One America Celebration: Mobilizing National Service

On Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th, Empowerment Partners is sponsoring the "One America Celebration: Mobilizing National Service" weekend. The weekend program includes a Welcome Reception at Fernbank Museum, National Panel Discussion on Healthcare Reform at Emory University; Community Service projects/Food Drive; Celebrity Golf Tournament at Cherokee Run Golf Club and conclude with "One America Red Carpet and Awards Gala" where we are saluting community leaders such as: Juanita Baranco, COO of Mercedes of Buckhead; Elizabeth Omilami, CEO of Hosea Feed the Hungry and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Medical Correspondent. The goal of "One America Celebration" is to educate, empower and increase understanding of public policy issues that impact our communities.

Empowerment Partners is a non-partisan organization that encourages all Americans to step forward and to take the lead in bridging our divides, strengthening our communities and building a more vibrant democracy. Today, there is a strong initiative all across our nation that transcends age, nationality or social status. Americans are renewed with pride to help rebuild our great country by donating time and talents to schools, churches, hospitals and local nonprofit organizations in an effort to improve communities and to serve a purpose greater than themselves.

Let’s make this Senate “Filibuster-proof”. That is what we are looking forward to at this time. The term filibuster -- from a Dutch word meaning "pirate" -- became popular in the 1850s, when it was applied to efforts to hold the Senate floor in order to prevent a vote on a bill. An attempt is made to infinitely extend debate upon a proposal in order to delay the progress or completely prevent a vote on the proposal taking place.The term 'filibuster' was first used in 1851. It was derived from the Spanish filibustero meaning 'pirate' or 'freebooter'. This term had in turn evolved from the French word flibustier, which itself evolved from the Dutch vrijbuiter (freebooter). In the early years of Congress, representatives as well as senators could filibuster. As the House of Representatives grew in numbers, however, revisions to the House rules limited debate. In the smaller Senate, unlimited debate continued on the grounds that any senator should have the right to speak as long as necessary on any issue. On March 8, 1917, in a specially called session of the 65th Congress, the Senate adopted a rule adopted a rule (Rule 22), a device known as "cloture" at the urging President Woodrow Wilson, that essentially preserved its tradition of unlimited debate. The rule required a two-thirds majority to end debate and permitted each member to speak for an additional hour after that before voting on final passage. Local Supporter Will Pay Portion of Your Trip!

As we have found since this blog was created and the Inaugural Trip we have come to know as our Victory Lap has evolved into something that no one could have ever imagined. We have received so much local and national attention for what we are doing right here in Atlanta, GA that it serves to our level of committment and service to the Campaign for Change as well as our efforts to retake our room, our neighborhood, our county, our state and our nation.

A national network is currently looking into historic piece surrounding our journey and now a local supporter is throwing in her financial support as well to ensure that nothing stands in the way of our efforts of getting people to Washington, D.C.

She has followed our local interviews, write ups, blogs and etc and has decided to assist supporters who are considering Day Trips with us to take the leap. Currently our Day Trips are $175.00, however with her assistance that will come down to just $150.00. She had heard that we had to increase our costs sometime ago, due to the influx of higher inaugural costs and felt compelled to help out in a way that is very difficult at this time in our economy for most.

So, although she wishes to not be mentioned, This retired, beautiful Atlantan is making this historic trip more possible that it could be. I thank you!

We will be departing on January 19th, 9pm and arriving on Tuesday morning, 6am. That entire day is yours to participate in the Inaugural Swearing In Ceremony at the Mall on Washington. Following that, observe the Inaugural Parade down Pennsylvania Avenue and participate in many of the post Inaugural festivities until we are to depart that evening at 9pm heading back to Atlanta. We will arrive back nearly 4am on Wednesday morning, January 21.

Inauguration New Day Trips at $175.00

How To Rebuild Health Care Without Spending More Money

The US Health Care system is a complete mess. Whether you have great coverage, no coverage, or somewhere in the middle, you aren't getting the most for your money, and the main reason is that the Health Care market is simply designed wrong.

Let's take a look at how Health Care works today, and examine why this causes the problems we see every day, like spiraling costs and lack of access.

Over 90% of those with health insurance do not directly pay for their insurance premiums.
Those with insurance rarely pay more than an insignificant portion of individual procedures through co-pays.
Nearly 70% of those with insurance get it through work.
Most plans have onerous restrictions on pre-existing conditions.
Insurance premiums are not taxable, but only for those that get insurance through work.

The net result of these main facts about the current health care market include:

Consumers of health care have no idea about the true cost of care, nor do they care. Thus, there is no market mechanism that keeps prices competitive.
The core idea of insurance for insurance holders to be protected from a loss that they cannot bear individually. It should not protect you from any loss (ie spending), only from a large loss that you could not bear on your own. Since most insurance plans require very little out-of-pocket expense on the part of policy holders, they are not incentivized to minimize the use of insurance.
Since insurers are not required to cover pre-existing conditions, the marketplace has generally adopted a no-pre-existing-condition coverage policy. Thus, for anyone that has a health issue, it makes it nearly impossible to change jobs. This is bad for the economy (people don't move to the positions where they can be the most productive), and bad for the individual, as they cannot leverage the market to improve their salary.
For small businesses and independent contractors, health care is particularly expensive because it is difficult to get good coverage at a reasonable price, and typically unless there are 5+ people in your business, you cannot get a group plan, meaning you cannot pay your premiums tax-free.
