Aug. 11, 2008 | Dear Cary,
The past few years my personal life has taken a nosedive. I think the biggest factor is this anger I've got inside, which frequently prevents me from socializing and meeting new people (or just having a good time with people). Basically I've become a very grumpy middle-aged man.
This all basically started after the 2000 election. By now, I feel justifiably disgusted by the Bush administration and his supporters of course, but it's bigger than this. I also feel my fellow Americans the past two decades or so have been awash in gleefully/mindlessly practicing the seven deadly sins, of which I believe ignorance should be added as the eighth.
Dear Friends,
I just returned from a trip to Rwanda with my friend Senator Bill Frist, MD and leaders from both political parties. Senator Frist and I went to Rwanda not as politicians, but as students, to learn about people who are rebuilding their country after the unspeakable horror of genocide.
My news from Rwanda is very encouraging. The hard work of the Rwandan people and the generosity of Americans are coming together in partnership to create a model for how we can end poverty in the most desperate countries on earth.
I came home more convinced then ever that we're all in this together. Rwandans' daily struggle to start anew, even as they deal with poverty and disease, is also our own struggle to build a more prosperous and safer world.
To further the progress in Rwanda and spread that hope, we need to take full advantage of this election year. That's why Senator Frist and I will be meeting with our respective parties' leaders in the next few weeks, as they're writing the platforms that will be unveiled at the presidential nominating conventions in Denver and Minneapolis. These platforms contain the policies on which Barack Obama and John McCain will campaign for the presidency.
We're going to ask these committees to make sure that their platforms take on the generational challenge of tackling global poverty, and we need your help to do it.
Click the link to sign the petition seen below, and I'll deliver your signature when I meet with representatives from the Democratic Party - and Senator Frist will do the same on the Republican side - to ask these political leaders to include extreme poverty and global disease in their 2008 platforms. http://www.one.org/platforms/
As a proud American, I urge you to make ending extreme poverty and global disease in the developing world a core part of your 2008 platform by including commitments to:Fight AIDS, TB and malaria and improve basic health services, particularly for mothers and young children Ensure access to clean water, basic sanitation and sufficient food supplies Spur economic growth through equitable trade and investment policies Modernize and increase development assistance, focusing on partnership, transparency and accountability Achieve universal primary education
In Rwanda, I saw the tremendous impact of some of the very things you've worked to make possible. Deaths from malaria have been cut by 66%, in large part because of the increase in bed net and anti-malarial medicine distribution. The death rate from malaria, as well AIDS and TB is going to continue to fall, because of your work pressuring Congress to reauthorize PEPFAR, America's global AIDS bill, for five more years.
Victories like PEPFAR are saving lives and giving people in places like Rwanda new hope, making the whole world a safer and more prosperous place. Now we have the chance to make ending extreme poverty and global disease a focus for the Democratic and Republican parties.
Click below to sign the petition and I'll deliver your signature when I meet with Democratic Party leaders to ask them to make the struggle against global poverty a priority in 2008. http://www.one.org/platforms/
My late friend Paul Wellstone was fond of saying that, "The poor don't have a lobbyist. That's why I went to Washington." The hope for a better future that Senator Frist and I saw in Rwanda shows what's possible when two million of us "go to Washington" on behalf of the world's poorest people. This summer, together, we have the chance to go to Denver and Minneapolis and show that ending global poverty is a priority for both political parties.
Thank you for joining me,
Senator Tom Daschle ONE Member and National Co-Chair ONE Vote '08

Change We Can Believe InAn Open Letter to Barack Obama
Dear Senator Obama,
We write to congratulate you on the tremendous achievements of your campaign for the presidency of the United States.
Your candidacy has inspired a wave of political enthusiasm like nothing seen in this country for decades. In your speeches, you have sketched out a vision of a better future--in which the United States sheds its warlike stance around the globe and focuses on diplomacy abroad and greater equality and freedom for its citizens at home--that has thrilled voters across the political spectrum. Hundreds of thousands of young people have entered the political process for the first time, African-American voters have rallied behind you, and many of those alienated from politics-as-usual have been re-engaged.
You stand today at the head of a movement that believes deeply in the change you have claimed as the mantle of your campaign. The millions who attend your rallies, donate to your campaign and visit your website are a powerful testament to this new movement's energy and passion.

