As a person that aspires to be a devout Catholic and take ALL the teachings of the Church seriously, I felt compelled to come to terms with my wholehearted endorsement of Obama, including his position on reproductive rights (which I also support from a position of civil tolerance).
As a subscriber to Friar Jack's eNewsletter at American Catholic, I wrote the letter below prompted in part by one of his associate's columns (see: http://www.americancatholic.org/e-News/FriarJack/fj091708.asp), which I found very loving and insightful. For what it's worth, I also feel the need to share my thought with other Catholics that support Obama because I sense that I cannot be the only one that feels the tension from by religious and political beliefs.
Dear Friar Jack,
I appreciate your work in bringing the Gospel message of love and forgiveness to the issue of abortion. No doubt the right to life is inviolable and sacred. Your quote from the psalms expresses the model of unconditional love that our God has for every one of us: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Ps 139:15).
I believe that this "right to life" is enhrined in our hearts, but that due to sin, including original sin as well as personal and social sin, that we are sometimes unable to recognize it. My personal stance of tolerance for "reproductive rights" or the "right to an abortion" tries to conscienciously take into account the full teachings of the church, which in this case forces me to deal with the paradoxical and tragic sense of life as both sacred and flawed (without the saving grace of redemption that comes from Christ Jesus).
Some of you may have already seen this on other groups, but I thought it worthwhile to spread this story.

On September 26th, 2008 I helped organize a large group of Obama supporters in Miami Shores, Florida to create further enthusiasm in our community and surrounding community. The rally "Honk and Wave" event effort was geared towards getting visibility and exitement up in Miami Shores but also we were able to recruit some more volunteers, registering new voters, and inform voters on early voting. The rally was quite successful... Here is a link to Youtube.com video of it (or just search by "Miami Shores Obama Rally"):
Miami Shores 1st Presidential Debate Street Rally/Honk and Wave 9-26-08: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN5DpVvX4Rw
The first rally was so successful we did it again for the VP debate. We registered voters and gave out flyers to passing motorists too on early voting, how to volunteer, etc.

We Plan to have another Rally on October 7th, 2008 for the 2nd Presidential Debate.
There was a message circulating some of our groups in Florida yesterday that spread incorrect information conerning the the ID needed to vote. We're going to clarify below.
A message from the Florida Campaign for Change chief election lawyer:
I am the Obama-Biden campaign’s chief election lawyer in Florida, and I have received the 'no match no vote' message from several sources. This message is categorically false. Our reading of the clear statutory language does NOT require that the address on the driver’s license (or other ID) that the voter presents at the polls match the voter’s address in the precinct register. Furthermore, this press release from the Florida Secretary of State definitively ccnfirms:http://www.dos.state.fl.us/news/communications/pressRelease/pressRelease.cfm?id=330 See the last bullet:· I.D. required and checked at the polls is used solely to confirm the voter’s identity. [Hooked nose Arabs paint hooked noses?]Author Derided by Muslim Students [Association] in Anti Semitic Cartoon Author David Horowitz responded today to his recent controversy at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. David Horowitz, a popular conservative writer, was derided in a Nazi-like anti-Semitic cartoon, put out by the Muslim Student Association. The cartoon, which was copied and spread around campus, portrays Horowitz, a Jewish man, as a hooked-nose Nazi hiding in a trash can. http://tothecenter.com/news.php?readmore=4895
"Hadith of Hate" Banned at USC By Reut R. Cohen FrontPageMagazine.com | 8/29/2008 As Muslim Student Association (MSA) chapters have become increasingly influential at universities and colleges around the country, critics have charged that it is a hate group that sympathizes with the international jihad and promulgates an anti-American and anti-Semitic ideology in its campus actions. In response, the MSA has claimed that it is merely another religious and cultural group similar to Hillel, a club for Jewish students, or the Newman Club for Catholics. That deception has been now unmasked at the University of Southern California, where the school’s Provost, Chrysostomos L. Max Nikias, reacting to a call from the David Horowitz Freedom Center and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, has ordered the campus MSA to remove a “despicable” hadith calling for Muslims to murder Jews as a condition for redemption from its website. David Horowitz, President of the Freedom Center, hails this as a breakthrough moment when the double standards that control the political and intellectual culture of most universities have finally been challenged. “Up to now, the slightest criticism of radical Islam on campus has been slammed as ‘Islamophobia,’ while Muslim groups and their radical fellow travelers have been allowed to say the most hateful things imaginable about Christians and Jews without any reaction from university administrators whatsoever,” Horowitz says. “Provost Nikias has called the hadith on the MSA website for what it is: despicable. Given the atmosphere that prevails on most campuses today, it was an act of integrity on his part to make this call and to demand that the MSA live up to basic standards of civility that should govern the university.” The hadith (sacred teaching) reads as follows: “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him….” http://www.rightsidenews.com/200808301838/homeland-security/-hadith-of-hate-banned-at-usc.html
Last night Sarah Palin had the audacity to belittle and make fun of my profession and life's work. In her own quest for power, she insulted a whole group of people that everyday for little pay dedicate their lives to helping others. For us, success is not measured by the size of a salary. It is measured by the difference made in the lives of others. It is not a glamorous job, we go into all the neighborhoods everyone else avoids and work with the people everyone wants to forget. Community organizers, do not advertise nor market our profession because it is not about us, it is about the people whose lives we hope to better one person at a time, one child at a time, one community at a time. I am PROUD being a social worker, a community organizer, an advocate for those who need a voice, and of my MSW in Community Organizing Management and Planning from Boston University, the alma mater of another community organizer Martin Luther King Jr. I am proud of my daughter who has decided to continue the tradition by also becoming a social worker focusing on helping those suffering from addictions, and yesterday began her MSW at Boston College. I am proud of the work that I do everyday for the children and families of Manatee County Public Schools, I am proud of the work that I do to register new voters to participate in our democracy and take ownership of their future. Community Organizers do more than just talk, we act to make the world a better place.
It seems that Sarah Palin knows no more what a community organizer does than what a vice-president does, Maybe then it's something not to take personally since before being selected, on CNBC she told Larry Kudlow "what does a VP do anyway?" She is obviously ignorant, but it is sad that hords of Republicans are also ignorant and cheered her put-down.
Here is a video of famous community organizers that have made a difference and impacted history. Pass it on to those who do not know a community organizer, do not know what a community organizer does, nor the contributions they have made to make this world a better place. It seems that WE need to speak up for ourselves and set the record straight.

Obama Joins Cuban Americans in Call for Suspension of Bush Restrictions
CHICAGO, IL – Senator Barack Obama issued the following statement today: 'I wish to express my deepest sympathies for those affected by Hurricane Gustav, particularly the untold number affected in Cuba, who face the daunting task of reconstructing their lives with the weight of the failed Castro regime on their shoulders. “This is a time when the Cuban people – not Castro – need and deserve American compassion and assistance. Make no mistake – the embargo must remain, and I strongly oppose any aid to the Castro regime. “The Cuban American community stands ready to directly assist their family members in this time of need. A failed Bush administration policy, however, stands in the way of moral and necessary aid. “Today I join with leaders in the Cuban American community in calling on President Bush to immediately suspend restrictions on family remittances, visits and humanitarian care packages from Cuban Americans for a minimum of 90 days.”
I can only say that I have not laughed this hard in a long time.
