The former VP "Dick" Cheney keeps repeating the same tired refrain, as if he is stuttering badly from drunkeness, that he "kept the country safe" by using torture. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Upon taking office, George W Bush and Dick Cheney were warned by the CIA and Clinton intelligence officials about the dire threat from Bin Laden and Al Queda. Bush and Cheney paid no attention to the warnings. In the spring of 2001, Condolezza Rice, the new National Security Advisor appointed by W Bush, published an article in Foreign Affairs magazine in which she stated that the threat from terrorists was overblown, a relic from a paranoid Clinton administration which was trying to divert attention away from scandals. The real threat to America came from Russia and China.
Over the summer of 2001, numerous American intelligence agencies were reporting alarming amounts of "chatter" being intercepted over the internet and telephone indicating a huge attack on America was coming. The NSA, CIA, FBI, and Defense Intelligence all were warning of an imminent attack. In August, W Bush, Cheney, and other top officials were given a Daily Briefing titled, "Bin Laden determined to attack the U.S." W Bush, and most importantly, Dick Cheney, did NOTHING, in spite of the seriousness of the warnings.
On September 11th, 2001, the most horrific terrorist attack ever by foreign nationals was perpetrated against the American people. Almost 3000 innocent Americans lost their lives. In spite of repeated warnings from multiple sources, W and Cheney did NOTHING to stop the attack.
Now, after this failure to protect America from the worst terrorist attack ever, Dick Cheney has the gall to claim that he kept America safe through torture. How is allowing 3000 people to die after you were warned for almost 9 months straight, "keeping us safe"???

But history tells us that they cannot do it alone. From landing on the moon, to sequencing the human genome, to inventing the Internet, America has been the first to cross that new frontier because we had leaders who paved the way: leaders like President Kennedy, who inspired us to push the boundaries of the known world and achieve the impossible; leaders who not only invested in our scientists, but who respected the integrity of the scientific process.
Because the truth is that promoting science isn’t just about providing resources—it’s about protecting free and open inquiry. It’s about ensuring that facts and evidence are never twisted or obscured by politics or ideology. It’s about listening to what our scientists have to say, even when it’s inconvenient—especially when it’s inconvenient. Because the highest purpose of science is the search for knowledge, truth and a greater understanding of the world around us. That will be my goal as President of the United States—and I could not have a better team to guide me in this work.
Dr. John Holdren has agreed to serve as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. John is a professor and Director of the Program on Science, Technology, and Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, as well as President and Director of the Woods Hole Research Center. A physicist renowned for his work on climate and energy, he’s received numerous honors and awards for his contributions and has been one of the most passionate and persistent voices of our time about the growing threat of climate change. I look forward to his wise counsel in the years ahead.
John will also serve as a Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology—or PCAST—as will Dr. Harold Varmus and Dr. Eric Lander. Together, they will work to remake PCAST into a vigorous external advisory council that will shape my thinking on the scientific aspects of my policy priorities.
Dr. Varmus is no stranger to this work. He is not just a path-breaking scientist, having won a Nobel Prize for his research on the causes of cancer—he also served as Director of the National Institutes of Health during the Clinton Administration. I am grateful he has answered the call to serve once again.
Dr. Eric Lander is the Founding Director of the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard and was one of the driving forces behind mapping the human genome—one of the greatest scientific achievements in history. I know he will be a powerful voice in my Administration as we seek to find the causes and cures of our most devastating diseases.
Finally, Dr. Jane Lubchenco has accepted my nomination as the Administrator of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is devoted to conserving our marine and coastal resources and monitoring our weather. An internationally known environmental scientist and ecologist and former President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Jane has advised the President and Congress on scientific matters, and I am confident she will provide passionate and dedicated leadership at NOAA.
Working with these leaders, we will seek to draw on the power of science to both meet our challenges across the globe and revitalize our economy here at home. And I’ll be speaking more after the New Year about how my Administration will engage leaders in the technology community and harness technology and innovation to create jobs, enhance America’s competitiveness and advance our national priorities.

For weeks I have been beating the following drum of analysis on how properly restructuring the auto industry with pure electric hybrids is THE critical magic bullet response to everything from global warming to restoring America’s manufacturing sector to drastically curtailing our oil-producing enemies ability to fund global terrorism.
