Florida For Obama
We the people of Florida will help support Senator Barack Obama in his campaign for the Presidency of the United States of America. Go Obama!

What else is worth fighting for? For me it is education, healthcare, Women's rights, and tolerance.

I don't want to control anyone's reproductive health. I don't want to tell someone who or what they should believe in. I don't want to listen to other peoples conversations or control where they visit. I don't want anyone to feel fear and to be controlled by that fear.
Telcom immunity does not allow room for compromise. Our Bill of Rights specifically states that Congress CANNOT pass any law that would infringe upon our right to petition the courts for a redress of grievances. Everyone is shouting about the 4th amendment right regarding illegal search and seizure which is a valid argument as well because that is also protected in the Bill of Rights & Constitution.

A provision of Immunity is illegal itself because Congress cannot grant any privilege that denies our protected rights. The Constitution trumps Congress. The Bush administration has been on a rampage against our Constitution at every turn. To support his assault is inexcusable on any level because Congress has taken an oath of office to uphold the Constitution.

I still support Mr. Obama but he is losing his luster by playing into Mr. Bush's hands on yet another attempt to circumvent the Constitution.

If he is willing to trade our rights for votes, he is less of an exception and becoming more the "rule" in politics.

Now we are stuck. He made one promise to fight against immunity. Now he said he will not only NOT fight against it, he will actually vote to allow it. If he does the right thing now it will be ammunition against him to be used by McCain. I could have felt somewhat better if he withdrew his support of the filibuster but still voted against the bill. That is not about his candidacy..that is about his doing his sworn duty as a seated Senator who has an obligation to America to uphold and defend the Constitution. This is not something that can or should be compromised.   Read More »
I believe that we are all created equal.
I believe in the right of life, of liberty
and the pursuit of happiness.

I believe in freedom,
freedom to think, to speak,
freedom to love,
freedom to learn,
freedom to worship a God of our own choosing.

I believe in the flag
in the red, white and blue
in the star spangled banner of stripes,
may she forever wave over all of our streets,
our homes, our children,
an ever present reminder
watching over us in living color.

I believe in all the soldiers
who have fought underneath her,
unfurling in the storm of patriotism,
who have bled, who have died
to ensure my freedom,
the freedom of a woman
they have never even met,
to ensure the ideals of a country
much greater than the sum of its parts.

I believe in democracy
in the power of the republic,
I believe in the office of servants
public,
not the brick and the mortar
but that in which it uprightly holds,
souls
dutifully striving to serve us and our best interest.

I believe in the idea called America.
Interesting opinion piece in today's NY Times: Rove's Third Term. If that's not the most cautionary headline of the past week, it's surely in the Top 5, IMHO....

Excerpts:
...Wesley Clark didn't impugn John McCain's military service. ...The latest fake scandal fit the usual pattern as an awkwardly phrased remark, lifted out of context [by the media] and willfully misinterpreted, exploded across the airwaves. ...The willingness of the McCain campaign to engage in these tactics, employing such tainted spokesmen [as retired Col. Bud Day, who swift-boated John Kerry], tells us that the campaign has decided to go negative -- specifically, to apply the strategy Karl Rove used so effectively in 2002 and 2004...

...The New York Times reports signs of the "increasing influence of veterans of Mr. Rove's shop in the McCain operation."

"Two days into the Wesley Clark fallout," wrote the Columbia Journalism Review on Tuesday morning, "the press, the G.O.P., and the Obama campaign all seem to have agreed that Clark's recent remarks on John McCain's service record were at best impolitic and at worst despicable."

Since then, however, both the press and the Obama campaign seem to have recovered some of their balance. Opinion pieces have started to appear pointing out that General Clark didn't say what he's accused of saying. Mr. Obama has also declared that General Clark doesn't owe Mr. McCain an apology for his "inartful" remarks and denies that his own condemnation, in a speech given on Monday, of those who "devalue" military service was aimed at the general.

...[M]y sense, though it's hard to prove, is that the press is feeling a bit ashamed about the way it piled on General Clark. If so, news organizations may think twice before buying into the next fake scandal.

I wouldn't count on that ... but we can hope, I guess and we definitely can write letters to editors and executive producers (on the second link, scroll about halfway down the page to Broadcast Media contacts).
Happy birthday America. This could be the year you get a new birth of freedom... and boy after eight years of a Republican president, you sure do need it.

Polk for Obama grassroots organization held their first meeting on Saturday.  We had over 100 people in attendance!  We had people from all walks of life in attendance with one common goal...to help put Barack Obama in the White House.  It was a fantastic meeting and we've had great feedback from so many who were there.  Another group met in Lakeland and they had approximately 50 on Saturday.  Lakeland was certainly buzzing afterwards.

We're off to a great start.  Our roots are in the ground with 150 people signed up to volunteer for phonebanking, voter registration, house parties and GOTV.   From those 150 people branches will begin to spread.

If you want to work for Obama in Polk, join us!  Just e-mail me with your name and phone number and what town or city you live in.  I'll add you to the list of volunteers and we'll e-mail you to notify you of events happening around Polk.

Peace~

Bettina
