October 6, 2008By ROGER COHEN
Kiplin' vs. Palin
Repeat after me: pigs can't fly. Repeat after me: if you don't work you die. Repeat after me: fire will certainly burn.
Perhaps these truths seem self-evident. But let's face it, the whole Wall Street debacle, with its cost of some $700 billion to generations of Americans, was based on the fathomless human ability to disregard facts and believe in cloud-cuckoo-land.
Risk no longer existed. The penniless could afford a $200,000 house. Real estate prices could only rise. Securities full of toxic loans would prove benign. Debt was desirable, leverage lovely, greed great. Two and two made five. The moon was a balloon and streets were lined with gold.
How could it happen? That outraged question springs now to everyone's lips. But from Dutch tulips to Californian dotcoms, great heists have happened and will again. No flight from reality is as sweet as the illusion that money grows on trees.
A friend wrote suggesting I take a look at Rudyard Kipling's poem, "The Gods of the Copybook Headings," in the light of current events. Written in 1919, when Kipling was 53, in an England drained by the Great War, which had taken the life of his teenage son, the poem makes sobering reading.
A copybook was a school exercise book used to practice handwriting. At the tops of pages, proverbs and sayings (like "Stick to the Devil You Know") appeared in exemplary script to be copied down the page by pupils. The truisms were called "copybook headings."

ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain set a new tone for the Republican National Convention last Thursday, with speakers abandoning many of the tough words aimed at Barack Obama that had characterized the previous night. But the picture they painted blurred some facts.
Some examples:
MCCAIN: "We lost their trust when instead of freeing ourselves from a dangerous dependence on foreign oil, both parties and Senator Obama passed another corporate welfare bill for oil companies. We lost their trust, when we valued our power over our principles."
THE FACTS: Yes, Obama voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry. But Obama has said he supported the legislation because it provided money for renewable energy. Obama did vote for an effort to strip the legislation of the oil and gas industry tax breaks. When that failed, he voted for the overall measure.
MCCAIN: "When a public school fails to meet its obligations to students, parents deserve a choice in the education of their children. And I intend to give it to them. Some may choose a better public school. Some may choose a private one. Many will choose a charter school. But they will have that choice and their children will have that opportunity."
THE FACTS: Despite his goal of giving parents choice in the schools their children attend, he is not proposing a federal voucher program that would provide public money for private school tuition. McCain is proposing only to expand the District of Columbia's voucher program. During his 2000 run for the presidency, he did propose a more than $5 billion school voucher plan, but he is not proposing one now. His advisers say President Bush's No Child Left Behind Law is aimed at giving parents more choice, and he would make improvements to that.
JOHN MCCAIN: "Again and again, I've worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed. That's how I will govern as president. I will reach out my hand to anyone to help me get this country moving again. I have that record and the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not."
THE FACTS: It is certainly true that McCain, with two decades in the Senate, has worked in a bipartisan fashion on a number of issues. Legislation that bears his name often carries the name of a Democrat as well. On campaign finance he worked with Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis.; on immigration with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.; on climate change with Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn. Obama, elected in 2004, has a much slimmer record of accomplishment. He did work with Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana to pass legislation to further curtail illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. Unlike McCain, however, Obama did not put himself at odds with his own party leaders by working with Lugar.
SEN. LINDSAY GRAHAM: "Those who predicted failure, voted to cut off funding for our troops, and played politics with our national security will be footnotes in history. There's no doubt about it, we are on the road to victory. ...While Barack Obama expresses appreciation for our troops' service, he refuses to acknowledge their success."
THE FACTS: Obama voted in April of last year for legislation that financed the military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan but included a nonbinding call to pull troops out of Iraq. President Bush vetoed it. Then in May he voted against a subsequent financing bill because the pull-out provision had been removed. The bill, however, passed overwhelmingly. Before his May vote, Obama had voted for every bill that financed the troops since he joined the Senate. On Thursday, campaigning in Lancaster, Pa., Obama conceded that the troop surge had succeeded in reducing violence "beyond our wildest dreams." But, he said the United States government still needs to decide when to "turn over responsibility to the Iraqis for their own country?"
U.S. REP. MARSHA BLACKBURN: (Referring to vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin) "We met a woman who, with the bravery that only the mother of five can summon, said 'thanks but no thanks' to the good ole' boy earmarks."
