Oi,
A todas as crianças,
Luiz Carlos Caminha de Andrade.
Ps: Por favor, lembre-se de acrescentar um pouco mais de sal no tempero e sabor à comida.
When I was born in April 1978, the world was also a baby in comparison to what it is today. It is true, men had already reached moon and Brazilians were three times soccer world champpions;58,62 and 1970.
The episodes I like to remember the most, start with memories of the times Brazilian National Soccer Team or I were in American soil. When Mr. Zagallo and captain at the time, Dunga, raized the FIFA Thopheum first time in 1994, I was in Recife , jumping, yelling and burning some fireworks, feeling a real positive vibration, I cried!
In 2002 , I not only cried but I got crazy followed by my family , some friends and curious people on the streets of Chicago, along Michigan avenue and in front of the art museum, waving to some tourists(most of them Asian),talking to some English residents and explaining Chicago’s Police it was just our funny way to express our art, then thank them all for observing and registering that important moment. As any American Brazilian or Brazilian American in Chicago, we celebrated with barbecue, in a park by Lake Michigan shore. Unbelievable ! That is why I believe things are suppose to change and become better, I have seen the unbelievable and, I swear, it was through a modest 19” tv screen,at coke early in the morning, then at China´s house, one of my friends in Illinois. The craziness was about being “penta” something our Youth, our Parents and Grand’s worked and prayed for ,in Brazil and outside it during the referred period of time. Next day, when I opened my eyes I was on 290 bus westbound to Coca Cola Lakeview plant in Niles-IL,I was sure I needed to place something on my work vehicle to remind me of that victory as a being, so I taped the, Green, Yellow, White and Blue Flag on my Sixbay with a fraze to thank Ronaldo(9) on my own. Latino coworkers stared, boss of the boss did not like... saying -- Brazil is Brazil America is America.I knew he was not right, but respected his position. I had really become a “penta campeão”, the thing is,... even with only part of the world recognizing its importance it has still been very nice.
What I see, being in Brazil today, goes beyond Soccer National Team achievements and good moment, it comes from people, from the way the whole country has followed a wide path of discoveries and modernization. We have been prepared to explore “Pre Sal” If we lay on it we deserve it up and running. Besides that , we are proud of “Flex Tech”, water and wind energy concepts and structures. If we can do to our roads, train, education and health system what we have done to our banks and shopping malls we will not have packed, unfair and dirty prisons(schools of crime) like the ones we do today anymore.
Our lifestyle fed by many different rhythms including, Samba,Rock and popular music, may have been seen as too risky by the International Monetary Fund and capitalists all over, still it is more like a show where the audience hand clap the artist in the end than a individual rollercoaster ride with a predictable end, and more; nature is in our favor, weather help us to save our precious time.
This “water divisor year of 2009” started with over two billion of people’s victory as Mr. Barack, Mrs Michelle and their family moved to the white house. At least 6% of that amount of people had already felt some similar change feelling few years ago when “da Silva” family left Garanhuns-PE to Brasília-DF. In Alvorada Palace Mr. Luís Inácio and Mrs. Marisa Letícia have made an admirable history by placing faith ,hope ,progress and thinking of order like no one had before in “ Cabrália”. I am sure that the “Mauriceia” leadership teachings have played important role in this Presidency’s success, with full and almost completed agenda. By September 7th, this year “Parque Dona Lindú" in Recife looked like it will be ready soon, once again, Petrobras has reasons to be proud of its people and the people have many to be proud of our company.
By now ,globe wise, American People and the International Community have built an eclectic concept inspired in global connectivity , the general religious and social family. Africa has been focused ,to help someone is better than to be looking for blame.New season is rising on the horizon, tourism depends on people, would you like some “Caipirinha”?
New methods of engineering could have been used long time in NE Brazil cities. I can tell, NEXTEL ,will keep playing its role as with new installations near by in Boa Viagem.
Luiz.
It is probably selfishness to say, but the more I remember about my past and live my present ,more I see the kind of blessed person I am.
