I don't think he would be on the scene if this administration would stop trying to nail the last administation to the cross for war crimes. We are supposed to be going forward (CHANGE), not living in the past.

First of all, the GOP has been very, very neagtive since day one, way before anything about the war crimes came out. I would have to agree with you, but after the disastrous last 8 years, Cheney should be ashamed of their record and quietly ride off into the sunset. He is a major factor in all the negativity against the new administration, as if his era was such a huge success.

By the way, you're 100% correct. We are supposed to be going forward (CHANGE). That's what the Obama administration is trying to do. That's what the MAJORITY voted for ... OBAMA and CHANGE. Unfortunately, if you look at the GOP voting record, they're doing EVERYTHING in their power to derail any advances toward real change. If the "party of no" continues their arrogance, we will remain stagnant and we will ALL continue to suffer because of their arrogance and obstinacies.

I'm ashamed to admit I was a lifelong Republican. What the hell was I thinking????

We understand that the reason the coward fascist Israeli occupying army retreated from GAZA in 2005 was due to the strong blows they kept receiving from of the brave Palestinian Resistance. Not for their love of freedom for the Palestinians in GAZA. GAZA knows what freed her before and how to stay free and defeat the coward occupiers. History tells us that freedom fighters are always victorious. We demand that all Palestinians and freedom fighters throughout the world would unite and focus to stop the barbaric attack of the fascist Zionist occupiers on the besieged Palestinian women and children in GAZA. Stop the illegal bombardment of the schools, colleges, buildings full of sleeping civilians and hospitals using the American made planes. Israel has turned off the electricity in GAZA. Over thirty years ago, a book came out titled "How the Government Breaks the Law, by Jethro K. Lieberman." Even then it was old news and the examples cited seemed small compared to today's chronic law-breakers in the White House and at many federal departments and agencies. Many recent books have been written on the expansive outlaw behavior of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

The Executive has devoted less attention to the explosion of unauthorized actions in recent years. What should be the most frequent question by reporters to government officials -- namely, “By what authority are you acting?” – is the rarest of inquiries.

A two part series on Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. in the Washington Post by David
Cho in late November brought this point out in a stunningly frank admission by the corporate bailout czar himself.

Speaking of the takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as other mega seizures of failing Wall Street firms, Mr. Paulson expressed these anarchic words: "Even if you don't have the authorities – and frankly I didn't have the authorities for anything – if you take charge, people will follow."

Whew! There you have it! He becomes the law and the law is what he says it is because no one – neither a rubber-stamping President, nor a supine Congress, nor any citizen, deprived of any standing to sue, is going or can do anything about it.

Reporter Cho goes on to write: "Senior government officials said Paulson helped craft rescue programs for financial firms, though he was not sure he had an unquestionable legal basis for the initiatives including the bailouts of the failing investment bank Bear Stearns in March and the
wounded insurance giant American International Group (AIG) in September."

Mr. Paulson went further. Playing Congress, he backed the Federal Reserve – already a government within a government funded by banks– to unprecedented unilateral expansion of its powers and its self-made assets. The Post reported that officials from the Treasury and the Fed “never knew whether they had the legal authority to interfere with the market for such derivatives but did so anyway because the opaque trading threatened the wider financial system."

Unauthorized Executive Branch actions tend to be contagious. Noticing that the crisis left Wall
Street on its knees and willing to unilaterally assume over $8 trillion in a variety of loan, subsidy and capital obligations, the Bush regime kept making more of its powers all by itself. Why not, they may have been thinking? Look what they've gotten away with in the areas of military and
foreign policy actions.

Weekend gigantic corporate bailouts – a more recent one being the $300 billion plus assumption of Citigroup's financial risks – engineered by Citigroup co-boss, Robert Rubin--were very secret affairs.

The more public grab of power was the $700 billion goliath to rescue the casino capitalists on Wall Street which was submitted in only 3 ½ pages of proposed legislation to Congress by Paulson and Ben Bernake, the Fed's chairman in September.

This was too much for the ideologies of House Republicans who beat it on the first round. Even the spineless Democrats thought the requested authority was too much of a blank check. So what happened? Bush told Paulson to give various members of Congress "sweeteners" such as pork
and tax breaks for favored lobbyists to get the required votes. Consequently, Paulson was granted staggering discretion to spend the $700 billion when, where and to whom he wanted under whatever conditions or no conditions at all. All in the name of socialism saving capitalism from massive collapse. Ironic.

Mr. Paulson came away from Capitol Hill with Congress in his hip pocket – not exactly what the framers of our Constitution had in mind in 1787.

Thus embolden, Paulson initiated a unilateral, administrative repeal of a Congressional enactment in the tax code – section 382 – to give the banks a huge windfall of about $140 billion. George K. Yin, former chief of staff of the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation,
rejected the legality of the Treasury Department's decision. He told the Post: "I think almost
every tax expert would agree that the answer is no. They basically repealed a 22-year-old law
that Congress passed [and Reagan signed] as a backdoor way of providing aid to banks."

Section 382 of the Tax code “sharply restricts a company from using the tax losses of a company
it acquires to reduce its own tax liability," according to the respected Citizens for Tax Justice.
The Treasury's two-page notice generated a brief specialized display of outrage from members of
the Tax writing committees in Congress and a hundred national, state and local organizations
signed a joint letter to Congress demanding the legislators reverse the Treasury’ unauthorized
edict.

So what did the House of Representatives do? It passed, later rejected by the Senate a provision
in the auto bailout bill, a provision that would have extended the unauthorized Treasury ruling
to the automobile industry!

What is going on here is a revolutionary coup d-etat of our legal system by executive branch
diktats.

Is the organized legal profession through their bar associations in challenge mode? Are law
professors churning over this mockery of the legislature and executive branch administrative
law? Are conservative groups – always upset about judicial activism – going into high gear
against the new monarchy in and around the White House in downtown Washington, D.C.? Are
all those futurists worried enough about the trillions of debt dollars being piled on our children
and grandchildren to protest and act? Not really.

Obviously, all this is a developing story. Stay tuned, unless you are willing to be turned out.

President Bush acts abroad and American's image among foreign nations.

President Bush was welcomed with the tossed shoes in Baghdad. That was the traditional way of welcoming war criminals. Every Iraqi family has lost at least a loved one or two of their family members since democracy-loving Bush lied about the WMD to invade their country in 2003. Bush not only destroyed the Iraqi infrastructure but also destroyed several towns with all of its inhabitants. Including men, women, old, young, and children. More than a million Iraqi civilians perished since the illegal invasion of that Muslim country. Bush was belittled in his worldly life and will find the punishment he deserves awaiting him when he stands in front on Allah in the Judgment Day where everybody will be looking after himself in that serious fearful day. As described in the following four verses of Surah “Al Naba”, The Great News (chapter 78) of the Holy Qur’an:

[37] (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatsoever is in between them, the Most Gracious, with Whom they shall have no power, to speak or argue with (on the Day of Resurrection except by His Leave).

Americans know John McCain's wicked mentality. Instead of paying poor Joe the plumber his fair wages to fix all the leaks he has. McCain made him the party speaker on the podium to get away with paying him anything for his work. McCain is convinced that Joe the plumber can speak to the nation better than he does. It is clearly evidenced by his choice of his Vice President Palin, that his knowledge, judgment, and ability to be the President of the U.S. is definitely less than that of the plumber.

Political Equivalence

I wish to declare the principle of political equivalence as grounds for the moral authority to govern through shared benefits and sacrifices between these in Washington, D.C. who rule and the citizens who are ruled.

Two simple, short bills in Congress will illustrate this major way to improve the quality of public deliberation, enhance the well-being of the populace and provide equity, now sorely lacking as the gap between Congress, the White House and the people widens recklessly.

The first legislation would state that anytime the Congress and the White House plunge our country, either constitutionally or unconstitutionally, into a war or significant armed conflict beyond our borders, all age-qualified and able-bodied children and grandchildren of all members of Congress and the President and Vice President will be conscripted immediately into the armed forces.

President George W. Bush, who took our country into an illegal, continuing war of aggression against Iraq in 2003 on a platform of lies, deceptions and cover-ups, has caused the loss of 4,200 American lives, 100,000 injuries and over one million civilian Iraqi lives.

At $14 million per hour, plus the long term expenses, this war will cost taxpayers three trillion dollars according to Nobel Laureate economist, Joseph Stieglitz. Imagine how many public facilities throughout America such a sum could repair, expand and modernize. Imagine the well-paying jobs in every community.

Mr. Bush has stated often that the Iraq war and occupation has been “worth the sacrifice.” By whom? Certainly not the Bush and Cheney families. Their children, starting with Jenna and Barbara, are enjoying their comfortable lives far from the horrors inflicted on that distant country and its people.

The clear anticipation that the politician’s offspring be at risk or, at the least, be very inconvenienced by commencing their military career, would induce much more careful public deliberations on Capitol Hill and in the White House.

As long as the political rulers, with the savoring corporate profiteers by their side, can send other young Americans to die and kill – mostly poor whites, African Americans and Latinos—they will be more susceptible to be swept by emotions of giving over their constitutional responsibilities to presidential warmongers who bully and stampede them toward funding violent follies.

Equivalence would provide members of Congress with incentives to avoid the triad of being gutless, spineless, and deliberately clueless so as to acquire deniability.

The second bill would stipulate that no member of Congress, and no President, Vice President or Cabinet member would have any health insurance, pension or other benefits until all Americans are provided these long overdue essential benefits of a giant, modern economy.

With such equivalence, members of Congress would not be so cavalier about indexing their salaries to inflation but denying such to the federal minimum wage now wallowing at $6.55 per hour. Inflation-adjusted since 1968, when labor productivity was half of what it is today, the minimum wage would now be $10 per hour. Even at that level, it would still be far less than the $100 per hour, including benefits that Senators and Representatives now receive.

In the nineteen thirties, John Maynard Keynes thought it would not be long before high-productivity economies would solve what he called “the economic problem.”

After World War II, Western European peoples, rising from the ruins of that conflagration, secured for themselves universal health insurance, decent wages, decent pensions, four-week paid vacation, paid maternity and family sick leave. Most of these nations abolished the chronic poverty such as that which exists and is growing in our country.

Who will introduce these two legislative bills? Congressman Dennis Kucinich? Senator Russ Feingold? Will readers of this column communicate with their members of Congress about the wondrous effects of political equivalence on a much needed sense of community between the rulers and the ruled?
