This weekend, volunteers new and old from across the Sunshine State gathered for Organizing for America’s National Weekend of Training. From the sandy shores of Miami to the swamp where the Florida Gators play, change was in the air and health insurance reform was the topic at hand.
Over the whole course of the presidential campaign, there was not solutions being offered for the housing crisis, and there is no magic wand that is going to turn this around. I believe that we can start locally and that we can go nationally , I am giving my hand out to start this organization, let's stop this housing crisis, I'll need all your help out there to organize this effort, and we the people can start this and then the government can help us along with our efforts. All the help we can get from architects, builders, local community organizers, and bankers to somehow come up with an organization starting in sw florida then continuing to the rest of the country. I believe this can be done because Mr. Obama has inspired us to start efforts to help ourselves and each other, one person and one step at a time, God bless America and thank you for your support and help in this mission of fixing the housing crisis. Looking forward to hearing from all of you and your suggestions.
Sincerely, AJ Black

Here's the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that eventhe anti-feminist right wing -- the folks with a headlock on the RepublicanParty -- are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vicepresident. We owe this to women -- and to many men too -- who havepicketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls sowomen can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the"white-male-only" sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes. But here is even better news: It won't work. This isn't the first time aboss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him andopposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never beenabout getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair forwomen everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are toomany of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is noway to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palinshares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive anddeceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention thathas more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidentialcandidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform thatopposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and thatBarack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would belike saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."This is not to beat up on Palin. I defend her right to be wrong, even onissues that matter most to me. I regret that people say she can't do thejob because she has children in need of care, especially if they wouldn'tsay the same about a father. I get no pleasure from imagining her in thespotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zerobackground, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37years' experience.Palin has been honest about what she doesn't know. When asked last monthabout the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that questionuntil someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does everyday?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much onthe war in Iraq."She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, andshe's won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a$1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain'scampaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state incomeor sales tax. Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so longthat he doesn't know it's about inviting more people to meet standards, notlowering them. Or perhaps McCain is following the Bush administrationhabit, as in the Justice Department, of putting a job candidate's views on"God, guns and gays" ahead of competence. The difference is that McCain isfilling a job one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency. So let's be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin outof change-envy, or a belief that women can't tell the difference betweenform and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues;the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter ofreproductive freedom. If that were not the case, McCain could have chosen awoman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq;someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe ofMaine. McCain could have taken a baby step away from rig ht-wing patriarchswho determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence AgainstWomen Act.Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about everyissue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes thatcreationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves globalwarming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women'swombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only"programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases andabortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program toshoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a stateschool system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation;she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supportsdrilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain hasopted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.I don't doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National RifleAssn., she doesn't just support killing animals from helicopters, she doesit herself. She doesn't just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuelsbut puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn't justecho McCain's pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters wer e impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as ahuman right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that italso protects the right to have a child. So far, the major new McCain supporter that Palin has attracted is JamesDobson of Focus on the Family. Of course, for Dobson, "women are merelywaiting for their husbands to assume leadership," so he may be voting forPalin's husband.Being a hope-a-holic, however, I can see two long-term bipartisan gainsfrom this contest.Republicans may learn they can't appeal to right-wing patriarchs and mostwomen at the same time. A loss in November could cause the centristmajority of Republicans to take back their party, which was the first tosupport the Equal Rights Amendment and should be the last to want to invitegovernment into the wombs of women. And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobsthan from any other single injustice, finally have support on a nationalstage from male leaders who know that women can't be equal outside the homeuntil men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning ontheir belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for theirchildren. This could be huge
Drill, Drill, Drill
I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.
I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.
But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical to Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.
I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous choices of my lifetime, and should this country chose those candidates the fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the impact that duo would have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept, the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.
Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor. In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God's plan. She is fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi war, 'It was a task from God.'
She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many babies that makes.
Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she has tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense with people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an environment of ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and might very well be the next president of the United States. She would govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.
Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private right. But when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when war is declared in God's name, when the rights of women are denied in his name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.
I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this election in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether we create policies to save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for humans. It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence through invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction. It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or whether we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine whether America is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism and aggression.
Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call life?

