Health Care Advocates Call on Voinovich to Support Affordable Health Care for All
Wednesday, health care advocates gathered from around the state concerned that the affordability standards in the U.S.
Senate Finance passed version of health care reform do not go far enough. On the heels of the Senate Finance
Committee's historic vote, advocates delivered their message and hundreds of signatures on postcards to U.S. Sen.
George Voinovich urging his support of affordable health care for all.
At a Statehouse press conference and rally prior to a meeting with Voinovich, Cathy Levine highlighted the historic
importance of the Senate action on health care reform.
"No issue before Congress could be more important than ensuring that cancer survivors, those with chronic conditions,
and those whose wages are stretched to pay for food and shelter have access to the richest health care system in the
world," said Levine, co-chair of Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage (OCHC). "We ask Sen. Voinovich to support health
care reform that gives all Ohioans access to high quality, affordable health care."
Joining the rally and meeting with Voinovich were health care advocates from across the state, many motivated by their
own personal experiences. Anne Creech, a two-time cancer survivor, traveled from Toledo to share her story. After
dropping her employer-based insurance at her employer's request, Creech struggled to find affordable coverage in Ohio's
individual market as a cancer survivor.
"I pay $500 each month for a high deductible insurance plan that excludes coverage for cancer screenings and other tests
I need," said Creech. "I am putting off important preventive screenings because I cannot afford to pay for them out of
pocket."
The issue of affordability is especially important to the age group just below Medicare eligibility, advocates pointed out.
Those aged 50 to 64 often face coverage exclusions or higher premiums because of pre-existing conditions and
age. "That is a key reason why 13 percent of adults age 50-64, or 7.1 million adults, were uninsured in 2007 - a figure
that is growing rapidly in our current difficult economy. Even those with insurance often struggle with high premiums and
cost sharing obligations that can make health care unaffordable."
George Sonnichsen, an AARP volunteer, called for fair treatment for older Americans: "We must prevent insurers from
denying coverage or charging higher rates based on age or health status and subsidies must ensure that coverage -
including both premiums and co-pays and deductibles - is affordable for everyone."
Health care reform is also an important issue to the faith community. The United Methodist Book of Discipline calls health
care "a basic human right," and states that it is a "governmental responsibility to provide all citizens with health care."
Alicia Rivers, a commissioned deacon in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church and a member of the
leadership team of Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage spoke to the faith community's responsibility in the health care
reform debate.
"Health care for all is not an option from a faith perspective, but rather a necessity. We are called to care for persons as
God cares for them, providing out of abundance rather than scarcity. Access to care is not a privilege but a right for all,"
explained Rivers. She continued, "We call on Sen. Voinovich, who is known as a man of faith, to make affordable health
care for all Ohioans - and all Americans - his legacy."
According to OCHC, the Senate Finance passed bill includes the some safeguards for consumers but the coalition wants
the Senate to adopt affordability provisions that go further to protect consumers - such as those which provide premium
credits on a sliding scale basis to individuals and families with incomes up to 400 percent Federal Poverty Level.

I have been watch Hardball on MSNBC.
They were discussing possible republicans who would support the President's Health Care Agenda and the name George Voinovich could be one of those republicans.
Asked why the White House has not reached out to him yet. The answer was keep the presure off until the final vote.
Keep the presure on Voinovich!
Joe "You Lie" Wilson Gotta Go and 25,548+ people are showing him the door!
Be part of this remarkable grassroots effort!
It was bound to happen.
The deplorable heckling of elected officials at local Town Hall Meetings by anonymous "teabaggers" worms its way into Congress.
And this time it is even more shocking because the heckler is NOT anonymous - the heckler is a Member of the House of Representatives!!
Rep Joe Wilson (SC-02) screams out "You lie" to interrupt President Obama during his televised address to a Joint Session of Congress on health care reform.
Enough is enough! Joe Wilson's behavior is just the latest example of the destruction of civil political discourse playing out nationwide. Now is the time to hold these politicians accountable for their actions.
Joe Gotta GO !!! And more than 25,548 patriots who support President Obama have responded to show Joe the door!
As of 9 AM Sept 17, 25,548 people donated more than $941,384 to support the campaign of Rob Miller, a Democrat and Marine Corp veteran who is running against Rep Wilson in 2010.
Miller ran against Wilson in 2008 and took in 46% of the vote!!
Hey, wanna contribute to Rob Miller's 2010 campaign to oust Joe Wilson?
Here's the link. Pick a page (even the titles will bring a smile to your face) and drop a few bucks:
http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/19079
A few dollars sent to Miller’s campaign to beat Joe “You Lie” Wilson will make you feel great!!
ActBlue updates their site often, so you can even check back and see how the donations are adding up!
(Go ahead; call me a starry-eyed optimist, but I'd like to see the donations to Miller top $1 million).
NOTE: and if one "You Lie" lobbed at President Obama by Joe Wilson is not enough, here is a NEW VIDEO from remorseless Wilson that uses his disrespect for the President and how he is being attacked by liberals as a springboard to solicit funds for his campaign!