THE FACTS: Palin has cut back on pork-barrel project requests, but in her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. She did reject plans to build the notorious "Bridge to Nowhere" but only after Congress had cut off funding for it. The bridge was a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport. Palin did leave in place a $27 million federally funded project to build the approach road to the bridge. Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, a Democrat, said Thursday that Palin first told Ketchikan officials during a campaign stop in 2006 that she supported it. When she became governor, and after the project became the subject of national ridicule, she pulled the state's portion of funding.
Eye on the Right: Conservative Computer Security Expert Blows the Whistle on Lack of Ballot Security
Those who have followed the growing controversy over electronic voting machines are well aware that, as we have highlighted, these machines are a direct threat to our elections for multiple reasons. First, all machines and source codes that have been examined by computer scientists have proven to be highly insecure. Second, these machines have broken down and lost votes in every national election in which they have been used. And third, Premier Election Systems (formerly "Diebold") has recently admitted that in fact there is a "critical programming error" in their machines that can affect vote totals. Critics have charged that at least two statewide races have been stolen and even Robert Kennedy Jr. has laid out the case for computer fraud in the 2004 presidential election.
Is History Siding With Obama's Economic Plan?By ALAN S. BLINDER
CLEARLY, there are major differences between the economic policies of Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. Mr. McCain wants more tax cuts for the rich; Mr. Obama wants tax cuts for the poor and middle class. The two men also disagree on health care, energy and many other topics.
Such differences are hardly surprising. Democrats and Republicans have followed different approaches to the economy for as long as there have been Democrats and Republicans. Longer, actually. Remember Hamilton versus Jefferson?
Many Americans know that there are characteristic policy differences between the two parties. But few are aware of two important facts about the post-World War II era, both of which are brilliantly delineated in a new book, "Unequal Democracy," by Larry M. Bartels, a professor of political science at Princeton. Understanding them might help voters see what could be at stake, economically speaking, in November.
I call the first fact the Great Partisan Growth Divide. Simply put, the United States economy has grown faster, on average, under Democratic presidents than under Republicans.
The stark contrast between the whiz-bang Clinton years and the dreary Bush years is familiar because it is so recent. But while it is extreme, it is not atypical. Data for the whole period from 1948 to 2007, during which Republicans occupied the White House for 34 years and Democrats for 26, show average annual growth of real gross national product of 1.64 percent per capita under Republican presidents versus 2.78 percent under Democrats.
That 1.14-point difference, if maintained for eight years, would yield 9.33 percent more income per person, which is a lot more than almost anyone can expect from a tax cut.
He only met her once and only spoke to her on the phone once last week??? Risky strategy for the guy who would be the oldest elected President. Also shows bad judgement and puts this country at risk!
The story behind the Palin surprise
I'm posting this article not to disparage Cindy McCain, but rather to point out the hypocrisy of the Republican "attacks".
In this article, we have all the things the Republicans are trying to stick on Barack Obama. After I read this I thought, gee, someone should really be careful about the stones they throw at someone else's glass house. But wait there's more - how 'bout those McCain family values and the ethical test of alcohol taxes - oh wait, not when they affect your own interests.
Oh yeah, one more thing... Where was John McCain's flag lapel pin when he introduced his running mate. Sarah's flag lapel pin was HUGE! She must be more patriotic than Sen. McCain, eh?
So here ya go - drugs, mobs, criminal ties (family ties no less, not just guilty by association), lying, cheating, stealing..... and then there's Sarah Pilan. What was all that about with the bridge to nowhere? She said that she said "Thanks, but no thanks" - but is that what really happened? Nope - she was all for the idea in the beginning, she even accepted some of the funding. In March of this year, the project was so far behind that it was going to take an additional $239,000,000.00 to complete. She realized she didn't have enough to complete the project and it was unlikely that she would get additional funds, so she canceled it. It's just not the same as "Thanks, but no thanks". The duplicity of these people gives me the creeps.
Cindy McCain: Painful secretsBy Leonard Doyle in WashingtonSaturday, 30 August 2008
She would rather be known as a philanthropist than as a wealthy heiress. But the wife of the Republican candidate could not avoid having other aspects of her life come under the media spotlight
Americans don't know a lot about the prospective Republican First Lady, apart from the crucial fact that she is a fabulously wealthy heiress to the Hensley beer fortune in Arizona. Recently they learned that she owns more homes than she or John McCain can enumerate. By the last count, Cindy McCain owns 10 homes. There is an apartment near Washington DC; two condominiums in Coronado, near San Diego as well as the one her father left her in La Jolla. She lives in a $4,700,000.00 pad on top of one of Phoenix's fanciest new luxury towers. She also owns holiday homes in the countryside near Sedona, Arizona.
