This weekend, volunteers new and old from across the Sunshine State gathered for Organizing for America’s National Weekend of Training. From the sandy shores of Miami to the swamp where the Florida Gators play, change was in the air and health insurance reform was the topic at hand.
Money for Schools? First make certain that the funding is actually needed for the purposes for which it is used. From me, a thirty-three year veteran teacher, you will get no argument about whether schools need money. The problem is whether or not the money is used in ways that enhance student learning.
I work in a Title One school. A healthy majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch programs; they come form “official” poor families.
These children exhibit the difficulties documented so well in Ruby Payne’s book A Framework for Understanding Poverty. Their deficits become cumulative in the areas of background knowledge and cultural understanding. In many of our families, wiives, children, and even husbands are “property.” It is the right of other family members to rule over them. Schools do not have the right to insist on attendance, courteous behavior, or even to insist that assignments be completed; those things come under the purview of parents who may not hold the same values that we in education generally find important for student success.
Title One’s answers to these problems are of mixed success. We are required to hold many family activities that encourage involvement with the school. I understand the need to engage parents. However, some of the other activities required by Title One regulations are less helpful.
For example, any student in the school is entitled to free “tutoring” after school. A multitude of companies have come to the trough to feed on federal funds without significantly improving the students’ academic achievement. Why? Students are not really tutored in the traditional sense of the word. What does happen is that students are grouped in numbers of 15 or so and assigned pages in workbooks that they are told to complete. There is little, if any, individual attention.
The tutoring companies are receiving per head federal dollars as though students were really getting individual attention, but such is not the case. In fact, at my school, the tutoring seems no more than adding a ninth and tenth period to the students’ long days. Parents get to feel good because they believe their children are being “tutored,” the companies are making money, but the kids are not being given the small group or one-to-one attention that might actually address their needs. This tutoring program costs a great deal of money.
Those funds could be better used to lower class size in the regular day so that all students could have more interaction with their teachers, and there would be an opportunity for teachers to use proven techniques that depend on small groups for success. In my county, teachers and paraprofessionals have been and will continue to be laid off. If the tutoring funds, which are federal dollars, could be used to retain teachers, students might benefit much more directly and for full school days.
Another area of waste is the money used for textbooks and materials in Title One schools. There is money for some materials, but it is tightly monitered, which is fine. However, there is plenty of money for hot dogs and soda to lure parents to after-school activities. The structure governing the use of funds seems to be based on general principles rather than individual school needs.
Finally, once materials are ordered and used, they are cast aside with no regard to their cost. Two years ago, I worked in a Title One school where workbooks were available in abundance. At the end of the year, teachers were told to clear out their rooms. Any books that did not fit in the room were to be “recycled.” By recycling, I mean actually put in a dumpster for pick-up by a recycling firm, not sent to other schools that could use the materials.
Ironically, during the next year, at a non-Title One school, teachers were struggling to assemble a collection of the same books to meet the needs of their students. I could not help but feel the irony very strongly. A Title One school had tossed out the very materials that a regular school needed, and there was no outcry. Such waste is intolerable.
Do schools need money? Yes, indeed. However, throwing money at a problem without assessing needs and insuring that money is used where it is most helpful is not only wasteful, but it reduces the funds available for people and materials that might actually address students’ difficulties.
I love it. I want to cry. This is the moment I've be waiting for for the last eight years. I have been wondering how it would be, how it would feel. It's so great. It feels like someone has taken a heavy load of my chest, a big rock. I finally can breathe again. It feels so good. I have seen a lot. I was in Berlin in `89 when the wall came down, but this is better. The American Dark Ages are going to be over, the American people have voted with their feet! They have voted against prejudice, intolerance, and hate. It's all going to be OK now. This country is great. Barack has done it, he has done it, and I was there, I was right in the middle of it all. After all those years, I finally can say again "I am proud to be an American".
Welcome back to the land of the free and the home of the brave!
An e-mail is going around with a picture of a room service receipt from the Waldorf-Astoria signed by Michelle Obama on 10/15/08 for 2 lobster appetizers, 2 caviars, 2 lobsters & 1 bottle of champagne for a total of $447.00
This is a hoax e-mail, which purports to show a copy of Michelle Obama's exorbitant room service receipt, reproducing a most likely photoshopped flyer that was posted on the blog Puma PAC.
We don't need Fact check to see that this receipt is utter bogus. A bottle of Bollinger at the Waldorf for $ 44.-? What a bargain! A bottle Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut costs around $ 50 AT PUBLIX!!
Rupert Murdoch's New York Post, which originally reported the fabricated story as true on October 17, has retracted the article. Darragh Murphy, the director of Puma PAC, has also retracted the flyer and apologized for perpetuating the hoax.

