I received the following e-mail today asking for more money in the battle for health care reform!
Why the heck is OFA asking for more money when we already donated our time, money, sweat and tears to get President Obama elected with a mandate of the vote?!
Not only that, we helped give the Democrats a veto-proof majority in the Senate!
Why does anybody need more money? Enough already - they've been elected and they're already on the payroll!!
I say to the President and the Democrats in congress: "We gave you the mandate, now start acting like it and get to work for us by making sure a public option is in the final health care bill!"
Health care reform without a public option will be a BIG win for the Republicans and the Insurance industry. We didn't work our hearts out so that could happen.
FIGHT - FOR OUR RIGHT - FOR HEALTHCARE - WITH A PUBLIC OPTION!!!!!!!
My response to the letter below - "Not another cent until we get the guarantee that any final bill will contain a true public option!!!!" Karl --On Thursday, Vice President Biden called out the insurance industry's escalating war on health reform in a special message to OFA, and asked for your help in fighting back.Sure enough, the insurance industry is already stepping up the attack: Reports just leaked from a closed-door meeting where insurance industry lobbyists frantically warned Republican members of Congress that it was not in their interest to "ever vote for this thing" and said supporting reform is like "giving comfort to the enemy." USA Today is reporting that groups opposing reform are lobbying at "a record pace" -- and the Associated Press notes that they've already spent an astounding $32 million on TV ads this year. This is what we're up against. President Obama, Vice President Biden, and all of us together through OFA are fighting back -- but success depends on having the resources to win.Can you chip in $25 or more today to power our campaign?https://donate.barackobama.com/FinalRoundIn this fight, the insurance industry has their war chest and insider lobbyists. We have you. I know who I'm betting on.Let's win this thing.MitchMitch StewartDirectorOrganizing for AmericaPaid for by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee -- 430 South Capitol Street SE, Washington, D.C. 20003. Lawrence P. Adams, Fargo, Letter: Obama critic fails to tell whole truth Published Friday, October 03, 2008
I was very disappointed in the Forum’s decision to run such a one-sided opinion article Sunday (Sept. 21) titled, “Obama cozies up to glitterati” by Katherine DeBrecht. In it DeBrecht castigates Sen. Barack Obama for attending a fundraiser in Beverley Hills on Sept. 17.
He raised more than $9 million at the event. People attending were charged $28,000 for dinner and $2,500 to attend a concert afterwards.DeBrecht made it appear that Obama only appears at so-called “elitist” events to raise his funds for the campaign.
DeBrecht fails to mention three important facts:
On Aug. 25, McCain attended a so-called “elitist” event in Hollywood with “B” list stars raising more than $4.5 million
On Sept. 16, McCain attended a so-called “elitist” event in Miami with his “big donors” raising $5 million. Attendees were charged $50,000 to attend.
Obama has raised more than $390 million during his campaign. Ninety percent of those donations have come from “small donors” giving an average of less than $100.
Both campaigns raise funds for their campaign from big and small donors. These donors are limited to $2,300 each for the primary season and another $2,300 for the general election. The amounts given above these limits go to their respective parties, not the campaign.
The least DeBrecht could do is tell both sides of the picture rather than attempting to paint a picture of Obama being an “elitist.” She should also be aware that even her so-called “elitists” are American citizens and are thus entitled to participate in campaigns just like us average Americans.
I have given the maximum allowed by law to Obama’s campaign. I am not an “elitist” but have given a set amount each month to reach this limit.
DeBrecht should know her facts before being critical of another person, no matter which candidate she supports.

Join North Dakota Women's Weekend of Action Today!
Women to Women phone banks will be held at each of the 11 Campaign for Change offices in the state and run from 4:00 pm - 8:30 pm this Thursday.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden stand behind the women of North Dakota, they support the issues that matter most to them and we need you to come help us get that important message out.
