Preston L. Harden: May 4th WPBA TV-30 Interview Request‏

I hope all is well with you. I was asked by the producer of the Emmy Award-winning public affairs show, "IN CONTACT" of WPBA TV-30 to participate in an upcoming segment: New Political Power: In the age of Obama. The program airs at 9am on Sunday mornings on Atlanta's own WPBA TV-30.

The half-hour program will take a look at the relevance of such iconic civil rights organizations as the NAACP, the National Urban League and Operation Push as they continue to service marginalized communities in what many are now calling a Post-Civil Rights Era and how to engage our young people are in these activities.

I will tape the segment on Monday, May 4th 2009 and will let you know when my program will be televised.

"IN CONTACT," hosted by veteran journalist and Atlanta Association of Black Journalist member Angela Robinson, delivers lively discussions on a variety of topics that connect and impact the African-American community, including the community's triumphs and challenges. REMEMBERING OUR DEAD NOV 20TH

[Photo from San Francisco DOR 2000] The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgendered — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgendered people.

[Photo from San Francisco DOR 2001] We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgendered people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgendered people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.

We can blame race, ignorance, politicians etc for the passage of Prop 8 and the other religious persecutions passed in the last election. That will get us no where. We need to take action, we all do. Yep that means you too! We can start by signing a petition to remove the tax exempt status of the financial backers of this modern day witch burning, the LDS aka Mormon Church. Start there and add to that any church, such as another financial backer 7th Day Adventists, which uses pulpit to effect political change.

Count your vote, Make it count

     Election Day is upon us, then we can go back to regular commercials on television.
     Congratulations, it appears that everyone's hard work will surely "pay-off".

    Unfortunately, one major problem remains unaddressed and appears to be worse this year, more widespread, than the 2004 election. Vote Fraud. Not, mind you, voter fraud, but computer dysfunction, hacking, and even built in "flip" voting.

     Do we remember the 2004 election? All the networks declared John Kerry the winner, except Fox News. As the very important Florida votes came in, Fox News declared George Bush the winner. The other networks checked their own figures and "gosh darn" George Bush was the winner. How did that happen, all the other networks somehow had the wrong figures, or more exactly, suddenly those figures "flipped".

     Later, December 2004, a man named Clint Curtis testified under oath before the House Judiciary Committee on vote fraud.

     Mr. Curtis testified that he worked for Yang Enterprises Incorporated (which proudly proclaims on its site, "To provide high quality engineering and computer services for both the government and private industries"). Clint Curtis testified under oath that he was approached to create and did create a program that would “flip” a percentage of the votes to the other candidate. I hope you will click the link and watch the full video (from a movie insert but apparently the true testimony)

     The House Judiciary Committee did find vote "flipping" in the Presidential election of 2004. One "hint" of this happening is the flicker on the screen. The program which Curtis mentions, however, does not "flip" as the individual votes, a person flips a specific percentage of the votes after the voting is finished. Did the 2004 Florida vote “flip” at the last minute? We the People should be very worried.

     Already, some machines are showing flickers, many called “over or under sensitive screen problems etc. This is not some programmer or screen-maker error. This could easily be resolved in programming, why was it not done. We like to believe in honesty, especially in the election process, however, it is just no longer feasible to believe this.

     Like it or not, we need to take back our country, "change from the ground-upward" as we have been told. Our politicians will do nothing to address this problem but "We the People" will, in order to KEEP this more perfect Union more perfect!

     Election Day, Tuesday November 4, 2008, I plan to go to my appointed voting place, vote and stay there, all day if I must.

     I will take with me a large cardboard box having a hole cut in the top. I will take thousands of slips of scratch paper and a gang of pencils. Staying at least 25 feet from the building entrance, I will ask voters to please write "M" or "McCain or "O" or "Obama" on a slip and put it, unseen, into the box.

     Explaining that this is an anonymous gathering of the votes to check with the computer totals at this precinct to make sure there is no large difference between the ballots cast inside and the intended receiver of that individual vote. The ballot is the private business of the individual voter but the total of votes cast and for whom is important to keep the system honest.

     I will wear no campaign materials, this is not for campaigning, supporters are to take the day off, says Obama. You deserve that.

     This situation, however, demands our time. We are doing this for the honesty of this election and the protection of future elections in this country. If the other candidate wins in our individual districts, one need not be happy but we know that we are able to accept what comes.

     We are much stronger than to tamper with the paper trail we are creating in our individual districts. Tampering, with our own totals, will only do us harm and is out of the question. This is for the future voting rights of all Americans.