We just finished walking the 2.4 mile rountrip walk across the Peace River Bridge in Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte, Florida. We ended up with about 100 people which filled the length on the bridge. Lots of great sign, banner and flag waving was greated with terrific community support driving by. Endless horn honking proved that Charlotte County is Obama territory. Thanks to everyone whe showed their support. OH, and don't forget to check out the FOX NEWS coverage. They filmed and interviewed us on the North end of the bridge. GO OBAMA!

:)
Hey,
I hope you meet up with us on the Gilchrist Bridge this Sunday to show support for Barrack and Joe. Bring signs, wear Obama garb and just come out and have a good time. The weather will be great!
Hope to see you there...
We will meet at Lashley Park at NOON this Sunday, Oct. 26th. BRING SIGNS if possible, children, family, friends and enthusiasm. We'll walk the bridge. If we have enough participation we can also have people start the walk at the Gilchrist side of the bridge.
Are You Smarter Than a Third Grader?
Yesterday, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) sat for an interview with KUSA, an NBC affiliate in Colorado. In response to a question sent to the network by a third grader at a local elementary school about what the Vice President does, Palin erroneously argued that the Vice President is “in charge of the United States Senate“:
Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”
PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.

Former Secretary of State and life-long Republican General (ret.) Colin Powell announced today on NBC Meet the Press that he will break with his party and vote for Sen. Barack Obama. "He has both style and substance. I think he is a transformational figure."
"I come to the conclusion that because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities -- and you have to take that into account -- as well as his substance -- he has both style and substance," Powell said. "He has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president."
Powell noted that McCain has been a good friend for 25 years, but expressed disappointment in the negative tone of the GOP campaign, as well as in McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the vice presidential nominee.

any of the professional economists who formally endorsed John McCain's economic plan are expressing bewilderment with his most recent proposal to rectify the home mortgage crisis.
In interviews with the Huffington Post, roughly a dozen of McCain's economist supporters said they disagreed with the Senator's recent proposal -- for the government to buy distressed mortgages at face value from banks and renegotiate them with homeowners. Several viewed it as a gimmick, driven mostly by political circumstance. Only one pro-McCain economist spoke up in favor of the plan.

Fellow Democrats, I need your help. I am in charge of our local democratic website, and am trying hard right now to boost the site and its rankings on google and on the web.
I live in North Port, Florida, which is south Sarasota County. Some of you may know Sarasota County. Right, it's Catherine Harris' county, the lady that put Bush sigle-handeldy into the White House in 2001.
It is also the county known for malfunctioning voting machines, made by Diebold, one of G.W. Bush's and ex-governor Jeb Bush's biggest campaign contributors. Even in the 2006 election we had a major bustle because machines were not counting votes for Democratic Congress candidate Christine Jennings. No kidding, I personally know people who tried to vote for Jennings and couldn't.
Sarasota county is extremely important for winning Florida in November, and Florida is extremely important for winning the Presidency. Besides the so called I-4 corridor (Orlando, Tampa) and the Miami-West Palm Beach area, Sarasota is probably the most important area in this State. While the City of Sarasota is very wealthy, artsy, and sophisticated, South County is "hillbilly land" (=republican).
However, after decades of Republican dominance, for the first time Sarasota county is on the tipping point right now. We may be able to take it all in November, if we get more people informed and get more people out to the ballots.
If you live in the area, tell your friends about this site. There is a lot of valuable information on it. If you live out of state, do me a favor. Click on the link above, and boost our rankings. Feel also free to link to the site if you have a site.
Thanks! Every vote is going to count in November (hopefully).