Women were granted the right to vote in 1920 at the urging of Democratic President Woodrow Wilson and they have made the difference in every election since. This election will certainly be no different. Sign up today to reach out to women on Thursday.
"The choice here between Barack Obama and Joe Biden and the other ticket is so stark when it comes to the issues that working women and women at home care about." She believes the fact that North Dakota does not require voter registration provides an incredible opportunity for women in the state to help shape the outcome of this election.
On the issue of social security, she said,
"Social Security has been a stronghold for people to know that in retirement, in the loss of health or in the loss of work opportunities, that they will have a program that they've paid into that will benefit them in retirement. Why should women care about this? Women should care about this because they live longer"
Ms Cantwell said she has "faith and confidence that Barack Obama's priorities are the right priorities for North Dakota," and was surprised and excited to see the field effort that has already been established in the state on behalf of Barack,
"Today's effort is just another commitment by Senator Obama to say how much he cares about North Dakota, because if you care about North Dakota now, you're certainly going to care about North Dakota when you're in the White House. And so I really appreciate that he's putting the time and energy into understanding the issues here and to make the commitment to work hard with the people of this state."
"When I look at this transition we have to make, I want a new leader with new ideas, with a vision for the future, particularly on energy, who's going to get us off our dependence on Middle East oil"
On Monday, Senator Cantwell will hold a roundtable with women small business owners in Fargo. The discussion will focus on Senator Obama's plan to support North Dakota's working women.
The Rugby office is located at 607 Highway 2 SW and the Valley City Office is located at 150 2nd St SW.
The offices are open seven day per week, so stop by to find out how you can get involved.

Like Obama-Biden, North Dakotans Back Ethanol, Comprehensive Approach to Solving Energy Crisis
Last week, John McCain and his party's platform called for an end to a program that promotes important investments in renewable fuels like ethanol that are good for North Dakota's economy and are critical to ending our nation's dependence on foreign oil. North Dakota Republicans disagreed with McCain's position and seemed to side with the Obama plan to make the kind of significant investments in renewable energy and that are good for North Dakota and in the long-term interests of America.
Obama's Plan to Boost Biofuels and Fight Our Dependence on Foreign Oil
A Long Record of Support for Ethanol and Advanced Biofuels. Thanks to a law Barack Obama championed, gas stations are now eligible for tax credits for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching petroleum pumps. Obama also sponsored legislation requiring oil companies that made at least $1 billion in profits in the first quarter of 2006 to invest at least 1 percent of their total reported first quarter 2006 profits into installing E85 pumps. Obama also introduced legislation with Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) to require 2 billion gallons of alternative diesels, including biodiesel, to be produced domestically by 2015.
Develop the Next Generation of Sustainable Biofuels and Infrastructure. Advances in biofuels, including cellulosic ethanol, biobutenol and other new technologies that produce synthetic petroleum from sustainable feedstocks offer tremendous potential to break our addiction to oil. Barack Obama will work to ensure that these clean alternative fuels are developed and incorporated into our national supply as soon as possible. He will require at least 60 billion gallons of advanced biofuels by 2030. Obama will invest federal resources, including tax incentives and government contracts into developing the most promising technologies and building the infrastructure to support them.
Mandate All New Vehicles are Flexible Fuel Vehicles. Sustainably-produced biofuels can create jobs, protect the environment and help end oil addiction - but only if Americans drive cars that will take such fuels. General Motors is the largest producer of flexible fuel vehicles in the United States, and Obama will work with Congress and auto companies to ensure that all new vehicles have FFV capability - the capability by the end of his first term in office.
ObamaCart “rolled” over 2800 miles Across America from Divide, Montana to Unity, New Hampshire for Obama during the DNC Convention week from Aug 23-Aug 30! Traveling through 15 plus states along rural and small communities gaining media attention in each state with local newspapers and radio. As well small gatherings, events, and rallies cropped up along the route with a simple message of bringing positive attention of Obama for President along the way to open up awareness and create dialogue as the ObamaCart passed through the communities of: Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island straight up to New Hampshire and then end in Boston, Massachusetts.