     I am inviting anyone to volunteer for this with me. Regardless of political affiliation, color, creed, etc. This is for the nation at large, not for our individual egos. Wherever you live, gather and do your individual precincts.

     I hope you will join me in this. Some may scoff at me but I do not care, this very Democracy deserves my time. Be it alone all day, I wholly plan to do this.
     I hope that you will do the same at your precincts. We have come too far to trust this election to others. Nobody will watch out for us, We must take action. If the results are true, then great. If the results are incorrect and we have done nothing, we get what we get, like it or not.

voter fraud protection, grassroots

Hi All,

     What a long and sometime tumultuous ride we have had! I am so proud of this country because of fellow people like you. We are America.

     Of course, it is not over yet. I figure that I cannot just sit home and not vote on Tuesday, because I think it is going to be a "win". Lol I know that I have to keep on others to keep them motivated to go out and vote, for sure. One way is to offer rides to others, especially the elderly, but anyone.

     Frankly, an admittance, me bad, I know that there have been voting days when I just had to force myself to go out and vote because I just plain didn't feel like driving to the polling place. What always forced me to go is that I know if I do not vote, then I have nothing to say about the outcome. Now, we have to contend with gas prices so I will have to fill my tank (which I can surely not afford) and offer to drive others to the polls.

     Nevertheless, I see a greater problem here. I am most worried about voter fraud. Computers with too sensitive touch screens (this has to be rigged, as there are too many 'double check's which can be programmed which have not been). From the 2004 gaffs to next Tuesday's vote, I am afraid and I am sure I have a right to be.

     I believe everyone should be afraid, after what we have seen in the past few elections. One county with around 500 registered voters allegedly posted around 5000 votes for George Bush! There should never be a ballot without a paper trail; this is just plain sense.

     I am now thinking (do not laugh, I do that sometimes) that I might take a box or a few boxes, a few thousand slips of paper and some pencils to the local polling place. That I would try to sit at the polling place all day and ask voters leaving the booths that they please write, privately, for whom they voted and stick it into the box(s?).

     Later, after the polling is over, I would count those slips and check to see if there is any big difference between my count, my averages, and the election results posted by the voting precinct I was at all day.

     Now, I am wondering, what if this happened at local polling places all across the country. Is it possible, a People’s Paper Trail to keep tabs on the big boys?

     All of you have created and maintained a wondrous grassroots campaign. I will bet you can do the same to make sure this is a clean election.

     Is anyone else interested in such a thing? It does not have to be fancy but it is something we can do to watchdog our election.

Voted early

On Wednesday, early voting began in Berkley County, WV and we voted around 1:30 in the afternoon. We were numbers 290 and 291 to vote on this first day. The voting place was well organized and a steady stream of early voters kept around 75% of the machines full. The whole preocess took less than 10 minutes and we're done.

I encourage everyone to take advantage of early voting. YES WE CAN.

The differences between candidates this year could not be sharper. Years of experience does not automatically equal strong leadership and sound judgment. If that were the case, we would be electing President Cheney next month. Sound, thoughtful, even-handed leadership is essential for the next president. Our children and grandchildren demand that, no less.

I respect John McCain and his patriotism. I too served 21 years in the military. I flew combat missions in Vietnam every day. By the grace of God, I came home safe. However, that service did not qualify me to become president.

The 1990s maverick is no more."Straight Talk" became double talk. He condemned the far right, now panders; was against the Bush tax cuts, now embraces them; opposed off-shore drilling, now it's drill baby drill; fought for deregulation, now champions regulation.

He railed against lobbyists, now they're key advisors. He condemned negative campaigning, now only runs negative campaigns. He claims country first, then selects an unqualified VP from Wasilla. Memphis, Tenn., has more people than all of Alaska. West Virginia has three times as many.

We need a wise, calm, stable president. We need a leader who is decisive, but not impulsive; one willing to consider the best advice and act with conviction. We need a president who has the vision to make America great once again.

I do believe that our best days are ahead; that our children can have a better life; that the American Dream is still alive and available to all who want to strive. I believe the choice is clear: Barak Obama and Joe Biden.

