I have one problem, I'm a Democrat. I am very confused by this notion that only Republicans can be Patriots. Is it true that Republicans are the only ones to put "Country First". If so what are Democrats putting first?
Maybe Democrats are putting "Economy First" by sponsoring government regulation on big corporations to keep them from taking advantage of Americans. Deregulation has lead to the biggest housing crises our country has seen since the great depression.
Actually Democrats are probably putting "Security First" because they disagreed with the Iraq War and wanted to spend all of our efforts going after Al-Qaida and Osama Bin Laden. Spending everything in Iraq, and neglecting the War in Afghanistan, allowed Al-Qaida to grow in strength.
No I know what it is, Democrats are putting "People First" by sponsoring government aid to actual struggling Americans rather than big corporations. Democrats will raise taxes on those who can afford it and lower taxes on those who need it. if you make $40,000 a year could you use an extra $1000? An if you make $3,000,000 a year could you afford to pay $700,000 in taxes to help your fellow Americans?
Patriotism is supporting your fellow Americans who are having trouble. Patriotism is defending your fellow Americans from invading enemies. Patriotism is protecting your fellow Americans from greedy corporations. I believe Patriotism is a love for your country and a passion for it to be the best it can be.
On November 4th, 2008 I am going to prove my Patriotism and I will be putting my "Country First" by voting for a Democrat named Barack Obama.

My aunt and I are trying to organize voters in our neighborhood in Plymouth MA. We live in a very underserved area. We have A LOT of either unregistered or newly registered voters in my neighborhood. We are helping them fill out registration forms before the state deadline.
Still there are many potential voters who have no transportation to get to the polls. I've been an active voter since I turned 18 and I have always answered the call to help others exercise their right to vote. Every election I offer to drive other voters to the polls, but I am only one person and one car (filled with many carseats =))! Anyone in the Plymouth area who votes at Cold Spring could be a great help with this!
Also if anyone has contact info on the Obama Headquarters located downtown Plymouth please post their contact info as a reply to this message. I'm hoping they could help with getting our registered voters to the polls.
I was wondering if anyone has the contact information for the Obama Campaign headquarters in Plymouth MA. It is located on Park Ave facing the waterfront (near Al's restaurant, across from Citizen's bank). Have you seen it. I saw it driving doing errands. Well I couldn't stop in this week, but I'd love to reach someone there.
If you work there or know anything about the site, would you post the contact information (phone, email) and any info (if they do voter registration). There are a lot of people in my neighborhood who are still not registered.
I am disappointed that BO and the other leaders I wrote to supported the bailout. Looks like GWB found weapons of mass destruction again- in our own economy - and Congress, yet again, was suckered into giving more power to the Executive branch instead of taking responsibility to act on the grave problem themselves. I guess they can always hold hearings in the future, for whatever good that does.
The bailout doesn't make any sense - as the stock market indicated today - and the world seems to agree.
When I ran two small companies, I knew I would be a major sign of financial trouble if I had to borrow money to make payroll. How many times can they borrow to make payroll? Someone isn't minding the books. A business owner can be imprisoned for failing to make payroll. Borrowing for raw goods to manufacture product to fill orders would be okay, but when it gets to not being able to afford payroll, there's a serious management problem and that company should fail, leaving others to seize the opportunities to expand.
I think BO needs to answer this question: You realized that "weapons of mass destruction"was based on faulty info, why didn't you think that the "funding of mass destruction" was also based on faulty assumptions? And, why would ANYONE trust George W. Bush or his Executive Branch to handle another crisis after the destructive tactics they've used against the justice system, national security, the outing of an intelligence officer, the firings of federal judges, secret meetings with the oil industry to create energy policy, policies that protected ENRON,...?
I still support BO, but my confidence in that vote is taking a beating. I hope BO remembers the ground up organizing he has so successfully promoted - and truly does work to make the CHANGE we are all craving.
Come on, seriously, she expects people to believe Obama is related to terrorism at the age of EIGHT? Guess Palin got no other options besides spreading obvious lies about Obama as a last desperate attempt to drag him down.

See full coverage on Obama’s bipartisan message at http://kronomy.com/event/XCeB4NcMrq/, including pictures, videos and text. “A new survey conducted by Quinnipiac University over the weekend shows Obama leading McCain in Florida 51 percent to 43 percent, in Ohio 50 percent to 42 percent and in Pennsylvania 54 percent to 39 percent. Since 1960, no president has been elected without winning two of those three states.” Things are looking good for Obama!
Again, good message, nice gesture at this turbulent time from both sides. Just wish it didn’t take a financial meltdown to bring this spirit of cooperation around. Drop me a line at my blog, thanks.

So Obama responded to the rejection of the bailout plan. I like that he is encouraging people to stay hopeful, and I like that he is encouraging the Congress to actually do their job. But, I am curious about how active a role he is taking in coming up with the next bill. Beyond calling for more regulations, I would like to see him offer some more concrete details of what he thinks THE bill should include.