Mickiboop, a Veteran Obama Blogger, gave me a link to a recent 60 minutes episode which details the Saudi Oil Biz. While the segment is largely a commercial for the wonders of the Saudi’s Oil Empire... there were several EXTREMELY revealing moments in interviews with high Saudi officials. Especially take note of what the Saudi Oil Minister says at the end of segment #1 and the look of deep fear and defensiveness in his eyes when he says it... it totally backs up this analysis...
“ But the oil companies know the cats are out of the bag now... just like when the cigarette companies finally couldn't resist the pressures of the ultimate high court... the court of global mass public opinion (no matter how many lying 'scientists' they trotted out to support their nefarious claims that cigarettes did not cause cancer... or in the case of big oil... that global climate crisis isn't real).”
We need to take the Auto CEO's up on what they said at the house and senate hearings... that they were ready to allow for federally mandated restructuring... meaning we can finally get them to build the kind of pure electric hybrids which will actually become best-sellers all over the world.
That old addage about the Chinese symbols making the word 'crisis' are one for 'danger' and one for 'opportunity' combined was never more apt. We are literally on this razor's edge brink... on the brink of destroying ourselves via global climate destruction and on the brink of saving ourselves via a complete restructuring of the auto AND energy industries towards wind/solar electricity grids and rechargeable pure electric hybrids (especially at a time when China and India are developing exploding middle class populations who will all be looking to buy the cars of the future).
If Obama stays resolute and doesn't compromise the obviously MASSIVE leverage we now have to make a revolutionary shift to save the planet AND millions of jobs by shifting to mass production of electric hybrids... we may very well get to witness an even more momentous historic accomplishment than his Presidential victory.
Mass production of pure electric, wind/solar powered hybrids is the lynchpin essential to every aspect of Obama's America and World Transforming agenda... whether we're talking about greening the planet or creating millions of good-paying jobs, or limiting our oil-producing enemies abilities to fund global terrorism thereby greatly reducing the threat of future wars over oil.
PS-- Why do you think gas prices are going so low right now? Because the oil industry has read the above-mentioned handwriting on the global wall and they are rightly panic stricken. The American Automobile Industry has proven one thing emphatically... It is literally TOO STUPID TO LIVE (In it's current brain-dead form).
The current financial crisis in the auto industry offers the Obama Administration a literally GOLDEN opportunity to achieve some MAJOR campaign goals. How?
Simple.
Say to the big three automakers... you want a multi-billion dollar bailout? Fine. In order to get it, you will dump your top management and resurrect the EV1. That's right... GM's original best electric car.
JUST AS IT WAS A MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY TO CONVERT AUTO PRODUCTION DURING WWII TO BUILD THE WEAPONS WHICH DEFEATED HITLER, SO TOO NOW WE WILL CONVERT OUR GAS GUZZLING MIDDLE EAST OIL ADDICTION INDUSTRY INTO ONE WHICH FREES US FROM THAT CORPORATE CRACK-PIPELINE ADDICTION ONCE AND FOR ALL.
More practical and affordable than the Chevy Volt... the EV1 is a normal sized family sedan that can go 100 MILES ON A SINGLE CHARGE. The Chevy Volt only goes 40 miles and costs an estimated $45,000 while the EV1 costs around $27,000... add in a $7,000 bailout funded tax break to the consumer and just watch how these electric vehicles will fly off the shelves. Another huge plus regarding the EV1 is that the production techniques already exist since it was produced in the 1990's for the California zero-emission imperative.
As a matter of fact... while we're at it... let's just boot the top executives and boards... force these strategic manufacturing changes, and then fill the management posts with vetted public service appointments. After all, if we're going to be the chief shareholders... it SHOULD be up to us how these companies are run.
Socialism shmocialism... I WANT PRACTICAL RESULTS NOT THE SAME OLD INCOMPETENT FAT PIG GLUTTONY & THIEVERY.
GM's bogus argument for scrapping the revolutionary EV1 was that it was a loss leader... meaning they took a loss on every car because the demand was not there. Yeah right. What do you say we try that again and you won't have to worry about losses BECAUSE WE WILL BE PAYING FOR IT.
As a matter of fact... we will simply DEMAND that you build these green, job creating, middle east oil weaning vehicles OR NO GO ON THE BAILOUT DOUGH!!! Plus... we won't even have to wait for developmental ramp-up BECAUSE THE BLUEPRINTS AND PRODUCTION TECHNIQUE FOR THE EV1 ALREADY EXISTS!!!