It's getting scarier and scarier each day. If you still can sleep sound at night, with a remote possibility that this man may soon have his finger on the red button, read this:
Writing for the Daily Beast, Michael Kinsley tells a scary story about John McCain from Jeff Dearth, former publisher of the New Republic, when Dearth and McCain attended a magazine industry conference at a casino hotel in Puerto Rico in 2005:
McCain's game is craps. So is Jeff Dearth's. Jeff was at the table when McCain showed up and happily made room for him. Apparently there is some kind of rule or tradition in craps that everyone's hands are supposed to be above the table when the dice are about to be thrown. McCain--"very likely distracted by one of the many people who approached him that evening," Jeff says charitably--apparently was violating this rule. A small middle-aged woman at the table, apparently a "regular," reached out and pulled McCain's arm away. I'll let Jeff take over the story:"McCain immediately turned to the woman and said between clenched teeth: 'DON'T TOUCH ME.' The woman started to explain...McCain interrupted her: 'DON'T TOUCH ME,' he repeated viciously. The woman again tried to explain. 'DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO?' McCain continued, his voice rising and his hands now raised in the 'bring it on' position. He was red-faced. By this time all the action at the table had stopped. I was completely shocked. McCain had totally lost it, and in the space of about ten seconds. 'Sir, you must be courteous to the other players at the table,' the pit boss said to McCain. "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? ASK ANYBODY AROUND HERE WHO I AM."
"McCain immediately turned to the woman and said between clenched teeth: 'DON'T TOUCH ME.' The woman started to explain...McCain interrupted her: 'DON'T TOUCH ME,' he repeated viciously. This being Puerto Rico, the pit boss might not have known McCain. But the senator continued in full fury--"DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO? DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"--and crisis was avoided only when Jeff offered to change places and stand between McCain and the woman who had touched his arm.

