ORANGE - After immigration raids near her house this year, Rosa isn't taking many chances.The 35-year-old illegal immigrant tries to stay home when possible and avoids extra trips to the store. And she's spoken with her two U.S.-born children about what lacking papers means – and let them know that if she is deported, a family friend will bring them to her in Mexico.Citing an increase in raids, immigration rights advocates are urging families to plan for a deportation if someone in their household faces that risk. About 3 million children who are U.S. citizens have at least one parent who is undocumented, according to a 2006 Pew Hispanic Center study.Immigrant organizations across the country try to encourage families to prepare for deportation much in the way safety experts encourage people to plan for an emergency or natural disaster. Their advice includes taking care of property records and finances and making clear plans for who will care for children if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests caretakers."We're anticipating enforcement being the No. 1 thing that is going to happen in immigration," said John Ayala, chairman of the Southern California chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. "We're trying to get prepared for it."During the past fiscal year, ICE made nearly twice as many arrests – 30,396 – in its fugitive operations program as it did in the year before. The program tries to track down illegal immigrants who ignore court deportation orders or have criminal records. It may also lead to the arrest of undocumented immigrants with no previous contact with the law and legal immigrants with criminal convictions.ICE also arrested more than 4,000 illegal immigrants in workplace raids during the 2007 fiscal year, up 11 percent from a year earlier and more than three times the number of arrests two years earlier.Advocacy groups started urging immigrants to make plans after a workplace raid this year in New Bedford, Mass., separated detained parents from young children. While groups have long dispensed advice on immigrants' rights during a raid – for example, on whether they must open the door to agents and on their right to remain silent – many now also offer guidelines on what people can do ahead of time to protect their family.The Catholic Legal Immigration Network recently issued new guidelines that aim to give illegal immigrants more practical advice, such as keeping copies of important documents with a trusted relative and carrying prescription medications. The Mexican consulate in Santa Ana is distributing wallet-sized cards that tell people what to do if arrested and remind them of their rights and responsibilities under U.S. law.Rosa, who asked that her last name be withheld because she fears deportation, said she spoke with her 10-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter after they saw TV footage of ICE raids near their home. "It's the same as always, but now we've seen more raids," she said.Some organizations suggest immigrants get a power-of-attorney signed to handle personal matters, though Anaheim-based immigration lawyer Louis Piscopo said California notaries require a valid form of U.S. identification or a foreign passport stamped by U.S. authorities.Ayala, who works with a network of Southern California immigration lawyers to provide emergency legal services in case of a raid, suggested parents take other precautions, such as authorizing a relative to pick up children at school in case of an emergency.

Freedom of Speech at UNR Still Under Discussion

If the University of Nevada, Reno has its way, Maritza Perez, the Vice-President of the Students for Barack Obama UNR chapter, won’t be able to practice her freedom of speech by placing a Barack Obama sign and an anti-war sign in her 4th floor dorm-room window.

The ACLU has now gotten involved and is advising Maritza on her upcoming discussions with the school administrators. The official policy of UNR is to not allow any signs in dorm room windows—so that they don’t have to make decisions over what is “offensive.”

The Nevada Sagebrush has been doing great in-depth reporting on this controversy and contacted Lee Rowland, the staff attorney for the ACLU about the upcoming conflict with school administrators:

Rowland said this is a First Amendment issue and laughed when she learned the university banned signs because they didn’t want to deal with obscene speech.
“Quite frankly, (banning signs because) some speech might be offensive or disruptive is absolutely ludicrous, especially from a government entity like UNR,” Rowland said.

The University of Nevada, Reno was the first institute of higher learning in Nevada and was established in 1887. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas broke free from UNR in 1964 and began to call its students the “Rebels” to solidify their newfound freedom.

It looks like students at UNR are still fighting to level the playing field—and university administrators are still pushing back against anyone who wishes to use their freedom of speech—whether that be to support a Democratic presidential candidate, or protest the Iraq War.

UNR President Milton Glick said that “It’s one of those issues where good people can disagree on it.”

Civil rights should not be written off with such ease. Mr. Glick, we respectfully disagree with you.

State of the Campaign

When we got into this race as a largely unknown candidate new to the national political stage, we never expected that nine months later at this stage of the race, we would be in a tight three way race in Iowa; leading in the money race; have the largest grassroots organization in modern political history; and have an organizational advantage in the early states and February 5 over a quasi-incumbent from the most powerful political machine in modern political history.