Hello All,
I’m happy to report that service events in support of the community are alive and well.
On Saturday, August 22, several local grass-root organizations collaborated on the service event, “Supplies For Change”. The donation drop-off areas were located at Shaker Square; an immensely popular location for the community. The organizers of the North Union Farmer’s Market generously donated a tent for us to receive donations in the morning. The Coral Company opened the doors of the former Obama Campaign headquarters for us to use this space in the afternoon.
In summary, cash donations exceeded $260. In addition, we collected a vast variety of useful school supplies that filled many bags and boxes. The items were donated to the Adlai Stevenson School, a K-8 school in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and the monetary donations were used by the CMSD to purchase school supplies for Audubon School on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
The organizers of this event thank everyone for their generosity and support. “Supplies For Change” may become an annual event, and we look forward to your continued interest and support.
All the best,
Maureen

WASHINGTON — A federal district judge ruled Monday that the CIA repeatedly misled him in asserting that state secrets were involved in a 15-year-old lawsuit involving allegedly illegal wiretapping.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth also ordered former CIA director George Tenet and five other CIA officials to explain their actions or face potential sanctions.
Lamberth also questioned the credibility of current CIA Director Leon Panetta, saying that Panetta's testimony in the case contained significant discrepancies, and rejected an Obama administration request that the case continue to be kept secret. He released hundreds of previously secret filings.
"The court does not give the government a high degree of deference because of its prior misrepresentations regarding the stated secrets privilege in this case," Lamberth wrote. "Although this case has been sealed since its inception to protect sensitive information, it is clear . . . that many of the issues are unclassified."
Hello Northeast Ohio Obama Volunteers,
I hope this note finds everyone well. I am reminded of how much I enjoy our Ohio summer days.
Since the First 100 Days Event held in April, many of us have directed our attention to participating in local days of service, volunteering in our communities, and finding other ways to "walk the talk". Health Care reform is on everyone's mind as it the state of the economy and unemployment in Ohio. We still have much work before us to do.
There are two very important items that I want to bring to your attention.
The first is the article written by Margaret Bernstein in the Plain Dealer on Sunday July 19. This is a six-month follow-up to the President's Inauguration with a focus on the activities of the Obama Volunteers.
Here is the link to the Margaret Bernstein article:

The second thing is that President Obama is scheduled to come to Shaker Heights on Thursday, July 23. It is listed on the www.shaker.org website:
The Shaker Heights City School District is delighted to host a Town Hall meeting with President Barack Obama on Thursday afternoon, July 23. Tickets are required and are to be allocated by lottery. Ticket requests may be made by visiting the White House website until 3:00 p.m. on July 21. Due to limited space at the event, the White House will only be able to fulfill a limited number of requests for tickets.
The link to apply for tickets (distributed by lottery) is here:

Best wishes,
Nothing better symbolizes the corruption of the debate about healthcare reform than the rhetoric about "government-run" healthcare. Or, for that matter, the related argument that we need a "uniquely American" solution which precludes a public system like Medicare for all.
Two reports that notably received scant coverage from either the media or even those advocating the public plan "option" in Congress, reveal the seldom told truth.
Medicare is a "uniquely American" solution, and it works.
As we approach the 44th birthday of Medicare July 30th, nurses, doctors, and healthcare activists will gather in Washington to celebrate its successes and lobby to extend them by expanding Medicare to cover everyone.
The rally, sponsored by the Leadership Conference for Guaranteed Healthcare, is July 30, at 1 p.m. at Upper Senate Park across from Congress. Check here for more details:
Recent surveys, from the journal Health Affairs and from the Department of Health and Human Services, offer reminders of Medicare's success.
In a May study reported in Health Affairs, Commonwealth Fund leaders found that:
compared to people with private insurance, Medicare enrollees have greater access to care, fewer problems with medical bills, and greater satisfaction with their health plans and the quality of care they receive.
By Dennis Kucinich
Dear Friends,In mid-May, in an effort to reach consensus, President Obama secured a deal with the health insurance companies to trim 1.5% of their costs each year for ten years saving a total of $2 trillion dollars, which would be reprogrammed into healthcare. Just two days after the announcement at the White House the insurance companies reneged on the deal which was designed to protect and increase their revenue at least 35% The insurance companies reneged on the deal because they refuse any restraint on increasing premiums, copays and deductibles - core to their profits. No wonder a recent USA Today poll found that only four percent of Americans trust insurance companies. This is within the margin of error, which means it is possible that NO ONE TRUSTS insurance companies.

http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2009072913/dont-tax-benefits
Americans are demanding health care reform that guarantees them quality, affordable insurance, reduces the burden of health costs on employers and individuals and provides backup coverage through a public health insurance option.
But the suggestion that we pay for these needed reforms by taxing the health benefits that millions of us get through our employers is very unpopular — Americans fear that it could undo the one part of our health care system that now works (sort of). And we worry about new tax burdens on people who have worked hard to get and keep decent health coverage. If Democrats want to avoid a serious reaction against their important reform efforts, they should heed these concerns.
You've probably seen the ads. Ominous voice-overs warn you about how health care reform "could put a bureaucrat in charge of your medical decisions, not you." A massive bulldozer with "government-run insurance plan" written on the side crushes your health care "choices." Canadians and Britons relay horror stories of their experiences dealing with health care in those nightmarish socialist dystopias. The ads are the product of a multimillion-dollar ad campaign designed to derail health care reform—especially what's been dubbed the "public option," which would set up a government-run plan to compete with private insurers. The man behind this ad blitz is the person who might be Public Option Enemy No. 1: one-time hospital executive and longtime Republican donor Richard Scott.

If you want to know what really matters in Washington, don't go to Capitol Hill for one of those hearings, or pay attention to those staged White House "town meetings." They're just for show. What really happens -- the serious business of Washington -- happens in the shadows, out of sight, off the record. Only occasionally -- and usually only because someone high up stumbles -- do we get a glimpse of just how pervasive the corruption has become.
Case in point: Katharine Weymouth, the publisher of The Washington Post -- one of the most powerful people in DC -- invited top officials from the White House, the Cabinet and Congress to her home for an intimate, off-the-record dinner to discuss health care reform with some of her reporters and editors covering the story.
But CEO's and lobbyists from the health care industry were invited, too, provided they forked over $25,000 a head -- or up to a quarter of a million if they want to sponsor a whole series of these cozy get-togethers. And what is the inducement offered? Nothing less, the invitation read, than "an exclusive opportunity to participate in the health-care reform debate among the select few who will get it done."
The invitation reminds the CEO's and lobbyists that they will be buying access to "those powerful few in business and policy making who are forwarding, legislating and reporting on the issues...
"Spirited? Yes. Confrontational? No." The invitation promises this private, intimate and off-the-record dinner is an extension "of The Washington Post brand of journalistic inquiry into the issues, a unique opportunity for stakeholders to hear and be heard."
Let that sink in. In this case, the "stakeholders" in health care reform do not include the rabble -- the folks across the country who actually need quality health care but can't afford it. If any of them showed up at the kitchen door on the night of this little soiree, the bouncer would drop kick them beyond the Beltway.
No, before you can cross the threshold to reach "the select few who will actually get it done," you must first cross the palm of some outstretched hand. The Washington Post dinner was canceled after a copy of the invite was leaked to the web site Politico.com, by a health care lobbyist, of all people. The paper said it was a misunderstanding -- the document was a draft that had been mailed out prematurely by its marketing department. There's noblesse oblige for you -- blame it on the hired help.
Evans Politics Liberal Politics, April 12, 2009, by Paul Evans
The powers that were from the Bush administration are keeping their noses firmly in midst of the media limelight. Limbaugh stated that he wants President Obama to fail, and the media is still talking about that. Dick Cheney pugnaciously declared about April 7th that President Obama's policies were making America less safe, setting off major jawboning among the talking heads. It seemed to finally be settling down, only to have Karl Rove call Vice President Biden a "Liar," as you might expect on Fox News, on April 10th. (Watch the discussion of this on Hardball on Evans Politics Videos, here.) Eugene Robinson on that Hardball show made that point that Rove is showing up all over the place, which "doesn't sound like that great an idea to me. ....Whatever he's doing he's doing a lot of it. He seems very determined to be a player, and to try to set some kind of tone and agenda for the Republican talking points machine...."
Over at the Washington Monthly on April 11, Steve Benen is making exactly the point I am making about this:
KEEP ON TALKING, KARL.... Three of the least respected, least admired figures in contemporary American politics are Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Karl Rove. If Democratic leaders had their way, these three would be up front and center as much as possible. Especially as far as the White House is concerned, the more three on the attack, the better President Obama and his team look. And wouldn't you know it, in these early months of the Obama presidency, it's working out pretty well.Limbaugh has strengthened his reputation as the de facto leader of the party; Dick Cheney is annoying Republicans by making so many public appearances and taking cheap shots at the nation's leadership; and Karl Rove is arguably an even more rabid attack dog now than he was when he helped run the White House.