The story began as a Yankee Trade between me in Boston and the Johnson's in Anaconda, Montana. I create Obama bookmarks and attach them to e-mails for printing as a cajole to donate to my Official Obama Fundraiser--others in the HQ blogs write Haikus, Limericks, An Obama Recipe Book, and a terrific Obama Quilt or some other method for attention as we battle for money blitzes in the BarackObama.com website blogs. Bill Johnson had already peaked with his donations and asked for a trade with a round wooden sign he made with the Obama logo painted on it. I said yes to the trade and he reported it was rather a joke as it was 500 pounds or was that 50 pounds…(a large wooden Wire-Spool) but that he would pay half the shipping if I wanted it. I said he should just roll it East to seal the deal. He said OK. I didn’t hear from Bill for about 2 weeks. Lo and behold Bill fashioned and attached an axle and made it into a Obama Pull-Cart that humans or a donkey could pull. And that began our adventure which grassroots style blew up into a big adventure and we together with his wife Dixie were in the thick of it, setting up host beds for their nights with events, small rallies and small community media as he rolled East.
It quickly became too big for us but as we are only “community organizers” but of course we did it because we are Community Organizers! The Johnson’s were quite brave and adventurous. They hitched a trailer bed to their car and placed the ObamaCart on it in visible site, ready to be taken out for a moment’s “pull” for a few miles or around a block by those willing along route. I then needed to forge ahead and guide them East with what was next and up ahead. It was time consuming and many a day I thought I fell into a vortex and everything around me suffered except that I knew there was much “rolling” on me to see it through as a team with the Johnson’s and the kind folks who stepped up and offered a host bed for the Johnsons along the way, an event, a convention watch party, a picnic, a rally or a cheer and then a donation, and suddenly we weren’t alone in making it happen! The small community newspapers were thrilled to have some election attention along their route. A friend of mine who just became a brand new US Citizen decided to underwrite the expenses of the trip for gas and tolls so we could concentrate on the fundraising component on HQ website.
Bill Johnson exhausted at night would try to get a diary out on his Obama Blog Group site From Divide to Unity for Obama.
We received notes of inspiration from those who received our blogs and were tickled by the story as a brave grassroots adventure with national community interest! Our Event Fundraiser was successful and we are still receiving donations for the adventures from the ObamaCart.
It should be noted that Bill and Dixie Johnson needed to get back to Montana and that is a whole other route passing through DC that concluded to almost 6000 miles with ObamaCart!
At long last arriving in Unity, New Hampshire the Johnsons met up with a journalist for a local paper. The Johnson’s then backtracked and wended their way to me in Boston at 10:00 P.M. on Friday, August 29 to seal our deal and my husband Antonio and I had their desirous dinner of New England lobster and steamed clams waiting for them as well as our trade for the Obama bookmarks! My husband is like many of the spouses in Obamanation, a true supporter, but one who keeps the house and family going while the other is actively volunteering for the campaign more full time than was expected!
The Johnson’s are the loveliest, kindest, most interesting and knowledgeable folks to meet! After long tight bear hugs we immediately jabbered away about the great Democrat Convention for Obama and how pleased we are with Joe Biden coming on board as VP! We had much to talk about their travels East with ObamaCart, which the Johnson’s say is a life long keepsake memory and will forever treasure meeting the good folk all along the way. It should be noted that Bill’s inspiration was to make it a good old-fashioned campaign event that was positive and fun—and that he made his mission and succeeded. We ended up talking about kitchen table issues—just like the rest of America. But it wasn’t all about politics, after my husband and Bill checked in for sleep, Dixie and I stayed up until 3 A.M. getting to know each but acting as if we always have in a giggling fit over Bill staying left on a Boston rotary and couldn’t get off but kept going round and round while Dixie and I were on the telephone with each other trying to get Bill to take a right. Of course Bill has a different version of this and squarely blames me and then Dixie the co-pilot for telling him to stay left! But we were all punchy for lack of sleep and tears of laughter was the best medicine!
