There are still some undecided voters out there. The McCain camp is trying to spin the economic meltdown to make it sound like Democrats are to blame.
Just to make it absolutely clear, the concept of "trickle down" economics is a Republican idea, and it is perhaps the most basic reason why we are in this mess today. The trickle down idea is that people who are already filthy rich must be assisted by the government to become even richer. This is supposed to benefit the middle class indirectly, because Donald Trump and his like will have so much money they will need to hire more butlers, more maids, and more hair stylists. Money trickles down from the Palm Beach millionaire to his gardeners and other beneficiaries of his largess. He might even give bigger tips to his valets. Hopefully they will trickle money to charity. The ultrarich will also build giant mansions which we will have the opportunity to build for them, trickling money to construction workers. Any money that the super-wealthy don't directly spend on luxuries for themselves will also theoretically trickle to us workers, because they will invest in businesses that might hire people. As it turned out, they mostly just invested in companies that trickled money to slave laborers overseas.
In order to make sure the billionaires get richer, tax breaks for the ultrarich are orchestrated by the Republicans. Fat government contracts for military spending are also a favorite way of benefitting the ultrarich. Most importantly, for trickle down economics to work, deregulation is key. Fat cats must not be compelled to play by the rules, because that would decrease the rate at which they pile up cash. Whenever the trickle down economic plan starts to destroy the economy, the Republican government simply distributes a tax rebate to ordinary people, to appease them. Of course they charge this on the giant credit card called the national debt, which the ordinary people will have to pay off themselves.
Now even the band-aid of tax rebates cannot revive the economy. Trickle down economics has undermined the central principle of capitalism, which is that to make a lot of money, you must provide a lot of goods and services that people want and need. Under the trickle down regime, people made out like bandits simply because they sold bogus financial services like badly underwritten mortgages and flaky derivatives. We have corporations that shipped jobs to China so consumers can have shoddy and dangerous goods, poisoned pet food, tainted candy, and no jobs. Oil companies that have a virtual monopoly on energy because our government protected them from competition in the form of new energy research and development.
Things are going to get worse no matter who gets elected, because we are in debt. We haven't even started to pay off the debt piled up during the Bush years. The difference is, Barack will help us to eventually dig ourselves out of this hole with green jobs, no shady financial deals, and no lobbyist driven legislation. All McCain has to offer is more of the tired, failed policies that got us into this disaster.

Yesterday Barack was addressing a rally and talking about the future. He said, "If I am president..." and the crowd started to object loudly. They wanted him to say, "WHEN I am president... "
My whole life I have been listening to candidates touting themselves as the "next President of the United States." I always wondered how they could have the arrogance to consider the election as a foregone conclusion. How could they act as if the voters did not matter, did not have a choice? Barack broke the mold. He is throwing out the old recipe book for how to become a president, and taking a new path, a humble path, a better path. No swaggering, no lobbyists, no Swiftboating, no Watergating. His methods are entirely new and infinitely better than the ways of old.
I seriously think he will be the best president since Lincoln. I can't wait until the inauguration.
Thanks everyone for showing up at the Home Depot Center. We had a great time. Barack was well represented. Though some in the Palin crowd were rude, crude and angry, we countered with shouts for Obama, smiles and thumbs up. Our candidate always displays his dignity and calm demeanor. He has class. We followed his lead.

Senator McCain and Governor Palin are expected to win most of the Bible Belt states, apparently because their position on social issues resonates with the Christian beliefs of many voters there. Governor Palin especially tends to be praised for her strong faith, and she has been quoted as saying that various government endeavors such as the war in Iraq are serving God's purpose.
You might be surprised to find that there are Christians who support Barack Obama, and that Barack Obama himself is a Christian. How can the same religion lead people in such different directions?
America has always struggled with this issue. In the Civil War, there were Christians who believed slavery was a biblical principle and that abolitionists were doing the work of the Devil. There were also Christians who felt that all humans were created equal and that race should not be used to label someone as less than human. Two very different social and political positions, both calling themselves Christian.
My form of Christianity leads me to exercise principles such as the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would have others do unto you. It also leads me to love my enemies. It also leads me to seek ways to avoid violence. Jesus said, "blessed are the peacemakers." I also believe that we are all sinners, and that he who has not sinned should throw the first stone. I think being self-righteous is a bigger sin than whatever you are judging others for doing. My Christianity also leads me to care for the powerless and the weak. My Bible does not tell me specific things, including whether or not it is OK to get a tattoo, or at what specific moment in the reproductive process human life begins. The main thing my religion tells me is to do the loving thing when I have to make a decision.
I don't always live up to these high standards, but they are what I strive for, and I think these standards are reflected in Barack Obama's positions on foreign relations (diplomacy and alliance building instead of impulsive hostility), economics (give tax relief to those who are suffering rather than the billionaires), and social issues (don't judge girls who have had an abortion as "murderers"). His health care policies also hold out hope for alleviating the suffering of those who cannot afford health insurance.
I hope your basic Christian beliefs will guide you to vote for Barack Obama. If so, you will be helping to heal the wounds of eight years of hypocrisy, hate and war. If not, I will continue to love you anyway.

"Senator Obama just doesn't understand." This was McCain's refrain throughout the debate. Now we know how McCain talks to people who disagree with him. He insults them to their face and suggests they are stupid. I can just see how he will deal with foreign leaders. His attitude says, "We are the richest and most powerful country in the world. You ignorant peasants do not understand world affairs. Just do what I say and don't ask questions. This matter is too complicated for you little people to grasp." McCain is an ugly American, and his influence on foreign affairs will simply put us into further international disgrace.
In stark contrast, Senator Obama makes his point without being insulting. He can discuss the issues logically without getting nasty or offensive. Furthermore, he does indeed understand the issues. He started off with a degree in political science with a specialization in international affairs. He went on to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard, unlike McCain who graduated 894 out of a class of 899. Senator Obama is indeed not as old as McCain, and cannot claim as many years of experience, but what has McCain learned from his many, many, many years of experience? He has learned good-old-boy lobbyist-driven politics and silver-spoon trickle-down economics, both of which have proven disastrous for the economy. He has learned the international warmongering attitude that has made America weaker, by straining our alliances. We are now out on a limb by ourselves, with only the faintest degree of support even from our closest friends.
Which one of these men do we want handling our foreign relations? Which one do we want handling our economy? I wouldn't even want McCain for a friend, much less a leader. I hope others are as sick and tired as I am of low-IQ arrogant bullies gathering wealth and power for themselves and telling us we are too dumb to understand what is happening.

Wondering who would be interested in Helping form some actions on campus.
Either Student Debates, Myth Busting, or a bigger event outside, possibly a rally for Obama, or Rally for Change.
I Think it would be helpful to get the wheels rolling sooner than later given the changing context of the election.
We could have campus groups endorse or participate.
Please share some ideas, and we could get together on campus to plan the details. I will talk with a few Sociology professors today and see how they think is the best way to handle these events.
