Today is the Day!

First I wanted to say a very heartfelt and grateful “Thank You!!!!!” to all of you for agreeing to help in various parts of my "Dr Esam Omeish 2009 campaign"! So many of you are returning veterans from Obama, Connelly and Moran campaign that I feel as if the Esam and I are “in great hands”!

I know that all of our lives are extremely busy, but we need you to try to squeeze in few volunteer date for you the next week and half.

We need as many members of our community to talk to our own community families that live in our district before the end of next week and before early voting ends. Reaching these folks is essential to us winning on June 9th. Can I count on you to do that for Esam and the community?

Good New for Sunday's Event

In addition to a speaker from Traveler's Aid at Dulles airport to help us develop our thinking on changing the experience of foreigners entering the United States, an officer from USIP (United States Institute of Peace) will attend our meeting on Sunday to talk to us about future collaboration. We will also announce later today a specific joint meeting with USIP in June on the Somali pirate crisis; but Mary Hope Schwoebel, will be with us on Sunday to discuss projects beyond the June effort, Please bring something to drink to the event on Sunday. Feel free to bring food as well. We will have the grill going, so if you want something in particular to be grilled, we will be happy to grill it.

Call it a sign of the times. Despite his stellar record in the community as both a physician and activist for the needy, there is a vocal minority with extreme views in the blogosphere and media who want to distort and tarnish the good name of Dr. Esam Omeish. Read below a few direct comments made by a variety of well-respected community leaders and professionals about Dr. Esam Omeish as they defend his character:

Virginia's Governor Tim Kaine: "Dr. Omeish is a respected physician and community leader."

Father Jerry Creeden, : "Words of support from the Faith community, the Commonwealth (of Virginia) is for all of us."

Rabbi J. Moline: "I am sorry that the juggernaut of prejudice" "I would welcome your defense. This is an extended hand from my community, let us do something together."

Vienna Physician Kicks Off Campaign Dr. Esam Omeish pledges support for health care, transportation and education.

Dr. Esam Omeish is running in the 35th District Democratic primary on June 9, and on Saturday, he kicked off his campaign in a room crowded with cheering supporters. A practicing physician and Chief of General Surgery at Inova Alexandria Hospital, Omeish promises to advocate for affordable quality health care in the General Assembly in Richmond.

"I love Virginia and I’ve been involved in community activities since I came here. My candidacy is a continuation of a lifelong passion for public and community service.

"As a physician and health care provider, I think this year health care is going to be one of the major issues we bring to the General Assembly."

Omeish, of Vienna, came to the U.S. from Tripoli, Libya, as a youngster in 1982. He graduated from Jeb Stuart High School and received his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University, majoring in biology and government. He received his medical degree from Georgetown, as well. He is married to Dr. Badria Kafala and is the father of four children.

"His mother is my friend," said Riaza Ahmed of Vienna. "All our children go to the same school. Dr. Omeish grew up here so he knows what we need."

Beyond health care issues, Omeish said he is committed to continuing the region’s excellence in education, finding sustainable transportation solutions and supporting small business and job creation.

"He’s a very logical person," said Matthew Kavosi, Vienna resident and Omeish supporter. "He’s a very patriotic American who speaks the people’s language. What he says he really means."

Mukit Hossain, president of the Virginian Muslim Political Action Committee, said that, of the more-than 5,000 surgeries Omeish has performed, many of those were done at no charge to the patient. "He [Omeish] serves people in need whether they can afford it or not."

Supervisor John Foust (D-Dranesville), Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova (D-At-large) and the State Sen. George Barker (D-39) stopped by to congratulate Omeish on his candidacy.

"Quite frankly, I’ve found the General Assembly to be somewhat limited by its partisan politics," Omeish said. "I think the Assembly is in need of independent, strong and fresh voices to transcend partisanship."

Omeish Campaign Kick-Off Huge Success!

Dr. Esam Omeish had a full house for his Campaign Kickoff Party at the Vienna Firehouse this past Saturday. The party was the official start of Dr. Esam Omeish's race for Virginia's 35th District Delegate. Over 250 supporters came and listened to Dr. Esam Omeish speak about issues like healthcare, education, and the economy.

"This is an exciting time to be engaged in politics" said Dr. Omeish. Speaking about his experience as a Physician and one of the only Surgeons in Va that has a clinic that provides free surgeries to the uninsured and under insured. Dr. Omeish went on to say that "First, I am a physician, an advocate of health care and a staunch supporter of the right of all Americans and all Virginians to have accessible, affordable, quality health care. This year is the year for serious health care reform and I want to be part of that change"

Special political guests who came to congratulate Dr. Esam Omeish included Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Sharon Bulova, State Senator of VA 39th District George Barker, Drainesville District Board of Supervisors John Foust, and Maryland State Delegate Saqib Ali.

Due to recent events, the next meeting on Sunday April 26th will now focus almost entirely on the Somali Pirate Situation, with a view to examining solutions, political and otherwise. Is there a Doctor in the House?

During these hard times, many Americans have realized just how critical solving our nation's health care crisis has become. Closer to home, thousands of Virginians and their families have lost their employer-provided health care and are living on the bubble, hoping a medical disaster does not strike their household.