Saturday morning brought us all together with the Anonymous underwriters of the trip and we headed out to Castle Island in Boston to hand-pull the ObamaCart around the American Revolution Fort Independence. I got to witness for the first time what the Johnsons were able to enjoy the whole trip and that was seeing first hand the soft approach and easy attraction of the ObamaCart for the curious folks on the street. Bill and Dixie were natural Obama supporters with those that stopped to chat. Many of the curious signed their names on the one Obama wheels that the Johnsons will keep as a souvenir of their adventure. Bill made over a dozen Obama logo wheel signs and passed them out along the route East with the Yankee Trade one for me, now my Obama garden sign and later an outdoor garden table!
My family and the Johnsons wish to thank everyone along route who participated in making this a great success! Up with Community Organizers! Up with Obama/Biden!
We still get tickled from a dollar per mile donation as you would like to own.

Well, Senator Obama has finally said something that I strongly disagree with. He said during an interview on The O’Reilly Factor that “[The surge] it’s succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.” It is a common mistake to assume cause-and-effect without supporting facts. For example, Bush implements the ‘surge’ and a few months later we have the transfer of Anbar from US to Iraqi control therefore the ‘surge’ is a success. Actually, the transfer was the results of the Awakening groups, those Sunni Arab tribal groups that decided, not so much that we were their friends but that our enemy was their enemy. The ‘surge’ made no contribution to this. It has made very little and probably no contribution to the increasing number of trained Iraqi military and police personnel. And it is making no contribution to the struggle by the Shia, Sunni and Kurds to form a truly representative government. Though the situation in Iraq is complex and certainty is illusive, I believe that the ‘surge’ has made no significant positive contribution to the situation. Governor Palin asked an interesting question today: we must ask where we would be today without the surge. Very likely the Iraq situation would be as it is today and we would have more resources to deal with a significantly deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. Senator Obama, you were right and you have a fundamentally deeper understanding of the situation in Iraq and the Middle East than your opposition.
In addition to Earl, District 42 State House candidates Cory Mock and Bruce Stanford, State Senate candidate Mac Schneider, and Public Service Commission candidate Cheryl Bergian were on hand to talk to students at the University of North Dakota on Wednesday.
Before getting to the meat of this blog entry I want to be up front: I decided to support Senator Barack Obama well over a year ago and have worked hard accordingly. This is despite the fact that I have voted Republican on the Presidential level since 1972.
While I was thrilled with the Democratic Party Convention last week I still watched much of the Republican Party Convention this week. I have always felt one must know their opposition.
The theme since Senator McCain announced his choice of Governor Palin as his running mate this past Friday is CHANGE. This is the subject I wish to address and see if in fact this is true.
The first two nights of their convention was anything but CHANGE. This was shown its starkest on Wednesday with a line up of speakers including former NYC Mayor Guilliani and governor Palin!
They made the choice to use the same old tired tactics of Karl Rowe. This included many nasty, divisive attacks on their opposition. They were not attacks on policy but extremely personal. Though Governor Palin is totally new to the national scene she learned very well in 5 days the tactics of Rowe for the past eight years.
No CHANGE!!
The closing night of the convention began with Senator Graham and former Governor Ridge continuing the attack campaign from Wednesday night.
They were followed by Mrs. McCain and I will admit that was change due to something that happened Wednesday night. Former Mayor Guilliani and Governor Palin made mocking attacks on Senator Obama’s early career as a “community organizer.” It was one of the disgusting attacks of the week. However, Mrs. McCain’s speech was all about community organizing and folks helping each other. I have to wonder if she didn’t get the Wednesday “memo!” This was NOT change!
However the highlight of the convention was to be the acceptance speech of Senator McCain of his party’s nomination to be President. He would present the case for CHANGE!!