Will someone out there please answer one simple question for me - what makes a "hockey mom" a better mom than any other mother in American? A better mom, perhaps, than the inner city mom who can only afford to provide her kid with a basektball and send him outside to shoot some hoops??? A better mom, perhaps, than the suburban single mom working hard who can afford a mitt, a ball, and a bat, but nothing else??? A better mom than, perhaps, than a rural mom who drives 30 miles a day to work for a minimal wage job in a non-union state and can only afford to put food on the table?? Or lastly, the stay at home mother finding it difficult to provide any extra activites for her children on one salary.
The incessant references to "hockey moms" as somehow representing the "ideal" mom, and thereby implying a "better mom" is demeaning and insulting to hard working mothers everywhere. How is it that within a matter of weeks the Republicans have managed to elevate the "hockey mom" to almost a deity like status - Women running around with hockey t-shirts that say "I'm a hockey mom". First it was the "soccer moms", then it was the "security moms", now the catch phraase du jour - "HOCKEY MOMS". What will be next????
Enough is enough!!!! Basketball moms and all moms who feel disparaged unite and fight back!! This is an insult to all mothers!!
A couple of days ago I was puzzled as I watched John McCain introduce a very photogenic and young woman who I had never seen or heard of. On his 72nd birthday, John McCain presented the 44 year old governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, as his running mate. She ended her speech by paying homage to Hillary Clinton in a blatant attempt to pander to disaffected Hillary supporters. What are this woman's credentials?
First of all, she's a woman. Big deal, not all females are made the same. Does John McCain really expect to win over millions of Hillary's supporters by insulting their intelligence in such a manner? Women, AND MEN, supported Hillary for her experience and the fact that she earned their respect by serving in high office and as first lady for many years. Furthermore, how are progressive women and supporters of women's rights expected to be wooed over by a woman in opposition to one of the greatest rights we enjoy? Sarah Palin is a staunch social conservative opposed to the woman's right to choose. Did McCain really think we would ignore the fact that this woman could easily find herself in a position where, given the chance, she could take our right to abortion?
But hey, she went to college! Palin earned her Bachelor's in communications at the University of Idaho, and went on to be a sports reporter in Anchorage. If you're asking yourself how she has prepared intellectually for a spot in the White House, you'll notice that she earned a minor in Political Science as well. So, how does this compare to our veep? Joe Biden earned a double major in Political Science and History from the University of Deleware and a J.D. from the Syracuse University College of Law. He then practiced law before going into elected office while Palin worked as a sports reporter for a city with no major sports teams.
Both candicates served on councils before going into high office. Palin served on the city council of Wasilla, a town with a population of about 4,000 during her two terms on the council. When serving as mayor of Wasilla the population of this bustling little town grew to a whopping 5,000! Compare this to Joe Biden's service on the New Castle County Council, serving a population in 1970-72 of over 500,000. Finally, Biden moved on to serve SIX terms in the Senate, and is up for reelection. That's 35 years of experience in high office, compared to Palin's 2 years as governor of Alaska. What happened to McCain's vicious attacks on Barack Obama for his supposed lack of experience? How can she possibly compare to our vice presidential candidate, who has spent the vast majority of his adult life in elected office, and in a position as demanding as the Senate at that?
What national experience does she have? Has she met with foreign leaders or had any diplomatic experience? Joe Biden has adressed pressing issues of international concern while serving on the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, which he has led since the 90's, when the U.S. faced a crisis in the Balkans. Has Sarah Palin ever spoken publicly on any issue besides ANWR and energy resources in Alaska? What does she bring to the table besides good looks and two X-chromosomes? I as a woman and as an informesd citizen am angered that McCain would think me so stupid to consider Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton interchangeable. Being a mother of five is no credential to the 2nd highest executive post in the nation. The dark reign of Dick Cheney is proof enough that VPs don't just stand around and look pretty. What this nation needs is a strong team whose components complement each other and don't just pay lip service to a much needed constituency.

This is an excellent article on Cindy McCain's family wealth.
49,312 is our voter registration deficit against the Republicans in Lee County. This is according to the Lee Board of Elections latest numbers they provided to the News-Press. This means we’re looking at quite an uphill climb. Astonishingly they state 13,941 have been added to the Republican party since the beginning of the year – compared to 13,452 Democrats.
But it will not be easy!! Today's front page News-Press article on minority voters at least had one very important tidbit of information: "There are still 49,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats in Lee County." This is a huge piece of the pie that I'm now aware of thanks to the Board of Elections honoring FOIA. You can read the story here:
http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200880727034
SO NOW WE HAVE OUR "AT LEAST" GOAL!! We absolutely must register 50,000 voters in Lee County boys and girls!! We need to eat-sleep-and-breathe voter registration now if we have any hope to win our County for Obama. The goal of 50K new registrants seems high, but lets imagine we break that down into 250 volunteers - that's 200 new registrants. If we break that down by our goal of 500 volunteers, that number drops to 100 per person and so on. We need to meet this goal by the first week of October which is 10 weeks away!!! That means we need to each be producing upwards of 10-20 new voter registrations each week!! PLEASE, WE NEED YOU, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU AND WE NEED EVERYONE YOU KNOW! This means the majority of our events will be focused on Voter Registration and so should yours.
Everyone can play a part in this historic election. If you are able-bodied enough to hit the streets and work some tables, you can do that. If you need to chill in a chair, we need your help on the phone rallying up more volunteers!
We'll need to strap on the boots and start kicking some dirt as we stomp across this town for new voters. So let's get more fired up and ready to go then ever before. Florida may very well depend on what we do here in this county. Please stand tall with me and let's make this happen!!