And the polling numbers support the idea that having Rove, Cheney and Limbaugh lead the charge for the GOP is something Democrats can feel pretty satisfied about. At MSNBC's First Read on April 10, here, Mark Murray wrote a piece titled "GOP Deperately Seeking Mr. Popular":
We can tell you one thing about the current Karl Rove-vs.-Joe Biden spat: Democrats are loving every second of it.Why? Because -- as with Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh before him -- the public has a very sour opinion of Rove. "We're not too worried that Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, and Dick Cheney are battling it out to remain the face of the Republican Party," a Dem strategist emails First Read. "Every time Rove pops up, it just serves to remind people what they wanted to change."...snip...An August 2007 Gallup poll showed Rove's standing at 26% favorable, 44% unfavorable. Another Gallup poll early this year had Limbaugh's at 28%-45%. Per the December 2008 NBC/WSJ poll, Cheney's was 21%-58%.

I did a little more digging on the approval ratings of the Repugnant Three to see if I could find more current data. Gallop did a poll between March 27 - 29 of 2009 on favorable/unfavorable percentages. At that time Karl Rove was 21% favorable, 44% unfavorable and 35% "never heard of/no opinion" (How anyone could either not have heard of these guys or have no opinion about them is beyond me, but I guess a lot of Americans are just not that into politics.) Cheney had a 30% favorable result (and our former fearless leader, George W. Bush had advanced into the stratospheric realm at 35%, from an all-time low of 28% on at least one poll). Pollster.com for November 4-5, 2008, among likely voters, had Rush Limbaugh at 23% favorable, 51% unfavorable and 26% "neutral/no opinion." Also for Rush Limbaugh, Gallop had a poll from February 5th of 2009:
Gallop Poll - February 5, 2009Rush Limbaugh Popularity
Republican: 60% Favorable; 23% Unfavorable; 17% Other*Independent: 25% Favorable; 45% Unfavorable; 30% Other*Democrat: 6% Favorable; 63% Unfavorable; 31% Other*
Republican: 60% Favorable; 23% Unfavorable; 17% Other*
Independent: 25% Favorable; 45% Unfavorable; 30% Other*
Democrat: 6% Favorable; 63% Unfavorable; 31% Other*
* Other = "Never heard of/No opinion"
So long as no clear popular leader of the GOP emerges, Democrats are perfectly comfortable with letting Rove, Cheney and Limbaugh thrust their immense egos into the spotlight. We don't even really have a preference: let the three of them vie for face time, it's all good. The Repugnant Three, hated as they were during the painful eight years of George W. Bush, are good news these days for the Obama administration.

