This week Congress started the 'marking up' session on the Health Care and Insurance Reform. It is crucial we keep the pressure on them pass the bill.
The Daily Kos has an excellent article about the amendments we should push to support, and those we should push against.

AMERICANS UNITED FOR HEALTH CARE & INSURANCE REFORM RALLY & March in Washington, D.C. Sept. 13, 2009
Sioux City, August 31, 2009: A rally/march will be held in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 13, 2009 between 12N – 5pm in support of the administrations health care and health insurance reform goals. It is the goal of Americans United for Health Care and Insurance Reform to let congress know that all Americans need health care and insurance. Over 47 million Americans are uninsured and millions more are underinsured or at risk of losing their health insurance
The rally/march will begin at the Lincoln Memorial and march to the steps of the Capitol Building via the National Mall. This rally/march will be peaceful.
Robert Reich has given his support to this rally and march, “….I just want Congress to know how many Americans want universal health care and will settle for no less than complete coverage and no less than a public insurance option, to keep private insurers honest. So I’m happy to lend my support to whatever you are doing.”
Americans have enjoyed the freedom of movement, speech and employment. It is time that American citizens have the freedom that comes from knowing they have affordable health care for themselves and their families. Health care is not just for the privileged but it is a fundamental right.
Other groups marching on September 13, 2009 for health care reform are Congressman Fattah’s “March for Healthcare”, “Medicare for All”, and “March on Washington for Health Care.”
We invite all those who wish to participate visit our web blog at http://www.americansunitedhcr.wordpress.com and register to rally.

Mine is Health Care! It's been awhile since I've interacted on this site and blog, and have hosted a community event. But with my discontentment with our health care system and how our government allows the pharmacutical and insurance companies to dictate how our doctors practice medicine, along with the medical system itself being one of the most closed minded and irresponsible business practices that ever exsisted, I had to jump on the opportunity when asked by the President to host a Community Health Care Reforum Meeting to get the nation on the same page and focused on changing things.
On Saturday, June 6, 2009 12:00 - 2:00pm in the city of Dania Beach I invite you to join me and a group of concerned citizens and residents who want to be informed of Obama's new health care reforum plans as well as, and equally as important, have an opportunity to be a part of the type of change that takes place!
I don't know yet the details of the agenda, but that is forth coming in the next week. As the information is received, it will be communicated to all who sign up. Visit the local events link for Dania Beach, to get the details and directions. This meeting is for anyone who wants to attend as Health Care reforum is a County & State issue and it's going to take the support of ALL the residents and communities in Florida. This is the FIRST kick-off gathering for communites ll over the country to get America focused, educated and ready to step up to make it happen! It's time to get to work! It's time to make it happen!
IT WILL EXPLAIN HOW THE PAST BROUGHT US TO WHERE WE ARE TODAY. THE BUSH FAMILY WERE WAR PROFITEERS IN WW2, WHAT A SICK FAMILY TRADITION TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN!

I have to admit that I'm worried about how new programs will be implemented in old systems. None of the federal systems is designed to host creative, innovative and smart/independent people. Most of the Federal Departments were designed a long time ago, under different circumstances. Most of the employees have been embedded for awhile and are skilled at outliving any political administration.
How can our new, smart President succeed with new ideas when the systems are not prepared nor support the kind of thinking and innovation needed. Is anyone going to go deeper into the system and look at how to support creativity, new ideas, and accountability.
The public will never think of this as they evaluate the effectiveness of President Obama's change agenda. They will never realize that it might get stopped by people who are incredibly gifted at internal power and control issues. Who is going to evaluate if the current system can support the new agenda?
I hope someone looks at this as all this new money hits the system!
First we have to say, "what healthcare system?" Do we even have one at the moment, other than the hodgepodge of patchworks made up of various insurance and pharmaceutical companies?
Now I'm not sure this is the MOST pressing issue of the day, unless of course you are sick and have to maneuver through the web of goo. As for me, me and mine we are healthy and have no immediate concerns, but I'm not so fool hearty to think that this will always be the case. And, with the current discussions regarding HR676 being all the buzz, I figure I'd better figure out where I stand. The first stop on my journey was actually the bill in California SB840. The following video shows how thoroughly the bill has been thought through, and consequences of not having a good health care policy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAWZrfYXs-c I found this bill very exciting, well, except for the fact that I don't live in California, nor do millions of other Americans. However, the federal government also has a health care bill currently in discussion--HR676 co-authored by Dennis Kucinich. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZbAwrycIc0Now this gets me thinking, which would be better, a state by state single payer system, or a national single payer system. Either way, profit HAS got to be taken out of health care. Now profits, in general, are not necessarily a bad thing, but they have no place when it comes to dealing with health. I love the line in one of these videos where they equate it to ones house burning. We don't expect individual homeowners to pay the fire department to put out a house fire. We all pay so if we should be victim to a fire, we can receive the fire fighting services. Why has it been that health care has not been viewed in the same way?So I decide to see where my state stands in this area. It appears we are going to have a general vote on whether or not to modify our constitution to include "Health care is an essential safeguard of human life and dignity, and there is an obligation for the State to ensure that every resident is able to realize this fundamental right." Okay, that's a start. I suppose this would lay the groundwork for future legislation.
John Edwards had a healthcare plan, but I could not stand behind his plan. It seems to have brought the libertarian out in me. The inclusion of mandetory preventative care was offensive to me. While I totally think preventative care should have always been part of the health care package, I certainly don't want it to be mandated. I think most people would enlist preventative care if it were available to them, so it is unnecessary to put it into a law.
President Obama doesn't appear to support HR676, at the moment, and his reasons are valid. It would cost jobs, but these jobs are part of the problem that bloats the health care industry. And the creation of a single payer system will create jobs, most likely many will be filled by those formerly in the private sector. Granted, CEO's will be out of work, as will many of the former health insurance employees, but they will at least have healthcare. along with the rest of America.