Yes, I know I'm late, but still laid up with a severe nerve pain issue in my neck. On the plus side, at least I was home to watch the speech LIVE!
I don't understand some of the pundits saying it was too presidential & other comments. The USA and the world needed to hear those words. And the CROWD! WOW!
Sure miss being here frequently and am extremely disappointed that I can't do the hands-on work I'd planned to now that our local Obama campaign office is up and running. Really can't win since phone calls send the pain levels through the roof faster than anything else.
I may watch the Berlin speech again tonight after enjoying Barack's interview with Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press this AM, then the Unity Convention gig at noon.
This morning's breakfast reception was wonderful! It was so great to see the outpouring of support and generosity for our next First Lady! Check out event photos on news-press.com and naplesnews.com and while you are there FIGHT THE SMEARS! That's right, once again and you'll find a lot of comments that are completely skewed from reality. Please make your voice heard that we have hope and believe in our candidate and his wife!
Special thanks to The Prather Family, Jessica Clark with the campaign, and the local DEC who made this event such a success. If anyone has more photos and video, I welcome you sending them to me at wilson@leecountyforobama.com
I've got to get back to work - have a great weekend - be sure to check out this weekend's events and many others upcoming!!

Wow! What a tremendous day we had in Dunbar! People were so welcoming of us and the response was gratifying. My group of four was out there for 3.5 hours, knocking on over 100 doors, making contact with about 40-50 people and registering or updating around a dozen voters! We also handed out materials and collected details from potential volunteers. There were at least 20 folks out during the 10-3 shift so I can't wait to hear the results!! I'm not sure how many people came out for the second shift but, as I was arriving back at HQ, it looked to be more than 10 gathering to get ready.
A note about the "Summer Heat" - it was hot today, but really it didn't take long to adjust and wasn't any sort of exhausting factor. So for those of you who neglected coming out because of the heat, don't "sweat it" next time! We provided bottled water and everyone was fine.
Regarding headquarters, its really coming together and starting to hum! There were a ton of volunteers getting trained on outreach by telephone and I believe many started making calls immediately today. They still need more computers, so if you have one or find something decent at the thrift store or a garage sale, they'll be much appreciated.
Canvass For Change in the NEWS!! - I just received word from Dawn Marie that she might be on Fox News tonight at 11! I was also interviewed by Wink TV so you might see us on two channels tonight!!!
Great day today guys, lets keep this momentum and definitely plan more voter registration drives. They might possibly be the deciding factor once again here in Florida!
Stay fired up and ready to go! GOBAMA!!

Dear fellow Obama supporters,
Since having multiple nerve blocks in my neck yesterday, I can't sit at the computer very long. Please take a look at the links below to find ways to get involved together in putting OUR man in the White House! I'm sorry I'm not up to answering the individual emails I've received in the past 48 hours. I will be back ASAP, however!!
My husband and I have met some wonderful people in Lee County via the sources below and we replied to a campaign email to host 2 Obama fellows for 6 weeks this summer. Folks in charge of the Obama fellows program stay in touch weekly and will give us 24 hours notice before our “guests” arrive. They may need more housing, I don't know.
There are many things that need to be done now and in the near future. We need to come together and using organizations already in place is a great way to get everyone on the same page!

Best wishes, one and all,
The latest word is we will get a 24 hour notice phone call from the field director prior to our Fellows arrival at our home. We're a bit disappointed in the management of the program. "Yes, they're coming"; "Oh, we'll call tomorrow with final details"; no calls; "They will arrive tonight" per voicemail; we call person back... "Oh, no, not Fort Myers area yet. We'll give you a phone call 24 hours in advance. No, we can't tell you when, sometime in the next couple of weeks."
Hello, campaign? We have lives & we want to help. Could you please keep us in the loop? By the way, we have lots of friends via the Obama site AND people we've met in person anxious to help. We ALL want to help the campaign hands-on!
This is frustrating, but we're still glad we can house 2 of the volunteers for the entire 6 weeks (as long as they are here by mid-July.
Sorry for the rant, but, hey, figured you all would understand better than anybody:)
I'll stay in touch & keep you posted. At least we have some phone numbers and email addresses of note at this point.