The Unfortunate Season

The McCain/Palin campaign has dragged our political discourse to a dark and unfortunate place. I have never seen such venality, racism, and fear mongering emanating from a campaign before. These guys make the Bush smear machine look like a bunch of amateurs. As a result of the foul discourse Republicans have forced into our political world, I have come to regard the McCain/Palin campaign as the most divisive, bigoted, and destructive force in modern politics. I cannot comprehend being a Republican voter and feeling anything but shame and disappointment in response to the last two weeks of sludge that has oozed from the Republican ticket. We stand at a unique moment in our history. This election has truly become a choice between those things which are hopeful, just, and decent and those things which are fear-based, divisive, and petty. This is about what kind of America we want to be. Can we truly say that we want to be an America that rewards hate and divisive lies? Or, can we stand up and repeat the sentiment of Senator Obama by loudly proclaiming, "ENOUGH." We must find the courage to become the better America we all want and need, an America where division is something from the past and hate is an intolerable and unusual concept. It is my belief that if Democrats lose this election, the resulting demoralization and suppression of future voters will be beyond measure and nearly irreversible. The American public is hungry for hope and begging for a world free of fear and devoid of bigotry. We cannot afford to prolong the dread, the division, and the desperation of the last 8 years. Change is more than a word now, it is an absolute necessity.

As a disabled retired Arm guy and second career business man, I have a lot of time to satisfy my news junkie habits since I don't "get out much anymore". This year the Democrats seem to be floundering, again, in an election year where everything should be lined up for them to achieve an overwhelming victory. I don’t see victory as the sure thing right now. I’ve poured more time and money into helping this team succeed than any time in my 60+ years because I believe in their message and capabilities, but we’re not there yet.McCain and Palin or should I say Palin and McCain should be in the pits right now, but they are gaining in the polls. They have nothing new to offer the country, but the country doesn’t seem to care. They have no record of change that is different from the last eight years. Yet, they are closing to within the margin of error across the country. The bounce surely belongs to Palin and she seems to have some kind of protective cloak to shield her from questioning experience, values and readiness to be Vice President much less President.I believe that Barak Obama and Joe Biden are the only ones with the ideas, energy and experience to lead our country out of desperate straits. But, I drink the progressive cool aid too.

Race is an inescapable factor in this election, but it does not have to be decisive.

I've been with my black spouse for 15 years. I'm an older white guy and I know what kind of under-the-surface prejudice exists in the country.
For Barak's message to trump the I'm-not-sure I-can-vote-for-a-black-guy-bias, it has to be clear, crisp, punchy and meaningful to average Americans.
That is especially true for Low Information voters who get their news in 15 second sound bites. 'It has to be true, I heard so-and-so say it."

It’s time for the Democrats (Obama, Biden and all the surrogate) to get a clear, simple message on the economy, jobs, infrastructure, trade, health care, immigration, the housing mess, wall street, taxes, deficits, national debt, global warming and a host of other major concerns. Long essays on nuanced issues fall flat.

The country needs to hear the real news about the future. I needs to hear the good, the bad and all the news inbetween in a genuine and honest manner. Americans will rally to a call to sacrifice if that's what is needed to heal our broken country for the sake of our kids and grandkids.This is our election to loose, but we can do it if we don't focus our message.

New ads need to show McCain’s poor understanding of the economy, his changed positions on immigration, taxes, drilling, regulation, oversight and other key issues. We have to glue McCain/Palin to Bush so they can’t wiggle free. Let Palin answer the 3AM phone call.
We have to continue to state the obvious: Obama is a Christian. He is not a radical Muslim. He is not a black anarchist. He is a patriot. Biden is still a grass roots guy even with 36 years in Washington.
We need to become relentless in attacking the Republicans. Run them over and over until they are suffocated. Tell the truth but keep up the pressure.

That's just my 2 cents forty-eight days out.