I talked to two of my kids on the phone last night after a long time.It would have been a regular conversation had them not just arrived back to NY from Oita-Japan, after a two weeks trip to Asia. Leticia ,as usual, was the first one I said hello, she was happy and told me something I loved to hear from her,she said she likes Japan as much as she likes NY and as much she likes Brazil. I understood what she meant but it seemed NY is a country the way she said. We continued talking, later she acimilated; Brazil,USA and Japan are three great places and she likes them equaly.I like her spontaneouslyness,I am her father, thus, suspicious to say.–“Daddy I got a fish!”she said as she explained me how nice it was to fish along her coisins Lucas and Luana Chamusca,we continued talking, then I said what nice your first fish you fished in Japan. We talked about Tamandaré, a south shore Pernambucoan beach where I fished my first fish and said good bye so Daniel and I could talk. Big Daniel is funny somethimes, just like daddy,he repeated the same story his sister had just told me but added the fact that he wanted to fish more but mom did not let him.I did not say, but I thought, he deserves more,he continued saying he liked a six floor high, toy store, with nothing but fun inside. He is a young man today, mom is good for him I know.
It is morning now ,after a good night of sleep I reflete here in my room. This first time fishing subject with the kids reminded of first soccer game I went to, in a stadium,to watch NáuticoX São Paulo, with some friends, here in Recife.I was about ten,so were Vinicius,Bernardo e Bernardão.Since we were so young, Vinicius Ancle´s,Cláudio Cruz took us to “Aflitos”.
São Paulo has been one of the best teams ever in Brazil,at that time it was even better; Raí,Leonardo,Zetti,Juninho,Bernardão, all 94´s champions players getting prepared to the wolrd compettition.
Náutico was what it is today, a team with some tradition but no proeminence. At the end of the game we were all surprised Náutico beated São Paulo 2X1.
The best thing for the four of us happened latter when we got the chance to go to both locker´s room and got autographs from all players. From that day on, I became a Fan.
Twenty years have past since that nice experience, today I am not a Náutico´s fan anymore. With late bad campaigns and Sport´s Recife “Odissey” Championship last year ,my interest for the white and red colors was replaced with Black and red, in another words, No more Mr. Nice guy!
Sport´s new coach,my friend, Péricles Chamusca, Lucas and Luana´s Father, has on his hands an important opportunity to reset order and belief around. He may incorporate a fox and simbolize what our(Lion)people needs:change! Sport Recife and São Paulo will play next Sunday the 16th, I hope for another spectacle.
Luiz Andrade.
What a nice girl I saw yesterday... The shore was bounced a little, perhaps 6´ ,not bad in Porto de Galinhas.I had surfed earlier from noon to about 14:00,gone back to the ap.,and back to the beach around 16:00, to see my friend alex drop some good ones.I was there, looking at the sea when I turned my face a little to the right to the village direction and saw that nice girl. She probably got embarassed cause I did when I noticed her beautiful eyes, hair, mouth, face, and so on... she passed on and runned all my eyes could see,I really wished I could have held her hand and gone along, then she came back, I could see the other side of her. 100% beautiful.
I believe in first sight Love.
Certain groups of people believe in friendship, hand shakes and sincere words to listem to or to speak,I am in one of them.
In this letter I have no intention to criticise but, to offer my personal relate either in Brazil or outside it.After long years of study and observations,I can asure my participation with the moviment for change.
The end of XX century was extremely important, not only to me and my family when we moved to Chicago,it brought the most unexpected change . No UFO´s,no athomic energy or else,so what was it?I would say,in one way years of glory, in another growth,a hard task.
When I heard about September 11 2001 I had just arrived at Von Steuben High School,in Chicago, to do a Coke deliver and fill up the vending machines. I could tell something was unusual at distance. As I aproached company´s straight truck number 0007 some kids knoked on the side of it,but since they were so many and leaving at same time I also noticed those were not provocative knoks, they were exactly telling me something I just realized latter after Mr. Principal, whose name fails in my memory now, told me two planes had hitten Wolrd Trade Center towers. It is little unconfortable to say today that, until that moment I did not know what WTC was, besides the fact that I also misunderstood about the planes. I figured two presentation jets colliding into each other, when he told me that new ,then I saw on TV,so many times, in diferent angles ,a said page on America´s history and how much I needed to learn about Society and the English language. I called home,my answer machine was the only one available.