I agree he did make a couple of strong points of change:
1. Throughout the campaign, especially after Senator Obama claimed the Democratic nomination McCain has stressed EXPERIENCE. However after months of this theme he apparently realized he was losing so suddenly his theme became CHANGE. He of course did not note that this has been the theme Senator Obama had been running on since the day he announced his campaign back in February 2007.
2. Other than a brief video appearance on Tuesday night President Bush was treated as though he did not exist and has not been President for the past eight years. This though Senator McCain had voted overall 90% of the time with President Bush the past eight years we were to pretend those years never happened. We were also to forget that the Republicans totally controlled the US Congress for six of the past eight years and still had enough Senators the last two years to stop any change the Democrats wanted to do.
3. Senator McCain finally admitted that Washington had changed the Republican party, they had lost their ways, had corruption, etc. He would CHANGE this of course he did not say he has been a part of that history not only during the Bush administration but for the past twenty-six years!
Finally he came to what should be should have been his case for CHANGE…what he planned to do if elected in November.
I found myself quite disappointed. Though Senator McCain had earlier in his speech, by omission of President Bush and statements of Republican failures, presented the EXACT SAME ECONOMIC AND FOREIGN POLICY & ENERGY PLAN that had failed during the past eight years.
Senator McCain used the word CHANGE 22 times during his speech Thursday night however in the end he presented SAME.
He did not tell us a plan of getting people back to work (84, 000 more folks lost their jobs last month as announced this morning…this makes 8 months in a row of job loss), provide health care to all, affordable college, solve the current housing/credit crisis and a real energy plan beside drill, drill, drill. Yes, he mentioned a full plan but did not say he had voted numerous times against providing funds or tax credits for such plans the past several years.
I think a Freudian slip made earlier in the night by former Governor Ridge summed up the night best in an interview with MSNBC. He said, “John Bush“… before correcting himself.
Yes after all the talk Thursday night of CHANGE we got more of the SAME in policy.
It is no wonder around the country we hear the terms of McSame and McBush. This in the end is all that Senator McCain offers. Let’s deny the past eight years but then lets do the same in the next four years.!
Sorry Senator McCain I will stick with the one who had CHANGE from the start f his campaign and has offered policies of REAL CHANGE for the next four to eight years.
You and your party had your chance, you failed and IT IS TIME FOR A REAL CHANGE!!!! I’ll be voting Obama/Biden and NOT McCain/Palin!!!!!

Senator Barack Obama graduated from college and could have gone anywhere for his career...he went to Chicago to work as a community organizer on the southside. He spent three years working on behalf of this community, where he had never lived before. After three years he felt he could do more but needed further education. He went and graduated with a law degree from Harvard Law School after being chosen as Editor of the “Harvard Law Review.“ Upon graduation he could have written his own ticket to any of the top law firms in the country and made millions of dollars over the years...he returned to Chicago to work as a civil rights lawyer. He was continuing the path as a community organizer as he had worked before.
Though I did not graduate from such a prestigious school, nor with honors such as Senator Obama. I had a degree that if I had chosen to use it could have allowed me to make a comfortable career. I made the exact same decision as Senator Obama, though to different cities.
Last evening former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin sarcastically mocked, ridiculed and cast aside not only the work of Senator Obama and I but millions of others who have worked in the community organizing field as a volunteer or full-time worker. Governor Palin was the worst offender as she continually worked this into her speech.
One would think the audience response would be one of shock with such statements. However there was loud rip roaring laughter.
I was saddened, hurt, disappointed and angered that work which has been considered honorable throughout the history of our country could be mocked in such a fashion and it would receive this type of response.
Apparently none of these supposedly educated folks know the history of community organizers and the progress we have allowed this nation to make.
Suddenly the lofty principles of serving your community and fellow man were something to be mocked.
The people I know who serve their communities in "organizing" capacities are some of the most caring, selfless, humanitarian people I know.
