In the debate, McCain portrayed Barack Obama as an excessive spender, and he punctuated his attack (twice) with this example:
"[Obama] voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel earmark projects, including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?"
The Adler Planetarium even issued a statement, noting that the request, ironically, was not even funded:
"To clarify, the Adler Planetarium requested federal support -- which was not funded -- to replace the projector in its historic Sky Theater, the first planetarium theater in the Western Hemisphere.... To remain competitive and ensure national security, it is vital that we educate and inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math."
Hello all,
If you believe in having quality, affordable health care, then you may want to sit down. Here's a quote from Sen. John McCain's article, entitled "Better Health Care at Lower Cost for Every American":
"Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation." (Emphasis added.)
The American health care system is already in crisis, and McCain wants it to follow in the footsteps of the banking sector? If you've been following the roller coaster news of the $700 billion dollar bailout of that industry, then you know how ridiculous that sounds. It's time to demand quality, affordable health care for all. »
Apparently, it's not enough that American families pay $217 million for health care per hour, while insurance industry profits have risen 1,000% in the past five years. Something needs to change, and it has to happen soon.
Thank you for your time,
Kelly Hussung
Who You Callin’ a Maverick?
There’s that word again: maverick. In Thursday’s vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the Republican candidate, used it to describe herself and her running mate, Senator John McCain, no fewer than six times, at one point calling him “the consummate maverick.”
Samuel Augustus Maverick
But to those who know the history of the word, applying it to Mr. McCain is a bit of a stretch — and to one Texas family in particular it is even a bit offensive.
“I’m just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick,” said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants.
In the 1800s, Samuel Augustus Maverick went to Texas and became known for not branding his cattle. He was more interested in keeping track of the land he owned than the livestock on it, Ms. Maverick said; unbranded cattle, then, were called “Maverick’s.” The name came to mean anyone who didn’t bear another’s brand.
Sam Maverick’s grandson, Fontaine Maury Maverick, was a two-term congressman and a mayor of San Antonio who lost his mayoral re-election bid when conservatives labeled him a Communist. He served in the Roosevelt administration on the Smaller War Plants Corporation and is best known for another coinage. He came up with the term “gobbledygook” in frustration at the convoluted language of bureaucrats.
This Maverick’s son, Maury Jr., was a firebrand civil libertarian and lawyer who defended draft resisters, atheists and others scorned by society. He served in the Texas Legislature during the McCarthy era and wrote fiery columns for The San Antonio Express-News. His final column, published on Feb. 2, 2003, just after he died at 82, was an attack on the coming war in Iraq.
Terrellita Maverick, sister of Maury Jr., is a member emeritus of the board of the San Antonio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas.
Considering the family’s long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, “is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase.”
“It’s just incredible — the nerve! — to suggest that he’s not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, ‘Oh, my God, he said it again.’ ”
“He’s a Republican,” she said. “He’s branded.”
It is time for a change. We need all to Register to vote!!!
P.S. Don't just depend on mailing it! Go in person if you can!!
We are running out of time. You want to vote, that's great but you must register before Oct. 6th. Some states want you to register before Oct. 6th. Don't believe the polls. They only poll likely voters whose main phone is a land line. There are millions of new registered voters and cell phone users who will never be polled and they are for Obama. Join us in electing Barack Obama. Your vote makes all the difference.
Did we get a reduction in the price of gas and heating oil? Do women in Iraq have equal rights? Did we protect the 100,000 plus Iraqi Christians? Can we trust that Iraq will be our allies in the future? Did we lower our deficit? Does Russia respect us? Can our allies depend on us to back them up if Russia invades? Did we catch Bin Laden? Do we have a stronger Army, Navy, Air force and Marine corps? Has it brought jobs back to America?
If the answer is no to all of the above, how are we safer?
We need as many people as possible to canvass. Eye to eye contact is the best way to win. Talking on the phone is good, but seeing a voter is better. We need four canvassing captains. We need you by 12:00 pm tomorrow. We need more people to just canvass. Help. We have had very few resources/people and those canvassers are worn out. We need new blood. Young Blood! We need more votes to counter any Hillary votes in the rural area.
Please help. Without you, we may have trouble achieving our goals election day. Please go to:1812 West Muhammed Ali
Jays Restaurant Talk to Million or JoySay you are there to canvass!
While Indiana goes to the polls I will be driving through Indiana from Kentucky to Chicago. I thought I would be home. I thought I would be able to make calls but I can't. In my business you go when you get the call or you may miss your one major job for the year. I was kind of sad that I would be missing a party I put together. I am happy to get the chance to work. I just want to say to you in Indiana get out and vote early tomorrow. You never know what will change your schedule. Get it out of the way there is nothing sadder than missing your chance to have your voice heard. The next second, minute or hour is not promised. If I were voting tomorrow I would have to pray that my polling station opened on time at 6:00 am. We don't do things on time in KY! You want your candidate to win! You have to vote!
IN and NC time is running out and May 6th might as well be yesterday. You don't have to wait until May 6th to vote. You know you're voting for Obama. Let the undecideds stand in line on May 6th. North Carolina can even register to vote and vote all in the same day. I want an early projection for Obama. I can't vote. I'm in KY. There's no early voting here.
Voting now is the easiest way to show your support. Don't wait until May 6th, Indiana! Don't wait until May 13th, WV! I know it is fun to wait in line and be part of the masses. I know you are getting around to it soon. But you should know the only support that truly matters is your vote. Everything else is cool, but not as important. Vote! Don't put it off. Don't say I don't have the time this week. Vote now! Your Polls are open. I'm so jealous!!! I have to wait in line like everyone else in KY! We don't have early voting. I am so jealous!!!!
You don't know where to vote early? Click on the icons below:
Welcome to West Virginia for Obama
Are you running just to continue a fight with Republicans? Sure you're a fighter and that's what fighters do.
I want a President who is not looking for a fight. I want a President who cares more about the country than about fighting old battles. I want a President to improve my beautiful country and unite its wonderful people. Barack Obama is that President. He will build the country up and if he has to fight for our citizen he will, but he isn't running just to fight. He's our next President. If fighting is so important to you maybe you should start practicing law again! You can fight in court all day!
Ohio and PA had their say. Today you can have yours. Vote Early. Vote Today. Give us an Early projection for Barack Obama. The sooner the Votes get in the sooner they can count them. We don't need a landslide, but we will have one. Time to get this done. Find out how to vote early below.