From my vivid memories,I know it is not easy to write or to speak about something that does not bring good memories. From the stories I heard after 1986,1990 and 1998 I understand Brazilians don´t like to remember Maracanã 1950 when Urugaian team whashed out a dream.Eight years latter Pelé showed the entire globe how important his feet are.
Mr Mario Jorge Lobo Zagalo, five times wolrd champion knows how important it was to land in Recife during the qualifying for 1994 Fifa´s wolrd Cup in USA.Our people hand claped him,Parreira, the team and their effort, then we got the chance to see, first hand,Romário showing our even more blessed flag from the pilot plane´s window and all of our penta Idols on top of a fire engine,on Boa Viagem avenue among a million of people. I was sixteen at the moment and personally touched some of our best guys feet.
In Portuguese&English “LANGENSCHEIDT”, which I call yellow submarine for foreign reseach, page 399, Portuguese section, the top word is “Audácia” which translations in English are: (S) Audaciousness,Audacity.
I sincerely expect I can volunteer and Participate to put my hands at work so my wolrd changes in a better way.
The more we are better we become stronger...
nowhere, now here.
I wellcome back Mr. Péricles Chamusca! New Sport Recife Coach, back from Japan
Dear Reader,
Pleased to write to you, I am Luiz, father of Maria Letícia,Daniel and Marina Andrade, son of Luiz Carlos Álvares de Andrade and Leda Maria Caminha de Andrade, coke guy, soccer player some times, who lived in Evanston and Chicago from October 1999 to December 2004.
I have a question for you today that I will try to answer myself; Why do people allow health sistem to get so bad if all of us will need it one day?
Just to mention, the most dificult reality legislators face everytime a new law is made is that it may never be too severe, for the simple reason that law may be used against who made it as well.It recalls me of that guy, perhaps a Senator, who wants to separate imigrants from “Native” americans and forgets he may be part of the second or third generation of an imigrant family. So who does he really want to kik out? Where does he want them to go? The answer for the first question may also be the answer for these two.Since the begining of the 20th century americans from all over have experienced some kind of fight against discrimination which, in the end, affects all.
Back to health sistem what we see today are the rich kids, pregnant women and elder citzens being treated in the best private hospitals while the poor ones wait in line for a bad care, meanwhile most of the midle class people pick the easiest choice, sometimes avoiding the lines, sometimes saving some bucks, when they really should be the ones with the best ideas. This cicle may have been ignored for years but does not hide the need for change.Imagine yourself a big castle representing the public health sistem and all these people around it, some with their own illness other with their loved relatives on pain. Now imagine this smaller castle built right in front of the one we just mentioned ,facing each other . In this small one no lines, better care and ,perhaps, more eficient workers. Don´t you think that more problems will arise from the big than solutions from the small? We are full of recent memories of castles to understand what happens when two or more cultures have to fight for survival. To keep leadership,it may not happen in America.
As I like in most of the letters I write,I want to mention Brazil. The health problem here is way bigger in size than many and intensity than most countries,so do not get surprised if you start to see great world solutions comming from local ideas.
During the years I lived in Illinois,I also worked for some pizza restaurants as deliver guy.The words I liked to hear the most while driving my 1996 Green Swift I would like to turn back to those who understand the importancy of them; keep the change!
Here are some names of people I met in US I would like to mention just for the record; Mr. Steve Ragussi and Carmelo from Captain´ nemo at the corner of clark st. and Rogers ,in Chicago.Mr John O´malley from Napa auto in Evanston,Mr Steve Frederico,Off road racer, tough guy(the best). Mr. Joe Precorado from CCE,John Walsh,Steve Walsh,Nicole Nielsen,John Scalzo,Roberto Gonzales,Victor Hembree,Jason O´conell,Hugo Jimenez,Peter Kitowski(a father I had in Chicago),Joe Heeney all from CCE I remember that frase “ No escuses, Results!” it is true.A big thanks to my soccer coach Theodore Bokios and the entire “Raptors” USA Team.
“Não há nada como um sonho para criar o Futuro.”Victor Hugo.“A vida é uma sucessão de Oportunidades.”Gabriel Garcia Márques.“Ou encontraremos uma forma ou a inventaremos.” Hannibal. “Faça aquilo que você mais teme.” Ralph Waldo Emerso.