The fog of commercials

Like most of you, I thought the Democratic National Convention was right on target. The RNC came off OK after McCain shocked the country with his VP selection. From then on everything Republican became Palin.Now that the conventions are past and the post event bumps have evened out the polls, the American people are inundated with commercial after commercial trying to make the race about personality instead of issues. The sad part is that those kinds of ads have an impact. Truth doesn't seem to be a necessary ingredient. Last Friday before IKE hit Galveston/ Houston, I called my 70 year old cousin who lives in Houston to see if she was prepared for the storm. She was and we chatted for a bit, then at the end of the conversation she asked me who I supported in November. I said Obama and she asked me if he was really a Muslim. I told her no and that all of that was just made up stuff. She asked about experience and I answered judgment. Dick Cheney had tons of experience and look what it got us. My point is that many Americans believe all the Limbaugh, Fox Noise and Republican talking points.This election is vital for our nation's future. Even with a Democratically controlled House and Senate, a Republican President would be a disaster. We need to fix the constitutional fractures of the last 8 years and rebuild America's standing in the world.The next President will face an economic crisis not seen since the Great Depression. The Republicans under Bush/ Cheney/ McCain borrowed $1 Trillion dollars to pay for an elective war. Throughout American history, when the nation went to war, her citizens were asked to sacrifice to pay the price. WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam were pay as you go conflicts. IRAQ is a credit card war. Bush/ Cheney/ McCain never asked the American People to rally behind a noble cause and pay the cost. If they had, we would have been out of IRAQ before we went into IRAQ. Which is worse, the tired labels of tax and spend for Democrats for the truth of Charge and Spend of the Republicans?Now, McCain/ Palin want Americans to believe that by somehow stopping earmarks (most of which serve the public good) and trusting them, that we will have a sound economy. Ain't gonna happen!The next President needs to invest money to create jobs now. If that means we establish a new WPA or CCC then let's start now on roads, bridges and critical infrastructure projects. The sooner we get unemployment down and wages flowing, the sooner the economy will stand back on its feet.The new President needs to invest in alternate energy technology. Using the National Laboratories, entrepreneurial innovation in basements and garages around this country and economic incentives to invest in and buy energy efficient technology, we can make American independent from foreign oil.Barak Obama and Joe Biden will make that happen, but only if we tell our friends and neighbors the truth. We can't let the lies and 527s win the day. WE, Individual Americans must take a stand.

Hi everyone,

I am posting here for the first time so thought I'd introduce myself. I am a blogger/podcaster/youtube video producer and I just got back from Denver. It was electric and I am fired up to do what I can to help Barack win. I've just signed up on this site, I plan to contact my election office Monday to see about being a poll watcher and I intend to be an active member in the GLBT Tennessee group here. I had a guest blogger in Denver: Marisa Richmond, Tennessee's first African-American transgender delegate. She posted daily from the convention floor at the Pepsi Center and Mile High Stadium. There were several exciting glbt events we covered including the HRC premier show with Melissa Ethridge, Cyndi Lauper and others. Cheers to all and let's go take our country back!

1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you "unpatriotic" simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be "different" or "immoral." Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love -- it's a wonderful gift.

3. We will not spend your grandchildren's money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It's your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

How to Handle Republicans Who Attack Barack Obama and Democrats

Feel free to use this when receiving/hearing "cute jokes" or negative comments about Barack Obama or Democrats from Republicans. There is nothing wrong with personally holding them responsible for the Bush/Republican atrocities of the past 8 years.

1 - First ask them who they voted for in 2000 and 2004 for president (obviously almost all of them will admit Bush, some even proudly... remember I live in Texas).

2 - When they reply Bush ask them why any sane person should pay attention to anything they have to say about politics since they supported arguably the worst president in American history and certainly one of the worst and they are still supporting the same lunacy. Obviously their judgement is seriously flawed.

3 - Let them know that their opinions will be held suspect and therefore ignored. One might think that it takes great chutzpah to recommend voting for Republicans this year. However, in light of the cataclysmic impact of Republican policy and abuses of power over the past 8 years it just showcases their selfishness, blind ignorance and devotion to failure!

4 - Suggest to them that they stop forwarding emails that further highlight their stupidity. Rather than making jokes about and attacking the Democrats, suggest that they should look inside themselves to figure out how they could have been so wrong.

5 - Let them know that you will ignore their political comments so as not to have to remind them that they have a habit of making poor choices, backing dangerous candidates who make a habit of backing failed polities that hurt America's economy, help only the rich, get our country involved with unnecessary wars and destroy our reputation around the world.

6 - Suggest that instead of attacking Democrats that they work to fix the GOP (Guard Our Profits trumping social responsibility, better known as greed).

7 - Remind them that unlike the Republican Party which cares only about members of the "Lucky Sperm Club," the Democrats have broad shoulders and welcome their votes. Unlike the Bush Administration, Democrats truly are compassionate and not like Bush whose idea of compassionate conservatism was a smile followed by his middle finger).

8 - Get as many people registered to elect Barack Obama president and stronger Democratic control of the Congress and more Democrats elected at the state and local levels.

Ooh that felt good! And yes, I came up with these suggestions myself and I'm not just forwarding from a friend.

Feel free to send these suggestions in response to any mean spirited emails you receive. It is time to put the Republicans on the defensive. They are the wrongful party, not Barack Obama, Not the Democratic Party and not you. Through their support of George W. bush (and now John McCain) they are as guilty as Bush/McCain!

