One America Celebration: Mobilizing National Service

On Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th, Empowerment Partners is sponsoring the "One America Celebration: Mobilizing National Service" weekend. The weekend program includes a Welcome Reception at Fernbank Museum, National Panel Discussion on Healthcare Reform at Emory University; Community Service projects/Food Drive; Celebrity Golf Tournament at Cherokee Run Golf Club and conclude with "One America Red Carpet and Awards Gala" where we are saluting community leaders such as: Juanita Baranco, COO of Mercedes of Buckhead; Elizabeth Omilami, CEO of Hosea Feed the Hungry and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Medical Correspondent. The goal of "One America Celebration" is to educate, empower and increase understanding of public policy issues that impact our communities.

My Inaugural Day

My Inaugural Day I was there! I drove up a few days before to beat the crowds and get myself acclimatized to the DC cold. Things seemed pretty calm until Monday. ( I was not sufficently arctic blast-proof to brave the weather for the Sunday opening concert).

My inaugural experience was hiked up a notch on the day before the actual inauguration, however, when I decided to make a trip of reconnaissance to the Mall and the Capitol to scout out the terrain and map out a master plan for the next day. I also had the presence of mind to secure newspapers with last minute maps and instructions about street closings, what to bring and not bring etc. I knew that I had to get photos of the Capitol and the staging area then because with aninvitatin, but no ticket, I would not stand a snowball's chance in hell to get within shouting distance of the presidential party on the following day. I used that day, too, to secure my Metro smart card as well as my Inaugural paraphernalia (largely for the sake of posterity) like any red-blooded historian would. I discovered I could combine the need for warmth with the desire to capture pieces of history for history. It was a vendor's paradise, trust me! Every soi-disant itinerant retailer and his or her momma from every imaginable corner of the USA was out there peddling a hustle, complete with accompanying jingle, for example, "Target sold out, but I didn't!" Every conceivable assortment of trinket on sale was emblazoned with something pertaining to the President-elect, the First Lady to-be, the beautifully well-behaved kids and bearing the date 01-20-09. Even if all you ever wanted was to get a photo of yourself with your arm carelessly flung across the shoulder of the President-elect, you could pose with a cardboard cut-out for a fee. It was a time to meet new people and ask the well-worn question, "Where are you from?" and receive responses geographically splayed across the globe. By the time I returned home, given the degree of feeling ( or lack thereof) in my fingers and toes, I knew inaugural day, which was expected to be colder, would be no picnic. Nothing short of death and serious disease was going to stop me from showing up, however.

So, I was up before the alarm the following morning. Well prepared with toe and hand warmers, three pairs of socks, two pairs of gloves, thermal underwear, Obama adornments and essentials to stave off port-a-potty blues, I sallied forth like an ancient warrior prepared to do battle with nature and the elements. A common air of unbridled excitement bonded strangers together as we rode the Metro packed in like sardines. After walking several blocks with waves of fellow celebrants, I entered the Mall at the westernmost end and immediately sought a good viewing vantage point. With wind chill considered it was 17F or about -8C and I was out there on the mall for 8 hours,dancing constantly to keep hypothermia of the extremities at bay. Beastly penguin and polar bear temperatures!!! But who cared?

I positioned myself directly under a Jumbotron although all the way down by the Washington Memorial. Oblivious of the thousands left out after they closed the Mall gates, or the tens of thousands who were there but too far from vantage points to either see or hear anything, I witnessed the whole sheebang from the first abeng call clearly on that Jumbotron and was immersed in the excitement of the 2 million plus on the mall --the exhilaration, the tears, the joy, the laughter, the pride, the camaraderie . . .. I left tired and cold but happy. Being there, I was able to experience some of the things that the TV cameras could not pick up -- the people handing out pink slips for Bush, those distributing 'Arrest Bush' cards complete with website urls, the ones giving out free 'Snacks for Change,' those who brought groups of school children from places like Selma, Alabama, the man dressed in the Bill Clinton mask bearing the sign "Make Out Not War,' the boos for George W, his momma and his poppa (Only in America! LOL), the tears from eyes grown dim and faces wizened with age who had lived through the time when there was white water and black water and lived to tell the tale, those who brought their generations to catch a glimpse of history being turned on its head. There were those who rode in, drove in, flew in or weren't even sure how they got here or were getting back and didn't care.