Barack is the candidate with the message and biography that is most in synch with the electorate – according to a Gallup poll in September Democratic voters prefer change to experience by a margin of 73 percent to 26 percent.

The Obama campaign has: the largest organizations with the most experienced staff and enthusiastic volunteers in the 4 early states;

An unexpected financial advantage that allows the campaign to compete in multiple contests at the same time;

The most donors by far in the race, who as the election draws nearer will get even more active on our behalf, giving us financial sustainability;

A significant organizational advantage in February 5th states.

Barack Obama's Schedule: On Monday, Barack Obama received the endorsement of the New York City Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association. Tuesday, he’s speaking at Change to Win in Chicago. Wednesday, he can be seen live on the NBC/NECN/New Hampshire Public Radio/New Hampshire Democratic Party debate, which will be broadcast live on MSNBC at 9pm EST. Following the debate he’ll head to New York, where he’ll participate in a live interview on ABC’s The View at 11am EST on Thursday before leading a major rally in Washington Square Park. On Friday, he speaks at Howard University’s Convocation and participates in the CBC Issues Forum in Washington, DC.

Obama Wins Yahoo's Demo Candidate Mashup

Every time a Presidential debate ends it seems the real contest begins, as candidates elbow their way to the nearest television camera to spin their own performance into a tale of triumph.

But in Yahoo's Democratic Candidate Mashup -- the first "online only" debate -- it was the viewers who made the call, just like they would in a real election.

And who did they decide mastered the mashup? By a 4% margin they picked Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who edged out New York Senator Hillary Clinton with 35% of the vote to her 31%.

Yahoo! News asked users who they would vote for after seeing the online debate. Only a fraction of those who watched debate footage voted -- more than a million people watched debate clips, but only 15%, or about 160,000 people, voted. That's not so different from the low-turnout rates we usually see in actual elections.

Younger viewers may have helped put Obama over the top. Some 41% of his audience was under 35, compared to 36% of Clinton's audience.

In an interview with Yahoo! News after the results were announced, Obama said his "doing business differently" approach in politics resonates with young voters.

"That's always been the case in American history -- change comes because younger people decide that they want to imagine a different country, and live up to the ideals that they've heard about, but don't always see practiced," he said. "So we're thrilled to have young voters involved; we think that they're going to be a major factor in this race."

Yahoo! analyst Paula McMahon says Internet familiarity was a likely factor. "Obama had the most votes," says McMahon, "so we're theorizing that possibly the younger audience might be a little more comfortable voting on the Internet. "

A request for an interview with Sen. Clinton was not answered.

In the forum, "The Election '08 Democratic Candidate Mashup," which was sponsored by Yahoo!, The Huffington Post and Slate, the candidates were not in the same state, let alone the same room. All were interviewed individually via satellite from the campaign trail.

Before the debate, Internet users set the stage by selecting, through an online vote, three topics to be discussed: Iraq, healthcare and education. Questions on each topic, plus a wildcard question posed by comedian Bill Maher, were presented to the candidates. Each viewer was then given the opportunity to build a personalized debate, selecting the issues and candidates to highlight -- for example, comparing New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich on education or matching up Senator Joe Biden and Senator Chris Dodd on Iraq.

Comedian Bill Maher surprised each candidate with a wild card video question.

Maher's pointed questions were among the most watched of the entire debate. The surprising questions made some candidates laugh and others squirm. For Clinton, Maher focused on the war in Iraq, saying: "George Bush fooled you. Why should Americans vote for someone who can be fooled by George Bush?"

Clinton laughed loudly before recovering to say that "it was a little more complicated than that."

With logged-in users comprising about 40% of the overall debate audience, Yahoo! says it was able to gather some demographic data based on information voluntarily given when the account is created. This allowed for some interesting glimpses into potential voter behavior. For example, the number of viewings of former Senator John Edwards' health care reform clip suggest that he has struck a chord with women in Iowa. And Kucinich seems to have a following among women under 35 in Seattle.

Ultimately, however, the Obama versus Clinton matchup dominated the Democratic Mashup, just as it has on the campaign trail.

Greetings from the Obama for America, Nevada New Media Team-

My name is Zach Edwards and I am the co-director for New Media at Obama for America in Nevada. I wanted to extend my hand and invite you to participate in our New Media out-reach program that is going to ensure that Nevada will be a hub for Barack to extend his support through the West after the Nevada caucus on January 19th, 2008.