Her vast wealth and many homes make it difficult for researchers to pin down certain aspects of her personal life and a Washington Post team of investigative reporters has so far turned up little of substance to embarrass the candidate before the November elections. The Hensleys have long been members of the Phoenix elite.
Great convention, let's keep that momentum going!
August 29, 2008Gallup Daily: Obama Stretches Lead to 8 Points
Lead one of largest in campaign
PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking finds Barack Obama moving to an eight percentage point lead over John McCain, 49% to 41%.
Obama's significant lead over McCain almost certainly reflects the effects of the Democratic National Convention. The two presidential candidates were tied at 45% in the last Gallup Poll Daily tracking results conducted entirely before the convention began. The latest results include interviews from Tuesday through Thursday night, though most of the interviewing was conducted before Obama's acceptance speech late Thursday.
Dear Friends,
I just returned from a trip to Rwanda with my friend Senator Bill Frist, MD and leaders from both political parties. Senator Frist and I went to Rwanda not as politicians, but as students, to learn about people who are rebuilding their country after the unspeakable horror of genocide.
My news from Rwanda is very encouraging. The hard work of the Rwandan people and the generosity of Americans are coming together in partnership to create a model for how we can end poverty in the most desperate countries on earth.
I came home more convinced then ever that we're all in this together. Rwandans' daily struggle to start anew, even as they deal with poverty and disease, is also our own struggle to build a more prosperous and safer world.
To further the progress in Rwanda and spread that hope, we need to take full advantage of this election year. That's why Senator Frist and I will be meeting with our respective parties' leaders in the next few weeks, as they're writing the platforms that will be unveiled at the presidential nominating conventions in Denver and Minneapolis. These platforms contain the policies on which Barack Obama and John McCain will campaign for the presidency.
We're going to ask these committees to make sure that their platforms take on the generational challenge of tackling global poverty, and we need your help to do it.
Click the link to sign the petition seen below, and I'll deliver your signature when I meet with representatives from the Democratic Party - and Senator Frist will do the same on the Republican side - to ask these political leaders to include extreme poverty and global disease in their 2008 platforms. http://www.one.org/platforms/
As a proud American, I urge you to make ending extreme poverty and global disease in the developing world a core part of your 2008 platform by including commitments to:Fight AIDS, TB and malaria and improve basic health services, particularly for mothers and young children Ensure access to clean water, basic sanitation and sufficient food supplies Spur economic growth through equitable trade and investment policies Modernize and increase development assistance, focusing on partnership, transparency and accountability Achieve universal primary education
In Rwanda, I saw the tremendous impact of some of the very things you've worked to make possible. Deaths from malaria have been cut by 66%, in large part because of the increase in bed net and anti-malarial medicine distribution. The death rate from malaria, as well AIDS and TB is going to continue to fall, because of your work pressuring Congress to reauthorize PEPFAR, America's global AIDS bill, for five more years.
Victories like PEPFAR are saving lives and giving people in places like Rwanda new hope, making the whole world a safer and more prosperous place. Now we have the chance to make ending extreme poverty and global disease a focus for the Democratic and Republican parties.
Click below to sign the petition and I'll deliver your signature when I meet with Democratic Party leaders to ask them to make the struggle against global poverty a priority in 2008. http://www.one.org/platforms/
My late friend Paul Wellstone was fond of saying that, "The poor don't have a lobbyist. That's why I went to Washington." The hope for a better future that Senator Frist and I saw in Rwanda shows what's possible when two million of us "go to Washington" on behalf of the world's poorest people. This summer, together, we have the chance to go to Denver and Minneapolis and show that ending global poverty is a priority for both political parties.
Thank you for joining me,
Senator Tom Daschle ONE Member and National Co-Chair ONE Vote '08

Change We Can Believe InAn Open Letter to Barack Obama
Dear Senator Obama,
We write to congratulate you on the tremendous achievements of your campaign for the presidency of the United States.