We Won the Election! How could we have gotten stuck so soon? Our first critical piece of legislation should be absolutely bullet proof! We should have gone over it with a fine tooth comb, nothing should have left any door open for the Republicans to walk through. Shame on us. There is time to legislate on all the important issues of the day.
We are smart enough to prioritize. Smart enough not to make the same mistakes over and over again. How can anyone in their right mind think that a few dollars extra in each pay check will turn the economy around? If a person isn't working how will a tax cut help them? Working people can't afford health care for themselves or their children. Unless an old idea has proven to work, don't do it again. Simple.
We know better, we have extensive experience with Republican strategies. I love the idea of collaboration and bi-partisanship, especially when so much is at stake - America is at stake. I don't like looking stupid or silly.
We should come from abundance and clarity. We are strong, active and ready for Change. It's really strange to feel so defensive so quickly, it hasn't even been a month that we are in the White House. President Obama has great instincts, he needs to use them. We are counting on him. Even if he is wrong, we are trusting he will consider all ideas and settle on the best of them. We believe he will do his best.
I hosted a house meeting this past Friday evening. It was very well attended and we had really good conversation about current issues and the economy. We want to know what to do next, how can we help use our voices. We want to establish our footing firmly and clearly. We want to understand the Stimulus Bill and any other legislation coming down the pike.
We want a roadmap, a treatment plan so to speak. If a person is sick, the doctors create a treatment plan. If a person is really sick, there are a lot of things that must happen. The only way to handle the scope of the plan, without going insane, is to break it down into clear, bitesize pieces. The patient needs to see where they are going, the destination. We want a better idea of how we are going to get there - what steps and in what order. That assumes a certain logic, but it helps us from being overwhelmed!
I think America needs a treatment plan and more clarity on what we have to do in what order. Are we traveling in a car, a jet, a train? On highways, side roads, over bridges, what? No one knows everything, but we have so many smart people who can help define this more clearly for us. We can modify along the way and adjust. That would be normal.
President Obama needs to run the show. The people around him must make sure they are adding value, not distracting the public. They need to be somewhat invisiable. The President's success is their success and our success. America's Success. This is not the time to get distracted by the wrong things.

In with the New
Today President-elect Obama sounded like the thinks the BCS should be tossed. That's what the conversation was at Thanksgiving in my neck of the woods, that it's a joke. Honestly the only people I've heard promote it or defend it are talking heads on the tube. There is the occasional op-ed but man to man, fan to fan, the BCS stinks.
So how can you keep the flavor and tradition of bowl games and still have a playoff?
My 2c
It starts with 16 teams.
The eleven winners of the non-independent IA conferences plus five at large teams comprise the field. (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Pac 10, SEC, Sun Belt, WAC, +5)
Three tiers of playoffs are played in December with the championship game on New Years Day.
Fifteen Games are needed to complete such a playoff: eight in round one, a quarter final, a semi-final and the championship game.
If you look at the Bowls (oldest first) fill in the slots in order.
wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_bowl_games
Rose 1902 - Final New Years
Orange, Sugar 1935 - Semi-final Christmas and/or Christmas Eve
Sun (1935), Cotton (1935), Gator (1946), Capitol One (1947, Tangerine/Citrus) - Quarter Finals Saturday 7+ days prior to Christmas
Liberty (1959), Chick-fil-A (1968, Peach), Independence (1976), Holiday (1978), and the rest of the "give it a name" Bowl Games round out the Initial Round of Eight.
Any Bowl Game that doesn't want to partake of the playoffs doesn't have to. Since the playoffs are only taking 16 teams there will be plenty of 2nd and 3rd place teams to fill out traditional bowl games if established bowl games would rather play on New Years or Christmas or a holiday week-end, there is plenty of broadcast time the playoff schedule runs two games on or around Christmas or New Years/Eve.
In the event that more bowl games elect to opt out or as an alternate option, the first round of the playoffs can use regional general fields and or big city/media market fields.
This may push a few teams schedules back but hey, college football in August is fine by any fan of the game.
11 game season
playoffs potential +4 games
or
+1 bowl game for not playoff teams
More total games, more football, good.
Money splits for playoffs are an equal portion given to each school and their conference + a progressive split for the top 8 finishers and their conferences.
That's a rough idea of how it could work so that the tradition of bowl games that started with The Rose Bowl can remain preserved while still allowing for a competitive playoff system that takes politics out of the game. And lets things be decided on the field (preferably grass).