Hello everyone. The election and honeymoon period are over. Now the work begins. Everything up to this point was done in order to place us in the position we are now! Barack Obama is the new president and has already began to implement his agenda. That is the nuts and bolts of it. We have to implement change in our states, counties, and cities. Emotions run high for a time, but it seems to wane at its most critical juncture. We are in a position to make real changes. We can't use the excuse, "I'm only one person" anymore. The internet age is allowing us to mobilize massive numbers of people for the good of governmental policy. So, if you are tired of the way your local or city government is running, then jump on the bandwagon and roll up your sleeves. I will cite just one example. In Cleveland, councilman Matt Zone introduced legislation to enact an "Idle Reduction Ordinance". While this may in theory be good for the environment, in practice it will likely prove impossible. Why? One, the sheer number of vehicles in Cleveland. Two, I can't imagine a policeman being able to respond to every idling vehicle. What about the big city buses that idle in traffic or any other black smog producing diesel. The vast majority of idling vehicles are in traffic anyway not idling in front of the grocery store or library. Furthermore, this measure once again is punitive toward citizens. How about looking into a light rail system? Let's go to the source of the emissions and find a way to reduce it!
Please come to http://my.barackobama.com/page/group/OhioCAN and sign up. Individuals and groups statewide. The information below is provided by CAN co-founder and CaliforniaCAN administrator Paul Currier. It outlines the formation, rules, and composition of CAN from the National to the county level in each state.
1.) Welcome to your Community Action Network: Rules of the Virtual Highway:http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/paulcurrier/gGxLPyThis link is critical for you to understand. The Founding San Francisco California Group agreed to these terms without descent. These are what we ask all who join us to agree too. We hold our selves to a higher set of standards - to elevate America. Please take the time (1.5 hours) to view Barack Obama on Empathy. If you have not been to Camp Obama, get 6 to 12 of your friends together and work thru Camp Obama with Marshall Ganz. Your own private Camp Obama is your experience. This will take two days at 6 hours per day. Think of this as "Team Building".
2.) Organize America - Our 50 State Main MyBO Groupshttp://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/paulcurrier/gGxHP8This link has a ""Link List" to easily find all other State Groups. In time, those States will follow California's example, and build out there own County (Parish, Census District, and Boroughs) L ink List's, and post these on their main MyBO Page for easy access to all 3,071 Counties, 4 Independent Cities, and Territorial Region.
And Welcome to America - Washington DC! We don't want to forget that DC is in the House ! ! ! This only took a couple of hundred years !
3.) Our 58 County List of California.CAN Groupshttp://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/paulcurrier/gGxFtzThis is a Link List of all Counties in the Golden State of Sunny California! When your State Administrators of your State.CAN network recruit enough members, Chicago HQ will open up your state for County.State.CAN Group formation. As 3 Admins are needed per County - that means over 9,000 Local Admins are necessary to operate the CAN as designed. Each of you can recruit 10 to your first meetings on March 7th 2009, and we will have created a National Group of 10,000 members who want to work for Change together. If your in one of the California Counties - host your meeting and lets continue to lead the Nation. The other States are catching up!
4.) Community Action Network (the CAN in Yes We CAN!!!)http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/paulcurrier/gGxtYCThe November 21st, 2008 post for our Founding Assembly. 13 Attended. We had several California Counties represented: Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, and El Dorado. All present were and are shameless Obamaniacs - Obamericans - Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Greens and so forth. I put this in for history only. November 8th 2008, three Camp Obama Graduates decided to form the Community Action Network. We want to thank some people now. Thank you Martin Luther King. Thank you Cesar Chavez. Thank you Robert Kennedy. Thank you Marshall Ganz. Thank you Buffy Wicks. Thank you to every other community organizer who gave their contribution to us all, and thank you to everyone with the courage to just try and take a chance on humanity. We can change the world. Yes We CAN !
5.) Final Monthly Meeting Format for all CAN Groupshttp://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/paulcurrier/gGxtvFThe Format we voted to suggest is simple. Reports from Officers and Committees are to be brief. Old business comes next to allow voting on what we already deliberated on and caucused on for at least 30 days. Reasonable works. New Business is non votable. This process allows New Business to become Old Business at the next meeting. There is no rust really. We are here for the duration of our political lives together, so lets act adult. Housekeeping Motions are simple for each group. Substantial Unanimity - is Chairpersons Rules - not Robert's Rules (50% plus one). The goal of substantial unanimity is 100% (Altogether Now). 2/3 to 3/4 means a group holds together. Less than substantial unanimity means i ts a good idea to table until next month. These are ideas. Your free to do as you like.
6.) Final Two Year CAN Schedule: all County, State Assembly, and National Congress Eventshttp://my.barackobama.com/pag e/community/post/paulcurrier/gGxzKsThis initial two year schedule was voted on and agreed to propose to all following CAN groups to adopt so we can act in coordination. The State and National Groups will probably vote on our annual schedules forward as a group.