Your candidacy has inspired a wave of political enthusiasm like nothing seen in this country for decades. In your speeches, you have sketched out a vision of a better future--in which the United States sheds its warlike stance around the globe and focuses on diplomacy abroad and greater equality and freedom for its citizens at home--that has thrilled voters across the political spectrum. Hundreds of thousands of young people have entered the political process for the first time, African-American voters have rallied behind you, and many of those alienated from politics-as-usual have been re-engaged.
You stand today at the head of a movement that believes deeply in the change you have claimed as the mantle of your campaign. The millions who attend your rallies, donate to your campaign and visit your website are a powerful testament to this new movement's energy and passion.
ACLU Challenges Unconstitutional Spying Law
In July 2008, Congress capitulated to the White House's demands and scare tactics by passing the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, giving the NSA even more power to spy on Americans without warrants than it exercised under its illegal surveillance program.
The ACLU is asking the court to protect the privacy rights of all Americans and declare the FAA unconstitutional.
Why the FISA Amendments Act is Unconstitutional The FISA Amendments Act gives the government nearly unfettered access to Americans' international communications. Government surveillance that sweeps up the communications of U.S. citizens and residents should be conducted in a manner that comports with the Constitution, and in particular with the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits "general warrants" and unreasonable searches. The FISA Amendments Act allows the government to engage in mass acquisition of U.S. citizens' and residents' international communications with virtually no restrictions. Some of the main problems with the law are:

Thank Your Senators For Passing PEPFAR
This week the Senate reauthorized PEPFAR, America's lifesaving response to the global emergency of AIDS, TB and malaria. 80 senators stood with us to pass the bill, with bipartisan majorities voting to defeat amendments that would have undercut PEPFAR.
Now our senators need to hear from us that we appreciate their vote and support American global leadership in the struggle to the suffering caused by these diseases.
Send the letter below to your senators.
I am proud that as my senator, you voted to reauthorize PEPFAR for five more years. Your vote will save lives in some of the most vulnerable parts of the world, and represents the very best in American diplomacy and global leadership. I am particularly proud that we are keeping our commitments to lead the effort to end the suffering caused by global AIDS, TB and malaria, even at a time when we face many challenges here at home. Thank you for your leadership, (Your Name)
Thank you for your leadership,
(Your Name)
Not sure if your senators voted for PEPFAR reauthorization? See the complete list of senators who voted for the bill, below the fold:
Help the ACLU spell it out for them.
Moments after President Bush signed the bill into law, the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the unconstitutional FISA Amendments Act.
Help us demonstrate to our leaders that we believe in freedom -- not fear. We're running a full-page ad in a national newspaper this week that carries that simple message.
But we need you to add your signature letting Congress know exactly how you feel about them selling out your right to privacy. Add your name to the ACLU's newspaper ad. We'll do our best to get as many names as possible in the ad, but may not be able to fit every one.
Is this law for real?
Five more years of American leadership in the effort to prevent and treat AIDS, TB and malaria is going to come down to a few hours of debate in the United States Senate.
The President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has finally made it to the Senate floor for debate and a series of critical votes. We need you to call your senators today and encourage them to vote to pass this bill.
There is a chance that an individual senator could raise something called a "budget point of order," in which case we'd need 60 votes to bypass this additional obstacle or else the entire bill will be defeated.
After months of deadlock and delays, the bill to extend PEPFAR, America’s powerful response to these global killers, is moving and it’s moving fast. Debate on the bill began last night and votes will begin today. But first, our senators need to hear from all of us that we strongly support this bill and call on them to vote for its passage at the current $50 billion level.
We believe that there is strong, bipartisan support to pass PEPFAR, but we're not out of the woods yet. This is the moment we need you most. Please call now and ask your senators to support this bill for $50 billion dollars in critical global AIDS, TB and malaria over the next five years.
You can call Senators Robert Casey and Arlen Specter in Washington at the numbers listed below and ask them to be champions for the millions of people around the world who are depending on us in their fight to beat these deadly, but treatable diseases.
Call now:
When you speak to your senators' staff, make sure to tell them:
July 14, 2008 He claims 23 million small-business owners would pay higher tax rates under Obama. He's wrong. The vast majority would see no change, and many would get a cut.
Summary McCain has repeatedly claimed that Obama would raise tax rates for 23 million small-business owners. It's a false and preposterously inflated figure.
We find that the overwhelming majority of those small-business owners would see no increase, because they earn too little to be affected. Obama's tax proposal would raise rates only on couples making more than $250,000 or singles earning more than $200,000.