I witnessed history!

Too cold to stay on, I returned home to watch the parade on TV. I could now rest at ease, or even die happy now that the world was turned upside down.

The Realization of A New World

I think we all realized when PA was confirmed blue that the race was over. My siblings and I shouted with glee long before the West Coast polls closed and it was over. We chattered and laughed and watched return after return be announced. Once the election was called for Barack Obama our chatter stopped and the room became quiet. We didn't jump up out of our seats and scream as we watched the crowds on tv cheering. It was a very surreal moment for us. We expected him to win, but when he did all we could think about was how the world changed in an instant and the weight that was now laid upon Obama's shoulders. My brother was the first to speak and he said "I hope his winning not only changes the way that people view black people in general, but also the way that black people view themselves." Then we realized that my mother had been watching from her room and wondered if she had fallen asleep or was awake and knew. We went to check on her.

My mother was awake and crying, I didn't think she was ever going to stop. It was in that moment that I realized what a huge psychological impact this election had on my parents and the generation before them. My father was born in 1949, my mother in 1950. They were teenagers during the height of the Civil Rights movement, but watched it from two different worlds. My father grew up on a farm in a small North Carolina town where the school system was segregated. His entire K-12 school experience was in the "black only" schools, as well as his college experience at North Carolina A&T. My mother was from the north. Throughout her school experience she attended both black and intergrated schools. I did not realize until election night that while all along I never doubted that Obama would win, they were hoping and praying he would win. It never seemed out of reach to me, but for them it was a wishful dream. I have always gone to intergrated schools, lived in intergrated neighborhoods, had intergrated friendships and intergrated relationships. Therein lies the generational gap.

As we listened to Obama's speech I turned to my sister and said "I feel as if I should feel the way those people felt as they listened to Martin Luther King deliver his I Have a Dream Speech," to my surprise she said she felt as if she should feel the same way also. It was a strange night for my siblings and I. One of my sister's looked at us and said "A black man and a black woman are now the most powerful people in the free world." We just sat there and stared at each other in quiet. When Obama's speech was over I drove myself and my daughter home and went to bed.

I was still in that quiet mood when I woke up on yesterday. It was an odd reality and I was unsure of what to do. I felt as if I were walking around in a zombie like emotionless daze. As I walked into the office building people were smiling and excited and I felt nothing. It was not until an hour or so later when I pulled up the electoral map and saw all those new blue states that some inkling of reality came flowing in. I got chills as I thought to myself "He really did it, he really did it." I did find myself wondering as I ran errands during lunch what was going through everyones minds. It seemed like a lifetime ago when the campaign started and now it was official, we won. It was no longer a theory, it was reality. I was in awe of his accomplishment, but the day went on as usual.

This morning on the way to work one of the local Atlanta radio stations replayed the latter portion of President Elect Barack Obama's speech. From the part about the 106 year old Atlanta woman on forward. That's when it happened. My eyes filled up with tears, I had chills and I felt my body trembling...it's the same way I get every year when I hear that first playing of the I Have A Dream Speech. Reality set in for me today and my world has changed forever. My daughter will always know that anything is possible. At 10 years old she does not understand how the dynamics of this country changed or how the world view of this country changed on November 4, 2008. America, we grew up.

Store Closings and Layoffs

Dear Friends,

The McCain camp is getting ready to try to attack Barack Obama's character. They have nothing else and can feel this election slipping away from them. Let's pray that America is not fooled by such tactics.

