Organizing for America (formerly Obama for America) is the grassroots legacy of the campaign that changed the course of history. Find out about plans for OFA in South Carolina and across the country. Our featured guest, Jeremy Bird, served as state field director of the Obama campaign during the historic South Carolina primary. (Jeremy was the architect of the "house meetings" program that was used with great success across the country in the general election.) He also served as General Election Director for the Obama campaign in the battleground state of Ohio. Currently Jeremy works as Deputy National Director of Organizing for America.

The SC House and Senate will hold hearings on Wednesday, March 25, and Thursday, March 26, on bills that will affect citizens' rights to vote in-person absentee and will erect new hurdles by requiring voters to present state-issued photo IDs at the polls.
A news conference will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 25 by several groups that have united to oppose the photo ID bill -- House bill 3418. The bill has passed the House and will be heard 9 a.m. Thursday by a Senate Judiciary subcommittee chaired by Senator Chip Campsen. The news conference is being held by AARP/SC, ACLU South Carolina National Office, Common Cause/South Carolina, League of Women Voters of South Carolina, SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center, South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, and the Charleston Branch of the NAACP. The groups will voice their objections to this bill and call on the subcommittee to hold hearings on H. 3418 in Columbia, Florence, and Charleston to allow voters to testify.
The S.C. Democratic Party considers the General Assembly's handling of the photo ID bill and early voting to be crucial tests of South Carolina's will to remove barriers to citizens' right to vote in the wake of last fall's massive turnout. Republicans are running scared and are trying to put further restrictions on early voting and suppress certain votes, particularly of the elderly.
Here's a brief description of the three events:
CAPITOL steps on Wednesday Groups Hold Press Conference to Oppose H3418 WHAT: Press Conference in Opposition to H3418 WHO: Teresa Arnold, State Director, AARP/SC; John Crangle, Executive Director, Common Cause/South Carolina; Mary Horres, Co-Chair, Voter Services, League of Women Voters/Charleston Area; and Lonnie Randolph, President, South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP. WHERE: Press conference will be held on the front steps of the South Carolina State House on Gervais Street. If it is raining, the group will move inside the building. Note: No electrical power and no sound system will be available on site. WHEN: Wednesday, March 25, at 1:00 p.m. After brief statements from the speakers, representatives from all the organizations will be available to answer questions from the press. WHY: This legislation, if passed, will affect all voters and all tax payers in South Carolina. These organizations are committed to insuring that South Carolina's citizens become aware of its impact on the state budget and voters' rights.

Bill numbers (at this hour) are: Ford's SB 352 on early voting, Campsen's SB 334 on early voting and HB 3418 (photo ID). A first hand account in the words of a young voter, Sarah Jamieson, in South Carolina:
Being a long-time resident and registered voter in South Carolina, I'm not suprised to hear that McCain won in our state.
I just returned home from 2 hours in line at the polls. I must say that my experience there left me very nervous. The long lines were the least of my worries after arriving. A half hour had passed before I could get an election official to direct me to the correct line to be in. I expected to show up, get in line, vote, and be on my way.
However, there were 4 lines to wait in: the first line was where you had to 'sign in,' the second, where you waited to receive a white square of paper that said something to the effect of 'verified registered voter,' and then the 3rd & 4th line, depending on your precinct where you then waited to vote. Finally, I got to the front of the 'sign in' line where I gave the election official my identification.
He quickly scrolled down a printed list of names to the letter 'J' and said that I wasn't on 'the list.' He handed my identification off to another election official who moved to a chair in the corner and was attempting to call someone I assume who could verify my voter registration. He made 3 frustrated attempts to make this phone call and returned 15 minutes later with a paper ballot. He had filled out section at the top that read, "voter not on the list, tried to call the local election headquarters but there was no answer." He instructed me on how to fill out the ballot properly and stuck me in a corner at a desk.
The majority of the state & local voting categories had one candidate running uncontested whose party affiliation was republican. Of course, there was an alloted space for a write-in candidate. I left those categories blank. The confusion, disorganization, and as disshelved if not more of a mess than this one. I'm optimistically hoping that this will not contribute to the election results but fear that such is unavoidable. I stuck my paper ballot into a plastic black box and left. My skepticism makes me worry that my paper ballot vote will not make it to the right place.