Father is a word I have said for thirty one years in my life,I hear that, diferent ways often as well.It is a pleasure to me to be son and father as it is to have children and parents like the ones I have.
WhileG8 encounter to trace world´s axle and America discuss Abortion I would like to salute the Members and witness about the subject I am closer to. \when I Realized I was going to be father in October 1997 I was not even twenty years old yet,but diferent than most young parents in Recife-Brazil at the time,I loved the Idea and participated with most of the preparation including "pre natal" visits to the doctor, shopping clothies,forniture,etc... so the new baby could begin life with some confort and the new beautiful mom could enjoy pregnacy on its good.
Since baby´s gender was not known yet, most of these stuff where bought green, color that represents hope for many and simbolizes the Amazon on National brazilian Flag.By the fourth month, just by the most beautiful moment of a pregnant woman, a modern ultrason showed a girl was on the way,but along with that good new came doctor´s confusing declaration:-"Leticia has two tumors in her brain and huge are the chances she will be deficient." I was a Literature student at the time.Back from school I felt something was not right as I saw Leticia´s mother and her Parents sitting on clinic´s main entrance steps and crying.I aways admired their union and their simplicity and the way I express that has been by making jokes, laughing or simply doing what they do,but at that moment I knew I could not cry, instead I had to show my support and faith was the way I instantly found to keep my strength.I recal the thought I kept in my mind for the months ahead -God,I know my baby is perfect, help me to be strong, please.
The months that followed that visit todoctor´s room were perhaps the most dificult I had in life.I saw on my Parents face a doubt as if they asked me what I had done wrong to deserve that bad time.My answer was my silence, deep inside,I could feel I would be a happy father son.One day during this mass,I heard about abortion, but sufering had ripened me quickly and that was the day I took the first good and important decision in twenty years of life.At least one good thing happened while we fought against desperation; our families got closer,The Caminha de Andrade and The Jalfim Alvim had now a reason to believe their power.
A promess was made byLeticia´s grand mother Zenaide, to "nossa senhora da conceição" she used to take relatives and friends every 8th day of each month to "morro da conceição",a mountain where a Lady´s image standson.Particulary I found that too much but remember the day I went there and saw sufering spreaded of people´s faces`and many candles by the Saint´s Image.
Something I knew was in my favor was my age, twenty years and being only twenty days older than Daniella,Leticia´s Mother,I knew the chances that kid had to be perfect(normal) were great, besides that, both took good care of our lives ,no drugs, aways exercising in our jobs as models, riding bikes or simply jogging on the beach.
Mr. Antônio Jalfim,Zenaide´s brother and his wife Fatima Jalfim, both living ripenessly, came up with an Idea I have admired for years, they suggested a second opinion, which might had seemed a simple one if were not for the fact that they also introduced Dr. de Avila,Family´s doctor whose explanations about the empty spaces in baby´s brain conforted our souls. He told us,those spaces would probably naturaly filled with brain mass by the 7th or 8th month when "the quick growth" happens in every pregnancy.
The birthday was unforgetable, together,we all held hands, prayed and hugged each other. All we could do was to wait. For God´s grace, our faith and the desire of our relatives and friends,Dr. de Avila was right. On June 8th 1998 a wonderful girl,Maria Leticia Alvim de Andrade was born, perfect! Dady´s princess!
Today Leticia is eleven years old,she lives in New York with her Brother Daniel Alvim de Andrade ,their mother and step Father. She goes to school, speaks English and Portuguese fluently, plays soccer and violoncello, she is a sweety pie.
To My Parents, my Kids,...
With love,
:p
Dear president of The United States of America,
as you have said , change has come to America!
I can think of many things to say to make youfeel better, instead , I believe I should do It better.Instantly a question comes to my mind, how? That is probably world's question as the ship goes on.
The roads I once saw slowly being built, are ready today . Cars can travel on them at one hundred miles ,but he train that leads to SUAPE is still stopped. Let's talk about Brazil when it is time to, latter on. By doing what is good first to the good is infinite times better than to try the impossible way of placing good on bad without a strong reference. Anyway I wait for the first class day before I can do anything to drop São Paulo and Rio´s violence waves. No wonder, Hawaiian tubes and cutbacks will come after, we'll see it.