OBAMA BLOG GROUP PROMOTION

With all the groups I'm communicating with, I hear the same things regarding Obama T-shirts, buttons and caps, etc.

Many "Obama Blog Group" members wish they could have Obama T-shirts (for example) that tout their blog interests and the URL. Example: "Bookworms for Obama read between the lines" on the front; with "Elect Obama Nov. 4th" on the back.

My Obama effort designing T-shirts, caps, buttons, tote bags and so on is able to make this stuff in a day and post online. If you want gear for your Obama Blog Group, send me an e-mail with the name of your group and any slogan you may want -- and I'll make it -- gladly!

In the e-mail subject line put -- "STORE STUFF" -- so I can sort your message from the mountain of correspondence I get from the Obama campaign each day.

Money from this effort I'm sure the Obama campaign could use.

And he is”The One?”the Bush Republicans are offering America?Not a brilliant candidate bearing smart policy proposals. Simply a McCain platter laden with desperation and smear. More old politics I hear?

When I borrowed the famous Australian author Bryce Courtenay’s book and movie title “The Power of One” (his superb works acknowledged, credited and finding new readers around the world as a result), to write in answer to a lady concerned about racial and security issues directed at Senator Obama early in the Primaries, little did I realise that the media and now the McCain campaign would appreciate the appropriateness of that title in describing the qualities attributed to Senator Obama in my response also titled “The Power of One”.

More recently sections of the America media and other outlets, have begun to use the abbreviated version, ”The One” when on occasions, referring to Obama. ( more often since his return from that highly publicised and successful overseas sojourn) . Although Maureen Dowd, on tour with Obama when writing for the New York Times, was possibly the first. Dowd’s clever use of literary sarcasm, contained no malice.

However, Ms Dowd, the Lady in Red, (hair that is) was soon copied by others, with other less intelligent ideas in mind.

Today, the McCain campaign hoping to capitalise politically by way of “satire”, released their amateurish attempt at sabotaging the Obama campaign, with their production of(”The One”), an online advertisement depicting Senator Obama as the so called “Messiah”. The advertisement reeks with colour. The colour of political jealousy - and it’s no more harmful than a really good laugh!

Perhaps John McCain should explain this “blasphemy” to members of the Christian faith to which he professes to belong, and whom he unashamedly courts for votes. Old politics again, ho hum.

While I appreciate the fact that the media and McCain’s people are finally waking up to the fact that Barack Obama is politically smart and intelligent ( is that such a bad thing after eight years of Bush?) surely it is time for the media to get back to concentrating on the pluses and minuses of the actual campaign proposals put forth by the candidates. Policies which need to be examined and explained. America cannot afford another dumb, corrupt President in the Oval Office.

It begs the question of American voters. Is is more important to be a loyal Republican, Democrat, or whatever else? Or is it a citizen’s duty to be a loyal American first, and vote for the person they actually believe is best qualified to deal with their country’s problems. In these troubled times, surely it is America’s good fortune in Obama, to have a candidate contesting this election, who given the opportunity and time, may prove to be - “The One”.

The alternative does not bear contemplating.John McCain placed 795th out of a graduating class of 800 at Annapolis. And he is”The One?”the Bush Republicans are offering America?Not a brilliant candidate bearing smart policy proposals. Simply a McCain platter laden with desperation and smear. More old politics I hear?.

As the author of the Obama profile “The Power of One” in support of Senator Barack Obama, I thank sections of the American media and the obvious unintelligence of the McCain campaign for the opportunity to draw further attention to Senator Obama’s qualifications for Office.

Let's send some messages to demand responsibility in government

Hi All,

     We have watched our political system become filled with irresponsibility and a demand that people are above our law.
      I hope you will please investigate these links, which are timely, and make a decision if you would want to see responsible politics put back into the system.

     This one is Karl Rove (McCain’s new campaign spin/lie master). He claims nothing less than “executive privilege” to not honor a Federal Subpoena. I forget when he was elected President! Do not let him get away with this!

     Like Barack says, it is “bottom up” instead of “top down”. We cannot expect one man to change everything about the way government is run. We must take action ourselves to help Barack. One think is holding people responsible for what they say and what they do.
     Bush said many things about responsibility and takes none himself.

     Let us hold these people responsible for what they do. Show them that we are not just some supporters of Barack Obama for some “movement”. That we are the movement and we mean business.