Better still... we will DEMAND that GM share the blueprints with Ford and Chrysler who can then build their own style versions of the EV1... thereby meeting sure-to-be-exploding demand, driving down production costs, and paying GM a percentage of their profits.
You think there might be a market for a car which can be sold on the benefit of saving soldiers lives by getting them out of the middle east oil business AND saves the consumer 100's of dollars per month in fuel savings which can then go back into the economy? And as every junior economist will tell you... consumer spending makes up fully two thirds of all economic activity.
So there it is GM, Ford and Chrysler... you want the multi-billion dollar bailout? FINE... WE'RE TAKING YOU OVER AND MASS PRODUCING THE EV1 NOW!!!
Oh... and by the way... the EV1 will rapidly become the fastest selling American export EVER. Think that might be good for jobs, your bottom line, AND fighting global warming... not to mention the not so little ancillary benefit of dropping the price of oil even further thereby limiting our enemies ability to fund global terrorism via their depleted oil revenues? (Iran).

PS -- And when GM whines about the Chevy Volt being undercut... simply say... that car is out of reach for the average consumer anyway at $45,000 and impractical with only a 40 mile charge range... think of it as the Corvette of electric cars... a car that a GM VP admitted yesterday on MSNBC would not even be able to mass produce the essential batteries until 2010 AT BEST... the EV1 will end up outselling the toyota corolla RIGHT NOW.
Simple really. OPEC and the Exxon/Mobils of the world are running scared... Why? Because the current American auto manufacturer restructuring gives us the truly golden opportunity to revolutionize an about to explode global demand for pure electric, wind and solar rechargeable cars.
With the exponential growth of China and India's middle class... whoever is first to mass produce electric cars with a REAL driving range of 100 miles per charge will truly become the next manufacturing superpower... and guess what... AMERICA ALREADY HAS THE TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE THIS ECONOMY SAVING DREAM A REALITY.
All the economic experts have projected China to overtake our economy in about ten years... well, HERE'S A NEWS FLASH FOR THE SO-CALLED EXPERTS... IF WE START MASS PRODUCING THE EV! ELECTRIC VEHICLE WE CAN STOP THAT SLAVE LABOR/BRUTAL TYRANNY BY CHINA IN IT'S WORLD DOMINATING/TWISTING TRACKS.
And then of course there's even more job creating possibilities...
High speed rail buildout linking our cities to our suburbs may be one of the most important infrastructure job creators America can muster. All plans for highway and bridge rebuilding should integrate a high speed rail system at the onset so as to not end up making such rail buildout more difficult down the road.
Combine these efforts with turbine buildout of the wind corridor along with vast solar arrays in our desert southwest and a mass production of EV1 already existing electric auto manufacture which will create HUGE international demand for a KEY American product line... and just watch how we turn a near depression into one of the biggest and longest sustained economic booms the world has ever seen.
High speed rail is also an excellent way to rechannel bloated defense industry contractors/ jobs into constructive infrastructure jobs thereby thwarting the all too common business urge of military industrial contractors to sabotage attempts to pare down the defense budget... which happens to be the most likely place (DOD) to find billions in essential federal budget savings.
Of course, it also makes sense to increase vital funding for Veterans Affairs... what better more common sensical place to get that essential funding than from bloated unneccessary defense programs/antiquated weapons systems. Naturally, this will require a Secretary of Defense with both the military stature and political wisdom to get this cost-cutting job done with the least amount of corporate/political interference/sabotage.
Colin Powell or some like-minded military hero/pragmatist would be best suited to this all-important reform function cabinet post.
Given our current economic woes, no one can successfully argue against the simple fact that ONLY the most essential weapons systems are the ones worth funding anymore... especially support of our veterans as the ultimate living weapons system.
This integrated approach to national repair will succeed because it recognizes the essential rot and corruption which has led to financial disaster across all economic fronts and addresses them all with a comprehensive no-nonsense approach that has been sorely lacking in our governmental function for far too long.
America has the innovation and the spirit of team effort essential for success in rebuilding our nation. Now it's high time we prove this to ourselves and to the entire watching world.
No corner of the globe is yet immune to the painful condition that has plagued the entirety of human history... our self-destructive worst instincts and behaviors vs. our best attempts to live as one, free of the fear and loathing which leaves the world enslaved and leads inevitably to ruin.
America the Promised land vs. America the front for global thieves has been a battle raging since the Revolutionary War when the first congressmen included war profiteers who got rich by selling shoddy equipment to our armed forces. Sound familiar?