Currently, we have no Democratic doctors in Virginia's House of Delegates. As the Chief of General Surgery at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, I have the expertise and perspective Virginia's legislature needs when considering health care policy. I have personally witnessed the disastrous effects this latest economic downturn has had on Virginia's patients. I am committed to providing the best health care possible for both insured and uninsured patients alike. As chairman of a local free medical clinic, we provided free clinical and surgical healthcare to uninsured patients who would otherwise have to go without the necessary medical services. I continue to serve through "Project Access", a program which connects uninsured patients with doctors who will provide them necessary care.

Our campaign for Delegate in Virginia's 35th District is an extension of my life's work to help people. My perspective as a practicing surgeon and my involvement in the community will enable me to give better direction for Virginia's General Assembly to consider policies beneficial to the health and well-being of Virginia's citizens. It is imperative that every Virginian has adequate preventative health care regardless of their circumstances.

With your help, I will be the only Democratic "Doctor in the House"

Possible White House Demonstration in Favor of Obama

I'd like to explore the you the idea of mounting a pro-Stimulus Package Demonstration as a way of showing support for our President. This would be on the Elipse on saturday the 14th of February. We will need a permit from the Park Service; but first I'd like to know that folks are interested. We could stage a planning committee here at my house in Virginia during the week and then do the demonstration.

The Alex Commercial

I guess the feedback from Move.org's "Alex" commercial was mixed but I see it as a sign if things to come. Personally, I thought that the add was very telling and probably hit a nerve with a lot of people because are reminded that John McCain has no interest in getting us out of Iraq.
What this ad really shows is that Democrats learned that the attacks against John Kerry worked and we have to fight fire with fire. I am actually very curious to see what is going to happen when closer to the election when the battles between the 527 groups really go all out!!!

I like how the Republicans are grilling Scot McClellan but don't they understand that he withstood artillery like questioning everyday concerning the worst President in our history? He is cool, calm and collective, nothing is going to be taken out of context because he is that good. Every statement he says is exactly what he means! I wish I could be that good a communicator! Of course I didn't feel this way when he was protecting the President.

Al Gore hits the nail on the head!

I caught the speech last night and a quick comment I wanted to make was how different our Supreme Court would be today if the 2000 election was different. We have caught some breaks recently but if John McCain is elected you can say goodbye to legalized abortions and hello to brutal back alley abortions. If we continue to show the women voters who see John McCain as a "Maverick" on issues is actually a clone of Bush and the ultra right-wing in regards to women's issues I think those undecided women voters will come around in November.

Good news from "toss up " Virginia

I just ran across a blog from "Raising Kaine" which is a good, solid progressive blog from Virginia that cited a Rasmussen Report Poll from Virginia that indicated that Obama is continually gaining from in Virginia. Here is the link!

Another link at the bottom of the webpage is showing that Senate candidate Mark Warner, is CRUSHING his opponent former Governor Jim Gilmore by nearly 30 points. Considering that Warner just finished up the Virginia delegate convention this weekend and showed strong support for Barack Obama I think things are looking good and only getting better. I'm beginning to this that Virginia is looking better and better and having a former Governor-turned Senate candidate on the ballot is only going to help get the Democratic votes out!!!

In response to the numerous lies, distortions and other things spread about Barack Obama over the last year he has responded with a website titled www.fightthesmears.com. Obviously, it has to be done since we learned in 2004 that not aggressively attacking the smears, lies and distortions usually hinder the candidate who they are against. This here is a website, along with www.barackobama.com can really show what type of candidate Obama is.

Lastly, to be honest I've seen a lot of the stupid e-mails that have been put out and even some of the things that I have seen on this website are amazing. But, what is even more amazing is that I run into people who actually believe them!!!

A risk?

Last night on Olbermann the new polls came out showing a solid bump for Barack, not too bad. I am curious as to why these articles are still popping up from "The Hill.com" titled: "Hispanic Dems warn Obama he risks losing Latinos." Of course I found it linked through a right-wing website but as I read through it I did start pondering.

Clearly, the Hispanic votes was largely behind Hillary Clinton throughout the primary seasson, I don't think anyone can deny that. The polls last night showed that Hispanics were beginning to move towards Barack but given the fact that John McCain has been a pretty favorable politician towards issues related to immigration could this article be of some truth? Would the Democats/Independent Hispanics actually go towards McCain?

Something I'm pondering!

Red to Blue

I like many other people are in the same boat. We were raised as republicans, and for the most part were satisfied with the results... until recently. The steady decline of the state of this country has been one of frustration and anger towards our elected officials in whom we placed the trust of our dearest asset... our country. 5-6 months ago, I started to look at my options, and found a ray of hope in Barack. He proposes changes which I felt would put our country back on the right course, and the more I listened to him, the more I became inspired.

In the past, I have to admit that I have been very passive in discussing and participating in the political process. Obama has changed this... I eagerly await press releases, debates, and other events that have helped me solidify my trust in him more and more. I have even attended my first rally yesterday at Nissan Pavilion which blew me away... this man is very inspirational!! I have also for the first time in my life willingly donated monetarily to a political cause. Obama has my hope, and I have been spreading the word, and have been enjoying conversations with other "converted" republicans.

In the coming months, I plan on enjoying the political process with new vigor and the hope for a better future for our country.

Running Mates...

Thinking about potential running mates for Barack with sufficient standing and gravitas to bring strength and value to the ticket...

What about Senator George Mitchell? He's got great name recognition, has been senate majority leader, has led blue ribbon commissions in international affairs...

I think that Senator Mitchell would offer a great deal to the ticket and the country. What are your thoughts?