The most incredible emotions fill my days. I am a 50 yr old single woman on a minimal fixed income, so my economic personal losses are none. My children have lost much financially and stand to lose even more. It isn't the things they have lost that concern me it is the worry and fear I see on their faces that has replaced the happiness that security, not money brought them. They knew their homes and incomes were safe. That has changed all over the country!
I find myself cursing at the TV everytime McCain or Palin appear on the news, and I can't begin turn it on Fox, I might throw something at my TV and break it! Actually I wish Sarah Palin woul be quiet so that she can still have some credibility left for when she returns to Alaska as Governor. At first, when she was being treated like down-home royalty I kept hoping that they would discover a "love child" with Rush Limbaugh! Anything to remind everyone that she was still a Bush Republican (Not the love-child stuff) but preachy and shallow. I do like to see women suceed, just not to become a vice president until she is truly ready. Sadly, it wasn't just the Republicans putting us in this downhill spiral, but until Obama is in office I can't play nice, he is the one to help us, help ourselves! I truly believe that community organizer in him needs to erupt and spread all over our country. Kind of exciting, don't you think? The negative press about "not being proud of our country", hell, with the thought of such a leader makes me so proud to be an American, not for the first time, just a revival of it!
I am originally from Arkansas, transplanted in Florida. I know the ways of the ultra conservative, I have lived it. I have never been so repressed in my life. I still have values, good ones, in fact. But not to the point of going along with everything that is not in "league with the morals of the nay sayers!" I do not believe I would have an abortion, but I still am pro choice. I believe in God and I embrace most christian values. Just don't bring up prayer in schools and things like that only to stir emotions. I was born in 1958, so I vaguely remember a quiet time (maybe it was prayer time) when I was in elementary school. I hope that these same people realize prayer in schools (supported by tax dollars, by their guidelines), government schools, if you will, would be mixing government with religion, making government bigger!!!!! I am still amazed at the blasphemous tactics used to blame God for so many lame practices in the Republican party. Thank heavens God is forgiving! I know, He has to be very patient with me!
I have sent the following letter to the editor to two local newspapers. I hope that my letter helps shift the uncertain Florida vote to Obama.
Barack Obama is not a perfect human being. He is not a perfect candidate. He is, however, our best hope for actually bringing about some of the changes in our country’s damaging policies.
Obama’s intelligence and willingness to think outside the box coupled with his common sense approach to understanding the difficulties of Americans will take this country in the right direction. His ability to listen to and work with those who are from the other party or those who embrace differing philosophies makes him a strong candidate. Such attributes are essential for bringing about necessary changes in the way our country approaches its myriad problems, from health care, to education, to a staggering economic downturn.
It is telling that some people are circulating outlandish stories about Obama’s background and beliefs. The truth of his steadfast love of this country does not promote their agendas. Still, it is difficult to believe that there are people in this country who have bought the propaganda that Obama is the product of a terrorist madrassa, that he is a Muslim (although true American values would dictate that Muslims are just as welcome here as any other religious group), or that he has ties to terrorists. These folks are desperate to discredit Obama and cannot do so with the truth.
We cannot afford to overlook Barack Obama’s true history: He did work hard to acquire the education that has made him the well-informed candidate that he is today. With his mother, he studied English in the wee hours of the morning while he was living in Indonesia. He attended a challenging high school, Punahou School, in Hawaii. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York. Then, with that impressive educational background, he worked as a community organizer in the poorest neighborhoods of Chicago. Later he received his law degree from Harvard, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. This is not the history of a man with a “sketchy” background. Virtually every phase of his life has been documented, and he emerges as a man of intelligence, courage, and compassion.
Barack Obama brings to the country a set of experiences and qualifications unique to candidates for our presidency beyond the much-discussed issue of his race. He has shown himself to be a tenacious fighter for Americans in the middle and working classes. He has demonstrated a commanding understanding of the domestic and foreign policy issues facing our country. Most importantly, Barack Obama has shown that he has the intelligence, the background, and the temperament to bring fresh ideas to bear on some of our most intractable American problems: the economy, health care, tax reform, education, and the debilitating war in Iraq.
We cannot afford to let this opportunity to elect a dynamic, well-informed, and determined president pass us by. For too many years, our choices have been limited to choosing among uninspiring candidates and hoping to select the one who will do the least damage. We now have the chance to choose a presidential candidate who is a bona fide leader and well-qualified for the position of President of the United States of America. If we love America, let us give her a chance to be led by a president who can govern with intelligence, experience, compassion, and wisdom. Vote for Barack Obama and give our country a chance to regain her former status as a strong and vibrant nation which embraces all of her people.
Now, this is interesting:
Gambling has tax implications. According to IRS Publication 17, "Your Federal Income Tax", 2007 edition, page 89 "Gambling Winnings. You must include your gambling winnings in income on Form 1040, line 21. If you itemize your deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040), you can deduct gambling losses you had during the year, but only up to the amount of your winnings." In other words, you can't subtract your losses from your winnings and just not report. You have to report the winnings, and then claim the losses.
But McCain's tax returns say nothing about gambling winnings or losses.
McCain's Tax Returns Hide Gambling
I am now wondering what the Republican smear-machine would say if Barack Obama was a compulsive gambler, and Michelle was a pill-popping drug addict, who stole from charity? I am wondering what Republicans would say if Barack Obama owned seven multi-million dollar homes and 13 cars? I am wondering what they would come up with if Barack hadn't filled out his tax returns properly, hadn't paid part of his property taxes, and Joe Biden had an ethics-investigation going on, besides other things?
What would Republicans say? Be honest, they would go totally ballistic on Obama. They would make him out to be a dangerous nut-case, Michelle to be a crack-whore, and Joe would probably a shady mobster, but I guess it is OK to be a gambler, a tax evader, a thief and a drug addict as long as you are a Republican.
John McCain does not only want to gamble with your Social Security, he is also a well known gambler at the Craps table. He has been known to play craps on impulse for 14 hours at a stretch. A highly disturbing article was published in the NYT on 09//27/08, highlighting McCain's affinity to gambling and the gambling industry as well as his connections to criminal lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The gambling industry does not only fund McCain's campaign, some of his advisors have close ties to the gambling industry too:
NY TIMES: MCCAIN'S GAMBLING PROBLEM
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/us/politics/28gambling-web.html?_r=1&hp=&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&pagewanted=all&adxnnlx=1222605024-HMOC9Rxeu2SGwpfZpqdTOw
Why is this problem being ignored by the religious right? Does McCain have a record of wins and losses? If so, should these be shared with the public? McCain has said craps is addictive. Is he craps addict? Has his gambling led to any questionable conflicts of interest?