I answered a survey with questions about what government priority might be,last month. I really don't think war is it, that is already on, we tried to prevent it. Jobs can be created by the fusion of experienced and young people, as many times as needed in America. Money spending is as important as making money, but what I really think(and see on other people's faces)that is good for US now, is to prove friends they can count on Us. I am not talking about UK, Australia, India, France or many others outside America and in better shape.I am talking about Mexico. Either the proximity or the damage once caused need to be considered and new policies need to be made. Please allow me to tell you to invite our close friends to the party Sir.
This is a very special moment in my life ,I am happy, healthy ,exited and the reason is I stepped on American soil outside Continental Brazil again, well,at least on a deck. It makes me feel like once before,It makes me think of new horizons, beautiful ones.On board of CGG VERITAS VANTAGE for the first time as an Environmental Technician is much more encouraging than it was at Big John , as a translator, for a month, one year and half ago. I went back tthere and spent a night on board yesterday. It made me think of the beginning of a new time. It has been five days since I arrived here. What calls my attention today,is bigger than what I realized in 2007. Living with about forty eight people I really don't know, requires discipline and respect, specially when we talk about different regions on the globe. Philippines can make good food, they like U2 and seem very friendly. Brazilians show on sea what should be shown on the continent and make noise wherever we can be. Americans , the ones from north of the hemisphere, are masters in command with computers, air guns, microphones, cranes ,FRCs and of course, intelligence. On the bridge, Norwegians work like I think Argentineans will, the day Petrobrás and other companies achieve to send a Brazilian seismic ship on sea. Both with knowledge and competence and much to understand and learn from the big and the free. As a group we all learn, day by day, that teamwork is the key.
I wonder how this first month has been in the offices trough out the country ,though I am more concerned about how workers can get jobs and their jobs back and that comes to a positive answer, foreign exchange. The exchange of intelligence and work between nations, a long process that can take long and bother some, but will bring results and integrate many as well. As the need for technology increases we start the withdraw from Iraq.
This new journey makes me feel proud as I enjoy good accommodations and a nice work environment here at vantage. PAMA 08 is something I dreamed to be on somehow, not long ago. Once again I might understand how you feel and it feels good by the way.
There is one word that I heard a lot while living in US and many times while on board and that is "wait!". I learned it therefore. I rather bet on your mandate than to freak out about it, but please take it like a peace of a Brazilian "cake" called "Rapadura" and know that it is sweet but hard at the same time. Lula, our interesting leader had just said that as well.
My Younger daughter ,Marina, will be twenty months old as of as February twelveth, tomorrow. Daniel and Maria Leticia returned to Recife after eight and five years living abroad. I feel blessed. We had the chance to surf together, have lunch together, talk about things like Leticia´s first ride on a bike without spare wheels in Chicago and sleep together ,something we had not done for a long time . Now they are back to New York. I wonder how they behave like after visiting Brazil. I wonder if they ever dressed the shirts I desired and ordered. I wonder about their future even more today so please pay attention, I am in this world to educate them as much as you were educated by your father and no crisis in this world can change that. Perhaps they look just like you and represent their names where they go. Oh! you were so beautiful together on January twentyth.
I would like to take this chance to offer you a chorus in Portuguese and say good bye afterwards;
"Podem lever meu nome, podem levar as canções que eu fiz mas ninguém vai lever de mim a chance de acreditar que o bom da vida é a gente ser feliz. Podem levar meu nome , podem levar as canções que eu fiz, mas ninguém vai levar de mim a chance de recomeçar e ensinar ao mundo a ser aprendiz."(DVD luau Jamil Costa do Sauípe -BA,track 01)
God bless America!
I hope to see you soon in Recife,
Good bye,
02/11/2009
Dear Charlie Anderson,
I really wish I could go to Indiana and show my support to to Brarack in person, although the address I put in my donation form is not the one I am living right now. I am in Brazil and will not be able to attend the meeting. I would like to tell the lucky ones present there that they will not regret voting in a honest man, no matter if that is the election for the landlord in their apartment buildings or to elect the man for the white house. After I turn my computer off I am going to visit the American embassy ,here in Recife-PE-Brazil, to do my voting registration, just to make sure I will be part of this changing moment in history. I have seen many Americans here in this beautiful Brazilian city. Just yesterday I participated in a job interview for an English school and there was another American teacher there from South Carolina what shows we can count on this great country´s support in our new challenge of spreading around the world. Prepare you luggage make your plans and contact a local. This way we Americans will release a lot of the weight we are carrying on our shoulders.