For years politicians such as Guilliani, Palin and others have said government should not be relied on to solve society’s ills. It should be done in the communities of our country; whether it be done by secular of faith based organizations. Gee, isn’t this what community organizers do!
Maybe if Guilliani, Palin and others got off their high horses and worked as community organizers helping others they would learn to appreciate what those of us are willing to do are doing.
We community organizers gather others to work with us in our efforts. We work from faith based institutions, schools and community centers. We tutor children, care for the infirm, spend time with the elderly, get food to the hungry, clothes to the needy. We expand opportunities and improve lives.Surprisingly the theme the Republican Presidential candidate determined for his convention was, “SERVICE.” Senator McCain has preached about the need for all Americans to reach beyond themselves in a service greater than themselves. His fellow Republican, former President George H.W. Bush even began a program back in the late eighties entitled, “One Thousand Points of Light” asking us all to participate in ways of helping others less fortunate than ourselves.
I guess since the McCain campaign chose their speakers and he personally determined his vice presidential candidate this theme was a joke.
I guess the thousands responded to the needs after the terrorist attack in New York City and Washington, DC are now considered a joke!
I guess the thousands who responded, after our government’s failure, to the call to help after Hurricane Katrina and recently Hurricane Gustav are now considered a joke!
I guess feeding the hungry, tutoring our young, helping the homeless, etc. are now considered a joke!
I guess the cause I have spent my entire adult life devoted for which I have not been paid in eight months due to financial problems with our organization to is now considered a joke!
I am ashamed to have ever been a member of this party...they told me what they think of me last night!
I have something to say to Senator McCain and my former party. Senator Obama the past nineteen months remembered his past history as a community organizer. To date he has run a successful primary campaign of 57 contests (caucus, primaries in all 50 states, DC and our territories), raised hundreds of millions of dollars from over two million donors. He has built a grassroots organization never achieved before…especially by a first term Senator running for national office.
We will show you what community organizers can do besides providing services in our communities…we will use it to defeat you in November. Then feel free to tell us that community organizers should be sarcastically mocked, ridiculed and made the butt of a joke by you sand your party!!
There is a bit of irony; On September 11, 2008, in New York City both Senators McCain and Obama will appear in New York City, participating in a forum for Service Nation. The topic: Community Service and Volunteerism.
I wonder which candidate will feel comfortable with the topic and be able to talk about it as a REAL part of his life and who will only be able to talk about it and not mean it!!!
Feel free to join Community Organizers for Obama!

This morning I am still overwhelmed by what Barack and WE achieved last evening. We have known for the past few months that it would happen...but to finally have it happen brought tears of joy to my eyes, heart and soul.
I have reread many of the blogs from last night and the tears have flowed again.
My parents were racist and tried to teach me their way growing up.
I rejected this hateful way of living and cried the night MLK was murdered, then RFK.
I spent years without hope, though I voted because I felt it my duty.
I am a 58 yr old white male who has voted Republican since 1972...today I stand really, really proud of my country to see how far we have come in the past 45 years.
This year I will for once be able to vote for a man I want to be President rather than voting because I was against the other person.
Barack...thank you for restoring my faith and hope in America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Barack Obama...the official nominee of the Democratic Party for President of the United States...I didn't think I would see this day in my lifetime.
Tonight on this historic night I know I will be in tears once again as another step of the dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King will be fulfilled by Barack Obama. It is so appropriate his acceptance speech happens tonight on the 45th anniversary of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Tomorrow, millions will be watching Barack Obama accept the Democratic Nomination. People across North Dakota and across America will be attending Convention Watch Parties and planning for the Nationwide Weekend of Action that will take place this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Here in North Dakota, there are nearly 60 House parties planned for Thursday evening and over 100 events planned for the Labor Day weekend. These events are taking place all across the state of North Dakota; from Williston to Wahpeton, from Bottineau to Bismarck.