Thank Your Senators For Passing PEPFAR
This week the Senate reauthorized PEPFAR, America's lifesaving response to the global emergency of AIDS, TB and malaria. 80 senators stood with us to pass the bill, with bipartisan majorities voting to defeat amendments that would have undercut PEPFAR.
Now our senators need to hear from us that we appreciate their vote and support American global leadership in the struggle to the suffering caused by these diseases.
Send the letter below to your senators.
I am proud that as my senator, you voted to reauthorize PEPFAR for five more years. Your vote will save lives in some of the most vulnerable parts of the world, and represents the very best in American diplomacy and global leadership. I am particularly proud that we are keeping our commitments to lead the effort to end the suffering caused by global AIDS, TB and malaria, even at a time when we face many challenges here at home. Thank you for your leadership, (Your Name)
Thank you for your leadership,

Help the ACLU spell it out for them.
Moments after President Bush signed the bill into law, the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the unconstitutional FISA Amendments Act.
Help us demonstrate to our leaders that we believe in freedom -- not fear. We're running a full-page ad in a national newspaper this week that carries that simple message.
But we need you to add your signature letting Congress know exactly how you feel about them selling out your right to privacy. Add your name to the ACLU's newspaper ad. We'll do our best to get as many names as possible in the ad, but may not be able to fit every one.
Is this law for real?
Five more years of American leadership in the effort to prevent and treat AIDS, TB and malaria is going to come down to a few hours of debate in the United States Senate.
The President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has finally made it to the Senate floor for debate and a series of critical votes. We need you to call your senators today and encourage them to vote to pass this bill.
There is a chance that an individual senator could raise something called a "budget point of order," in which case we'd need 60 votes to bypass this additional obstacle or else the entire bill will be defeated.
After months of deadlock and delays, the bill to extend PEPFAR, America’s powerful response to these global killers, is moving and it’s moving fast. Debate on the bill began last night and votes will begin today. But first, our senators need to hear from all of us that we strongly support this bill and call on them to vote for its passage at the current $50 billion level.
We believe that there is strong, bipartisan support to pass PEPFAR, but we're not out of the woods yet. This is the moment we need you most. Please call now and ask your senators to support this bill for $50 billion dollars in critical global AIDS, TB and malaria over the next five years.
You can call Senators Robert Casey and Arlen Specter in Washington at the numbers listed below and ask them to be champions for the millions of people around the world who are depending on us in their fight to beat these deadly, but treatable diseases.
Call now:
When you speak to your senators' staff, make sure to tell them:
July 14, 2008 He claims 23 million small-business owners would pay higher tax rates under Obama. He's wrong. The vast majority would see no change, and many would get a cut.
Summary McCain has repeatedly claimed that Obama would raise tax rates for 23 million small-business owners. It's a false and preposterously inflated figure.
We find that the overwhelming majority of those small-business owners would see no increase, because they earn too little to be affected. Obama's tax proposal would raise rates only on couples making more than $250,000 or singles earning more than $200,000.
McCain argues that Obama's proposed increase is a job-killer. He has a point. It's true that increasing taxes on those at the top would leave them less money for other purposes, including investment and hiring in the case of business owners. But the number of business owners who would see their rates go up would be only a small fraction of what McCain says. Many would see their taxes go down.
Analysis Sen. John McCain has been making this false claim over and over, starting with a July 7 speech announcing his "jobs for America" plan:
McCain, July 7: Senator Obama's tax increases will hurt the economy even more, and destroy jobs across this country. If you are one of the 23 million small-business owners in America who files as an individual rate payer, Senator Obama is going to raise your tax rates.
He repeated it in an address to the League of United Latin American Citizens the next day:
McCain, July 8: Keeping individual rates low isn't intended as a favor to wealthy Americans. 23 million small-business owners pay those rates, and taking more money from them deprives them of the capital they need to invest and grow and hire.
He said it again at a campaign event July 9:
McCain, July 9: If you are one of the 23 million small-business owners in America who files as an individual rate payer, Senator Obama is willing to raise your tax rates.