If you have not read, The AUDACITY of HOPE, by Barack Obama, please get a copy now. One of the first things I noticed before I read any of his books, was that it appeared to me for the first time that a politician had values, integrity and morals. He is not perfect, but he holds himself accountable to the responsibility of Values and what it means. That meant so much to me. It was a breath of fresh air. I immediately signed on because I knew he had character that was evident and I promised to do anything I could to support him. I knew I could live with how he approached issues because his value system was important to him and he lived his life accordingly. I have picked out a few lines from his book so you may better understand what I am talking about. An excerpt from his book:

"I often wonder what makes it so difficult for politicians to talk about values in ways that don't appear calculated or phony. There is the fact that the practice of modern politics itself seems to be value free. Politics not only allows but often rewards behavior that we would normally think of as scandalous: fabricating stories, distorting the obvious meaning of what other people say; insulting or generally questioning their motives, poking through their personal affairs in search of damaging information. The gap between what we deem appropriate behavior in everyday life and what it takes to win a campaign is just one of the ways in which a politicians values are tested. If we aren't willing to pay a price for our values, if we aren't willing to make some sacrifices in order to realize them, then we should ask ourselves whether we truly believe in them at all. We say we value the legacy we leave the next generation and then saddle that generation with mountains of debt. We say we believe in equal opportunity but then stand idle while millions of American children languish in poverty. We insist that we value family, but then structure or economy and organize our lives so as to ensure that our families get less and less of our time. We can make claims on their behalf, so long as we understand that our values must be tested against fact and experience, so long as we recall that they must demand deeds and not just words. To do otherwise would be to relinquish our best selves."

Listen, we need to know as people what is important to us. Do we want a leader that is willing to do anything to win a campaign? Or do we want somebody that can lead this nation to the moral, ethical and respectful standing we should be? Character counts, How can we get anybody to follow our lead if we don't have any?

Ann Taylor closing 117 stores nationwide A company spokeswoman said the company hasn't revealed which stores will be shuttered. It will let the stores that will close this fiscal year know over the next month

Eddie Bauer to close more stores
Eddie Bauer has already closed 27 shops in the first quarter and plans to close up to two more outlet st ores by the end of the year.

Cache closing stores
Women's retailer Cache announced that it is closing 20 to 23 stores this year.

Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherines closing 150 stores nationwide The owner of retailers Lane Bryant , Fashion Bug , Catherines Plus Sizes will close about 150 underperforming stores this year.
The company hasn't provided a list of specific store closures and can't say when it will offer that info, spokeswoman Brooke Perry said today.

Talbots, J. Jill closing stores
About a month ago, Talbots announced that it will be shuttering all 78 of its kids and men's stores. Now the company says it will close another 22underperforming stores.. The 22 stores will be a mix of Talbots women's and J. Jill , another chain it owns. The closures will occur this fiscal year, according to a company press release.

Gap Inc. closing 85 stores
In addition to its namesake chain, Gap also owns Old Navy and BananaRepublic . The company said the closures - all planned for fiscal 2008 - will be weighted toward the Gap brand.

Foot Locker to close 140 stores
In the company press release and during its conference call with analysts today, it did no t specify where the future store closures - all plan ned in fiscal 2008 - will be. The company could n ot be immediately reached for comment

Wickes is going out of business
Wickes Furniture is going out of business and closing all of its stores, Wickes, a 37-year-old retailer that targets middle-income customers, filed for bankruptcy protection last month.

Goodbye Levitz / BOMBAY - closed already
The furniture retailer, which is going out of business. Levitz first announced it was going out of business and closing all 76 o f its stores in December. The retailer dat es back to 1910 when Richard Levitz opened his first furniture store in Lebanon, PA. In the 1960s, the warehouse/showroom concept brought Levitz to the forefront of the furniture industry. The local Levitz closures will follow the shutdown of Bombay.

Zales, Piercing Pagoda closing stores
The owner of Zales and Piercing Pagoda previously said it plans to close 82st ores by July 31. Today, it announced that it is closing another 23underperforming stores. The company said it's n ot pro viding a list of specific store closures. Of the 105 locations planned for closure, 50 are kiosks and 55 are stores.