Wish you and the entire Barack "Family" the best.
my regards,
What motivates the modern voter? Is it personality? The Issues? The proverbial pocketbook? Ever since Nixon was outed as a scoundrel in the 70s, America's sponsored media have pushed hard on identifying the problems with America as not being the result of a system in decay but rather the result of aberrant personality types and have refocused public attention to individuals rather than on the systemic source of the problems themselves. One look at the preoccupation of the public with celebrities gives you an idea of how far this obsession's been carried to consensus. Reviling Bush and Cheney only serves to divert attention from the systemic process these men only lead and refocus attention onto a cavalcade of personalities we call elections.
But not all people respond to this kind of distraction. What then does motivate the modern voter?
In my experience, there are 4 types of voters out there: About 30% of the public responds to what is commonly called "charismatic authority." This is when people respond to personality types regardless of what their position is.
Another 30% responds to what might be called "administrative authority." These are people that respond to the bureaucratic authority of the society's rule keepers, people likely to want law and order.
A third group of another 30% constitutes "the authority of self-interest." You know the type; the ones who ask "What's in it for me?" This group is exemplified by salespeople and their penchant for a 10% cut for anything to happen.
The 10% balance are those of us who believe that we are motivated by logic and reason, a small number compared to the 3 great motivators at work. Whether this is true or we all simply fooling ourselves remains to be seen.
Now, a good leader has to learn how to manage all 4 constituencies to effectively run any kind of organization. But a politician only needs a simple majority to win. In this way, it is easy to see how Ronald Reagan can gather in the charismatics and the bureaucrats and still preside over a crappy economy that wasn't in anyone's interest, and still fool the country into thinking he was a great president. It's also easy to see how Bill Clinton was able to win over many of the same charismatics while appealing to the self-interest crowd and ignoring the rule-keepers entirely. After all, he was our nation's rule-breaker-in-chief, wasn't he?
As for Senator Obama: He seems to have the ability to attract supporters from all 4 constituencies, attesting to his brilliance as both a politician and a manager making him a true leader. Hence, moving forward, as we continue discussing electoral choices with voters, our approach depends on what each voter's motivators are. As a result, as we approach the general voting public, it is probably wise for the campaign as a whole and each of us as individuals to grasp these archetypes, understand each audience's needs (and hot buttons) and then proceed with each accordingly. Make sense?
Dear Barack Obama,
Please let me introduce myself ; my name is Luiz Carlos Caminha de Andrade, I am a twenty nine years old brazilian citizen, married, father of three children, living in Recife, the captal of the State of Pernambuco situated in the brazilian northeast (farmost east where it is closer to the African continent).
During a father´s day week this year (August 12,2007) I decided to gift my father, a sixty eight yars old retired lawyer, former teacher of the law and english language at UFPE (Federal university of Pernambuco)with one of your books,”Audacity of Hope”.Since we did not meet each other during that week I decided to read your masterpiece myself.
I was working for a French-American Company, in a chasing boat,on the Atlantic ocean, one hundred and twenty kilometers away from the brazilian coast ,as translator(English/Portuguese), looking for new resources of oil and natural gas, when I finished reading the chapter “Race”.Your conserns about the latino girl Cristina made me think about two of my kids,Daniel (5) and Letícia(9)who live in New York and I haven´t seen for two years .I thought of their future along with other American children like Malia and Sasha, their challenge keeping United States of América´s leadership and how to aproach them to the rest of the world .Your coments about descrimination and imigration in USA and specialy in Chicago made me remember the five prosper years that I lived with my kids in that city and the endurance it was to rase them during those years.
For strong reasons and no imigration incentive from the US governament after long years of hard work, tax contributions and exercise of citzenship, I decided to transfer “the American dream” to beyond the boundaries.Unfortunately I was not in US anymore when you became a senator but I was at Richard Daley Plaza, with some relatives visiting Chicago, during your pro-peace speach. Those people seemed to be determined to change the world´s course but it was not enough and the war happened.