And he repeated it in the first of a planned series of radio addresses July 12:
McCain, July 12: If you are one of the 23 million small-business owners who files as an individual rate payer, watch out - because as your business grows, my opponent proposes to raise your taxes.
But repeating a falsehood doesn't make it true. McCain's 23 million claim is a bogus figure. [more...]
Our Warrantless Wiretapping Lawsuitposted by Katrina vanden Heuvel on 07/10/2008 @ 3:36pm
This afternoon, President Bush signed the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, a piece of legislation that will needlessly expand the government's ability to spy on Americans and ensure that the country never learns the full extent of Bush's unlawful wiretapping. There were many good Senators who showed courage in standing up to the White House and for the Constitution, but not enough.
A few hours after Bush's signing, The Nation joined with the ACLU in a lawsuit filed in the US District Court (Southern District) of New York challenging the constitutionality of the Act. The Nation is suing on behalf of itself, our staff and two of our contributing writers--Chris Hedges and Naomi Klein. The defendants are the Attorney General of the United States, Michael Mukasey; John M. "Mike" McConnell, Director of National Intelligence; and Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander, Director of the National Security Agency and Chief of the Security Service. We filed suit along with a coalition of other plaintiffs including Amnesty International USA, Human Rights Watch, Global Fund for Women, PEN American Center, Washington Office on Latin America, Service Employees International Union and several private attorneys.
Why are we joining this lawsuit? For 143 years, The Nation has believed that an essential element of patriotism is the unyielding defense of civil liberties. Immediately after 9/11, as a fog of national security enveloped official Washington and the mainstream media enlisted in the Administration's war, it was clear to us that the need for an independent and critical press seemed never more urgent. The speedy passage of the repressive Patriot Act, with scarcely a murmur of dissent in Congress, and the establishment of military tribunals were troubling signs that a wartime crackdown on civil liberties was under way and called for vigorous opposition. Criticizing government policy in wartime is a not a path to popularity. Our patriotism was questioned, we were called "anti-American." Yet, as it has at different times in our country's turbulent history, The Nation marched to a different drummer and stood firm in defense of our core constitutional values--believing then, as we do now, that it is possible to defend this country from terrorists while also protecting the rights and freedoms that define our nation.
Today, we are proud to join with the ACLU and other plaintiffs in this lawsuit in the belief that the government 's surveillance activities should respect, not trample, the Constitution. Our history as America's oldest weekly journal of opinion has taught us that surveillance powers can easily become a threat to a free and open society.
In the brief filed today in the US District Court, we provide reasons for participating in this defense of our republic. Here are a few:
Specifically, we cite the work of our regular contributors Chris Hedges and Naomi Klein in our filing. Hedges, in his reporting on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the so-called war on terror regularly communicates with sources in countries like Palestine, Iran, Syria and Sudan. Klein, in her essential critique of the extension of radical free-market capitalism and the resurgence of imperial militarism, routinely communicates with journalists, political activists, human rights campaigners in the Middle East, South America, and around the world. Sadly, we believe that the communications critical to their reporting could and would be monitored under the FISA Amendments Act. Certainly scores of other journalists would shoulder the same risk.
We are proud, then, to join with other patriots who understand the government's legitimate interest in protecting the nation against terrorism can be fulfilled without sacrificing the constitutional liberties that make the US worth defending.

2008 Races MapClick on the map to take you to the DCCC National mapfrom there you can click on your state to see targeted races in your area.
Our ChallengeHistorically, following a wave election like 2006, the majority party loses seats. In 1984, Republicans picked up 14 seats following an election when they lost 26. In 1996, Democrats picked up 9 seats after losing 52. In 2008, Democrats are trying to re-write the history books.
Our OpportunityOn the other side, there is a mass exodus of Republicans at a historic pace. 30 Republicans have decided to leave the House, the most in at least 78 years. Many of the seats are in competitive districts where the DCCC has recruited strong candidates. It is clear, Republicans are scrambling and demoralized.
Today, given the favorable political environment, the strength of our Frontliners, our strong candidate recruitment and voter enthusiasm for our message, the big story is that instead of just consolidating our gains, we remain on the offense. We are increasingly hopeful that we can not only hold our gains from last cycle, but grow them. We now anticipate 75 seats to be in play this cycle - more than twice the number of seats from last year.
