Food and its availability – or food security – is the issue, one of the most important global issues facing humans in the next decade. In the USA, it will be directly affected by rising energy and fuel costs, inadequate public policy, predatory economics, social inequality, and a financial meltdown. And then, there is climate change. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho of the Institute of Science in Society (United Kingdgom) writes: "2008 has been designated the year of global food crisis by the United Nations [2-4]. The crisis has been building up over the past decades, but things have come to a head. Agricultural production has fallen below consumption for 7 out of the past 8 years, and world grain reserves are at the lowest since records began in the 1970s. To a large extent, this is a long-term trend reflecting the failure of industrial Green Revolution agriculture, and this very failure has been used to promote genetically modified (GM) crops as the new “doubly green” revolution [5] (Beware the New "Doubly Green Revolution", SiS 37)."