I have tried to understand my people´s view about the foreign policies Americans have used lately. When I moved back to Brazil in January 2005 I opened a small restaurant in one of the busiest avenues in Recife, the idea was to install a wireless router and bring customers with that,it did not work and the business did not grow. One day ,when I still had hope to suceed in that business I spoke to one of my customers,a sport´s radio teller, mentioning that I wanted to stand an American flag in front of the store besides the brazilian flag that I had previously placed there. He imediatly told me – Do not do that! Be patriot! Impressed with his reaction specialy because of his politic and social position I decided to put that flag inside next to the cashier, right by a British flag that I got from a couple of English friends .During the following days I kept asking myself if I had done the right thing listening to that guy and not following my instincts that wanted that flag somewhere people could se it.
Many People here in Brazil love America and would like to go there to work, but when they notice Americans coming here they say we will loose with that. Many think of Americans as superpower millionaries, those with the money symbol in the eyes, and rarely realize that they are just like the Brazilian;working people!
Personaly I believe the Democratic party in US needs to present more exemples of how Important it is to America to aproach to its allies and discus an extention of its front and back yards, not only for the Army, executive and business people, but for the people in general, this way a stronger American comunity is built, just like the European one.I Understand how utopic it is ,as I said I lived there and know how afraid north american people are about imigration. So, I can imagine how they would see a free comunity. But diferent than many can see, it is a way to increase our chances to maitain peace in our continent.
As you know,we may not look at the distance between our countries as we did last century anymore.I insist saying we have a lot to learn from you but our culture, economy and nature are full of alternatives we can exchange. Also we grew up and are not those “monkeys” we used to be, beleive it or not.Something tells me that Brazilians and Americans and many others should share support to Africa for exemple. Not only sending that continent money as it has occurred and inspired people like Bob Gedolf, but supporting them with “contingent”.That does not mean the U$ 280 million he spent would not be usefull, in other words it goes beyond money can reach.
Before Brazilians can help Africans, we need help ourselves, organization! It may Appear a little confusing, how can I help someone if I need help myself...? well help is multual, life is an interest exchange.
After observing people´s atitude with critic eyes of someone who lived in US for five years I can say that Brazilians need to understand that acording to “trafc law”when sirens sound and lights lite on your back mirror, it is time to pull over.I understand that our case is simpler than most Afrincan countries, though, we still have a lot to do.Which nation in the world does not have this same need ?I have observed a lot of improovments (or projects of improovments) in my state, some of them will give us more power in energy sources and mobility. Our airport was rebilt and its sofistication can be compared to O´hare,Midway,LAX,Heathrow,Charles de gole and others that I have visited, still our air trafic control is caotic. Our Train sistem was extended but the new lines have been closed for over two years. Some roads heve been duplicated but it is time for the projects to be finished and they are still half way done.Interesting to say that both ,the train and the roads, lead to the area where the state grows the most, where a Pretroleum refinery and a shipyard have been built and on the way for the most summer visited beach where many Brazilian midle class and European people spend their vacations. So, with regions like that spread throughout the country along with an improovment in energy production methods and a little political organization sense in our control agencies, we will be able to grow along the rest of the continent , take advantage of our proximity, roots and even our friendly soccer (that enchants Africans and South Americans more than Chicago bears does)and stabilish stronger ties between the two continents, sending a message to the International community.
We ,democratic people, need to move towards Amazon, control it before Chaves does!We need to reorganize our wealth, our federal capital Brasilia ,minas gerais state (rich in minerals), our coast faced to China and Índia.Once it is done, Canada,USA,Mexico ,the entire Central América,Brazil and the other countries in South América, each with its own challenge may form a strong continent called Whole America.Looking from this side of the emisphere ,it is how it could begin.
I imagine how you feel when you are away from your family ,as I write this letter to you,I have been away from my wife Raquel and my yougest daughter Marina who turned three months on father´s day,for twenty days.Besides that I have been away from the older two of my kids for over two years. Before I say good bye I would like to ask Your Honor one question...; How long would you stand in line waiting at Mc Arthur´s if you realized the line was not moving?
God Bless America!
