Support is growing for Obama in Australia. Australians are sick of war mongers, they want a real leader like Obama. Someone who will take charge but in a more passive role.
A compassionate leader.

Nearly 100 African American precinct leaders and captains enjoyed some great Ice House food and music from Rachel Jackson, a back-up singer with The Spinners, and Primrose Martin, a 15 year-old music prodigy. The snap-your-fingers jazz music got the audience pumped up and the speeches brought the house down. The cheers and Obama chants were heard all the way downstairs in the club, and some curious onlookers made their way up to join our celebration.
We are all pumped up here at Obama headquarters, because the African Americans for Obama constituency group has been officially kicked off and there is visible excitement for change in our community. This group will only grow larger as our members utilize the grassroots organizing techniques that have been learned from our fantastic steering committee members and field organizers.
Michael Strautmanis continued to rally the crowd with his inspirational life story, and he emphasized the power of our movement; what he called “the Joshua generation.” He passionately stressed that we have inherited from the “Moses generation” and that Barack Obama is the leader to make sure we get to where we need to go.
As everyone left for home, you could see the visible excitement in their eyes, some even moist with tears, that African Americans in Las Vegas were starting a community that will be growing stronger every day, and that their movement won’t end with the caucus in January. These leaders will be shaping Nevada politics for many years, and Barack Obama was the leader that brought them all together.
It’s clear that their dedication is unmatched, and their work is a representation of that commitment. African Americans for Obama in Nevada are fired up ready for change! And they are going to make sure that they are the leaders who make it happen.

Chapters of Students for Barack Obama are forming in high schools and colleges all across the country. Students here in Nevada are eager to organize and spread the word about Barack. The University of Nevada, Reno has been featured on the Nevada blog before and has a fantastic grassroots presence on campus. Their bretheren and sisters in the south are organizing the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Sara Arthrell, president of Students for Barack Obama at UNLV, spoke with me for a few minutes after a meeting the group held in the Student Union. Check out some of our interview below:

Tuesday night in Las Vegas African Americans for Obama held their second leadership meeting at the North Las Vegas office. The participants were graced with the grassroots experience of Michael Strautmanis, a senior advisor at Obama for America.
Listen to this inspirational story from Mr. Strautmanis on how he developed a relationship with the Obama family:
The leadership meeting lived up to the high standards set by the previous hosts, Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson and Senator Steven Horsford, while several new members were brought up to speed on the group’s outreach efforts and their work with African American leaders all across the state.
One of the members of the leadership committee is Alice Key, a 95 year old community activist, who created the Las Vegas chapter of the NAACP and was the executive director for several years. She spent a decade as deputy labor commissioner for the State of Nevada, appointed by Governor Richard Bryan in 1983.
Alice started her community activism while working as a journalist for the The Los Angeles Tribune in 1943, Alice discovered, during a visit to Fort Huachuca in Arizona, that the blood plasma of black soldiers was indeed separated from that of whites. In 1954, Alice moved to Las Vegas to work for the Las Vegas Voice, owned by a long-time acquaintance, Dr. Charles I. West (who helped to end segregation on the strip in 1960). Simultaneously, she started the first black television show, Talk of the Town.
Mrs. Key has been a vocal activist for African American issues her whole life, and has been known to proudly state, “I voted for FDR… the first time!”
Mrs. Key’s catchphrase is especially funny within our leadership group because one of our precinct captains is named Roosevelt and he has over 40 years of political experience. They are both great admirers of our 32nd president and work tirelessly to honor his legacy.
The work of the African American Leadership committee is reaching out to their extensive contacts all across the state as they grow their grassroots organization and build support for Senator Obama. The passion from this group is contagious, and we have no doubt that their work will continue to grow our organization all across Nevada.