Disney Store owner has the right to close 98 stores The Walt Disney Company announced it acquired about 220 Disney Stores from subsidiaries of The Children's Place Retail Stores. The exact number of stores acquired will depend on negotiations with landlords. Those subsidiaries of Children's Place filed for bankruptcy protection in late March. Walt Disney in the news release said it has also obtained the
right to close about 98 Disney Stor es in the U.S. The press release didn't list those stores.

Home Depot store closings (E. Brunswick, Rt 18 just put up their closing sign)
ATLANTA - Nearly 7+ months after its chief executive said there were noplans to cut the number of its c ore retail stores, The Home Depot Inc.announced Thursday that it is shuttering 15 of them amid a slumping U.S.economy and housing market. The move will affect 1,300 employees. It is the first time the world's largest home improvement store chain has ever closed a flagship store for performance reasons. Its shares rose almost 5 percent.The Atlanta-based company said the underperforming U.S.stores being closed represent less than 1 percent of its existing sto res. They will be shuttered within the next two months.

CompUSA (CLOSED) clarifies details on store closings Any extended warranties purchased for products through CompUSA will be honored by a third-party provider, Assurant Solutions. Gift cards, rain checks, and rebates purchased prior to December 12 can be rede emed at any time during the final sale. For those wh o have a gadget currently in for service with CompUSA, the repair < FONT face=Arial size=3>will be completed and the gadget will be returned to owners.

Sprint Nextel - 125 retail locations New Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse appears to have inherited a company bleeding subsc ribers by the thousands, and will now officially be dropping the ax on
4,000 e mployees and 125 retail locations. Amid the loss of 639,000 postpaidcustomers in the fourth quarter, Sprint will be cutting a total of 6.7% of its work force (following the 5,000 layoffs last year) and 8% of company-owned brick-and-mortar stores, while remaining mute on other rumors that it will consolidate its headquarters in Kansas . Sprint Nextel shares are down $2.89, or nearly 25%, at the time of this writing.

J. C. Penney, Lowe's and Office Depot are scaling back

Ethan Allen Interiors: The company announced plans to close 12 of 300+
stores in an effort to cut costs.

Wilsons the Leather Experts - 158 stores

Pacific Sunwear will close its 154 Demo stores after a review of strategicalternatives for the urban-apparel brand. Seventy-four underperforming Demo stores closed last May.

Sharper Image: The company recently filed for bankruptcy protection and an nounced that 90 of its 184 stores are closing. The retailer will still operat e 94 stores to pay off debts, but 90 of these stores have performed poorly and also may close.

Bombay Company: (Freehold Mall store closed) The company unveiled plans to close all 384 U.S.-based Bombay Company stores. The company's online storefront has discontinued operations.

Dillard's to Close More Stores
Dillard's Inc. said it will continue to focus on closing underperforming stores, reducing expenses and improving its merchandise in 2008. At the company's annual shareholder meeting, CEO William Dillard II said the company will close another six underperforming stores this year.

F.O.C.U.S, we will Find, Our, Candidate, Under, Scrutiny during the last 50 days of this campaign. It's not rocket science and it's not relevant. As voters we must keep F.O.C.U.S.E.D, Find, Other, Challenges, United, States, Educate, & Deliver on the promises. I took a moment to think and...if either Obama or McCain past away , and as tragic as that would be either way, who would I desire to be second in command? Sen. Biden or Gov. Palin? To me the choice is clear but maybe undecided voters in either party haven't considered this lately. Lots of pundit talk out there...think about it.

She is a senior who truly represents the type of strong, youthful spirit demonstrated by King David against Goliath--the type of spirit needed to win this most important election in American history.

It is the True American, no matter what color, age, political party,ethnicity or religion, who will help bring this Great Terror of Domestic Neglect down to its knees. All courageous Americans must take off their heavy armor of fear,racism,apathy,naivete,hop elessness and jealously to find that One Smooth Stone of Effective Change and aim it right at the voting booth on November 4th for Barack Obama.