By continuing to address our challenges and staying focused on our agenda of change, we can make history this year and create lasting change for America.

Change Washington
A Leader for Reform: Obama reached across the aisle and challenged leaders of both parties to pass historic ethics reforms both in Washington and Springfield, IL. Unlike other candidates, he refuses to accept campaign contributions from PACs and Washington lobbyists.
Close the Revolving Door: Obama will close the revolving door between the executive branch and K-Street lobbying shops. Obama's appointees will serve the American people, not their own financial interests.
Increase Transparency: Obama will increase transparency so that ordinary Americans can understand their government and trust that their money is well spent.
End Wasteful No-Bid Contracts: Obama will clean up government contracting and end the abuse of no-bid contracts.
November 10, 2007: "I am in this race to tell the corporate lobbyists that their days of setting the agenda in Washington are over. I have done more than any other candidate in this race to take on lobbyists - and won. They have not funded my campaign, they will not get a job in my White House, and they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I am president."-Barack Obama | Des Moines, Iowa
Ethics
Shine Light on Washington Lobbying
Centralize Ethics and Lobbying Information for Voters: Obama will create a centralized Internet database of lobbying reports, ethics records, and campaign finance filings in a searchable, sortable and downloadable format.
Require Independent Monitoring of Lobbying Laws and Ethics Rules: Obama will use the power of the presidency to fight for an independent watchdog agency to oversee the investigation of congressional ethics violations so that the public can be assured that ethics complaints will be investigated.
Support Campaign Finance Reform: Obama supports public financing of campaigns combined with free television and radio time as a way to reduce the influence of moneyed special interests. Obama introduced public financing legislation in the Illinois State Senate, and is the only 2008 candidate to have sponsored Senator Russ Feingold's (D-WI) tough bill to reform the presidential public financing system.
Shine the Light on Federal Contracts, Tax Breaks and Earmarks
Create a Public "Contracts and Influence" Database: As president, Obama will create a "contracts and influence" database that will disclose how much federal contractors spend on lobbying, and what contracts they are getting and how well they complete them.
Expose Special Interest Tax Breaks to Public Scrutiny: Barack Obama will ensure that any tax breaks for corporate recipients - or tax earmarks - are also publicly available on the Internet in an easily searchable format.
End Abuse of No-Bid Contracts: Barack Obama will end abuse of no-bid contracts by requiring that nearly all contract orders over $25,000 be competitively awarded.
Sunlight Before Signing: Too often bills are rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to review them. As president, Obama will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days.
Shine Light on Earmarks and Pork Barrel Spending: Obama's Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act will shed light on all earmarks by disclosing the name of the legislator who asked for each earmark, along with a written justification, 72 hours before they can be approved by the full Senate.
Bring Americans Back into their Government
Hold 21st Century Fireside Chats: Obama will bring democracy and policy directly to the people by requiring his Cabinet officials to have periodic national broadband townhall meetings to discuss issues before their agencies.
Make White House Communications Public: Obama will amend executive orders to ensure that communications about regulatory policymaking between persons outside government and all White House staff are disclosed to the public.
Conduct Regulatory Agency Business in Public: Obama will require his appointees who lead the executive branch departments and rulemaking agencies to conduct the significant business of the agency in public, so that any citizen can watch these debates in person or on the Internet.
Release Presidential Records: Obama will nullify the Bush attempts to make the timely release of presidential records more difficult.
Free the Executive Branch from Special Interest Influence
Close the Revolving Door on Former and Future Employers: No political appointees in an Obama administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration.
Free Career Officials from the Influence of Politics: Obama will issue an executive order asking all new hires at the agencies to sign a form affirming that no political appointee offered them the job solely on the basis of political affiliation or contribution.
Reform the Political Appointee Process: FEMA Director Michael Brown was not qualified to head the agency, and the result was a disaster for the people of the Gulf Coast. But in an Obama administration, every official will have to rise to the standard of proven excellence in the agency's mission.
Taking Back Our Government: the full plan Watch: Remarks of Sen. Obama
A High Standard: Obama's campaign refuses to accept contributions from Washington lobbyists and political action committees.
A Healthy America
Universal Coverage: Obama will sign a universal health care plan into law by the end of his first term in office. His plan will provide affordable, quality health care coverage for every American.