McCain argues that Obama's proposed increase is a job-killer. He has a point. It's true that increasing taxes on those at the top would leave them less money for other purposes, including investment and hiring in the case of business owners. But the number of business owners who would see their rates go up would be only a small fraction of what McCain says. Many would see their taxes go down.
Analysis Sen. John McCain has been making this false claim over and over, starting with a July 7 speech announcing his "jobs for America" plan:
McCain, July 7: Senator Obama's tax increases will hurt the economy even more, and destroy jobs across this country. If you are one of the 23 million small-business owners in America who files as an individual rate payer, Senator Obama is going to raise your tax rates.
He repeated it in an address to the League of United Latin American Citizens the next day:
McCain, July 8: Keeping individual rates low isn't intended as a favor to wealthy Americans. 23 million small-business owners pay those rates, and taking more money from them deprives them of the capital they need to invest and grow and hire.
He said it again at a campaign event July 9:
McCain, July 9: If you are one of the 23 million small-business owners in America who files as an individual rate payer, Senator Obama is willing to raise your tax rates.
And he repeated it in the first of a planned series of radio addresses July 12:
McCain, July 12: If you are one of the 23 million small-business owners who files as an individual rate payer, watch out - because as your business grows, my opponent proposes to raise your taxes.
But repeating a falsehood doesn't make it true. McCain's 23 million claim is a bogus figure. [more...]
Our Warrantless Wiretapping Lawsuitposted by Katrina vanden Heuvel on 07/10/2008 @ 3:36pm
This afternoon, President Bush signed the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, a piece of legislation that will needlessly expand the government's ability to spy on Americans and ensure that the country never learns the full extent of Bush's unlawful wiretapping. There were many good Senators who showed courage in standing up to the White House and for the Constitution, but not enough.
A few hours after Bush's signing, The Nation joined with the ACLU in a lawsuit filed in the US District Court (Southern District) of New York challenging the constitutionality of the Act. The Nation is suing on behalf of itself, our staff and two of our contributing writers--Chris Hedges and Naomi Klein. The defendants are the Attorney General of the United States, Michael Mukasey; John M. "Mike" McConnell, Director of National Intelligence; and Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander, Director of the National Security Agency and Chief of the Security Service. We filed suit along with a coalition of other plaintiffs including Amnesty International USA, Human Rights Watch, Global Fund for Women, PEN American Center, Washington Office on Latin America, Service Employees International Union and several private attorneys.
Why are we joining this lawsuit? For 143 years, The Nation has believed that an essential element of patriotism is the unyielding defense of civil liberties. Immediately after 9/11, as a fog of national security enveloped official Washington and the mainstream media enlisted in the Administration's war, it was clear to us that the need for an independent and critical press seemed never more urgent. The speedy passage of the repressive Patriot Act, with scarcely a murmur of dissent in Congress, and the establishment of military tribunals were troubling signs that a wartime crackdown on civil liberties was under way and called for vigorous opposition. Criticizing government policy in wartime is a not a path to popularity. Our patriotism was questioned, we were called "anti-American." Yet, as it has at different times in our country's turbulent history, The Nation marched to a different drummer and stood firm in defense of our core constitutional values--believing then, as we do now, that it is possible to defend this country from terrorists while also protecting the rights and freedoms that define our nation.
Today, we are proud to join with the ACLU and other plaintiffs in this lawsuit in the belief that the government 's surveillance activities should respect, not trample, the Constitution. Our history as America's oldest weekly journal of opinion has taught us that surveillance powers can easily become a threat to a free and open society.
In the brief filed today in the US District Court, we provide reasons for participating in this defense of our republic. Here are a few:
Specifically, we cite the work of our regular contributors Chris Hedges and Naomi Klein in our filing. Hedges, in his reporting on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the so-called war on terror regularly communicates with sources in countries like Palestine, Iran, Syria and Sudan. Klein, in her essential critique of the extension of radical free-market capitalism and the resurgence of imperial militarism, routinely communicates with journalists, political activists, human rights campaigners in the Middle East, South America, and around the world. Sadly, we believe that the communications critical to their reporting could and would be monitored under the FISA Amendments Act. Certainly scores of other journalists would shoulder the same risk.
We are proud, then, to join with other patriots who understand the government's legitimate interest in protecting the nation against terrorism can be fulfilled without sacrificing the constitutional liberties that make the US worth defending.