Barack has asked us to believe in our ability to bring change to Washington. We do believe. We must also demonstrate the wisdom and calling of a mighty faith in a mighty nation and talk back to this Goliath like Bunny does, even after 85 years, and aim every fiber in our bodies toward bringing this giant of hate down.

We're beginning to see the true size of America's greatest enemy as the McCain/Palin campaign huffs and puffs and insults the calling of Barach Obama. Palin exposed her disdain for the sanctity of his honesty and brilliance when she inferred that Barach thought too highly of himself to the point of believing he could accomplish miracles in service to the people of America if he wins this election. Once the press covers this battle objectively, Palin and McCain will be exposed before all the world for their stand on the issues alone.

McCain and Palin have called out their giant to battle Obama and his supporters. This is the Giant in Our Land that has kept Americans so fearful and unproductive for 8 years--Hate.

Opening A Volunteer Office

Hello Supporters, The United for Barack Obama Team is opening a volunteer office. The ObamaBiden campaign needs our help. The office is opening daily from 10:00 am. to 9pm starting Monday, August 25th. Location: 5000 Snapfinger Woods Drive, Suite C 220, Decatur, GA 30035. All volunteers are asked to bring their cell phone and a positive attitude. We have phone lists of people that need to be contacted and we have a sign up sheet for canvassing the neighborhood. I would like to formally introduce myself. My name is Jennifer Gordon and I am delighted to serve you and your community as Field Organizer for the Campaign For Change organization. I am specifically here during this General Election season to provide guidance and administration to many of the activities that we have planned to promote voter registrations, effective community leadership, and begin the quest of builder stronger relationships between Rockdale’s illustrious neighborhoods. We will build teams that WORK, and I assure you that you will not soon forget the greatness you all possess. Proof of this plan already exists in that we kicked off the most amazing House Party in Rockdale county and Mr. Frank D’Andrade’s home on Saturday, August 10th. Rockdale County citizens from a diversity of cultures, economic backgrounds, and some of the most talented networking that I’ve seen within this state to date, everyone was FIRED UP & READY TO GO!! Into this Presidential election with sleeves rolled up and the attitude of YES WE CAN!! So without further adieu, I would like to invite all Rockdale County citizens, city & county officials out for an amazing meeting called America’s Town Hall. This event is located in Downtown Decatur, however, you have an opportunity to receive National attention for the constituency issues that concern you. One of the most important tasks that you all can help me with is attending our Unite For Change Volunteer Leadership Training which we are preparing for on Friday, August 15th (5pm-9pm) and August 16th (9am-9pm) at Abundant Life Church on 6440 Rock Springs Road, Lithonia, GA 30038.

By attending this very important training you will receive the details you need to participate in this historical election. We have volunteer leadership opportunities available for ALL ROCKDALE COUNTY CITIZENS. We need you all to show up in great numbers so that we can bridge the gap between our current administration and the one we are building, one brick at a time. Dear Senator McCain,

I would like to thank you for running that attack ad against Obama. You have angered a lot of youth in this country. But at the same time, you gave him more exposure by comparing him to 2 celebrities. Obama is getting the star treatment. There is a reason for that, Mr. McCain. Who's the next celebrity on the block you want to compare Obama with? Thanks to your silly attack ad, we have even more youth now participating in Obama's campaign. We gained another 30% of youth volunteers here in our Atlanta office. Thanks McCain! Now that's something to smile about!!! :)

Well, here we go again. Just when you think the two presidential candidates were going to have a clean campaign, McCain goes in his bag of tricks and run an attack on Obama. I could understand McCain if he was just running an ads on Obama's politics, but including Brittney and Paris in a politial ad that the celebrities themselves didn't approve of? I wonder which celebrity is next? Will Smith? Now isn't Will suppose to "popular" and "cool" too? So much for the "clean" brand McCain was trying to portray. So here's the question? Is that ad an attack againt our youth? And more important, will this ad hurt him in November? All answers are welcome. :)