Reduce Health Care Costs" Obama's plan will bring down the cost of health care and reduce a typical family's premiums by as much as $2,500 per year.
Watch: Cutting Health Costs & Covering Americans
A Healthy America: the full plan
May 29, 2007: "We now face the opportunity and obligation to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday's health care debates. My plan begins by covering every American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don't have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned away because of a preexisting condition or illness."-Barack Obama | Iowa City, Iowa
Strengthen the Economy
Taxes: Obama will cut income taxes by $1,000 for working families to offset the payroll tax they pay.
Trade: Obama believes that trade with foreign nations should strengthen the American economy and create more American jobs. He will stand firm against agreements that undermine our economic security.
Technology: Obama will encourage the deployment of the most modern communications infrastructure to reduce the costs of health care, help solve our energy crisis, create new jobs, and fuel our economic growth.
Labor: Obama will strengthen the ability of workers to organize unions. He will fight for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. Obama will ensure that his labor appointees support workers' rights and will work to ban the permanent replacement of striking workers. Obama will also increase the minimum wage and index it to inflation to ensure it rises every year.
Home Ownership: Obama will crack down on fraudulent brokers and lenders. He will also make sure homebuyers have honest and complete information about their mortgage options, and he will give a tax credit to all middle-class homeowners.
Bankruptcy Reform: Obama will reform our bankruptcy laws to protect working people, ban executive bonuses for bankrupt companies, and require disclosure of all pension investments.
Credit Cards: Obama will establish a five-star rating system so that every consumer knows the risk involved in every credit card. He also will establish a Credit Card Bill of Rights to stop credit card companies from exploiting consumers with unfair practices.
Work & Family: Obama will double funding for after-school programs, expand the Family Medical Leave Act, provide lowincome families with a refundable tax credit to help with their child-care expenses, and encourage flexible work schedules.
Watch: On the Economy
November 10, 2007: "I'm in this race to take those tax breaks away from companies that are moving jobs overseas and put them in the pockets of hard working Americans who deserve it. And I won't raise the minimum wage every ten years - I will raise it to keep pace so that workers don't' fall behind. That is why I am in it. To protect the American worker. To fight for the American worker."-Barack Obama | Des Moines, Iowa
Strengthen Retirement Security
Commitment: As someone who was largely raised by his grandparents, Obama has first-hand knowledge of how hard America's seniors have worked to defend our country, teach our children and grow our economy. He will honor their lifetime of work.
Protect Social Security: Obama will preserve Social Security by stopping any efforts to privatize it and working in a bipartisan way to preserve it for future generations.
Secure Hard-Earned Pensions: Obama will fight to ensure that companies don't dump their pension obligations.
Help Americans Save More: Obama will make retirement savings automatic.

October 27, 2007: "We … have an obligation to protect Social Security and ensure that it's a safety net the American people can count on today, tomorrow and forever. Social Security is the cornerstone of the social compact in this country. …Coming together to meet this challenge won't be easy. …It will take restoring a sense of shared purpose in Washington and across this country. But if you put your trust in me - if you give me 'your hand and your heart' - then that's exactly what I intend to do as your next President."-Barack Obama | Des Moines, Iowa
A World Class Education
High-Quality Zero to Five Early Education: Obama will launch a Children's First Agenda that provides care, learning and support to families with children from birth up to five years old.
Reform No Child Left Behind: Obama believes that the goal of No Child Left Behind was the right one, but that it was written and implemented poorly and it has demoralized our educators and broken its promise to our children. Obama will fund No Child Left Behind and improve its assessments and accountability systems.
Improve K-12: Obama will improve our schools by recruiting well-qualified teachers to every classroom in America. Obama will improve teacher compensation by rewarding expert, accomplished teachers for taking on challenging assignments and helping teachers succeed. Obama also will reduce the high school dropout rate and close the achievement gap by investing in proven intervention strategies in the middle grades and in summer learning and afterschool opportunities.
Make Community College and College Education Affordable: Obama will create a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that will make tuition at the nation's community colleges completely free and will cover up to two-thirds the cost of tuition at the nation's public colleges and universities. This $4,000 tax credit will be fully refundable and available at the time of enrollment in college - when families need the money.
