If you are a single person and make as little as $20,000 annually in New York State, you pay at the same tax rate (6.85%) as the person making $2,000,000, or $20,000,000.

The following proposed model would be a fair step in a positive direction.

$6 billion solutionAccording to the Fiscal Policy Institute, tax cuts enacted since 1994 are reducing state revenues by more than $20 billion annually. While opponents claim raising taxes on the wealthy will drive higher earners out of state, history shows otherwise. Lawmakers have periodically increased taxes on the wealthiest to raise revenues, most recent ly from 2003"05.
O ne proposal being fl oated by the Fiscal Policy Institute and New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness would increase the tax rate on the wealthiest from 1 percent to 5 percent on income above $250,000.
Economists estimate restoring progressivity to New York' s tax brackets could add up to $6 BILLION to the state's coffers. Such a plan has broad support. A recent Siena Research Institute poll found nearly two-thirds of New York voters support a personal tax increase on those earning more than $250,000 annually. *

WNY BuffalObama Victory Celebration

Come celebrate at a party to thank the hundreds of volunteers in the Western NY region for all your hard work, which ensured President-elect Obama's historic victory on November 4th.

This party is free and open to all the volunteers who worked on the Obama campaign. There will be food and drink, as well as music and other goodies.

We will also be discussing plans for how we move forward with the work of realizing the CHANGE we all fought so hard for the chance to achieve. As our President-elect has told us many times, he can't do this alone. True change will only come through the collective efforts of millions of individuals working within their own communities to fundamentally change the way things are done.

HQ has been so busy co-ordinating all of our wonderful volunteers, the blog has taken a back seat. Here's a taste of what's been going on.

The volunteers and staff at Obama HQ New York are fired up. The excitement created by occasional special visitors (Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul and Mary in the last few days) is but a brief spike before the volunteers are back to work calling voters in battleground states:
